Decimated Dogs offense still has a lot of weapons, but defense is running out of excuses

Chris Conley's catch was a "SportsCenter" highlight. (Jason Getz / AJC)

Chris Conley's catch was a "SportsCenter" highlight. (Jason Getz / AJC)

I’ve been battling a technology meltdown this evening, so while I can get online here’s some random thoughts and observations from Saturday’s Georgia-Tennessee game …

Losing Keith Marshall for the season is a big blow, but once Todd Gurley comes back the Dogs’ running game should still be in pretty good shape. J.J. Green and Brendan Douglas stepped up big-time under trying circumstances. Green looks like a legitimate breakaway threat and Douglas got some tough yards, though he needs to work on hitting the hole a little quicker and holding on to passes (he dropped a couple before finally making a big reception and run on Georgia’s last scoring drive in regulation).

Still, if Gurley isn’t able to go Saturday against Missouri Mike Bobo might have to get a bit more creative in his run calls than some of those up-the-middle tries that got stuffed in the second half in Knoxville.

The loss of Justin Scott-Wesley, who’s developed into the sort of deep ball threat that Malcolm Mitchell provided, also will hurt. But the Dogs are remarkably deep at wide receiver and Chris Conley already was a favorite of mine even before that amazing one-handed touchdown catch that was a “SportsCenter” highlight play Saturday night.

One thing I imagine we will see is more balls thrown to tight ends Artie Lynch and Jay Rome, who barely registered in the passing game against Tennessee (with Lynch having a drop). …

While the offense again carried the load, there’s still work to be done on that side of the ball. In the excitement of Aaron Murray once again bringing the Dogs downfield for a late scoring drive (Hutson who?), the tendency was to overlook Georgia’s dismal third-down conversion rate (only four of 13). …

As for Bobo, I’d grade his playcalling against the Vols as a solid B-minus. Although he went too conservative at times, I think we can write that off to the loss of much of his offensive firepower to knee injuries. However, I question why, when he finally got around to calling the fullback’s number for a carry, it was Merritt Hall (mainly a blocker) rather than proven running threat Quayvon Hicks. Of course, it didn’t help that the Vols completely loaded the box on that play and the offensive line missed a block. …

Speaking of the OL, they had a pretty good game with a few lapses that resulted in Tennessee getting penetration into the Bulldogs’ backfield — plus one sack. No ice cream for the big guys, this week, I guess. …

And the defense (sigh). Well, they had a decent first half but once again Todd Grantham made no second-half adjustments to the opponent’s offensive adjustments and things quickly went downhill, culminating in that drive where the Vols converted three times on fourth down. Actually, there were defensive highlights. The Rev. Ray Drew, who had two sacks, is now looking like the player everyone expected to show up in Athens when he first signed with Georgia. And someone (Damian Swann) finally defended the wheel route, almost getting a pick in the process. But the secondary is still stinking up the place and the Dogs consistently got beat on the perimeter. …

And special teams? Well, Marshall Morgan made two big field goals, and when he took over kickoffs after Collin Barber handled the first couple, he generally did a much better job than the past couple of games. Unfortunately, the FG he banged off the goal post definitely was a momentum shifter in the game, though it wasn’t the only problem in that disappointing drive, which not only saw Michael Bennett get hurt but Georgia follow up a big Green run with Douglas getting stuffed a couple of times, a delay of game penalty, and an incomplete pass on third and 14.

The punting game continues to be a disaster, however. Whether it was the missed block, Barber being too slow getting the kick off, or a combination of the those factors, a second blocked punt resulting in an opponent’s score this season is just completely unacceptable. And you can bet every opponent remaining on the schedule is going to be trying to get a block, too.

I’m not sure we can really expect any improvement, however, considering Mark Richt’s continued indifference to the chronic problems Georgia has in special teams play. I thought the situation was summed up in his locker room interview with Chuck Dowdle when Richt was discussing the overtime field goal attempt and he noted that they put the ball on the left hashmark but then admitted he didn’t know whether that was the one Morgan preferred or not. So much for the head coach supposedly paying more attention to the kickers this season! …

The first thing my brother Tim said after the game was that he couldn’t believe the turf at Neyland Stadium was in such terrible shape, and he wondered whether that was a factor in the injuries of Scott-Wesley and Bennett. Several other fans said the same thing, and in the “Dawg Talk” radio show, Kevin Butler said he’d been down on the field before the game and couldn’t believe how poor a playing surface it was. Yes, it’s true that both teams had to play on the same field, but you’ve got to think the Vols might have been a bit more aware of where the potholes and places where the sand was painted green were located. When asked about the condition of the turf, Richt said he didn’t think it played a part in the injuries. Still, UT ought to be ashamed of that field. …

Finally, I got an interesting perspective on fans griping about the officiating after this game. Georgia fans were wondering about that bizarre defensive delay of game penalty on Blake Sailors for “stomping” his foot in what the ref thought was an attempt to draw the Vols offsides (yes, it’s a rule, but I’ve never seen it called before) and also questioned that spot that Richt challenged as well as the Tennessee touchdown where the receiver’s feet never seemed to drag while in bounds.

But I noticed on Facebook Saturday night that UT fans also were questioning the officiating. They thought the consecutive flags for personal foul and pass interference on the Dogs’ last drive in regulation were suspicious and, naturally, didn’t see Pig Howard’s fumble the same way Georgia fans (and the replay official) did, noting that he still had a finger on the ball. Of course, having a finger on the ball is not the same as having possession of the ball.

Still, what I thought was really amusing was a UT fan’s suspicion that those late calls were made because the SEC didn’t want Georgia losing to an unranked team. That’s the kind of talk Alabama usually draws from opposing fans. Does that mean we’re making progress?

I’ll be off a few days this week, but the Blawg will return Friday with a look at the Missouri game and Junkyard Mail.

What is up with our defense consistently lining up late and looking generally confused when getting lined up?

I will say Todd Grantham has under-performed tremendously throughout his tenure at UGA. Firing CWM was the right decision and CTG has been a slight improvement, but overall a huge disappointment. Hopefully things can turn around!

CTG’s defense is awful, TN offense is last in SEC, and we made them look like world beaters! Barber does seem a tad slow in punting the ball!

It would be good to see what Douglas or Green could do on a run up the middle if Hicks or the other fb led the way? What happened to the sweep play that was so successful with Hicks leading the way? It would be good to find out the best plays for each player and use them. Not just running the plays Gurley runs with a back with lesser ability to run what Gurley runs etc.

Lots of teams are young in the secondary. We can’t even get lined up properly. I refuse to believe that every young DB we have is a complete imbecile, so I’m gonna put that on Grantham. Whatever he’s telling them to do is not working.

This is terribles news about all the out players. I think Tenn was just dirty with the cheat shots to cause some a the injuries. Buy we need to rise above and just win for them that hurt. Then we can sends Athens ladies to make them feel better after surgerys.

We just got to get healthy what we cans in next few weeks. We get a few back and we be close enough to full strength to make that Judas Muschump get fired like Zooks. Good news is we got some sorry teams to play in next few weeks while we get healthy. We showed that Mizzou last year why they not in same class as SEC teams with speed. Nothing changed from last year and will unload the whooping can on the Mizzou Tigers just likes we did on the LUSer Bungle Tigers but only worse with more tail whooping. Then we get the pointy head Commodes that are embareassing to league before off week to get healthy for Gaytors.

Richt has never been a master of the details. It’s why we’ve been “almost” national champs but never the real thing. We’re looking at a potential game winning season saving kick in overtime and the head coach doesn’t know where his kicker likes to kick the ball? Unbelievable. One other comment on the running game in the second half. I love JJ and Brendan. They run tough, and they stepped up big time. I new JJ was fast. I didn’t know how tough he was. I agree about Bendan needing to hit the hole faster. I also question whether he is the guy to send end around expecting him to make the corner (at least at this point). I predicted that Quayvon would be the huge break out guy. I’ve always liked fullbacks, and it’s been a couple of years since UGA has had a dominate one. Apparently, though, he didn’t put forth the effort vs. North Texas and wound up in the doghouse. Giving up on the block on that punt certainly didn’t help his situation.

Stopping the run isn’t the problem. At least it hasn’t been on 3rd down. The D always seems susceptible to short passes in the middle of the field when we are in zone coverage. And it usually looks worse when we don’t blitz. No pressure on the QB who just waits for his receiver to jump into a little hole in our zone and 3rd and 7 becomes 1 and 10 and they made it look easy.

Hate it for all the guys that are hurt but as long as Gurley comes back and nobody else gets hurt I think we’ll be alright. I like JJ Green a lot. He doesn’t look like a freshmen. He runs with a lot of confidence and seems to know what he’s doing. We’ve always had receivers coming out of our ears so we’ll be fine there.

All the injuries will do is give the Kool Aiders an excuse for Richt if we drop another game or two. That’s the only downside I see.

Flo-Ri-Duh

October 7th, 2013
8:05 am

The only obvious cheap shot I saw was on Barber in the end zone after the play was over and it wasn’t called.

There were a couple of border line hits out of bounds by the Tick Hounds – border line.

Also one chop block was called on the Vols.

Murray was hit late at least three times with no foul.

The hit on Marshall was unfortunate but not a cheap shot.

There was holding by the Vols OL on at least 9 plays in the 2nd half that wasn’t called. One reason their QB had all day to throw the ball.

Dawgs perimeter defense has been dismal … the OLB’s are not containing against the run but are getting caught cheating inside. The inside LB’s and DL for the mos part are holding their own against the inside run.

Dawgs need to get more LB’s in the rotation even if they are freshmen. The defense wore down due to the miserable 3-12 on 3rd down by the offense.

3rd down defense is awful as is defense in the red zone. 3rd down offense was like wise lacking but can be understood due to the multiple disruptions because of injuries.

Bottom Line: Dawgs beat the Vols despite having a true freshman backfield and walk ons at WR.

Tennessee still isn’t that good but injuries, errors on special teams and pahantom calls by the refs kept them in the game.

Injuries have decimated this team… it’s not just poor play but a combination of injuries & poor play that kept the Tick Hounds in the game.

Flat Tire – The truth is the truth – the OLB’s need to stay on their assignments and protect the perimeter. The DL & ILB’s are holding up inside. The problem against the run is outside. Sure you will agree?

AltamahaDawg

Was that really a TD on that “toe down” sideline? I think that get’s overturned, actually called out of bounds in the first place, with a better view from the umpire/camera. Heck of an effort though. I’m sure we’ve got a similar call somewhere in the past. or not. I also don’t think TN ever got a bad spot of the forward progress all night.

BUT that fumble was close enough, it “could” have been called in, as it was on the field. So give them credit for getting that right. (or “our way”, as I am sure the TN fans think we got). That’s was a tough thing to reverse I am sure. It was the game for all practical purposes.

Mike Bobo gets an F for this week. With the score 17-3 and the ball on the Tenn 20, Bobo called 3 of the worst most conservative plays I have ever seen. Bobo has to learn when to put a team away when you have the chance He should have gone for the throat and gone for a touchdown. Instead we go three an out and miss a field goal and Tenn marches down the field and scores. IT’S THAT SIMPLE!

I think you make an excellent point. F-R-D. not converting your own 3rd downs is a sure fire recipe for having worse third down % on the other side. I think that would be true for our best defenses. and clearly this is nowhere near that right now.

If we had Marshall, Scott, Bennett, or any combination of those for the game, we put up 45 points, and give up 24, and nobody is feeling too bad today. Would that have meant we didn’t give up too many yards, plays , points……..NO. There are still too many mistakes, and blown coverage’s. But in perspective, it wouldn’t have really mattered.

I’m not a Bobo hater, just a sometime critic. He’s been brilliant this year until Sat…

The conservative AND predictable playing calling in the second half energized UT and lost us the lead and Murray bailed out Bobo in the end when he no choice but to throw.

Fact: first drive of Q3 we ran it 6 straight times before throwing it on 3rd and long.
Fact: in Q3 we ran it almost exclusively on 1st & 2nd downs, 12 runs to 4 passes & 1 sack in Q3.
Fact: Prior to the last drive in regulation we ran it 18 times to 6 passes (almost all on 3rd and long) with one sack.

Why in the hell do you take the ball out of the hands of your best player? especially when UT’s defensive backs suck worse than ours? where are the TE’s?? If you’re gonna run it primarily why not line up in 2 TE set, and play action to keep D honest? etc

Unbelievable really. Bobo went to the well WAY too often with the run, he needed to keep mixing it up like in H1. Yes Virginia, you can throw the ball AND still be conservative, especially with a guy like Murray.

We’ve seen the reemergence of Bobo’s alter ego in H2 and it almost cost us. I hope he goes back to the form he showed in games 1-4.

I can’t believe I watched a game where holding was not called on either team once. I saw GA pass rushers being held right in front of officials and they never reached for a flag. I am sure we could have been called for holding as well but it was obvious that the refs were told to let them play. Connelly is THE MAN and Murray doesn’t throw it to him enough. He needs to target him a dozen or more times against Mizzou for us to have a chance. Speaking of Mizzou, I have a bad feeling about this game, the early start will be a first time for us this year. I am very nervous about their passing attack against our porus defense. Something has to change on that side of the ball and Grantham needs to step it up.

Well said eldawg… In the second half it appeared Bobo made and effort to NOT embarrass Butch Jones and felt good kicking field goals and running clock out. Bobo needs to realize this… our defense CANNOT get off the field on 3rd or 4th down and our ST’s are terrible.

UGA was very lucky to win that game because of this attitude. Mizzou is going to be a tough test.

I am amazed at Bobo’s play calling. Why in hell did he favor the run so much over the pass? He didn’t even use his tight ends. Most of the passes went to the perimeter, never over the middle. Did Murray have a cramped arm? Secondly, I noticed the holding going on with no flags and the face mask call was blatant. The Tennessee player’s face mask wasn’t even touched. This brings me to this point: It’s very hard to win in Neyland Stadium! Also, observe, if you will, the head hit on Barber. It was intentional with no call. In short, Tennessee plays dirty and the officiating was lousy!!

I think it’s different and easier to come up with a game plan when you know who you have and who you don’t. ie Mizzou. (and rest of year)….than when you lose the very guys you planned everything around during a game. So, I’d guess whatever conservatism we see next weekend will only be to the degree of what the (lessor) guys are capable of……. and not trying to mange and get out of the game.

Last year, with the exact same personnel as this year but without the intervening experience and mental conditioning, we LOSE this game by 2 TD’s folks. Hell we might have lost even with all the NFL bound talent on the D. Why? Because Aaron Murray hadn’t found himself yet and the team didn’t believe yet. These things matter.

I just sat slack jawed as it all imploded and we somehow STILL won. You have to allow for the “other” factors when looking at the team’s performance in this game. Yeah, those were conservative calls but Murray also has the opportunity to check out of the play so it isn’t always on Bobo. Last week we called a play to JJ Green that would have had everybody in the DawgNation screaming “what the hell are you doing!” if it hadn’t gone for 18 yards. AGAIN, the call looks bad when it isn’t executed and looks GREAT when it is. The O-line didn’t get it done. And probably they were trying to avoid a sack at that point.

The Dawgs walked into the equivalent of a bear trap with wolves closing in and walked away victorious. That trap snapped shut when Marshall went down. And then snapped the bone when Bennett and JSW went down. We somehow sawed off our leg, beat off the wolves and walked away victorious. The gutsiest performance I have ever seen. Nothing even comes close.

So now the defense is in sink or swim mode. They have to take up the slack. Time to ditch the pullups boys and put on your big boy pants. No room for error now. No awesome offense to bail you out now. When in doubt, ATTACK. I’ll take getting burned on an aggressive play. GATA.

The blocking was set up, and should have been good for 5-10 yards. Then took a shot deep on 2nd, was even “risky” in my book.

Obviously we had to run it on 3rd and 12 to set up the game winner at that point.

I don’t really know what Bill would consider not showing “indifference”. It’s not like Richt is one to rant and rave about any issues that they are trying to address during any season. Would we really want the guy to discuss this out in the open.

We probably give more scholarships to special teams players than anybody, and I am sure we spend as much or more time in practice as anybody. We have also been, overall, one of the better Special teams program in the SEC over his tenture.

As far as structure, I’ve never understood how charging everybody with that burden, literally holding the entire staff accountable….. is somehow LESS than just piling it off on one guy. It’s a fair debate as to the effectiveness, or the strategy, but to argue its “not important” is simply without fact or logic.

There are teams WITH full time dedicated ST coaches that do not always have success, and there are teams that do what we do, and team that do some combination. Over time, none of that has proven to be any more or less effective.

The MO game begins a new season for the dawgs, especially the O. Cannot replace the guys lost to injuries for the season. Points and (passing) production is bound to fall some. Its wake up time for the D and CTG. Can’t depend on AM and the O to carry them. They have to keep GA in games from now on. Otherwise get rid of CTG. There was good bad and ugly:

While TN is not a good team yet and the Dawgs made them look better than they really are… this Vols team is much better than the one that lost to OR and FL earlier in the year.

Lots to complain about, but first the Good:

We kicked a 57 yard field goal. How about Murray and cast on that last drive? The defense did look awfully good for the first half and part of the 3rd quarter (until the wheels came off). You can’t complain about 3 points to any SEC team on the road in a half. JJ looks like the real deal at running back. How ’bout Wooten answering the bell when he was called upon? We successfully covered a wheel route! We were running the ball successfully with Marshall before his injury. We got the W!

I-DOG

The Bad:

We missed a 39 year field goal when we were up 17-3 and that started changing the momentum. 39 yarders aren’t automatic, but this miss hurt more than most. We didn’t sub enough early in the game at the LB position and they looked very tired in the 4th. We were very poor on 3rd down offensively until the last drive of regulation. Not being able to sustain drives because we couldn’t convert 3rd downs put the D on the field too much. A lot of that had to do with these latest injuries we were playing our 3rd and 4th string freshman running backs when we weren’t expecting to play them a lot and we were playing our 4th, 5th, and 6th best WR’s when we weren’t expecting to have to depend on them. Rhett had a bad game.

We won the game by kicking a field go in the first OT period, however, what was with that offensive series. We start with the ball at the 25, a 42 yard field goal to win the game. Just get 5 yards and we SHOULD be good, right? We lose nearly 4 yards on a running play on first down. Probably the biggest loss on a run ALL SEASON. Now it is nearly a 46 yard field goal… no chip shot. we line up in the shotgun and throw a deep pass down the sideline, incomplete, still a 46 yard field goal. We run the ball and barely get 2 1/2 yards and successfully kick about a 44 yarder, but that was a TERRIBLE offensive series that could have cost us.

Once again I see that my fellow Dawgs are taking pot shots at Coach Grantham instead of demanding and flooding the SEC offices with complaints about the dirty officiating. What I want to know is anybody at Georgia addressing the inequity by SEC officials that keeps occurring each week and it doesn’t matter who they play? There was only one offensive holding penalty called on Tennessee this past Saturday, there were so many blatant holds even the announcers commented a couple of times. Not one targeting penalty or late hit was called on Tennessee now our punter has a concussion on a helmet to helmet hit on that blocked punt. I would be demanding that the officiating crew that officiated Saturday be fired as on each possession they were marking the ball forward for Tennessee and marking it back on the Dawgs. How many deliberate low hits at our players knees were allowed to go without something being said or done about it.

My fellow Dawgs keep harping about Coach Grantham and the defense but miss more important things that happened Saturday- the dirty play of Tennessee which in my opinion was deliberate. I counted at least 6 times that Murray was hit late and no calls were made, does he need to be injured like Marshall, Bennett, Scott-Wesley etc who had their knees targeted before Coach Richt calls the head of SEC officials out on this. You wonder why our defense was so inept on 3rd downs if you were paying attention you would have seen Tennessee players with their hands full of Georgia defensive players jerseys, and I counted at least 5 times had their arms wrapped around the Georgia player and no calls were made. Even the CBS announcers commented a couple of times on this.

Heartbreaking in my opinion is that nothing seems to change with the SEC in allowing the continuing obvious grudge SEC officials have had against Georgia since that play in the 2007 Georgia/Florida game.

I don’t know what the deal is with hicks. If richt is still mad about his poor effort against north texas then suspend the guy and get it over with, you’re limiting his play so much that it is pretty much a suspension anyways. If he isn’t suspended put the guy on the field and keep him there.

Special teams is awful, I don’t even know if the answer is a special teams coach but it couldn’t hurt. Teams aren’t scared of UGA returning a punt or a kick. With the punt return opposing teams think at worse they’ll give up a fair catch, at best the guy will fumble it or make some other kind of bonehead decision. This year the punt blocking is awful also, not to mention the fact that every other team in America can kickoff into the endzone regularly but UGA kickers need the wind to their back and even then it is a miracle.

Then the defense, as stated before and in this article we’re around the midpoint of the season, these guys aren’t rookies anymore. The pass defense is just pathetic and the answer isn’t always to drop people back, although I think that is grantham’s mindset. Against LSU the only way UGA could stop the pass was to blitz and put pressure on the qb. It’s time for grantham to start earning that huge paycheck.

I remember like yesterday the hiring of CTG and thinking CMR made the hard decision to cut loose CWM that was possible over due. I like CMR tremendously both as a man, mentor and coach. While the hire did improve the team I feel the defense certainly has not lived up to mine and others expectations. It is not from lack of talent so what does that leave left. It seems a real shame that we are having the injuries to the offense. I give a lot of credence to the belief that offenses will win you games but defenses win NC. We do not have a defense any where close to the caliber of Bama’s and why this team will at best see us get to the sec championship game. We could never play with a team the likes of Oregon and the fact we beat the Vols by the skin of our teeth and the Ducks annihilated them earlier this year gives me a pretty clear picture of where this Dawg team is currently. If CTG can’t turn things around with his defense this season it might be time to reassess after the season. I wish for the best this year. Go Dawgs!

[...] As I discuss here, this is actually an acceptable time for injuries.  Georgia’s next three weeks are its softest stretch to-date.  And, there is reason to believe Georgia can still score points in each of its next two games. Image via. [...]

Recall that Grantham was about our 3rd or 4th choice. I thought it was a suspect hire from the get go, but I also knew that we had to try something different regardless. It’s time to try something different again I’m afraid. I must say that I’m not sure another fan base grows as attached to its assistants as some of my fellow Georgia fans. At other elite programs assistants are hired and fired and come and go without anyone batting an eye. But at Georgia the Kool Aid crowd takes this stuff real personally. I can understand the affection for Bobo and other alum assistants but Grantham? The guy is a hired gun. What do you care? I just don’t get it.

Looking at it again, the defense was no where near as bad as Dawgfan, bulldog 35, and Flat Tire are suggesting.

At halftime, The Vols had amassed 3 points. Against any SEC team that is winning defensive football. Through three quarters it was only 10 points given up by the D.

A few minutes into the 4th quarter, the Georgia defensive again had a big three and out. They were giving the ball back to the Georgia offense with what should have been pretty good field position. TN lined up to punt and we got called for a very peculiar defensive delay of game penalty when one of our players moved sideways before the snap (not into the neutral zone). That 5 yard penalty by the special teams was HUGE. Now it is 4th and 1 and TN is down and they decide to go for it from deep within their own territory. They call a Fantastic outside pitch that goes for about 40 yards when we lose containment. We rally from that and make two good defensive stops. It is about 3rd and 7 and they get a critical 3rd down and go on from there to score a touchdown for the 17th point given up by the D. The last 8-9 minutes the D lost it mentally and the linebackers were worn down and the criticism is fair for the meltdown of the D in the 4th quarter, but it really did play well for about 48 minutes.

Just a thought.

UT’s gameplan, similar to Bama’s last year and LSU’s the year before was to let the D wear itself out and attack in the second half. Butch Davis said so: “If we can just get them to the fourth quarter…”

That being said, it is important to have and use reserves on D in the first half, but it is paramount to put more points on the board in the first half to make the comeback insurmountable.

Blake Tibbs (WR) RS freshman has the talent – and can go deep. 4.4 40 as does Davis. Along with Conley they can go vertical. The TE’s will become more involved as they did last year when Marlon Brown and Michael Bennett went down.

Marshal is great as a receiver – there is where J.J. Green comes in.

Those complaining about Hicks not being used enough – he has a sprained knee and ankle and is doubtful for Mizzou.

If Gurley isn’t ready I expect A.J. Thurman (RB) true freshman who has recovered from injuries now (4 star power runner with 4.5 speed) to see his 1st action of the year. No need to hold anyone back with more depth at RB coming in next year.

That’s not Coach Bobo that goes conservative, it’s Coach Richt. He still believes in the concept that you can actually “run up the score”… and that it is unsportsmanlike to do it. That is why they take their foot off the gas unless the other team keeps challenging (stays within a TD or so).. It’s the old school gentlemenly football mentality.

Personally, I think it is more demeaning to an opponent if you do not feel that your team has to give it’s absolute best on every play to beat them. I think it is demeaning to your players to not require that they give their all on every play no matter what the score is

The offense is supposed to score points. PERIOD. I’d tell my opponents up front that my guys will be trying to score on every play no matter what the score is. I am not running up the score to humiliate your team. I am asking my players to honor their team by playing full bore for the full 60 minutes. The score does not matter I may put in guys to get experience but they will be running the same offense we run when the score is 0-0.

You have got to be the most negative DAWG fan ever. Does anything look good to you about Georgia? You are being unrealistic if you think Georgia should be going 14-0 every year. You may not like Richt, Bobo or Grantham but just who do you think we would hire to replace them where we wouldn’t have to always worry about them going elsewhere. Coaching changes have decimated Tennessee , Auburn, Texas, Southern Cal, Penn State,
I have got to trust that Richt and McGarity will address any personnel issues after the season ends but to never have anything positive to say , isn’t helping any. I have concerns just like you do and those issues can be discuss here but to never have anything positive to say certainly doesn’t help 18 to 22 year old kids who needs to have their confidence built up not constantly put down.
You have no idea all the issues behind the scene that Richt , his staff and McGarity are dealing with. This is not a perfect world and how we handle it define what kind of person we end up being.

7576Dawg, you’re being unrealistic if you think we have to lose at least 2 games every year and never win a championship. That’s not very realistic at all. This program can do better. You and your ilk are the ones that have a problem with reality, not us.

Again.. does NO ONE remember that the 2011 team was one of the best defenses in the country? They looked bad against Boise St. and then from that point until the end of the 1st half of the SEC CG, they were lock down. They were mentioned in the same breath as Bama and LSU.

What a myopic society we are! If it happened more than 12 months ago we forget it unless it’s bad… then we hold onto it forever. What have you done for me lately? The defense under performed last year and (guess what?) all you have to do is look at Clowney to figure it out why. Hmmmm… guess Ward and Spurrier suddenly became sucky, huh?

That’s because you didn’t play another ranked team until the SECCG. Your “defense” averaged over 35 pts to ranked teams that year. THIS…THIS is why UGA cannot win a title. Your idiot fans like NCDAWG think they that stopping Kentucky is worthy of of a BAMA/LSU comparison.

Using the 2011 defense as an example to prove that the defense vastly improved and was somehow a great defense is laughable

why?

Take the stats from the ranked teams played and compare them to non-ranked teams played that year

When you do you will want to drop the 2011 example as an argument to say that was a great defense

AltamahaDawg

here is what the Beat writer who covers UGA said after watching the replay:

“When Scott-Wesley went down, the final player to be hurt, it was Georgia 17-10. Bennett went down when it was 17-3. And it was clear Aaron Murray and company needed some time to adjust, which they eventually did.

- Still, did Georgia’s offense get conservative when it went up 17-3? Yes, but it was also without its top two tailbacks, and receivers were gradually getting hurt. And what some have overlooked is the running game was still working enough to justify trying to stay balanced. Brendan Douglas and J.J. Green broke into the secondary a few times in the third quarter, and Green had a 19-yard run on the game-tying drive in the final two minutes. It’s not like the run wasn’t working.

So if you’re Bobo, you’re thinking you can still run the ball well enough to keep Tennessee honest, especially with your receivers down. Green had runs of 12 and 7 in the fourth quarter, when it was tied at 24. That drive then stalled when a fullback draw to Merritt Hall was stuffed on second down. Again, hindsight says another call, but again, look at all the weapons suddenly missing.

BTW I was real… you figured in the SEC CG and that made the numbers lopsided. We held them with a first down in the 1st half. Even Bama didn’t do that when the steamrolled them in the BCS CG. That is the way it is. You also figured in the scoring from the opponents defense and special teams. Against SC we gave up a special teams TDs and 2 defensive TD’s. The defense did not give up those 3 TDs. Against LSU in the SEC CG. A punt return and a pick 6. 14 points that should not be charged against the defense.

Stats can be spun any way you want… the defense was better than just good and a hair short of great. You just don’t want to admit that you cherry picked your stats.

I just want to know………..

what is so wrong with wanting your team to win a conference championship once every 5 years or so; have a few one loss seasons every now and then and play for a national championship once every 15 years or so

I understand there are going to be down years with 8-4 type seasons but lets be honest

The state of Georgia is a top 5 recruiting state (Louisianna; Florida; Texas; and California are the others) and guess what; it so happens that those states have a team that has produced a national championship in the last 15 years plus won multiple conference championships

oh and UGA has put more players in the NFL since 98 than any other school in the nation except for 2 other schools (and they arent LSU, BAMA; AUB or FL) yet those teams win National Championships and go undefeated

so I say again Im not considered a fan when I think the tools are there to do better than losing 2 or more games every season

The question to ask about Coach Grantham is, what does he do for our defense that a hundred other DC’s across the country couldn’t do for our defense if they were in charge? If he’s done something special, it sure is difficult to identify. We give up points and yards by the bushel against the best (and sometimes not the best) teams that we play. I’m just asking.

This is not to argue that the D is hunkydory or that Grantham doesn’t need to EARN that big fat paycheck. This is just something to consider to balance the criticism. There are problems, too, that must be addressed, third and long in particular.

Clemson averages 44.2 points a game, 14th in the nation. LSU averages 45.5 points a game, 9th in the nation. South Carolina averages 31 points a game, 62nd in the nation. UT averages 31.7 a game, 56th in the nation. North Texas averages 27.4, 80th in the nation.

UGA has held every team they have played to below that teams average scoring. This is a little dubious but no more dubious than some of the negative conclusions being drawn based on these stats.

Clemson scored 38 on the Dogs, one being an easy 6 after a fumbled snap on a punt.
South Carolina scored 30 on the dogs.
North Texas scored 7, but that was on a returned punt.
LSU scored 41.
UT scored 31 on the dogs with 6 coming on a blocked punt returned for a TD.

In Tajh Boyd, Connor Shaw, and Zach Mettenberger, UGA has faced three of the finest QBs in the nation. Yes, I think Connor Shaw is grossly underrated. I also think that UT is a team that is getting better every week. They are not the same team that played UF, and UF had them in the Swamp not at Hillbilly Central.

LuckyDawg

At least the injuries taught us the value of having a RB with fresh legs in the fourth quarter. Just hope those guys can perform when the defense that they’re facing has fresh legs. James Franklin was playing with an injury last year. This year, he’ll be 100%. This ain’t no cupcake game coming up.

In 2 weeks Clemson will play FSU; UT will start a tough little string of SC, Alabama, Mizzou, and AU; LSU will have faced UF and will play Ole Miss, and SC will have played Arky, will play UT, and then Mizzou and Missy State.

These coming games will certainly provide some perspective, though none of these teams faced each other in the first two games.

You are absolutely correct. Mizzou is not a cupcake. All summer we talked about the season like after LSU it was going to be a foregone conclusion. It is not. This is a much improved Mizzou team that would like nothing better to avenge their loss at home last season. Beat UGA and Mizzou has a solid shot of winning the East. This is a big game. I hope the fans turn out. As the HC pointed out, they could use the help.

Vandy will give you a game if you take them lightly. Then, of course, there is Jax. AU continues to improve, and GT will give UGA a game if UGA is lax about it. There is a lot of season left, and the Dawgs need fan support.

Old Dog, I agree the D is bad, particularly third and long. That is how I opened. I am just saying that if we are going to consider how many points have been scored against us, we should also consider how many points are scored on other teams. The second statement I posted merely states that games over the next three weeks will give us some more perspective. Actually Dawg Fan’s statement about LSU and UF supports that completely. I am not a Grantham apologist or defender.

ALB-dawg

Of course they won’t be able to move the ball against SC and Bama like they did against UGA. Those teams have better Defenses. That goes without saying. But, I bet they’ll give SC a game.

ALB-dawg

Bama shut out Ole Miss. That’s impressive. The only other team they played, though, is the Aggies, and they scored 42. How does LSU and Clemson compare to the Aggies? I don’t know. Again, I am not trying to say that Defense is good or defending the missed assignments and tackles. I just don’t see it as a lost cause, and I am not sure that the stats at this juncture mean a whole lot. There are some good players and a whole lot of potential on our D. I can’t do anything about it, either way. I am hoping to see some young players grow up and succeed.

ARdawg

You’d have to be blind literally to not see we have some defensive problems. But, all the p!ssin and moaning in the world about it won’t make a dimes worth of difference. The young defense was showing some early promise but, now 5 games in doesn’t seem to be moving much on the improvement scale. That’s coaching IMHO. It’s something Richt needs to address and sooner rather than later. I can’t recall a Georgia defense being this bad. It won’t get any easier this week or the next few weeks either

ALB-dawg

October 9th, 2013

One more point for consideration: UT’s drives totaled 116 yards in the first half, 240 in the second half, and 24 in over time. UT scored 3 points in the first half and 28 in the second half. Why? The dogs did nothing in the third quarter with the exception of Murray’s big run (which was brilliance). They had one sustained drive in the second half. The defense in not only young, it is thin. An offense that either scores to quickly or goes three and out a few times is going to kill its own D. More points in the first half would have made the Vols play much more one dimensional, as well. The point here: Yes the D is bad, but the O and Special Teams (blocked punt) didn’t make it any easier for them.

dawgfan

October 9th, 2013
11:51 am

You’re talking out of both sides of your mouth. You claim to understand that the defense has problems but then you make excuses for them. The offense won’t be scoring on every drive so they need to be prepared for that. This is also the first time I’ve heard anything about our defense being thin. You Kool Aiders can’t get your stories straight. You Kool Aiders were touting this defense in the preseason based on the allegation that they are deeper than last year’s defense, but now they’re thin? Oh what a tangled web we weave….

The bottom line is that the defense sucks and its not our job to figure out why. That’s Todd Grantham’s job. He needs to do it or we should find somebody else that will. No excuses.

We have given up 161 points overall this year…better than only one sec team….and that is Tennessee. Jancek and willie…plus Grantham sure can’t coach defense…..I think all 3 coaches would be better coaching defense in the little leagues…5-8 year olds…..haha!

We all know blogs were made for all this……..complaining, etc. I love my dawgs; went there in the ’70s. When the o was struggling not so long ago, we knew we lacked a top-notch line and thats where it all starts. Hopefully the injuries don’t knock us out. Bobo took alot of heat, but the o lacked the hosses up front. Anybody that played a down of midget-league cold see that. They have improved.
Our D seems to be something a little different…..can’t put my finger on it but it seems to be answer D: all of the above. Young folks, lack of talent in some areas, and not making half-time adjustments necessary to give it a go. Our o is our saving grace. I would just like to see the complete team. I do think the reason folks are a little more upset is because even though every fan wants an N.C., we had a legit shot if the D could step it up. I think they are trying, but they just are not ready at this juncture.

Hey Bill,
I always enjoy your perspective on the Bulldogs. I wonder if CMR being a Godly man has thought about the story of Gideon in the O T book of Judges… When he started for battle he had a huge army but eventually reduced it to 300 men. Even so they won their battle. It is an encouraging story for anyone whose “team” has been reduced beyond full strength. There is always hope if “you keep the faith”! I’m believing! Go Dawgs!!

Dawgfan and Olddawg:

You are waiting to see if TN can move the ball against South Carolina and Alabama like they did against us and you don’t think they will:

First, I agree that our defense has not been good through 5 games and I don’t think we are going to be as good as Alabama on defense this year (how is that for an understatement?)

However, TN didn’t really move the ball on Georgia like some may think.

Remember, TN scored a whopping 3 points by halftime. Can’t do a whole lot better than that.

TN scored a very acceptable 10 points on the defense by the start of the 4th quarter. Again, given how many points this defense had given up to 3 very good offenses, that is a number I can live with. Then, Georgia got a very important 3 and out with about 11 minutes to go in the game and TN had no choice but to punt the ball from deep in their own territory on 3rd and 6 when our special teams got called for (lets call it an unusual and exotic penalty) and it made it fourth and one and TN decided to go for it.

With 11 minutes to go, Georgia had surrendered 10 points defensively and then the wheels came off. TN didn’t move up and down the field on Georgia until those last two drives of regulation. I agree that the defense has to perform better than they did on that last drive and a half against TN or we won’t be playing in the SECCG and won’t have any shot at winning it.

Missouri is averaging about 42 points a game. I think we can hold them to 27 or under.

No apology needed there guy. I agree with most of what you said other than, we are not thin at defense. Quite the opposite. We are talent rich and deep, the problem is game experience. The ones with the most are playing. They are not getting it done granted but, they are likely the best athletes. I’m pointing to and the indications are the coaching. Seems like 1st and 2nd down they are doing a great job, not so much on 3rd and 4th. They are making tackles much better than the previous 2-3 years but, making the tackle after the 25-30 gain is being reactive rather than proactive and not allowing the play to execute to begin with

Dawgs are ranked #7…. it’s not like they are Tech or some other loser.

Eliminate the special teams errors like they did against LSU and they will be in the game all the way.

Vowels got a phantom TD catch in the 3rd – 7 points
Vowels got a blocked punt – 7 points

Subtract that and you have – 17 points – the same amount scored against Oregon.

No one has discussed the decision to start Wiggins (CB) over Langley in his 1st start. His inexperience showed as he was a step behind in coverage all day. Mauger was out of position on several 3rd down passes. They were freshmen starting their 1st game. add in all the injuries, the missed field goal and a blocked punt. Amazing how UGA could keep it together and still win the game.

My theory is this week the starters on offense will be set, no surprising injuries to disrupt the “O”.
The special teams will play like they did against LSU. They only screw up every other week.
Connor Norman will be starting at SS – an improvement due to experience.
Wouldn’t be surprised if Langley was back in there at CB – unless he has an injury they are hiding?

A.J. Thurman (RB) may get his 1st action… 4 star power runner with decent speed & very physical.

*** Big plus – The game is ‘tween the hedges.

YES MIZZ- WHO? dominated Vandy but so what? Vandy couldn’t even beat an Ole Miss team that got crushed by Bama 25-0.

Another undefeated and ranked team comes to Athens- deja vue all over again?

#1 S.C. Game Clucks

ARDawg, agreed.

3rd and long plays, they tend to go three down linemen and get burned. The one time they didn’t they were successful but somehow… I guess the UT receiver has a really long foot. Anyway after that they went soft again on 3rd down. I think you are absolutely right about game experience, and that seems to be underappreciated here in blogland. Sure, some of the guys enrolled early, but going up against senior receivers in hostile stadiums is very different that practice. There may be coaching issues. I don’t know. It is not pertinent to this particular discussion. I also agree that, though, there have been some missed tackles, it has greatly improved since the era of the thud.

dawgfan

I disagree on the tackling. I don’t see much improvement there. How many times this year have we seen a guy in position to make a play at the LOS only to see the ball carrier do a little shimmy and pick up another 4 or 5 yards? It’s like somebody scratching their fingernails down a chalk board to me. Grantham has this tough guy persona but our defense has been about as soft as I’ve ever seen it since he got here. There’s no killer instinct. No tenacity.

Thanks.

Mizzou has not played a top 25 team or no where near one! Have even bothered to consider that?

UGA has played THE most difficult schedule in this nation and will play another undefeated (#25) team this week in Athens.

UGA has already defeated TWO teams previously undefeated teams in Athens this year and are soon to make it THREE this weekend.

Teams win games – STATS are numbers on paper. STATS don’t suit up. STATS don’t play offense, defense or special teams. STATS are just numbers on paper.

Dawgs OL and DL will take control of this game and the special teams will be flawless. Why? It’s a team game – not a STATS game and they are playing ‘tween the hedges…… and once again VEGAS says UGA will win.

dawgfan and others,

I think it is obvious that the tackling situation is far better than it was three or four seasons ago even with the freshmen this season. I am not saying it’s perfect, just better. As far as killer instinct or swagger or any of that nonsense, it is fundamentals and assignments that are the key rather than attitude. Boise State vs. the Dawgs (sorry to remind everyone of that) was a great example of how disciplined players can win out over star power and attitude. Another example was West Virginia vs. the Dawgs (sorry again). If they can pressure the QB and trust their assignments (or in some cases know their assignments), it will be enough to get another W. If not, Franlkin will have a big day between the hedges, and we will have to hope that Murray has a bigger day.

One thing that I would do if I was Bobo is use Arthur Lynch in this game, he IS one of our ALL AMERICANS.
Last week against Tennessee I counted 6 or 7 times that our Defense was 1 step away from sacks. They need to blitz when the ball is snapped . Franklin is a mobile Quarterback and they need to penetrate the line and not wait for Franklin to turn up field or Missouri will be in 2ND and 5 or better all day. Georgia has one of the youngest and most inexperienced Defensive starter in the SEC so there are going to be mistakes but we do need to see progress as the year go’s on. With a little help from the Defense we will win out with the Offense we have. Georgia still has plenty of play makers.

Barnum&Bailey

Georgia does have talented players, yet they are consistently inconsistent. You never know what they’ll do from one week to the next, and that’s when they’re all healthy. Even within a single game, they tend to be very inconsistent. They soundly defeated Missouri last year, but they were behind in the third quarter. Same with North Texas and Tennessee this year. Neither of those teams suddenly became “elite” on the day that Georgia played them. On the other hand, they played well against LSU. Hard to say whether South Carolina was highly overrated when Georgia played them. They’ve been a little shaky this year, and they haven’t really played anyone of consequence yet except for Georgia.

That’s not to say that I think that they will suddenly, miraculously be the best D in the country. I just think they will be better, and come up with some big stops. Mizzou is good, and there is certainly cause for concern, particularly the extra tall receivers. I won’t slash my wrists if my team gets upset, and I won’t pull for my favorite team to lose, hoping coaches will get fired and expecting those firings to inevitably lead to positive outcomes.
