Aaron Murray the difference-maker in Georgia win over Tennessee

He's done it before and Aaron Murray did it again against the Vols. (Jason Getz / AJC)

Mark Richt’s Bulldogs kept all their season hopes alive with Saturday’s 34-31 overtime win over Tennessee but, man, what a costly victory.

The fates seemed stacked against the Dogs as the UGA sideline looked like a triage area, with three key offensive playmakers — Keith Marshall, Michael Bennett and Justin Scott-Wesley — all helped off the field with demoralizing knee injuries, forcing Georgia to rely on a pair of relatively untested backs and a decimated receiving corps.

But with a gritty next-man-up attitude that saw little-used senior Rantavious Wooten catch six passes and score two TDs and true freshman tailback J.J. Green run for 129 yards, Georgia managed to pull it out before a noisy UT crowd, thanks in part to a sudden about-face by Lady Luck when the Vols’ Pig Howard lost control of the ball diving for the end zone in overtime, resulting in a touchback and Georgia’s ball.

But chiefly the Bulldogs won the game because of Mr. Cool, fifth-year senior quarterback Aaron Murray, now the Southeastern Conference’s all-time leader in career passing yards.

Even as Tennessee ate up clock driving to take a 31-24 lead, I was thinking, “We just need to put the ball in Murray’s hands.”

Richt and his staff probably were thinking the same thing, as it looked like possibly the Georgia defense was told to go ahead and let Rajion Neal waltz into the end zone untouched in order to preserve time on the clock for the Dogs’ comeback. If that was indeed the case, it was a very smart decision.

With 1:54 remaining on the clock, Murray brought his team down the field yet again, and the 75-yard, 10-play scoring drive culminating in a 2-yard touchdown pass to Wooten was exactly what we have come to expect of No. 11.

With Todd Gurley not playing and Keith Marshall hurt, Georgia had to rely on a pair of freshman backs. (Jason Getz / AJC)

With Todd Gurley not playing and Keith Marshall hurt, Georgia had to rely on a pair of freshman backs. (Jason Getz / AJC)

True, it was a much tighter game than it should have been, largely due to a couple of special teams mistakes (a field goal attempt bouncing off a goal post and a blocked punt for a UT touchdown) and the apparent inability of Todd Grantham’s defense to get off the field most of the time on third and fourth down.

In the end, however, placekicker Marshall Morgan, who earlier had set a Neyland Stadium record with a 56-yarder, came through with a clutch OT field goal and his delighted team swamped him in celebration. (My daughter was amused to see a UGA student’s tweet at that moment pleading with Morgan not to tear an ACL in the melee. It was that kind of day.)

If style points are awarded just for running up the score on a lesser opponent, the Dogs won’t be getting any for this win over the Vols. But Georgia probably impressed a lot of folks with the way it managed to earn a gutsy win under pressure on the road with a couple of starters not able to play and amid numerous new injuries.

There’s a lot of football left to play and the Dogs have a lot that needs fixing, particularly on defense. But on this day in Knoxville they got the kind of ugly victory that usually is a hallmark of a special season.

Feel free to share your own views on the nail-biter between the Dogs and Vols. …

How bout dem dawgs!? Unlike any game I have seen injury wise. Unreal. To think that the top 5 offensive weapons(aside from Murray) beginning this season with Mitchell, Gurley, Marshall, JSW, and Bennett all out, what a gutsy win. However our season is probably done, can only sustain so many losses.

Time for another round of apologies from the haters to Aaron Murray. And best wishes for recovery to Keith Marshall, Michael Bennett, Justin Scott-Wesley, and Collin Barber. What a gutsy win.

Todd Grantham needs to go. He is most overrated and over payed Defensive Coordinator in nation.

HE IS TERRIBLE nothing else to say, last year with a defense loaded with NFL talent the exact same thing happened. I will say these young players play hard and dont give up. Enough of the blown assignments, complete confusion, players have no idea what to do, where to line up etc.
Terrible tackling and basic fundamentals obviously are not being taught by Grantham.

Get rid of Grantham…. cut him loose and move on, or its ala Willie Martinez all over again.

It’s going to be tough for the rest of this season. With the loss of so many of our offensive weapons and a defense who can’t stop any team, I don’t know how long the offense can continue to outscore the other teams. It almost happened tonight. But, great win.

Very, very proud of you, Bulldogs, and A. Murray especially, but I’m getting old. This is really just too much excitement for me now. I did something tonight I never would have done years ago. I’m ashamed to say it, but I didn’t have faith. I went and sat down at the table with my family and ate my last few bites of dinner without watching Murray’s final pass attempts that sent it to overtime. My oldest son stood in the hall and shouted updates to me. Come on, Dogs, have some mercy from here on. Could we please have some of those FSU style 63-0 blowouts? In our favor? .

Great win! This shows how we own Vols. Aaron Murray made great plays and reason Dawgs is winning BCS. He simply wills Dawgs win in big games. That is why Coach Richt got him to make big plays when we need its for winning. Can’t wait to put a smackdown on Judas Muschump and Gaytors and then make Bammers pay for last years game.

Wow! What a win! Wow! What a costly win. All the Murray haters can just eat crow. BTW What’s with leaving a ten foot gap between the center and the guard on the punt team? Three guys come through that gap at full speed without being touched. There were at least six UT players in the Georgia backfield when the punt was blocked. Protection FIRST. Then cover the kick.

I am proud of this victory! It was a trap game from the start. We lost our second starting running back, both all americans, and lost our best two wide receivers, making that the top 3 receivers so far this season(which is not even halfway over and I’m exhausted already!). We also lost our PUNTER(seriously!) Did he think he was going to tackle the guy that was crossing the line as he getting blasted? This brutal schedule is taking a toll. Too many freshman, too early and their bones are not showing to be strong enough. Hopefully we can get healthier or we will have to keep winning games UGLYYYY!!!!

I am happy we won the game but I severely concerned with injuries and the (lack of) defense. I think the worst thing I saw all night was the Defensive False Start penalty called against us on 4th and 7. #27 for UGA jumped at the defender when they were about to kick the ball and the ref drops a flag on him… ? really? The guy was nowhere near the deep snapper! I’ve never seen that called in college…ever! No doubt UGA’s defense is the worst in the SEC. No excuses…we should have won this even with the injuries. I hope they get healed up before the Florida game. Go Dawgs!!

Loudest stadium I’ve ever been in. No question. Vol fans said this was the biggest thing they’ve had to cheer about for 4 years.

Never should have been this close! Illegitimate TD pass OB. missed call. Missed FG and blocked punt for TD shouldn’t have gone the way they did.

Our “special teams” …..by “special” we mean handicapped or retarded. I’m sorry, but they are pitiful. They have led to a difference of 31 points NOT in our favor.

Injuries…..if we win out (no chance) then we are really deep on RB’s n WR’s. We really need Gurley. With Gurley n JJ Green we are ok. But WR is getting thin.

For years people dogged Bobo’s play calling. All I can say is thank goodness for Bobo. Grantham makes twice Bobo’s check. He’s paid in the top 10 of DC and his defenses don’t rate in the top 40 in the country. He’s Willie for 3 times the price. How can this continue? The NFL is loaded with Dawgs on Defense. What’s the problem here???? For crying out loud, the Dawgs defense gave the same number of point to UT as South Alabama. Bobo, you are okay with me. Hopefully, you will get a lot more respect.

Refs gave Vols a phantom TD in the end zone when he was out of bounds.

Refs gave Vols another chance on a 3rd down defensive motion penalty – what?

I kept waiting for UGA to throw to the tight ends. Were there even any targets to our tight ends? We’ve got a couple of serious weapons at tight end and they were invisible. I agree UGA’s defense is awful, especially on 3rd down, but when you lose so many people on offense, why not use the tight ends? Special teams continue to be a problem. Somehow, we got the “W”. Give this offense to a real offensive coordinator and the scores are in the 70’s. Whenever you go away from the plays that are picking up big plays to try to “trick” the defense of our opponents you are just helping our opponents. Does the League review games and administer punishment for illegal hits…even those that aren’t called during games? The reason being that the hit on Barber after the blocked punt was as blatant a helmet-to-helmet blow as any I’ve seen, and especially one that wasn’t called…and furthermore, it very well should have been called ‘targeting’. Hell, even the announcers said the block wasn’t needed as it was nowhere near the ball-carrier. If Barber misses any games as a result, then so should the Tennessee player. And while both the Scott-Wesley and Bennett injuries didn’t involve contact, the low-blow on Marshall was reminiscent of when UT targeted Lattimore’s knee and ended his college career and potentially the rest of his football career as well. You go after a players knees often enough, sooner or later somebody’s gonna be seriously injured.

I think our defense is bad enough to have let that happen while giving max effort. It was a break, though. No doubt about it.

Anyway, Grantham has done a terrible job prepping his charges for situational defending. It’s been bad from the opening kickoff in Clemson and hasn’t gotten better. There’s plenty of youth over there, but he recruited these guys. They are his players. You have got to be able to get off the field. The opposition is lighting us up left and right on third AND fourth down plays and we have no answers.

And how about some special teams miscues?

Let’s look at this objectively folks…the defense in the end did give up some bad plays and struggled again with some 3rd and longs and a few 4th downs late in the game. But keep in mind they held the Vols to 3 pts through half way in the 3rd quarter.

The wheels began falling apart with the missed FG (a chip shot by Morgan’s standards). A FG there would have put the Dawgs up by 3 scores and made TN more one-dimensional. Then consider the blocked punt for a TD…nothing to do with defense. Take away the special teams miscues and the Dawgs probably win this game by 10 in regulation.

The punt team is where the real concern lies…absolutely horrible. They were horrible all game and the blocked punt for a TD was nearly a knockout punch considering they were facing a big rival on the road with 100000 fans screaming late in the game.

UT wanted this game really bad…did you see all of the trick plays they pulled out? And who goes twice for 4th down inside of their own 35? These were plays run by a desperate team. And that missed FG and the big injuries in the third quarter gave them a taste of “blood.” There are people who didn’t see the game and just see the score and think…”hangover from last week’s big win.” While that was true to a small extent, UT sold out for this game and still couldn’t win in spite of everything going their way.

I praise the Dawgs and Murray for coming through in this game…a very gutsy performance in an incredibly hostile environment against a rival. UT is so upset right now they may just forfeit next week. Give the Dawgs credit and quit being so critical. The injuries are horrible, but get Gurley back, and get through the next couple of games against Mizzou and Vandy…then get the bye to prepare for a tough UF defense.

This team never gives up…the fans owe it to their team to not dwell in the injury woes and have faith! The defense will start getting some turnovers, and the punt team will finally get their act together.

I haven’t read any of the other comments here but I would like to make two observations: 1) That touchback play in OT was really, really lucky and was not caused by any good play on the part of Ga, insofar as I could see (but hey, they would probably have won anyway with the charmed life they have been living); and 2) it looked like the Ga defense almost certainly let Tenn score so that they could get the ball back with enough time to do something. If so, this was good coaching by CMR (Paul Johnson did the same thing vs. Ga. in 2010 but it didn’t work out so well), and really poor thinking on the part of Tenn who had only to run a couple of plays and get a TD or FG with very little time left.

Grantham really needs to adjust his DEFENSE to the talent we have and play to their strengths… Instead he’s trying 2 make everybody adjust 2 his NFL style D…He doesn’t have a clue. They ran the EXACT same bunch trips play and comverted both times…Todd G should either trust his DB o play more Man or start mixing in the old Tampa 2 defense…we have the pash rush and speed all over the Def to make it work…Regardless CMR is in a tough spot knowing Special Teams are very weak so far this season and Grantham has only made 2 plays worth remembering. The goal line stand vs SC and stopping LSU last drive.

Its very deflating to entire team and coaching staff when our Def cord consistently gets out coached and cannot get off the field on 3rd downs/4th…Todd G please just adjust your schemes 2 better maximize our players strengths and talents…while also hiding their weaknesses. We have given up a TON of points thus far. last year with experience he didnt get the job done…this year we have young talent that ONLY NEEDS TO BE DEVELOPED . step up Todd G

CMR is the MAN…I love the direction he is taking the DAWG NATION. our defense is fast and athletic, strong, physical…Jenkins isnt having sacks/fumbles but then again Herrera misses tackles isnt helping. Jenkins can still make an impact and its just matter of time b4 he starts really growing into his own..Jenkins has all the talents 2 make all the plays. seems like his motor isnt as HIGH as i once thought…Ray drew, G smith, Bailey all are impact guys….Herrera must play like a JR…herrera is a VET but makes rookie mistakes with arm tackles and poor technique…please wrap up 1 time. I counted at least 4 significant plays when Herrera couldve made TFL but instead let the RB/WR gain extra yards. I dont see his value but i understand CMR staying loyal 2 his veteran guys. i rather see what reggie carter can do a few snaps instead of staying loyal to a fault of entire team..

Of course after December, and long after the college football season has ended, there is this obligatory game in February that the winner of the SEC (National) Championship will have to play against some other team from some other division (because we don’t have play offs yet), for the “national championship” — but for many years now, that has never been much of a game, or much of a problem for the winner of the game in the Dome in early December.

Agree except for one thing.

Suppose the Dawgs run the table then knock off Bama in SEC championship showdown.

Hooray.

Think Bestards Control Show (BCS) will leapfrog one loss SEC champion over two unbeaten ones?

Really?

Remember that Oregon and Ohio State play cupcake schedules filled with girl schools and technical institutes.

Officiating crews just are not going to allow OSU to lose as evidenced by transparent Northwestern cheat job.

If that scenario surfaces I will pull for Crimson Tide in order to maintain SEC dominance in national title encounters.

I am sure Dawgs can take OSU and maybe Oregon but I am 100 percent certain that Alabama will crush either at any time.

If playoff is ever initiated then SEC champion will win mythical national championship in dominating fashion every year.

Until that glorious time…

I’m not taking a thing away from Georgia in saying this: the Dawg defense is super shaky. Wow. I’ve watched Georgia 3 times or so now, but gave them the benefit of the doubt due to great opponents. UT is not great but still managed 31. No doubt key injuries gave UT a big advantage, but still, unless that defense improves I can’t see Georgia in the NC mix. Trust me, that defense does not want to see Oregon right now. Congrats to Ga on a gutty win.

Good point standec except here is another scenario: If Clemson wins out (they’ll have to beat FSU and South Carolina) they’ll go to the NC game against Oregon or Stanford if Georgia beats Bama or LSU or AM ito win the SEC championship game.

Special teams cost UGA the game against Clemson and almost cost them the game against the Vols. Quayvon blocked his man but did not hold his block long enough and Barber takes longer than he should to get his kicks off sometimes. So I would the blockd punt was on BOTH.

Morgan is still erratic on his kicks. Missed a easy field goal and almost missed an extra point…. then made a 56 yarder and was clutch in over time. See him getting better but not there yet.

The defense doesn’t finish plays. They’ll hit a guy, not wrap up and then he’ll scurry forward for another 4 or 5 yards. It’s painful to watch. We have to give up more yards after contact than any team in the nation. Fundamentals are lacking. The scheme isn’t working.

Grantham has got to go.

A win is a win, even an ugly win like this one, but the SEC office needs to fire the officiating crew from this game. They did not call one single targeting penalty or late hit on Tennessee and only one holding penalty. I wonder who paid them off. Then they call that phantom delay of game call on the Georgia defensive player on the 4th down punt. I have never seen that before.

Aaron Murray has really grown almost willing this team to victory, special teams are still a concern they take a step forward but the next game they take two steps back again. Time for Coach Richt to stop being so stubborn and hire a special teams coach. I scratch my head on this because he played at Miami under Snellenberger and coached under Bobby Bowden at FSU who both placed a premium on special teams. Still a win is a win.

I was looking at the depth chart online from the start of the year, and we were without or lost our top two TBs, top three receivers, top two safeties, punter, and we were in a loud, hostile environment. Great and gutsy win! Because of the adversity, it might be our toughest win so far. That many injuries to key playmakers messes with morale and the coaches’ confidence. Kudos to Murray and all of our leaders for pressing the team. Vols played hard, too. Special teams were key contributors in the loss and keeping TN and UNT in their games. You can’t expect to win games with blocked punts; we are just giving away points. I thought we could have put it away, but we started playing and playcalling not to lose, or to just hang on to the lead, and that allows the other team to load the box and stop us, but the coaches had to consider a lot. We had receivers not turning around on back shoulder throws, backs dropping passes–Dawgs have a lot of work for an undefeated and strong Mizz team coming in…but, Great win! Congrats to all.

Those of you who post comments about the officials not making calls or “being on the Vols payroll” are cheapening this Georgia victory and making fools of yourselves.

National championship caliber teams almost always have at least one close game each year but find a way to win anyway and go on to the national title. I really do think Georgia may be in that category this season. The injury situation is serious, but hopefully the Dawgs have the depth to overcome that issue, too.

I’m so proud of our dawgs for beating the vol’s for 4 years in a row! We had them up 17-3…..in our first possession of the 2nd half…we drove all the way down the field by running ball…the vols stuffed us once we got into the red zone….only because of mike bobo’s poor play calling….I mean why didn’t we attempt a pass on that drive? It looked like we were just settling for a FG on that possession!!! Smh! We ended up missing the FG anyway. This is a problem folks. We get to conservative on offense when we have a lead!!!! How many leads have we blown this year? Also bobo still doesn’t know how to utilize all of our weapons! Where was hicks and Rome??

I have an idea.

Let’s make CTG the special teams coach. Maybe there’s something he can do right!

Bobo sometimes reverted to form, called super predictable plays that didn’t fit our available personnel, didn’t consistently well use Aaron Murray, and seemed to forget about our tight ends. Still, CMB did his job 1000 times better than the person laughingly referred to as our Defensive Coordinator.

Aaron Murray – Fantastic Bulldog Super-Star.

Our freshman running backs – Wow.

Anybody notice how good Tennessee looked. Based on what I saw they should win out.

Without major help from the coaching staff – starting with Mark Richt having a come to Jesus talk with his staff – can Aaron Murray carry the team on his back, overcome all the coaching flaws, pull rabbits out of hats, and win out?

I sure hope so…

Go, Bulldogs!

This game challenged Georgia and if the players understand that to be really great you have to rise to those times and overcome as a team. This was a win that defined the team and kept them together tighter than ever.

I am proud of Georgia and the way they as a team stayed focused and executed the game plan. I must admit the defense still needs a lot of work and I hope this is resolved soon. I am shocked at the pro Bobo comments on here. Bobo is so predictable. We should have put Tenn away in the first half. Tenn is a horrible team and we continued to give them confidence because BoBo couldnt put them away. I am a huge Richt fan and grantham is suspect too but we all know he is playing 10+ freshman. Grantham needs to be fired. He had absolutely no clue what UT was going to do on any of the fourth down situations on the last UT drive. Two of those knee injuries, the Vols never touched the injured player. It was freaky bad luck. Marshalls also freaky bad luck with the angle he got hit. Clemmons was wide open on that play. I still don’t know why Murray didn’t throw it to him other than it was designed for the RB in the flats.

Tennessee played lights out, they elevated their game to the highest level they’ve played in years. They wanted it badly, we walked in wounded, left mortally wounded, but still won. We did tons wrong, but still won. Character isn’t built in a day, it takes seasons. This team is growing character wise every game. This is a game we would have lost in past years.

It wasn’t pretty, we didn’t play our best, but still won against a highly motivated team, with SEC talent, in their house. I personally didn’t enjoy the game, watching those kids being carried off the field hurt me, thought we should have dominated, but we managed to make the plays required to win. Lady luck finally came back around to our side when we needed her.

My thoughts are with the players that have worked so hard, good luck, get your education, that’s the most important reason you’re at UGA now.

Maybe Richt will arrange an offer to Grantham to go back to the NFL and bring in a SEC caliber DC, I truly believe we have to much talent to be playing as inconsistent as we are this far into the season.

If luck is truly a commodity of a NC team, Richt had his share yesterday, both good and bad.

No real Dawg fan should be complaining this morning.

Some NFL team, believe it or not, OR another mid level college program, will take CTG off of our hands.

UGA does have Rumph at 6′5″ that has been dealing with a nagging hamstring. Additionally, we have Blake Tibbs from Atlanta. The Frosh Terry from SC is still healing up from his own knee surgery of 14 months ago, while in HS ball. Doubt that he will play this season.

The UGA O line appears to be very good, based on the pertinent stats.

Yes, the D MUST solidify or we are in big T vs MO, Auburn, Florida and GT.

Just be happy with your weak schedule for the rest of the year and thankful you don’t have to play A&M, they would score 70 points on you pretenders. Oh, and if you guys had played LSU at Baton Rouge they probably would have scored 70 on you. Good teams overcome adversity. Georgia lost key offensive stars and still managed to eek out a win. Aaron Murray has finally proven himself after years of miscues. If, by some miracle Georgia wins the SEC, he should win the Heisman.

Even last year, if played at Neyland, this would have been a loss. This was supposed to be the Vols “signature” win, thankfully not at the Bulldogs’ expense. Regardless of the Vols ranking, this is payback for the 90’s. It’s almost as sweet as beating the Nerds year after year.

Once again we can’t put a team away!!! The 1st and 2nd quarter we did everything we wanted but score!!! Bobo’s play calling is only good when he has to be. When have we ever thrown the ball 3 straight times except when we are coming from behind!!! We have a senior qb and yet Bobo is still to conservative to let Murray chunk it every down. The reason injuries occured to our starters is because by halftime they should have been watching from the bench!!! Conservative coaching with no killer instinct. Week after week and year after year we play not to lose instead of to win. The possession before Tennessee took the lead we had 4th and 4 on their side of the 40. Never should have punted!!! The offense with a senior qb or put our middle school defense on the field STUPID!!! The defense is a joke because we can’t even get lined up. There is no pre snap movement except when we blitz we just line up and the offense adjusts!!! This is NOT a nfl coached defense. Watch the better defenses and you will see plenty of pre snap movement and the d line will every once in a while back up and take away the dump of the middle passes that KIll us!!! It should’ve been 31-3 in the start of the 3 rd quarter….but bobo just got way to conservative. Maybe bobo listened to all the fans who complained about the offense scoring to fast as to why he didnt just put ball in Murray’s hands and have throw it more in the 1st half. I’m for one who never complained about that. Who cares if the defense gets tired…heck they can’t even stop teams when they’re not! tired! We could’ve put 50 plus points on the board but we just don’t know how to utilize all of our weapons…

The Heisman is for the best college athlete and no one is in the class of Manzel, no one. If he plays four years of college ball and avoids injuries I could see him winning four Heisman trophies.

Bulldawg35,

I agree with you about the Dawgs getting conservative…it was very obvious on that drive that led to the missed FG. In defense of this however, keep in mind the injuries were getting pretty bad by that point and the Dawgs wanted to just get the heck out of there with the W…which getting a 3 score lead would just about do given the way the defense was playing up to that point.

I can see why they would play for the FG in this case. However, if Bobo had known that the FG would be missed, and that the special teams would later give up a TD on the blocked punt…I’m sure he would have called differently, right?

Eric C.

Special teams are so underrated…a big special teams play can turn a game and a season around in a heartbeat. e.g., 2002 Falcons vs Packers playoff game, 2006 Saints vs Falcons, LSU in 2011, etc. etc. These catastrophic failures by the punt team are killing the Dawgs right now…get that $$$$ corrected!

The defense is pretty bad but they had only given up 3 points into the 3rd quarter. The problem is Bobo always going into a cowardly shell. Murray did a heckuva good job of overcoming Bobo and injuries and terrible special teams and pulling out a great UGA victory.

Flat, I agree, the D hasn’t shown any consistency all year. Richt should probably make a change but we know that won’t happen and why. This is one of several areas Richt fails as a head coach. Fortunately for him he’s able to recruit some great athletes that mask most of his weaknesses as a Head Football Coach.

Defense: Don’t blame the LB…they have had to play every snap of every game which means they are doing it in practice also. They are the only group that doesn’t get a break during a game. If you read the interviews they have to stay on the field because of the way TG has the defense structured. WOW.

JHC is a safety not a knickel back. Not a cover guy. He would be more useful at safety..more athletic but they are determined to have Matthews (even though he didnt play) play that spot. Because Granthom “likes” him even though we can see is isn’t ready. dont get it wrong he will be a great player for the dawgs but not yet.

Offense: JJ Green had 129 yds….if any other back had those numbers EVERYONE would be talking about it. His runs were huge. Bobo should have kept running that kid he could have had more and kept Tenn. off and OUR defense on the sideline where they belong.

Brendon Douglas is a full back. period. Yet they are trying to sell to us he is a tailback. Why is the staff forcing him and Hall on the field when it is clear JJ and Hicks are the better back ups??? …THINGS THAT MAKE YOU HMMMMMMM!!!

TEAM: I read a post on here that said that there are few athletes on the team that remain out of favor with the coaches or that the staff has issues with them so they are not playing. Sheldon Dawson may be one of them. Shaq is a good kid…I knew Langly was in trouble after the interview he gave last week…but the fact that Dawson can’t sniff the field as bad as this secondary has performed….and there are a few others. Gotta be good at the POLITIC game Sheldon.

I get the frustration with the defense but the complaints about the offense and bobo are unfounded. We lost our top 2RB’s and 2-3 WR’s. At some point that does impact the game.

Play in the SEC and you will have games like this almost every year. We will have more games like this later this year…

Tennessee was going to punt and would have if the official had not thrown a flag on Sailor’s for stepping to his right because he was trying to time the snap . uga2004, you may be right, but I really hate it when people throw in the towel at the first sign of adversity! A little history lesson from your elders: 33 years ago we barely beat a mediocre Tennessee team in Knoxville, 16-15. A few games later, #1 Alabama beat them 27-0, and those Vols would later go on to be just 5-6 on the year. Of course, you know the rest of the 1980 UGA story I hope! The point is–let’s not give up the dream just yet. It almost ended in Neyland, but you will have close games on every championship team, and you never know how it will play out. I am sure that anybody thinking about the #1 Tide back then, blowing the Vols out like they did, meant we didn’t stand a chance, but Alabama got their challenge later on vs. MS. State of all teams, and Notre Dame finished them. Everybody will have down games and we were perfectly set up on this one. These Dawgs overcame a lot of adversity to win in Knoxville. A lot of us fans can’t even overcome the adversity of watching the game, apparently. It could end this week, but let’s keep the faith until then! Go Dawgs.

The problems on D can be fixed, folks. CTG knows what he is doing. Our back end has to improve quickly, but our biggest problem is that we aren’t getting enough pressure on the QB. The line is actually doing pretty well. We have to get pressure from our OLBs in CTGs scheme. They are set up to do it, and so far Floyd has gotten some pressure but Jenkins hasn’t gotten much. If he can’t produce, we have to find someone who can. I love the kid, but his position *has* to get pressure on the QB to stop opposing passing games. Imagine our record last year without Jones. 2008 oregon team was just about same talent as the team you have now minus most of the stars
oregon did not have a gurley but they won 10 games most by average of 19 points
oregon did not have great defense so they had to out score the other teams

now coach richt YOU SURE DO NOT HAVE A GREAT DEFENSE

DO NOT RUN UP THE MIDDLE STOP WASTING PLAYS ——-TELL BOBO THINK THINK THINK
TELL HIM TO WATCH OREGON WHICH HAS NEVER HAD THE BEEF OF ALABAMA OR EVEN STANFORD BUT TAKES THE HEART OUT OF OTHER TEAMS BY BEING ELUSIVE

they must have a class in pure logic at the university so take your coaches to this class because they seem not to be able to adapt to the new reality of college football ——texas am beat alabama last year only because saban forgot this is not bear football any longer

you have to make a drastic change NOW MONDAY MORNING
IF NOT MISSOURI WILL BEAT YOU BLIND

OUTSIDE RUNS OUTSIDE PASSES DUMPS SLANTS NO MORE POWER FOOTBALL ——-YOUR STARTS ARE MINUS THEIR KNEES ——WHAT HAPPENS IF MURRAY GOES DOWN–WHAT HAPPENS IF CONLEY GOES DOWN——WHO IS LEFT BECAUSE YOUR PLAYING DAYS ARE LONG OVER AND ARE YOU GOING TO ASK HERSCHEL BACK FOR THAT LAST YEAR OF ELIGIBILITY

this may be the year that the new breed of coaching takes over and woody and bear are long forgotten and even spurrier and saban are now pass their prime

A tremendous, gusty, come-from-behind (at the end) overtime game! I couldn’t be more proud of our team overcoming multiple devastating injuries, a highly-motivated UT team, and a deafening crowd that was in it to win it. Once again, Aaron Murray, his O-line and his receivers were outstanding!

As for Coach Grantham, what exactly does he do for us that any of a hundred DCs couldn’t do? We allowed one of the worst offenses in the conference (although admittedly with a very good Offensive line) to just dominate us a key times in the game. Yes, we are young, but we have gotten very little out of him as a DC in the big games since he has been a UGA. He still has time to get it corrected but right now he is just lucky to have this offense and to have a “Pig” fumble the ball and essentially give us the game.

There have been real championships since 1998 with the formation of the BCS. Now, you may not agree with the way it was setup (and YES it was and has been highly flawed) but it was certainly real. No debating anyone on this… we won that is more than 99% of all other teams would have done. 99.8%… only a couple of teams could gut that out and not every single time either. Never been prouder to call myself a Bulldawg.

It seems like the referees have changed their approach in recent years with calls at the line of scrimmage. Like many of you, I had never seen a delay of game called because a player “stomped” his foot. They also now put more of the burden on the defense. It used to be that a player could come across the line and get back onsides and as long as no contact was made, it would not be called. Now, if the O-lineman jumps, the penalty is on the Defense.

On the other hand, with all of the movement allowed by the O-line when they adjust the play call, the refs are still very picky about movement by the O-line, calling a penalty if the lineman so much as bobs his head. A lot of it seems pretty arbitrary to me but maybe it’s because I don’t know the intricacies of the rules and changes that have been made.

You people saying Bobo called a lousy game because we didn’t involve our tight ends obviously don’t know the first thing about football. There is not a single defined play like in a sandlot game. You don’t say “hey Rome, go towards the lamppost and I’ll hit you with a pass.” Every play is a progression and a read.
The decision on whom to pass the ball to is made in a rapid fire series of decisions based on the defense and the movement. The QB must see the TE getting off the block and into the route in real time. The TE may be the first option, but if the QB sees that the defense is shifting to cover him or he doesn’t get off the line clean, then he goes to the next receiver in the progression.

Not the best game I have ever seen but they pulled it out with out Gurley Marshall Mitchell Bennett and JSW and if that doesn’t prove a Nat’l Championship team I don’t know what does

Dawgs won the game on the Tick Hounds turf with every break except one going against them.

That is the mark of a winner.

i will not call you names like the other fellow flo ri dah

but my father in law was a sports writer for many years covering georgia football
his next door neighbor was father of one of the most successful coaches for bear bryant
we knew personally tarkenton, rismiller, wilson, and certainly don leebern the athletic trustee of the bulldogs
how many times has my husbands co worker explained how he caught 5 passes from namath in the super bowl

the coaching of the bulldogs is not being aware of the change in college football
florida state scored 63 points on a ranked team this week
tennessee is a bad football team not ranked and something is really wrong

win or lose we support the players but the coaches are paid to use their brains

The Dawgs will take care of Mizzou…something like 48-21 sounds about right. Murray, Conley, Wooten, Lynch and Green will carry this team.

Angela,

You seemed to be a smart person unlike FLORIDIOT! He is just showing how small minded he
is……

Like you say, Angela, Tennessee is an unranked team….and the dawgs only beat them by 3,
they were a 10 1/2 point favor.

Dawgs season has a long way to go…..wonder how many dawgs will be barking at the end of the
year.

Angela and Dawn,

Ladies, FSU was not playing without their top 2 spectacular running backs and having to play 2 kids who rarely practice with the starters. FSU was not playing without their top 3 wide receivers and a 4th one also sitting on the bench. FSU was not missing their top 2 safeties. BESIDES, MARYLAND WAS AWEFUL AND ONLY RANKED BECAUSE THEY HAD BEATEN TERRIBLE TEAMS. By the way, I’m not implying FSU is not a good team, I’m just saying your sources obviously know a whole lot of famous people who still have a lot to learn about football!!!!

P.S. FSU played at home and UGa played on the road in a jammed (2nd largest) stadium in the Country, but let’s not confuse you with the facts. Also, I know all but one of the players Angela mentioned……and that means absolutely NOTHING. Having a 3rd cousin who had a neighbor who knew a guy who once spoke to a guy who knew a woman who dated a friend who had a relative who caught a pass from Joe Namath does not make your source an expert!!!

Bill give Murray all the credit you can. But don’t act like Richt knew what to do the whole time.
The man doesn’t do much coaching, he watches the game just like we do. Watch him on the sidelines when Ga scores a TD. He is the last to figure it out. It is not an isolated incident. He is pretty consistent. But go ahead and worship the man. I am sure on judgement day God will
give you an edge.

Buzz-off,

I know no one who got a pass from Joe Namath. So you were playing without some of your puppie
dawg starters. As bad as Tennessee is, even without these two starters, dawgs should have beat
Tennessee with no problem.
