No ‘jinx’ talk: Georgia doesn’t lose because of ‘GameDay’ or black jerseys

"GameDay" is returning to Athens. (ESPN)

"GameDay" is returning to Athens. (ESPN)

Some more random thoughts and observations from the North Texas game and looking ahead …

Another Top 10 matchup for the Dawgs has lured ESPN’s “College GameDay” back to Athens, meaning Georgia will be featured for the second time so far in this young season (they were also at Clemson).

While “GameDay” has been on hand for 14 games involving the Bulldogs over the years, this will be only the third visit to Athens. The last one was in 2008 for the “Blackout” game against Alabama, and the first was for the 1998 Tennessee game.

Before the fact that the Dawgs have won only three of their “GameDay” games launches too much “jinx” talk, let’s note that two of Georgia’s three wins where the show has been present took place in Tuscaloosa. And while it shouldn’t need saying, I’ll say it anyway: The Dawgs didn’t lose that 2008 game against Bama because of “GameDay” or black jerseys, just as they didn’t beat Bama in OT the previous year because of “GameDay.”

And at least the rest of the country will get another chance to see how lovely the campus surrounding Sanford Stadium is this time of year …

Big Yankee tight end Artie Lynch has become one of my favorite Bulldogs, and he had a great day Saturday, with four catches for 85 yards and a touchdown. I was particularly impressed by the way he dragged a defender over the goal line on his TD. …

I can’t quite fathom the reasoning in Mike Bobo trotting out a couple of trick plays that weren’t really needed — the swing pass to Rentavious Wooten, who then threw the ball downfield 42 yards to Lynch, and trotting out the old “rooskie” play (made famous by David Greene) where the QB hides the ball as he turns his back to the line, then suddenly passes downfield to a wide open receiver. Yes, LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis has been around long enough that he’s no doubt already aware Georgia has those plays, but giving Bayou Bengal defensive players a fresh reminder seems a little bit unwise. …

Amid the more serious problems facing Georgia in special teams play, the return of the not-quite-long-enough kickoffs Saturday might seem minor, though it probably was a factor in the 99-yard return for a score by North Texas. But the fact remains: If you put the ball into the end zone consistently, especially deep into the end zone, most teams nowadays aren’t going to bother to return the kick.

Marshall Morgan, returning from suspension, only got two touchbacks out of his seven kickoffs Saturday. Yes, he gets more height and hang time on his kicks than punter Collin Barber, who subbed for him in the first two games, but Barber’s line drives generally went deeper into the end zone and weren’t as likely to be returned. Mark Richt noted in his Sunday teleconference that Georgia previously had covered kicks well this season and “we just have to go back to doing what we’ve been doing.”

That should include putting Barber back on kickoffs. …

The UGA Athletic Association had a $2.2 million surplus in fiscal year 2013, the athletic board was told Friday, and I’ve got a suggestion where a few of those bucks need to be spent: replacing the embarrassingly bad technology at Sanford Stadium.

Saturday provided numerous examples of the current deficiencies: There were frequent sound dropouts (the worst resulting in the poor Battle Hymn soloist going unheard and even part of the Larry Munson pre-game spiel being missed); the audio level varied wildly from barely discernible to blasting you out of your seat; referee Penn Wagers announced at one point that the instant replay was not working (though that was fixed); and, finally, the game clock went out for the final few minutes of the game. UGA has a state-of-the-art video board coupled with two-bit sound and clock systems. An upgrade is badly needed. …

If, like me, you’re old enough to remember when Pat Dye and Fran Tarkenton played for Georgia, you probably got a bit wistful Saturday when, after Dye was inducted into the UGA Circle of Honor, the two old teammates got together on the field for the first time since the end of the 1960 season. A nice moment. …

Finally, I’m not so sure about the so-called entertainment value of Kevin Butler’s video board “What Would You Do?” segment, a sort of mild version of “Jackass” where he gets young Georgia fans to do outrageous things for a chance to go Between the Hedges. Saturday’s scarfing of handfuls of mayo and licking of aerosol cheese out of someone’s shoe by woofing fans wasn’t as disgusting as the previous installment where a fan licked the bottom of a shoe, but I think maybe the producers need to search for more creative (and less gross) ways to showcase the extreme side of Bulldog Nation devotion.

Sorry Bill, having a hard time getting past the thought that we almost became the 2nd ranked team to lose to he Mean Green from North Texas who were 1-44 vs ranked teams.

21-21 tie in the 3rd quarter.

A lot of stuff to fix from this game:
1- Murray turning the ball over
2- Gurley fumbling in his own red zone
3- Punt block
4- Ongoing unfixable nightmarish snap issues
on special teams (every game now)
5- Kick off return unit gave up a td
6- too many 3 and outs on offense at innoportune times,
like 1st driver in 3rd quarter, gotta put the game away
7- defense can’t stop ranked teams from rushing, scoring

Can all this be fixed in 7 days?

There is no jinx, but Aaron Murray does not play well in big games when the lights are the brightst.

Murray is 2-12 vs top 15 ranked teams, never won 2 in a row in 4 years.

One thing we all know for sure is Murray wins about 15% of these high profile games, and loses 85% over his 4 year career.

Guess we will finally know in 6 days the answer:

Did Mark Richt make the biggest mistake of his career picking Aaron Murray over Zach Mettenberger?

If Mettenberger wins, and Murray chokes again for the 11th out of 13 games vs top 15 teams, we’ll all know Rict made the biggest mistake of his career.

Tired of hearing people giving Cameron credit for Mett’s improvement.

Mett has played lights out his last 8 games, starting before Cameron was even his coach. Mett had a great game vs Bama in 2012 and got on a rolll after that.

Here’s the SEC formula for winning big games:
1- run first offnsive mentality
2- stop the run on defense
3- solid special teams
4- qb as game manager not playmaker

LSU scores above 90 in all the above.

Georgia scores 70, 10, 10, and 10.

That’s a 360 to 100 advantage to LSU.

As far as the jersey color goes, I think the coaching staff needs to develop a “rule” for then the team wears the black jerseys. They are just too dang good looking not to wear on occasion. Sort of like when the Braves play a Sunday day game, they will wear the red jerseys and white caps, why not come up with something similar for whey UGA wears the black?? For instance, any time we play an SEC game at home with a kickoff time later than 6pm, we are going to wear our black jerseys. One thing that I think the staff is concerned about are the allegations of trying to “manufacture emotion” and “resorting to gimmicks” by wearing the black jerseys. Get away from that by coming up with a pre-stated rule on wearing the BLACK! #bringblackback

Things to watch for in this game:
1- Murray has been sacked 2x more than Zach, Zach is much more mobile than still target Murray, look for LSU to sack Murray at least 5 times.
2- Murray turns the ball over 2x mor than Zach. Look for murray to turn the ball over 1-2x and Zach to just manage the game with no turnovers.
3- Look for LSU to pound the ball with run against the poor tackling of UGA
4- Look for LSU to score 7-14 pts on special teams and 7 on defense (we all remember the last time we played LSU)
5- Look for Mett to burn Langley for at least 3 td’s on double moves or off of play action like clemson did
6- Look for Murray to get picked on slants where guys jump routes, def lineman dropping back in zone coverage since Murray’s so short, lots of tipped passes dueto Murray’s lack of height, look for one of the worst performance of Murray’s career.

@Vaughn, so according to you, UGa has zero chance next sat. If I was as pessimistic as you, I’d just hang myself and get it over with. You are extremely good at your job I presume (doubt you are employed) I despise “fans” that bash on the very players they claim to pull for. A pathetic little boy you are and I pity you and your kind. Go cheer for Iran

Vaughn

I wouldn’t say zero chance, UGA does have Todd Gurley, so you just never know.

But going on Murray/Grantham era, odds are low, about a 15% chance UGA beats a top 15 team since 2010.

Why so low?
1- Murray looks for the deep ball too much and gets sacked 2x more than he should
2- Murray rarely throws to the outlet, is a very slow decision maker
3- UGA will not turn to their besy prove big game performer Gurley to win a big game, they’ll turn to perennial big game losing qb Murray
4- can’t tackle
5- can’t play special teams, don’t even have a special teams coach believe it or not

What was the score the last time Lsu PLAYED uga? 42-7 or something like that.

The run defenses are both pretty bad.

But LSU is much better in the other big three areas that win big games in the SEC:
1- run 1st mentality
2- solid special teams
3- qb as game manager

Zach has an 88 qbr where Murray’s in 84.

The qb with the best qbr in the game wins 85%.

Going with Zach in this one.

VAUGN-blah blah blah blah///

#1 Richt didn’t pick Murray over Mettenbubba – Mettenbubba’s actions got him kicked off of the team – he did it to himself – the Student Advisory Committee voted to dismiss Mettenbubba from UGA after he admitted to sexual assault. Richt had no recourse- so get your facts right

#2 Mettenbubba won’t “scramble” unless he is chased out of the pocket – runs a 4.9 40 which is equivalent to a 300 lb OG…. not exactly nimble on his feet

Consider Murray/Grantham’s record in the “Lost Years (2010-2013) in big games:

Richt said Murray would have won the job anyways over Mett. And as you know, Murray was photographed in possesion of alcohol while underage and went unpunished.

You know that you are intentionally insinuating Murray as guilty of an alcohol offense that didn’t happen. Mettenbubba pleaded guilty to sexual assault. Only an immoral person would consider that minor.

Some coaches would give a serial killer a scholarship if he could help him keep his job.
Both Saban and Less Miles are known to look the other way – especially Less Miles – when a player that he needs commits an offense- look at Sugar Badger saying he failed 27 drug tests and Less let him play…. don’t give me Mettenbubba did something minor – sexual assault is a minor offense. Also he had a fake I.D. and was drunk though he was under age.
