What’s your favorite of Aaron Murray’s 99 touchdown passes?

Aaron Murray prepares to throw a touchdown pass to Michael Bennett against Auburn in 2011.

Aaron Murray prepares to throw a touchdown pass to Michael Bennett against Auburn in 2011.

Aaron Murray was asked at Tuesday’s press gathering about what it feels like to be on the verge of becoming only the second-ever SEC quarterback to throw 100 touchdown passes.

Murray has 99 TD throws going into Saturday’s North Texas game. Florida’s Danny Wuerfel threw 114 during his time with the Gators, and chances are that’s another record Murray is going to take this season.

“It’s definitely been a successful three years and two games thus far,” the Bulldog quarterback said, “but hopefully there will be a lot more to come. That would be great.”

No. 11 remembers his first touchdown pass at UGA: a “little back-shoulder fade” to Kris Durham against Louisiana-Lafayette on Sept. 4, 2010. As he noted, “that was a while ago.”

Does he have a favorite among his 99 touchdown passes? “Not really,” he said, but then he came up with one anyway: “I had one to Orson Charles vs. Georgia Tech my freshman year. That was just a big game for us because we had to win to make it to a bowl game. I just remember rolling to the left and throwing it to him. He ran a little in route and broke it back out, so that was pretty sweet.”

Yes, it was. But when I thought back over Murray’s career to try to come up with my favorite of his TD strikes, that wasn’t one of the front runners.

I think my favorite is the clutch 45-yarder to Malcolm Mitchell in last season’s 17-9 win over Florida. True, Mitchell is due a lot of the credit on that play for his run after the catch, but the circumstances made it an even bigger play for Murray. After a horrible first half in which he threw three interceptions, the pressure was on the Georgia QB. And he showed he can indeed be a big-game quarterback with that toss to Mitchell.

Tied for a close second place in my Murray TD pantheon are the two fourth-down touchdown passes against the Gators in 2011 to Michael Bennett and Tavarres King. Both admittedly were great catches, but Murray put the ball exactly where it needed to be. My son said he might go with those two scores as his favorite because they were difficult passes and they broke the losing streak to Florida.

Another favorite is the 40-yard pass against Ole Miss last season when it was 3rd and 25 and Murray was forced out of the pocket and rolled out to his right and threw to King with 3 seconds left in the first half to put Georgia up 14-10. That’s a definite highlight reel play and maybe Murray’s most athletic touchdown pass.

Then there’s the beautiful play to Chris Conley against Nebraska in the bowl game, though that was a relatively short pass that Conley turned into an 87-yard score. Actually, most of the credit on that one must go to Mike Bobo for a terrific play call.

And while it was a memorable one, the TD pass to A.J. Green against Colorado in 2010 was really more a result of a one-handed circus catch by the receiver than an awesome throw by Murray.

On the other hand, while Bennett made a fantastic catch on the 27-yard scoring pass against Auburn in 2011, it was a perfect throw by Murray. Another classic.

And, most recently, even Murray bashers had to be impressed with the 85-yard scoring pass against South Carolina to Justin Scott-Wesley, where the quarterback rolled out under heavy pressure and found the speedster in another huge win that broke a three-game losing streak to an SEC East rival.

And that’s just scratching the surface. It’s like trying to pick a favorite win over Georgia Tech … there are so many to choose from!

Is your favorite Murray touchdown pass one of those? Or do you have special memories of one of the 89 others? Feel free to share your thoughts.

I bet this article stings a little for the Techeye (no pun intended).

My favorite of his career until last week was the long bomb to AJ against Auburn in 2010 that put us up by two scores early despite the fact we ended up losing. However, his throw to Gurley against SC scrambling a couple weeks ago is by far the best. Scrambled under pressure, directed a running back not a receiver, and put it on the money in the corner of the endzone in traffic. Amazing

Ncdawg…

UGA has resources and the talent to win at least 1 mnc every ten to 15 years! Richt has everything he needs at UGA to do so! Going 33 years without an mnc is unacceptable! No we will never be as great as Alabama is. But we can be better than what we are now….their is just to much talent in the state of georgia. Going without an mnc this long is unacceptable! The fans put a lot of money into UGA….going to the games and buying UGA merchandise!….traveling and etc! Yeah I do get disappointed when we lose….I probably take it a little bit harder than most fans…but everyone is different. Right now I truly believe we are the biggest underachievers in CFB….maybe Texas is bigger…I just don’t know.

UGa has the talent on offense to be a scoring machine like Oregon if Bobo would just open it up. Stop being so conservative and let those big guys loose. Too many times he gets a little lead and has to let up and then something happens to let the other team catch up. Aaron was just like Johnny Football when he came out of Plant High School but Bobo put the brakes on all that running around mainly because he had no back up qb. LSU game will be interesting, imagine where we’d be if CMR hadn’t tried to make an example of Mettenberger and he was still with us. He’s going to try to light us up.

You’re right……these kool- aid fans are fine with 10 win seasons and outback bowl births! They don’t expect anything more…as long as Richt is a good citizen and teaches these boys how to be men! Lol!
Im just damn sick and tired of losing to Lsu and Alabama every year!!! If we had Charlie strong….give the man 4 years and he would have us an mnc!

I agree…I mentioned in a post a while back….then when we get a lead we take the foot off the gas pedal! Murray proved this last game that he is the best when he is rolling out of the pocket! Lsu is going to beat us….simply because our coaching staff has missed out on the best o- lineman in the state and in the south west the last few years!

Flat tire, seriously. You are going to crawl up next to 35? that guy doesn’t know from day to day WHAT he thinks. Just because he copies and repeat a couple of your buzz terms……doesn’t really mean he is gold standard of fair minded opinion. Not even sure he actually is a Georgia fan half the time.

I’m a UGA fan all of time! I just refuse to praise our team….when we look like a big 12 team on defense. Richt and bobo made Murray into a statue….he could of been much more elusive the last 2 years…but oh no!

actually saying UGA is the biggest underachiever in CFB IS being a delusional fan. that implies that the program is entitled to win NT / has to screw up to not win one. everybody wants to win a NT, but only one team gets to each year. almost everybody ends the season disappointed… that’s just the life of a sports fan.

It had to be the screen pass where..wait a minute, it got batted down back in his face..So, it had to be the tunnel screen to the flanker where..wait, batted down too..

I guess it has to be the tough 6 yard hook to Mitchell..The one where Mitchell broke a tackle, changed directions, and took it to the house.. The ball had to come from somewhere..

Honestly, I can’t think of any of his that rank anywhere close to the one Stafford threw to Henderson in OT at Alabama..Nothing even comes close..Simply hasn’t had that ‘moment’……yet.

I didn’t say we had to win one every year! That’s impossible! One every 10-15 years…would be good enough….but we can’t even do that. Richt should have won 1 mnc by now! And that’s a fact!

bobo has been way too conservative in the past, but this season he seems to have loosened up. has gone for it on 4th down quite a few times already. the OL failed us in the Clemson game, but the gameplan was good. if Mitchell / Gurley didn’t get hurt we win that game no problem.

and bobo called an almost perfect game against SC. I don’t see anything you could criticize about that game plan. I think that win is big deal for Murray’s confidence; monkey is off his back. Gurley is the best RB in the country, and the emergence of Hicks is huge. I’m not saying we will win the title, but this team has a real chance. Just need the D to grow up, hopefully they can get coached up during the bye week.

Lay off of Coach Richt.

The members of the “Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry” are equally matched (54-54-8), and Auburn only wins a National Championship every 50 years. The only fair thing to do is to give Coach Richt another 20 years and see how it goes.

I would agree with the earlier poster who said Murray doesn’t have a signature moment yet. In my opinion some of his best games came in losses. I became a huge fan after the 2010 Auburn game. I thought he showed a lot of toughness. Then last year he had an outstanding game against a very good Bama defense.

It’s a shame this guy is probably going to leave school with all these records but no hardware. He deserves better.

Nah, can’t be a coaching problem of course. What a silly suggestion. We’ve got a QB that played out of his mind for 4 years but no championship. I think we can definitely blame that on the cards not falling our way.

Rolling out of the pocket is a reaction, a read, more so than its a “called play”. I don’t know that I would be giving Coach Bobo for “using it more”.

we GET IT. its not as good as you like. You entirely blame the coaches. It’s absolutely their jobs and we understand that. They understand that. we ALL understand that. But over and over and over and over???? good grief. we GET IT.

I just think that if Bobo would loosen things up and stop playing by the 1950s playbook then things would get exciting and the good recruits would be lining up to play for us. He’s afraid that if he makes a daring play and it fails then he looks stupid. I was amazed at the on-side kick against SC. I thought he must have been kidnapped.
