Picking the all-time greatest Georgia Bulldogs

David Greene gets my starting nod at quarterback on the all-time UGA team. (Associated Press)

The guys over at ESPN.com have been having some midsummer fun this week drafting all-time rosters for various SEC teams, with Mark Schlabach, David Ching and Josh Kendall doing the honors for the Georgia Bulldogs. You can even vote on which of them you think came up with the best team.

Using their basic template, I’ve come up with my own all-time UGA football team, with a few asterisks that I’ll explain below. I should note that at some positions there’s an embarrassment of riches to choose from, and on another day a few of these spots might be filled differently by me. But for today, here goes …

OFFENSE

QB: David Greene / Fran Tarkenton *

RB: Herschel Walker / Charley Trippi *

RB: Frank Sinkwich / Mack Strong *

WR: A.J. Green

WR: Hines Ward

TE: Randy McMichael

C: Ray Donaldson

OL: Matt Stinchcomb

OL: Royce Smith

OL: Eddie Weaver *

OL: Mike Wilson / Joel Parrish *

K: Kevin Butler

Champ Bailey is part of the stellar defensive secondary on my all-time Bulldogs team. (Associated Press)

Champ Bailey is part of the stellar defensive secondary on my all-time Bulldogs team. (Associated Press)

DEFENSE

DL: David Pollack

DL: Jimmy Payne / Freddie Gilbert *

DL: Bill Stanfill

DL: Bill Goldberg

LB: Jarvis Jones

LB: Randall Godfrey

LB: Mo Lewis

CB: Champ Bailey

S: Jake Scott

S: Terry Hoage

CB: Scott Woerner

P: Drew Butler

Now, to the asterisks. While I went with the winningest Georgia signal caller, Greenie, a classic drop-back pocket passer, as my starting quarterback, there’s a long history of QB tandems at UGA and in the SEC, so my alternate quarterback would be the ultimate scrambler, Fran the Man.

No. 34 was a lock at the one running back spot, but no one goes with just one back, so another UGA legend, Trippi, would trade carries with Herschel. And, really, nowadays a third tailback frequently shares the load, and so I’d have Garrison Hearst in the mix as well. I’m using the other RB spot for my fullback, and that’s what Sinkwich played most of his time in Athens, though he was also a tailback and the equivalent of a quarterback, passing frequently. If I wanted a true blocking fullback, I’d go with Strong.

Likewise, depth is the mantra on both the offensive and defensive lines, so I’d have both “Moonpie” and “Cowboy” in my OL rotation. And Payne and Gilbert on the DL. I have Gooooooooooldberg  in mind mainly as a nose guard. (I know Eddie Weaver was primarily a defensive lineman, but I believe he played some OL as well and since Schlabach used him as an OL, I went ahead and did the same with the Meat Cleaver.)

And how about my secondary? I don’t think many teams would want to try and throw against that bunch.

Mixing and matching UGA greats like this is fun, so feel free to offer your own versions of the all-time team. As for the ESPN guys, I voted for Schlabach’s team,

BEST GAME OF LAST SEASON?

ESPNU is celebrating the 25 best college football games of the 2012 season and wants your help picking the best game among the top five — all of which will air in their entirety on ESPNU July 27-28. The five games in the running are: Georgia vs. Alabama, Texas A&M at Alabama, Michigan vs. South Carolina, Stanford at Oregon and Alabama at LSU.

I think I know which game most of you will pick — the de facto national championship game, in which our favorite team came up five yards short.

I really don’t remember Eddie Weaver playing offense. I thought he was a defensive guard in Erk’s old split 60 defense.

Yea I can agree Im tired of reliving the past

The majority of this fan base is still stuck in the past hence why every pre-season we have the same ole UGA is playing for another championship this year garbage

Oh and if we are going to show Herschel highlights can we please show something other than the worn out Bill Bates run

I mean he had much better highlight runs than that one, that one has been way over played

Though, I notice that the two of you complaining about the past didn’t put up a more current roster of players for your all star team…all I see is a couple fair weather fans b*tch*ng! If you don’t love our past and fore see great things in our future, get off the freaking bus and go else where! We don’t need you!

I thought Eddie Weaver played some OL, though mostly he was a defensive lineman. ESPN’s Schlabach also listed him as an OL. Even if he was primarily a defensive lineman, I’d still take the Meat Cleaver on my OL!

The only chance we had of winning the mnc was if tree and Jarvis would of stayed! Plus if Shawn Williams were granted a 5th year eligibility

I would be so great full if ol Fran could come back and lead the team….he may could get the 40 in 12 seconds…it doesn’t matter though…the ghost of UGA’s past would lead us to the sugar bowl baby

Im not on the kool-aid bus so there is no need for me to get off

I loved what happened in the past but that was decades ago

A fan that thinks Great things are coming in the future when you continue to lose to top 15 teams aka the big games with some of the best talent in the nation needs to get off the kool-aid bus

10 wins is the future great thing and thats about it

I wonder if ctg could run the split 60.., even though it couldn’t stop Pitt and penn state from lighting us up in back to back sugar bowls! Maybe we can beg spurrier to let us score like we begged him last year for that garbage 7

I wonder if Bulldawg35 can even get off the couch…

Geez… there’s nothing wrong with reliving the past, especially when there are NO GAMES right now. We can worry about this season WHEN IT GETS HERE!!!!

And, yes, a true fan expects/wants an undefeated season every year. And it’s great to be a fan at a school where it is actually POSSIBLE, instead of a fan at, say, Eastern Michigan, for example. If I were a fan at Vandy, or Kentucky, or anywhere else, I would be doing the same thing.

I’m just sayin’…

Bulldawg35 – did you even look at the ESPNU poll? The SEC CG is winning the pick as the BEST game of 2012. Guess who one of the participants was? Yes, the Georgia Bulldogs. Who did they play? The eventual BCS Champion. Why was it a great game? Because two teams threw everything they had at one another and the result was the losing team coming up 5 yards short.
If the Bulldogs are not relevant then why would anybody care about the game?

Case closed.

Flat Tire – why don’t you a Bulldawg35 go share your gloomy futures together over a candlelit dinner. And after you’ve depressed each other enough you can seek help from the suicide prevention folks because that is the only place your deary, closed minded pessimism leads.

This is preseason and things like “all time greatest teams” and the like are how MANY if not MOST fans like to gear up for the season. Yeah, imagine that. They don’t sit around and choke on doom and gloom.

Why do you even come here? If we have no chance why even say anything? It’s because you and others like you are miserable people and like they say… “Misery loves company” Only sick people want to drag other people down into the depths of misery.
Go suffer alone..

Flat Tire – “Dreaming and wishing doesnt lead to great things” Please tell me that you don’t really think that? Please tell me that it’s a typo? Because if you really meant to write that you are the biggest idiot that ever lived! GOOG GOD!

EVERY innovation starts as dreaming and wishing…
Man saw birds fly and wondered why he couldn’t fly. He dreamed of being able to fly and eventually he made it happen.
Man saw the moon and wondered what it would be like to walk on it’s surface… he eventually made that happen.

You are sick… you are so negative that you can’t even realize that imagination IS dreams and wishes… imagination is the ability to take what IS and project it to be something different. Innovation is making it happen.

Seek help… you need it badly.

I am realistic… you are pessimistic… Flat Tire. Go look at the Hater’s article about some hack saying the Dawgs would win the SEC and lose to OSU in the BCS. Look at my comment. That is REALISM. Your constant negativity is not realistic at all. The whole freaking human race would have ended long ago if they followed your outlook. They’d have all committed suicide.
“Ah what’s the use… we should just die. The volcano destroyed are crops…oh woe upon us… lets just lay down and die. It’ll just erupt again if we rebuild…”

That is where you would have gone…see it… CHANGE it.

I covered UGA as a sports writer in the early 80s and Meat Cleaver never played offensive line. He was strictly a defensive guard/tackle in the split-60 defense run by Erk.

People have some seriously short memories on David Greene. I recall that he was a frequent target of criticism due to his mediocre (at best) arm and lack of big play ability. Now he’s the greatest in school history? Games of 150 yards passing and a 50% completion percentage were not at all uncommon for Greene. We usually won anyway because of the suffocating defense we had at the time.

I’m not hating on the guy. I just think its funny how now he’s an all-time great when half the fan base was calling for his backup to get more PT at the time.

Thanks.

It’s so sad….that our best qb in school history…Aaron Murray has to deal with a poor defense for 3 years and now a fourth year a coming! Our defense was suppose to be world beaters last year…but like always…our players look better on paper than out on the field!

dawgfan, i agree somewhat about Greene, but I have lived through a lot of UGA qb’s since I left there in 1960,and I have a hard time coming up with many so-called all time great ones. Some good ones to be sure, but the “Great” moniker doesn’t quite fit the majority of them. Andy Johnson was a good one, as was Jeff Pyburn, Stafford, etc., but none would be considered great on BK’s short list. Hard to argue with most all of BK’s list. Stanfill, Scott, Hogue, Woerner,et al were as good as they come in their day.

So why no reply to getting nuked on the dreaming and wishing gaff? Is it because you realize that a statement of that magnitude of ignorance pretty much shot any credibility you have?

Truth? Only as you see it through your filters… It goes back to the old “half full/half empty” arguement… you see the negative side of everything and telling it the way YOU see it is your version of truth.

I handle truth everyday… it’s gruesome enough without making it worse by slanting everything towards the negative.

dawgfan – face it in most people’s eyes it is about winning and Greene was the winningest QB in college football history for a few years. Stats don’t matter. Belue really didn’t do very much but because he did enough to win alot of games most fans remember him quite fondly.
IF and I mean IF, Murray wins a championship he will go down as the greatest. He will have the wins, the stats and the trophies at that point. But until then he will always be the “almost” guy.
