Jacksonville ‘jinx’ isn’t Georgia’s problem these days

For UGA fans, it’s sweet to have the Gators fretting about Jacksonville and the Florida coach being the one answering questions about the other team’s winning streak.

Asked by reporters this week about Georgia’s two consecutive wins in the series before a Gator Club appearance in Jacksonville, Will Muschamp puffed up his chest and boomed, “Well, it’s not going to be a long winning streak, I can assure you. We feel very comfortable.”

Maybe so. But despite the lazier media types still falling back on the old trope about Florida “owning” the series against Georgia, the days when Steve Spurrier’s version of the Gators did indeed routinely dominate the Bulldogs are increasingly lost in the mists of time. Over the past six games, the Georgia-Florida series is tied 3-3. And, of course, the Dogs have won the past two. That makes Mark Richt 4-8 overall against Florida.

The current even nature of the series with the Gators puts that rivalry on the road to getting more in line with the way things have run in the Richt era against Georgia’s other traditional rivals.

While his critics continue to carp about the troubles his teams have had against Top 10 opponents, there’s no denying that when it comes to Georgia’s main rivals, Richt has things nicely in hand.

Richt has an impressive 11-1 record against in-state rival Georgia Tech (the most one-sided 12-game stretch in the series’ history). The Bulldogs have won five of their past six meetings in the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry and overall Richt is 8-4 against Auburn. And he also owns an 8-4 record in the series with Tennessee, which only really turned into a rivalry after the two schools started playing every year.

The only series where Georgia needs to do some work is against South Carolina, which has only really started flirting with rival status in the eyes of Georgia fans since Spurrier landed in Columbia. Richt is 7-5 overall against the other USC, but the Gamecocks have won the past three and have joined the Dogs and Gators in the triumvirate atop the SEC East, supplanting the Vols. That hasn’t stopped Georgia from winning the East the past two years, however.

As for the series in Jacksonville, the “jinx” talk has been successfully put to rest. Unless, that is, you’re talking about Muschamp, who as a former Georgia player and now Florida coach is winless in six outings in that city.

Comfortable? Yeah, right.

Going to Jacksonville with a worse team than Florida on a given year, definitely proved to be bad luck in the game.

We’re in Muschamp’s head. What is he now, 0 for 6 in the Ga/Fla rivalry?

Floriduh has begun to look like UGA did in the past in this game….2012 Floriduh looked and played like 2002 UGA when they were unbeaten

Guys, we just BARELY beat Florida last year and it was close as could be the year before. We haven’t had a lopsided performance in UGA’s favor in quite some time, probably when Robert Edwards ran wild in ‘97 (I think). The jinx is FAR from over as we can’t seem to put the pedal to the metal against the lizards. I expect the same this year with Florida’s D going up against UGA’s O. But the reality is that Florida can’t score and we haven’t been able to stop the run. I’ll be nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs this year as well. Can’t wait for the season to start!

As a 2001 UGA grad I must say it has been a nice run during the Richt era against Auburn, Tech and Tenn. I agree that a NC or two are important and we haven’t done that and every school should be chasing that goal. Doesn’t change that to be able to own bragging rights consistently over those schools makes the off season so much more enjoyable.

Don’t kid yourself if you are a fan of any of the above mentioned schools that you wouldn’t trade that in a heartbeat. Funny how things change and now Florida is worried about the game in Jax and Georgia has been the team playing Dec 5th on CBS the last couple of years.

The turnover margin for the past two games is +4 for UGA. Florida has turned it over 8 times. You should be more concerned with what will happen if they stop turning the ball over.

You are wrong….we were moving the ball up and down the field on them….but Murray threw a couple of int’s in the red zone….that’s what caused the game to be that close. We have beaten them two years in a row….deal with it

Bob

in 2011 FL had 2 turnovers UGA had 1 and UGA won
in 2010 UGA had 4 turnovers to FL’s 1 and FL won by a last minute field goal

So your point doesn’t mean a hill of beans

So your point doesn’t mean a hill of beans

The Florida team in 2011 was probably the worst Florida team there will be in some time. They ranked 105th in total offense and had a .500 record. UGA beat them by 4 points. Last year, Florida was better but still not that great. Especially offensively. They turned the ball over a laughable 6 times. UGA beat them by 8. Are you not a little worried what might happen if Florida improves their team, finds some kind of decent offense, and stops turning the ball over every play?
