Dawgs’ 2013 recruiting class: Solid, but no superstars … yet (UPDATED)

Despite some disappointments, Mark Richt was all smiles Wednesday. (Associated Press)

When the King boys were young, there were two kinds of Christmas mornings.

There were what we called “bicycle” years, when the bounty delivered by Santa was dominated by a shiny new bicycle or some other major gift. And there were other years when there weren’t one or two spectacular gifts but instead we got a whole lot of things we wanted … and even a few we needed.

The years with a new bicycle might have been more exciting, but we never really thought we had a bad Christmas Day.

College football’s national signing day is a lot like that for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Some years the program is rewarded with a burst of national excitement generated by a highly ranked recruiting class topped off by couple of five-star players donning a UGA cap on national television.

And then there are years like this one, in which Mark Richt signed his largest class ever and filled just about all his program’s needs — what my Mom would have called “a very nice haul” — but didn’t get any five-star players and signed only two of the top 10 in-state recruits.

It wasn’t a “bicycle” year, in other words.

Yes, it was tough for Bulldogs fans to watch “SportsCenter” interrupted to show signing announcements by a string of top players, three from the state of Georgia — and none of whom signed with UGA.

Of course, running back Alvin Kamara going with Alabama was expected, and it wasn’t particularly surprising that defensive lineman Montravious Adams followed the man who recruited him for UGA, former defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner, to Auburn. But the loss of much-needed offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil, long considered a lock for the Dawgs, to the sudden, mysterious recruiting mojo of “the University of Ole Miss” (as Robert Nkemdiche called it) was particularly hurtful.

And most of the top talent in Georgia leaving the state — in what’s considered one of the most bountiful years of high school players in quite a while, perhaps the best ever — is disturbing.

Looking at the bigger picture, while the loss of Garner at the height of recruiting season no doubt discombobulated UGA’s efforts a bit this year, the puzzling lateness with which the Dogs have approached some top in-state prospects in recent years, last year’s drastic undersigning (with only 17 players), and the continued lack of emphasis on signing offensive linemen — only four out of 32 players??!! — can be laid at least in part at his feet (along with the relative underperformance of a highly regarded defensive line this past season). So Garner leaving might prove to be a case of one step back this year and two steps forward in the future, with coaches who are more active and on top of things on the local recruiting scene taking his place.

The recruitment of Tunsil also was the latest example of UGA going with the high-risk you’re-our-guy strategy of making one top recruit their entire focus at a position — putting all their eggs in one basket. It worked with Isaiah Crowell at tailback two years ago (though it didn’t pay off in the end when he got kicked out of school and the Dawgs were left sorely lacking in depth), but was an abject failure with Tunsil this year. Watching UGA’s coaches scramble to try to come up with a Plan B when it became obvious Tunsil was going elsewhere was embarrassing.

Still, Richt and company signed a solid, deep class that especially addressed needs at linebacker and in the secondary, even if it was lacking in some of that signing-day which-cap-will-he-pick-up-off-the-table drama that ESPN promotes — and which has skewed media (and fan) perception of the class as a whole. It might not be close to the No. 1 class in the country as Richt defiantly hailed it Wednesday (the various rankings average out to No. 11), but, as Georgia’s head coach noted, “We took care of business in the areas that we needed. We got the guys that are very, very talented and are excited about being here.”

And once they actually start playing games, some of these players could well end up outshining those given five stars by the recruiting services.

Besides, those overall class rankings can be deceptive. Two words: Dream. Team.

Yes, perhaps the case can be made that the attention lavished on signing day’s late deciders is warranted because they tend to be among the best players who are recruited the hardest. Still, the horse-race style coverage tends to overlook some top-quality players who commit early and don’t waver.

Todd Grantham refused to end speculation about his future at UGA. (Associated Press)

Todd Grantham refused to end speculation about his future at UGA. (Associated Press)

Finally, what to make of this whole Todd Grantham soap opera?

While perhaps before signing day Georgia’s defensive coordinator might have seen the speculation about a possible NFL job as somehow enhancing his standing in the eyes of prospective recruits, it’s been reported that rival coaches used it against the Dawgs.

If he stays, you wonder why he endangered the signing of Davin Bellamy, Georgia’s main signing day triumph, by equivocating rather than coming right out and putting an end to the rumors. And if he’s truly leaving, then you have to figure he was at the very least disingenuous with some of Georgia’s signees, if he didn’t outright mislead them.

Frankly, Grantham’s continued dancing around the issue and refusal to say yes or no on signing day makes him look like a bit of a jerk.

UPDATE: I’m off for a couple of days but I stilll have one eye on Athens and was pleased to see that Grantham is staying at UGA … for the time being. That doesn’t mean, however, that I’ve changed my mind about the awkward, unnecessarily distracting way he handled this latest flirtation with the NFL. I’m just hoping the lingering uncertainty over Grantham’s future plans doesn’t come back to bite the Dawgs in recruiting defensive players for next year.

First of all, good for Ole Miss. They say every dog has its day, and that dog hasn’t had its day since the 1970s.

As for UGA, this class is huge, good, and will make up the solid backbone of the team from 2015-2016. Wish we signed a few more o-lineman, but we are pretty much set on the line right now. Next year will be the year to stock up at those positions.

As for Grantham – let’s face it, college coaches are mercenaries available to the highest bidder. The schools (or NFL programs) that hire them aren’t loyal to them, so why should they be loyal? It’s business, not personal.

I want the kid that has all his life wanted to be a Georgia Bulldog. I want it in his blood. I want him left panting on the practice field just hoping for the chance to go in for a play. I want him to “live” for having the chance to play with “champions”. If there is the least bit of “should I sign here or there”, then son, you go play over there. All these boys want to be Bulldogs, and they are willing to bust their ass, and yours, to be one.

If Grantham leaves he leaves to get out of the headache of recruiting and who could blame him when you double the salary and not have to put up with kids playing one school against the other the last month before signing day. Yeah coach it’s looking good for y’all while telling four more schools the same thing. Who was the high star recruit yesterday that said it was a business decision. What purpose does it serve going unannounced to a school during the dead period when you can’t talk to a coach in person that you have visited multiple times. As dishonest as the world is today you will never make me believe some of these kids are not going to the highest bidder. And while coaches was the topic Saban said in Miami he wasn’t going anywhere. The very next day he was announced as Bama coach. It’s dog eat dog for coaches and kids.

Recruiting should be done on a need basis and not stars. Maybe a new coordinator will not be saddled with having to also be a position coach and Asst Head Coach as Garner was. As for Grantham, I think he came here as a career resume enhancement. He inherited a defensive disaster from Martinez and had to start from scratch. He will do what is best for himself.

If past is prolog many of the recruits rated 5 star will be busts. It hasn’t been just Georgia that has experienced that over the years.

There will also be many 2 and 3 star recruits who will become All Americans and first round draft picks.

Todd Grantham has been disingenuous, but in some ways he has been playing that game the only way he could. He is a good coach, but even if he returns next year he won’t be at Georgia long. If I were making $825,000 and a quality organization offered me $1,500,000 I would be gone too. And anybody else with any sense would be too.

Grantham’s D has been average. OK against mediocre teams and not so good against any decent offense – See Tennessee, see Alabama, etc. Way over hyped for his production. Frankly, now that Garner is gone we can change our tactics and actually call back recruits and actualy go after some in state talent

I agree with several posters that CTG can hit the road. And, it’s not because I think he has done a bad job or whatever else. This constant talk of him leaving for the NFL is tiring. Make no mistake that other schools use it against us. If he wants to be a DC again in the NFL, he should leave right now so we don’t have this BS to go through again next year. You can’t blame him for wanting the money. I blame him for being an obnoxious tease.

Will Friend was a BS hire. He had no real experience. Take a look at the salaries for the offensive assistants and compare it to the defense. I think Friends salary reflects what UGA thinks of him. I bet the OL coach at Bama makes a whole lot more. If Friend can’t recruit GA talent to play at the state Univeristy, he needs to hit the road, too. Seems to me he hasn’t done such a great job anyway. Due to a lack of depth, which can be blamed on poor recruiting, and his mediocre coaching, our line is for crap compared to other SEC schools. Look how they got schooled by SC.

I dont blame Grantham for wanting to go to the NFL and possibly make double his current salary

Though he will make more money in the long run at UGA cause he will have a lifetime contract at UGA due to Richt winning 9-10 ballgames every year and thats all the fanbase here cares for.

The issue is he is doing this once again right after he got a raise and extension; this just tells me he doesnt want to be at Georgia period and will leave at a moments notice so why are we allowing him to put the program in a bad set of circumstances

As a program we need to move on an find another up and coming d-coordinator

If we want to win a national championship next year, we can’t takes things lightly, I don’t care how good your offense is, you can’t win football games without decent D. Look at our SCHEDULE next year, we can’t be sleeping this off season, we have to have a defense to win football games, a lot of people critize Rodney Garner, but that’s why it hurts so badly that he left UGA. We needed Adams, too bad he’s going to 1 of our 3 most hated teams in college football (Auburn), our defense is REBUILDING next year, and it could only get worse if Grantham leaves. I don’t know what our coaching staff is thinking here but, it is what it is. I believe we have a great 2013 recruiting class though! GO DAWGS!

I remember when i played football and would have done anything for the chance to play for UGA. Now the Georgia boys are just followers, running out of state instead of staying home and building a championship team where they came from. If you don’t want to be a Georgia boy then hit the road bro.
There is nothing no one can say to persuade me to believe that if you really want to be a Dawg you will be a dawg. The recruiting nowadays has turned into a soap opera, following these kids around doing interviews that is the problem. Can’t sign unless espn is there or the local tv station. Remember how some of the old dawgs did it? no cameras, no fan fare, just that feeling that they wanted to be a dawg and they made the call to the coach.

Great article Bill we will be in year 2 before we get a true read on this class but I have to say I’m excited. We have 13 players that we thought were good enough to offer early and they were committed enough to work to enroll early. That gives us a great chance to get a number of them on the field and not just running around in circles this season. Think about a couple of years ago and we only got 17 total…Go Dogs !

Grantham may or may not be all he’ cracked up to be. Probably the latter. His talent laden defense laid an egg at the vey critical moments here it counted (ie entire second half against Alabama). He definitely didnt earn his $800K this past year.

The worst, though, is that his public flirting with multiple NFLteams is unforgivable. It hurt our recruiting efforts and indicates that we really cannot depend on him. He does not seem to be a loyal Dawg but instead a mercenary.

So I say do not renew his contract and spend what it takes to sign the best PROVEN DC in the country, not some assistant somewhere or a friend of the coach.

Then we may really be able to win some chAmpionships.

Funny how all the zombies are rationalizing how Richtl laid an egg on signing day. Can’t they hear that giant sucking sound?. All the best players chose to sign with Richt’s rivals rather than sign up for four years of Marjoe’s evangelical revival sermons and watch Budda on the sidelines sap the team’s energy during tough games.

Although it is truth that some HS players actually perform better than the number of recruiting stars may have indicated, the fact is that statistically speaking a recruit with 5 stars will perform better than 4 who will perform better than 3 etc.

So instead of spinning the bad news, a true Dawg’s energies are much better spent trying to figure out how to fix the problem and sign Georgia’s best talent.

My assessment tells me that we need to replace to replace Richt and his entire staff, replacing them with a more group of experienced, professional coaches…

I agree the jury is still out on CTG. I will be surprised if he gets the job in NO. I would sure like to hear what he tells Sean Payton as to why his D didn’t show up against SC or the second half against Bama. There is no doubt other schools use the “Grantham Package” against us. Clearly, he is only here until a better offer comes up. But, we all knew that when he was hired. If Olivadotti is so good, then promote him. I gotta tell you that if I could double my salary at a different job doing essentially the same thing, I would be gone in a minute. Folks can talk all day about Georgia pride and all that, but there isn’t a man or woman alive who wouldn’t jump at the opportunity to double your pay.

OK, here goes…I’m not black, and I damn sure ain’t got a prejudiced bone in my body, but I do have questions. What self-respecting parents of color, with a son or daughter athlete, not have severe miss-givings about allowing them to attend a state school that still plays Dixie and waves the Confederate flag at games?…Why is it that, seemingly only the black kids make such a big deal of the recruiting process, holding out til the last while taking every visit possible, then doing their ‘thing’ on national TV?…The last time an SEC school, seemingly out of nowhere, ‘ran the table’ with such an array of high–profile recruits, Trooper Taylor was scurrying around the Southeast with a big bag of money that, ultimately, resulted in a National Championship for one school and a huge cloud surrounding their program. Wonder if they have any regrets? Doubt it, but as I said, just asking.

The ‘younger’ Kiffin, who’s doin their thing at Ole Miss these days, has just been named ‘recruiter of the year’ or something like that. Bill, I agree with you regarding Grantham! I really fear that he will hurt UGA in the future should this situation happen again and I believe his name will no doubt pop with an NFL offer again if not perhaps a head coaching job somewhere. His letting a recruit know in advance of UGA or Coach Richt was definitely disingeneous of him. I think the other coaches in the SEC will use it again which will hurt UGA.

Who knows what Rodney Gardner was thinking in his recruiting Adams and others. The fact that he was late in recruiting several players may be that he was planning to move to Auburn if the opportunity arose and he would load his bag of recruits to take with him. No loyalty among some coaches either. The whole recruiting program is in disarray at UGA. Coach Richt and McGarity need to look at this.

The 2013 season will be interesting! It will be a tougher schedule! Having SC and LSU at home may help! Hopefully, some of these new pups can grow up fast to help make a difference! GO DAWGS!!

All I can say is I hope neither Marshall or Gurley go down with an injury. The other two we signed will not be ready to play any before the 6 TH game at best and both should probably be red shirted. McClendon should have done a better job getting one of the Alabama Commits to realize that Alabama has 11 starter at running back now and that the numbers just don’t add up for ANY playing time for about half of those starters. Georgia has two starters and maybe 5 more who are unproven. It would not have been much of an effort for Kamara or Henry to go into practice as the number three running back without even being on the field for the first time.

Grantham has done a great job turning our program into one who is competing for a Championship every year. 2009 and 2010 were disasters. We won 10 games in 2011 and should have won at least 12. Our field goal kicker lost two of the games and then makes the Pro bowl his first year in the Pro’s. In 2012 we won 12 game and finish 5Th in the polls which should have been 3RD . Ohio State shouldn’t count. They didn’t play a conference Championship game or a bowl game. And Notre Dame ending ahead of Georgia in the polls are a joke. Grantham was a huge part in Georgia become relevant in the SEC again. One day he will leave for a better job but until that day comes I think Georgia is better off with him than without him. Work in Highlands N.C. a very high end, second home community. Was telling a costumer of the news about Garner the morning it broke. He is a very wealthy Ga. Alum and was not aware of Garner leaving. He made a call to the school and confirmed the news. he said no one was crying ,and no attempt was made to keep him. I guess the rumors I had been hearing for some time, and what some of the recruits have said were true? Maybe we can recruit better moving forward. Happy with the class . when you get basically two classes of mostly top 40 recruits in one year its big, and very difficult to do, particularly with all the early enrollees. Tunsil is the only one I am disappointed in not getting. Saw Kamara play a couple of times, runs hard but not very allusive. If he doesn’t get bigger he’ll be busted up in no time, ala Crowell. Adams looks average against elite competition. Griffin must have some kind of issues for Ga. Not to offer. Will be surprised if Foster makes it at Bama. Everyone seems to think that you have to have 4 and 5 star recruits to win. If they are really good they play for 2 years and act like their hurt the third, then skip to the NFL. There is more than one way to skin a cat. If you have good coaching and develop players you can take 2 and 3 star players that don’t skip to the NFL, and after 4 or 5 years of experience whoop a bunch of 2 year, 5 star players all day long. I am not saying they shouldn’t be part of the mix. When I played ball we had a few great players but not many good players. We were 500 almost every year.
