Fan talk: Should UGA give Mark Richt a raise and Mark Fox another year?

Who will Mark Richt sign? And does he deserve a raise? (Associated Press)

Who will Mark Richt sign? And does he deserve a raise? (Associated Press)

The Bulldog Nation seems a bit preoccupied lately with trying to read the signs and smoke signals and determine who’s going where on college football’s national signing day this coming Wednesday.

It’s like an old-fashioned cliff-hanger: Will a “confused” Laremy Tunsil escape the evil clutches of Hugh Freeze and return safely to the fold in Athens? (And just what kind of Kool-Aid is Freeze serving in Oxford these days?) Can Mark Richt lure Alvin Kamara away from “Nicky Satan” and his deer-antler spray?

Compelling storylines, all. But I’m not and never have been a recruitnik. I just can’t get too enthused about constantly following and fretting over the whims and mood swings of a bunch of 18-year-olds who are prone to change their minds every day or so.

I prefer to wait until we know how Richt and his staff actually did. So drop by after we find out Wednesday who the Dogs have signed, and we’ll talk a bit of recruiting.

In the meantime, let’s dig into some Junkyard Mail. …

Paul Angle writes: Bill, I heard some talk on sports radio recently that Greg McGarity and the athletic board are likely to give Mark Richt a pay raise soon. I’ll grant you that the past two seasons have been a great improvement over the malaise that had enveloped Georgia football since 2008, but I’m just not convinced UGA should be rewarding a head coach who hasn’t won the conference since 2005 and still doesn’t have a BCS title. Especially considering that the 2012 season was probably Georgia’s best shot for a while at getting to the national championship game, and Richt still didn’t get it done. What do you think, does he deserve a raise?

Short answer: Yes. First, let me say that the compensation of college football coaches in general has gotten insanely out of proportion over the past decade, but that’s unfortunately the system we have right now. Last year, Richt was the fifth best-paid coach in the SEC and if he doesn’t get a raise this year he’ll slip down to sixth. The top three are, not surprisingly, Nick Saban, Les Miles and Steve Spurrier. But without a raise Richt also will trail newcomers Bret Bielema at Arkansas and Butch Jones at Tennessee and be just barely ahead of Missouri’s Gary Pinkel! Judged on the basis of what his team has achieved the past two years, winning the SEC East and coming a whisker away from a spot in the BCS national championship game, Richt certainly deserves to be on a par with Spurrier and ahead of the new guys. As for complaints about what Richt has managed to accomplish at UGA, I like how Chris Low of ESPN put it recently: “He was one tipped pass from playing for the national title this season. He’s been to the SEC championship game each of the past two years. So he’s obviously swimming in the right waters. To win championships, the breaks have to go your way. But you also have to get there, and Georgia has done that the past two years under Richt.”

Mark Fox needs to up his game in recruiting. (Associated Press)

Mark Fox needs to up his game in recruiting. (Associated Press)

Several letter writers have had Georgia’s troubled men’s basketball program on their minds. Steve Yearta is representative of them when he writes: Bill, Things only seem to be getting worse for the basketball Dogs. With the abundant basketball talent in this state I don’t see why Georgia can’t at least be competitive in the SEC year in and year out. Do you think that Greg McGarity will look to make a coaching change at the end of the season if, to borrow a phrase, there’s no “significant improvement”?

While three wins in the past four conference games and some winnable matches coming up in an off-year for the SEC have the season not looking quite as dire for Mark Fox’s team as it did a couple of weeks ago, there’s no denying UGA basketball isn’t very good right now. The problem isn’t that Fox doesn’t know how to coach basketball, but he hasn’t had much recruiting success since Trey Thompkins and Travis Leslie left early to join the pros. Because of injury problems, some players not developing as quickly as anticipated and recruiting whiffs, the Dogs right now are basically a one-man team: Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. He’s a top-flight talent and was a major signing for Fox. But he’s not enough. Overall, the Dogs don’t shoot well, can’t hold a lead and can’t consistently make free-throws. Even some of Georgia’s wins have been pretty ugly, but that’s not surprising considering how many young players are getting substantial minutes on the court. “These guys need time. I’ve got a freshman, sophomore and freshman on the perimeter,” Fox noted recently. Unfortunately, the UGA basketball fan base typically only turns out for a winner that’s tournament-worthy, so crowds at the Steg are looking kind of sparse these days. Still, I don’t think a coaching change is likely this year. Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity has said he feels “really good about what Mark’s doing” in terms of “not taking any shortcuts.” So I think Fox will get another season to try to get KCP some help on the court. As Fox said, “We need a guy that can finish plays. We need a good player.” Bottom line: Fox needs to find a way to get some recruiting juice in Athens.

Jim P. writes: Bill, I don’t know who this Jason Aldean guy is, but he better be a Bulldog fan to have the honor of first crack at a Sanford Stadium concert in history! Honestly, I have mixed thoughts about concerts there. To me and many others Sanford Stadium is sacred, hallowed ground. After all, football is a religion here in the South! Yet, I can’t believe we said no to [Bruce] Springsteen. I hope concerts in the future are reserved only for singers/bands of such a high scale and regard.

Sanford Stadium headliner Jason Aldean is a big Dawgs fan. (Associated Press)

Sanford Stadium headliner Jason Aldean is a big Dawgs fan. (Associated Press)

Aldean, one of the biggest stars in country music, is indeed a lifelong Georgia Bulldog fan. The Macon native’s first game in Athens was Clemson in 2002, for which he had a sideline pass. He told ESPN a while back: “It was like going to church. I didn’t think it was possible, but I became an even bigger fan after that. Experiencing the players running by you and petting Uga … it was surreal. It was spiritual.” By the way, UGA is in good company playing host to one of the stadium dates on Aldean’s Night Train tour. The others: Boston’s Fenway Park and Chicago’s Wrigley Field. As for future concerts, considering you’re talking acts that would need to sell at least 66,000 tickets, I don’t think anyone but a big name is likely to be considered for a show Between the Hedges.

Barry Clinton writes: Hi Bill. I was wondering what your take is on the planned four-team playoff. The BCS system is broken in my view and should be totally abandoned, but does this move toward a playoff really inprove on the flaws that clearly exist in the ranking mechanisms? For example, how in God’s name does Notre Dame still get a ranking of No.1 by one of the computer rankings? Talk about misrepresenting reality. Anyway, your take on this would be appreciated, and thanks again for the opportunities you provide through your blog.

Thanks, Barry. I think a four-team playoff will be an improvement over the BCS format but certainly won’t solve all the problems in determining a national champion or eliminate deserving teams getting left out. Generally, the thinking of college football gurus is that an eight-team playoff would be the best way to determine the final No. 1 team, but there’s not yet enough support for that. As for computer rankings, I’ve never been a fan of them and the recent case of the Colley Matrix, one of six computer systems used by the BCS, still ranking the Fighting Irish No. 1 even after they’d been demolished by Alabama in the BCS title game just showed how flawed they are.

Marie Doolittle writes: Bill, I really enjoy your Blawg and your devotion to the Dawgs. I’m also a lifelong Bulldogs fan and also a big fan of the SEC in general. I wasn’t crazy about the conference expanding to 14 teams and I’m still not sure Missouri is SEC-worthy, but it’s fun having Johnny Football in the conference. I’m not sure I want the conference to expand any further, though, and yet I keep reading that the Big 10 might make a move to trigger another round of conference expansions. If that happens and the SEC feels it must add schools, who would you like to see Mike Slive go after?

I’m with you, Marie, in that I really hope the SEC doesn’t grow beyond 14 teams any time soon. But if the dominoes start falling, the conference might not have a choice if it wants to stay competitive for TV money. As for who to go after, Florida State would be a marquee addition, but the Gators aren’t crazy about the idea and the general feeling is that if FSU bolts the ACC, they’re more likely to go to the Big 12. Virginia Tech is another program that would fit in well, especially in terms of football culture. But the scenario that I find most interesting would see the SEC going after North Carolina and Duke to bolster both its basketball and academic standing, in addition to adding the North Carolina, Virginia and District of Columbia TV markets. Virginia also would be a possibility. If the conference must expand, any of those schools would be good additions.

Steve Upshaw writes: Bill, Our fans are so very boring. Alabama, Auburn, Mizzou and most others acknowledge every first down. Bama yells “Roll Tide,” Vandy yells “First down Dores” after a first down. Missouri spells “MIZ-ZOU.” You get the point. We don’t acknowledge first downs at all. We need to do this by screaming “Go Dogs!” after each first down. Not doing/saying something is embarrassing.

Sounds like a pretty good idea to me, but something like that is only going to catch on if pretty much the entire student section takes it up. Maybe if someone involved with the cheerleading program reads your idea, they might give it a try.

That’s it for now. One last note: The 8th-ranked Gym Dogs return home at 4 p.m. Saturday to face their old nemesis, No. 5 Alabama, at Stegeman Coliseum. In addition to the meet itself, which should be a good one, it will be “alumni night,” with a celebration of past Gym Dog greats and the 1993 and 1998 national championship teams honored. Sounds like a fun way to spend a Saturday in Athens.

Go Dogs!

My answer to the raise is NO. Richt willingly entered into a 5-year contract, at a specific amount. He also received close to $500,000 in bonuses with winning the East, a bowl, and final ranking in Top 5. Richt probably could get another $1M for winning a BCS Title.

He agreed to that 5-year deal because he wanted the security of it. Stick to it for 3 or 4 years, then redo it. Not now. Not after 1 year. Imigine what a doofus we will think McGarity is, if he gives Richt a huge payraise, then we go 8-5 next year.

We went 12-2 with the 40th hardest schedule last season. No bad. But not great.

Let’s see what Richt does with probably the 5th or so most difficult schedule coming up before we go to worrying what other coaches are making.

I like your blog king. But we have bigger problems like recruiting. I can’t believe tunsil is going to ole miss….this is a tragedy. Foster going to auburn and dee liner sticking with Bama. Carl lawson committed to auburn and not budging at all. Alvin kamara probably will commit to Bama as well. Adams might go to auburn. The number one prospect in the whole nation Robert kimdeniche…how ever you spell his name. From our own beloved state never even considered us. How in the hell does this happen? What once looked like a number one class in the world is now in danger at finishing at best 15th in the nation is unacceptable. Their will be no 5 star recruits in this class. So I say no to anybody on the whole coaching staff getting a raise. They should be put on notice for this debacle once again at closing out a once promising class. Richt says Uga sells its self, that use to be the case but not anymore these coaches need to make these recruits feel wanted at the university

I am all for McGarity giving Richt more money for “support staff” as Bama likes to call it. Call it what you like, but it’s within the rules, and obviously pays huge dividends.

I’d like to see UGA go hire some assistants that are actually considered among the best in the country. Not talking about the OC and DC – I think they do well with what they have to work with – instead, S&C, and a few position coaches who are underperforming need to go, and be replaced by the very best, not promoted from within.

Sander ogletree just got booted off the team team for his 3rd drug offense….what the hell is going on now geez….that explains why we offered a 2 star commit and stole him from tech. He will never see the field…..@ joey you are a fool if you think Richt deserves a raise right now….if we win 11 games in 2013…then give him a raise. Because 2012 was his most talented team and easiest schedule in the Richt era and got blew out bu the rabid chickens 35-7. We should of won the mnc….

I am a Tech fan, and maybe I shouldn’t even be on this blog, but I would like to respectfully submit my opinions. I would say YES to both questions. I have to begrudgingly admit that both are outstanding programs. Richt deserves a lot of credit for righting the ship and making a serious run at the national title. As for Fox, despite losing to Tech, he is a great game day coach and his teams will make a good showing in the SEC this year and will contend for the SEC title next year. They are both really good, solid men , without any hint of scandal and UGA should keep them both for as long as they can.

They actually are Highly respected ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS as proven by their membership in the AAU. VANDY should be in the ACC and MIZZOU should be in the B1G.

They must have some real smart recruiters at Ole Miss. Recruiting N’s older bro was very smart and now looks like they’ll get younger bro Robert N the #1 player in the country. How GA misses the boat on all this in state talent going elsewhere leaves a lot to be desired w/CMR and his staff. GA rarely keeps the best players at home and rarely gets 5 stars to come from out of state. They get a few but most go elsewhere even when there seems to be log jams for playing time where they wait to play or eventually transfer. Its real hard to compete w/AL w/all the NC’s and coaching legends. Appears now MS will out recruit GA this year. If they ever get a good QB and one good RB I think they’ll contend for the SEC and maybe a NC in a few years. That’ll attract even better recriuts. As they say, there’s always next year.

Richt is already making a good salary, so no. Richt is happy in Athens and isn’t going to leave because he’s not getting as much money as other coaches. He’s not as obsessed with money as some of the other coaches. If anything, put incentives in his contract to reward him for reaching and also winning the SEC Championship and for BCS bowl game appearances.

Sorry if I’m not intimidated by Georgia playing early games against Clemson or LSU. They are both good teams that “could” beat us, but LSU is losing a ton off their defense and with their quarterback, I like our chances. I believe they also lost 4 of their top 5 defensive linemen. LSU’s offense is only good if they are getting a lot of yards on the ground. As for Clemson, I was happy to see them beat LSU because they have lost more close games the last few years than anyone I can think of. But I’m not sold on their defense. Plus, they played in the ACC.

South Carolina, on the other hand, I’m definitely worried about. They will be a very tough opponent again next season.

Bill AFTER Wednesday is not “recruiting” anymore.

On the pay raise. 3 points:

First. Anybody saying Richt doesn’t deserve a raise “untill he does this or that” may as well just he honest and admit what they are really saying is that “untill I get what I want”. IN term of running a college football program, the man does as well as all but about 3 guys in he entire nation. If those folks did as well as he does at thier job, you BET they would be demanding raises every year. And they probably get one.

Second. I doubt that money is really what motivates Richt, so I would think his discussions with McGarity are much more involved than $$$.

Third. Obviously UGA need to keep in mind where thier HC rank in term of compensation. As you point out, like it or not, this IS the system. We don’t need chase those school competing to see how can have THE highest paid, but we have to stay in line. (and 6th in the SEC ain’t in line, with our status)

As far as Richt’s raise, if he does not get his players in line, and put an”Elite”, (His words not mine), team on the field for 2013, then his seat will become very, very, warm again. I don’t care what that B.S Bleacher Report site says.

It is very obvious that since the NCAA is no longer willing to enforce rules, that some programs that may not have cheated before are doing whatever they want to get recruits. It is obvious that the NCAA is willing to let The University of Alabama do as it darn well pleases. I do not see how the NCAA’s pick and choose attitude on which programs to harass has not made it into the court system by now.

Yes to a raise for coach Richt for his record and if nothing else, for parity. He should not be making less than the newer coaches. I agree totally that, “…compensation of college football coaches in general has gotten insanely out of proportion…” LIke you said, it’s just the state of things and we have to pretty much play along with it. I agree with you “Fridawg”…You pay what the market demands. “Bulldawg35″, you’re delusional to insist on a #1 recruiting class as the criteria for keeping coach Richt. Perennial top 10 aint too shabby. “Sander ogletree”?

Yes for at least one more year for coach Fox. Hopefully his recruiting will get better.

The sparse crowds at the Steg for the BB Dawgs is pretty embarrassing when they’re on TV. A bigger point is that the team needs fan support. I don’t know the stats, but I’d bet we have one of the worst attendance records in the SEC.

BCS and Playoffs: I used to think the computers were the way to go; logical and unbiased. Now we see they just don’t work. Whomever is programming them has put in faulty parameters…or something. Add to that the national media’s love affair with ND. Everybody and his brother clamored for playoffs. The upcoming system is flawed also in that you have to ask, “Who picks the four teams?” If it was in place last year ND would have no doubt been included.

Steve Upshaw: I think a lot of fans are “boring” also when they leave in the middle of the fourth quarter; or earlier, regardless of the score. I think we are some of the worst in the SEC in that regard. Those people miss out on some good football much of the time; not to mention seeing some new faces getting to play and us seeing what they can or can’t do. That, and far too many fans filing in late; not in their seats at kickoff.

Expansion: I hate it even today that T A&M and Mizzou were added. It’s bad enough getting to Fayetteville, AR…or even Starkville. Just a lot of lip service about student athletes; it’s all about the money.

NO they shouldnt give Richt a raise! Once again Richt and his staff are losing out on a lot of blue chippers to other teams. Im sick and tired of losing to South Carolina and even now Dumbo Dabo at Clemson is out recruiting Richt in our own backyard. Our fans need to demand and expect better. Our kool Aid Drinkers like to point to our record this past year. Heck several teams in the ACC would have had the same record with UGA’s schedule this past year. The Score didnt reflect the SEC championship game either as Alabama completely dominated that game. Cant wait to see on wednesday afternoon when a bunch of old men will be milling around the Mehre Building with dumb looks on their faces trying to convince themselves that UGA had a great recruiting class. Bob, spew all you want to but, that game was close, score-wise and stat-wise. Bama’s biggest lead was 4 points. There were 4 lead changes in the 4 quarter alone. Only 100 total yards difference in offensive yards.

If you think 100 yards in offensive yards over an opponent, means a domination, hell, the Falcons DOMINATED the 49ers two weeks ago! 477-373! Falcons win!

My argument isn’t whether Richt deserves a raise or not.

I just bothers me that a new, 5-year contract was only signed 6 months ago, and already, McGarity is ready to toss it in the trash, apparently at least partially because, some SEC programs had to overpay some coaches to pry them away from their current employers.

Okay so, what if Right signs a new deal paying him more than the new coaches, then Bielema goes 12-1 with the Razorbacks this season and his boss throws more money at him.

Is it time to up Richt’s again?

First before blaming CMR and his coaches look at what Alabama and Auburn spend on recruiting. They spend twice what UGA spends but send less than half of what UGA football send s to the other athletic programs. This is where the big disparity is. Alabama and Aurburn both spend well over a million dollars on recruiting as opposed to UGA’s 640000.

No way he’s behind the raise issue.

I just wish if UGA is determined to spend more money, Richt and McGarity would hire better position coaches, and lots more “support staff,” or “analysts” like Saban has done at Bama. It’s within the rules and is certainly part of the obvious edge Bama has on everybody else.

The good news is that the last 2 year’s recruiting classes have left enough talent in the cupboard that the impact of this year’s class will not be felt until 2014-15. The bad news is that a dangerous precedent has been set this year with the losses of commits like Derek Henry and Tunsill; 5 stars who were committed and then left for what they considered greener pastures. And then there is the instate star question- how do let all of the top talent get away?

An intermediate term remedy to improve the faclities should be to add 10,000 seats to Sanford and construct a state of the art indoor practice facility with a weight room that exceeds Alabama’s.

In the next 3 years if there is not an SEC Championship trophy in Athens, then maybe it will be time to check out Charley Strong.

The dawgs landed some pretty good players but it is a disappointment not getting any of the states top players to stay home. There’s no doubt they would have made their mark at GA but what it says about recruiting at GA is that kids with their talent would rather go to a school w/NC’s or for reasons unknown if they land at AU or Ole Miss. I think GA’s past, can’t win the big one, etc, has a lot to do w/it. Who knows the reasons. Just have to hope the ones we got can either stop or score on the ones we lost. Good luck dawgs.
