Michael Ruffin writes: Hey Bill, How do you think [Aaron] Murray’s decision to stay at UGA affects the other quarterbacks on the team? I kind of figured [Hutson] Mason might be looking forward to being the starter for two years instead of one. And what about [Christian] LeMay and [Parker] Welch … and others coming in?
Murray returning was the best news Mark Richt could have gotten for the 2013 season. He’s a veteran leader on an explosive, prolific offense, and I think he showed in the Capital One Bowl that he’s turned the corner on stepping up in big games. Shrugging off the two early interceptions to have a record day passing was big for Murray’s future. Richt summed up the situation pretty well this week: “Hutson’s to the point where he certainly knows what to do. He’s ready for the next step, which is playing time. What that looks like I don’t know. But these other guys still have to learn and perfect and get to the point where they’re ready to go. Aaron is obviously the starting quarterback. He’s the guy right now; everybody knows that; there’s no question about that.” As for Mason, I’m sure he’s personally disappointed but deep down he’s got to know Murray as starter is best for the team. I expect we’ll see quite a bit more of Mason than we saw of the other backup QBs this season, though Richt has declined to commit to a David Greene-D.J. Shockley sort of rotation. As for the others, well, Welch is a former walk-on who is fine in mop-up duty. LeMay still hasn’t convinced me he’s ever going to compete for starter at quarterback. I think ultimately he might wind up switching positions, if he stays at UGA. Faton Bauta impressed a lot of folks with his work as scout team QB this year, and I think we might see him in the “Wild Dawg” in some red-zone situations. He’s another who could wind up being used in another position, possibly as a receiver. And I expect incoming freshman Brice Ramsey, who many have pegged as Georgia’s quarterback of the future, to redshirt this coming season while he learns the system.
David Hammock writes: Dear Bill, Once again at the Capital One Bowl game, the Georgia Bulldogs appeared to be undisciplined and out of control with numerous and uncessary personal fouls and once again the coaching staff and especially Coach Mark Richt seem totally unconcerned nor did they respond to such unacceptable actions. Once again the coaching staff lets such actions go unpunished or at least not addressed in a timely manner in stark contrast to the reactions of the Nebraska coaching staff. When, IF EVER, is Georgia coaching staff going to get the message and properly address such unacceptable behavior?
I’ll agree that Georgia’s seven penalties for 76 yards in the bowl is too many, but it wasn’t out of line with the way the 2012 season generally went, and at least a couple of those calls seemed bogus to me. For the season, the Dogs averaged 6.86 penalties per game, with the Ole Miss and Auburn games (in each of which they had only three) being the least-penalized and the Florida game, with a whopping 14 penalties for 132 yards, the most. In the two losses, they drew six (South Carolina) and seven (Alabama). Nationally, Georgia ranked 70th in penalties, which was better than LSU (86th) and Florida (112th), but far worse than Bama (seventh) and South Carolina (20th). Richt has acknowledged that he’s torn between wanting to reduce the number of flags drawn and not wanting to stifle his team’s aggressive style of play. “You don’t want to have a lot of penalties that can hurt you and can cause you to have to punt and let your opponent get in field goal range and make a field goal where they maybe wouldn’t have,” Richt said after the game with the Gators. But, he added, “I don’t want to lose intensity. You want intensity with discipline. I didn’t want to slow down anybody’s ability to keep their blood hot.” Overall, I think Georgia does draw too many penalties, but your characterization of the team as “undisciplined” is a bit strong. And let’s remember that quite a few of the flags drawn this season were false starts by a young offensive line.

Jason Rhodes writes: Hi Bill, “The sky is falling” tends to be the general take on the prospects for the Georgia D next year, but somehow I have a feeling we’ll be in for a pleasant surprise. It seems that Todd Granthams’s become something of a magnet for defensive talent out of high school, and I’m guessing that there will be some pretty incredible athletes on the defensive side of the ball for Georgia next year. Sure, they’ll be inexperienced, but if the offense lives up to its billing and puts up somewhere around 40 points a game, that should provide something of a cushion for the learning curve. How many “this guy will probably wind up in the NFL” type athletes should we expect to see on D next season? I’m hoping/expecting that your answer will be “quite a few.” Thanks for a great Blawg.
Georgia will be much more inexperienced on defense, having lost a dozen veteran players, but you’re right that the offense is likely to pick up the slack. Still, as Richt noted, “We’re not losing everybody. There are still some very good defensive players that will be sticking around and a lot of young ones that are waiting in the wings and have been working hard preparing for their moment.” And there do indeed appear to be quite a few defensive players who have great potential, most notably linebacker Jordan Jenkins, who many expect to pick up where Jarvis Jones left off as a pass rusher. In his freshman season, Jenkins finished the season with eight tackles for loss, five sacks and 22 QB hurries. The loss of Kwame Geathers at nose guard will hurt, but there’s some up and coming talent at that position, including Mike Thornton, Jonathan Taylor and Chris Mayes. Garrison Smith brings back a lot of experience at defensive end and it looks like Ray Drew is finally coming into his own at that position. Amarlo Herrera has a lot of experience at linebacker. And while the secondary will be inexperienced, with the exception of Damian Swann, Sheldon Dawson, Corey Moore and Josh Harvey-Clemons look very promising. “I think we’re going to be very athletic. I think we’re going to be a fast defense,” Richt said. “I think we’re going to have guys with the skill sets to go get it done, and then it’s just going to be a matter of how quickly can they begin to play championship-style defense. That’s going to be the big push.”
Jim P. writes: Bill, I saw the Lizards were publicly humiliated at the Sugar Bowl for lack of interest/attendance. Reminded me of an e-mail I sent to you (that you put in your blog) before the season started, about how embarrasing it was that UF resorted to advertising at AJC online to try to fill unsold season tickets. So it doesn’t surprise me their fickle fan base didn’t show up for a BCS bowl this year. Also, what will the visor coach at South Carolina complain about this year, now that UGA’s schedule gets incredibly tougher? And haven’t checked, but did the SEC schedule cycle get a little lighter for SC this year? If so, will the visor coach complain then? Not when he’s got the light schedule, and I guarantee Mark Richt won’t make a public spectacle when SC has it a little easier. And speaking of schedules, have you seen the cakewalk the Bamards should have next year? What a gift for the presumed preseason #1. That would have been a nice schedule for UGA when they were the preseason #1 in 2008. But like I said schedules are cyclical.
Yeah, the scheduling cycle has definitely turned for next season, with the Gamecocks facing Arkansas and Mississippi State out of the SEC West while Georgia picks up LSU in addition to permanent rival Auburn. It will be interesting to see what Steve Spurrier has to say about that considering all the whining he did this past season.

Rick Martin writes: With the recent news about UGA making the highest profit of all SEC schools don’t you think we should be getting more for our money? It would seem that with that much money that UGA should have an indoor practice field, a better basketball program, and perhaps a football national championship or two. Maybe some of that money should be spent on football analysts like Nick Saban has.
You’re referring to the recent report on the most profitable football programs in 2011-12, which saw Texas on top with a profit of $77.9 million, Michigan in second place with a profit of $61.6 million and UGA third, with a profit of $52.3 million, just ahead of Florida ($51.1 million), Alabama ($45.1 million), LSU ($44.8 million), Auburn ($43.8 million), Notre Dame ($43.2 million), Arkansas ($39.9 million) and Nebraska ($36.4 million). And you raise an interesting point. Alabama, for instance, had more gross revenue than Georgia ($82 million compared with $75 million) but made less of a profit because it spent more money on its program ($36.9 million compared with UGA’s $22.7 million). In fact, Alabama had the highest expenses of any program, and with another BCS trophy in Tuscaloosa it’s pretty clear they’ve gotten their money’s worth. I’m glad that UGA’s athletic leaders are obviously good money managers, but a good case could be made for reinvesting some more of that profit in the program, and, as you note, Saban’s use of “analysts” to supplement his NCAA-restricted coaching staff at Alabama is just one example of where some of that profit could be well spent.

Personal foul penalties should go down now that Shawn Williams is gone. But even with that said, he always provided the spark when the defense needed it. Richt never seemed to get upset over Shawn’s behavior and maybe that was because it elevated the intensity of the entire team.
And I may be wrong about Shawn having alot of penalties, but he sure could trash talk and show up a receiver if he won the play.

Well I guess one could say they keep the bench warm. Murray is starting to come into his own and it only took him 4 years. He can make all the throws, to our team and the defense. Now next year he comes back and once again we are left with another top QB to step in with only one year to play and almost no game experiance. I would say one of the weakness’ UGA has is management of the QBs.

I guess you can’t be disiplined and be aggressive, if I understand Richt right. Didn’t know BAMA wasn’t aggressive on D. SInce they were penalized way fewer times. But didn’t they have the best defense in the world? LOL!

One thing we NEED to do…and have needed to do many seasons before, as well…is to play up to our talent level and have the game solidly in hand by about halfway through the third quarter. It would be real good for our team if we could send our second-string QB in and let him run the offense all through the fourth quarter…without having to look over his shoulder and wonder if he’s going to be taken out if he makes a mistake. We needed to do that with D.J. Shockley…but we couldn’t, because we’d play DOWN to the level of our opponents and would have to play David Greene the whole game. We needed to do that with Joe Cox, but had to play Matthew Stafford all the time. And we need to let both Mason and LeMay have some serious playing time after the game is solidly in hand…but so far it looks like we continue to play down to the level of our less-talented opponents.

On The QB’s
1. Murray had another so-so year, I think he finished up playing well against Vandy & so-so against Nebraska, while playing pretty poorly agianst the big 3 Alabama, South Carolina and Florida. Not sure why he’s stull starting considering his lackluster performances in big games. Certainly beating a team like Nebraska that had 70 points score don them in their last game, wasn’t impressive.
2. Lemay continues to look great when we see him, like at G-Day, where he outperformed Murray for the 2nd straight year. Goinng by what I’ve seen, Lemay is better than Murray. But I expect him to either transfer or move to another position, because Richt’s convinced Lemay always beating Murray on G-Day is luck.
3. Mason is obviously better than Murray. The numbers don’t lie. Mason has a better pass effcieincy every game he and Murray have gone head to head. But for some reason, Richt continues to start Murray. Mason was even the Spring practice MVP, best practice on the team in 11′, and still didn’t win the starting job, so he’s beating Murray in practice also.
Richt’s fallen to the “QB continuity Myth”, give it to the guy with the most experience. Why he went with Joe Terishinski Jr over Matthew Stafford, and Joe Cox over LSU phenom Mettenberger (see his game against Bama–man, what a QB). Mason is better, but Richt is trusting experience will pay off, and it hasn’t.

@ monty – Well said. CMR did a great job this year, but his attitude towards penalties is concerning. Alabama is a prime example of a team playing intense, effective football while keeping its emotions in check. Not eliminating them, but preventing them from adversely affecting play. It is not coincidence they have one of the best defenses in the country every year with the fewest amount of penalties.

Drake: Who cares about G-Day?? LeMay was outperformed and surpassed on the depth chart by Parker Welch in the little playing time he got this year. Mason is solid, but experience DOES matter. Murray has earned his starting role with his performance ON the field. He is also a proven leader of the team.
Why would you want to bench the guy that is about to shatter all the SEC passing records?

Drake. You are a lunatic! Parker Welch has attempted 8 passes in his career. Christian Lemay has attempted 2 passes in his career. Hutson Mason has attempted 47 passes in his career with a 57% completion percentage. Murray has attempted 1,131 passes and completed 696 at a 62% completion percentage. Murray will rewrite the SEC record books after next season. I’m pretty sure your post was a joke but if not, please review the above stats and tell me if you really believe what you posted.

So much for objectivity, huh Bill? Call a spade a spade. Murray hasn’t shown much improvement since his first year as a starter. If you take away all of the games against sub-par competiton, his numbers are far from impressive. He sill makes far too many mistakes, particularly in pressure situations against top competition.
Calling the defense undisciplined is a fair descriptor. The talent the Dawgs started last year should have resulted in far better numbers against the run and pass, as well as in penalty yardage given up. Grantham has been the beneficiary of a soft schedule as well. Aside from the defensive performances against Florida, what has his play calling yielded against top competition to annoint him as a top-notch coordinator (ditto for Bobo)?
Let’s start looking at the body of work for this coaching staff since 2005, and evaluate what they’ve done without creatively carving out the record against ranked opponents, embarrassing no-show performances, and choke jobs in key games and critical moments on and off the field. Then and only then will we be able to have an objective discussion about the state of the program. Until then, these articles and the majority of comments clearly have the tone of writers who are blind loyalists who ignore the facts and numbers that back those facts.

If I look on ESPN for passing statistical leaders I see Murray $2. I don’t see Mettenberger listed. From what I remember he didn’t when the job because he molested a young lady in a bar not because he was better.

Fleming – filter out unranked opponents and assess Murray’s numbers. Next season will go a long way to shedding light on just what type of QB Murray really is, since he will finally have to play a stronger schedule. If he continues to crap the bed against ranked opponents and make bad decisions with the football, it could be a long year in Athens. I would have rather seen Murray holding a clip board and getting cut in the NFL pre-season and Mason getting a crack at the starting job for 2013.

I’m sure Mason realizes the extra year will help him on a number of levels. Another year older, bigger, stronger, but most importantly, another year for our young linemen to mature. I think we get stronger there next year and again in ‘14, depending on signees. A good line can make all the difference in the world. If Murray had Alabama’s line for the last couple of years, he would likely have been a first rounder imo. I wouldn’t give up on Lemay; he’s got potential. The D will be green, but very hungry. I think they will be a lot like our O line this year–a lot of improvement as the year progresses. Let’s hope they play well enough to win out in September.

When you consider the number of Alabama’s penalties compared to UGA, you must consider the built in bias for ‘Bama. Just because they didn’t get called, doesn’t mean they didn’t commit them. Look at the holding (takle to the ground) instances againt JJ in the SEC CG, and pass interferences not called. It helps when the SEC officials are based out of Birmingham!

Smoke another bowl Drake! If you are a real Dawgs fan and you know anything about football and the QB position then you are very happy to have AM as your QB for another season! HM is going to be a solid QB and his playing time that he gets in 13′ will prep him for the starting job in 14′ and trust me he knows that is the best thing for him. LeMay is a great athlete but he is struggling with grasping the play book and will either transfer or possibly move to receiver. And for the record Mettenberger can’t and will never be able to hold AM’s jock strap! To compare Mett to AM is a joke!!!

Going by what all Georgia fans have seen, you’d have to rank the Georgia Qb’s off what we’ve SEEN, not heard.
By what we’ve SEEN, espcially the Spring games, it’s clearly:
No 1 Hutson Mason
No 2 Christian Lemay
No 3 Aaron Murray/Parker Welch tied
I know all these bloggers say Hutson and the other Georgia QB don’t practice well, obviously, as Drake so brilliantly pointed out, Hutson Mason winning the Most Valuable Player over Spring practices this year disproves that theory and leads all to see that it’s likely true for Lemay as well.
Why does Mark Richt start Murray when Mason practices and performs better in games? That’s a deep question.

Thought Mettenberger continued to perform well when the lights were brightest against Alabama, kid put up big numbers against Bama’s top defense, they couldn’t defend him, completed almost every pass, LSU had the lead with a minute to go. Murray, folded when we needed him most down the stretch against Alabama, for those of ytou that have followed Murray’s career, none of that really surprised you, Murray’s not a good big game Qb, but boy, he plays out of this world against the teams like Florida Atlantic and New Mexico State..

The offense did well enough to win against Bama and Georgia would surely have won that one if they’d had an Erk Russell defense. The inability of the so-called great GA defense to stop or even slow down Bama’s running game was the deciding factor in that game.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Chip Towers, the annual awards for the Georgia Bulldogs’ spring practice have been handed out. According to Towers, the offensive MVPs were quarterbacks Aaron Murray and Hutson Mason. The offensive True Grit Award went to tight end Arthur Lynch. The MVPs on defense were outside linebacker Jarvis Jones and nose guard John Jenkins.

I firmly believe our D will be way better than what people are expecting. We have a lot of great fast athletes that are hungry to prove they can step up to the plate! Yes we are losing some great players but how well did they play as a unit in every game? I’m not sure why but in some games they were playing at 80% at best…
We won’t have that problem this year with a bunch of young hungry studs. It may take 2 to 3 games to get everybody on the same page but our O will be able to put up enough points to keep us in the game against Clemson and SC. By the time we get to LSU our D will be primed! Not even worried about our D at all, we will surprise a lot of people in 13′, believe that Dawg Nation!

Lemay will probably transfer. He is a gifted athlete but from all indications he just isn’t absorbing the playbook. Faton Bauta is a wild card. He is BIG and everyone compared him to Tebow. I just hope he can throw the ball better. I hope mason get more snaps so he can get game experience. I guess that depends on how the D gels.

The front heavy schedule and the number of suspensions in those games will determine the success or failure of the Dawgs next year. Needless suspensions during the first two to four games is the Georgia way. My concern about Richt is not that he lets his team’s “blood run hot” during games, it’s that he does nothing to cool them off during spring break and the summer.

It will be in the team’s best interest to play Mason as much as possible to get him ready for the 2014 season. Gurley will go to the NFL as will a few others leaving Mason and crew with a tough year ahead. Playing Mason more will probably keep Murray from breaking a few anticipated records, but that’s not what he’s there for. He needs to do all he can to help make sure Mason’s ready for the 2014 season.

Richt was on the sideline when Lemay rifled the ball to some wideout, and Richt said you could hear it whistle. Why the hell would Lemay’s brother commit to Georgia, if Lemay was going to transfer? Why would you move Chrisyian to wide out? That’s the position his brother plays!! You people are certifiable. No wonder it’s been 33 years! Damn.

Bobo is finally getting his due. He will be a Head ball coach I predict in a few years. He is definitely better than Grantham. I don’t understand our fans love affair with Grantham. We have not stopped the run in the three years he has been here. I’m still hoping though this will be the year he gets the defense to play up to their full potential!!!

This clown has played one, that’s one, athletic QB in 13 years, and that was with Richt’s ORDERS. His name was DJ Shockley and his lack of playing time effectively RUINED his NFL career. However, he did lead the DAWGS to their last SEC title. That was WAAAAY back in 2005. You were like 10 years old!. Don’t go near that program DeShaun.

Yeah, Murray really sucks – led the team to a top 5 ranking, arguably higher – won the SEC East for the 2nd year in a row, beat Florida yet again, beat Auburn yet again and owns Tech and is now poised to shatter every SEC passing record ever written down / the ONLY SEC QB to EVER pass for three thousand yards three consecutive years – he really stinks – I just hate it he’s coming back. Some of you guys are just pathetic. First it was “he’s never beat a ranked team” – then it was “he’s never beat a team thet ENDED UP ranked” – let’s see, Nebraska, Vandy, Florida…..now you are getting into, “If you take his record against teams with this and that…c’mon people – grow up – he’s a GREAT college QB – I don’t care if he ever plays pro – as far as UGA is concerned – he will go down as one of the best if not the best to EVER play not only at UGA but in the SEC. I read a comment made by Grantham saying that he will get to yell a lot this year! I agree that Grantham must stay in bounds (see choke sign), but Richt needs to turn him loose and let him coach these kids, and get them to a fever pitch in 2013. Richt made some noticeable comments in his press conference, one would think that he actually has a goal set higher than the SEC Eastern Division this time around. I have not seen this much fire in Richt’s comments since his early years in Athens. Makes me feel good in the off season for a change. Something tells me Grantham will come through, off the field troubles must stay at absolute minimum this year, and I think they will now that the rest of the known bad seeds are gone. Coach Richt does not seem concerned about the loss of Geathers, and looks like he is very optimistic about what he has to replace him with. I must admit I was pretty gloomy about 2013 after Bama loss, but now I am PUMPED. I know that Clemson beat LSU, but that program is on the down slide. Miles seat is going to get back close to the fire after 2013 season. Now Clemson will be a lot like the 2012 Carolina game because of the Death Valley crowd noise. The Dawgs are going to have to find a way to deal with it. I would not doubt that some of what Murray is looking forward to in his return is his opportunity to show up Mett in Athens, and he will. The Carolina game in Athens will be a lot more winnable. No more soft schedule noise in 2013. Many positives for this year.
People outside of the south are taking notice on the Dawgs. My wife and I were at a national sales convention in Atlanta this past week, and a couple of guys from up in the New York area noticed the Georgia “G” logo on her purse and began commenting on how close the Dawgs were to being the team in Miami whipping up on Notre Dame. Kind of surprised me, really.

Kind of sad about the backups. If Richt had a backbone, he would tell them up front there is a chance you may rarely see the field. It is his right to pick his guy, but he doesn’t need to misleed the backups.
If they want to transfer, let them go. We all know Richt will tell HS players they are going to start.

The ugly truth is that THIS was the year for Grantham to disprove my thesis, stated repeatedly on these forums, that Grantham was an overhyped horrid DC who was overmatched against every decent team which UGA faced.
Grantham had returning, experienced starters at every position most of whom had been under his system for at least three years. The RESULTS were simply a confirmation that Grantham is a disaster of a DC who was saved once again by Bobo and the offense. Grantham was embarrassed just as in the past three years by every decent offense team which UGA played.
It isn’t going to improve next season with inexperienced players at those positions backed up by incoming recruits, that is a pipe dream which leaves the season dependent entirely on whether Bobo’s offense can outscored opponents every week.

One thing’s sure, we won’t have to be adding Nick Marshall to the mix. In case you didn’t notice young Mr Marshall has ’signed’ with Auburn – go figure. Seems like nothing has truly changed over there. Several years back they hooked up with Cam after he had been kicked out of UF for, among other things, stealing stuff…and now they’ve decided to roll the dice again. At least this time the kid had to sit out more than one season…at least it seems like more than one…and, hopefully, has turned over a new leaf.

The time has passed to stop bashing Murray, Richt, and Bobo. Georgia had expectations this year but did anyone really think they’d be just one play short of a national title game appearance? I mean really?
LeMay is a bust (so far). Not to worry Hutson is great.
But Aaron Murray gives this team the best chance to exceed and excel next year. Be happy he’s coming back.

A good line makes mediocre backs incredible. They would make Gurley and Marshall unstoppable.
Murray with time is one of the best QB’s in the nation. With time Murray will compete for a Heisman.
Depth on the line should be and always be priority #1. I feel like this has always been Richt’s weakness. He goes big time talent first at the glamour spots, then fills the line.

I really don’t think the QB issues are any different at UGa compared to many other teams. Most colleges have at least 4-5 QBs battling for the starting position. AM is easily the best choice at UGa….so I’m happy for the DAWGS and Hutson will get his opportunities soon too. Go DAWGS!!!

IMHO—–If Coach Richt has any sense at all he will contact Nick Marshall and get him back on board at Georgia. He has the inside track with him and he paid his penalty for being stupid and there should be forgiveness now. The kid can flat out play multiple positions and is a star in the making.

Mason is out of luck imo, unless he is head and shoulders above the competition. He won’t get much playing time this year, other then in mop up duty. There is no reason to do a rotation like greene/shockley because mason doesn’t bring anything to the table that murray doesn’t bring, you rotate an athletic qb and pocket passer, not two pocket passers. If any of the backups are close to, or at the same level as mason, when murray leaves then the younger guy should start and begin gaining experience. However, Richt has shown in the past (joe cox, joeT) that he likes going with the older guys in this situation. DJ Shockley’s just don’t happen that often.
UGA needs to build a full length indoor practice facility. The money is there and the more stuff you have the more recruits want to come. Also, how many times did we read that UGA didn’t practice or cut practice short because of weather when they were preparing for the bowl game. What if that would’ve been a NC game? When the money is there, there is no excuse.

BAD ARGUMENT, BILL. I am glad Murray is returning, and he should be a Heisman candidate considering his accomplishments, potential, and stock of weapons surrounding him next year. Still, you are way off arguing that the Cap One Bowl game showed that Murray is over the hump. Way off!!! He threw a bad interception in the red zone, and he had an interception returned for a touchdown in the same game!! Some of his touchdowns were coverage breakdowns (think Conley 87 yarder), so it isn’t like Murray had an incredible game. Moreover, Nebraska gave up 70 points the game before us to an unimpressive Wisconsin team. Sure, they mostly ran their way to glory, but one way or another it’s clear Nebraska’s D is not juggernaut.
We should hope and pray that Murray avoids games like he had against Florida and South Carolina next year, but he’s had those games every year, so don’t count on it being fully eliminated. We just need Murray to have a couple mediocre rather than awful games next year so that we can overcome the problems.

Fellow Dawgs to be honest—- if the officials had been calling an even game in the SECCG then Georgia would have won by at least 2 touchdowns. The spotting of the ball was forward to the Bama ball carriers shoulders and about 3 or 4 times included some skips forward as well. They were spotting the ball back at the Georgia ball carriers knees the whole game. They called 2 penalties on Bama the whole game I spotted 10 flagrant holds that should have been called it goes on and on.
If Georgia’s O-Line continues to improve and IF some of those second and third stringers develop into solid back-ups Georgia will be a force to be reckoned with next year offensively. The defense I look to improve as the year goes along as I expect them to be hungrier and hopefully better coached along the defensive line. We have a very good nucleus of players returning on defense to be a very good team if the pieces fall into place and they can build some depth.

David Hammock was complaining about penalties. I expect a certain amount of penalties every game because the SEC is so aggressive. This is not a private school setting where football is second place to sports like cricket or soccer. Also in Bowl games the officials are from other Conferences who are stricter a lot of the times than SEC officials. In the SEC the official promote aggressive play because that is what happens in Pro ball. The reason a lot of the times rival games have so many penalties is because the officials could lose complete control of the over the top aggressive play if they didn’t call everything even if the offense is border line okay and if they call something on one team they will have to call it on the other team. After you throw out the motion penalties or miss alignment there usually isn’t that must left . I just think that anyone who complains about penalties at Georgia doesn’t really understand competitiveness in the SEC or football past the Pee Wee league.

As for penalties, it seems to me UGA gets a flag on the questionable calls while other teams do not. That was especially evident in the SECCCG when UGA had a ton of penalties, bama had 2, and their lineman were holding all the time. Also in that game when bama ran the ball in from the foot yard line, the center actually hiked the ball from the endzone, bama scored before the play even happened. I know I’m a homer, but I hope richt is sending in tape of the calls on UGA and missed calls on the other team. I still remember last year on a punt return our returner running off the field with his helmet turned sideways and there was on facemask call.

We will have something like 25 Offensive linemen going into the fall, and returning the entire 2 deep. How many MORE OL can he recruit right now?
Perhaps that was intended to be more of a general statement. Spend more time year in and year out. But it seem as if we have recruited the same or more number than anybody else, but quite a few have just plain not worked out. So if that was lack of attention, or evaluation, I would say, that the position coach would seem to be the guy that falls on, and Will Friend seems to be going in a very good direction for a couple of years now. So as a general statement, it seems a bit dated. Although the sentiment is true.

I don’t know if Georgia gets more bogus calls than anybody else. Maybe. I saw some questioble calls going against other teams, too. I DO know that we get a lot of Bugus calls, and as a fan of THE premier college football league, that is very very hard to accept. And oddly it’s not even the difficult calls, like holding on the line. HOW hard is it to determine a late hit out of bounds? Saw some blattently horrible calls this year.

I read and hear fans say coaches should report officiating calls/errors to the league office. I guess they do probably send tapes of what they find is awful or very questionable officiating. Do they send in tapes?
I do think the officals are graded somehow cause i remember penn wagers, and his team of ref’s, were the ref’s at every big sec game on tv whether it was the cbs or espn game of the week. but after 07 and 08 terrible calls against us- uga – he and his group were no longer in the big games. i see him and some of his team on much lesser games on lesser/smaller channels now.

i do agree the calling of the game in the seccg was way in favor of bama. i think i saw one or two holds not called against us/missed, but many not called against bama and an easy block in the back. oh well, not the end of the world.

Concerning the Clemson game; I suspect it might be a shootout. Our D will be getting its sea legs. The Offense really should blow Clemson’s defense off the field. LSU was not a very good offensive team. Clemson’s defense is vulnerable especially in the secondary and short range where Murray is very good. We will see, but I don’t Clemson as a big problem. I worry more about Carolina, even w/o Lattimore they are good running the ball–which we are terrible at stopping.
