The return of Aaron Murray is a big factor in the lofty projections for the 2013 Bulldogs. (Associated Press)
Georgia will open the 2013 football season amid a major rebuilding of its defensive unit while also facing a much more difficult schedule front-loaded with ranked opponents.
And yet that hasn’t dissuaded most of the college football observers previewing the 2013 Top 25 from seeing the Dogs picking up pretty much where they left off this season — a Top 10 or even a Top 5 team.
I think you can safely say that Aaron Murray’s decision to return for his senior season leading a prolific, veteran offense that boasts Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall at tailback has a lot to do with that.
Our own Mark Bradley pegged Georgia as No. 5 in his early Top 25. But, as he noted, with the Dogs opening at Clemson and then playing South Carolina and LSU in two of their next three games, they could either play themselves out of the To 25 by the end of September or mark themselves as the biggest threat to Alabama’s intended threepeat.
Bradley’s certainly not alone in pegging Mark Richt’s Bulldogs as a preseason Top 10 team. The highest ranking I’ve seen so far is at Nationalchamps.net, which has the Dogs a lofty No. 4.
Athlon Sports has Georgia at No. 5, behind Alabama, Ohio State, Oregon and Texas A&M (Johnny Football Fever!). Rounding out their Top 10: Stanford, Notre Dame, South Carolina, Clemson and Louisville, with the Gators at No. 11 and LSU at No. 12.
Athlon credits Murray’s decision to return, which they think means the Bulldogs will “narrowly edge Florida and South Carolina for the top spot in the SEC East.” While Athlon notes that “the defense is losing nearly everyone,” they believe “Murray will be one of the top quarterbacks in the SEC, and running back Todd Gurley should contend for All-America honors as a sophomore next year. Helping Murray’s cause is a receiving corps that returns Malcolm Mitchell, and an offensive line that brings back all five starters from 2012.”
ESPN’s Mark Schlabach pegs Georgia at No. 6, behind Alabama, Oregon, Stanford, Ohio State and Texas A&M.

Todd Gurley will be part of one of the nation's most explosive offenses. (Associated Press)
Schlabach notes that “UGA will have to rebuild much of its defense” and that “Georgia’s schedule is much more difficult in 2013″ but the key is that “The Bulldogs might have one of the most explosive offenses in the country in 2013, now that quarterback Aaron Murray has announced he’s returning for his senior season. UGA scored a school-record 529 points while going 11-2 in 2012, and receiver Tavarres King will be the only departed starter on offense. Murray completed 64.5 percent of his passes for 3,893 yards with 36 touchdowns and 10 interceptions this past season. Freshman running backs Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley combined to run for 2,144 yards with 25 touchdowns, and the Bulldogs will get back injured receiver Michael Bennett, who missed much of 2012 with torn knee ligaments.”
The Orlando Sentinel puts Georgia at No. 5, behind Alabama, Ohio State, Oregon and LSU. Says the Sentinel: “Georgia was five yards away from playing in the BCS national championship instead of Alabama and that memory will fuel the Bulldogs in 2013. Quarterback Aaron Murray’s decision to return for his senior season makes Georgia a favorite to repeat in the SEC East.”
USA Today isn’t quite as high on Georgia, though the Dogs still make the paper’s Top 10 at No. 7, behind Alabama, Ohio State, Stanford, Oregon, Florida and Florida State. They sum up the situation pretty well: “With Aaron Murray and the two young backs returning, Georgia’s offense should be the best in the SEC. However, with Jarvis Jones and others gone, Georgia has questions to address on defense.”
Are these projections pretty much on the mark or overly optimistic? It depends on whether Murray — and what should be a formidable offense — will be enough to carry the team over those early-season hurdles while Todd Grantham searches for answers on the defense.
What do you think?

I just can’t understand these Florida rankings. They’re not a bad team, but their offense is TERRIBLE, how can they keep getting ranked so high? Defense may win championships, but if you can’t SCORE, you can’t WIN…

My point is Georgia will challenge for the NC every year, that’s what major football schools do, at what point will you actaully contribute some real crystall to a league that wins it every year?

With KG leaving just about wipes out most of the starting Defense for the dawgs. Well, most folks thought after losing 3 starters on the OL from 2011 team that would be a problem but actually the OL performed better this season then last. Having Gurshall as RB’s helped ease the transition. Maybe the same will happen to the D w/all the new faces next season. Hope so. Having most of the Offense returning next season will help D immensely. Hope so, again.

since about 1968 or 1969 SC has hired three MNC football coaches and has YET to win the SEC East twice, even WITH STEVE.
YES! UGA lost three years in a row but in that era, UGA HAS WON the East twice and ended up AHEAD of SC at year end.
Case closed.SC is for now, a good BUT lower level Tier Two program. UGA is for now an upper level Tier Two program.
Spurrier will never again win the SEC, certainly not at SC.

Anyone who has followed Grantham’s recruiting for the last two years knows there are some seriously gifted defensive players waiting to step out on the field. Best of all, they will be eager to prove themselves rather than worried about avoiding an injury that could affect their draft prospects. It will likely be a better defense.

Mystery teams are UT, with a decent O line and QB.
Florida will not be Florida of 2012 and is a mystery team with tons of D leaving and too many unknowns on O at QB and running back.
MSU and Ole Miss and Vandy are also mystery teams, looking to break through and/or re build.
A&M, Alabama and UGA are the upper tier teams, barring spring injuries, or flunk outs or druggies.
LSU is a huge mystery with a crummy QB and tons of NFL defections on going and who knows with Les Miles.
SC is the lon dark horse to challenge UGA in the east.

Like I’ve said before, as long as Grantham tears out the page where he has only 2 down-linemen, 2 speed rushers on the end and his LB’s playing 6-7 yards deep, we should be okay. When we’re in that formation on D, we’re guaranteed to give up 7-8 yards a play! Just see the tape on the last 2 games.

Somehow, I believe the defense will improve as the year goes on. Grantham will have some good athletes to develop but needs to recruit some really big DAWGS to fill the holes. The defense was really suspect all year long. They gave up a lot of yards, certainly not in the class of Alabama where they need to be in order to win the conference championship. They must get by it before they can even get to the NC. Otherwise, back to Capital One or some other honorable mention bowl.
They need balance, strong defense and strong offense! Without both, it ain’t gonna happen in my opinion! We shouldn’t expect one to carry the other! If they can coach….great! But, they must recruit well and so far, they can’t seem to compete with Nick Sabin in that area!
There is room for a lot of improvement in the defense despite that they had Jarvis Jones and Alex Ogletree. Gave up way too many yards on the run. And, do forget, only Damian Swann is returning in the secondary, so a lot of development will have to take place there. It will be an interesting season! Can’t wait for the Spring to get here!! GO DAWGS!!

I think they are on the mark with one caveat: The secondary. I am not worried about the front seven, but other than Swann, that could be trouble. Sheldon Dawson should be good, but one of the freshman will probably need to step up as a nickel or boundary, and S could be a scary position (think how bad Rambo and Williams were in 2010, even though they obviously had the talent and were the best part of the team in 2011).
I’m hopeful that Harvey-Clemons can be one safety, but the other spot worries me. They are DGD, but I have a hard time seeing Norman, Deas, or a lot of others currently on our roster being big contributers on a NC-caliber team.
We have the backers, led by Jordan Jenkins, who should fill in for Jarvis nicely. We have a ton of raw talent on the line, and Garrison was playing all-American caliber by the end of the year at a position that usually does not make waves in the 3-4.
As far as the rankings, I think UF will take a small step back (losing their entire D and not nearly as deep as UGA) and will be a #15 type team until they get a line and a QB. LSU is going to take a (likely one year) LEAP backwards. That team showed no life this year and they lose every playmaker on Defense. They’ll reload quickly, but I don;t see them close to top 5 next year. In 2014, they’ll be back in the NC hunt with a rebuilt defense and a real QB (probably), but no way they are better next year than this year.

Pick up where they left off is probably realistic. The issue is obviously that we don’t know how soon the defense is going to regroup. But this is maybe the best offense we have ever seen as far as pure production. All they have to do is defend the other guys one point less than our guys. I think we have a realistic chance of having a defense capable of holding under 30.
And the “where” we left off, was a top 10 team that is still not named Alabama. But ending next year in the top 10 will be the first time we have done that back to back in over 30 yrs, so IF we merely pick up there, those of us old enough to have some perspective, think that’s not too shabby. We ,most probably lose 2 game. In the past 5 yrs only a dozen team in the SEC have not. Hopefully we get to play the team that IS named Alabama again, who accounts for half of those.

UGA is losing two WRs that will be in the NFL in 2013 – providing Marlon Brown recovers from his surgery in time. It would have been very interesting if UGA had Brown and Bennett available for Bummer – since they torched Bummer with 270 + yards through the air without them. Do not discount the loss of Brown and King next season. It will be a big loss. Unfortunately UGA starts the season with probably the most difficult starting schedule in the nation. Clemson, S.C. and LSU will all be in the top 10 at the beginning of the year.

So I believe it quite possible to BE a realist and still not be a bitter negative cry baby. Myself and others prove that every day in here.
As far as “getting hopes up”. I think grown men understand the nature of that, and most of us are confident in our own skin enough to always hope for the best from our football team, while not taking it too seriously if things don’t work out. Of cource most of us aren’t counting on a coach of a football team to carry our nutsaks for us, so we don’t fell the need to go all hyper-negative when he losses a GAME to prove how awesome we are.

Yea Richt will back his way into another SEC championship like he does and he will win another SEC campionship one day again but the constant trash talk is unbelievable and you know its true or we wouldnt get posts about 33 years and counting and Same ole UGA pre-season national champs from those other fanbases

Just to let you know, UGA has always been nothing but classy when we (other SEC schools) win National Championships! We really do appreciate the support of the UGA, Ole Miss, Miss State, South Carolina and Arknansas of the SEC! With out you guys using us, to brag to other people, our legendary status would not be at the alltime high it is now! Don’t worry guys, we (Fla, Bama, LSU and aug) will bring another NC home this year for all of us to enjoy! Keep up the good work and see next fall

Ah, and you are SO worried about them, that you feel its your duty are a Georgia Bulldog Fan to immediate squash ANY positive words from the rest of us, irrespective of how fair and truthfull it was?
Got it. That explains a lot. We all appreciate the sacrifice you are making to stamp out this blight on our fair kingdom.
The damn thing that you never actually seem to be talking to THEM.When ever somebody DOES say something liek we are better than every body else, not a peep. Instead you falsely accuse everybody else of being “those stupid fans”when we say nothing of the kind, to make your point. I guess I am just not getting how things work in the “world of reality.”

My advice would be to grow a little thincker skin and not worry about what you might read a rival troll put down in a sports blog. . You falling all over yourself to agree with them, or proactively downing your own team before they can, hardly makes you any bigger in thier eyes. Not sure how thats a win for you.

The Dawgs have some good athletes available on D for next year, and some fine help coming in. The Georgia D for lot’s of reasons did not perform well this past year. They had their moments, but stat wise, it was poor. Maybe these guys taking over will be better. Seems nowhere to go but up. Problem next year may be scoring to quick, for real.

what’s always funny is you immediately come to the defense of the coaching staff whenever they are questioned but never when a player is bashed on this blog
never talking to them you say; just like your posts to people like me
and I never said your name when accusing those fans; its those fans you always come to defend when I tell them the facts of the matter
squash positive words you say; LOL, I didnt know talking trash was called positive words

Do I trash talk?
Do I talk about presesason national championships every year?
Do I say we are better than Alabama?
Do I say Richt is a better college football coach than Saban?
In fact, have you ever once heard me say any of those things , ever?
Because according to your explaination, that’s exactly why you make a point to call ME out by name, whenever I make very factual comments that are ever modesty positive about my football team.

Yes, I do defend the players when I think it’s warrented. I have also let plenty of player critisism go, when I gree with it. AND when I hear non-factual comments about the coaches, I correct them. I give what I think is a factual reply, and am always open to be corrected if it’s not right.
So? what is wrong with that?

Coming from the guy who called me out years ago for saying Martinez was not a Div I level defensive coordinator; Isnt that right……. Smart Guy……………
And as for downing my team you dont have a clue
I want and know my team can be and should be winning titles with amount of money that UGA has and talent that comes from this state but its not going to happen until Richt takes the approach that Saban and the rest of the elite level coaches do and right now we are a long way as shown once again this year by not being able to win in big games

I believe the offense will pick up where it left off in 2013. The defense will have a tougher time, but should be able to hold their own. What has me excited is the incoming class. With a couple of more headliners this class could turn from great to epic! Throw in Kamara, Tunsil, Crowder, Foster, Adams, and Bellamy… call it done son and watch the rest of the SEC stand in amazement with gaping mouths and bulging eyes as these pups mature into National Championship Dawgs! Bottom line is this until RIcht decides he wants to win big and do what it takes to win big this program will continue to lose 2 or more ballgames a year and have an occassional big time win every 7 yrs or so
Its starts with bringing assts in who know how to coach instead of having friends hang around as coaches

UGA will return to reality in death valley Clemson on August 31. Clemson has circled this game for a long time and Chad Morris’s offense is gonna make clueless Todd Grantham even more clueless. UGA has no consistency when it comes to playing the real big boys. Yeah the dogs will pick up from where they left off as usual. Losing to Clemson(Boise 2 years ago) losing to South Carolina for the 4th straight time and to LSU. Run Defense is a complete joke.

Whenever people point out how miserable you seem in here (and plenty of folks have) you always answer by pointing out these other fans who talk too big. When in reality they have zero to do with what you say in here. That’s thier deal. Don’t sit here and pretend you think your are obligated to “offset” them.
You need to just own up to how negative you are all the time. It’s fine to be a negative person in general.. Just be honest, don’t blame everybody else.

The problem is that voters would still be keeping an early poll on a piece of paper in thier desk anyway. They would always be influenced by early expectations, even if they don’t declare it publically. They would still have a starting point. I don’t know if they would be willing to try to judge an entire month of games at one sitting.

Not surprised to see Flat Tire spewing his “Richt is everything that is bad about the Bulldogs” crap again. Oh well…
The key to how good the Dawgs will be is what happens in the first month of the season. The offense will have to carry the load while the young pups get their feet wet. I expect the Clemson game to be a very heavy barometer of what the season will be like. If the D is at least representative (there will be some mistakes for sure) then we may see a special season. No matter how you slice it we will have to win a shootout against Clemson. If the Offense is even 75% of what it can be then I think the season could be special. Having said that… our recruiting class plays a big part in all of this. We need bodies on the D line and if we can recruit a couple of guys that step up quickly (not immediately) then the defense could end up being better than anyone could expect.
All any of us can do is wait and see.

I believe that while UGA’s offense will have plenty of firepower, it will fall off slightly in 2013. Credit opposing defenses with watching plenty of game film of Murray & Company along with a tougher schedule. UGA’s defense will be the big surprise as I believe Todd Grantham will use this off-season to concentrate on how to adjust to stop the run better, and the LB’s & safeties will fill in surprisingly nicely. Kind like BAMA’s defense did this year when they had a lot of ‘name-brands’ leave but re-grouped to be maybe even a better unit as a whole. Isn’t it always a little different than expected??

Tide just got some bad news with Lacy, Milliner, and Fluker going Pro. Sure Bama will be good despite that but the depth that really makes the difference will be sorely weakened by these defections. Yeldon is a good back but Lacy is a beast… Milliner is Bama best corner, and Fluker is yet another O-lineman lost… those are serious losses. Now the guys behind Milliner and Fluker will be good but not as good as those guys… not for another season maybe 2.
The real question is whether or not A&M can stand the losses on their O-line. If they can block decently then A&M will give Bama a serious run for their money. LSU, IF they can get their offense out of the ditch, might make some noise as well.
The “the SEC will be down next year” crowd will start crowing now. If Bama isn’t up to standard those folks believe the SEC will not repeat. We shall see. There will be somebody that is better than expected. This year Florida and Texas A&M really rocked the boat. Florida needs to get an offense before they can improve any further. Who knows what we will get out of LSU. They have crap loads of talent but that offense just doesn’t get it done. The picture will be a little clearer after National Signing Day but not much.

It’s a shame that the AJC has committed blogicide by requiring posters to be registered. Apparently the idiot who made the decision failed to do their homework, or they would have known that other newspapers that have gone this route have suffered a 70%-90% loss in page hits, postings, and ultimately advertising revenue. Most posters value their right to be anonymous, and without that right, they’re out of here in a heartbeat.
Adios, we bid you a fond farewell. Last one out, please turn off the lights.

The biggest loss will be the true insiders who give very accurate updates on team activities and recruits. The assistants managers or graduate students or the family members of a player will not want to register.
We can’t have it both ways because of the haters and bloggers using half a dozen names or the idiots that pretend to be another blogger by using there blog name. These children and Georgia haters make it not worth monitoring the web site or making a comment about the topic a lot of the times when you can see that one of the psychotics has stayed of the site all day and is making every other entry or just talking to themselves. They ruin it for the serious bloggers especially concerning recruiting.
