SEC pride: Should Georgia fans pull for Alabama in the BCS?

sec-pinwheel-logojpg-2deded0ba172b404On this week’s “Bulldog Hotline” call-in show, an interesting discussion came up about whether Georgia fans should be playing the SEC pride card when it comes to the upcoming BCS national championship game.

Program host Neil “Hondo” Williamson was on the SEC bandwagon, noting he’s pulling for Bama to demolish the Irish and win a seventh straight BCS title for the Southeastern Conference.

However, a caller to the show pointed out that while Georgia doesn’t recruit against Notre Dame, it does go up against the Crimson Tide for quite a few players, especially the top-rated ones from our own region.

Another national championship for Alabama certainly won’t help with that. That crystal football trophy and those national championship rings tend to make a big impression on high school kids trying to decide where they want to play.

Indeed, this SEC pride thing can be tricky. A couple of years ago a lot of Georgia fans pulled against Auburn in the BCS game, not just because we didn’t want the Tigers to get a recruiting advantage, but because the manner in which they’d won the SEC, with their rent-a-QB and dirty play, left a lot of bad feelings.

But when it comes to Alabama, I’m not sure another national title is really going to make that much difference in terms of recruiting. This would be the Tide’s third BCS championship in the past four years so it’s not like they don’t already have that advantage.

Plus, Mark Richt’s Bulldogs impressed a lot of people nationally with their down-to-the-wire effort against the Tide in the SEC Championship, the most-watched college football game of the season, and if you’ve got to lose a game like that, it goes down a bit better to have done so to the eventual national champ.

And then there’s all the whining the Big 10 and PAC 12 folks have done about the SEC’s dominance. That’s music to the ears of many Southern football fans.

Of course, there’s another factor that has to figure into this: Bama’s BCS opponent.

Some Auburn fans will go to any extreme to oppose the Crimson Tide.

Some Auburn fans will go to any extreme to oppose the Crimson Tide.

It’s somewhat understandable that Auburn folks would be pulling for Notre Dame since they hate the Tide every moment of their existence (though I can’t believe AU fans actually would wear one of those WarIrish shirts someone is selling).

But it’s hard to see any true follower of the Red and Black ever pulling for the Fighting Irish, no matter who their opponent is or what the recruiting ramifications are. I even rooted for Steve Spurrier’s Gators when they played Notre Dame in a bowl back in the early ’90s!

What about you? Are you hoping Alabama brings the SEC another national title or would you like to see Nick Saban vanquished by destiny’s darlings, as ESPN touts them?

I have never been on the “root for the SEC in the Bowls” bandwagon. And I wouldn’t want FLA, BAMA, AU, or any SEC fans cheering for us. It’s fake and who cares that the SEC wins. Everyone already knows we are the best conference. I want my team to win and I especially don’t want our rivals to win and all SEC teams are our rivals.

Yes as a Dawg fan I will be pulling 100% for Bama to pound Notre Dame. Roll Tide.

I would also keep quiet about the Bama player who took the cheap shot on Murray so he can play against Notre Dame. His payback will come on the field one day anyway.

Generally you pull for the team you lost to unless you are in a division race. It sounds a lot better to say you lost to the eventual champion rather than the runner up.

As far as recruiting, I would be inclined to think this past weekend’s performance narrowed the gap in terms of recruits’ perception of the two programs. Having 4 first round draft picks isn’t going to hurt either.

i normally want the sec teams to win, but i think that alabama is destined to embarass the conference because they won’t be able to run the ball on nd like they did against us unless they are allowed to “hold” like the refs allowed against us. a true champion should be able to win without cheating, and most times a champion will have to defeat the officials along with the other team. i have witnessed most of the other sec teams pull against Georgia, tnn. and fla. in particular, so i really don’t feel much loyalty to conference schools anymore.

I’m pulling for the Irish, but that is only because my dad went to school there. UGA became my team after started classes in Athens, and I’ve been a as big a Georgia fan as there is for a long time now (graduated in ‘06). But I did grow up cheering on Notre Dame, and obviously my dad still follows them closely, so I do keep tabs on what is going on in South Bend.

If Bama was playing any other school, I would be hoping they win. But in this case, GO IRISH!

Yes, I will pull for the most over rated team in all of sports. The 1 with the 10 year 1 billion dollar T V contract, that should have lost to Standford on the bad T D call on 4th down, that played 3 overtimes against a 4-5 unranked Pittsburg and 3 other close games against nobody teams. Surely I won’t pull for the team that put up 350 yards rushing (a SEC Title game record), put a hit on a QB turned defender after the pick that still makes my heart pump crimson, and showed the world that 11 NFL worthy (what ever…HA) defenders, can’t stop BAMA when they tell them, hey, we are gonna run the ball the rest of the game, just try and stop us, with your 11 point advantage at home. So, yes I’m an idiot and I will pull for the Irish

Very interesting question. I rooted against Auburn and Florida when they played for the national championship but that is based on deep seated and long standing HATE for both teams. For whatever reason, most Dog fans don’t seem to feel the hate for Bama that they do for other schools and I think it goes back to gredging respect for the program back in the Bear Bryant days. I never really hated S. Carolina before Spurrier – had to admire thier fans for supporting what use to be a mediocre-at-best program which has now become an unquestionably mediocre program. Agree with you that the effecto on recruiting here is there even if Bam doesn’t win so I’m pulling for them. As much as people hate the Irish, didn’t they give us a National Championship trophy back in 81 when there was no such official trophy? Hard to hate that kind of sportsmanship.

If USA was playing a winner-take-all football game against Communist China (also wearers of “Bulldog Red”), with the winner getting the entire United States land mass, you know you would want Coach Saban and The University of Alabama Crimson Tide to represent our country in football and save America over Notre Dame or UGA.

The only thing we have in common is the support of the team on the field. I would suggest to try and not let the interweb warriors influence one’s total outlook on an entire fan base. It’s not even remotely close to being accurate. For the record, the Dawgs would have had my full support if Bama would have lost. Some of my best life long friends are Dawg fans and although I was thrilled with the win, I really felt their disappointment after the bitter loss. I got no personal joy from their disappointment. Cheering for a conference is what UGA fans and other underachieving programs have to resort to, because their team cannot stand on its own merits. I really hope that the “fans” calling into the Paul Finebaum show, other radio shows, many of the ones posting, etc. are not representative of the Alabama fan base as a whole. I’ve never heard such a spoiled, whiney bunch. I’ve heard one fan give Georgia credit, most seem angry that the game was close and claim the reason it was close is because the refs are blatantly against them. If Georgia had 30 more seconds on the clock they may have won the game and they would be going to the National Championship game. If Alabama beats Notre Dame then that makes the Close score with Georgia more relevant. If Alabama blows out or beat Notre Dame by more than 10 point then that proves how sorry the BCS rankings are and especially the computer part of those rankings that were so influential in getting Notre Dame and Florida where they ended in the BCS rankings.
I want Alabama to beat Notre Dame like a rented mule to prove just how good the 6 teams that ended in the top 10 of the BCS from the SEC really are.
As Herb said on ESPN Game Day , Divide the money any way you want but match up the best teams in the BCS not these stupid tie ends. I would love to see Oregon play one of the top ten SEC teams or Kansas State or Oklahoma. Make the Bowl game exciting again. Nobody anticipates a # 5 ranked team playing a # 16 but they would if the # 5 was playing a #7 team. The best match up is the Fiesta Bowl and the Championship game. The Capital One game would have been great if Nebraska hadn’t given up 70 points in the game with Wisconsin.

Personally, I want my team to face the best competition, in the toughest conference. If that means rooting for another SEC team, then so be it.

I’ve always pulled for the SEC in bowl season, with the exception of AU a few years ago. I believed they showed a lack of class throughout the season, and I was embarassed to be associated with them.

I have no ill will toward Alabama. They played a tough, hard fought game against UGA, and came out on top. They handled their victory with sportsmanship and dignity, and I’ll be rooting for them in the BCS.

I have even got new respect for Coach Saban. I have seen a different side of him as he was very congralutory of the Dawgs, and even went to bat for us publicly about the bowl situation. I respect him and their players and I really can’t stand Notre Dame.

However, the Bama fan base has changed. Listen to call-in shows sometime. There is not a more in your face, obnoxious, arrogant fansbase around right now. Not to mention how the radicals have now become the mainstream of their fanbase. Alabama won the game fair and square. We just fell five yds short and lost, bad calls against both sides,

It’s nice that the SEC has been dominant as a conference and in some ways that may work to our advantage in the polls; however, the issue of supporting any SEC team against anyone else is bogus. It will be interesting to see whether ND can hold it’s own against the Tide; but, I don’t care all that much who wins because I don’t like either one of them. Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity includes several pages of extremely complex mathematical equations that have an infinite number of mathematically possible solutions, although the majority of those solutions have no real world physical possibilities. An elite team of physicists and mathematicians have recently completed the analysis of 1,000,000,000 sets of solutions, and they’ve made some startling discoveries.

In the sports world, one of the solutions appears to allow the Georgia Bulldogs to win the SEC and the BCS championships with Mark Richt at the helm. However, the scientists caution that the possibility of this happening is approximately 1 in 182,942,892,048. If Richt is not there, the odds increase by a factor of 1,000,000,000.

Since no one has yet found a flaw in Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity, it would appear that Richt must go.

We compete against these teams every year- if not on the field, at least in positioning for bowls- and we compete against them EVERY DAY for recruits. I have never understood this SEC family bandwagon mentality. It is already proving to be extremely difficult for UGA to reach the level some of these other SEC teams are at now. Our Defensive coordinator once again gave up 30 points in game where we played a ranked team

Who didnt recruit the needed scholarship players last year

Who continues to not take penalities seriously bama had 2 we had 7

who continues to not take the special teams seriously with another key missed field goal

we still have fundamental issues with proper tackling and it showed in that game

we continue to not recruit top OL men

I will say Richt and Bobo had a good game plan for this one the only problem I had in the game I would have used the TE a lot more throughout the entire game and ran Marshall more than 2 times but the above issues must be addressed which i know he wont do

There are some Alabama fans on this board who make me glad I’m not rooting for them when I root for Alabama against Notre Dame. Oh, well, they probably live in single wides, have one tooth, and used to be married to their cousin.

Most of the Alabama fans I personally know are first class folks; to be fair, and to their credit, they live in Georgia (mostly) which gives them points, too.

I will admit to liking the Alabama program, and how they play football. That doesn’t mean I didn’t want us to beat the snot out of them. Since we didn’t, I will root for them in their title game. I would also root for any SEC team in the title game. I mean, come on, are you going to root for the ACC?

I might root for Notre Dame if they were playing…well, heck, I can’t right off think of…well, I wouldn’t root for Notre Dame unless they were playing the Taliban.

I don’t blame Alabama for the sometimes very bad officiating.

Georgia is 1-11 vs. top 10 teams since 2009. I will repeat this fact in every blog until next fall, because some dawg fans actually think we are actually close to a championship of any kind with Marky Mark Richt as “coach”. I can’t really call him a “coach” because he fails in every big game, and relies on pure talent against the weaklings of the conference. That’s why South Carolina steamrolled us this year, LSU last year. Then we have to barely squeek by the likes of Kentucky and Tennessee just to get in a spot to contend for a championship and what does Richt do? Lose to an Alabama team that arguably played their worst game of the year. Yes, the score was close, but Alabama threw an int on our 3 yard line, had a field goal attempt blocked and ran back for 7 points, and mismanged the clock at the end of the first half, making them settle for a field goal instead of a touchdown. That is 18 points left on the board right there at least. Why does anyone think we even had a chance anyway? Saban is a WINNER and RICHT is a LOSER. That is the difference, If we played this game 10 times (contrary to popular belief) Alabama would have won 9 of them, with Georgia’s win having to come in a game Alabama makes even more mistakes then this game (which is rare). I don’t think we would have beat Notre Dame anyway, they are coached by Chip Kelly…they play defense, they are disciplined, have power on both lines, and don’t commit turnovers often. Also, they are almost impossible to run against, so good luck winning a game with Aaron Murray airing it out against a good defense….LOL. Seriously, what about 1-11 vs. top 10 teams do y’all not understand? What is it about Richt winning 0 championships in the last 7 years do y’all not understand? Do you not care Richt gets 3 million a year to produce this horrendous track record?

Rabun dawg, have you ever considered that you don’t have to root for either of them? I’ll be damned if I’m going to root for a team who’s players were making fun of UGA this afternoon.
You can make all the excuses you want to make yourself feel better about being a no good traitor but that’s exactly what you are. It’s even more of a disgrace that a 40 year season ticket holder would so easily turn on his own school.
I don’t care who you are, if I walk into a bar and see a man, woman, or child wearing a UGA shirt and cheering for the enemy, I’ll slap that mozzarella stick right out of their mouth.

Snoop will definitely be rooting for the Crimson Tide to beat ND and keep the SEC streak alive.

It is not Alabama’s fault that the Dawgs lost and will be watching instead of playing.

The defense went AWOL inthe second half. To make it worse, the lousy time management by Bobo and Richt doomed the Dawgs. I hold no ill feelings over Alabama. It came down to the fact that Alabama has a superior coaching staff compared to UGA.

That is why the Bulldog Nation will be in Orlando rather than Miami…

I normally pull for the SEC team in the post season, and the reason why is as long as the SEC knocks-off other conference opponents, it makes OUR conference look better, stronger. This means that if you have 3 or 4 teams at the end of the season with 1 or 2 losses, the SEC team will hopefully get the nod for one of the top 2 spots. Bottom line, as long as NC’s keep being won by the SEC, it gives UGA an advantage in future BCS polling’s.

Season’s over, and all Dawgs I know want to know about next year. Murray probably enters draft, so now what? Does Richt stand by his promise to Mason for hanging around. If so, it’s a throw away year. Defense will take at least a year to absorb losses, so Richt should get Ramsey ready to compete for starting job in the spring. Ramsey set to enroll in January. If Mason starts in 2013, then 2014 rolls around and defense is ready but Ramsey is a rookie. This is a recipe for failure past 2013. Mark Richt must put the University of Georgia FIRST, and his playing favorites to individual players, well he should not be playing favorites. If Mason wins job on merit, fine. Problem is, he is not top tier SEC QB material. Mark Richt can not weather failure past 2013. Mark Richt is on a very short rope, I don’t care what McGarity says publicly, expectations are not easing up on Richt’s team, just because he is losing good players. Richt will be expected to compete for a title again in 2014, no matter what B.S. excuses he spreads between now and then. If he really wants to stay at Georgia, he should do what is in the best interest of the university. Ramsey is awesome already, have seen him play, and on ESPN’s Elite 11 comp. Ramsey already has the skills that it takes to be a top QB in SEC. If Richt does not do what is in the UGA program’s best interest, he will not survive this rebuilding.

I don’t know if I “should” pull for Alabama, but I will. Not because of any “SEC pride,” though.

I just can’t pull for Notre Dame because I have no emotional attachment to that university. It’s hundreds of miles away, I don’t know anyone who ever went there, I can’t remember the last game of theirs I watched, etc. Alabama, however, is right next door, I see their games all the time, and I know a lot of people who went there. To me, it just makes more sense to cheer for Alabama in my situation.

Good grief. Aside from he fact that there has never actualy BEEN a case of Richt putting favoritism of a single player in front of the good of the program, you have no idea who his “favorite” players even are.

Actually, from a football standpoint, it’s really pretty easy to figure that out. It’s who ever gives the team the best chance to win.

NCDawg

I for one actually think that we’ll still be pretty good next year. We have talent left on the defense, young, but top shelf nonetheless. The offense will lose TK and M.Brown to graduation and that is it.

NCDawg

According to many on these blogs and elsewhere, Mason is plenty good enough to take over if Murray goes Pro. He has been in the system 3 years and knows the offense. We could be a juggernaut on offense next year. The line and Gurshall will be better.

AltamahaDawg

December 6th, 2012

Mason is the one who was looking for options. The coaches didn’t go to him and ask him to redshirt in exchange for some promise of starting. It was the obvious best interest for eveybody. No promises needed to be made, It was a no brainer. But had he truly wanted to transfer, he would have been fully supported by the staff, and assisted in doing so.

I grew up with Alabama being my second favorite team. When they weren’t playing the Dawgs, I pulled for them. In my two visits to Tuscaloosa, they were some of the nicest fans I had ever been around.

I am gonn try to pull for Bama in this game because of things i mention above but it will be difficult given their fanbase.
