Just as I imagine it will take a while for Mark Richt’s Bulldogs to shake off the hurt from their close call with destiny Saturday night in the SEC Championship, the disappointment of the so-close loss to Alabama also is going to linger with the Bulldog Nation.

Talking to and hearing from fans Sunday, the overall mood was one of profound sadness over just how close this team came to playing for a national championship mixed with immense pride over the never-say-die effort the Dawgs gave in the Georgia Dome against the most elite of college football programs.

Only the most ignorant of so-called fans were expressing anger toward the coaches and players over the Bulldogs’ loss. More representative were those UGA students and fans who were on hand in Athens late Saturday night to greet the returning team buses with cheers, applause and chants of “It’s great to be a Georgia Bulldog!”

Such a classy display of support filled me with what the folks at Butts-Mehre like to call Bulldog Pride.

Zack Watson of the UGA Spike Squad shows how most of us felt after the loss to Alabama. (Curtis Compton / AJC)

Zack Watson of the UGA Spike Squad shows how most of us felt after the loss to Alabama. (Curtis Compton / AJC)

But now many of us just feel drained. Several fans said they found they actually felt worse about the loss Sunday, once the adrenalin generated by the exciting match had worn off, than they did immediately after the game ended. I know I woke up at 5:30 a.m. Sunday and couldn’t get back to sleep because the game and its many turning points and near misses kept replaying in my mind.

Fortunately, there was a bit of good news Sunday afternoon to buoy Bulldog spirits as the feared fall to a lesser bowl in the wake of the championship loss didn’t happen. The Dogs might not be getting the other BCS spot in the Sugar Bowl, as even Bama coach Nick Saban said they ought to, but Georgia got the next highest available spot in the Capital One.

Hopefully, the resilient support for the program will translate into UGA selling all its tickets to the Orlando game, because as was pointed out on the postgame show Saturday night on the Bulldog radio network, how well a fan base travels factors into future bowl selections. (Tickets are now on sale to the general public.)

Likewise, let’s hope the players — even those who stuck around for another year of college ball just to try for a shot at the BCS, didn’t make it, and soon will be departing Athens — are able to rededicate themselves to ending this season on a high note. Win the bowl game, do it in the same impressive fashion that they took the battle to the Crimson Tide, and they’ll be rewarded with a Top 5 finish and the designation of a great team that fell just short of winning it all.

The Dawgs didn’t achieve their season-long goal of making it to the BCS game in Miami or winning Richt’s third SEC title, but as I’ve said before, anyone who considers this season less than a rousing success already deserves a dose of cold, hard SEC reality such as has been experienced in recent years by the loyal followers of the Tennessee Vols.

As Sanders Commings said after Saturday’s loss, “Any time you win 11 games in the regular season and go play for the championship, and lose the way we did, it’s a good season.”

He added: “We’re sad but we can’t be disappointed.”

Let his attitude provide a model for fans as well.

The Bulldogs did not fail against Alabama. They gave it everything they had and nearly beat a team that was already stamped with greatness. To paraphrase the UGA players’ motto for the season, our team “ran out of time,” as Richt said Saturday. But we should have no regrets.

Brainlocked

lol

UGA has put more players in the NFL than any team in the SEC in over a decade and will do it again this year and yet every year we find a way to lose 2 or more ball games and have not won an SEC championship since 2005 much less even sniffed the National Title

A fluke you say; how is it a fluke when bama came out in the 2nd half making adjustments and running it down our throat and yet we couldnt stop them

or yet another key missed field goal that this coaching staff refuses to take special teams seriously
or yet we have 3 times more peanalties than bama cause this coaching thinks penalties are something not to worry about

Brainlocked ok whatever

Fluke because a tipped ball hit a receiver square in the chest and he reflexively caught it. That is the difference in the game. For all of Bama’s yardage they still damn near lost the game. Yes… brainlocked because in your world everything is about coaching… and sad news- IT IS NOT. Is it bad coaching that with the game on the line… bama could not run out the clock on UGA? Is it bad coaching that we shredded their almighty defense and minus a FLUKE play probably would have scored and won the game? NO… it can’t be bad coaching because it’s Saban. Jeez…

Monger – Even your beloved Oliver himself said he was a moron. And that makes you a double idiot for defending what he himself said was “awful, terrible, wretched, horrid judgment.” In fact, that’s pretty much the definition in the dictionary for Mongert: Awful. Terrible. Wretched. Horrid Judgment.

“Oliver, part of the “Chuck and Chernoff Show” on 680 the Fan, said he used “awful, terrible, wretched, horrid judgment” in posing such a question after Georgia’s emotional 32-28 loss to Alabama, a game many are calling the greatest SEC championship game ever.”

Now, you’ve really got nowhere to go. Georgia fans think you are slime and even your hero says that the behavior that you said was a stellar, shining example was awful, terrible, wretched, horrid judgment.

Only in dawg-nation can you pound your chests like you are owed or deserving of something without accomplishing anything. Didn’t win the SEC Chmapionship, didn’t make the NC Game, played a lousy season schedule that included: Buffalo, Florida Atlantic, Vandy, stomped by SC, almost choked against KY, Mississippi, Auburn and rounded out against Georgia Southern and a very down Ga Tech. Congrats on your accomplishments.

I’m not one bit a “Moral Victory” person. We lost. Period.

Having said that, there is no shame is being defeated by a hair in one of the best college football games anyone has ever seen, by a mighty foe, in a game which could have easily turned out the other way.

Every Alabama fan I know has told me they know how lucky their team was to win. Why? Because it is true. Both teams played tremendous football.

Have we had a great season? Not in my view. The season is not quite over. Should we manage to lose the upcoming game against the Nebraska team I would say our season is very much undermined. We need that victory to cement an excellent overall season. It’s possible that we may achieve what I’d call a nearly great season if we play lights out football and beat the tar out of Nebraska.

I’m all up for celebrating the accomplishments of this year’s team, but they still have something to prove first. Great and nearly great teams bounce back.

Go, Dawgs!

I suppported Murray’s decision to not spike the ball with 10 sec remaining. We had Bama confused and on-the-ropes near the goalline. Murray is a veteran and observed they were not set and played man coverage on Mitchell. Opportunity was there for a TD in the back corner but unfortunately the ball was tipped at the line and we will never know. I believe the pass would have either been a TD or incomplete pass out of bounds. Either way, Murray wanted a hurry up play with expectation for another play after with about 5 seconds left. I support our QB and our coaches. Just bad freakin luck, Again.

Georgia is a great team and had a great year. The haters are scared to death; they know it. The Dawgs weren’t just beating what is likely the best team in the country; we had them on the ropes. We had several opportunities to put it away and they kept making big plays. Any objective observer knows how well Georgia played and how close we were to being in the NCG vs ND. Richt and staff did a fantastic job. I wouldn’t trade him for anybody, and especially anybody we could hire. Gurley gained a whole lot more than what Alabama gives up to entire teams, on avg. He gained more than any other back facing Bama this year. Our line blocked the best D in the country surprisingly well, and the whole starting offense is back next year except for King and Brown. The offensive line gets the most improved award. Murray is obviously the big unknown. He had a good line last year, but they allowed tremendous pressure. If this line keeps getting better, and Murray returns, UGA should have its best O in history. D is going to need a lot of work, but we should be very strong again next year. If Ogeltree and Jones would come back, I would be at the BCSCG party in February. This fan is very proud of the coaching staff and players! So close to the prize, and that is tough to take. But the haters are absolutely wrong.

Ok dumbies, let’s hear your pitch to the ‘next coach’. What “great coach ” would come here?
I can hear his response now……” You mean the last guy won 10-12 games a year, won SEC Championships, and that wasn’t good enough? So I HAVE TO WIN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS or you will run me out of town? NO THANK YOU, I’ll go somewhere reasonable.”

I mean really people, the only coaches you would attract are upstarts with no real experience. That would set our program back about 10 years, or you can be patient and know that when we DO win under CMR, there will be no sanctions or probation.

Real: Excellent post. All of the people complaining should go be fans of teams that took their stupid advice of National Championship blowout win every year or nothing, like Tennessee. Oh scratch that. Most of the people on this site complaining ARE fans of other teams.

Any Dawg fan that wants to complain about the players or the coaches after this incredible run this season should do so directly face-to-face, man-to-man. Again, I’ll draft the waiver documents so that their estate can’t sue the school when what should happen at that meeting, does happen at that meeting.

Here is the letter I just sent Greg McGarity, who I believe relies on FACTS and reason, unlike you so called lunatic fans, that support and embrace LOSING the biggest games of the year EVERY year. IDIOTS. 3 friends also sent letters similar to this, but with a little different wording, as they are their own letters. Finally, we are uniting to get Richt out of town….Anyways here’s my letter to McGarity…

Hello Sir,

Mr. McGarity I have tremendous respect for yourself and the entire University of Georgia. I am a proud 2007 graduate, and a successful chef who contributes to the athletic association on an annual basis. I just want you to know that I have never been so ashamed by some of the so-called fans and alums of this University than I have since the loss to Alabama. I am at a loss for words as to why so many alums are proud of the loss, as well as the coaching staff. Correct me if I am wrong but how is giving up 520 yards of offense, including 350 rushing, something to be proud of. Especially, considering we have 9 NFL caliber players on our defense. I did not agree with extending Grantham and giving him a raise, and I still don’t. I just want you to realize FACTS about the program (that I know you know, but want to reinforce). Despite similar recruits, facilities, resources, and financial status, Nick Saban has only lost 5 games in the last 3 years, while Mark Richt has lost 13 games since 2010. The answer is clear as day…. Alabama is a well-coached, well-run, well-conditioned program with top notch atheletes striving to be their best. Georgia is under coached, under prepared, and can’t play with teams of similar stature in the SEC. It is evident by Mark Richt’s 1-11 record against teams that finished the season ranked since 2009. How can you justify paying 3 million a year for this ineptitude sir? I understand he is a good man with clean, Christian values, but are we not trying to win Championships. The nail in the coffin is the simple fact that Mark Richt has not delivered a Championship of ANY kind since 2005, 7 LONG years ago. How much longer do we have to wait sir? Despite top 10 recruiting classes every year, he fails to win A SINGLE big game (outside of the florida game, in which Georgia was given 6 turnovers to work with), and Alabama is yet another in a LONG list of failures in big games by this regime. I ask you humbly to please help the REAL supporters of UGA football, and bring us a staff that can not only compete every year, but win championships on at least a somewhat consistent basis. I was embarrassed of Mark Richt and the University at his childish outburst at the post SEC championship interview room, in which Richt stormed out of the room like a toddler have a temper tantrum, at a truthful evaluation from a reporter asking him about his meager record in meaningful games. I hope you evaluate THOROUGHLY the state of this coaching staff and the direction of this football program, which hasn’t won a championship in over 7 years, despite top 10 recruiting classes and millions of dollars from investors like myself being funneled into the athletic program. Thank you for listening, sir.

Sincerely,
Keith Thompson, Alum 2007

BTW, Richt didn’t storm out of the press conference after Oliver asked his question (for which Oliver has since apologized). I actually watched the press conference (which you apparently did not). Richt waited until there were no further questions. The moderator/host asked “Any further questions?” There were no further questions and so CMR got up and left. Now, he did come back in and defend his quarterback and his coaches which is what anybody with any sense would want their head coach to do. But it is a bald-faced lie to say that Richt stormed out of the press conference when Oliver asked his question. When there are no further questions at a press conference it IS customary for the coach to get up and leave.

P.S. I can’t claim original credit to the letterhead joke. I read that it originated with the owner of the Cleveland Browns when they lost a championship game against the New York Giants.

P.P.S. I don’t think I would take a National Championship if it meant that my team would have to go without a win in the conference two years later and a serious NCAA investigation and be bad for a long, long time (which looks like is going to happen to Auburn). Reasonable minds can differ about that but I don’t think that’s a good trade off. If a National Championship is that important, just jump on the bandwagon of whoever looks like they are going to win the National Championship each year you’ll always be happy. Yeah, yeah, yeah Bama fans, I know you’re going to say “or you could just say Roll Tide.”

P.P.P.S. Isn’t it a sad comment on the Georgia so-called fans when the Bama fans seem to be the reasonable ones?

WISHINGAWAY

December 5th, 2012
7:14 am

I have been wondering what has been going on the past 12 years or so with everyone abandoning the UGA in favor of other programs, and I include my own family members in this (lifelong UGA supporters). Everyone jumped ship to Auburn, Florida, LSU, and certainly Alabama. I used to see nothing but black and red on the vehicles, now all I see is crimson and white. I used to get mad at these people for abandoning their program they spent most of their lives supporting. But I must admit I now seem to understand why, as I contemplate the same. Richt had a couple of good years right off the bat (this was with Donnan’s players). Donnan never got any support and was booted out before he could solidify the program. Richt has done very little with the program unless you consider the continual crap he puts out year after year. Just enough to keep him cozy with the AD and Chancellor, but never enough to get the JOB DONE! This is why we are where we are. Everyone calls the SEC CG game a victory! EXCUSE ME! More of a national display of incompetence on the part of the coaches and their staff. I believe the players did all they could with the meager coaching and training they receive. There is a reason over the years that fans jump ship, such as old Detroit fans jumping to Green Bay, or Cincinnati jumping to Pittsburgh, or Vanderbilt jumping to Florida. People eventually get tired of supporting losers and being laughed at year in and year out. It may takes years, but eventually they all get to that point (and don’t say they don’t). Some of you sound as if the School was a child and you would run in front of a running bus for it. Sorry, won’t buy that one either, and you know it. If just playing the game was the point then there would be no keeping score, no keeping of statistics, no records, no playoffs, and certainly no championships. No, it is more than playing the game, as Herm Edwards would say “You play to win the game”! Georgia had a year where they stomped every shoddy team available, but lost (and almost lost) to SC, Florida, and Alabama. Fortunately we did not have to play LSU, Alabama, or Texas A&M, or we would not have been at the SEC CG anyway. And everyone wonders why the entire Nation picked Alabama, because they know that Georgia does not have the pedigree to win. The SEC CG was a debacle from the start. All I heard all year was the NFL caliber players we had, how our Thunder and Lighting, (GURSHALL) were going to rip teams apart, how our coaching staff had made strides on both sides of the ball. They made no such strides. 350 YARDS RUSHING? And lets not speak of the person they call a QB. And the last 30 second effort will forever be etched in my mind as the most idiotic football playing I have ever witnessed. So do I continue to endure this, or do as thousands (maybe millions of others have done) and jump ship. That means starting all over reinvesting myself again. And I just don’t think it’s in me to support Alabama or a Florida, it would be like french kissing my sister (i just couldn’t do it). But then again do I continue to put myself through a nightmare year after year knowing that things will never change, surely as long as Richt and Bozo are in charge? Food for thought, food for thought. The game was sad, the outcome sadder, and our future even sadder than that. All I can say is what a waste, what a waste. So long…………

ok, that was cathartic. good to get that out of your system. I don’t agree with people who say that alcohol is the mirror to the soul or that one finally reveals the truth of what they think when they are really mad. I think that people say things that they don’t really mean when they are drunk, mad or drunk and mad. So, you are forgiven.

But if you really meant it in the cold, sober light of day, then I think you are probably right. Everybody (you, the team, everybody) will probably be happier if you just move on and find somewhere that you are happy.

Best of luck and good fortune to whoever you support in the future.

Good year to build from. Things I would like to see out of a “Richt” coached Bulldog football team.

Start the season like you end it. In our best years we start out weak and finish strong, we need to come out of the gate playing hard.

No off season disciplinary problems, as tough as it may seem, we need a zero tolerance policy to insure we don’t have suspensions to start the season with.

I was a fan in the 70’s where we lost to Pittsbug and properly congratulated our kids and the coaching staff. I was a fan with the dominant team of Herschall that was 1-2 in bowl games and missed out on another championship and I am a fan during last 12 years 117 wins2 SEC championships and 50+ pros, I also am a fan when I see GA come up short and struggle with other good teams. I was a fan when we finished 6-7 and am a fan as we have gone 21-6 the last 2 years in the best conference in the nation!!!! Ironically we are finishing with the same record as SC with great coach Spurrier, Les Miles, Yes I support Coach Richt and as I said on a local talk show would happily encourage my son or any of my players to play for Coach Richt. All these people who are complaining about their pain and embarassment about being thrashed by a top ranked South Carolina team need to listen to us old folks about when we got thrashed at homecoming by Virginia 38-0. People who complain about a close lose to Kentucky can listen to us described being beaten 44-0 by Kentucky at home. All of these under the Great Vince Dooley. All the people who are complaining about CMR need to look at what’s happened at Tennessee and Auburn and realize that if we take their advice, that is infinitely more likely than that the next Saban is sitting at home waiting for the phone call from us. Our glass isn’t half full, it’s one nanoliter from overflowing but still people will complain and die of thirst than enjoy the fruits of a great season with a great team, a great coach, a record smashing quarterback, a GATA defense and kids who played their hearts out so that idiots could criticize them.
