Dawgs quickly took all the suspense out of this year’s Tech game

The Georgia Bulldogs set the template for their fourth straight win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Saturday right from the start.

Malcolm Mitchell returned the opening kickoff to the Tech 44. Aaron Murray threw a pass to tailback Todd Gurley, who then ran the ball to the 17 on the next play. Another pass to to surprisingly acrobatic big tight end Artie Lynch put the ball at the 3, and then Gurley ran it in for the first score.

Time elapsed: 1 minute, 3 seconds.

The Georgia offense pretty much continued to have its way with the Tech defense until Mark Richt started emptying the bench, but that was only half the winning equation.

The key to beating Tech is defending their pesky triple-option, and Georgia showed how it would do that on the Jackets’ opening drive, too. Tech chewed up yardage and was moving toward the Georgia goal line, thanks in large part to those option pitches, when Bacarri Rambo took matters (and the ball) into his own hands, snatching it away from a Tech player and returning it to midfield.

Tech’s clock-eating offense racks up big yardage, and Saturday was no exception, with the Jackets getting 426 yards (306 on the ground, 120 in the air) and controlling the ball twice as long as the Dogs (39:56 to 20:04). But until the Georgia subs gave up a meaningless TD long after the game had been decided, Tech couldn’t manage more than a field goal.

Meanwhile, the Georgia offense built a big lead early and cruised to a 42-10 win that wasn’t as close as that score would lead you to believe.

There were plenty of heroes in red jerseys.

Gurley ran for 97 yards on 12 carries, Murray completed 14 of 17 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns. Rambo was a one-man wrecking crew, also snagging an interception that tied Jake Scott’s UGA career record of 16 in addition to the take-away fumble recovery. Alec Ogletree seemed to be all over the field, notching 15 tackles. Christian Robinson had another strong game with 13 tackles (two for loss) and before big John Jenkins had to leave the field he got 11 tackles plugging the middle.

It wasn’t quite the equal of the 51-7 butt-kicking 10 years ago, but Saturday’s domination of the Jackets by the Dogs came close.

All in all, a chilly but gorgeous November Saturday was a complete joy for the Red and Black faithful, culminating with a nice surprise: an on-field ceremony after the game in which Gov. Nathan Deal presented the Governor’s Cup to the winners of the in-state rivalry.

“Keep up the good work,” Deal told the Bulldogs. “We’re looking for a national championship.”

One more win and that will be a distinct possibility.

What a blast this season has been!

Feel free to share your views of Georgia’s latest blow-out win over Tech.

Dawgs, before some of my more rowdy and uncouth brethern take to showing their lack of class, congratulations. I had hoped to be entertained for at least the first half. Excellent play from exceptional athletes, and great coaching. Good luck next week in Atlanta.

How did North Carolina gve up 68 to this High School offense? The Georgia Southern game was much tougher and more compelling.

Well said Dawg1 and I totally agree! Now, we have a full week to hear the national pundits give us no chance against Bama. If we can block them, they will lose. We have too much offensive firepower for them to shut us down and our defense is just as good as theirs since Shawn Williams called the D out. Should be a great game.

great game all around…as a bulldawg fan from a younger generation, this is definitely the most exciting time i can ever remember with so much on the line. i wasn’t around during the herschel years…woohoo!!!!

rambo was a beast today, gurley and marshall complimenting each other perfectly

i enjoyed this post bill but get annoyed when writers use the word “literally” like that. did the dawgs “literally” set the template? how else could they have set it? figuratively?

ACC should stop playing football

November 24th, 2012
9:57 pm

The ACC, already embarrassing as a football conference, looks all the worse being parked next to the
SEC. They should become a basketball only conference, and the SEC can take Clemson and FSU.
Give the West division MO and Tx A&M, East gets Free Shoes and Clempsun.

UGA has the best athletes in college football. If Murray does’t get rattled, we will do the same to BAMA that we did to tech. Big IF, I know, but I hope he shows up cool, calm, and collected. Go JUnkYarD DaWgS

The only reason we lost today is b/c all of our football players have a Calculus test on Monday! CPJ did not even let them practice.

I remember the AJC article when Johnson was hired and some clown who grew up with him in North Carolina talked about how there was ‘a new sheriff in town’ and how Mark Richt better be worried…..what a joke. Johnson = Richt’s b&^ch.

Just the kind of game I hoped for from a team worthy of playing for an SEC championship and possibly competing for a National Championship. Also, about what I would have expected from a team not worthy of playing for an ACC championship, but entering via the back door and playing in one anyway. Talk about backing in, Jackets….

November 24th, 2012

Somebody at ABC please ask Musberger about the “toughness” of the SEC schedule now! He shot off his mouth about the SEC “weak” games last week and this week the SEC murdered both ACC division champs so the 10th and 11th best teams in the nation got killed!

Does it really matter? I know I’m gonna get jumped on like the Bulldawgs on Blackout day…..but, we can’t beat Bama. CMR has choked verses good teams on a historic level. Is there any reason to believe that this game will be different? I really want to win, but after the meltdown in Columbia, I have no faith. We are classic underacheivers, and Bama will pound every weakness we have. Sorry. I’m just saying what most of you are thinking.

Well, it’s for all the marbles next w/e in the dome. AL will be favored and rightly so. They looked good all season even in their only loss to TAM. In order for the dawgs to beat them will depend on protecting AM and allow him the time to find his receivers. That will be key. If the D can stop AL’s running game and give our def backfield a chance to pick off some passes and stop AL from making TD’s. If AM comes under pressure as he did in last years SECCG and SC this season its all over for the dawgs. In short, GA will have to have a perfect game on both sides of the ball to beat AL. Good luck dawgs.

@run the damn ball….ummm Florida is a pretty good team. Didnt choke there. The Dawgs can win this game. They may not be favored but the have a good shot at beating these guys and if you havent noticed these guys are playing w an edge like I havent seen since the Hawaii Sugar Bowl…those guys could have beat anyone…and these Dawgs can too !!! Go Dawgs!!!

The Dawgs need to take it one game at a time, as for can the Dawgs beat Bama— Yes they can but they will have to show up from the kickoff right through the end of the game. Yes they came out of the gate fast yesterday against Tech but then promptly allowed Tech to move at will down the field and was fortunate Rambo was able to take that ball out of the Tech players arms at the one yard line. This team has a toughness and yes a chip on its shoulder from all of the disrespect that has been tossed at them the last 4 years. They have a chance to shut up all of their critics but it is still one game at a time.

Go Dawgs

November 25th, 2012

So, the Number 1, 4, and 5 teams don’t have to play in a “Championship” game and don’t play again until the Bowl season, but the Number 2 and 3 teams play a “Championship” game to see which losing team gets jumped. That sounds about right.

Since CMR has been here there has been alot more years of this than years of not…..so either jump on the wagon that us good fans have been on all along, or find another team….because Dawg fans you are not….

November 25th, 2012

I for one can’t believe the lack of tech fans at the game!! This use to be be one of the best rivalry games in the country and Coach Johnson has run it into the ground. I feel sorry for tech, I wish they would hire a coach that can coach in this day and age and recruit. He has brought a once proud, rich with tradition football school to a laughing stock. It’s a shame.

November 25th, 2012
4:47 pm

Only way Dawgs beat Bama is for them to play error free ball and yes, be able to run the ball for at least 150 yards. Bama will be be bringing it hard at Murray. The question is,m will Murray finally play up to the level of a champion or remain a 2nd tier QB?

The Jackets are the, ahem, Coastal Division champions of a BCS conference (ACC), and you’re admitting that they literally had no chance against an SEC team (also a division champion) that happens to be GT’s biggest rival? Tech football is in for a long, dark period, and having Notre Dame play a half-schedule won’t help a bit. The ACC should put their two genuine football schools out of their misery and let them seek other conference affiliations without having to pony up $50 million to make it happen. Florida State and Clemson deserve better, even though they didn’t show it last night. Let Pitt and Syracuse replace them instead of adding them to the mess.

The only way for UGA to beat Bama is to score more points than they do. The Dawgs can run for negative yards and throw 4 INTs to go along with 16 penalties for 120 yards, but if they outscore Alabama they win the game.

Ogletree has blinding speed, but his coach needs to get him to tackle at the waist. He missed a high tackle vs. the Institutors, but the strong runners from Bama will make him and us pay. You can’t tackle strong runners high.
Go Dawgs!
