Mark Richt knows there's only one thing the Bulldogs need to be concerned about right now: Georgia Tech. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
Back when Elvis died, the paper sent me to Memphis and Tupelo. One of the folks I encountered in Elvis’ hometown was a woman who had been close to the King and wore one of those lightning bolt TLC (Tender Loving Care) necklaces he gave his female friends. The equivalent for his male buddies was one that said TCB (Taking Care of Business).
TCB. Those initials stand for words to live by for the Georgia Bulldogs right now. In other words, they need to focus on one thing and one thing only: beating the Georgia Tech Yellowjackets.
Not the upcoming meeting with Alabama in the Georgia Dome.
Not the chances of playing for a BCS national championship if they manage to knock off the Crimson Tide.
Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech.
Mark Richt kept repeating that mantra in his Sunday night teleconference with laser-like focus despite the repeated efforts of reporters to get him to even acknowledge that he’d watched the Baylor-Kansas State or Stanford-Oregon games Saturday night that suddenly catapulted the winner of the SEC Championship back into contention for this year’s BCS showdown in Miami.
Richt refused to be lured off his single-minded conversational track because he recognizes what his team is facing this week.
The biggest challenge for the Dogs as the annual game with Tech approaches is not how to deal with the dreaded triple-option — having schemed for it already the past two years, Todd Grantham has a pretty good idea of what needs to be done there. And after facing the similar (though not identical) Georgia Southern attack, even his freshman players who haven’t gone up against Paul Johnson’s attack before have a much better feel for what they need to do.
No, the first — and, for the moment, the biggest — obstacle the Bulldogs must hurdle if they really want their dreams for this season to come true is shutting out all the SEC Championship and BCS chatter that will be tweeted at them from all sides and working up a full-blooded frenzy of hatred for the team from North Avenue.
Because you can bet the Jackets will come to town fired up even more than usual over the possibility of wrecking the Bulldogs’ postseason goals.
The theme of the week for the Jackets is already being recited by Tech fans on their Internet gathering sites: “WE CAN RUIN THEIR SEASON.”
That has them more excited than even the possibility of stumbling into a spot in the ACC championship game, because 365 days a year the thing that Tech players and fans think about more than anything else is beating Georgia. And if they can ruin a special season while they’re at it, even better.
Of course, you can’t expect Georgia’s players not to be excited by their team’s rise to No. 3 in the latest BCS standings, right behind Notre Dame and Alabama, or the prospect of playing their way into a chance at winning the crystal football.
They’re kids and it’s only natural if some of them come down with a bad case of BCS fever this week.
But what they need to keep foremost in their minds is the cold, hard reality that if they don’t beat Tech they’ll never get a chance at that dream rematch with the Fighting Irish for another national championship.
Sure, they could still win the SEC Championship even if the unthinkable somehow happened Between the Hedges this week, but a two-loss SEC champ isn’t going to play for the national title this year.
As Richt noted Sunday, “That’s the whole key to football is to be able to focus on the only thing that really matters and that’s this week’s game.”
Thankfully, some of the team elders have been quick to note what’s truly important this week. As Alec Ogletree put it after Saturday’s win over Georgia Southern: “We have to get back to practice and focus on this week’s game plan, and then the week after focus on Atlanta. It’s week by week, and we can’t get ahead of ourselves.”
Wide receiver Rhett McGowan probably summed it up best when he tweeted: “Let’s take care of business? Playoffs start now!”
And Georgia Tech is the first step.
FANS BACK IN BLACK?
A movement has started among UGA students to have fans stage a “blackout” at Sanford Stadium for the Tech game.
You can pretty much bet the house that the Georgia team will be in its familiar red home jerseys, but by early Sunday I’d already heard from the UGA Paintline (the guys who paint their torsos for each home game) and other students asking me to spread the word that they want fans to wear black for the game.
What do you think of that idea? A fun way to get everyone revved up, or a needless gimmick? I mean, do we really need any additional enticement to be ready to cheer on the Dogs against the hated insects from Atlanta?

I think a blackout is needed for the Tech game. It puts the focus and intensity straight back into Tech. It’s not as flashy as the Auburn blackout was, but it keeps the focus to the game we need to be focusing on. Go Dawgs.

Georgia it’s not the uniform, otherwise the old uniforms of the 80’s would be my pick. Black-out ? not important. What’s important is Georgia stays focused and realized Georgia Tech ran all over Duke and is a challenger for the ACC.

Having school colors in itself IS a gimmic. Marching band, Gimmic. Name 10 others game day traditions and it’s all gimmics. Come to think of it, most of the entire production of college football is one big gimmic. It’s a game. Remember?
You know, they technically don’t even need people sitting in the stands to observe them, to play the game. Fans are basically, gimmics.
That being said, Tech is not the time for a black-out,especially if its a half-hearted non-official movement.. BUT when it is, please stop this faux adversion to wearing one color over the other, in the name of (any number of cliche’ terms for playing well).

Black-outs are just fun. That’s it. It’s not to make the Oline block better, it’s not to make the DB cover better. It’s not to turn out an all SEC RB. Its a fan participation encouragement. So if black outs are so bad, and they were done for the fans, then that is an indictment of the fans, is it not?
The only evidence we have about a uni-changes is that when the team has weaknesses, the uni’s don’t change that. There is certainly no rational fear, that they cause the team to play worse.

Altamaha, agree w/you. I really could care less what is worn by the fans, red or black. Personally, I am fine with either. Although I must admit the reflection of noon day sun off the sea of black is easier on the eyes. Regardless, the color has nothing to do with the outcome of the game or the performance of the players. What happened in the ‘08 blackout game against Bama is simple, they came out on fire and we were not focused and made a lot of mistakes, period.
However, there is something that has always bothered me about the patrons of Sanford (alum fyi). It is the fans inability to make that place loud and an advantage! Almost 93,000 people should be able to create quite an environment that is a true “home field advantage”. However, with the exception of some key games in the past, I’ve always been let down with the general noise factor in the stadium. People don’t need to scream insults and act like a bunch of rednecks…they just need to be LOUD!

Several comments said things like “I hope we beat them, but our sorry defense will cost us,” or “UGA will win, but we will make it a game (10-14 points).” The ones who come on this site and talk trash are either actually fans of another team (Florida, South Carolina, Auburn) or else they are Tech fans trying to stir the pot who actually don’t know how bad their team actually is.

Unless he gets a 1st round draft status, I think he comes back and eclipses SEC passing records and finishes his PHD.
His “big game troubles” notwithstanding, he will get drafted. He has a big arm and performs great at the bigtime QB camps – the Mannings even Archie were really impressed with him – so he can wow the NFL guys at the Combine.
I really hope Richt gets this done – this is the best opportunity he will get – what with losing 4 or 5 first round D-players, and the schedules rotating back to being more difficult for a few seasons.

Altamaha: Surely, you recall that after Greg McGarity took over the AD’s job in Athens, he and CMR made a big production of taking several time-consuming, unworthy tasks off CMR’s plate, so that the coach could spend more time studying the craft of coaching. I recall that he was planning to dedicate himself to studying some cutting edge practices. I guess that if you forgot all about that episode, then the joke would pass by you.

I call you out cause you are the have been the biggest and have been the biggest Appologist for this inept coaching staff on this blog
Again Ive argued with you for years that this coaching staff will never win a national title cause they arent national title level coaches and Ive stated they should not be a top 10 paid salaried coaching staff
Now its right in front of them; no more if’s and buts here it is
If this coaching staff is elite like you and the rest of kool-aid drinkers think they are due to your constant defense of them; then they will win the National title cause in my opinion talent wise; ND and AL do not have the talent that UGA has this year
So to you and others on hear that have claimed Richts greatness compared to Dooley’s well nows hears his chance
Can he win the big games Dooley did Richt hasnt;

Well I doubt there have been many, if any, normal regular games that haved matched the intensity of the 2007 Blackout, for any number of SEC teams.
But I thought it was very loud (to start) at the Bama 2008, and I recall the tech game being a pretty loud event.
SC 2009, very loud game, as was the LSU game.
Not much to cheer about in 2010, but the fans were very engaged when tech came to town.
SC 2011.
Auburn, Tn, and one of those games over the past several years have been good fan participation.

The 2007 Black Out was the perfect storm, But that was going to be a great game no matter. And nobody “needed” the black out to get fired up for that one. What made it great was that they used an already sky-high mood to launch the idea in the first place. . Just beat UF, rising in the national scene, playing great, Moreno…….night game……..Auburn. It will be loud Sat. Tech is still Tech. The Dawgs will be ready. Nuff said on that subject.
For those that opt to call themselves fans and chose to NOT support the team because they want the coaching staff fired… you are not true Bulldogs. You can bluster all you want but by choosing to continue to wish the team ill in the hopes that the coaches will be fired you have proven yourselves to be nothing but traitors. You are more Tech fans than Georgia fans.
If you really are Bulldogs then you would rally behind this team with all of your heart and soul. Do I agree with every call? Certainly not. But I bleed red and black win, lose or draw. You can call me a kool-aid drinker or whatever stupid epithet you can muster but I support my Bulldogs regardless of who is coaching.
This team has a more legitimate shot at winning it all than any team since 1982. The 2002 team had a great defense and an OK offense. This team is as good as the 2007 team was at the end. We can beat ANYBODY, if we play with intensity. So for you “fire Mark Richt” so called fans, I hope you will have honor enough to abstain from the celebrations after the Dawgs win out because you had nothing to do with it at all. The color jersey we wear has no bearing on the game. The reason Bama beat us in ‘08 had nothing to do with the blackout. It was all to do about our preparation versus theirs and the fact that we had Willie Martinez at defensive coordinator. If they wanna wear black, let them wear black. Heck I don’t care if they wear green as long as we come focused and play our tails off. It’s all about focus and preperation. We come to play, we’ll absolutely CRUSH Tech. If not it will be a close game. By the way, lay off the team and coaching staff, this was the STUDENTS idea, not the coaching staff. I’m all for it. Just win baby and GO DAWGS!!!

A fan-initiated blackout is not about getting the team fired up, it’s about getting the fans fired up and focused on the game. I’ve been to too many noon starts where the fans (and the team) don’t show up until midway through the 2nd quarter.
If you are going to the game, get your butt out of bed, get to the game early and make noise! If you have tickets but can’t make it to the game, give your tickets to a Dawg fan so they can make noise! Don’t let those tickets go to waste or to a Tech fan (redundant, I know).

If the fans go crazy the entire game…..Georgia will win!! I Tech hushes the crowd then its not a good sign.
Just be awesome to see Black in Sanford Stadium. From the shoes all the way to the neck in black.
I cant afford to go there but man what an awesome sight to see.
I tell you that if the Bulldogs can get really fired up for this game and extremely focused on Tech and be the same team Defensively like they were in Florida…..it’ll be a long day for Tech.
I know they have it in them to bring that kind of emotion to the game saturday but the question is can they find their MOJO saturday.
My concern from watching last saturdays contest was that Ga. Southern got big gains on the outside because the CB didnt get there in time and the down linemen allowed to get blown out up the middle.
Im sure Tech saw this as well as Grantham and we have got to stop this from the very start because again we give up 300 yds rushing.
Tech is better than Ga. Southern because unlike them they can pass too.
IF we stop the run then we have a better chance of getting an interception because it will make Tech 1 dimensional.
Our Defense will be the key to what happens in the game and i expect Tech to blitz alot so that it can help from exposing their weaknesses on their defense.
Let me just say that our OL has got to open up holes w/o holding for our RB’s but also whoever is in the backfield blocking for Murray please stop trying to cut the legs out of the opposing DE coming off the corners.
Look foolish eating grass as the DE jumps over you into Murray. Be a man and block that guy coming off the edge and stay with him until the whistle blows.
OL pay attention to who youre lining up against because you should always keep a 180deg prerefferial vision on whats going on around you.
I do like that we are starting to use our TE more than before but guys this all comes down to execution and fundamentals of football.
Focus on the task at hand beating Tech because they will have to play a flawless game to beat us in Sanford saturday.

As long as we dont do a blackout for SECCG… that didnt work out to well for us the last time we did it (against Bama as well).
Also, ND isnt goingto lose to USC – the starting QB is out for the game and I dont think they have the horses to pull it off (scholly reductions starting to pinch a little ?). And I say this as USC is my second favorite team (my dad went to ND, he and I argued football all the time…).

So if the fans wear black, the players are less likely to go out there and play hard?

I agree that the black out is neededed to fire up the fans… 100%… Something !!!!
Some are critical of the team looking for GIMICKS to fire them up, …. I’ll be honest…From what Ive seen after visits to 4 other schools…A Gimick is needed to fire up the UGA fans. There has been nothing in Sanford in the way of fan excitement that I have seen in 6-8 trips that would touch an SC, LSU, Bama filled stadium. Fans sit on their hands with mouths shut and create no home field advantage. And BOOOING???
Any home field advantage at a UGA game comes through loud speakers….Want to fire up this team up…. Make some noise… If black is what it takes wear black for gods sake!!

come on people……the game definitely means a lot to georgia tech but it also means a lot to uga…if not why schedule ga southern before hand….no mistake they both HATE EACH OTHER! Richt v. PJ is a classic! GT loves PJ but hate option and UGA hates Richt but loves winning!

Yes, lets all be sure to gather to watch a game that others will be playing, and scream and yell, and make hand jectures in unison, and chant together, and sing songs, and go through all of our gyrations and pagentry wearing our officially licensed logo appearal… BUT please… not all the same color, because you know, that might seem like a “gimmic”.

I think you DAWG fans are the ones who are delusional, us TECH fans are just hopeful. You’ve played two decent defenses all year (one of which beat your tails) and you think you have the best offense in the SEC? Get real. You played one of the most Nancy schedules in all of the SEC. No doubt Tech’s schedule was weak, but you have proved nothing yet! THWG

I hope it’s okay to share this (credit will follow):
Georgia Tech-Georgia. Also known as “Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate.” There may be a Governor’s Cup kind of trophy, which is suitably ambiguous because you can’t really make a trophy symbolizing hate.
Series: Georgia leads 62-39-5 and have won 10 of the last 11. But six of the last eight have been one-score games.
…Georgia 48, Georgia Tech 28. Tied at 14 at halftime, panicking Bulldogs fans resume calling for Mark Richt to be fired. But a Yellow Jackets defense that has surrendered 42 or more points four times this season is in over its head and collapses in the second half. Afterward, Georgia fans confidently predict victory over Alabama in the SEC title game and forget the fact that they’ve been itching to fire a coach who is now 21-5 over the past two seasons.”

THWG – Strength of schedule is relative to the confrence you play in…. You can make a correlation to highschool foorball and the A thru AAAAAA classifications.
The SEC would be the 5A-6A grouping. Thru the season they line up against each other … There are your top teams(normally 6 or 7) and your bottom teams within the confrence in any given year…. The beat up on each other…..They are relatively even withintheir confrence (SC can bet UGA, Old Miss an bear LSU) Everybody cant play everybody in their confrence, but you end up at the end of the season with a winner for the classification. Currently there is only one confrence in the AAAAAA classification. (this will change with time).
Then you have the 3A-4A classification confrences. Curently Pac12 Big 10 ACC Big 12….Thru the season they line up against each other … There are your top teams (normally 1 or two per confrence) and your bottom teams within the confrence in any given year…. They beat up on each other…..They are relatively even and can compete with others in their clasifiation. Baylor can beat Oregon’s ..Stanford can beat Kansas) Everybody cant play everybody in their confrence, but you end up at the end of the season with a winner for the classification..
You then have your 1A-2A grouping who do the same…. C-USA’s….
At the end of the season you dont have classification champs as in highschool…. we throw them all together in one poll to align them for bowls and a NC game. This is where the problem comes in. Yes there might be a AAA team out there that on a given day gives a AAAAAA team a battle and pulls out a win but day in and day out AAA can’t compete with AAAAAA.
Hate it that K and O hadto lose a game, but it is only fitting that they did to open the door gain for the AAAAAA champ, be it Bama or UGA. Had the SEC been left out, no one, not even ESPN could say that the best team won te 2012 Championship.
SO…. Let the season play out. No UGA has not played the toughest SEC schedule posible, but once that SECCG is over we will have true AAAAAA champ that cn not be argued and that winner will move on to play the best of AAA. Thats just the way it is right now.

I for one actually did read the article and understand it is about the fans only, however,If our senior players request to don the black jerseys I hope Richt would listen to them. It never seems to be an issue with the Falcons wearing black or throwback uni’s every now and then. An occassional changeup is ok..good for excitement and high school recruits. Sounds like the Nike/Under Armour influence will create more changes for years to come anyway. With that said, old traditional red will always be first as it should be.

Bill, I just watched a segment on ESPN titled College Football Experts and it was hosted by a former GT quarterback and seated next to him was the former Gator Kevin Carter. The anti Georgia bias was amazing not even discussing the rivalry game this weekend. They certainly pushed for Floridas position in the National Championship game without mentioning Georgia’s victory over the lizzards. I hope the bulldogs plant 60 on the bugs this weekend!

I keep seeing the pop-up speculative scores for the Ga Dome game with Bama. 1) last years O-Line was big and fat and slow, with very little foot speed and lacked good technique. They were a bunch of guards trying to play multiple positions (as evidenced by the NFL draft; they were placed at the guard positon)–This O-Line is much more athletic, better footwork, and their technique has improved over the season–they are inexperienced, but they are getting better as a unit. I have studied them all season–as stated in an earlier post I played QB at a D-1 school. The O-Line can make ot break a QB and an offensive game plan. This O-Line grew up at Carolina–many were too angry to notice, but i noticed–more often than not the RBs missed an assignment etc… this O-Line is better than we give credit–maybe it is pie in the sky but here is the prognostication UGA 27–Bama 20.
I was a terrible critic of Friend, but he is doing a good job for what he has to work with–Bama may overwhelm the O-Line, but it will not be another LSU. If Murray has time he is dangerous–he just doesn’t do well in a hurry–It really comes down to the Oline play-we will see, but i choose t be optimistic. Go Dawgs!!!!

We are not likely to have to try to win the second half of the SECCG this time with a under sized scat back, as the best rushing option, either.
Also, our defense has shown it can play better in the second half, which was not the case in all the losses last year.
It’s just not the same team.
However, I do think this Alabama team is better than that LSU team was, too.
