Fan talk: Triple option, Gurshall’s workload, Murray returning for another year, and bowl scenarios

Quarterback Jerick McKinnon leads Georgia Southern's productive rushing attack. (Associated Press)

Quarterback Jerick McKinnon leads Georgia Southern's productive rushing attack. (Associated Press)

It won’t be fun for the Georgia players fending off those cut-blocks and it probably won’t be as pretty as many in the Bulldog Nation would like, but Mark Richt’s Bulldogs should emerge from their SEC Cupcake Weekend match against Georgia Southern with a 10th victory and fully up to speed on handling the triple-option offense that they’ll see again next week.

The Eagles bring the Football Championship Subdivision’s leading rushing attack to Athens, averaging 401.2 yards per game on the ground. Southern’s rushing attack is led by quarterback Jerick McKinnon, a former Sprayberry High School star who was the Southern Conference offensive player of the week after beating Howard by running for a career-high 198 yards and three touchdowns. He also threw for two more touchdowns, though he only passed the ball four times in the game. That put McKinnon over 1,000 yards rushing.

So the Eagles are likely to control the ball for a while Between the Hedges and will rack up some yards. Probably a few points, too. They ran for 302 yards and scored 21 points last year against Alabama’s top-rated rushing defense.

But if Todd Grantham’s defense is patient, sticks to its assignments and can avoid key injuries, the Bulldogs’ advantage in terms of size and speed should allow them to keep the Eagles under control. Triple-option offenses also are prone to put the ball on the ground, and GSU has had some trouble with that this season.

On the other side of the line of scrimmage, Aaron Murray, Gurshall, Tavarres King and company should prove too much for an outmanned Southern defense.

It might take the Dawgs a while to pull away — that was the case with Bama last year — but at least they’ll have had a meaningful tune-up for the Governor’s Cup match with the Yellow Jackets.

Now, let’s check some of this week’s Junkyard Mail. …

Should Keith Marshall be getting more carries? (Associated Press)

Should Keith Marshall be getting more carries? (Associated Press)

Brett Miolen writes: [Todd] Gurley and [Keith] Marshall have been great this season and both have shown they can score at anytime from anywhere. Gurley gets the bulk of the work but Marshall has played great despite only getting around 6-10 carries a game. With his ability, do you see any way he can get more involved or get more touches?

While I’m sure he wouldn’t mind a few more carries, Marshall noted this week that thanks to the reduced load this season his body isn’t taking the beating it did in high school, and both he and Gurley are staying fresh. The slightly larger Gurley actually is built more for the heavy load of being an SEC primary back, and it’s hard to argue in favor of taking the ball out of his hands any more, what with him approaching becoming only the second UGA true freshman to break the 1,000-yard mark. Marshall is the more likely of the two to break a really long run of 50-plus yards, as he’s tied for second place nationally in that category with four. Of course, thanks to the Bulldogs’ balanced offense and potent passing attack, neither back is close to getting worn down. Gurley had 11 carries against Auburn and Marshall had eight. And Boo Malcome also usually gets in the mix late in games. “It’s kept them from getting too many carries where a true freshman might really get beat down,” Richt said this week. Bottom line: Gurley and Marshall make a pretty effective tandem with the current splitting of the load.

Aaron Murray is considered likely to return for his senior season at UGA. (Associated Press)

Aaron Murray is considered likely to return for his senior season at UGA. (Associated Press)

Blake Doster writes: Bill, I just read that Aaron Murray is coming back next year. How does that effect Hutson Mason next year? I thought he redshirted this year to be the starter next year. Please help me understand.

In a related question, Scott Vaughan writes: 1. Aaron Murray — coming back for his last year? 2. If not Aaron, who? I was surprised when they ran out Parker Welch against Auburn, first, rather than [Christian] LeMay. Reading too much into it? Great blog site. Thanks for representing the fan base.

Thanks, Scott. To answer Blake first, Murray has not said he’s definitely coming back to UGA for his senior year, but most observers figure he will since he’ll get to polish his game, enhance his NFL prospects and probably break Danny Wuerffel’s career SEC record for touchdown passes. Murray currently is in fifth place with 83, and the record is 114. By the end of this season, Murray stands a good chance of passing Tim Tebow, Chris Leak and Peyton Manning for second place. As for Mason, the reason he’s taking a redshirt this season is to give him a year of separation from Murray. That way, even if Murray returns for his senior season, Mason could have a year as Georgia’s starter after that. As for Welch playing ahead of LeMay, Georgia’s coaching staff has indicated that’s because he has exhibited a firmer grasp of the offensive playbook than LeMay.

James Ernest Nobles writes: Bill, no one has addressed the possibility of Auburn beating Alabama in the Iron Bowl and knocking them out of the SEC championship game. While the odds are against this happening, there is always the possibility. In that case wouldn’t Texas A&M go to Atlanta and play Georgia for the SEC championship?

If you saw Auburn play against the Dogs, you know the odds of them beating Bama are extremely long. But stranger things have happened in rivalry games, so let’s run with that scenario for a moment. If Alabama were to lose to Auburn and Texas A&M and LSU both were to win out, the SEC West would be a three-way tie. If that happened, LSU would play in the SEC Championship game because the Tigers and Aggies would have 5-1 divisional records, while the Tide would have a 4-2 SEC West record and LSU beat the Aggies head-to-head, giving them the ultimate tie-breaker.

BCS-logo-Black_BackgroundReagan Mabry writes: Bill, there is a lot of football to be played yet before the BCS championship game is determined and anything can happen in the next three weeks. My question is this, has Mark Richt learned anything from the 2002, 2005 and 2007 seasons that style points do actually count? I think he needs to have the offense score as many points as possible the next two weeks and not let up. Then UGA could close up a little in the BCS points to be in position as the best one loss team if any team loses. I know this is not Mark Richt’s style but could end up hurting UGA again by just doing enough to win. I think Mark Richt should have been on ESPN and every media outlet possible in 02, 05 and 07 doing PR work stating UGA’s claim to be in the NC game. Saban did his PR work right last year and just hope Mark Richt has learned something if he gets his team in that position again.

If you’re expecting Richt to suddenly morph into one of those coaches who keeps throwing touchdown passes deep into the fourth quarter to run up the score, it’s not likely to happen. But your point about coaches who play the PR game to sell their team’s position is well taken. If Georgia does win out and beat Alabama in the SEC Championship game, a spot in the BCS national title game still would not be assured, even if two of the three undefeated teams ahead of the Dogs were to suffer a loss. The only thing that would be guaranteed for Georgia would be a spot in the BCS. So some politicking by Richt along the lines of Nick Saban and Les Miles definitely would seem in order. On the other hand, if Georgia loses to Bama, it’s highly unlikely the Dogs would get the SEC’s second spot in the BCS no matter what Richt did. And while most predictions are that the Dogs would wind up in either the Capitol One or Outback in that case, some bowl observers think that if they’re the SEC championship game loser they could fall as far as Atlanta’s Chick-fil-A Bowl, however unfair that might seem. It all has to do with bowl committee preferences for home-state teams, higher rankings and traveling fan bases. On the brighter side, both of ESPN’s bowl prognosticators, Mark Schlabach and Brad Edwards, see Georgia beating Alabama in the SEC game and then meeting Clemson in the Sugar Bowl.

Mason only threw the ball 30 times last year

I understand thats about what a team does when putting their back up in but he could be used to throw the ball much more in those games he comes in

In all honesty if we happen to lose to Clemson SC and LSU early on in the season this team will probably fold and I much rather see him get more playing time since the season will be wrote off anyway

I don’t think Murray will return because he should finish graduate school this year and he will get drafted in the 2nd to 3rd round and get his shot at the NFL. If Murray does return to UGA either Mason or LeMay will transfer – and maybe both. LeMay is a tremendous athlete rated #4 QB before he got in to his problems in high school. He is primarily a passer but can run. The situation with him is that he has not played in a real game, other than a few mop plays at UGA, since his junior year in high school. That’s three years off without playing. Hopefully Richt will give him some playing time in the next two games if UGA gets a decent lead but so far even when UGA has been way ahead he has only been brought in with 10 or less minutes in the game.

Please stop with Lemay stuff; the guy has to run to the sideline to get the play; and he cant read a defense

You have that or you dont and has shown neither; why do you think the coaches dont let him throw. He’s great for a fake run and dump pass but UGA has to move on to someone who doesnt need that much development

What in my but dont you understand

Games like Vandy Buffalo FL atl Auburn GSU where we lead by a huge margin at the half let him come in and throw the ball at least 20 times instead of 5 or 6 then run the clock out with hand offs

what dont you get about that

Yes he was. Go back and look up the well documented shoulder injury that later came out.
And BTW, Mettenburger failed to complete a forward pass in the G day game before the 2009 season. He was nowwhere close a better option over Cox, (who wasn’t nearly the problem that year, as not having a Run game behind him.)

Well Vandy came down to the last play, we didnt play those others. Are we talking the real games he did play in, or hypothetically if he were playing this year?

He threw the ball as much as any backup in the country does, when trying to run the ball, shorten the game, not run up the score, in back up duty, ever does.

Contradiction,
I think Bill’s referring to the games this weekend as a whole:
LSU/OleMiss, Arkansas/MissSt, Tenn/Vandy, and a bunch of non-confs vs (much) lesser opponents (with Mizzou/Syracuse, hard to tell who the weaker team is). At least Ga Southern is (1) a much stronger team than the others, and (2) serves a purpose — prep for GT next week, even though you will give GT some film on how you plan to defense the TO.

The Qb is not the only reserve in the game, when it gets to that point. You’ve got back up linemen. You got back up Rbs. Wrs. To just say we are going to come out and try to fling the ball down the field 20 times is just not realistic. Even if you don’t subscribe to the theory that it’s poor sportmanship, or taking unnessesary risks, it’’s probably not going to be that successful, and the punter is the only one getting better. Why would you not be working on the running game just as much, with the reserves as well. That would seem to me to be just as valuable.

I don’t know if Murray has any ambitions to go pro. I’m sure he will get a draft evaluation done regardless. He still needs to prove he can step up in the big game. SEC Championship game will be a pretty good test for him. His lack of prototype size will hurt him but if he can remind teams of Drew Brees enough… he might get a shot. If he does come back look for 1 of the backups to make noise about transferring. I think he need to see a sports shrink to get him over the trying too hard bugaboo he has. He needs to trust that he can get it done. Remember John Smoltz had to do some time with that sports shrink early in his career too.
Mason will get the nod unless Ramsey ends up being a world beater. He will definitely redshirt. It will be interesting to see if Lemay breaks through because he definitely has talent.
Ga Southern should be an interesting test. I like having a tune up before Tech because the toughest thing about playing Tech is getting everybody on the same page against that High School offense of theirs. It’ll be interesting to see how frustrated Moobs Johnson gets when our overwhelmingly more talented D is up to speed on shutting down their option. Will it be a repeat of “we run this state?” I sure hope so.

Richt should have taken the red shirt off Murray his Freshman year and let him Quarterback the last 5 or 6 games. Murray’s shoulder problem had healed by then. It made no sense with Cox, being in his last year and no way was going Pro, to be the Quarterback. I guess Richt didn’t think it was worth burning Murray’s red shirt for just 5 or 6 games but because of that decision Murray was not ready to lead his second year at Georgia and we lost a lot of games.
Truth be known the reason Cox was the Quarterback his senior year was because Richt probably told him the year before if he didn’t transfer that he, COX , would be the starter the next year. I hope that Richt has not guaranteed Mason the Quarterback job . Murray will not go Pro next year , at best he would be drafted in the 5TH or 6TH round if at all unless he shows great leadership in the SEC Championship game and win it and then he may bump up to 2 to the 4TH round. I think it is 90% chance that Murray returns.
For those of you who think he is only going one year for his Masters, I am under the impression that he is in a two year program that will get him a Masters and PHD at the same time in Psychology.

If Murray returns next year then Ramsey , who is starting in January will red shirt. I just hope that if Ramsey is better than Mason in 2014 that Mason will not get the call over Ramsey because Richt has promise him the position if he didn’t transfer.
I think LeMay is probably better than Mason but for some reason can not learn the playbook and all the jobs that a Quarterback has to learn, like audibles. You would have to really simplify the play’s in order for LeMay to get to play , without going to the sideline after ever play. I think he transfers even though I think he had the potential of being a great Quarterback but Richt and Bobo expect a lot more independence from their Quarterback than most programs.

I think we try to run the ball down both Ga Southern and Tech’s throats. It often works out well to do to your opponent what they hope to do to you. Beat them at their own game. That is what we did against UF. We beat them at their own game. Pound the ball and play keep away. That way when the 4th quarter rolls around the Dawgs will be the ones breaking off 10-15 yard runs instead of the other way around.
You can’t make a virtually one dimensional team even more one dimensional. Moobs will run his triple option even when he is down by 4 TD’s… so you can’t hope to force him to throw the ball unless they are down 3 or 4 TD’s late in the game. That is when you know you have them beat. This is probably true for Ga Southern as well.

“Richt just cant beat saban”

How do you figure that Joe? Richt is 2-2 Vs. Nick Saban. 1-1 when he was at LSU and 1-1 since he’s been at Bama. We went to Tuscaloosa and beat them in Stafford’s Soph. year. Remember??

Why so negative all the time? I think we WILL beat Bama. This is not the same Bama team from last year. Their entire secondary is playing in the NFL now. If Mettenberger can throw for 300+ yds on them then what will Aaron Murray do? They have NO pass rush. Georgia actually has the better defense and much better offense. Give your Dawgs some credit.

Will you please stop talking about the 4th and 5th WR for crying out loud? You’re just not making any sense with that. We have 4 proven WR’s. That’s enough for any team. We’re mostly in 2 and 3 wide sets anyway. We already are as close to unstoppable as you can get. We’re averaging more yards per play than Oregon. We’re averaging more yds per game than any offense in UGA history. scoring 40 pts/game dude.

Jay Rome will never dominate. He’s a TE. Orson Charles was probably the best receiving TE we ever had. Would you describe his play as dominating? Rome is a freak athlete and will become an NFL caliber TE but he’s playing behind a senior now. He’s going to get some balls thrown his way.

Ray Drew? Next year is Ray Drew’s year. He’s not even a starter. Garrison Smith and Mike Thornton play ahead of him. Our pass rushers are Jarvis J and Jordan J. That’s who would be getting pressure on Mccarron anyway. And they will. Alabama has given up over 20 sacks this year. That’s more than our line has given up and we’ve thrown the ball probably twice as many times. Where’s that all-world Bama offensive line?

BTW Cornelious Washington had a great game vs. Florida. Even though he had no sacks he was very disruptive in the backfield. Why do you keep saying that we need all these bench layers to step up. We don’t need that. We just need the NFL talent that is starting for us to play a good game. The 4th and 5th WR and the 3rd string defensive end won’t make any difference unless som one ahead of them gets hurt.

@Patched…Only one coach/team, gets to win the national title every year. If he wins the SEC title it will be his 3rd in 12 seasons. Not bad considering UGA had not won one since 1980. Aren’t SEC titles championships as well? The guy is a great coach and even better person and UGA is lucky to have him! Do I get frustrated with some decisions from time time like the majority of the fan base. Sure but every coach makes bone headed decisions from time time as you can’t please everyone. How would you like to be a Bama fan this week? 1st and goal from the 6 with one of the best backs and offensive lines in the country and you throw it 3 out of 4 downs because the one running play didn’t work. UGA did something similar in Columbia. They were down 21 and finally had a drive right before half. Gurley gets 2 yards on the first 2 downs to move the ball to the 2 and we throw it on down 3 & 4. I would have rather run it 2 more times and if USCe stops us then we don’t deserve to be in the game then try throwing it. I’m sure Bama fans feel the same way about their chance in that last game. In fact that Bama game looked similar to the UGA-USCe game at 20-0. The only difference was that Bama was at home and thus was able to work themselves back into the game unlike UGA on the road.

Don’t you think you should trust Richt’s judgement on how to manage his QB’s? He’s coached and developed countless overly successful QB’s including: a heisman winner, a #1 overall draft pick, the former all-time NCAA leader in wins and currently a kid a will soon be the only QB in NCAA history to throw for 3000+ yds in 3 consecutive seasons and before it’s over he will have thrown more TD passes than anyone in NCAA history. Murray is commanding the highest scoring offense in UGA history. We’re averaging more yds/play than Oregon is and you want to see more of the backup. How does that make any sense?
