Which Georgia team will show up against Ole Miss?

Will John Jenkins and the rest of the Dogs defense come out fired up again this week? (Bob Andres/ AJC)

Will John Jenkins and the rest of the Dogs defense come out fired up again this week? (Bob Andres/ AJC)

A lot of Bulldogs fans are worrying that Ole Miss might prove to be a “trap” game for a Georgia team with a disturbing tendency to play down to its opponent’s level.

They wonder whether the defense that came out all fired up against the Gators after being called out as “too soft” will rise to the occasion without provocation. Even Mark Richt has half-joked that maybe someone needs to call them “sissies” in order to get Georgia defenders’ blood boiling.

Nationally, college football watchers wonder, like CBSsports.com asked, “Which Georgia team shows up? The one that beat Florida or the one that was pounded by South Carolina and barely beat Kentucky?”

Then there are others, like the folks at CollegeFootballNews.com, who see Georgia’s play against Florida as a fluke and believe the anemic showing against Kentucky comes closer to telling us what kind of team these Bulldogs are.

As CFN sums it up: “The Bulldogs had to go to a special place to ramp themselves up for Florida, and even then the team didn’t play all that well with just 273 yards of total offense with 14 penalties, three picks, and converting one of ten third down chances. That might have been a one-shot deal, and Georgia could easily slip back to its pre-Gator mold and be the mediocre team that struggled against a miserable UK team and had issues putting away Tennessee and Florida Atlantic. With a terrific pass rush and an aggressive defensive front that’s great at screwing things up, it’s possible the Rebels could catch an unfocused Georgia team napping a bit.”

In fact, CFN predicts exactly that, picking Ole Miss to knock off the SEC East frontrunner.

Of course, that’s not likely to be the consensus view this week. Most observers think that, while Georgia might have trouble coming out ramped up for Ole Miss, the Bulldogs still have too much talent to lose to the Rebels.

Still, it’d make a nice change of pace if Richt’s team came out this week with a determination to prove the naysayers and doubters wrong and put Ole Miss away early rather than following this year’s typical scenario of letting lesser teams dictate play early on while waiting until the second half to get rolling.

Georgia’s easily the better team. But will the Bulldogs play like it?

With Jarvis healthy, the rest of the players on D settling into their positions after the disruptions from suspensions, and confidence gained from the UF game, I believe the D will maintain a high level of play from here on out. I will predict boldly UGA takes care of business with Ole Miss (a good team showing steady improvement), wins out in the regular season and plays competitively in the SEC Championship game, regardless of opponent.

Better question – limit the focus to which Murray the Midget will show up. Turning the ball over (three) less than your opponents (6) is a tough way to play the game and expect to win week in and week out. See SC game.

Dawgs are like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates: you never know what you’ll get. One week it’s poor defense, the next week it’s poor special teams or poor offense. One of these days like the Vandy game we’ll put it all together against a top team and I think Alabama (if we get there) would be perfect setup for it to happen!!!!!

With the supposed talet level that UGA has, we should not have to “GET UP” to handle Old Miss. That again seems to be the proble with UGAfor the past several years…We are expeced to GET UP, whn we really just need to develop a focus and discipline to maintan a levell of play th would be expected of our talent level and ability…

BAMA….. Are they ” GETTING UP” for evary game??? They have beaten Old Mis, UT, MSU, MO, and Arky by an average score of 40 -8. Are they “Getting UP” or every game or ae they imply playing focused and disciplined and doing a good job of scoutin their opponent and game planning??

Now Bama will GET UP for LSU… you can bet your arse… They GOT UP for Michigan in the opener with all the hype…. but otherwise thy just play sund smart football.

We have a coach whi says publicly thathe doesnt know if the team will show up FIRE UP or not; suggest that maybethe press tke care of motivation by writing an insulting article….

Just expect the team to pay at a consistent and disciplined level and things willl take cre of themselves these last 4 games…. Save the GETTING U”P for ATLANTA when it should take something extra!!!!

Of the sources, CFN has the most accurate take on the situation. St. Markus Rectumus going from 1-9 in top ten wins since 2008 to now being 2-9 does not change the overall dynamic of the UGA football team. The players were more responsible for what happened last weekend than anything the coaching staff did.

Which Georgia team will show up? — now there’s the rub — and the main characteristic of a CMR-coached team. Win out, and all of us “neysayers” will shut up…play down to our competition the rest of the regular season, and suddenly the ‘12 season becomes Groundhog Day…

“I think the guys that have been here a while — myself, Christian Robinson, Bacarri Rambo, guys that have been here through the fire, through the 6-7 season — have realized that we’re Georgia,” King said. “We’re still that team that people need to fear when we walk on the field. It doesn’t have to always be bad for us. We can make it bad for somebody else.

“I think that we’ve realized that and we’ve said it and it’s echoed throughout the meeting rooms and things that we’re good. I think that’s a difference is just having those leaders tell everybody the way it was and the way it is now.”

I love the dawgs, but they’ll never be a great team until they get their O line and D line strong and heavy and deep. There’s no excuse for having to move around tackles and guards and especially centers. That’s why you never know which UGA team will show up. Consistancy and strength in the trenches. Gotta have it.

Agree with Bill… this is a CMR problem that I wish e would address. Just playing focused and to 90% of our ability, with a dose of good coaching and game planning tossed in weekly should net UGA 10 wins per season, with 8-9 being convincing wins…(i.e. bama style…average game score 40-8)

Then a little extra juice or motivation for 2- big games per season puts us in position to win championships…. Instead we are saying we need t have the extra juice every week…. for Old Miss and UK.

Only slightly. You guys play at most three teams with a winning record this year. If Ole Miss doesn’t win another game which is possible then that becomes only two opponents with a winning record. Any team in the country would be ranked in the top 10 with that kind of schedule. Its pretty similar to the over inflated Boise St rankings of recent years.

My biggest concern is the fast-paced offense Ole Miss runs and the way the UGA defense isn’t set until the last second. Hopefully Grantham will have an answer to that, though even Alabama wasn’t set on a lot of plays, causing Saban to question whether the rules should be changed to allow defenses to be set before the offense snaps the football.

Until that happens, defenses need to be prepared for a wild ride.

Go Dawgs!

Every Senior or Junior going out early better comprehend that you only have THREE more games at Sanford Stadium or in Athens. Has that sunk in, yet. The other two are away games and any Post season play will be played away,so why wouldn’t we expect to see the defense that we got in Jacksonville and why wouldn’t it motivate the offense to play their best ball. If this game was on the road I would be worried but in Athens should only be a showcase for the rest of the season.

GTBob,

“They couldn’t run the ball against LSU or SC either.” Seriously dude? God you’re an idiot.

Florida was Averaging 233 yds rushing coming into this weekends game. That was good for 2nd in the SEC.

Driskel and Gillisee combined for over 100 yds rushing against Scarolina. 5 other Florida players in that game rushed for double digit yards. Did you watch the game?

Against LSU Florida ran for 176 yds on the ground. Gillisee had 136 himself. If you watched the game, and obviously you didnt, you would have seen Florida physically manhandle LSU in the second half. We STUFFED them! Give UGA credit. We physically whipped them up front on both sides of the ball.

So there. I gave you factual statistical evidence. It’s in black and white.

Now here’s the part where you give me your convoluted bizarro response from the other dimension where you and a lot of the Tech faithful reside.

No I didn’t but according to the official box score for the game Driskel had -5 yards rushing and Gillislee had 37 yards rushing. The whole team had 89 yards rushing on 48 carries. So im not really sure where you are getting your numbers from.

Against LSU they had 176 yards rushing on a whopping 58 carries. That results in an amazing average of 3 yards a carry.

Lol. Here we go with the twisted logic. Rushing for 176 yds doesn’t count if it takes 58 carries? So in your bizarro delusional world, how many fewer attempts did they need to have for you to consider it a good rushing performance? 10? 20? 14? Where I come from 176 yds is 176 yds. That’s an ass kicking Vs one of the top 5-10 defenses in the country jackass.

BTW They had 81 yds on 41 carries Vs UGA. I’m not really sure where that fits into your bass- ackwards point of view. That’s a shot btw. I don’t really want you to try to explain.

Ok, if you think only needing 58 carries to get 176 yards is impressive then more power to you. Having no passing game whatsoever and running the ball every play and getting hardly anything is very impressive. By the way, LSU gave up 188 yards on 40 carries to an FCS school the week before that.

GTBob, LSU is ranked 3rd in total defense. Behind Alabama and FSU. South Carolina is 13th. So you would expect rushing yard as being hard to come by against those folks. (Florida is 6th in total defense).

WOW…just saw replay of GA-FLA game (couldn’t watch Sat)…man, does Aaron Murray SUCK at QB…I mean, the guy is absolutely clueless…and as far as I can see from the game replay, the Dogs sure don’t have much to feel good about–they sucked, FLA sucked worse; this team has a LONG way to go to be able to beat a true top-tier team.

DawgFaithful

I don’t care what they did against an FCS team in 1 meaningless game. What does that have to do with your stupid statement? They are a top 10 defense PERIOD. You said FL couldn’t run on them. They ran for 176 yds PERIOD. You were wrong PERIOD. Yes, I consider that very impressive to line up 58 times and run for 176 yds when a top 10 defense knows what’s coming and you’re still able to run the ball down their throat. That’s physically wearing someone down until you whip them. Yous hould be familiar with that. That’s what Paul the Genious Johnson trys to do. It took 58 carries to do it because LSU is a top 10 defense. They’re averageing 233 yds on the ground Bob. It didn’t take 58 carries VS lesser opponents. Just the ones with top 10 D’s. We can go round and round Bob. Stop trying to twist reality. Outside of being a Tech fan, reality isn’t that bad. You should give it a shot. Go away Bob. You’re hopeless.

Well, we will agree to disagree then. Averaging 3 yards a carry isn’t very impressive to me no matter who you are playing and I certainly wouldn’t call it running the ball down someones throat. If you are getting three yards a play then you are punting an awful lot. Florida struggled to rush against Texas A&M also. They don’t have a very good rushing attack against decent teams.

Give GTBob a break, guys. As a Tech fan he lives vicariously through UF the same way some of us lived vicariously through FSU (I admit it) during the darkest days of losing to Florida in the 90s.

I think his main point is that UGA was merely the beneficiary of a bad Florida performance and we were lucky to win. So what, concede the point. Who cares? I hope he makes the same arguments next year and the next year after that. Hopefully in a couple of years he’ll be griping about UGA’s incredibly unimpressive 4-game winning streak over Florida.

I think it’s the “win” part of the equation that has him confused. That’s not really how GT rolls these days, so they’re sort of orientated towards looking for moral victories. Let them.

A healthy Jarvis makes believers out of all of them and to go forward with their ears pinned back……I like others express real concern with Murray at the helm….He can look like a pro in a game(not top 10 ranked ) and then look like a deer in the headlights when playing better competition….If it is confidence he needs(after 2 3/4 years starting), he is probably not going to get it with the Ole Miss or even GT games coming up, must less a SEC final game. There are regulars on this site who throw around the term “Haters” as if they are the only true dog lovers and that legitimate critism of Coach Rich , or his inability to get the players to have any consistency in their play, is hate speech.. Many of the dog fans expressing their concern for the obvious inconsistency and lack of effort b y some of the players, have been ardent dog fans for longer than some of their critics have been alive, and love the dogs just as much.
The victory over the Gators raise as many concerns as happy relief, since it also highlights the lack of effort in most games this year. The failure to inspire or lead the dogs to strong efforts is on the coaches as well as the players. Anyone who does not see this has never played the game at even the high school level. You have bloggers on this site who played the game at the highest leval and want to see good effort, win or lose, every game. Are we haters because we want a championship as much as Florida,. Alabama and LSU fans and think it is not unreasonable to think that winning one in 1942 and again not until 1980 and none since is too long a wait. If wining is not the object of the game, tear down the score board or demphasize like the University of Penn. did years ago. .I like the values ofCoach Rich and the way the players love him and we do not have to worry about scandles. When was the last time you remember seeing a good well played GA FL game? In recent years they have always been trash, Knock down drag out defensive games with many turnovers and penalties. They do not like each other. It was not like this was Vandy and GA or FIU and Georgia…Possibly Aaron Murray had a bad game because of the UF defense. Possibly the Fl QB had a bad game because of the GA defense. Some of the media stories are presented like they were on file somewhere in your sports library and you just changed the dates, names, or teams in the reports. The Dawgs that show up will probably be in between the Kentucky game Dawgs and the UF game Dawgs. Ole Miss has a good offense and it will require some plays to slow them down. I think we will be able to run the ball on them unless they stack the line. If they throw 8 in the box then we will see another 300-400 yard passing game from Murray. They are chippy, like Vandy was last year. I think the intensity will be enough to keep the game in hand. It might not be 28-7 at the half or something like that but the Dawgs should win going away.

But they have been putting up close to 30 points a game, and have, except for TEX, held opponents to around 30 points (T A&M to 30, ALA to 33 @ ALA). They also scored 14 against ALA. With the supposed talet level that UGA has, we should not have to “GET UP” to handle Old Miss. That again seems to be the problem with UGA for the past several years…We are expeced to GET UP, when we really just need to develop a focus and discipline to maintan a levell of play that would be expected of our talent level and ability…

BAMA….. Are they ” GETTING UP” for every game??? They have beaten Old Mis, UT, MSU, MO, and Arky by an average score of 40 -8. Are they “Getting UP” for every game or are they simply playing focused and disciplined and doing a good job of scoutin their opponent and game planning??

Now Bama will GET UP for LSU… you can bet your arse… They GOT UP for Michigan in the opener with all the hype…. but otherwise they just play sound smart football.

In addition, out coach has basically said that he doesnt know if they will be up or not….. suggested that the press maybe do something to get them up with an insulting article??? What the YELL???

We should win 8-9 games a year just playing at a focused normal level and these wins should all be convincing… Similar to Bama’s 40-8 margin over their opponents thus far this year. Then save the “GETTING UP” for the 2-3 big games…… I agree that if it takes some major motivation to get thru 11-12 ballgames a season, your team has a problem.

I hope that Grantham has finally found out what works with this Defense and the 3-4. If Georgia’s defense dominates and we win 38-10 , something like that then I see Georgia giving Alabama or L.S.U. all they can handle in the Championship game and we will beat GT by at least three touchdowns.

Is CFN aware that Jarvis is healthy now. Our disappointing series of games (UT-SC-UK) all came while Jarvis was well under 100%.

If they don’t play we’ll you have to blame the coaches. If they do play well…credit both players n coaches.

You should be ashamed to use that handle.

We won’t be scared. We won’t be intimidated. We will fight for 60 minutes. Yea, ya’ll should win….but that’s why they play the games.

I think Shultz called UGA an undeciperable team. There is good reason for that title. Every year … people try to figure out who UGA really is and if they will ever “put it together”. But one thing is always clear, with those athletes, when they occasionally put it together, no one in America can beat them. I’m thinking the last time every facet of the game was played with excellence, it was against Hawaii.

@ GTBob – I find it interesting that you actually acknowledge that georgia tech football sucks while most techies refuse to acknowledge this fact to any UGA fans. Now, I will explain our victory over Florida…our team came out ready to fight a very formidable opponent in a classic and brutally physical SEC game and we were fortunate to come out the victor in a game that could have gone either way. It was not a high scoring game of wide open non physical tackling that you often see in other conferences, but a helluva fight in the trenches where it is damn hard to protect the football. There were bodies going down left and right…some for a play or two and others for the rest of the game/season. I expect the same thing in the SEC championship against Bama or LSU if UGA plays determined enough to beat our remaining two SEC opponents, a second tier team, and a tech team that can salvage their entire season/program by upsetting UGA. It ain’t never as easy as some fans like to make it seem to win in the SEC, and there are at least five SEC teams (bama, uga, florida, LSU, South Carolina) that would have easily cake walked over the ACC and several other conferences this year! That is why everyone who truly understands and analyzes college football objectively concedes that the SEC continues to play at a higher level than any other conference and why nearly ALL of the national champions come from the SEC in the last decade. Hopefully for your team and conference this might all change someday, but probably not anytime soon.

There were 9 turnovers and 24 penalties for 227 yards. That wasn’t a classic and brutal game. It was a game between two undisciplined teams who were more concerned with talking trash and getting personal foul penalties then they were with actually winning. If you want to pretend it was a clash of the titans like last years LSU/Bama game then more power to you but it wasn’t. Georgia played slightly less bad then Florida and that’s how they won. Neither of the two teams are real top 10 teams.

I’d like to have confidence in The Dawgs to follow up that UF win with another one against arguably the most improved SEC Team that has had the toughest schedule – that being Ole Miss.

Hugh Freeze is a great coach and will have The Rebels jacked up and juiced though I don’t think they’ll need it.

On paper The Dawgs win this one by 10 points or more. But Ole Miss is for real and if our O does not come alive this week and the D does not play like last week then there could be an upset.

If JJ plays anything like last week we’ll hold ‘em strong. But Murray has to pass better and the receivers have to catch a pass that hits ‘em in the numbers.

The O Line (again) has to begin to step up and open holes or pass block. Still waiting on that.

Another thing Ole Miss has going for them is that we have Bobo as OC…….again.

I would serve up a heavy dose of Gurley, Marshall, and Malcome, topped off with 10, maybe 15 tosses around the backfield, slants, mostly short stuff. Control the ball, clock, and the Ole Miss defense. With that plan I would predict 35-14 Dawgs.

GT Bob:

While I agree that this is a historically weak Georgia schedule, I disagree that any team could be in the top 10 by playing it. I’m not sure tech could beat TN or MO and Vandy would be a tough test for tech as well.

Georgia was supposed to play #1 AL in Tusc in game 2 of this season, but the SEC expanded and that game was replaced. They were scheduled to play 3 top 10 teams a the time time UGA played them (FL, USC, AL) and still might be playing BAMA next month.

Next year is a more typical UGA schedule with FL, USC, and add to that Clemson and LSU and it is no cakewalk. It might be an easy schedule this year for UGA, but tech would certainly not be able to navigate it.

We don’t have to worry about playing down because in fact Ole Miss is decent. Dawgs will be pumped to play at home. No letdown from the Florida game. Quite the opposite. Will be riding the energy and boosted confidence. Two early touchdowns for Gurley, and the momentum takes the Dawgs to a decisive win. Murray will be much better, no picks and 2-3 TDs.

I hope the team is focused and intense for each game the rest of the season.
For some reason, we can come out fired up, but not focused.
As CFN rightly noted, we solved the intensity problem against UF, but not the focused part.

We can’t seem to get it together in all phases of the game when it counts.
We beat UF, but we should have blown them out given their six turnovers.
What’s the problem?
