‘Georgia needs to make Florida play from behind’

georgia florida 2012The key to Mark Richt’s Bulldogs pulling an upset in Jacksonville Saturday is starkly illustrated by some halftime numbers from last week’s Florida-South Carolina game.

After two quarters of play, the Gators had a grand total of just 29 yards of offense, 13 of those in the running game, and just two first downs. They also had already been flagged by the officials five times for 64 yards.

And yet Florida led the Gamecocks 21-6 thanks to the scores resulting from three turnovers.

As one sage sports observer I know put it this week, anytime a team has more points than yards, there’s something wrong.

But what’s wrong with the 2012 Florida Gators has been more than countered by what’s right: an aggressive, effective defense that likes to take away the ball and, best of all, superb, opportunistic special teams play. As a result, Florida has become the nation’s No. 2 team despite having merely an adequate offense that is most effective grinding it out on the ground to wear opponents down as the game goes on.

Kyle Christy may be the most dangerous player the Gators have. (Associated Press)

Kyle Christy may be the most dangerous player the Gators have. (Associated Press)

The Gators’ best and most effective player is punter Kyle Christy, the NCAA leader whose 50-plus-yard boomers often flip the field and keep opponents bottled up deep in their own territory.

So, what are the keys to a Georgia win over Florida?

No. 1 definitely is protecting the ball (especially on punt and kickoff returns) because, as Richt noted this week, winning the turnover margin has been Florida’s “formula for success,” and the Gators have only turned the ball over four times this season.

The other key for the Dogs was nicely summed up this week by a friend who’s a Gamecock fan: “Georgia needs to make Florida play from behind.”

In other words, the Dogs need to get an early lead so that Florida’s run-oriented offense is taken out of its comfort zone and Gators QB Jeff Driskel has to try throwing it more in catch-up mode. Mike Bobo needs to come out fast and furious, running his entire playbook: Mix the run and pass and don’t be afraid to test the Gators secondary deep early.

Aaron Murray has to come up big for Georgia to win over Florida. (Associated Press)

Aaron Murray has to come up big for Georgia to win over Florida. (Associated Press)

Basically, if Georgia is going to win this game, it’s going to be with the arm of Aaron Murray, who almost single-handedly beat Kentucky last week.

But even that probably won’t be enough if Todd Grantham’s defense doesn’t turn it around and play its best game since Mizzou. The Georgia front seven that has underperformed all season needs to contain Gators running back Mike Gillislee and, more importantly, Driskel, who is one of those running quarterbacks the Dogs tend to have trouble handling. If Grantham’s first-half game plan doesn’t include keeping a spy on Driskel to control those zone-read keepers, any second-half adjustments might be too little too late.

The hope here is that, having had their collective manhood challenged this week by their own Shawn Williams, who’s played the Pat Dye/Sheldon Richardson role in Georgia’s pregame motivation, Grantham’s troops finally will play like last year’s Top 5 defense rather than the “too soft” bunch we’ve seen most of this season.

Williams gigged the Georgia defense for its lack of emotion; if they come out breathing fire at EverBank Field Saturday, perhaps he’ll have earned himself a game ball before the first kickoff.

What do you think of Georgia’s chances in Jacksonville this year? Can the Dogs finally make it two in a row?

If last year’s defense shows up, we will win. Unfortunately, though, except for the Vandy game, that defense has not existed. I expect our defense to be run over and our o-line to be destroyed. So, I guess I expect a result similar to the South Carolina game.

Murray went 15 for 34 last year, 1 td, 0 int’s and Georgia won 24-20. Murray doens’t need to be a hero, just don’t be the goat.

Don’t turn the ball over, and force Florida’s anemic offense to drive 80 yards to beat you. Their offense ranks 102 in total offense, good luck Gators.

For Gators to win:
a) need 3 turnovers
b) need a special teams td
c) need to run for 250 yards

if Gators don’t do all 3, they lose.

The Dawgs can win this game! If it had not been for SC’s turnovers FL would not have won that game. FL’s offense could not sustain a long drive against SC’s defense. I would also go after the punter. If UGA can block a punt, it changes the field position which is huge. Get the job done Dawgs!!! GATA!!!

The lack of a run defense, at least lately, and the effects of high winds on passing accuracy could go badly for our Dawgs. Driskell will have a field day unless our run defense shows up. I expect losses from this coaching staff in the big games, but I always hope for the best. I agree that turnovers will be crucial, but it could be an ugly day for UGA…again. Ugh.

How about some imagination on offense. Let’s see the five wides. Maybe even see Gurley in the QB position with Marshall on one side and Ken Malcome on the other. Run it left, right, up the middle and throw in a few motion plays with Malcolm Mitchell. Got to be more imaginative and unpredicatable.

Ok

( Music City Dawgs) Even without the 21 first half points in the FL vs SC game the score would have been 23 to 11. So tell me how they would have lost? And saying without SC turning over the ball? Half of those fumbles were forced. That is something the Gators have done to everyone. Even LSU….. So you can’t take all the credit from the gators and say all the teams we have played this year have just had bad games when they play Florida. Can you?

Florida has come from behind and won away games. This field is half and half. What makes you think even if Fl gets behind they will lose. FL has shown that they are great under pressure.

If UGA is going to win this game they are going to need to shut down the run…. After what we have seen them do this year… well it doesn’t look good.

For those of us that follow this game every year and remember the upsets that have cost either one of the teams so much. We all know that this game can go either way. No matter how either of the teams have played so far this year. It is FLORIDA GEORGIA!!!

It’s so basic for the Gators. the don’t have to throw the ball against our defense. Mark my words, they will be running the ball between the tackles until our defense can stop them. Look for the gators to have 250+ yards in rushing.
Murray has to have the biggest game of his carrer. Before jumps all over him for losing big games remember that the line has to block for him. He can’t have a career game if he is running for his life or on his back before the play can develope.

Dont force it if we have to punt PUNT and let the defense face a mediocre offensive team. Only way this gets out of hand is turnovers and in recent history close grinding games seem to go to the good guys!

Chuck,

You’re an idiot. We need both TIght Ends in the game and Merritt Hall at Fullback. 5 wide means you have no blocking. Florida front 7 will live in our backfield.

Any chance we have is to protect Murray and establish the run. Our offensive line is depleted, so put in 2 tight ends and the full back and make Florida load the box to stop Gurley. Then hit either A) one of the 2 wide receivers matched up one on one on the outside, or B) one of the 2 tight ends down the middle of the field, or in the flat, or C) full back outta the backfield or D) tailback outta the backfield

If we are gonna win in the SEC, we gotta run power football. Use the tight ends to bolster the line and keep the linebackers honest. Run the football out of power formations behind the fullback… not 4 wide receiver spread draw.

I’m not saying you can’t mix it up, but you have to establish the time of possession and eat clock. Ball Control… Keep your defense resting and their offense on the sideline. Wear down their defense. Shorten the game. Spread passing cant do any of that.

Please forward to Mike Bobo…

Go Dawgs!

No reason to believe everything we’ve seen so far magically disappears. UGA has not won this year in the trenches, especially on defense, but has had enough good athletes to off-set that liability. Not against good teams, though. Not against SC, and not against FL. Add special team mishaps, Murray’s long proven inability to lead the team to the big win, and our coaching staff’s general bewilderment, then only a 7 point spread looks mighty surprising.

I agree with everyone screaming for the TE’s… we need to run 2 TE formations to open off tackle runs. If we get the Gators safeties biting on the run we can beat them deep. Balance and ball protection… we have to be efficient and not flashy. We have to run the ball. No, we aren’t going to get 70 yard runs on them but if we can get at least 3 yards virtually every time we run it and very few or no lost yardage plays, we can win the time of possession and force UF out of their SOP. If UF is not allowed to run the ball (IE: forced to pass) and ground and pound it in the 4th quarter… they lose. The key is getting a lead and not sitting on it. If it is working then keep doing it no matter what the score is. Muschamp is great at making adjustments… so anticipate what he will do to stop us if we have early success. When he makes the adjustments go to plan B. But don’t give up on the run. Our pass game is based on the threat of a running game. If UF is allowed to sit on the routes it will be ugly.
That said… if the Dawgs don’t win this game then CMR and staff are gone. The potential of this team VS results would be too out of whack to not change regime.

Establish the run early and often. Aaron Murray’s stats against Kentucky were great but let’s keep things in perspective. Those numbers came against a young inexperienced secondary. The key in this series has always been the running game. I also feel by establishing the run it allows our offensive lineman to be the aggressor. I believe on occasion Gurley and Marshall should be in the backfield at the same time just to give the defense a different look from time to time. I read an article about spring practice where one player stated that Keith shook two or three players on one run which brings me to my next opinion. What about more screen passes and toss sweeps to Marshall which allows him to shake two or three Gators on his way to a long run or two or three! The passing game will be there but by establishing the run and allowing our lineman to get their engine revved up will give Aaron and his receivers more open looks. Go Dawgs!!!!!!

I agree with Outer Banks Dawg, but I really don’t see Bobo utilizing two tight ends. I could not for the life of me figure out why we didn’t do that against Carolina. Clowney dominated Gates all night! Why not bring in a two tight end set? And yes, use the fullback! We need protection for Murray badly. But like I said, I don’t think that is in Bobo’s game plan, unfortunately.

This game will be won up front, on both sides of the ball. If our OL can’t control the line of scrimmage, we lose. If our DL can’t control the line of scrimmage, we lose. Plain and simple. I really hope our big boys, Big John and Kwame on DL and Theus, Gates, and crew on OL, can step it up and dominate these Florida boys. This is the most physical Florida team I’ve seen in a few years. We’ve got to be just as physical or more. GATA!!!

If Florida wins, it will be because Muschamp’s pattern for the FL program is the same as Saban’s at AL, hit ‘em in the mouth early and be the more physical team. Shawn was correct about the defense playing soft, but the same thing can be said about all areas of a Richt coached team. That’s the reason we have not beat a ranked team in like…forever! Over the next ten years we may be 100 – 0 against the patsies, but we will have an 0-fer in the games that matter. Just being real.

You will get a chance to see if the coaches you so despise can actually win the big one. And if they don’t then you get your justifiable wish. But if they win… well there would be no reason to can them, would there? If you are a real Bulldog fan that is what you really want… the big win to get a crack at an even bigger win. After this season which in my opionion has already been blown thanks to our Top 10 paid coaching staff. The next 4 years are going to be down years

I knew this would happen but I kept hoping that maybe just maybe with the easy schedule and the amount of NFL talent this year we just might finally break through and get a shot but once again this coaching staff showed us they are never prepaired and their 10 win seasons against cupcakes are due to the overriding talent we have every year

Georgia is in the top two or three states in the country when it comes to high school talent. UGA is in the top two or three schools in the country when it comes to putting players in the NFL. Yet, we can’t dominate anybody, even the cupcakes, and we don’t challenge for championships. What could possibly be the problem?

Summary: It could be a blow out with a bunch of turnovers. It could be close if turnovers are kept to a minimum (say ONE) or it could be an upset if turnovers are completely eliminated along with all other blunders like untimely penalties. In other words the DAWGS must be error free to win and that’s not easy – but not impossible. On the other hand, if the Lizards have REPTILE dysfunction such as turnovers and other blunders UGA will win. End of summary….. have a good day and GO DAWGS!

SC Dog Fan has it right. If only the dawgs D can play a complete game like the 1st half of the SECCG vs LSU (forget the 2d half) when they shut down LSU completely they have a chance against FL if the OL comes thru w/run blocking and pass protection. Both were missing in the SC game. No T/O’s at all and create a few for themselves. Get an early lead and play solid D. Only way dawgs will beat FL is don’t give the game away as they often do when they play FL. GA can win but it’ll take a game they’ve not played to date.

In recent years where UF was the underdog, or at least team struggling somewhat going into this game, both zook and meyer (especially 2003, 2005, 2010) had always come up with some new wrinkle to either their offensive or defensive scheme, or both.

With UGA coming in as the underdog and nationally recognized team as having more to prove……I’d love to see UGA come out with some new scheme or plays that we’ve yet to show this year. In the end however, I know Richt and Bobo too well, there will be nothing new brought and the team will likely come out stale……as it has the last 5 years.

Have you ever tried to fix a problem and after you beat your brains out, someone comes in and fixes it quickly? It’s not because you are stupid… it’s because they have a different perspective. @Flat Tire On I-95 in Jacksonville, the statement that “UGA has put more players in the NFL than any other SEC school since 2001″ MIGHT be true (you’re tied with LSU for most currently active players), but your players are more evenly distributed over the period. The second half of the last decade has really belonged to the Gators, LSU and Bama.

For example, roughly two dozen Gators from the 2006 and 2008 NC teams are in the NFL now. I can’t remember UGA having a year where a dozen players got drafted.

You do have a lot of elite talent on your defense. But I haven’t seen any evidence that you have the same depth that Florida, Bama and LSU have. Florida is stronger and better conditioned this year, but they are also liberally rotating in the number 2s on the D line.

It would be an advantage to have Florida’s defense line up behind Georgia’s quarterback. However, even if the Gators agreed to this unique stipulation, I don’t think that the officials would allow it.

Still… Kudos for thinking outside the box!

Reality

October 25th, 2012

I can’t argue your numbers; I was looking at “currently active” lists, which show a substantially different pattern (Alabama 30, Florida 31, LSU 37, Georgia 37). If your point is that Richt and his staff(s) have done less with more, that’s certainly true.

On the other hand, you can look at your own numbers above and it looks like there’s probably a tipping point for a championship-caliber team that’s somewhere around eight draftable players in a class. I don’t have any point; it’s just a curious observation when you look at your numbers above.

Reality

October 25th, 2012
5:48 pm

The key to success for both teams is probably “weathering the storm”. In Florida’s case, it’s withstanding a possible onslaught of deep balls from Murray. In Georgia’s case, it’s hanging onto the football with a bunch of guys swarming you who put in a lot of practice time and emphasis on stripping it away.

I like to think I’m a pretty realistic Gator fan, but honestly I don’t see Georgia having much of a chance in this one. Georgia hasn’t played anyone but SC and we all know what happened. FL has played a tough schedule so far and seems to get better and better.

This Gator team is built like any other we have seen. Tough as nails and will beat you down until they take over the game.

Aside from all of that, all of the Gator strengths go agains GA weaknesses; tough running game vs. poor run defense, overachieving upstart vs. underachieving favorites, great run defense for the gators vs. poor rushing output for the dawgs. The one GA strenght; the passing game, faces a tough FL secondary and a relentless pass rush.

I’m sorry, but bearing something unforseen you guys are in big trouble. It’s too bad in a way since Mark Richt seems like a nice enough guy, I sort of feel bad for him.

Game will be close until late in the 2nd quarter. That’s when Aaron becomes Errin and throws a pick 6 that changes the entire game in Florida’s favor. Gators will dominate on both sides of the ball in the 2nd half and GA, finally, will realize it’s time to prepare Mark Richt for his retirement party at the end of the season. Forget about the effect on this season’s class of recruits….don’t want to hear it….we have had great classes of recruits since Richt arrived and yet the product on the field simply = GREAT POTENTIAL, but MEDIOCRE RESULTS. Even our Sugar Bowl victory is hollow to some degree b/c it had no bearing on the National Championship and came against a woefully outmatched Hawaii team.

agree 100% that Georgia needs to get the lead early in the game. That is easier said than done since South Carolina and Kentucky made it look pretty easy to score touchdowns on Georgia on their first posession. I would be shocked if FL does not score a TD on their first drive.

The only way we don’t completely abandon the running game as we have done this season when the going gets tough… is if we have a good lead or if the weather conditions are so bad that throwing isn’t really an option.

Bobo and Richt give lip service to being committed to the run, but they really aren’t. They think pass first and we will line up in the shotgun and thow the ball around unless we are averating 8 yards a carrry on our first 5-6 totes.

Sandy ,

I hope you are right that the Gators have to do all that to win. Unfortunately, I think all they have to do is

1) run the ball up the middle
2) chuck it deep occassionally
3) If they do get in 3rd and 10 or 15, just have the QB run to pick up the easy first down or even just hand the ball off on a draw play and it should go be enough to move the chains.
4) pounce on our punt return/kickoff return mistakes
5,) defensively, all the Gators need to do is load the box against the run as this will put Georgia in the shotgun formation for the rest of the game, even if the defense backs off. Bobo and Murray will be in throw mode and Georgia will abandon the running game completely.

Basically, I think all Florida has to do is play a solid game, not turn it over, and if they get in 3rd and long a QB sneak should get them the first down.

Agree that 6-1 is a good place to be (normally). HOWEVER, and this is very important…. this is the best combination of easy schedule and talented and experienced roster that UGA will see for another 15 to 20 years. This is the time to do something special. Auburn has their worst team in a decade, TN ain’t exactly the 90’s juggernaut, Alabama game in Tuscaloosa cancelled and replaced with Missouri, Vandy and a KY team that will go ‘OFER in the SEC. A tech team that isn’t exactly reminding anyone of the 1950’s version. Three cupcakes. Not one cupcake, not two of them, three glorified punching bags scheduled. A Florida team with the worst offense they have had in 25 years (though they have a good defense and know how to win games), and a South Carolina team that isn’t exactly the 85 Bears.

This is a historically weak schedule and we have a Three year starter at QB (on paper the best in the SEC). We have as good a running back rotation as anyone in the SEC, probably the deepest receiving group, and a defense with all juniors and seniors 9 of whom are slated to go in the NFL (though they are playing like a group of 3 star Sophmores to date).

If not NOW, WHEN? If Richt can’t have a special season under these conditions, when do you see it happening again when we start playing Clemson, LSU, Bama and then Auburn, TN, and Florida return to their normal? Any championships coming then?

Wouldn’t we be 5-2 and out of the SEC race already if we didn’t get a reprieve with the Alabama game being cancelled? Could we have won in Tuscaloosa with the effort we gave in Columbia, MO?

I-DOG I agree with almost everything you said except that it is the worst Fl offense in 25 years; that would be last years team with Phat Charlie Weis as the OC and a QB that missed 4 games and played the rest of the season (including the Jax game) with basically 1 leg. The offense this year is scoring what it needs to win and man handling teams in the 2nd half.

Even in the late 80’s, Dooley had some awfully physical teams. Sure, UGA couldn’t pass well and our corners were usually sub par, but I remember Munson saying “Lemont Tellis and Todd Wheeler are BURYING PEOPLE!!!). That was against TN in 1987.

When will our offensive line BURY someone. Tough to do when you are taking three steps back in pass coverage 9-10 snaps in a row.

UGA isn’t more talented than EVERYONE in the SEC every year. However, they are way more talented than every team they play this year other than USC and Florida. I think any neutral evaluator of talent would agree that UGA is at LEAST even with FL and USC and above KY, Vandy, Buffalo etc…

I’m sure we will win 8-9 games this year, but honestly what coaching staff couldn’t with this roster and this schedule? Cut the coaching budget by 90% and give me $400,000 to $500,000 to hire an entirely new coaching staff before the last Spring practice started and I could give you a coaching staff that could have won 8 games this year.

Based on what I saw against South Carolina and on past games against really good Florida teams, I’ll just be happy if we don’t soil our pants when UF takes the field. Just man up and fight for 60 minutes and I’ll be happy.

CMR keys to victory…plug up wholes on leaky defense, use both arms to tackle, teach DBs not to bite on play action, don’t leave giant wholes for FL qb to run through on busted plays, teach o-line to block and pass protect, start over on special teams, again, don’t throw pick sixes, etc. Am I leaving anything out? Don’t mean to be so cynical fellow dawg fans but these mistakes are repeated game after game and year after year and are manifested all the more against ranked opponents. Here’s hoping these issues don’t make the trip down to Jax with the team. If our seldom seen A game doesn’t show up then get ready for a repeat of the SC post game radio show with the same pitiful embarrassing mantra from our leader.

So one of the Bulldog players tweeted about rushing the field again after a touchdown? In a nutshell, that’s everything that is wrong with Georgia football.

By the way, your last best hope at an outside shot at winning this game –an exceptional passing performance by Murray– is apparently going to be obliterated by the weather.

This is a very special Gator team having a very special season, and windy, weird weather is only going to favor their brutally physical style. Suggest you Dawg fans bring a change of clothes for the drive home.

@tell me again, yeah, just like you had a better offense than South Carolina and your D was just as good if they played.

Your defense is actually not better than Florida’s, and yardage against cream puff opponents early in the season says nothing about your offense. Your quarterback is a great passer, but so is Tyler Bray. Bray was muttering to himself after the Florida game. Your offensive line is actually not that good.

And you left out Florida’s deadly weapon: special teams. UGA doesn’t belong on the same field with Florida when it comes to special teams.

Snoop is prepared to see his beloved Dawgs get a historical beatdown. First, expect at least one turnover just from our coachless special teams. Special teams play at UGA is a bad joke.
Next, look for 5′11″ Aaron Murry to choke and throw at least one pic-6 as he always does against good teams. Add in a fumble by one of the freshman Gurshalls, then add the completely inept and indifferent defense and you have a recipe for disaster.

Pat Dye once observed that Georgia wasn’t “man enough” to be Alabama. That was five years ago. The Dawgs have regressed even further from the ideal during that time.

Prepare for another embarrassing beatdown on national TV in prime time.

The key to this game is not to go fast in the first half but to slow this gam down and make it close and to go fst in the final eighteen minutes and make FL paly fast in the second half. If anyone has watched the Gators play this year they ahve been even or behind at halftime andmade adjustment at half. UGA needs to make them have to play fst in the forth quater when they traditionally want to grind the game down. Driskell needs to be forced to throw in the forth quater to win. Ig UGA gets out fast and doesn’t maintain that it doesn’t matter. Teh sissue is forcing FL to throw in the forth quater to win.

CMR: Hey guys what time is it?
CMB: It’s 3 minutes before kick off coach
CMR: Okay lets make this quick… Hey big guy I’ve got something for ya!
CTG: What is it coach?
CMR: (Throws a big white towel to Grantham)
CTG: Wow Coach! My own personal towel… it’s gota black oval “G” on it… Your the best coach!
CMR:Thought of a new wrinkle when sending out defensive signals and other signals to our players.
CTG: What do ya mean coach?
CMR: Well we will have one of our scrubbs holding up the towell in front of you when you give the choke sign and other signals. This should throw off the gators throughout the game and mess with their psyche. It should keep them guessing when you are or are not giving the choke sign.
CTG: Wow coach that is brilliant!
CMR: I know…. that is why they pay me the BIG bucks.
CMR: Hey Bobo, Florida thinks we will run the ball more so what is your plan?
CMB: Im thinking only if we get into third and long situations. Im going back to the draw.
CMR: Sounds like a plan!
CMR: Hey Garner…. get over here I’ve got something for you too.
CRG: Okay coach what it is?
CMR: Well McGarrity didnt allow recruits to attend the game. I already went ahead and ordered bucket loads of KFC for them. They are on ice in the locker room. You can have them if you want and you can share some with Todd.
CRG: Man…. coach this is like early Thanksgiving!
CMR:Yeah I know …. the holidays are quickly approaching and we already got a bowl game locked up somewhere. So all of you need to just relax. Our Bonuses should be about ready to kick in too after those contract extensions from last spring.
CRG: Coach Richt you are the best! I dont care what our fans say or think.
CMR: Well I’ve got to fix my hair and put on my shades…see you fella’s on the sidelines.

Could you imagine a Georgia vs Florida football game in which every gator possession ended in either a lost fumble, or a pass interception? How about a game where the Dawg defense literally shut the door against an opponent holding them to 0 first downs, and negative yardage in all three phases of the game?

Could you imagine a Georgia vs Florida football game in which every Georgia possession ended in a touchdown? What if every pass was a completion, and the team lost not one fumble? How about a game where the team was so focused that it failed to commit a single penalty?

Wouldn’t you love to see a Georgia vs Florida football game that was such an impressive display of teamwork, and Dawg Domination that Kirk Herbstreit and Lee Corso were left totally speechless? How about a game of such notoriety that the American college football world would go out of its way to find the replay to watch the total destruction of the nations number 2 ranked team, while at the same time, see UGA set a SEC and NCAA, single game record, for missed P A T attempts?

Now, I don’t know about you, but I could, certainly, live with that!
