Georgia coaching staff’s fix-it list is a mile long

Georgia's defense had difficulty handling Jonathan George and other Kentucky runners. (Associated Press)

Georgia's defense had difficulty handling Jonathan George and other Kentucky runners. (Associated Press)

Some more thoughts and observations from Georgia’s win over Kentucky and looking ahead to the showdown with Florida …

Mark Richt’s Bulldogs have a lot of problems that need addressing before the game in Jacksonville, but the three biggest ones are a continuing problem defending the run, the deteriorating performance of the offensive line (and its effect on Georgia’s own running game) and the disaster that is UGA’s special teams play most of the time.

I’ve heard a lot of discussion in the past 24 hours over whether it was another faulty Todd Grantham game plan that was responsible for the Georgia defense’s terrible showing right out of the gate against the Wildcats, or whether the blame lies largely with the players, most of whom haven’t yet lived up to their preseason press clippings and have failed to put together a complete half (let alone a game) playing as a team.

I’m inclined to think it’s a bit of both. We’ve seen too many first-half offensive surges by lesser teams this season (not to mention an outright offensive blitz by the one good team we’ve played) for Georgia’s highly-paid defensive coordinator to be let off the hook. Even if it’s not the game plan itself that is lacking, Grantham appears to be doing a very poor job of getting his troops ready.

But, yes, the bottom line is the players aren’t getting it done. Even after Grantham made adjustments in the second half to slow down Kentucky’s suddenly potent running game (which the rest of the conference probably would tell you must have been a mirage), it appeared the Cats temporarily losing Jalen Whitlow to a migraine had more to do with Big Blue getting off track. When Whitlow returned in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats were able to grind out another long touchdown drive.

True, the Dogs still won the game, as the Georgia coaching staff was repeatedly reminding everyone Saturday night. And there were individual efforts worth applauding, including those of Jordan Jenkins and Kwame Geathers.

But the larger picture is what has the Bulldog Nation disturbed: A Bulldogs defense that gives up 206 yards on the ground to the worst rushing offense in the conference doesn’t look well-positioned to halt Florida’s not-flashy-but-effective grind-it-out ground attack.

And the defense’s poor showing when the Cats had third-and-long was so disturbing that even amid all the positive spin emerging from the Georgia locker room Saturday night Grantham noted, “I didn’t think we played the third-down runs well and we need to clean that up.”

Todd Gurley and the rest of Georgia's rushing attack was largely ineffective against the Wildcats. (Associated Press)

Todd Gurley and the rest of Georgia's rushing attack was largely ineffective against the Wildcats. (Associated Press)

On the other side of the ball, Aaron Murray and Georgia’s passing game looked sharp, but that was against a secondary that can’t hold a candle to Florida’s. And the continued poor play of the offensive line, after some encouraging performances against midlevel opposition earlier in the season, is distressing. Georgia simply hasn’t had an effective rushing attack the past two games, and that largely falls on the blockers. Throw in three sacks of Murray and several false-start penalties and Will Friend’s unit just barely rates a passing grade for its effort in Lexington.

And then there’s the clown car of college football known as Georgia’s special teams. Saturday night, even Richt was cracking wise about placekicker Marshall Morgan’s continuing troubles, noting: “He’s hit the upright more than anybody in the nation, I would think. He probably set a school record for that.”

The Dogs’ dire kicking game is no joking matter, though. Since Richt has chosen not to even have an overall special teams coordinator, much less a special teams coach (or to take the job on himself, as some head coaches do), there’s no one to work with Morgan on solving his problems. Maybe someone should at least get him on the phone with Georgia kicking legend Kevin Butler, who noted on the Saturday night and Sunday Bulldog call-in shows that bad form in how Morgan approaches the ball is likely to blame.

And then there’s Georgia’s apparent inability to come up with a plan for fielding punts. After finally settling on Rhett McGowan as the deep man receiving punts for the Dogs, Richt and company still haven’t been able to get the message through that whenever possible you have to actually catch the ball, rather than let it hit the ground and take your chances on where it’s downed.

With the Dogs facing one of the nation’s best punters this coming week in Florida’s Kyle Christy, fixing this should be a top priority for the UGA coaching staff. On this matter I’ll again defer to Butler, whose son Drew just finished a terrific stint as the Dogs’ punter and is now making a living punting in the NFL. The elder Butler thinks Georgia needs to once again start putting two deep men back on punts to make sure the ball is caught.

The one bright spot in Georgia’s special teams play Saturday was Connor Norman’s Johnny-on-the-spot recovery of that on-side kick by the Cats. If he hadn’t pounced on that ball, the Dogs probably would no longer be in the SEC East race.

What’s especially alarming is that Florida’s special teams play has been as terrific as Georgia’s has been lacking. Against South Carolina the Gator special teams helped produce points by forcing turnovers and making long returns.

So much to fix and so little time. Should Georgia simply run up the white flag and concede the Florida game? Of course not. Lesser Richt teams have somehow managed to pull off upsets of highly rated opponents (if you go back a few years, admittedly).

But as Georgia QB Murray put it, “We know we have to play an unbelievable game offensively, defensively and on special teams if we want to have a chance to win that game.”

Even then, it’s probably going to take the Gators finally stumbling and turning in a poor performance to make Bulldog fans’ dreams of two in a row in Jacksonville come true.

Non native. I got suckered in to rooting for the Dawgs while living in GA. I go to a game or two a year. Tired of under performing teams. Talent is obviously there. 8-10 defensive players who will be playing on Sunday next year or after. They can’t stop Kentucky. The forecast this weekend is ugly and two to 4 touchdowns gator win. Sick of it. Fire me. I quit.

P-Man: it’ll probably be a rout. If the spread is less than 17 put the house on Florida. I’m a life long UGA fan, Athens native, and UGA alumnus, and I’m getting the same feeling like I did under Goff, like the big games won’t even be competitive. Unbelievable talent with lacking results.

I love the idea of having 2 deep men back to field the punts… The 9 in the box need to play a base defense against the fake and set up a return. Now if we could just get TWO tight ends in the game we would be in business on the O-Line.

How many times did Florida have 2 tight ends in the game against SC? Let me answer, it was a LOT! Full back and 2 tight ends = time to throw and the ability to run the ball.

Plus you have safety valves all over the field. Spread is only good if you have a run threat QB. And then it’s marginal in SEC.

Regarding Defense, stop rushing outside so much on the ends… They are going around the play, which is up inside off tackle… The ends are rushing outside and opening the lanes for the inside runs… And our press coverage is a joke. I have yet to see a corner jam anyone, even when they are supposed to.

Bill, is our coaching staff coachable? Does anyone (you, reporters) ask them about these technical details? I’m no million dollar coach, but I know a little about football. It seems to me we do the same things over and over and expect different results… Time to mix it up?

Go Dawgs!

Georgia has no special teams coordinator? Your kidding! The Gators spend half an hour every practice on special teams and our best players are on the coverage teams.

You might as well forget about the Gators coming out flat. This team just isn’t wired that way. And even if they did, they would still pound you in the second half.

What is the excuse for not having special teams coaches? I mean Blair Walsh cleaned up his kicking when he went to the NFL BECAUSE HE HAD A COACH TO SHOW WHAT WAS GOING WRONG AND HOW TO FIX IT! Could have won our bowl game otherwise. Do any of the sports announcers ever ask Richt that question and if so, does he bypass it with a non-answer? I would like to know the reason. I am tired of the same old answer he gives for everything. And for God’s sake, don’t let Malcolm Mitchell return punts. Lots of talent but immature and not a good decision maker.

I just wish the team would come out pumped up. What happened when Richt did something different and dared his team to get an excessive celebration penalty on the first TD against FL? That’s right, we won and made Tim Tebow cry. They look flat as pancakes when they come on the field now. They lack ENERGY!

You pretty well hit the nail on the head. Team exhibits characteristics of dissension- poor motivation. Whether it is the coaches or the players does not matter. Coaches recruited the players.

Maybe we can just put a blow up of Erk on the sideline and let the blowup call the D. It would be better, or not worse. The Junkyard got its nickname because the OVER ACHIEVED. They got big bowl bids because the fans loved them. That was then and this is now.

Bill, everything you mentioned points to coaching, and it just makes me sick to think there are people out there, and people at Georgia that continue to give this coaching staff, second, third, fourth chances, and so on. Richt will never take Georgia to the heights we dream of, and the ONLY reason we won 10 games last year was because of a week schedule, and the ONLY reason we may win 10 games this year is for the same reason.

I personally have been sick of if for several years now, and unfortunately we will have to put up with this for at least one more year. It is so sad.

We have a problem! IMO even if we win in the line of scrim. we still have problems like special teams. My big concern is that consistant, poor special teams play is a sure sign of discipline problems that tend to expand to other areas. If we turn ball over we are done. The good news is that motivation should not be a probelm(though I still worry about that, too). Gentlemen, I guess it gets down to discipline. Go Dawgs!

We do have some kinks to work out, but people on here are acting like we have Auburn’s record. Are people REALLY talking about firing the coaching staff with a top ten ranking and a 6-1 record?

If the people on this board (and the rest of the AJC boards this weekend) are any indication, UGA has the most entitled, neurotic and deluded fanbase out of any team in the nation.

in 2007, UGA got pounded by Tennessee and skated by Vanderbilt before going into Jacksonville and beating a highly-ranked Florida team, and this team has just as much talent and gumption as that team did. Yeah, Florida’s good, but I’m not willing to give them the game until it’s actually played next week, unlike everyone on here who wants to go ahead and give Florida the victory.

Seriously, fans like the ones on these boards almost make me ashamed to call myself a Dawg. Pathetic.

CMR has playmakers and speedsters that are as good as any team in the Nation. So, when special teams struggle in punt returns what does he do? He calls on a former walk-on whose total talent is he can catch a punt and not make bonehead mistakes because he is smart and is a Dean’s list student. Why not coach up someone who has the athletic ability to make a return? He doesn’t because he takes the easy way out…which means he doesn’t have to coach them up. Time to hit the road Jack and don’t ya come back no more.

A under qualified strength and conditioning coach who’s promotion was supported by an equally under qualified athletic director? Ya’ll create your owm problems. What does Richt do in the off season. Bill,

I think the more aggravating thing about this is that this is not something that has happened in the context of one or two games; or even just this season. We have seen Georgia’s special teams be widely ignored for several seasons and be a comedy of errors. We have not seen a truly solid offensive line in several seasons. And barring last year’s defensive effort, the defense has underperformed for the last several seasons as well.

There is an internal problem in Athens. Why don’t we hire “anyalysts” like at Alabama? Nine people who fall under another title, but are clearly coaches. Why, as Kirk Herbstreit put it during the S.C. game are we so predictable on offense? Why is our defense consistently underperforming?

The coaching staff and the players have to have faith amongst themselves that they can tackle the obstacle known as Florida. But these problems remind me of when fans knew way before the coaching staff did that Mark Richt needed help with clock management and an offensive coordinator. Richt is 112 – 39 in 11 1/2 years at Georgia…pretty remarkable. But at times, this Administration reminds me of Tony Dungy at Tampa Bay. He got them so far and Gruden had to carry it over the finish line. Maybe that’s is where Georgia is now. With so many teams down in the SEC, Georgia should be able to seize on that.

Frankly, I suspect that part of Richt’s problem may be that no top flight coordinators want to work for him because, well, frankly, his just a nice guy with no real fire, sense of discipline, toughness… pick your missing label.

That’s a LONG list of fix ups this late in the season. As was clearly demonstrated in the total distruction of our team against So. Carolina, it finally comes down to coaching. I do not expect a win this week in Jacksonville, and I do not expect a championship from this coaching staff. I love CMR, but he just has not been able to get the job done with all the talent he has. It’s a great disappointment. He should last a while longer before the cries for his departure get too loud. Bill,
I’ve said it before, and will again; you CANNOT win the big games in the SEC with a second-tier o-line. Our guys up front are not the caliber recruits you need to win in the SEC. Lest we forget, the game is STILL won in the trenches. I f Florida has paid any attention to film, etc., they will whip our o-line like a dollar watch in the spin cycle of the washing machine! And they will not have to work that hard to do it……our talent level just is not there. We can make adjustments other places, and we can improve coaching, too. but we simply do nt have the hosses up front to beat the big-boys. S.C., LSU, ‘Bama, and yes….Florida next week will take it to our o-line, point-guard size center and all. And guess what….it is not rocket science or even good coaching. Its just that the better teams know we are weak up there. Until we improve our recruiting efforts (and results) up front, we are gonna get waxed by the better teams….period! And the sad part is, one does not have to be an arm-chair quarterback to see it!

It’s interesting that when the offense struggles is Coach Bobo fault. When they look good, nobody gets credit. When the defense looks good it’s completely to the credit of Coach Grantham, but if they struggle, it’s Coach Richt’s fault.

For so many of you in the “know”, then you should no that do to NCAA regulations on the number of coaches you are allowed you would realize that most teams do not have a Special Teams coach, as we once did during my playing years….With that being said, each school takes a different approach…some share the duties among coaches, others have dual duty coaches such as the TE coach, supplimenting his duties with Special Teams coaching….Now is the way the dawgs do it the best way…perhaps no, but the bottom line is if you hire a full-time special teams coach, then you are sacrificing other position coaches….And yes the dawgs, as do other Div 1 schools have allotted practice times for working on Special Teams…

Its ok to bash and say we should do this, or that, but at least know what you are talking about…Now with all that being said, I am disappointed in the direction of our Special Teams, who are not so special, but we are still young here….The one thing I will add to the argument is, I would think that we could coach up our designated punt returnner to make not only good decisions, but to also find someone that the other team has to be concerned with..We don’t seem to have that right now….go dawgs

I agree with Todd – my to-do list would be short:

Fire Richt.

I don’t care if he DOES have 10 wins over the cupcakes. His team is badly coached and does not play good football. ANYONE can have 10 wins if they play only weak teams. And even some of those weak teams are tossups – e.g – Vandy last year and Kentucky this year. But this team lost the bowl game to Michigan State last year!

I think Richt will not hire a special teams coach because he would have to make the hard decision on which of his friends to demote. He doesn’t pull his placekicker because he doesn’t want to hurt his feelings. He doesn’t ever pull Murray (I think) because he promised him playing time and he doesn’t go back on his word.

People keep asking the question,”Do we want to go back to the Ray Goff/Jim Donnan days”? Here’s the story on that, Vince Dooley, who was retiring as head coach, but just in early years of being A.D. at Georgia thought it would be nice to let one of his pet players become head coach at Georgia. After a short period of time, it became clear that this was a mistake, but instead of correcting the problem in a timely manner, Goff was left to run the entire program into the ground. This left the once proud UGA Football program in shambles, and as a consequence, not as attractive to the bigger available names in coaching at that time. Sure Donnan was willing to give it a whirl, but his resume was from Marshall. I do not care what any of you so called Georgia Football know it alls say, The University of Georgia should never have to stoop so low as to take a coach from a school like Marshall. My fear is that Richt will be left to run the program into the ground before he’s gone, making it hard to get the interest of a top notch coach to come to UGA.

Transcript from this week’s UGA-UF Game-planning meeting with CMR, CMB and CTG:

CMR: Sorry I’m late. This whole singing-to-recruits thing is getting out of hand. I just finished singing “Call Me Maybe” to A. Kamara and “Forget You” to D. Henry. I’ve got 16 more requests today alone! Let me ask; do you guys see me as more of a Casey Kasem or a Cousin Brucey? Personally, I love the long-distance dedication….

CMB: Excuse me coach, can we talk about the WLOCP? What’s in the sack anyway?

CMR: Oh that…well, it’s my special “WLOCP Bag O Tricks”. It’s got stuff like end-zone choreography and Halloween-themed uniform gimmicks. I was thinking that this year we could go with the Invisible Man theme because the pollsters clearly don’t appreciate how good we are. What do you think?

CMB: I’ve got 2 names for you: Worley & Henderson!

CMR: Awesome! Who the heck are they?

CMB: 2 dynamic freshmen running backs who, many, many years ago, ran roughshod on then #1 UF, spoiling the Gators’ season.

CMR: Jackpot!! Are they available this weekend?

CMB: No, well, uh, I was drawing a parallel between them and Gurley/Marshall…

CMR: Gotta tell ya’ CMB, I don’t know what you’re talking about half the time, but I love That Thing You Do (CMR stands with air-microphone, begins singing, pointing at CMB) “You…Doing That Thing You Do….”

CTG: Excuse me! Can we talk defense now?

CMR: Oh, of course big fella, sorry bout that! I didn’t see you sitting there behind the Independence Bowl trophy. Fire away…

CTG: I’ve decided that this week, we’re going to just play our base defense, but with a wrinkle! Here’s the really big part…you ready??…I’m going to direct choking gestures at Jeff Driskel the entire game! He will become so un-nerved he will eventually wet himself!

CMR: Fantastic idea! I love Psy-ops, mind-games type stuff! I’ll add that to my “WLOCP Bag O Tricks”! (CMR grabs air-mic again, points at CTG, begins singing AC/DC’s Whole Lotta Rosie) “Let me tell you a story, ‘bout a DC I know, comes to coaching, he steals the show, he ain’t exactly pretty, ain’t exactly small. 35-7! You can’t say we’ve won ‘em all”……..

CTG: We done here??

CMR: Yes, sorry, got carried away. Gotta get to my weekly press briefing anyway. Instead of the usual boring Q&A, I’m going to sing, “Walking on Sunshine”! I’m thinking a little Katrina and the Waves will soothe those fourth-estate savages! See ya’ in Jax fellas!

Has anyone noticed besides me that Gratham has become less “fired up” on the sideline than in years past? I think CMR put a muzzle on him since the Vandy thing last year. Our defense ranked 5th last year has regressed to 50th with virtually the same players. How did that happen? It must be less intensity by the coaches. Nobody gets up into a players face anymore for poor play, all the coaches do is make excuses for their poor performance. I have been a CMR fan for many years but I am real close to sending him packing. If FL. beats us badly on Sat. (and I think they will), hopefully at the end on the season McGairty will make the decision to move in a different direction.

In regards to our OL they are just “bad”. Can you believe they couldn’t block KY? Does anyone out there remember when we had a dominate OL? I can’t. Are they weak? Is it technique? It is probably a combination of both. One of my best friends was a former All American lineman at UGA and played for many years in the NFL. He says it is the technique they are being taught. He told me to watch the Alabama OL and it will give me a good idea of how they were taught to block back in Dooley’s time. Wonder why Ala. seems to have such a great running game? Watch how they “get low and drive block” Against FL watch how we block and you will see why FL. will dominate with their defensive front and our backs will have little room to run.

Tell it like it is. The DAWGS have really been pretenders in recent years for who knows what reason other than they cannot consistently win the big ones. With the supposed talent that it has there is no reason why it should not be in there banging with the best of them. Unless the so-called experts misjudged the talent which is possible. This performance to date of this year’s edition is underwhelming probably due to both players and coaches. If the DAWGS want to be able to run with the contenders then what it presently has isn’t working so it needs to consider making big changes to try and achieve that.

Georgia fans are no longer willing to settle for a 10 win season and be happy; that’s all that has been keeping Richt afloat for the last several years. Ask any Georgia fan what they want more; to average 10 wins a year or an SEC and national championship. Georgia has had some tremendous talent over the last several years and has tremendous talent now; yet we cannot win the big games and we cannot get to the big game in January. So if it ain’t the players or the talent level what does that leave?

If you want a fun, exciting offense and one that is hard to defend then UGA needs to hire Chad Morris at Clempson. Dawgs needs to scrap the 3 – 4 defense too. Recruits like the offense that Chad Morris has implemented at Clempson. Recruits dont like the boring, predictable and mundane offense at UGA.

On this quote:

Georgia QB Murray put it, “We know we have to play an unbelievable game offensively, defensively and on special teams if we want to have a chance to win that game.”

Poor coaching is the only reason a statement like this is made. Players should not have to be concerned with what is going on outside of their control but in a Mark Richt coached team….everybody worries about everything. This causes players to feel like thier job is to do more than be perfect at THEIR OWN job.

right on track about GA’s special teams and lack of coaching, Bill. FL planned well for clowney and the SC defense right from the start. they weren’t even a factor. Took CMB and Friends 2 qtrs to react to the same and they still couldn’t stop SC from sacking and harrassing Murray. FL knows this and there’s no chance GA’s OL can hold off FL’s pressure for the long routes GA runs unless they counter the rush w/short slants and quick outs throw in a draw or two to Gurley. However, bobo has yet to come up w/plays and is so predictable to be nausiating.

have to be realistic, most of us know, based on GA’s overall past performances (years!) they don’t really have a chance beating this FL team and out coaching them. its just not in their genes.

on conner norman. I’d trade ten rambo’s for one more norman. another Sailor on special teams would help tremendously. If mitchell returns a punt of KO I predict he’ll fumble one or the other. for some reason he doesn’t hold onto the ball in either situation.

bottom line another loss to FL and continuing trend of losing to ranked teams by cmr and this now clearly inept coaching crew.

The bottom line: Our alumns/fans are either too scared, or too apathetic to do what’s necessary to win a title. This is not the case at Florida, Bama, LSU, Ohio State, USC…which is why those schools win them. It’s simple.

I think Fla is very beatable. They scored 21 pts with 29 yds of offense. 173 of total offense. Get in front of them early and force Driskell to throw it. Protect the ball and GET PHYSICAL. Yes, we can beat Fla. Play lights out

Mark Thank you for a sensible post.

These fans act like we are 1-6. Did not UGA defeat UF last year. UF does not have a great offense and they don’t have a great pass rush. UGA can throw the ball on UF and we can run on them. SC gave them 21 points. Lattimore was out, so he could not be used as neutralizer. That’s why UF was able to tee-off on Conner Shaw once they were ahead by 3 scores. I knew that something was wrong from the very beginning of the season after having huge visions in the off season. I told everyone that I thought UGA had the returning players and the schedule to contend for an SEC Championship and possibly a NC. However, Georgia yielded 23 points to Buffalo and that game was closer than the final score….To put that in perspective, Buffalo is 1-6 and in 5th place in the MAC East. Buffalo has managed to lose to Northern Illinois 45-3 and was held to 7 points by Kent State.

I don’t hate CMR. I have, however, made up my mind that a good coach would win big with this level of talent and that our players are unprepared, undisciplined and out of position. If Muschamp beats CMR in year 2, that would be 4 Gator coaches (including the Zooker) that have outcoached Richt. We haven’t only lost to every ranked team since 2009, we haven’t even showed up and that is a reflection of the HC. That ass whipping we sustained on National TV by USCe and Spurrier was embarrassing. If you want a “nice guy” for a coach and you are content winning 9-10 games a year but losing big to all contenders, he is your man. If you want a true leader and a game manager that can make critical adjustments during a game, we need a new coach.

By my count, our D Coordinator has averaged 2 bad games to 1 good game in his 2 1/2 yrs at UGA. My guess is that he, like Al Groh, have a lot of knowledge from being NFL guys and veterans but are overloading their players. What isn’t a guess is that UGA could find a better D Coordinator. Half of our players on D will play or get a shot in the NFL – some of them will be 1st rounders. If properly coached, disciplined and motivated, UGA could reach its expectations. It would be expensive, but do we want to reach our potential?

Ohio State fired Cooper (very, very similar to Richt) to hire Tressel. Florida didn’t wait around for Zook to win a title…because they knew he couldn’t (he could beat Richt, though. 2-1 against him). Bama fired Shula…and a host of others, until they found the right man. (they do not settle for mediocrity there…Shula didn’t have a losing record) USC…same as Bama, really. They’ll fire this guy in a heartbeat if he doesn’t win a title. LSU alumns call for Miles’ job every other game, and he actually HAS accomplishments. You could not be proven more wrong.

Many of you have asked, “who will U.Ga. possibly find as coaches who could get better results than our current group?” My reply is that it won’t be difficult at all to find a different set of coaches who could get results as good as the current group–AND FOR FAR LESS MONEY. Much of my gripe with Richt’s staff is that these guys are being paid enormous sums of money for what they do and that they seemingly are not held accountable for results on the field. Unless the money supply to the athletic association begins to decline, I don’t see much hope for change.

In my opinion, the problems began around the 2006 Sugar Bowl where UGA came out flat and was down 28-0 one minute into second qtr. They looked unprepared and shell-shocked. The next flat showing in a big game came in 2007 in Knoxville with a very talented team that wound up #2 in the nation that year. A win would’ve solidified an SECG birth and probably a NC. Remember, LSU won the NC that year with less talent than UGA. A UT team that finished with 4 losses beat UGA 35-14. The next big-stage flat game came against Bama in 2008 when UGA was ranked #1 and had Stafford, Moreno and Greene (all first rounders) and found themselves shockingly down 31-0 at halftime during the “blackout.” That same year, UGA was beaten 49-10 by UF in Jacksonville and was embarrassingly non-competitive with tons of NFL talent on the team. 2009 and 2010 were just plain bad seasons all together. In 2011, UGA brought a very talented team to the Dome to face LSU in the SECCG and completely fell apart in the second half, ultimately losing 42-10 on a National Stage. In 2012, UGA has faced one decent team on a big, national stage and the result: a 35-7 whipping with no adjustments, no pregame scheming and no emotion from HC. This appears to be a pattern. If UGA gets beaten bad this weekend by UF, you have to wonder if this coaching staff will ever turn the corner again in big games.

When you recruit in the top 20 in the country every year; and often in the top 10, the expectation is to at least be motivated, positioned and competitive in every game you play in. We all know that you cant win them all. But if you are content getting killed in big time games and looking shocked and overmatched on the biggest stages and beating all of the bad teams you face, then support CMR. You won’t find a nicer, gentler man in this business. This team has more talent on it than any team CMR has had since he’s been here. I’ve defended CMR for the last time after that sorry effort I saw at Kentucky. These coach’s work about as hard as their head coach does, which is not much any more. Most of these guys should have been out recuiting all week on a by week but CMR decided they must have enough players already commited and they want to leave some more scolarships for walkons. That is the easy way out. I’m so tired of not being able to set down and enjoy a UGA game anymore, because CMR doesn’t try to put any body away early no matter how weak a team is. All of UGA’s games the last 2 years go right down to the wire and the schedule has been pretty weak during that time. I’ll always be a UGA fan, but since these coaches seem fat and happy and can’t seem to coach these guys up, I’m ready to clean house. Fire them all after this season Including even Scott Lost Howard and get a fresh start with some people with a little fire in their gut.

6-1 this season, good overall record. So why are fans like me not happy with Richt right now? I think it’s the combination of a team that appears to be as talented as any Georgia has had in recent memory and possibly the easiest schedule that I can recall in 35 years following UGA football.

Getting reamed (and appearing to be unmotivated and outmatched in the process) by a South Carolina team that went on to lose to the two REAL contenders it’s played this year doesn’t inspire much confidence. Struggling to hang on against a terrible KY team with two weeks to prepare doesn’t help any. And the feeling that it would take some luck and an usually flat performance by UF to have any chance this week is the icing on the cake.

Sorry, just not content knowing that we’re probably going to beat Tech yet again this year, and we take care of business against the cupcakes and down SEC programs like Vandy and (probably) Auburn. While that’s nice…is it too much to ask for UGA to put it together against a top opponent instead of looking like they don’t want to get hurt?

Is it too much to ask for Richt to, just ONCE, beat a Florida team that appears to be championship caliber rather than getting his rear handed to him every 3-4 years or so before picking off a UF team that’s rebuilding or coming off a coaching change?

I don’t think so, but to Richt KoolAid drinkers, our demands seem outrageous and out of line.

I would really like to see what a coach like John Gruden could do at Georgia . I wonder if anyone has ever asked him about it ? We need a coach who can bring some discipline to the sidelines . We need a defensive coach . Look at the SEC now and see what coaches are winning the games that count . Florida – Defensive minded coach , LSU – Defensive minded Coach , Alabama – Defensive minded coach , Carolina – Offensive coach with a Good Defensive Mind Behind him . Defensive minded coaches understand how to win in this conference Play Great Defense and Control the lines on both sides of the football . Look how LSU beat Carolina . They didnt run away from Clowney and Company , They didnt try to throw deep balls on 4 and 1 or run deep routes all night . They took the ball , came out in the I and Ran it right at people . What does Georgia Try to do . Let’s go 5 wide and leave our undersized / Young offensive line to fend for themselves . When did just winning 10 games a year become acceptable ? When you play 5 high school teams , struggle with Kentucky and Vandy every year and lose to teams Like Carolina and Florida how is that ok ? The goal for Georgia every year should be compete for the National Championship , with Millions of dollars in the bank , some of the best facilities and all the talent in the world nothing less then that is acceptable . If the program is just happy with 10 wins and bid to the Outback bowl is ok, we as fans need to find something else to spend our money on we are not Georgia Tech . Im tired of people talking about our Tradition and History and then we come out and get beat down by teams with less to equal talent . If players / coaches didnt come to georgia to win on a national stage then why are they there? I remember the 8-4 years and we should be past them . Fans who find it ok that we beat the little nobodys all year and then get smoked by Florida and Carolina are the Problem with Georgia football . We need to take a chance and see what happens with the coaching change . Richt has done us well and I applaud him for what he has done but its time for Georgia to take the next step in Football and Im not sold he can get us there .

The defense is playing pretty great overall.

Giving up 24 pts a game, gave up 22 last year.

Improving 2nd half defense in scoring, holding teams to 8 pts in 2nd half (top 12 in NCAA)

hOLDING teams to 4 pts in the 4thquartr (top 15 in NCAA)

We have deep seeded problems on defense and the offensive line. Why ?? I’d really like to know. We will probably lose by 20 or more points. If we go 10-2, it will be a disgrace of a season with all the talent we have. Players, that is. We have no talent on the coaching staff. That is obvious.

Stats are BS

October 22nd, 2012
5:27 pm

You don’t need a bunch of stats to defend or slash the dogs, you can clearly see that our problem on defense is that we can’t stop the run! The reason is because of scheme and personnel. The reason the 3-4 defense is popular in the NFL is because it was designed as a “Rush the Passer” defense, because the NFL is a pass heavy league. In the run game, using the 3-4, the nose guard has to be good enough to cover both A gaps, which is rare for most college nose guards. The 2 DE’s must be athletic enough to beat the OT’s off the ball… problem is Abry Jones is way to heavy for that position and not nearly athletic enough to accomplish that. Corn Wash has the perfect size for that position, but he’s just not very good. He’s underachieved his entire career at GA. That’s why the 3-4 isn’t working at GA.

Also, in the 3-4 scheme, it’s imperative that the 2 inside backers control the A & B gaps on either side of the center, by staying at home and reading the run plays. However, if you watch GA during games, one of those inside backers are often running out of position just prior to the snap, leaving one inside backer to cover all 4 of those gaps, which is basically impossible for any one guy to to, no matter how good he is, because the blockers greatly out number the defenders.

If they want to run TREE all over the place then he needs to go back to strong safety or let him roam around at outside backer like JJ’s does, but an inside LB MUST stay at home and read the run or you will continue to see those gashing run plays in the middle of our defense. I think they should consider moving TREE to outside backer and put Vasser on the bench and go with Gilliard and Herrera at inside LB, since they are more stay at home run stoppers. Hell, it couldn’t get any worse.

Some of my fellow Dog fans appear to have unreasonable expectations of the coaching staff and the teams performances against real competition. They seem to feel that georgia should be in the hunt for a National Championship every 25 years or so. We cannot be selfish. We were in the Championship game in 1942 and 1980. We need to be quiet and be happy with what we have. Our head coach never gets up tight like those Al.,Fla.,LSU and SC coaches do on the sidelines when someone jumps off side. I am sure our boys have a better collage experience at Ga. where excellace is not demanded. Think how hard it would be to play for Sabin or Spurrier. A N/C is no consulation for having to play for a mean coach.
I am Glad I am a Bulldog where a game is just a game and a loss by 40 is no different than fighting hard and loseing by a field goal in the last 5 seconds. Actually, Alabama, Fla. and LSU have a deed to the N/C and I am glad Ga. is not in the hunt since the aforementioned teams allready own the championship.. Bring on Tech.
A victory is a victory!

Here’s the list of what to fix before the Florida game;
1) win the turnover game 2) take advantage of the most agressive undisciplined team Gators in football with trick plays, snap count rhythm, pre-snapmovement on defense, running qb, etc. 3) stack 8 in box dare Gators to throw–they can’t

UGA Fan: The true Bulldog fans know that our ten game win streak that resulted in CMR’s contract extension set us back at least 4 seasons. We continue to pull for our team because we love them like an errant child, even though we know they are flawed. We will never be a top tier SEC team under Richt’s leadership for one simple reason: fundamentals. We are the most unsound football team I have ever seen at UGA and I have followed them for 42 years. The first rule of football is a cliche, “the game is won or lost in the trenches”. Our lines are young and lack depth. How does that happen under a 12 year regime? How do we not have 85 players under scholarship? Poor recruiting. Yes, we get the talented flashy skill players that can make headlines but have no support deep into the close games. No Special Teams coordinator? What a joke. Vince Dooley always made it a priority to have talented kickers, returners, blockers, schemes, because so many games are won or lost on special teams. It is an afterthought under Richt. Florida 42, UGA 17

Bill look at the time of possession of the teams. As ole Steve Spurrier said. Georgia scores so quick their defense is on the field a long time. Research the fact that the Georgia Defense is on the field more time than the offense. I suppose if they get tired they are not in the best of shape possibly?

Just like Clint Eastwood said to the empty chair, “If you’re not doing your job , it’s time to let ‘em go” ,and damn, the man’s had 12 years to do his , and he’s still having the type of problems that are just so rudimentary to fix , and he just seems to be oblivious to them. Why does he make 3 mil a year? Especially when we can’t beat a decent team. I honestly do think we need to move to the ACC to enjoy any level of succss, as long as we keep Richt.

Charlie Strong for UGA head coach. UGA would lock down recruiting in Atlanta again, he was Spurriers defensive coordinator when Florida dominated UGA, and never had a defense that wasn’t ranked in the Top 10 as a defensive coordinator. He’s undefeated at Louisville now, there are no big name jobs open right now in college football…..this is the time to get him.

UGA players make good NFL players, they can be taught because they don’t have any established habits from successful coaching. They can easily be reprogrammed better than a player that has successful technique and unwilling to change.

Great coaches. Head man Richt never bothered very cool. Offensive coord Bobo keeps a simple game plan which everyone knows. Defensive coordinator Grantham well paid for the defense of last year which managed to lose to the 4 good teams we played but won the cakes. He may have managed the same. Guess another BIG raise is coming. Special teams. Guess what no coach to blame as Richt has no special teams or special teams coach. Oh let’s not forget Will Friend our young OL coach he looked like a great find early but where is all the talent going. Maybe the oc and hc need to realize that we don’t have a great OL and use more muscle. We do have good backs but don’t use them well
Now the answer. If we do not win the east and at lt least make a hard run at secc then FIRE all of the above and get a new coaching staff that seriously wants to be great (not just good).
GO DAWGS. See you in J’ville. Cullowheedawg

I have yet to hear CMR at anytime this year say that the all-around play is unacceptable. I’ve heard statements like, “we’ll be alright” and “we’ve just got to play harder”. Play harder? Really? You have to tell your team to play harder against the likes of Buffalo, Florida Atlantic and Kentucky? I will always root for the Dawgs, but based on what I’ve seen thus far, I have no confidence whatsoever that they have what it takes going forward to win a game against a quality opponent. I find it very disturbing that a coach cannot see and acknowledge what everyone else (fans, media, own players) sees as unacceptable play & coaching. Hard to believe this is the same team that was picked to finish first in the SEC East. My, how the mighty have fallen…

I’m telling you Dawg fans, you need to join the ACC. You can win conference championships there with Richt, although the BCS will pretty much be out of the question (FSU’s BCS score right now is 0.000). Just saying.

Charley Strong is more likely to end up at Arkansas. Tuberville, Strong and Malzahn are all Arkansas natives and none will likely be available until that job is filled.

The thing that is inexcusable is that we have had nothing but trouble
on the O line for the last several years.

Potential all-Americans underperform each and every year.
There is no cohesiveness on the lines because they don’t play together long enough.

We are always “waiting for the line to gel”.
Richt apparently doesn’t know how to recruit or coach O linemen.
He certainly doesn’t seem to get it on the defensive line.

I have always supported him.
While I like being in the national spotlight at least part of the year
I don’t like losing the big games.
That does no good for the players, the University, or the fans.

Richt must go.

If I remember correctly dawgs had extra scholly’s last year. Why didn’t we offer both a top notch punter and field goal kicker last year? Red shirt them with a year of training with our two seniors at the time. Instead we now suffer with two true freshmen. I just don’t think that’s sound football.
