Tood Gurley should have a big day against a young Kentucky team. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
There’ve been a lot of SEC schedule change-ups in recent years (and more are coming) and the Dawgs frequently have played the Kentucky Wildcats late in the season, but this year is a throwback to days of old: It doesn’t get much more traditional than an October Saturday night in Lexington.
After the big letdown in Columbia, Mark Richt’s team is looking to get back on track and, on paper, Kentucky looks like the perfect opponent to help the Dogs do just that. The Wildcats have been hit hard by injuries, play a lot of true freshmen and looked absolutely awful last week against Arkansas.
You’d figure Georgia would have no trouble covering the spread, which is more than 27 points.
But two concerns lurk in the back of Georgia fans’ minds: This is the SEC and as Todd Grantham reminded us this week, “on any given Saturday, anybody can beat you. … Any time you play on the road in this league is going to be a battle.”
Throw in the fact that Kentucky led South Carolina 17-7 at halftime and Grantham’s defense has gotten off to a slow start this season, even against lesser opponents, and you have the elements of another underwhelming first half by the Dawgs.
I’d be shocked if the outcome of the game was still in question in the fourth quarter, but what would really please me would be for Georgia to come out taking care of business from the very beginning, especially on defense. And, of course, the Dawgs’ offense doing what they should be able to do pretty easily against the Wildcats. If at least one half of Gurshall doesn’t have another 100-yard game, I’ll be surprised. And Aaron Murray ought to finally take that career touchdown pass record, too.
I’ll take any SEC win, but the last time the Dawgs were favored by more than 20 points on the road was 2004, ironically at Kentucky. Georgia won that game 62-17 in an effort that saw Richt emptying the bench.
Parker Welch, I’m hoping I get to see you play some this week!
Now, let’s get to some Junkyard Mail. …
Sammy Tribble writes: Whew, the 2013 schedule looks quite a bit tougher for my Dawgs. But at least it’s not Alabama we’ll be facing from the SEC West next year, and seeing Zach Mettenberger play Between the Hedges should be cool. But what’s with Georgia having to go to Auburn two years in a row? And a home schedule without either Auburn or Georgia Tech? Bill, when’s the last time that happened? I’d say Georgia season ticket holders are getting shortchanged, wouldn’t you?

Zach Mettenberger should get a return to Sanford Stadium in 2013. (Associated Press)
Well, in a pure football sense, swapping a home game against LSU for Auburn is an even swap for UGA ticket holders, but that, of course, ignores the fact that Georgia-Auburn is a special rivalry. But the conference says it needed three teams to make repeat visits in order to set up the proper rotation between SEC East and SEC West teams from 2014 on, and Georgia was one of the ones that got stuck. So much for all those Georgia-gets-special-treatment conspiracy theories. And 2013 will be the first season since 1957 that Georgia hasn’t had a home game against either Auburn or the Yellow Jackets. There’d been speculation that Tech might be agreeable to switching things up and playing in Athens two years in a row in order to get out of having to play road games against Virginia Tech, Clemson and Georgia all in the same season, but with the uncertainty about the 2014 SEC schedule still looming, that now looks unlikely.
J Lucas writes: If Georgia doesn’t finish strong and compete for the SEC, should Georgia look for a different coach? Or do you think Richt will eventually “finish the drill” and get a national championship for the Dawgs? It’s so frustrating because he is such amazing person and coach but the Dawgs can’t keep going this route of winning 10,11, and even 12 games and think that’s enough. Hate to sound greedy, but like I said before we are in the SEC, we have had the talent. What is wrong with Georgia?
It’s hard to say what’s wrong other than a fairly consistent failure in recent years for the Dawgs to play their best against big-time opponents, but calling a program a failure simply because it doesn’t win a national championship is setting the bar so high that you’re bound to be disappointed. And, frankly, getting rid of a coach who wins 10 games a year doesn’t seem very likely. Where Greg McGarity will have to make a tough decision is if Richt’s teams start performing in the eight- to nine-win range. Next season, with a much tougher schedule and quite a few defensive players likely to leave for the NFL, I think the expectations will be relaxed somewhat. But beyond that, yes, a breakthrough season would work wonders for the program’s long-term stability.
Johnathan Tatman writes: Does UGA have a chance of taking the SEC East again this year? How would the rest of the season for Florida and South Carolina have to play out for those two teams to be eliminated? If we are able to make it to the SEC championship, what are our chance of holding a current Bama or Mississippi State team?
If Florida beats South Carolina and Georgia beats Florida and wins out in the conference, Georgia would be the SEC East winner. How would this year’s team match up against Alabama? Well, if they get that far, the outlook would probably be better than it seems at this juncture. But you’d expect the Crimson Tide to be favored. And if it’s not Bama representing the West, I think LSU is a much more likely division winner than the Maroon Bulldogs.
John writes: Bill: I have to hand it to the South Carolina. Those people did a great job of getting the crowd into the game. Even in big games, the crowds at Sanford Stadium do not seem to get as pumped up as South Carolina was. One reason may be the canned music. Every time the Gamecocks were set to kickoff, the stadium was blasting the song “Sandstorm,” and that really got that crowd going. I think Georgia could learn something from South Carolina about trying to get the fans more involved in the game.
I think you’re right, John. The atmosphere at Sanford Stadium definitely could use some tweaking.
Ron Roberts writes: Where the HELL is Richard Samuel? Recalling the way he ran rough-shod over the Florida Gator defense late last year had me wondering — particularly when it was evident (and that was pretty early in the game) why he wasn’t dispatched to give extra blocking? It’s THAT kind of “in-game” adjustment we seem to be ill-equipped to make. So where is he? Why was it painstakingly obvious to everyone else that we needed to lose a wideout (that Murray had little-to-no time to get to anyhow) to bolster our backfield blocking?
Samuel simply has been beaten out by other players. He’s pretty much out of the tailback rotation now, it seems, and the Georgia coaches have been pleased with how Merritt Hall is playing at fullback. As Richt put it: “He is a very tough kid, very sharp and he makes very few missed assignments.” And Quayvon Hicks is getting playing time blocking in goal-line situations. At this point, it doesn’t look like Samuel is going to see the field a lot, but there’s still half a season to go so that could change.

Should Aaron Murray be running the ball more? (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
Ed writes: Hey Bill. I’m sitting here watching the replay of the Georgia-South Carolina game on ESPN3. It’s tough to watch, and this occurred to me while watching the first few plays. Why is Georgia not capitalizing on Murray’s running ability to make plays? He and [Connor] Shaw are mirror images of each other as far as their build and athletic ability are concerned, but Murray is a better passer. Spurrier does capitalizes on Shaw’s running ability, but Bobo neglects to do so with Murray. I think if he would reel off a few nice runs it would open our passing game up, too, with the opposing D having to spy the QB. I feel like we’re wasting a valuable talent that he has.
I have to disagree with you here, Ed. I don’t really want to see Murray running the ball a lot more than he has this season. Yes, he made some nice plays a couple of years ago when he tended to panic and take off running when his pass protection faltered, but Murray isn’t really built to be a running quarterback on a consistent basis. And he’s prone to fumble when he does take off. Plus, look who’s on the bench if he gets injured. Georgia really would prefer at this point not to have to take the redshirt off Hutson Mason, and Christian LeMay isn’t ready for prime time. Plus, the Dawgs have Gurshall to carry the ball. So, no, I don’t think Murray needs to be more of a part of the running game.

If Clowney plays he will not be any more effective than Jones has been with an injured foot. Florida could win this one by 10 points.

Let us clarify a statement made by you Bill. The d is not having a slow start–7 games into the season is not a slow start–that is an unpredictable and somewhat unconscionable defense that has of yet lived up to the hype. Simply put, they are overrated or under coached, or maybe over coached on a very complicated scheme that is unreasonable for collegiate level sports. I am going with the latter. Too many schemes–just simplify it and let the athleticism take over. It just may surprise everyone just how gifted this D really is–but, who knows!!!

Really hope we can flip the Tech home-and-away schedule around to accommodate the Auburn switch. Otherwise we’re looking at a home schedule that every other year will not have a single meaningful game the entire second half of the season. That is no good.

This Georgia DAWG wants a decisive UGA win; optimal scoring on offense, a stellar defense, and optimal special teams play, ALL without incurring any injuries, keeping Georgia at it’s physical best and ready to play their best next weekend against the Gators.

To answer the initial question, there’s really nothing I can see against Kentucky that would in any way undo the years of futility against opponents with a comparable talent level to UGA’s. The South Carolina game has me pretty convinced that what we saw that night is just what the Dawgs are at this point, and the Kentucky game isn’t going to put the toothpaste back in the tube. I’ll still watch every game I can and hope for the best, but I can’t shake the feeling that the ceiling has been reached.
And along those lines, it shouldn’t necessarily be THAT hard for McGarity to show a ten-win coach the door. It would all depend on whether he has decided that the obligatory ten wins and no title will always be good enough, and whether he can realistically find a replacement that would be worth transitioning to (Peterson?). This is a big if, I know; the point is that with the talent pool that UGA has to draw from, the customary ten-win-but-still-somehow-uneventful year shouldn’t make Richt unfireable.
Lastly, there’s nothing ironic about the similarity between this year’s spread and 2004’s.

Eric, I concur with all of your points. That being said, we should by all rights blow UK away, but somehow we have a propensity to make an inferior opponent look better than they are. I would love to see us be up much like Arky was last week at halftime, wasn’t it like 42-0? Then, give LeMay and a lot of subs some playing time. However, I fear that that scenario will not play out as we will probably be up by about 10 at halftime and probably win by something like 38-17. I hope that I am wrong, but I just do not see this team blowing UK away early. They were up on SC 17-7 at half, and it could even have been worse. There are something like 23 or so guys on the UK roster from Georgia, and I am sure they will give it their best to keep it close. Our talent will let us prevail, but I have no confidence in CMB having the ability to orchestrate a big blowout.JMHO

There isnt really anything UGA can do in this game to impress me or to make me think that we are on the right track, although we should cover the spread easily. But that is the point isnt it, we cant win against equally talented opponents. I am tired of beating inferior opponents, running up the stats, and acting like we have done something. I want UGA to go in to Jacksonville next week, hand the Gators there first loss of the season, and win for the second year in a row, then I will be impressed. Other than that, we are no different than a talented ACC or Pac 10 team playing a soft schedule.

UGA – 70
UK – 14
UGA will beat the blue out of Kentucky, will climb in rankings and start feeling puffed up again. UGA will lose a close game to UF but will take out frustrations on the mascot challenged Ole Miss Rebel Bears. Once again feeling puffed up, UGA will likely lose to an awful Auburn team.
Expect to see a roller coaster the rest of the season.

Let’s hope Booboo isn’t suffering from Tommy Bowdenitis. Several years ago Bowden at Clemson had the best running back tandem in the country (spiller and davis) yet he tried to make a heisman trophy candidate out of that god awful qb they had–we need to use our strengths and its is not Murray and his arm and our weak inefficient zone blocking schemes by our under performing O-Line–have them drive and charge at the d -line and allow Gurley and Marshall to run all night–the ball ain’t heavy–my apologies to Bear Bryant–if a team has a strong pass rusher run at him all night–worked for LSU–it will work for us–stupid boo boo!!

I’d like to see improvement, especially, a solid defensive effort where we hold them to 10 or less and get one or more turnovers. I’m not worried about the offense against Kentucky but I would like to see zero turnovers and a low number of penalties. Obviously, no big plays against us on special teams would be greatly appreciated.

Bill, what a Georgia fan wants to see is a team on fire to win, a coaching staff prepared, a quarterback who can take control of a game, a defense ready to make big plays and not blow coverage, an OC who is creative and can evolve, a DC who anticipates the offense after weeks of preparation, team leaders who fire men up and hold them accountable, men who want to win worse than anything else. MR, MB and TG are not capable of any of this. No matter what they do the rest of the season, they disappointed with that painful loss to SC when they were dominated every which way. How many times do we have to hear how ready they were and how much they prepared throughout the year only to watch them get run over by a ranked opponent, and then have the head coach say simply “we got whooped”? Who is holding MR accountable? Himself? I’m too fatigued anymore to get hopeful about Georgia football until changes at the top are made. That is what a Georgia fan really wants; accountability, success when it counts and the recognition from administration that the program and its longevity are larger than one man who is out of runway.

I want the Dawgs to “Block” for the Running Game , “Rush the Passer” and “Tackle” on Defense. I remember Larry Munson groaning “NO BLOCKING” in the Dawgs mediocre years when they couldn’t get the running game going. Those 8-4 and 9-3 years. I want to see a whole lot better line play than we saw 2 weeks ago. Both lines looked like High School Players against Pro Players. If the Dawgs can Run the Ball then the Play Action Pass will come.

Bill, thanks for responding. I still think a few designed runs for Murray would be choice. FL would be a good game to implement the plays. Also, look at how FL is using Driskel’s legs to make plays. Defenses would be focused down field, and the next thing you know Murray has gutted them for 10 to 15 yds. I know it’s risky, but at this point it’s worth it. If a 6′1″ 210lb football player, which would be a solid size RB, can’t take a few hits on a few runs, then he needs to hang it up…

I’d like to wake up and realize it was just a bad dream. That’s what I want.
Seriously beating Kentucky, really whipping them, beating the spread, running it up to a 27 touchdown lead, putting in our 3rd or 4th string after the first series – who cares – we got exposed by the chickens. Spurrier is Our Daddy!
I wouldn’t be shocked if Kentucky beats us.
As bad as Auburn is, and they stink, they could beat us on a good day.
Fact is, we do not have a very good football program. Notice: We have many excellent players, but our coaches are doing something wrong.
I’d be happy to have Mark Richt fired 5 minutes before kickoff, and replaced by an interim coach picked from one of the top middle school programs.
Maybe Richt can rescue things and beat Florida, but I seriously doubt it. Who cares if we can smear Kentucky? BFD. We can’t beat anybody except Little Sisters of the Girly Men.
Good athletes. Bad coaches.

NCDawg is right. You are wrong Bill. If AM doesn’t keep the ball on the draw play once in a while, then why bother? The threat of the keeper keeps defenses honest. Also, Bobo does not use the play action pass effectively. Why in the world would he go with three to five WRs against SCs pass rush. Five wides against Vandy and leaser foes was fun. But against SC (and UF) we need some big boy football. And one more thing Bill. Do you really think running the ball out of bounds for first downs three times a game is more dangerous than taking a deep drop with no play action or max protect against JC?

I agree with P-man in that we need more band music between plays (not more canned music) to pump our crowds up. However, we don’t need more of the “duh, duh, duh, duh, duh, duh, duh, duh” tune. How about more cheer music and short excerpts between plays of befitting tunes featured on the Redcoat Band CD like “Georgia On My Mind”, “Hail to Georgia”, etc.? The pageantry of live bands is a major contributor of that which makes college football so special. Leave the canned music for the pro games!!
