Richt got one thing right: Dogs’ performance against the Gamecocks was ‘embarrassing’

The Dogs dared Connor Shaw to throw deep on them, and he did just that. (Bob Andres / AJC)

The Dogs dared Connor Shaw to throw deep on them, and he did just that. (Bob Andres / AJC)

If you had deliberately set out to script a completely nightmarish first quarter for Georgia against South Carolina, where just about everything went wrong for Mark Richt’s Bulldogs, you couldn’t have come up with anything more demoralizing for the Bulldog Nation than what transpired Saturday night in Columbia.

It was a complete failure on the part of Georgia’s defense, offense and special teams right from the get-go, with the first quarter being the worst a Richt team has looked since the infamous “Blackout” loss to Alabama in 2008.

On the first series of the game, Todd Grantham’s defense loaded the box to try and slow Gamecocks running back Marcus Lattimore, who had feasted on the Dawgs the past two years, daring Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw to use his arm and go deep to beat them. Which he proceeded to do on the second offensive play of the game, hitting Damiere Byrd on a 42-yard pass on which Bacarri Rambo went for and missed the interception.

Shortly after that Shaw found Bruce Ellington wide open in the Georgia end zone and the Cocks were up 7-0.

Georgia got a great kickoff return from Malcolm Mitchell, helped by a flag against South Carolina, but hopes that the Dogs could keep up with the Gamecocks fizzled on Georgia’s third offensive play as an Aaron Murray pass was deflected (which would turn out to be a frequent occurrence on this night) and intercepted. That turnover led to the Gamecocks scoring a second touchdown — on another play on which Georgia’s suspect pass coverage again left a receiver uncovered.

Then it was time for the Bulldogs’ special team collapse of the night, with a punt returned all the way by the Gamecocks’ Ace Sanders for a touchdown.

So, with less than 10 minutes having elapsed in the first quarter, South Carolina was already up 21-0.

The second quarter saw Georgia briefly threaten to get back into the contest when the Dawgs put together their one sustained drive of the half, finally lining up first and goal inside the Carolina 10 thanks to a great catch by Mitchell.

First down saw Todd Gurley bull his way to the Carolina 2.

Then Mike Bobo decided he wanted to try and score in the most conservative (and predictable) way possible and called another Gurley run into the line that gained a mere yard.

On third down, Murray tried to force a dangerous pass that fell incomplete. Rather than take 3 points, Georgia rightly decided to go for it on fourth down, but for some reason Murray threw a pass in front of the goal line rather than to one of his receivers in the end zone and ended up short — and with no points to show for an 80-yard, 15-play effort.

The game was essentially over at that point, although the second half saw the Gamecocks add a couple more touchdowns and give up one in garbage time as a determined Boo Malcome ran hard against Carolina’s second-string defense to avert a shutout.

The South Carolina defense had its way with Aaron Murray most of the night. (Bob Andres / AJC)

The South Carolina defense had its way with Aaron Murray most of the night. (Bob Andres / AJC)

The main storyline of the evening was this: The Gamecocks’ defensive line dominated the Dogs’ offensive front all night, shutting down the “Gurshall” running attack and constantly harassing Murray, who had one of his shakiest performances in quite some time.

And while Grantham’s defense eventually slowed down the Carolina juggernaut a bit, there was no denying that early on they looked absolutely clueless as Shaw directed the Gamecocks’ offense just about perfectly.

So, once again, a Richt team that had soared into the Top 5 by beating lesser nonconference and midlevel SEC opponents came a cropper when it faced a good team.

It was a performance so flat and lifeless that ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit termed it “shocking.”

Actually, not so shocking for anyone who’s watched Richt teams in recent years repeatedly show up looking unprepared and unmotivated whenever they face a Top 10 opponent.

As the Georgia head coach himself put it after the game, it was bad enough that the Dogs lost, but “the way we lost hurts and is embarrassing as well.”

The emphasis there should be on embarrassing.

Feel free to share your own views on Georgia’s complete failure in Columbia.

Bill, read your Blawg everyday. I love the Dawgs and always will. I have three concerns I’d love to express. 1st.How could a team so talented show up with no motivation in the biggest game this program has been a part of since 2008 ? 2nd. I know I’m not the only one who sees us passing in running situations and running in passing situations. I simply don’t understand the ideology behind Bobo’s play calling. 3rd. I’m glad you don’t defend Richt in this post. He’s done a pitiful job of getting his teams prepared for big games. Is it safe to say that we Georgia fans must get used to not competing for the SEC, and simply playing for 10 wins every year ?

Don’t blame BK, its fans like you that keep this team mediocre by wearing rose colored glasses and not pointing out where the actual blame for this loss and many others like it lies, right in the lap of the GA coaching staff. You want this team to remain an over rated, under coached imposter ? Thats what it will remain if the administration in athens isn’t scolded into making a long over do change in direction by hiring a new coaching staff and coaching up the talent that has under achieved under the current coaching staff. You’re not a true dawg fan if you settle for second best, status quo. Bone head.

I’m done.

This song has become too familiar and Richt insists on singing it like its “Amazing Grace”.

Unprepared. Embarrassing. Poor schemes. Poor play. However you want to term it its an all too familiar commentary on our Program.

There will be some who call me a fair weather fan, so be it. However, my money is better spent elsewhere rather than on a Program that continues down Richt’s path. I’ve already told McGarity about me stopping my contribution (its not much but I gave for 20 years) and that he can let me know when a real change has been made.

Your defensive line is very thin, and your linebackers and secondary play with little discipline. Ever see a three-year starter play with as little poise as Murray? I find myself thinking about the Goff era. The difference being that I expected the ass-kickings back then. I was only shocked back then by the extremity of the whipping. Tonight ranks right up there with the “worst 19 seconds in Georgia football history” under Goff. But these repeated collapses are harder to take because the Richt teams are just good enough to make you expect better.

The writing was on the wall. Richt said his team came through against UT when the game was on the line. Giving up 44 to a mediocre team was OK. Grantham chimed in that he was satisfied with the defense – adding that they know what the need to do. So instead of challenging their players, these guys accepted mediocrity. So who’s surprised at the SC outcome?

Wait till UGA gets LSU and AL back on the schedule. This is the easiest schedule they will ever have. I wouldn’t be surprised if they lost at Kentucky. They gave USC a tough time. In fact, almost everybody else USC played has given them a tough time except the Bulldogs. UGA is the only SEC team they have really embarrassed. Richt has his perspective in life right up to a point but he is missing the point I think. The bloggers who rage against him need some of his perspective and he needs a dash of their insane desire to win. If you don’t really think that what you put your hand to each and every day, your work, the way you spend all of your time, is super important–playing championship football at the highest level–then you should change jobs. To me it’s like a movie director with a big budget and lots of backing making a bad movie, letting down his investors and the people who worked on his movie who then says, “Well, it’s not the end of world. There are other scripts out there. I will get it right next time. There have been way way too many of those moments for Richt. And he never really follows through. Winning games and playing championship level football does not require you to sell your soul or abandon your family. Richt should also know that, as the Dean of SEC coaches, he’s had time to do something grand. He capitalized early in his career at UGA but he’s become a bland colorless figure since 2008–even at 13-1 or whatever the record was, he still lost to Florida. He took the job and gets paid handsomely to win games. He is too philosophical about it all. Fans don’t want a philosophical coach. They want a coach who wants to win as desperately as they do. He just doesn’t get that part of the job anymore. He has not delivered on all the big promises. He lost to Vanderbilt in Athens on Homecoming. The only thing he has really done is beat Tech on a regular basis but that’s not saying much these days. He should look in the mirror and ask himself if he thinks he has taken UGA where they wanted to go. He’s a philosopher. He should excel at introspection.

Many of you have seen my posts here and know I am a true Dawg fan and have been a staunch supporter of Coach Richt through thick and thin. I think Coach Richt is a fine man, a good representative of the University and a good football coach but tonight I can only come to one conclusion… it is time to clean house. Please Mr.McGarity it is time to try something different. Shocked, bewildered, embarrassed… these words have no place in Georgia football lore. I was ashamed to call myself a Bulldog tonight. The coaching staff needs to go… everyone… no holdovers. We have more talent than South Carolina but we somehow can’t seem to use it properly. The pattern is undeniable and it has to end. There is something that is out of whack in our program and it seems to be endemic. We must have a culture change and the only way that is going to happen is for the coaching staff to move on and start afresh. Mr.McGarity this is not the level of excellence you are looking for and I’m afraid that the flaws are so entrenched they can’t be corrected any longer. The Bulldog Nation deserves better.

Saban and Spurrier may be hard a**es, and demand excellence in some extreme ways…but they win championships. They are old school football coaches and sometimes I think that’s what boys need today.
I respect CMR and the good life example he leads for the boys, but you are a football coach…SHOW SOME EMOTION!!!! Get tough and a little peeved when your boys give up 21 points in 10 minutes!!
Don’t finally pull them to the side in the 4th quarter and give them a lil pep talk.

I’m so tired of these Kool Aid drinkers, the same ones who had the “Ray must stay” signs. How many times are we going to get embarrassed in big games? Are we supposed to be satisfied with trying to be competitive? Ready for another beat down in Jax? It’s time for a change. The argument about who to bring in to replace Richt is old. I just want a chance that we can get to the next level. Coach Richt built some momentum and now we’re stagnant. Thanks Coach but it’s time for the step to the next level. Look at al the players in the NFL and what do we have to show for it? There are at least 8 future nfl players on our roster. How many do you think Carolina has? Does anybody doubt that if the teams changed coaches that UGA would’ve won? Time to move on and it’s not the “lunatic fringe Buck Belue,’ it’s season ticket holders.

We see it every year. Do well for a few games against lesser opponents. Finally face a legitimate team and crap the bed. This is Mark Richt football. For all the touchdowns Aaron Murray throws, he is just like his coach as well. Against lesser competition, he is lights out. Against tough teams, he is a loser. That is just a fact. It will be unpopular with some of you, but Murray is just not steady in big games.

I coached and would replace players to see if the next guy could get the job done. What do you have to lose with fear and coompetition? Why on 4th and 3 are we throwing a 30 yard pass? why on 3rd and 12 are we running and connecting on a 9-yd route? The 1st play Gurley got to the edge for 15 yd. Since we couldn’t block them up the middle, why didn’t we run wide more often? How many of the top ten recruits in GA are we getting this yr? I predicted to my family that we wouldn’t punt out of bounds 35 yds, but give Sanders an open field to make us look silly like the Honey Badger did. They yelled at me to predict something good for Georgia. I couldn’t because I knew too much football. 0-10 v. ranked teams gets you fired. I hate this crap we’re going through.

Coach Ricth and Jimbo Fisher will never win the big games. They are a product of Bobby Bowden who also had trouble winning big games., UGA’s AD must insist CMR make changes in his staff or ask him to resign. Bobo and the entire offensive staff must go. Need a special teams coach too. Need to go back to a 4:3 and put pressure on the freeking QB. If your assistant coaches aren’t getting promoted to coordinators and head coaching positions then they are not doing their job. USC, Alabama, Auburn Flordia and LSU lose their coaches every year. It’s because their good. No body wants ours because their just mediocre. That’s unacceptable. Changes are needed….

Our Defense will never hold a good team to 10 or 14 pts.Not with Grantham as the DC.This dude doesn’t have a clue.We started deep in our own territory most of the game on offense,so conservative calls shouldn’t have been such a shock. On defense however,if Jarvis doesn’t have a big game.we have no pass rush.No passh rush equals a secondary that looks lost. This has been the story for 5 years now.Todd Grantham for HC?You have to be friggin kinding me!!!I’m STILL waiting for this guy to show that he is a good DC.

I am still proud to be a Georgia Bulldog and am still 100 percent behind one of the highest winning coaches in College Football currently…Mark Richt. Do you know what is so interesting….look around the blogs and you will see the exact same negativity towards Les Miles and Florida State’s coach. I just read one with LSU fans blasting Les Miles. (Yes, the coach everyone hailed last year is being blasted by his own fans) When your team performs poorly everyone blames the coaches and this is not always the main problem. Dawg Fans. While I’m a loyal supporter of CMR, I agree that tonight was an embarrassment. Our coaching staff is partially (ok, mainly) responsible. I’d just like to add that it’s the entire Dawg family, not just the guys on the field and sideline, who should hold themselves accountable for our lack of fight. I’ve not missed a home game in 5 years. I was at the game tonight…deep in enemy territory. I’ve never seen Sanford Stadium with as an electric an atmosphere as Williams-Brice had tonight. I’m tired of seeing empty areas in out student section and fans leaving while there’s still plenty of time on the clock. Our fan base should show more fight as well, and not only when it’s to place blame on a player or coach. Just my 2 cents…from an alum and fan who was there tonight.

I have no idea why, but we were simply overwhelmed….totally dominated…in every respect….our OL were boys against men…they tried, but couldn’t do it…..that simple…I don’t know why, but our talent does not measure up…..they are simply not as good as advertised…. our DL does not have one player who could break the starting lineup over SC’s talented linemen….our DBs are inferior…they do not know who to cover, e.g, #36, or they cannot cover, e.g., #18, or they will not hit, i.e., #19, ,,, Shawn Jones should be a LB…at least he will hit….does anyone really want to play for the SEC Championship because SC loses to UF & LSU.?….not me, we are NOT ready for the big time …. why our QB continues to throw to #15 and #17 is beyond me….those two can only be counted upon to drop the ball in big games…they are front runners at best…and lastly, honestly, despite his big numbers, in every game where the opposition’s DL has been superior to our OL, our QB can be counted upon to become a dangerously erratic, totally unreliable, and very predictable underachiever…sad and disappointing as it is, the above history will not change anytime soon….

UGA’s astounding failure to even compete against top teams has to be considered when reviewing CMR’s record. His teams consistently fail to show up against good opposition. We really have become relegated to the purgatory of mediocrity in the SEC with, unfortunately, no end in sight.
Just about every team I can think of comes up with the occasional “big game” against a “big time” opponent– but not UGA.
Going back and saying the last time we won against a top ten team was Hawaii in 2008 is a joke– that team would not have been .500 in the SEC.
It is difficult for an AD to dump a coach with Richt’s winning percentage but it is becoming increasingly obvious that until we do UGA will be mired at second tier status– unable to get off the treadmill of would of, should of, could of..

It’s obvious that the “Peter Principle” is at work here: CMR – along with his entire staff – have reached their level of incompetence. Granted, we’re seeing poor player execution. But, is this caused by such “complex” system that players can’t understand? At times, especially our defensive backs, appeared to be smoking some of those “left-handed” cigarettes. Do we have a general team chemistry problem? I agree, our OL & DL just looked clueless…OK, give SC credit (especially the coach) – they came prepared – physically, mentally, emotionally; we didn’t. Bottom line is head coach & entire program not fitting for top 10 program. At this level in corporate world CEO is fired & a new business plan is implemented.

Like Spurrier says Georgia gets all that talent then what happens to them??? Even though with all that talent there is no coaching talent. Every year we beat teams we are more talented than and even then I see we really get outcoached. Richt has games every year he has beeb here where for a half we don’t show up. Remember West Virginia in the bowl games years ago??? Up 28 in 1st half and we lose. Then we down 28 the next year and win!!! Problem is against the SEC teams there will be NO comeback because the SEC plays defense!!! Murray would be a great spread qb but we can’t seem to let him run. So much for Richt being able 2 study the cutting edge of Football. I will always be a Dawg but until Richt is gone we will never reach the top!!! I don’t care if we still win the east because if we do it will be because of scheduling. I can handle a loss in South Carolina if we lost on turnovers but not prepared was last straw!!!

The entire nation knew SC was trying to draw GA offsides on 4th and short. How did that message elude Jarvis Jones? Laughable that both he and Murray were ever mentioned in the Heisman talk.

As for Murray – it would be nice if a coach OR someone (Maybe Chipper’s Dad) would teach him how to throw a screen pass. When you have a hard charging defense harassing you, a screen is vital to take the charge out of them. Every time he tries to throw one, it is either intercepted or batted down. Also, why in the world didn’t GA coaches call more plays utilizing Murray’s legs since his throwing was so poor. One & only QB draw was late in 4th Qtr and resulted in a first down. I mean all they had to do was see what was working for SC and mimic it as far as having the QB run the ball.

Lastly, Richt said pre-game that the team didn’t need any motivation in facing SC. Ummmm – I beg to differ. I saw 4 quarters of unmotivated mess. And Richt’s 4th Qtr rally around me soft talk to the players changed absolutely nothing.

Coach Richt is a great man and I wish he could lead us to the NC and be at Georgia for years. But the fact is the day USC owns UGA, it is time for change. UGA has more money than any program in the nation. We have some of the best high school athletes in the nation. There is NO reason we should ever be dominated by a USC or anyone else. Why can’t we get an OC or DC to get the job done. USC loses their DC and hires their new DC from within and they are 10X better than us. Really? Our offensive calls last night were awful. Basically same three plays in a row near the goal line. Really? With a strong defensive line and weak DB’s, would it kill us to go to a five receiver set and throw quick passes. Spread them out and let our playmakers make plays and I am not talking about wide receiver screens down the line. If we want to see how to use a 5′11 QB, pull out the Boise State film from last year………………….

If coaching doesn’t matter, how come Spurrier has beaten us at two places that UGA once owned….he’s right, we don’t own South Carolina anymore.

CMR and the current Dawgs remind me of the 70’s Vikings with Bud Grant….and Tarkenton….when the big games come along, disaster awaits because the other team is more prepared and motivated. You can’t just take a business as usual approach in the big games!

Unlike Tarkenton….and Belue, for that matter….our QB is easily intimidated in big games. Remember, in this offense, the QB can check out of the play….Stafford used to do it all of the time….David Greene was probably the best at it….and Murray, who wears the ‘C’, is making all of the wrong decisions….especially in the big games. He was terrified!

We simply were not ready….and this trend is troubling if the goal is to win not only an SEC title, but a National one as well.

Maybe we should apply and move to the Big 10….maybe not….Urban and Michigan State are there….

1- Greg McGarity needs to be replaced, he has no clue how to win big games as an AD. McGarity REALLY considered firing Mark Richt after the 6-7 2010 season, where Richt lost to every team with a winning record. Then 2011 came and Richt went 10-0 against teams that didn’t finish in the top 25, but 0-4 against the teams who did. McGarity decided to retain Mark Richt. Then 2012, and Mark Richt beats the unranked teams by 21, and gets blown out 35-7 by the first top 10 ranked team he faces.

2- Mark Richt has to go. He cannot figure out how to beat teams that finish top 25, Richt’s 2-14 since 2008 against those guys. 4 seasons is long enough to know, if Richt COULD beat top 10 teams, he WOULD have figured it out. The sooner McGarity replaces richt, the sooner things start to turn.

3- The UGA staff is medicore, with no proven experience at any position. UGA has become an experimental training ground for coaches that have never experienced success at their position in college. the lesson to be learned is: ONLY HIRE COACHES THAT HAVE PROVEN THEY CAN WIN AT THEIR POSITION. Goes for Head Coaches, Def Coor & Off Coor, NONE had experience or success at the position they were hired to do at UGA. Mark Richt had no previous experience as head coach winning big games, Grantham had no college experience as DC winning big games, Bobo had no experience as a college OC winning big games.

Ohio State got Meyer, Notre Dame got a winner, Bama got Saban, South Carolina got Spurrier. All had proven they could win big games as Head Coaches in college.

Only 7 points seperate the UGA Coaches from the Tenn staff, think about THAT.

Okay, Bill. I remind you of that silly dribble in pre-season concerning whether losing to USCe would be as bad as losing to Fla this season. Well, how do you feel about that answer now? I say again, a long time ago I fretted over losing to Fla three years in a row and was castigated that fla would never command the series. They do command the series and our record is abysmal against fla and Muschamp is getting the team gelled and buying into his new true sec philosophy of strong D and managed D. Now, USCe with Spurrier at the helm has now taken charge of the series, the recruiting, and the attitude. Do you see how far we have fallen; we are losing to south carolina, a perennial second tier team. We are now solidly etched into second tier status–and that does not bode well for confidence or recruiting. I warned you guys in July that this was the worst possible scenario for UGA and now it has come to fruition–God help UGA!!!

So many things wrong, so little space. I really like Richt. I have stayed away from criticism. Now, I am ready for a change. A college team cannot have so much talent in the pros with nothing to show for it. Our offense has no identity. Rather, we have a playbook. We don’t set up one series for another. How do you explain being a spread offense, down 28-0, and run the ball 5 of 6 times then punt? I never liked the scheme of the new defensive coach. But, if you can make it work, so be it. But we don’t coach simple techniques. We allow week after week defensive ends crash down the line or rush past the quarterback leaving gaping passing lanes and running lanes. Often our alignments are not ready by the snap. Most of all though, is intensity. Since that blackout embarrassment against the Tide, we have failed to show up with any intensity. Our offensive line play against intense defenses is the worst in college football. Sure, hang 50+ on teams like Buffalo, but good grief, Murray has been on the run his entire college career against tough opponents. All of this is coaching. It is consistent poor preparation and game planning, embarrassing, and takes us back to the Goff years. Yes, coaching is that bad. Does anybody remember the Va Tech bowl game? Finally, when coaching is like this, the criticism is loud; it becomes a snowball of mistrust in the locker room that only gets better with change. Ask anybody still alive that played for Johnny Griffith.

The 2-14 slide against teams that finish top 25, started in 2009 when Richt went with JOE COX as his starting QB.

It continued in 2010 & 2011 & 2012 when Richt went with Aaron Murray as his starting QB, even though Murray is now 0-10 vs. teams that finish top 25.

In 2010, Richt made the most important hire of his tenure, he fired Martinez and picked an unproven coach named Grantham, and the team has never beaten a team that finished top 25 since Grantham was hired.

Richt is still trying to win the SEC passing the football. It’s a SEVERELY FLAWED STRATEGY DOOMED TO FAIL in the SEC. It assumes you have: a) excellent oline that can hold blocks long enough 2) poised QB that can make throws in big games c) running backs that can passblock well, but cant run d) receivers that know how to turn small catches into big plays in big games
e) medicore dlines who can’r pressure the QB f) DB’s who don’t jam receivers holding them up at the line. UGA has NONE OF THOSE.

If you don’t think a coach makes a difference, look how Muschamp has brought the Gators back in only his second season. And he doesn’t look like a zombie standing on the sideline like our coach does. That laid back attitude resonates to the team and they play with no emotion. The sad truth is we can’t beat a ranked team.

UGA’s slide can be traced to:

1- Horrendous QB play in big games from Cox & Murray
2- Horrendous hire in unproven Grantham for DC
3- Wrong offensive strategy of trying to win the SEC passing the ball
4- Horrendous special teams, with no special teams coach

Lifetime dawg fan, I understand you can’t win every game but you can be competitive when you have equal talent. This boils down to coaching or lack there of. This program has become stagnant and predictable. Spurrier is right about us, recruit all that talent and they just dissapear as soon as they get here. UGA needs to take notes from other schools such as UF, UA, LSU, SC. Tough hard nose coaches win championships and big games. Our athletic dept is completely fine with mediocre 10 win seasons, only beating sub-par teams and going to sub-tier bowl games. Richt is a guidance counsler not a head coach, at least not in a superior conference. I know these post have no bearing on what will actually happen but how many people, announcers, coaches, and fans have to see and say the same thing about this program every year before someone decides its time for a change.

Florida is going to destroy this team. Why? Because they will be prepared and motivated and their coach shows fire on the sidelines. These young players feed on the emotions of the coach. With Richt, the players are asleep. We need Kirby Smart. He would come in a heartbeat and clean house in the coaching staff.

The dawgs were out-coached again by a ranked team. They have the best pool of talented players in the SEC possibly the nation. What is keeping us from a SEC and national title run is coaches that cannot get the job done. Bobo and Richt are predictable and out coached by ranked teams every time Time to get rid of them both.

CMR is a lot like our president; in over his head! Hey Dawg Nation let’s not forget that this is only a game and we put too much faith in these 18-20 year old kids. I turned the game off in the third quarter, because I had seen enough to know that this is another one of Richt’s typical teams. Richt is a great person and I love him as a person in Christ, but he is actually not a very good coach. His assistants kept him propped up over the years. It is time for a change; Richt will be fine, as he has made millions, and he could probably retire today and not have to worry about money.

The thing is broke. It’s off the tracks. Need to start over. At least Urban had enough sense to know when that had happened at Florida. He quit because he knew he couldn’t get it out of the ditch. Muschamp appears to have put forth a Herculean effort and put the train back on the tracks, but whether it’s headed back into the ditch or not is unknown at this time. Only time will answer whether his coming in and partially cleaning house will be a permanent solution down there.

As for UGA. A complete overhaul is needed. Every body needs to leave. Everything needs to be completely sanitized and then burned to insure the blight never returns. The virus is deadly and must be totally eradicated. After that is done, we need to start over understanding it may take 3 to 6 years to be competitive again. We must be sure and not repeat the mistake Auburn made and go for a quick fix. That is disastrous – Auburn is exhibit A as to how that works in the long run. The new coach must have one key thought: discipline, i.e., my way or the highway. No scum bags allowed on scholarship. No quitters allowed. No chokers allowed. Only boys with high character allowed. When a player tweets something along the lines of that tweeted by # 83 (Washington), he will be automatically dismissed from the team. Time to fix this disaster is NOW!

I want to root for a team that always has a chance. A good chance. A good chance in the championship competition. A good chance to be national champions. I want to wear their colors.

As a graduate of UGA I can’t see myself wearing chickens or gators.

Bad. Bad. Bad.

But, here’s the good part – I’m also a graduate of MTSU! I might as well start wearing my Blue Raider stuff. Middle Tennessee has a better chance of winning the national championship than any team coached by Mr. Richt and Mr. Bobo.

I’m ashamed to be a Bulldog with these coaches.

People who say Mark Richt is a “good man” have their heads on backwards. Good men do a good job! This isn’t a good man, he merely looks good. He’s paid an enormous amount of money and just goes through the motions.

I’ve been thinking about it. “This is just a game,” I say to myself, “Thank God that’s all it is.” Maybe I’m wrong, maybe it’s not a game at all. Maybe it’s a comedy show and we’re supposed to be laughing. Our team is a joke.

No, I’m not wild about how the players played, but I’m not on their case. The joke is the coaches. Why in the world have these terrible coaches been given contract extensions? They should have been fired years ago.

Maybe the joke is that the University does not want a nationally competitive football program.

I will no longer support this football team until changes are made. I cant take this crap anymore. this football program underachieves year after year and our records show it. We all know it has been a long time coming but we have accepted mediocrity for years (even before Richt). We need a complete culture change in Athens to win national titles. It starts with the president of the university (Michael Adams). When is his last day? The new president needs to make changes top to bottom (the entire culture around sports in Athens). There is too much talent coming out of this state to expect anything else!

Like most if not all Dawg fans I am embarrashed with what I saw last night in Columbia, South Carolina. The lack of emotion on Coach Richt’s part I can understand to a certain degree but when you are getting manhandled by another team and your team is lifeless you have to do something to fire up your team. Standing stoically on the sidelines was not working so he needed to step outside the box as he once did against Florida in 2007.

Now as for preparing his team with tough nosed practices we also know why he stopped doing that as the 2008 team was desemiated with injuries but going totally soft hasn’t worked either. The only coach who seems to have any emotion is Grantham and he seems to be the only one who makes in game adjustments. After the fact is 20 – 20 but as i was watching last night and saw that our left tackle could not handle Clowney by himself i kept saying surely the genius BoBo could see this from the pressbox and put in one of those other big OL and line them up next to Gates and put Clowney on his back and slow him down. But I guess that is too much huh like noticing that Murray got hit once and he reverted to chopping his feet and not setting himself for his throws which cost him in missing wide open receivers and other very poor decision making like # 17 running that little slant at the one yard line instead of one yard in the endzone as the play is designed. I could go on and on with my analysis of the things I saw but suffice it to say it was a total meltdown by this team.

I just hope some of the leaders on this team will do as that 2007 team did and get these guys focused on playing tough nosed football and losing like this won’t happen again.

Cry me a freakin river, you sore losers need to get a life. UGA is not going to fire its head coach after every loss. That killer Alabama defense would still be in Tuscaloosa even if Kirby Smart decided to go elsewhere. Kirby is an excellent coach, but he’s merely a part of a larger system at Alabama. Perhaps Coach Smart could build a similar system at Georgia, but he couldn’t do it as an assistant coach.

Looking at Georgia’s recent history with coaching changes, I’d say it’s past time for them to abandon the idea of promoting an assistant coach and to hire a proven head coach instead. UGA would probably be better off with Nutt or Petrino than with Kirby Smart. Kirby needs to start his HC career at a smaller venue and work his way up.

When the coaches stop listening to the fans, the hype and start coaching, UGA will get better. Everybody knew AM wouldn’t have time (and he looked and played nervous). The offense line wasn’t tested. I don’t know what the problem is but Ken Malcome need to be playing more. Those freshmen are exciting but in that type of game, there was a need for yards after contact. You get some of that with Todd but Malcome do that almost every run. Face it, the line is not that good haven’t been for years.. they stacked the box and we couldn’t move them. How many times did Clowney jump over Marshell? The freshmen wasn’t ready for this challenge and played like it. My two cents

Rambo damn near had that pick, but the receiver made a good play to get it back. 5′10 Murray through it into a guy who is 6′8 and it got batted down, and the kick off was a kick off. After you are 21 points down, it changes your game plan, and their D line is built for that. They beat us squarely, but I am not embarrassed by it. Anybody whose ever played sports, know that some games just get away from you. Having said that, I hope we bench Murray so he can’t beat David Greens records hahah

Fact – Mark Richt is the most successful football coach at UGA in his first 11 years. Is he the most succesful coach in NCAA History? Of Course not… but we’re not going to find one by playing Musical Chairs with our coaching staff every time we have a down game. or even a down season.

Except for poor planning[or no preperation], no offense and no defense and, equalled byspecial team play, I thought Georgia did well. I did think that Ogletree and Mitchell had good play. I cant say much for the rest. Murray left his game skills back in Athens.

A 300 avg against top 10 teams
A 500 avg against top 25
Havent beat a ranked opponent in years
2-14 against ranked opponents since 2008
0-10 against top 12 opponents since 2008

Last big time win 2005 against #3 LSU

Cant beat FL 2 years in a row

Cant beat all the SEC east teams in the same year

It’s just amazing that a school that is so focused on football is so crappy at it. The thing that Richt doesn’t get is that even if UGA manages a better record with its cream puff schedule, it DOESN’T DESERVE to represent the SEC East after a performance like last night’s, which was all too like performances from previous seasons against UCF, West Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama, LSU, Boise State …

Here is yet another season where we are left rooting for another SEC team do our dirty work for us. We have never under Richt beat every team in the East and controlled our own destiny, even teams we were better than. So we are always needing either Florida, Tenn, or South Carolina to loose twice so that we can back our way back into the SEC Championship Game. And thats acceptable to this coaching staff led by CMR, because all he has to say is that I have won the East 4 times and 2 SEC Championship. But in reality he never ran the East because we always loose a game or two in this division, alot of the times its to a team we are better than.

Murray’s height and inconsistant play continue to cause him not to be able to get the job done. Because he is so short and combine with the offensive line getting shoved back into his lap, his balls are easily batted down and when he misses he misses high because he has to angle his passes higher than most to keep it from being batted down.

The defense is a joke, no other way to put it. We really have not stop anyone from throwing the ball all year long, even Buffalo and Florida Atlantic had success. I dont know how many times all year we have had receivers running wide open in our secondary. And we continue not to be able to get any pressure on anybody’s QB. I’m sorry but a lot of this is coaching. Gratham just got that healthy new raise and extention, but this defense is worse than any defense in the SEC expecially in the passing game, and we have 9 returning starters.

I just don’t think we will when a National Championship with CMR as the head coach but we will already field a good team and be a top 25 team which is more than a lot of programs can ask for. I like CMR, and I would want my son to play for him because I truly feel like he care about these young men on and off the field. I feel that as long as he is in leadership hear we will never have worry about recruiting violations in the future because he does things the right way. I know that you can do things the right way and win championships but it is such a gamble, when you look at USC, Ohio State, Miami teams who won but are now on probation or was on probation. If they dug deep enough They probably finds something on Auburn with Cam. Don’t know if Saban, Meyer, or Miles are doing anything wrong only time will tell, but even if they are not, look at the egotistical, self centered, arrogant personalities of those guys, and ask yourself is it worth taking a chance on those type of guys.

2nd quarter, 1st and goal inside10, why not put our fullback in and run Gurley or Malcome 4 straight times? No pass plays, no pistol, no spread, no shotgun! Line up in the I and run right at Clowney, not away from him, right at him with blockers and see if they keep us out of the endzone. Why no screens throughout the rest of the game to slow down the pass rush? If Murray is going to run the read option, he has to keep the ball sometimes just so their D-ends know he will run it. That would have kept them from selling out on our backs. Better yet, stay away from the read option. Line up in the I and play football. Why does Murray play his worst in the biggest games? Missed 2 wide open receivers for potential touchdowns. Gates got beat all night, why not slide him inside and put Beard at LT? Certainly could not have done worse than Gates at LT. SC clearly was the better team in EVERY aspect. If they win out, I’ll be pulling for them in the Dome.

He went 11-1 without Herschel in ‘71, won the SEC in ‘66, ‘68 and ‘76 without Herschel, played Pitt for the national championship in the ‘77 Sugar Bowl without Herschel, and the year after Herschel left went 10-1-1 and beat undefeated Texas in the Cotton Bowl.

He also beat Florida and Tech plenty of times without Herschel’s help.

And his record doesn’t have the benefit of all of the cupcakes Richt and other coaches today play.

Dooley was a heck of a coach.

I have made numerous posts on this site and have been an avid Coach Mark Richt supporter. Last night was a failure on the Georgia coaching staff in getting a team ready to play. South Carolina was ready to play and very, very well prepared. They are a good team and deserve all the accolades they are sure to get. I think we are a better team than we showed last night (I sure hope so) but last night exposed a VERY POOR coaching job and that falls squarely on the shoulders of CMR.

Solution: double Nick Saban’s salary and put him on a ten year contract with big raises every year. If you want the best, you have topay top dollar. He is the best coach in college football.

No need for all of the vile posts – it’s only one game – granted, one we hate to lose. Alabama lost one last year too and you didn’t see them tossing the season out over it – you remember how they ended up….it’s discouraging, frustrating and makes us just mad as hell but we really don’t know what goes on in terms of preparation or game time dynamics. All of you “coaches in waiting” are hilarious – you are just so much smarter than our coaching staff – that is why you’re working in a cubicle or answering phone calls for J.C. Penney’s customer service division – just sit down and shut up. Having said all of that – we have no D / something is missing in that unit this year – it looks like maybe we need a refund on Grantham’s contract – Tennessee should have been the warning shot across the bow. Defense wins championships – get used to the fact that we will have a very nice year and that will probably be it. Florida is playing well and has a good D and so unless we are hiding our defensive starters somewhere and haven’t played them yet, that game is not looking good right now. This game is over, in the books, no need to wet your diapers over it. Time to move on and work for what is still on the table. Here’s hoping we find a defense somewhere before Jacsonville. Go Dawgs!

Will Trane

Defense. We have no defense ends, and we have not had them for awhile. Ask the d line coach where he has been lately re recruiting. Why did we zone Carolina so much. Grantham had a very poor defensive game plan. Spurrier put the ball up deep on three plays. Two should have been intercepted. This iw what happens when your head coach does not manage a roster. And you have players constantly suspended and miss 4 games of playing time. For Rambo is looked like his first game back. Any NFL coach would be unwise to consider this guy for any playing time. Does not show up in game and misses a fourth of the season. Why have players like this on your roster. Saban, Spurrier, Muschamp, Miles,or any other SEC coache would put up with this.
Offense. Can not put a game in Murray’s hands to win. They have been down that road before. Bama, Ole Miss, Florida, Carolina, LSU, Missy State…all understand it is the offensive line play that counts in the SEC. You can talk D all you want, but SEC champions have O lines. The Dawgs blocking, schemes, and game plan re the O line is substandard in the SEC. Plus Bobo does not understand point of attack in blocking and creating running lanes. Look at the center. Too small for SEC.top defenses. Have running backs but has no rotation on the line and does little rotation with backs. For years our running backs coach has done a very poor job re pass blocking with backs. Has a fresh set of faces each season because we can never keep them on a roster.
Richt fails with roster management, game preparation, and game plan
If the Athletic Board and AD think this is a successful coach, staff, and program then they need to take a long hard look at the result of games against top SEC teams. Can start with last night, go back to the SEC title game, 2011 Carolina game and Boise game.
Mark Richt and staff need to go.
Look at the coach at MSU or Florida’s OC.

The big game now for the coaching staff is Florida, if Georgia plays like they did last night against the Gators then a coaching change is in order. I recommend Georgia schedule at least one top notch program on their non-conference schedule every season play them early to avoid debacles in conference play. Also they need to play Alabama more often to toughen up themselves for post season. What you do early on isn’t as important as what you do later on meaning early non-conference cream puffs leads to 35-7 conference defeats later on.

The benchmark for NCAAF is the national championship. Make it or not there should be no other goal. Richt’s benchmark every year is the SEC east championship. Which is great if you are Vanderbilt…not Georgia. This is what he considers a successful “keep your job” season. Set your goals low and you will never be disappointed and your job is safe. If you can only reach your already low goals if the rest of the division is un-ranked it is time for change. Based on last night’s game Florida will demolish us. Richt needs to at least pretend he is interested in a less than mediocre goal. 3 Million should be buying us a BCS chance not financing mediocrity.

Press statement of a loser:
“First of all, like I told the team the bad news is we took a whipping,” Richt said. “I told them the good news was we all took it together. I don’t think anybody could look in the mirror and say: ‘I had a great day but the other boys didn’t.’ I don’t think either side of the ball could say: ‘We did our job and the other boys didn’t.’ It was a team loss. We got beat by a very good team that was primed and ready to go.”
Key Pointsof this statement:
1. It is strange that he had to tell his team that the “bad news is we took a whipping,” I hope they did not think it was good news
2.It is OK to lose as long as we are all losers.
3. It is OK to have a “team” of losers
4. The USC coaches actually prepared themselves and their players for a game with BCS implications…That Idea did not occur to us.
5. SEC football is like T-ball or church camp just show up and everyone gets a trophy.
6. Richt also added “Good things can still happen”…only if space aliens abduct the Gators

Just look at Richt’s record against ranked teams over the last several years. They put that graphic up last night on the telecast and it shocked me at how futile our efforts have been. Further I believe we will continue to be a mediocre team and program until Mark Richt is gone. I have not been a Richt basher like some of our brethern but I think that he has brought us as far as he is capable of taking us. In order for us to go to the next level and become an elite team and program we need to hire a new young coach with fire in his belly and a vision as to how we can win a championship. And don’t even get me started on Bobo. Just another no decision that Richt hasn’t been able to make like not firing Martinez until it was almost too late. I like Mark Richt as a peron and I admire his Christian principles but he is not the man to win us a national Championship. If it was not to be this year then when? Are we going to be satisfied forever with 10 win seasons and an annual trip to the Capital One Bowl to play the Big 10? I hope not.

Mobile Dawg, It is clear our program lacks something other than talent. My primary issue is with Bobo. 1st and goal in the 2nd quarter, why not put Hall in at FB and run Gurley or Malcome 4 straight times. They are the most powerful backs. Stop playing soft by running out of the spread especially when our line was getting whipped. 4th and 3, why not run a 5 yard pass pattern to get the 1st down and not a 20 yard back shoulder throw? Finishing 10-1 or 10-2 with this much talent is a travesty. Next year we lose way too much talent to be competitive in the east. By the way, where is Ray Drew and why does Jay Rome not have a bigger role in the offense? What backer could cover him? Ugh!

This is what happens when you play a weak schedule – you aren’t prepared by fire for the big games. I didn’t see a lot of difference in last night’s D than any Willie Martinez coached. Many of these guys are already cashing NFL checks it seems. Last, I’ve seen a live game this year in both Columbia and Athens – Bulldog fans just aren’t hungry anymore. No is afraid of coming to Athens; and, all we can celebrate is highlights from 1980, Hershel and Larry Munson. We are searching for an identity; we are searching for leadership.

Other schools have arrests also. If Richt had Meyer’s drug policy, none of our kids would have missed a game. Meyer won 2 NC’s with multiple off-field behavior issues. Look at Spurrier and Stephen Garcia. I don’t fault the coaching staff for player misconduct, I would fault the coaching staff if there were no consequences of misconduct.

A good defense is held in check and on their heels against a balanced attack. When both run and passing game are effective with a dual threat QB, even great defenses are immobilized to some extent. Murray plays his game and he’s very capable, we win this one cruising in the 4th qtr.

Here is your flaw dawgnation, Dooley had winning records against Fla, Sc, Tenn and Ga tech and was 500 against Au. Richt has a great winning percentage against cupcakes and Gt. Stats do not always tell the entire story. It is not always about the losses so much as it is who one loses to; that is the bigger question. As far as this misguided Kirby Smart for HC–please. Saban is the brains in that organization and I see him yelling at Smart as well as players–Smart is not HC material. Muschamp seemed to get in trouble with Saban very little when they were together at LSU. That suggests Muschamp understood things better than Smart–so let us look for a proven HC with winning capabilities on the grand stages of college football–I would prefer little Dooley over Smart–People who know football can see the improvement of both Fla and Tenn. So let’s be cautious and not hire some joke like Smart or Donnan or Goof. This next hire is going to have a great deal of work to do to get the losing mentality changed at UGA.

Bobo Press Statement:
On what he thought Georgia could do offensively heading in: “I thought we’d be able to run the ball a little bit better than we did in the first half. We were not successful with that. We thought we’d have some guys open if we could protect. There were times when we protected and we didn’t complete the passes and times we didn’t protect. We had a plan for Clowney of chipping him and things like that but those guys did a great job of getting to the quarterback. Just had us on our heels all night. You’ve got to give that defense credit.”
Key Points:
1. We could not run or throw against them …because thier Defensive Cordinator is smarter than me.
2. I was and still am completely clueless on how to beat SC, even though it is my job to figure this stuff out.
3. Clowney is big and mean and ruined the 5 minutes I spent preparing for this game.
4. “You’ve got to give that defense credit.” ….Just don’t fire me because I am not very good at my job.

Dawg Tired

October 7th, 2012

DawgNation – You don’t seem to understand. Its not the loss that has every body upset. It’s the lack of effort, lack of preparation, lack of discipline, lack of emotion, etc. I was a season ticket holder when I lived in Georgia during the Dooley years. I never saw a Dooley team give up. I never saw a Dooley team that was not well prepared in all three facets of the game. After Coach Richt had a team meeting between the third and fourth quarters last night, the defense actually showed less intensity. To me, that speaks volumes. The point is it seems rather obvious that he does not have the respect of the players. It is also obvious that the team does not react well to adversity. Our 5 wins have come against very poor teams. Missouri lost to Vandy at home last night. SUNY Buffalo is terrible. FAU – enough said. Tennessee is not very good. Last night was predictable, but the Vandy game fooled many of us into thinking this team just might actually be good in spite of the evidence to the contrary we had seen in those other games. Our linemen, both on offense and defense, are fat and slow. Compare the lineman for USCe. Much quicker, athletic, etc. Clowney should be thankful he did not come to UGA. He would be just another fat guy by now because we would have had him in our WEIGHT TRAINING PROGRAM which apparently focuses on the WEIGHT part of the deal. We can flat out put weight on a kid. He may show up sleek and athletic, but with time we can make him fat and slow.

I could go on, but why? If you can’t see what’s happening, it is useless trying to get you to understand.

But when it comes to SEC play you’ve got one loss. Does that mean the season’s over for Georgia? No, we still have an opportunity to keep fighting and keep playing better and winning. And if we’re able to do that we have a chance to get back to Atlanta. We’re definitely not giving up on that thought.”
Key Points:
1. Embarrassing your employer (UGA) and all of the fans is ok it is only one loss.
2. I have no intention of ever competing for a BCS championship because one loss is OK.
3. The rest of our schedule except for Florida is easy so I should be able to keep my Job.

To put things into perspective, Vandy should of beat SC. That’s how unprepared we were last night. Look SC is a good team, not great. I would not be surprised if they lost their next two. It just had a big game stamp on it. For some reason we just can’t do anything in big games anymore. Our goal at Georgia is to win national championships. Not winning big games means its never going to happen with Richt. Time to find the right guy that can do something with all this talent.

Football 101. You slow defensive penetation by pitchouts and screens. The one pitchout we ran went for 15 yards — then it was abandoned. There were no screens. Richt’s/Bobo’s offensive scheme actually works against our defense. Too many low percentage long passes put is in “long” situations, works against establishing an offensive rhythm and keeps the defense on the field. We play a game as separate units — the UGA offense and the UGA defense, not as a team.

Duluth Dawg 12

I just want to say a few things about the game;

1) That was the worst job I have seen getting a team ready for a big game in my 43 years on this planet.
2) There was absolutely no adjustments made by Bobo or Grantham to counter USC’s scheme.
3) USC coaching staff totally outcoached the UGA staff.

I put this loss squarely on the shoulders of the UGA coaches. A change needs to be made ASAP, CMR cannot win a big game or beat quality opponents even though he has equal or better talent. No excuse for this!

PTC: “i have never heard an announcer have to apologize for the play of a team! And this played out on national TV. you know CBS would love to get us off for the Florida game. there is only one answer for this total and complete collapse.”

I’ve never heard announcers criticize a team like that either. It was just so obvious that they couldn’t avoid commenting on it. C’mon, when the announcers ream the team a new one, it’s time for wholesale changes.

Go back and look at Mark Richt’s successes at UGA and then look at what was happening at other programs when he achieved those successes. The sad truth is that Richt has never beaten a powerful team during an up year. He only backed into his two SEC championships when other programs were down. And even then, he did not sweep his own division (he lost to UF both times).

I can’t believe that anyone would recommend Bobby Petrino as a head coach. Did you not see how his personal failings sank two teams in less than 5 years? Also, where does the idea of John Gruden come from? Sure, he won in the NFL but did he go out on top? NO, and while certainly informative and entertaining as a commentator, he’s really all about “John Gruden” and has no college head coaching experience.

My graduate degree has not prepared me for this. As I sit here I am truly vexed about the situation we as BULLDOGS find ourselves in . CMR is truly loved by many including my wife and I. If I were the parent of a potential player my thoughts would go something like this. If he had NFL size and speed CMR would probably help him attain his dream of being in the NFL. The NFL is replete with such men. If my son’s goal was to win a NC it is simply not going to happen at GA. CMR has a truly balanced life between family, work and ministry. He is not going to sleep at the office in order to obtain a NC. Its just not going to happen. He loves his wife, children and ministries. If my son wanted the NC I would send him the LSU or Alabama and now even South Carolina. As I said I am vexed. Do I want my son to learn under a Saban where he may develop traits that insure ultimate success in and on the field but lack a balanced life or do I want him to make all of his kids games, have date nights with his wife and reach out to others. It is truely vexing. I have part of me as a Georgia fan that wants the early 80’s where we were a true power house and this is offset by how much I know that each mom and dad of the current players appreciates the investment CMR is making in the future of their child. As I said it is vexing.

The problem here is the Program, we have the talent alabama and LSU have to be a national contender. The problem is Coaching period….. The 1980 team had “HEART” and pride and believed in each other that they could win. The reason was a good coach. Dooley was a real coach just like Nick saben and Bear bryant.. “I’m tired of Religion Richt!!” God has its place in church and so does preaching!!! Ok, I know this want looked bad…. Real bad. I have read a whole bunch of posts on here that slam Richt and the coaching staff for this loss and perhaps you all are justified. However, I am not going to, and I hope the team doesn’t, let this game slow them down this season. O-line will get better. The defense will return. My main concern was with Murray in this game. It is really hard to score points when your QB can’t hit the broad side of a barn with his passes. I saw T.King was open 786 times and Murray sailed it over his head. The defense let a couple of ones go early, but it is hard to keep it up when your offense is on the field for the entire game. This loss lies squarely on the shoulders of Aaron Murray and not the coaches. At some point Murray is going to have to win a big game and quit being such a vag when the good teams are on the field. Pick it up dawgs and win the rest of ‘em to shut up the Richt nay sayers.

that is so true, the players don’t really care. They hold their heads down in defeat. The 1980 team always kept a positive outlook on a win or loss. The Heart and passion is not in the players to play their hearts out every game because its not in the coaches to teach it… Eirk Russell use to bang heads with the defensive players to get them fired up. We need a coach that wants to get on that field with those players and show them how to hit hard and play hard every minute of the game until its over. This will never happen with a Mark Richt or Mike Bobo… Hell Pat Dye of auburn would be my first choice over a mark richt. I remember coaches like Johnny Majors of tennessee and the Pat Dye’s of auburn. They were great coaches that had the heart and passion to teach their players…. Its just not there at Georgia anymore….

I’m an alum, I was a freshman 20 years ago exactly, the tide rose until the day Gameday was set up outside my old Meyers dorm, that was the high point, Moreno, Stafford, and the black jerseys, the wave crashed that night and rolled back. As good as it’s ever going to get. I was actually excited about this year, about yesterday. I thought it would be a good show. It was the Blackout game, it was the GA/FLA 08, it was GA/FLA 09, it was LSU in last year’s title game, it was game 3 of the college world series, just another in a series of reminders that Georgia doesn’t win big ones.

So yeah, I was proud once, but I’ve gotten too old to waste any more time believing in this nonsense.

Sorry bud, but when your 2-14 against ranked opponents thats not quarter backs, thats coaching.. Your blind because you don’t see the real picture here. Its coaching partner, it always has been. Look at the 2002 team we had. The florida game. Again Richt did not prepare his team… Stop blaming the players, yes our quarter back had a bad night, but if it was the players losing 14 times to ranked opponents then I would agree with you.. Numbers don’t lie Richt is not cut out to win the big games he’s suppose to win. He is not preparing them the players in practice or on the field like he should.

JaxDog,

I am with you on Richt’s good qualities being appealing.

The thing is…he is a football coach.

He should be teaching these kids how to play football.
That includes how to discipline yourself, how to set priorites, etc.

The question is…does he do that as well as he should?

Another question…how many marginal talents could have been better coached to make it into the NFL?

He might teach balance…he might teach you how to be a good young man.

But he is failing as a football coach if his teams play this poorly in big games.

Let’s say it again. Very embarrassing. UGA looked pathetic. Too much talent on that team for such a horrrible showing. The D has not shown up the entire season and the OL can only block against a weaker team. The OC had no game plan and still can’t make adjustments and the DC couldn’t make adjustments either. The S & c still needs addressing. UGA got manhandled by a much more physica and stronger team. Time to make some changes in the HC. Richt said that they didn’t put up a goose egg. What kind of idiot coach would make a statement like that on the night of the most embarrassing showing ever. A top 5 team was a joke. They have the talent, just not the leadership. The ship started sinking in the Tenn. game. How can a defense go from being a top five unit and lose one player to the draft and look this horrible and will look even worse next year. Still not bringing in enough talented CB. The DBs looked horrible and UGA has being vulnerable against the pass for a long time. Might need to hire a new OL Coach as well. Friend is not getting the job done. UGA had and opportunity to restore themselves to prominance and blew it.

Of all people posting here, with your handle, you know that the 1980 team didn’t lose a game. The loss last night must have really knocked you out of your mind. But really, I disagree with your whole premise, that because this year’s team, as you put it, “held their heads down in defeat”, indicates they don’t care. How can a player like Rambo be so under motivated as to let a receiver take an obvious interception away. Murray. Clearly has no clue but for the coaches to play him and let others sit or transfer—really.
And if he is our best hope then what does that say about recruiting. Redshirting for him to turn pro–

Their program was Kiffin – decimated and he has already gotten them respect – more than what we enjoy with our highly touted players.

Richt, Bobo and Grantham would have been fired by Bama, Auburn, UF and UT long ago. In fact, the last time three of those schools fired their non performing coaching staff they ended up winning conference and / or BCS Titles.

Dazed & Confused football should no longer be acceptable at UGA. Spend some of that excess cash for an excellent coach like South Carolina did.

The reality is understanding what you are willing to accept and what can be provided. Richt is a nice guy and a brilliant recruiter. He is the type of person that comes into a recruit’s home and a parent will turn their son over to for 4 years. However, few coaches can maintain their edge for more than 6 to 8 years and I believe CMR has lost that edge. He is loyal and kind, and has been too loyal to his staff. Willie Martinez was a D coordinator for one of the most visible programs in the nation. He remains unemployed yet CMR stood by him. Apparently CMR has great instincts when it comes to recruiting players but not coaches? I believe what we have is misplaced blame. Every team’s personality must ultimately reflect its coach, Saban, Spurrier, Miles, Muschamp, their teams are a reflection of their personality, intensity, and limited patience for mistakes. UGA reflects its coach as well. CMR is kind, forgiving, and retrospective. So are his players . . . that converts to 35-7 against a team and a coach that is none of those things.

Bulldog Fans – no question that Richt is a class guy and a good Coach. Problem is the fanbase doesn’t seem content in aiming for “good”, and agree that a new HC may be an answer. Maybe there’s a guy, full of youthful vigor and who has already had some success in the SEC, who is just west of you? What if you were to offer Vandy a lunch trade for their HC? Now he and Grantham would need to hug it out from 2011 heated moment, but you’d then have some guys with fire in their bellies leading your highly talented team. Just a thought – what other HC’s out there make more sense to the fans? You simply don’t want to take a step backward as we all know there ARE alot worse men and HC’s out there than Mark Richt. (exhibit A – see Booby Petrino!)

To Dawg Tired: EXCELLENT post and the truth in what you have written (pasted portion below) is pretty profound…

Lattimore said, “we hit them in the mouth on the first play and they never recovered.” I think he said something even more important. Great teams dictate the tempo in big games. Our Dawgs seem comfortable in counter punching……certainly not the player’s fault. Come on coaches……don’t you remember your competitiveness when you played. Where’s the emotion……this is college not professional.

It cannot just be “short” QB’s. Russel Wilson and Drew Breeze have showed that. Bill, we are outmanned in the trenches. Until we get serious about good linemen, all else is for naught. S.C. whipped us up front like a dollar-watch on the spin cycle…pure and simple. If we played them again next week, they would whip us again up front. Every good team (and it took LSU until 1/2 time last year to exploit it) has whipped us up front. We sign great skill players, and have a second tier o-line. All the play calling, etc. will not cure that. If we had Alabama’s line, we could win about every game. Everybody looks good whan the trench-warriors are the real deal!

Bill,
I need your comment on our o-line……….it is really not good and makes everything else look bad! (Of course they look good against the patsies.) But really, why with all our other recruits can we not get some real, SEC linemen. Muschamp has passed us, Spurrier is WAY past us, and (laugh if you want) but Dooley will soon pass us…………..because they are all smart enough to start up front!
