Richt got one thing right: Dogs’ performance against the Gamecocks was ‘embarrassing’

The Dogs dared Connor Shaw to throw deep on them, and he did just that. (Bob Andres / AJC)

The Dogs dared Connor Shaw to throw deep on them, and he did just that. (Bob Andres / AJC)

If you had deliberately set out to script a completely nightmarish first quarter for Georgia against South Carolina, where just about everything went wrong for Mark Richt’s Bulldogs, you couldn’t have come up with anything more demoralizing for the Bulldog Nation than what transpired Saturday night in Columbia.

It was a complete failure on the part of Georgia’s defense, offense and special teams right from the get-go, with the first quarter being the worst a Richt team has looked since the infamous “Blackout” loss to Alabama in 2008.

On the first series of the game, Todd Grantham’s defense loaded the box to try and slow Gamecocks running back Marcus Lattimore, who had feasted on the Dawgs the past two years, daring Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw to use his arm and go deep to beat them. Which he proceeded to do on the second offensive play of the game, hitting Damiere Byrd on a 42-yard pass on which Bacarri Rambo went for and missed the interception.

Shortly after that Shaw found Bruce Ellington wide open in the Georgia end zone and the Cocks were up 7-0.

Georgia got a great kickoff return from Malcolm Mitchell, helped by a flag against South Carolina, but hopes that the Dogs could keep up with the Gamecocks fizzled on Georgia’s third offensive play as an Aaron Murray pass was deflected (which would turn out to be a frequent occurrence on this night) and intercepted. That turnover led to the Gamecocks scoring a second touchdown — on another play on which Georgia’s suspect pass coverage again left a receiver uncovered.

Then it was time for the Bulldogs’ special team collapse of the night, with a punt returned all the way by the Gamecocks’ Ace Sanders for a touchdown.

So, with less than 10 minutes having elapsed in the first quarter, South Carolina was already up 21-0.

The second quarter saw Georgia briefly threaten to get back into the contest when the Dawgs put together their one sustained drive of the half, finally lining up first and goal inside the Carolina 10 thanks to a great catch by Mitchell.

First down saw Todd Gurley bull his way to the Carolina 2.

Then Mike Bobo decided he wanted to try and score in the most conservative (and predictable) way possible and called another Gurley run into the line that gained a mere yard.

On third down, Murray tried to force a dangerous pass that fell incomplete. Rather than take 3 points, Georgia rightly decided to go for it on fourth down, but for some reason Murray threw a pass in front of the goal line rather than to one of his receivers in the end zone and ended up short — and with no points to show for an 80-yard, 15-play effort.

The game was essentially over at that point, although the second half saw the Gamecocks add a couple more touchdowns and give up one in garbage time as a determined Boo Malcome ran hard against Carolina’s second-string defense to avert a shutout.

The South Carolina defense had its way with Aaron Murray most of the night. (Bob Andres / AJC)

The South Carolina defense had its way with Aaron Murray most of the night. (Bob Andres / AJC)

The main storyline of the evening was this: The Gamecocks’ defensive line dominated the Dogs’ offensive front all night, shutting down the “Gurshall” running attack and constantly harassing Murray, who had one of his shakiest performances in quite some time.

And while Grantham’s defense eventually slowed down the Carolina juggernaut a bit, there was no denying that early on they looked absolutely clueless as Shaw directed the Gamecocks’ offense just about perfectly.

So, once again, a Richt team that had soared into the Top 5 by beating lesser nonconference and midlevel SEC opponents came a cropper when it faced a good team.

It was a performance so flat and lifeless that ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit termed it “shocking.”

Actually, not so shocking for anyone who’s watched Richt teams in recent years repeatedly show up looking unprepared and unmotivated whenever they face a Top 10 opponent.

As the Georgia head coach himself put it after the game, it was bad enough that the Dogs lost, but “the way we lost hurts and is embarrassing as well.”

The emphasis there should be on embarrassing.

Feel free to share your own views on Georgia’s complete failure in Columbia.

I want to root for a team that always has a chance. A good chance. A good chance in the championship competition. A good chance to be national champions. I want to wear their colors.

As a graduate of UGA I can’t see myself wearing chickens or gators.

Bad. Bad. Bad.

But, here’s the good part – I’m also a graduate of MTSU! I might as well start wearing my Blue Raider stuff. Middle Tennessee has a better chance of winning the national championship than any team coached by Mr. Richt and Mr. Bobo.

I’m ashamed to be a Bulldog with these coaches.

People who say Mark Richt is a “good man” have their heads on backwards. Good men do a good job! This isn’t a good man, he merely looks good. He’s paid an enormous amount of money and just goes through the motions.

I’ve been thinking about it. “This is just a game,” I say to myself, “Thank God that’s all it is.” Maybe I’m wrong, maybe it’s not a game at all. Maybe it’s a comedy show and we’re supposed to be laughing. Our team is a joke.

No, I’m not wild about how the players played, but I’m not on their case. The joke is the coaches. Why in the world have these terrible coaches been given contract extensions? They should have been fired years ago.

Maybe the joke is that the University does not want a nationally competitive football program.

Richt and bobo has to go!!!! Richt tells his guys it’s ok to lose!! But the longer he stays to worse it will get!!! Murray is a joke!! Choke artist!!! When you have 2 very respectable icons like Kirk and Brent throwing ur coach under the bus someone must see it! There is no fire left in mark Richt!!! 0-10 vs ranked teams!! R u kidding me!!!! He has to go!!!!!! He has a weak buyout and let’s go after a coach with fire!!!! Uga will never ever win a national championship with him at the helm!! Saban would have won 4 bcs title games with Uga talent!!! Mark Richt has to go!! Everybody has to go! It’s time to rebuild!!!!!! If u see it another way ur a moron!!! Winning is the number 1 thing in sports and mark Richt doesn’t see it that way! Go get Smart, Peterson anybody with passion and fire!!! Mark Richt has to go!!!!! Since 2005 sec Champioship game Richt has failed to win the big games!! And don’t say Hawaii !!!!! Change has to come now!!!

There wasn’t but one player on the UGA team last night who could have broken SCs two deep…Malcolm Mitchell.

I will no longer support this football team until changes are made. I cant take this crap anymore. this football program underachieves year after year and our records show it. We all know it has been a long time coming but we have accepted mediocrity for years (even before Richt). We need a complete culture change in Athens to win national titles. It starts with the president of the university (Michael Adams). When is his last day? The new president needs to make changes top to bottom (the entire culture around sports in Athens). There is too much talent coming out of this state to expect anything else!

We also threw in the towel on punt returns as a weapon when we put McGowan back there – no disrespect to him but look at punt returners on other teams- does he resemble them? We are passive, not aggressive. We play for the fair catch.

Like most if not all Dawg fans I am embarrashed with what I saw last night in Columbia, South Carolina. The lack of emotion on Coach Richt’s part I can understand to a certain degree but when you are getting manhandled by another team and your team is lifeless you have to do something to fire up your team. Standing stoically on the sidelines was not working so he needed to step outside the box as he once did against Florida in 2007.

Now as for preparing his team with tough nosed practices we also know why he stopped doing that as the 2008 team was desemiated with injuries but going totally soft hasn’t worked either. The only coach who seems to have any emotion is Grantham and he seems to be the only one who makes in game adjustments. After the fact is 20 – 20 but as i was watching last night and saw that our left tackle could not handle Clowney by himself i kept saying surely the genius BoBo could see this from the pressbox and put in one of those other big OL and line them up next to Gates and put Clowney on his back and slow him down. But I guess that is too much huh like noticing that Murray got hit once and he reverted to chopping his feet and not setting himself for his throws which cost him in missing wide open receivers and other very poor decision making like # 17 running that little slant at the one yard line instead of one yard in the endzone as the play is designed. I could go on and on with my analysis of the things I saw but suffice it to say it was a total meltdown by this team.

I just hope some of the leaders on this team will do as that 2007 team did and get these guys focused on playing tough nosed football and losing like this won’t happen again.

The bulldogs played horrible last night, truly horrible. The only thing that looks worse than the way our team played last night is the attitude of the so-called “Fans” who post on this blog. Cry me a freakin river, you sore losers need to get a life. UGA is not going to fire its head coach after every loss. The NY Giants lost 7 games last year, going 9-7, before pulling it together at the end of the year and winning the SuperBowl. Did their team suck? Should they have fired 7 coaches before the playoffs? Seriously, the losers who post here need to get a life. If Richt is such a bad coach I would like for someone to point out **ANY** UGA Head coach who has done better. You’ll be searching through stats for awhile, and you wont find one.

“I know it’s just dreaming, but imagine if Kirby Smart did nothing more than implement that killer Alabama defense here?”

That killer Alabama defense would still be in Tuscaloosa even if Kirby Smart decided to go elsewhere. Kirby is an excellent coach, but he’s merely a part of a larger system at Alabama. Perhaps Coach Smart could build a similar system at Georgia, but he couldn’t do it as an assistant coach.

Looking at Georgia’s recent history with coaching changes, I’d say it’s past time for them to abandon the idea of promoting an assistant coach and to hire a proven head coach instead. UGA would probably be better off with Nutt or Petrino than with Kirby Smart. Kirby needs to start his HC career at a smaller venue and work his way up.

When the coaches stop listening to the fans, the hype and start coaching, UGA will get better. Everybody knew AM wouldn’t have time (and he looked and played nervous). The offense line wasn’t tested. I don’t know what the problem is but Ken Malcome need to be playing more. Those freshmen are exciting but in that type of game, there was a need for yards after contact. You get some of that with Todd but Malcome do that almost every run. Face it, the line is not that good haven’t been for years.. they stacked the box and we couldn’t move them. How many times did Clowney jump over Marshell? The freshmen wasn’t ready for this challenge and played like it. My two cents

Look people, this is what happens in sports. Rambo damn near had that pick, but the receiver made a good play to get it back. 5′10 Murray through it into a guy who is 6′8 and it got batted down, and the kick off was a kick off. After you are 21 points down, it changes your game plan, and their D line is built for that. They beat us squarely, but I am not embarrassed by it. Anybody whose ever played sports, know that some games just get away from you. Having said that, I hope we bench Murray so he can’t beat David Greens records hahah

@dogfan — Nick Saban has done something special at Alabama, no doubt. I guess every other coach in NCAA needs to be fired and every university needs to hire Nick Saban.

Fact – Mark Richt is the most successful football coach at UGA in his first 11 years. Is he the most succesful coach in NCAA History? Of Course not… but we’re not going to find one by playing Musical Chairs with our coaching staff every time we have a down game. or even a down season.

Kirby Smart is not the answer. Someone please write this down for future reference. UGA needs a proven head coaching commodity. With that being said, Richt is in for another 3 years so the point is mute. If Georgia loses Richt the program will be back to the Goff era. Be careful what you wish for.

KIRBY SMART, KIRBY SMART, KIRBY SMART………. I WILL TAKE HALF OF WHAT ST.RICK
IS MAKING. MCGARITY DO YOU HEAR THE WORDS THAT ARE COMING OUT OF MY MOUTH.
SORRY. . ALL-AMERICAN RAMBO A.K.A. POT BROWNIE IS A JOKE. BOBO MUST BE GOOD FRIENDS WITH ALAN INGRAM.. THIS KID BELONGS @ A DIVISION 3 SCHOOL, NOT A SEC SCHOOL. WE NEED SOME HARD NOSE COACH TO COME IN AND SHOW SOME ATTITUDE ON THE SIDELINE, NOT ONE WHOS THINKING ABOUT HIS NEXT MISSION TRIP. RICHT… PLEASE DO DAWGNATION AND TRUE BLACK N RED BLEEDERS A FAVOR. PASS THE TORCH, YOU HAVE MADE YOUR MILLIONS … GO PARTY AND TAKE BOBO’ S FAMILY WITH YOU.. GOD I MISS THE DAYS WHEN TEAMS WERE SCARED TO PLAY US BECAUSE THEY KNEW THEY WERE IN FOR A DAWG FIGHT.. NOBODY FEARS US NOW. ERK… WE MISS YOU ……

“@Flat Tire — I should be more clear… name 1 UGA coach that has been more successful in his first 11 years. The simple fact is there isn’t one, not even Dooley who everyone seems to admire so much. I’m honestly not worried about National Titles under the flawed BCS system that will be obsolete and replaced in 2 years.”

Appreciate your loyalty, but the truth is that I’ve been lucky. ;)

Well, once again the Tech fans are onthe UGA bolg because UGA finally lost a game. UGA could lose the rest of their games & still beat Tech for the …um… 11th time in 12 years??? Uh.. I think, but actually lost count. And for all of those S.Carolina fans.. Good game. You beat the brakes off of a over-rated UGA team. You’re still not N’Championship material, sorry. To a program that’s never won a SEC Championship and sets it’s goal for the entire year by beating UGA – Mission acomplished. Enjoy you HIGH.. It should last another 5.5 days.
