Fan talk: Richt wants a ‘Redout’ and what’s gotten into Bobo?

spread the redA caller to the “Bulldog Hotline” this week suggested a “Redout” by fans for Saturday’s game against Tennessee. Mark Richt has enthusiastically endorsed the idea through social media and in an athletic department press release in which he said, “We need the Bulldog Nation to get there early on Saturday for the Dawg Walk, wear red, and get loud enough to shake the Hedges.”

So there are your marching orders, Bulldog Nation.

Now, let’s get to some of this week’s Junkyard Mail …

Travis Cole writes: Hey Bill, I love the Blawg! Two things. First off, I have to say that I have been thoroughly impressed with Coach [Mike] Bobo’s play calling this year. At times it has seemed like the same old Dawgs, get a lead, run the clock. But in the last two games, especially, Bobo has seemed much more willing to be aggressive in his play calling and I think the players are responding. Second, I have had the good fortune to attend five games in Athens and have always enjoyed myself. But my friend Charlie has never been able to see a game in person because of health issues, despite being a Dawg fan for the better part of 50+ years. He is confined to an electric wheelchair and I was wondering what sort of accommodations Sanford had for wheelchairs and such. If there is anything you know and could point me in the right direction I would be extremely grateful since Charlie was a HUGE influence in me becoming a proud Georgia fan.

Mike Bobo has introduced a few new wrinkles this season. (University of Georgia)

Mike Bobo has introduced a few new wrinkles this season. (University of Georgia)

Thanks, Travis. As I’ve noted several times this season, Bobo’s play calling has been pretty impressive. And he’s also mixing it up a bit more than last year, when ESPN’s Todd McShay called his offense “vanilla,” adding in four- and five-receiver “rifle” alignments, adopting the sort of toss LSU uses in lieu of a handoff, and most recently putting Aaron Murray in the short shotgun formation known as the “pistol.” So far, so good, as Georgia leads the SEC in scoring offense and total yards. Receiver Marlon Brown was asked this week by the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer what has gotten into Bobo and he replied, “I don’t know, but I like it, whatever it is.”

I do, too.

Murray said he thought Bobo was simply adapting to the talent he has. “You run an offense based on what you have, and if we have tons of receivers, which we do, you want to spread teams out and be able to use your weapons. … I think right now we have so many options, so much talent, he has the ability to spread things out and try new things.”

As for your friend, UGA does indeed sell wheelchair tickets and it makes allowances for patrons using the chairs. You can check out the rules here. Hope Charlie gets to go to a game!

Scott Watson writes: Hi Bill, With the “Red Out” being pushed by Coach Richt, do you think we will see any uniform variations for this Saturday’s game?

I doubt it very much. The call for Georgia fans to wear red fits in with the Dawgs’ standard home red jerseys. By the way, on the “Bulldog Hotline” radio call-in show where the idea originated, Richt was asked if Georgia would wear black jerseys at any point this season and he said no, because “we didn’t order any this year.”

Andrew Smith writes: Bill, I am taking the liberty to think ahead to USC, or just SC as Dabo would say, even though we have to beat Tennessee first. I see the matchup as very even in most regards if not slightly in favor of the Dawgs. As you have mentioned, one thing that scares me is the tendency of Spurrier’s minions to make the most of a special teams hiccup. I am particularly concerned in punt receiving/returns. I hope that Malcolm Mitchell will make more seasoned decisions and wisely chooses when to display his athletic ability.

Richt expressed concern this week about both the decision-making on punt returns and about Marshall Morgan banging in PATs off the goalposts, so the issue is definitely on his radar. Richt indicated that if Mitchell continues to make questionable punt-receiving decisions, Rhett McGowan (who also has received punts the past couple of games) might get the nod as the regular return man. Based on what I’ve seen of him so far, I’d have no problem with that at all. But whoever they put back there, it’s mainly a matter of not being indecisive and always being aware of where you are on the field. Mitchell needs to improve on both counts.

Jay Rome is likely to become a bigger part of the offense as the season progresses. (University of Georgia)

Jay Rome is likely to become a bigger part of the offense as the season progresses. (University of Georgia)

Stewart Hunt writes: Bill, Coming into this season, two of the major concerns were the offensive line and tight end positions. So far, the OL has answered the call. However, against Vanderbilt, it looked like Arthur Lynch missed a few routes and was chastised for it by Murray (in addition to dropping a well thrown ball by Murray). The TV commentators even mentioned it at one point. This week no one has addressed it in the media. What is your take on our TE situation? Big fan of your blog. Go Dawgs.

Thanks, Stewart. I think tight end is still a work in progress for the Dawgs. In the short term, Lynch is likely to remain the starter because he’s the more experienced blocker, but both Lynch and Jay Rome have been doing good work blocking, especially for the running backs. As the season progresses, Bobo may have greater need of the option of throwing to the tight ends and that’s where Rome might get the chance to shine. His development no doubt was hampered by a hamstring injury in preseason practice, but he caught a 15-yard pass in the Missouri game and those of us who were at the G-Day game remember the athletic catch he made on a long touchdown pass.

AMR writes: Whoever is responsible for keeping the [Georgia] players’ helmets from flying off should be commended. Last year it was commonplace and I can’t recall it happening once this season. Hopefully Aaron Murray’s helmet doesn’t come off prior to a crucial 3rd or 4th and 12 and he has to come out of the game, [but if it does], who comes in, [Christian] LeMay or [Parker] Welch? Does using a timeout allow the player to remain in the game? By the way, I hate the rule. Perhaps one or two warnings per game before missing a play would be more fair.

The intent of the new rule, to prompt players to buckle up those helmets tighter so they don’t get a serious injury, is good. But in practice it’s become the most hated rule in college football. (I expect it will get tweaked for next season.) From what I’m told, you can’t use a timeout to cancel out the offending player having to sit out a play. I don’t know whether Georgia has just been lucky in that regard or has put greater emphasis on keeping helmet straps tightly snapped. If, however, Murray were to be in the situation Mizzou’s James Franklin found himself in and have to leave the field on a key down, you raise an interesting question about his replacement. It probably would depend on the play call. For a quarterback keeper, Bobo might want to go with LeMay. If a pass was necessary, Welch might be the better choice. And then there’s always the possibility of a direct snap to a running back or one of the Dawgs’ two-way players if it’s a short-yardage situation. Anyway, let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.

L writes: I’ve noticed a disturbing trend in our end zone student section before games. When opposing teams are warming up and practicing kicking field goals the ball sails into the stands. The managers and trainers ask for the ball back and most students just throw it back. Some get a little funny and purposefully toss the ball away from the manager. Yes, it’s funny to see them run all over the field. But recently I’ve witnessed students intentionally throwing the football at the opposing players. Not only is this dangerous and could cause an injury but at Georgia we are classier than that. I wanted to pass that along as something I don’t want to see in “my” Sanford Stadium, and I know you certainly don’t want to see that, either. Thanks Bill, keep up the good work.

This isn’t the first time I’ve heard complaints about obnoxious behavior in the end zone student section this season. I don’t know what’s up there; perhaps they’re just mad they have the worst sightlines in the stadium. You’re right, though, that throwing balls at opposing players is way out of line. From what I hear, there’s more security in the student sections than in other areas of the stadium, and I would hope if those folks see such behavior that they’d eject the offending fan.

Dean writes: Hi Bill, The Dawgs must be getting it together if the only thing that concerns me from Saturday night is how the fans behaved. During the Florida Atlantic game and continuing into parts of the Vandy game, large swaths of fans seemed to be wanting to sit down to watch the game. At the FAU game this didn’t bother me so much, but during the Vandy game I was a bit more concerned (it’s an SEC game, after all). Apparently it bothered some other folks as well … a group below me got pretty heated over the subject. I know there’s no “right” or “wrong” answer here, but all things considered, I’d think that folks should be prepared to either stand up or not hassle those who choose to do so. Considering that players are regularly motioning to the fans to get up, I just don’t understand how people could be so worried about sitting down. What’s your take on this? What would you do if/when fans near you start arguing over the subject?

While it’s the tradition at Georgia for the students to stand for the entire game (which isn’t always the case at other schools), fans in other sections generally sit when nothing important is going on and stand when it is, which sounds like a reasonable approach. If you like to stand, be mindful that there are folks behind you for whom that might be a problem. There are older fans in the stadium who can’t necessarily stand for the entire game, and children and shorter folks whose view is blocked by a large person constantly standing in front of them. Those who can’t or don’t want to stand are free to politely request folks in front of them to sit at least part of the time. If the folks standing refuse, probably the best bet is to simply stand up during the few seconds a play is running and then sit back down. If that’s too much physically, they probably should be home watching it on TV. As for fans arguing, if you’re not involved, it’s best to stay that way. But if it’s disrupting your enjoyment of the game, try to get the attention of one of the event personnel so they can intervene.

Christian Jolly writes: I have a question about the side of the field UGA stands on for home games. I notice this varies widely across all of college football … some teams take the opposite side of the field, and they are therefore directly across from the main bank of TV cameras, leading to more onscreen time and exposure. UGA has always — at least to my memory — taken the near side, which means that the visiting team at Sanford Stadium is onscreen during the game, across from the press box. Any reason for this that you’re aware of, and any considerations about the potential impact on recruiting for one side or the other? Thanks!

First of all, I doubt this has any impact on recruiting. And I don’t know that the coaches are looking for any more screen time. Have you noticed how they all tend to cover their mouths with a play sheet or something when they’re talking on the headset so that their lips can’t be read? Also, most networks covering games use multiple camera angles, so they’re not really limited to focusing on one side. Generally, they point their cameras where the story is. As for why Georgia’s home bench is on the south sideline, I’ve no idea, but that’s the way it’s always been as long as I can remember. Perhaps they chose that side in the early days because they played mostly in the afternoon and it had more shade.

So Bill for the last year you and everyone else has complained about the students either not coming to games or coming in late, but now they come in early and are loud and you complain that they’re TOO OBNOXIOUS? Wow, talk about a wine and cheese crowd. I doubt similar complaints are raised at LSU, Alabama, Florida or any other SEC school.

Dean – The players are motioning for the crowd to get loud. If you stand and don’t yell what have you done other than block someone elses view. I pay for a seat in the stadium. I yell loud sitting down. So I’m with the down in front crowd.

Sometimes the best defense is a good offense. Pound the rock and grind the clock, keep UT’s pass-happy O off the field and keep our defense rested and sharp. Sam Parker in Boone plays NCAA13 like a girl.

You don’t have the brains to argue with Tech fans or the football history to argue with Bama fans. Try to find some meaningless stat about how you beat the #110 ranked school in the country and we only beat Michigan (by the way look at your schedule, Michigan would be the best team on it). Almost all fans wear red to every game. It’s not a gimmick. It’s just something that we do (and we don’t have to be told to do so).

As for standing, when something exciting is happening on field, I stand up until the play ends, then sit down. It’s not a big deal. I’ve been to many, many high-school and some college football games. People always stand briefly for exciting stuff.

People who stand up for the entire game are just plain rude. Big plays, absolutely, stand up and scream. But I don’t pay $70 to look at a big behind or stand on my feet. And for the record, the players aren’t asking anyone to stand up when they bounce around flapping their arms. They are asking them to simply make noise. Good grief.

I took my wife who has a disability to a home game a few years ago. We sat in the disabled seats in the southeast section of the stadium. Turned out there were no seats for which the tickets had listed and the section itself had poor to no visibility unless you were in the front row. To the credit of the university the ticket manager heard our complaints and quickly found us better seats. The whole stadium is aligned towards the south side. The G is read from that side, the spell GEORGIA cheer is read from that side, and it’s the premium side for alumni ticketing (requiring more seniority and more lifetime giving). It’s been that way since way before college football teams expected to be on TV every week, and the afternoon shade is a good bet as to why it happened that way. I’d say the team standing in the shade instead of full sun for several hours on a September afternoon really is a home field advantage.

I am thinking that Bobo finally has smart running backs and can open the play book more. Some of the recent ones were not that sharp mentally.

Now you know what is wrong with LeMay. Bobo is finally treating these kids like they have enough intelligence to handle more complex offensive formations and to spread out the receiver. All that studying by Murray has paid off in that Bobo can mix up a lot of things on offense and Murray is able to direct the play with success. I give a lot of the credit to the fans for demanding more from a Coordinator than we were getting. I am glad Bobo has responded positively.
The bad thing that will come out of Bobo finally learning how to be an Offensive Coordinator and be successful is he will start getting interviews from other schools as Head Coach or to be a position coach at the Pro level.

Geez… some of you people would complain if someone handed you a million dollars. You’d say the bills were old or you wanted a particular year. Good teams have always had gimmicks. What else would you call the USC guy jabbing a sword into the turf? Or FSU’s ritual spear stab? Or the Sooner Schooner? Get a life. The Coach is making the REDOUT a call to arms. If that is all you can think about then you need some serious help. BTW… BLACK is one of the official school colors. A black uniform is still using school colors. Do you complain when the Falcons wear black? The team’s colors were chosen by Rankin Sr specifically because was a UGA grad. I thought the Pro Combat Uniforms were cheesy and I hope we don’t ever wear them again. BUT I understand why it was done.

I can answer that question “What has gotten into Mike Bobo”. It is an offensive line that has been improving, making far fewer mental breakdowns and opening holes for our running backs. This has allowed them to be able to run for big yardage on a consistent basis thus taking pressure off of the QB. It also has aided our shorthanded “D” to stay off the field and thus shows in our second half performance in all 4 games so far as we have gotten stronger as the games have gone on.

One of my biggest complaints has been this tendency over the last 7 years prior to this one was all of the missed assignments on the O-line, penalties and just being beaten at times. This group seems to be able to adjust to what the other teams are doing which shows in watching them manhandle the opposing teams defenses at times these first 4 games. It also shows in that Murray hasn’t been hit as often or rushed for that matter which has shown up in his increased accuracy. I hope they continue to improve and we really see how GOOD this team can become. By the way- I thought the SEC West was far superior to the East– well it seems it is turning back to the East huh.

BTW King Saban- I saw that game you keep referring to in 2008 between Bama and the Dawgs and in my humble opinion which is confirmed by the tape of the game— if the Officials had not been punishing the Dawgs for that much publicized celebration against the Gators in 2007. That game would have been a real struggle in the first half and I am not saying the Dawgs would not have lost anyways but it would have gone down to the wire. Anyways, a shorthanded team cause of all the injuries, I believe the Dawgs acquitted themselves nicely in the second half against Bama. Oh and BTW I believe Coach Richt’s record against Saban is 3 wins and 3 losses with 2 of those losses coming in 2003 the year LSU won a National Championship.

I think some of you like to comment just to read what you wrote…But it would be nice if you would read and comprehend the article first. It stated that a fan asked about having a red out. If you have ever been to a UGA game you would know that this is the norm. Knowing that this is the norm, Coach Richt went along with it. As far as the standing and sitting, I think it’s all about respecting those who are around you and we know that doesn’t always happen. But you do have kids, and shorter people at games that may not be able to see if someone is standing in front of them.

NCDawg

What has gotten into Bobo is running backs he can count on. CMR says there are fewer missed assignments along the line as well. EVERY play looks like genius when it is executed well. A simple blast play right up the gut with Carlton Thomas looks like genius when it is blocked well and goes for 30 yards but looks like insanity when somebody misses a block and he gets creamed at the line. The offense is executing both in the games and in practice so Bobo feels confident calling those plays in games. You can’t just call a play you never practiced and you don’t call plays that always get screwed up in practice. When it looks good in practice you call it in the game and evidently for the past few years there were fewer plays he had confidence in.
Take note Bobo detractors… sometimes the QB checked down into a different play and that play did not work so it isn’t always Bobo’s fault. Murray also has confidence in what he can check down to.

It surely helps that the offense has some running backs that are conscientious and dependable so then the o line knows and understands how to practice. It also helps the QB to know that he has dependable backs behind him, not just players on the field, but great individuals off the field. This helps the entire team.

We lost the blackout game that year because we wasn’t the better team that day. That was 4 years ago. Tradition is for people set in their ways and afraid of change. When the NBA fans wear the same exact T-shirts for big games, it just creates a better atmosphere. Its not a gimmick. A gimmick would be to try onside kicks and trick plays all day. We don’t need to do what this school or that school does. I’d be willing to bet the players love it. Richt loves it. Recruits are gonna love it. So we need to just shut up and love it too. Talk about classless. At least we give the ball back to the team. If you go to the game next week, check it out. I think everything is way better in Sanford.

As for why Georgia’s home bench is on the south sideline: For day games late in the season, take a look at which team is standing in the sun for all 4 quarters and which team is in the shade by the middle of the third quarter.

The Dogs take the South side of the stadium so they will have the shade and the visiting team will have to endure the heat.

It is called home field advantage and Georgia coaches have utilized it since Sanford Stadium was double decked in 1966. Georgia did not start playing night games at home until 1983. Clemson was the first. UCLA in 1984 was the second.

Holy crap, people are still talking about Jan Kemp.

The students now weren’t even alive when that happened. THAT WAS FOUR COACHES AGO.

Good Lord, get a life.

also for those of you that don’t like the Red Outs or Black Outs or Combat jerseys….

The players and recruits LOVE them. It doesn’t make them play better or worse BUT it does help recruit guys like Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley.

Shut up and support your university

For the fans that want to sit down during a game, they need to also be respectful of the fans that want to cheer as loud and show support of our players who are giving everything they have for the Red and Black on game day. I believe that the Georgia fan base can calm their heels, rest up and for goodness sake have some dipping dots to cool themselves when the offense is on the field trying to operate, it should be quiet to allow our team to audible and such. But when our Defense hits the field we should stand, scream and yell to fire up our team, mess with the other teams cadence and audibles and show some Home Field Advantage at Sanford Stadium. So please Georgia fans show UT’s offense and each visiting team going forward that visit Sanford Stadium that it is going to be hard if not impossible to check down at the line or call an audible on offense because the UGA fans are so loud. These players are giving us everything they got with their blood sweat and tears, so can we not stand and give them some home field advantage and fire up our Defense! Commit to the G and help be that 12th man on defense UGA Fans!

Red Out? Who do they play? Oh, the Vols…South Carolina is next week. This will be a very interesting game. At the beginning of the season, I guestimated that UGA would lose 3 games. This could be one of them (at home too).

When will apostle Richt stop worrying about what the fans wear, or what uniform/helmet magic he’s going to conjure and just winning games? Have we not been embarrassed enough by the last few uniform tricks?

Go DAWGS! GATA and just win big, damn it!

Apostle? I thought he was a saint. Has Richt been demoted?

Richt ain't all he appears to be

During the 1986 Jan Kemp trial, Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for UGA, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a typical UGA player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”

That trial exposed UGA for the football factory that it was, and exposed slimy Vince Dooley as a fraud and a sleazebag. It also derailed Dooley’s plans for a political career in the U.S. Congress. That’s why we see the decrepit old fraud doing TV commercials even now.

Mark Richt is just the latest in a line of sleazy UGA coaches who coddle athletes and discard them after four years of football. He recruits illiterate morons he knows aren’t smart enough for college, but he doesn’t care, as long as they help him line his pockets with millions of dollars each year. But to Richt’s credit, he does produce a lot of fine garbagemen. And homeless bums.

Saint Mark isn’t quite all he appears to be, is he?

“Apostle? I thought he was a saint. Has Richt been demoted?”
********************************************************************************

Actually, it;s the opposite; Saint was a term applied from the earliest days of Christianity to all believers, but Apostle was a title used to identify only those who had actually personally known and received instruction directly from Christ.

Lakedawg,
I guess you missed the greatest defensive postseason National Championship Game in 1980. Vince Dooley won it. Richt has yet to win it with our Dawgs. In fact, he hasn’t even come close to it.

I think DD is an up and coming HC and given time with a program that was utterly destroyed by another coach (in my opinion) he’ll have UT an SEC contender again.
I don’t know how you think anyone can take a shredded college program and turn it into an SEC winner in two years. Read a book.

Hey, Richt ain’t all he appears@1135pm(and many other aliases)…you need professional help, man! I’m no psychiatrist, but your hateful attitude, jumbling of the facts, apparent racism and near constant presence on the AJC blogs are worrisome. To borrow one of your phrases, you are turning these college football blogs into a “cesspool.” Seriously, seek professional help for your obsession with UGA. Once you get well, why don’t you volunteer to help some kids from underprivileged backgrounds and join Richt and many others as part of the solution.

Richt needs to worry about preparing his team for a big home game. This clown and his coaching staff have failed to prepare the team or prepare a decent game plan for a big home game in several years. This head coach shouldn’t ask the UGA fans to do anything, he should be thankful they still show up and support the pitiful product he and his coaching staff have put on the field the last 4 or 5 years. Win a big game Richt, and then ask the fans to wear whatever you like, but until you do that, keep your big mouth shut and coach.

1971Dawg – as stated a dozen times in previous posts…. it was FAN calling in that ASKED for the REDOUT. CMR, rather than dousing fan enthusiasm, added his endorsement. You can call yourself a fan but you aren’t. A real fan stands by their team through thick and thin, win or lose. A real fan can privately think what he wants but in the public forum he stands tall for his team. Part of a Head Coach’s job is promoting the team and a Sanford Stadium full of 100% red clad Bulldog fans on national TV is quite a promotion. The announcers will take note of it and viewers, not just Dawg fans, will see the passion and excitement in the Bulldog Nation. For every one of you whiners there are 100 or a thousand true Dawg fans that think it is a great idea. I don’t know who whizzed in ya’lls cheerios but big boys get over it.

Maybe you should think about pulling for a team you can get behind. You are,as bad a fan as you “claim” Mark Richt is a Coach. Your allegiance is dubious at best, treasonous at worst. As a long-time life-long fan myself, I see you as just another malcontent jerk , walking the tight-rope of trolldom and whinerism, lol. You can’t get behind a 4-0 team ranked #5 in the country, then I have to assume, you are no fan at all…
