Dawgs put series with Vandy back in its place

It was another big night for Georgia freshman Todd Gurley. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

It was another big night for Georgia freshman Todd Gurley. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

48-3.

Yes, this was your father’s Georgia-Vanderbilt series.

You know all that talk the past year about the newly competitive “rivalry” between the Bulldogs and the Commodores?

Never mind.

Mark Richt’s team came roaring out of the gate Saturday night at Sanford Stadium on both offense and defense (that’s right, no slow start for the Georgia D this time around) and, frankly, the game was in hand with a score of 27-3 at halftime.

The Dawgs’ terrific freshman tailback duo of Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall had another fine night, with Gurley rushing for 130 yards on 16 carries and Marshall adding 82 yards on his 10 carries.  Ken “Boo” Malcome added 41 yards on six carries. Richard Samuel finally got to play a bit of tailback, ending up with 27 yards on five carries, including one nice run.

Gurley and Marshall both ran tough, with Gurley breaking four tackles on a 29-yard touchdown run. And Marshall showed impressive speed on his 52-yard scoring burst.

As for Aaron Murray, he was on fire, completing his first dozen passes on a night when he completed 18 of 24 for 250 yards and two touchdowns, with no interceptions. And he only played three quarters, with the Dawgs taking their foot off the pedal in the fourth, with Parker Welch and then Christian LeMay coming in.

The Dawgs wound up the evening with 567 total yards on offense despite pulling back in the fourth. Georgia again had a receiver top 100 yards, with Marlon Brown catching five passes for 114 yards and a touchdown.

With Jarvis Jones back and having seven tackles, including a sack and three tackles for loss, Todd Grantham’s defense looked sharp most of the night.

Minor quibble: The D had a shutout going with a couple of minutes left in the first half when a few players appeared to have mentally gone to the locker room a bit early and the Dores quick-passed their way down the field. It only ended up costing the Bulldogs 3 points, however, and most of the second half was also lights-out defense.

Vandy did move the ball a bit in the fourth quarter, getting down to Georgia’s 3 before QB Jordan Rodgers (who started despite being benched last week) reached for the end zone and wound up fumbling for a touchback (after the original TD ruling was overturned on review). It’s always great seeing an opponent’s points taken off the scoreboard!

So Georgia scored 40 points for a fourth consecutive game for the first time in its history and managed to match its largest ever winning margin over the Commodores, taking its 17th victory over Vandy in the past 18 games.

Business as usual, in other words.

Feel free to share your own thoughts on Georgia’s convincing win over Vandy.

Getting back two tremendous defensive players next week…chance to move Mitchell back to the receiver position. This is the type of Georgia team we haven’t seen in many years. This is the type of Georgia team that could win a national championship. For now though…let’s go out and beat Tennessee.

Is it just me, or did we have more rushes outside of the tackle-box in the last 2 games than we did in the last season? (Seriously. I’d like to know.) Huummm … I wonder if that has anything to do with the rushing stats getting better? Do you think that might actually have some kind of affect on the time of possession? I wonder if holding the ball and limiting the number of plays the other team’s O gets helps the D’s stats? So now, for the second week in a row, I don’t want to stick my foot up Mike Bobo’s ***. Gee, I wonder why.

The athletic history of UGA is full of so many sordid, sleazy incidents – dating back to Vince Dooley and continuing through Mark Richt – that it’s impossible to overlook. The school has come to stand for drunkenness and lawlessness, coddling of illiterate low-class athletes who should never have been admitted to college, and rampant cheating by coaches.

UGA and Mark Richt are an affront and an embarrassment to all decent people in this state.

Great game for the Dawgs. Why not another score to show real dominance like Saban
SPURRIER and Miles. Sometimes CMR is too nice. May cost us later. Don’t like lapses in intensity. We need to dominate with our easy schedule. High scoring teams appear more powerful. Would hate to go undefeated and miss the NC. Pile it on. Stomp the opponents. Move up in the polls.

Man there are a lot of weapons running around on that field in red…. Gurley is an absolute beast!!! Better in pretty much every way, except experience, than Lattimore. Catches better, better vision, equal power, but way faster. Wear ‘em down with Gurley, slice ‘em up with Marshall.

To UGA Marketing- can we get an all red t-shirt with “TG3″ on the front, with “Run Like A Gurley” on the back?????

Settle down, dawg4life. Love the T-shirt idea, but lets not give TG the nod over a two-time All-American after 4 games. But if we still feel that way on October 7 then by all means. :)

The D still had some lapses at times. We need to always be dominant and should have pitched a shut out. The offense didnt score in the 4th qtr either which was disappointing. Should have put up at least 56 on these guys. Once again Richt let up and didnt score more style points.

Finally a game the Dawgs came out from the onset and was ready to play. Its said alot about our coaching staff if they can find a way to get this team ready we can beat anybody!!! It was also nice to see Bobo keep his foot on the pedal. We have more talent at the skill positions than Bama or Lsu but we have to build depth on the lines because that is where Bama and Lsu have a advantage!!! The special teams still need more work there was a couple of kick offs returns against us that was a little to long. Punt return that we should have not been caught inside the 10 and a missed PAT and another that hit the upright but bounced in. But over all a good game that shows what we are capable of when we continue to keep our foot on the gas!!! GTA!!! Go Dawgs!!!

South Carolina has a better defense and the dawgs need a lot of work on special teams too. I think the dawgs will lose a regular season because of poor special teams play. Dawgs will still get killed by a Bama.

Wow…

Solid Game. UT woke up in the second half and took care of business. They are much improved. While you would never call UT a ‘trap game’, Georgia cannot get caught looking forward to playing South Carolina.

All you have to do is look at the ‘Troll Count’ and the ‘Content’ to know that Georgia won big and Tech got upset. Juvenile post with no hint of North Avenue. Ignore it and enjoy the win and how the season is going.

UGA's back up QB race

September 23rd, 2012

Parker Welsh played HS QB in Jesup,Ga. That is big boy ball. He throws a nice ball and probaly knows the O playbook and is a leader.

The LeMay kid is a project QB. No way that he is a legit # 2 and there must be a deal with mommy and daddy to keep putting him on the field to play.

I feel badly for Huston Mason, who could start for other SEC teams. LeMay is a long work in progress and I sure hope that we do not have to rely on him. He seems confused or dazed and lost. He can neither run or throw the ball. He will not help UGA for at least another year or two.

Go Dogs.

hopeman and visions of Willie …

“…Richt too nice…need to dominate…Richt let up…”

Lawdamercy, we were up 48-3. That’s pretty dominating if ya ask me. Your school of thought would not allow other players to get some experience, which adds depth. Gotta have depth to compete against good teams. Style points? I guess Spurrier would agree.

Yep, improvement needed on D…too many big plays by Vandy; kinda bend but don’t break. And special teams need work; but overall did fairly well.

Lemay is #2 because Mason is redshirting. The coaches see his play during the week; must be pretty good during practices. He can’t improve unless he gets playing time. It’s best to have a backup QB with at least some experience. We’ll see as the season progresses whether Welch and Lemay separate themselves. They got in with 11 (13?) minutes to go and both got to throw a couple passes, which would never happen if it was 3 mins to go and just mop up duty. I have to agree, however, that Lemay hasn’t looked good. But neither has Murray in his first series or two the first three games.

Great win over Vandy!

All I can say Bill is: “Wow!” I know it was “only Vandy.” But this Vandy came oh so close to beating us last year and USCe this year. I don’t know how good Vandy is, but I’m pretty sure they are not pitiful, although the Dawgs made them look just that last night. If there is a negative to all this, I guess it’s that we can be very good or very ordinary depending on the attitude the team happens to have on the day in question. I mean it is hard to believe that is the same team we saw the first 3 weeks of the season. It’s been like night and day. Hopefully we’ll see more attitude like we saw last night in the weeks to come. We’ll need exactly that to win games against better competition.

Gurley and Marshall are both awesome. And I haven’t seen either of them get tired and wave to the sideline to come out of the game (Isaiah).
Receiver corps is as deep as we have ever had.
Murray does a great job reading the blitz and getting rid of the ball quickly.
D bends but doesn’t break.

This year will be SPECIAL!!!

Your 7:43 post doesn’t make any sense on a sports blog. Nobody really cares about your opinion if it doesn’t relate to the football game. You may get sympathy and pity but your mental problems need to be evaluated by a professional not a bunch of football fanatics.

Georgia has a problem that needs to be addressed before we get to a defense like South Carolina and Florida who will take advantage. Our Freshmen kickers are great and will get better but they are making too many mistakes. Morgan is not a sure thing on extra points. I don’t know if it is the holder or what but we had another extra point missed yesterday and Morgan hit the goal post again. As for Barber Vanderbilt came very close to blocking 2 or 3 of his kicks. He needs to pick it up kicking the ball before he really gets a rush .
I don’t know which coach is responsible for our kickers but they need to stop taking them for granted and give them some needed supervision and guidance before it hurt us.
