Do Mark Richt and Mike Bobo play not to lose? (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
I’ll be off next week and away from the Blawg as we get my daughter settled in Athens — which is sure to get me even more primed for football season to begin!
In the meantime, let’s jump into some of this week’s Junkyard Mail. …
David Youngerman writes: Bill, I enjoy your blog and the attempts to stay grounded as a fellow diehard fan. With all the chatter around Top 5 question marks going into the season, I’m in agreement the OL, RB’s, and special teams are potential watch-outs (even though special teams is the only one that scares me). That said, my biggest concern going into the season isn’t one of those three topics and I’m worried my concern doesn’t get discussed more often. Recent years have shown a pattern (particularly from the offense) of not having the ability to close out a team when we have them down. I honestly believe this reflects Coach Richt and Bobo’s personalities as we repeatedly “play not to lose” once we get a nice lead (see Michigan State, Vandy, Miss. St. last year). Seems to me we used to close out games with sustained, time-killing drives and end up in the “victory” formation at the end more often before Bobo started calling the plays. We just seem to have a soft mindset towards really closing a team out.
The lack of a killer instinct has been a common complaint, really, throughout the Mark Richt era, not just since Mike Bobo started calling the offensive plays. (Although, once again, I have to say that Bobo’s maddening tendency in games to go away from whatever has been working offensively drives me up the wall.) But I don’t think it’s just a matter of the coaches trying to play it safe in their play calling (though that certainly appeared to be the case in the bowl game against Michigan State) or generally not keeping the pressure on offensively when they’re ahead (which we’ve also seen quite a few times). More than that, conditioning was a problem for the Dogs late in quite a few games in recent years, and although last season showed some improvement in that regard, the bowl game against the Spartans was an example where our defense looked gassed in the fourth quarter. Hopefully, the continued changes in the strength and conditioning program will help turn that around.
As for your reference to areas of concern, I tend to agree with you that special teams is the scariest, especially since Richt hasn’t taken any really concrete steps to revamp that portion of the game, aside from saying they’ll practice it more and more starters will play kick coverage. Like many fans, I wish he would name a special teams coach to focus more directly on that area, though I understand that NCAA coaching limitations complicate that.

Nick Saban supplements his coaching staff with "analysts." (Associated Press)
There apparently are ways to get around those limitations, however, as Nick Saban is showing at Alabama. Al.com recently reported Saban’s staff now includes nine “analysts,” up from six last season and three the year before that. Five of the “analysts” work with the offense, three “analysts” work with the defense, and John Wozniak, most recently the running backs coach and co-special teams coordinator at UAB, is Alabama’s new special teams “analyst.” If he can’t free up a coaching position to handle special teams, maybe Richt needs to follow the Saban model and add a special teams “analyst” to his staff.
Andy M. Johnson writes: As a Dawg Fan, I worry about our recent years of “slow starts” and wonder what coaching strategy has been implemented to rectify this ongoing issue…
I don’t know what changes might have been instituted, but I just hope the Georgia coaching staff avoids doing whatever they did in getting the team ready for last year’s season-opener against Boise State! That was as poorly prepared a Georgia team as I’ve seen in a while, which made the improvement (at least, in terms of the offense) from that game to the game against South Carolina all the more remarkable.
Along those lines, Steve Upshaw writes: I have absolutely no confidence that Mark Richt will have the Dogs prepared when they go to Columbia, MO. We already have our tickets, as we do for most road games with the Dogs. For 30 years, we’ve traveled with and supported the team, but this organization is on a very long, slow and steady slide. The facts clearly bear this out. I remember standing in the stands at the Superdome the night we beat Hawaii and quietly thinking how lucky and blessed we are to have Richt as our head coach. I have stood by, supported and defended Richt as long as I can. So I’ll state this before even the first game of the season: It is absolutely time for a change in Athens. Of course, we could be satisfied with our 10-win seasons and a Jan 1st bowl game, but that’s all we’ll accomplish with the current regime. I’m in the high-end medical hardware business. My travels take me to every corner of the nation. Outside the SEC region, UGA is never mentioned as a power team and one to be feared, as are Alabama, LSU and even Florida. We have become Tennessee. Like Alabama a few years back, it looks like we will spend the next few years lost in the wilderness looking for a way out.
I’m glad to hear your pessimism hasn’t prompted you to give up supporting the program, even if you’ve given up on Richt. That kind of school loyalty is what makes the Bulldog Nation a great fan base. I haven’t yet given up on Richt, but I know you’re not alone in your view. As for what folks in other regions think, that’s pretty much a function of who’s taken home the crystal football. That’s the millstone hanging around Richt’s neck.

Aaron Murray might surprise some Georgia fans this season. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
Glenn Goldstein writes: Bill, It’s fairly easy to point out Georgia’s expected strengths — defense, QB, receivers — and potential weaknesses and questions—OL, tailback, special teams — going into the season, but where do you think the unexpected surprises will come from?
On the positive side, I think the receiving corps might surprise a lot of folks this season, and I believe Aaron Murray may surprise the many naysayers about him in fan forums. Daniel Jeremiah, who covered this summer’s Manning Passing Academy for NFL.com, was impressed by Murray and said he was surprised at how powerfully Murray threw the deep ball. “Murray had as much range as any quarterback at the camp,” he said.
On the negative side, I’m tempted to say we’ll probably have some suspensions crop up during the season, but I’m not sure that would really qualify as a surprise any more.
Bill C. writes: I think Richt is doing a really good job coaching UGA in a highly competitive league. Why can we not get over the hump though? I can think of lots of reasons: inconsistent at best special teams, really bad luck (i.e. losing Shockley before UF), we play in the toughest league ever, etc. But those aren’t the reasons why we haven’t won it all. We haven’t won it all because, unlike his peers, Richt does not value winning above all else. Urban Meyer almost killed himself winning his championships, Nick Saban would kill anyone within 200 miles of Tuscaloosa if he thought they might negatively affect his team, Gene Chizik and Auburn bought their championship, Les Miles isn’t smart enough to care about anything but winning, and it’s no mystery how Steve Spurrier feels about winning. Richt runs an ethical and clean program. I respect where winning ranks in Richt’s overall values: I am guessing 4th, behind his religion, family, and the overall well-being of his players. However, if we’re going to win it all, that value ranking has to change. Winning needs to move to number 2 behind player health for 3 1/2 hours 14 times a year. I’m not talking about partying in the end zone, I’m talking about players never letting up or losing to someone who wants it more. I hope Richt finds that killer instinct somewhere inside of him and finally brings a team above and beyond its potential. Thoughts?
I’m not sure I agree that you have to be ruthless and obsessed to win a national championship, though I’m sure it might simplify the process. A bit of fire in the belly certainly doesn’t preclude having high standards and sticking to them. And despite his laid-back demeanor, I think Richt is probably every bit as competitive inside as the coaches you named. What will it take for Georgia to win a national title? A Heisman-winning player usually helps a lot in that regard. Plus a dominating defense. I don’t know whether Georgia has that kind of game-changing player on the roster right now, but I think the Dawgs are on the right track defensively. A bit of luck usually comes in handy, too. Maybe that’s why so many Georgia fans get so frustrated with Richt: the program isn’t that far away from rejoining the elite.

The lack of killer instinct is the biggest problem. No doubt.

I agree about the killer instinct, but I believe it’s not just the offense but also the defense. With Vangorder richt would become ultra conservative with a lead also, but the defense would just continue to shutdown the other team. I have heard that Grantham doesn’t sub much, maybe that is why the conditioning looks so bad sometimes. I’m still not that satisfied with the tackling of the defense, there are still times that they never bring their hands with them when they tackle. As for the offense, they do need to do a better job of sticking with what is working. I remember many games where the passing game was working so well, but bobo would call a running play every first down and they would get stuffed every time.
As for special teams, I really want Richt to take control of special teams. If he names himself the special teams coach, I think we will see more emphasis on this from the players. Personally I’m not a big fan of having a bunch of starters on special teams. The potential for injury and just getting the players more winded out weigh the benefits. All of these backups on scholarship are supposed to be top recruits also, they should be able to atleast do special teams.

UGA mandates that the penalty for athletes who are caught using illegal drugs is to be suspended for a minimum of 10% of the games for their sport. The regular season for football is 12 games. 10% of 12 games equals 1.2 games. When Richt suspends a player for one game, that’s only 8.3%, not 10%. Assuming that UGA plays in a post-season bowl game, it’s only 7.7%.
So how does Marvelous Marky explain that away?
I know it’s UGA, where mathematical skills are limited, but even Richt, who’s not very bright, should be able to handle a calculator.
Never mind, I forgot that Richt is a lowlife, cheating sleazebag. That explains everything.

They both have no killer instinct. It is proven in every game. When you have a team down, you have to go for the kill. When you play passive it hurts your team and makes them lazy. MDawg, if Bobo is hired away, I just hope CMR has enough sense to hire a competent OC as well as a great recruiter. The offense is very lethargic, it will bore you to death. GT offense brings more excitment than UGA and UGA has way more talent. Trust me, he can be replaced easily.

I don’t know if it’s a lack of killer instinct, but I do know that based on the quantity and quality of high school talent in this State, Uga, during Richt’s tenure, should have at least one National Title. Richt’s annual failure to evaluate and sign physical, athletic offensive lineman not only results in limiting what he and Bobo can do offensively, but Richt also ends up mindlessly feeding the very teams he needs to beat with these studs. Bill, you and UGA fans only need to watch the South Carolina tape to see an example of this. No. 73 for Carolina is Creekside High’s Rokevious Watkins. Talk about a dominant performance! On Marcus Lattimore’s game clinching touchdown, Watkins pulled and literally buried Christian Robinson. Why wasn’t he doing this for UGA? Hell, the kid’s from right here in Atlanta. By Richt failing to sign the kid, he mindlessly equips Spurrier with just the type of physical offensive lineman he needs to beat you! He did the same thing with James Carpenter and Chance Warmack, two Georgians that made up the right side of our NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP offensive line. Richt is at it yet again. Standing idly by while Tech lands Tri City teammates OT Shamire Devine and OG Jeremi Hall. Muschamp needs to send Richt a gator hat in appreciation of OG Joshua Outlaw, OT Max Garcia, and most recently OG and STUD Octavious Jackson. Hell, at least try to sign these athletes to “starve” your competiton! But he won’t do it! Year after year the same damn thing! It’s infuriating and makes you wonder what Richt is thinking. You’re never going to get there with him. Never.

Actually Carpenter, from Hepzibah and Warmack, from Cam Newton’s school, Westlake, made up the left side of our National Championship line. Carpenter went on to become a 1st round draft pick of the Seattle Seahawks and Warmack is a 4-year starter for us and has starred on two National Championship teams. He’ll be a high round draft pick as well. Thanks Richt. What does it take for this guy to figure it out! What’s it been. 32 years. This is the reason why. Make the connection you dummy. Damn.

CMR….time to put up or pack up…..enough talent in State and surrounding states to field a Team that can beat Top 20 Teams….this losing to those Teams every year needs to stop….CMR, you need to win @ least 11 games this year to show some evidence of getting UGA back on the National map!!! C’mon Man….your staff needs to make this happen….no more Willie Martinez tenures for this present staff (they need to do their job w/ excellence or pack up!!!)

Must like field goals in the red zone, right? Is Richt a piece of work or what? Got the “wrap around shades”, tinted hair, spray on tan, and not a clue. He and Bobo should have been replaced after the Cental Florida beat down. Y’all remember. That’s the game where your team QUIT.

Everybody see that photo at the top? That’s why it’s silly to blame Bobo for anything to do with the offense – game planning, play-calling, or in game adjustments (or lack of). Richt keeps the headset on, and UGA runs HIS offense.

FSU finished in the top 10 14 seasons, then UGA has finished in the top 10 6 times at UGA, so Coach Richt’s team have finished in the top 10, 20 out of the last 25 seasons. Only 1 losing season, finished in the top 25, 23 times out of 25 seasons.

Richt’s blind loyalty is what has kept UGA from winning a N.C. His loyalty to Martinez kept the defense and program down for over 5 years. UGA could have won it all in 2005&2007, but the defense was terrible. Then his loyalty to promote Bobo and keep him in charge of the offense has prevented UGA from winning big the past 5 years, and it will keep UGA from winning the SECC this year as well. And his loyalty to Garner is killing UGA in recruiting the past several years, and it is killing UGA in state again this year. Garner is losing the battle for defensive lineman in state, and he has been getting out recruited by the staffs at Auburn, Bama, Florida, and hell now even S.C. And last but certainly not least, Richt’s loyalty to Murray cost UGA 2 games last year, S.C and Mich.St. Murray’s boneheaded decisions continue to loss momentum the team works so hard to gain. Yet Richt refuses to play a backup, and sit Murray’s ass down when he continues to make the same mistakes over and over again. Nothing is going to change at UGA as long as Richt is in charge. There is an old saying “You can’t take strips off of a zebra” unfortunately for us UGA fans, we are stuck with this Zebra.

When you’re winning more and finishing in the top 10 2-6x more than Bear Bryant and Nick Saban did in their first 11 years, 6 top 10 finishes in 11 years, you don’t make assistant coaching changes. Coaching continuity is what allowed Richt to finish in the top 25 9 of 11 seasons at UGA.
Aaron Murray improved the wins from 6 in 2010, to 10 in 2011, that’s a 70% increase in win totals in 1 season, beat 2 top 25 ranked ranked teams along the way in GT & Auburn, and did it in a hotseat season with a lot of pressure also beat Florida.

I never once blame M.Bobo or no one else for the dawg’s problems except the hc. Aaron Murray would be a better qb had Mr Richt held him accountible for not protecting the football. With all 9 starters returning on defense and with all the weapons returning on offense we will see if Mr Richt is a pretender or a contender. This is a 12-0 team without a doubt.

Are you guys reading the latest on your new center David Andrews? He’s like 6′1″ 280. Bobo and Friend tease him about being short.
The kid acknowledges being short AND out weighed by up to 90 lbs by defensive linemen. Richt acknowledges all of this together with the challenge the kid faces coming out of a small private school program where he was easily the biggest on the field! Then Richt goes on to say that none of thes really matters because the kid is “Smart” and has good “Technique” RICHT IS CERTIFIABLY NUTS.This is exactly why you’ll never get there with the guy. He and Bobo base their opinions on the way they want things to be , not the way they really are. It’s crazy. They’re able to recognize the freakish nature of guys like John Jenkins and Jarvis Jones, and then choose to counter that with a private school kid outweighed by 80 lbs. You’re never going to get there with this two headed idiot aka RICHT/BOOBOO. Throw in a little Will Friend and Joe T. and off you go! 32 years. No wonder!

My problem is not necessarily that we haven’t won a NC (although that would help tremendously), it is that I haven’t seen good football played by the Dawgs in the past 4-5 years. I support the team- but I have concluded that it is the guy at the top who is holding them back.
One thing that looks apparent is that Richt is obsessively loyal – do you think Saban, Miles, Meyer, or Spurrier would keep Murray in the game after throwing a pick-six? Or keep Walsh kicking after it is apparent he has lost his Mojo? Or keep Bobo (or Martinez) around when they are so predictable? Richt seems to value loyalty above winning – maybe that is why the gold ring has eluded him.

Nice historical revisionism, BC.
Allowing Willie Martinez to stay at DC for 5 or 6 seasons when he obviously had no answer for stopping SEC teams or even PJ’s running attack, cost Richt at least one, maybe two shots at the Big Game, when he had about a dozen future NFL players – some even NFL stars – in ‘07 and ‘08.
Or course, you and others just go on and enjoy those “Top 25″ rankings, and magical 10-Win Seasons! At the end of every season, y’all get amnesia about the embarrassing losses during the year . . .

Jame Franklin is gonna be in our house, but listening to some folks, we don’t even need to show up, we’ve already lost, lol. And that brings me to S.C….How did this happen? We now have already accepted this as a yearly loss, really? What happened to our fans confidence???Try watching a 290 lb. D.E. lumber half way across the field on a fake punt. Try watching your team play a good team hard for a couple of quarters and then seemingly give up, give out, quit on their coach. Has Coach Richt fixed these problems? How do you teach a really good qb how to play on the edge but not turn the ball over, not to cough it up. 4 losses last year. Special Teams, turn-overs, no adjustments to our opponents (adjustments). Our Defense on the field the entire second-half, winded, gassed and wondering what just happened? Has CMR fixed our Special Teams? Don’t know…Has A. Murrary learned to throw the ball out of bounds yet? Will he hang on the ball better this year? Has CMR fixed the turn-over problem yet? Don’t know…Questions…Do we win the games we’re supposed to win? Lil Stevie really got CMRs #??? Where do we go this year? Which UGA team will show up. Where is our consistency Coach Richt? I think that’s what we’re looking for. Consistency. Win the games we’re supposed to win and turn the tables on lil stevie. Fix-it Coach Richt. THAT IS YOUR JOB!!! No National title in over 31 years. With the talent available to you in this state! You gotta be kiddin’ me! Come on damn it. There’s not another fan base in America that would put up with this crap. But y’all do. So I’m thinking, YOU’RE GETTING JUST WHAT YOU DESERVE KOOL-AIDERS. ROLL DAMN TIDE!!!!!
