Where do the Dawgs belong in the preseason rankings? (Updated)

oval G logoThe players are back in Athens, students are preparing to move into the dorms next week, and the AP and coaches’ preseason rankings are just around the corner.

In the meantime, a couple of fresh rankings are out: CBSsports.com is sticking to what most have predicted by having UGA in its Top 10, ranked No. 6. However, the Sporting News differs a bit, putting Georgia at No. 14, noting that while there’s “a lot to like about the Bulldogs,” Mark Richt’s program still needs to “put it together for a whole season … easier said than done in the SEC,” and establish “some consistency at the tailback position.”

Update: The USA Today coaches’ poll came out Thursday, with Georgia ranked No. 6.

So, what do you think? Richt’s program returns a loaded defense and an experienced quarterback and receivers and generally is favored to win the SEC East again, but is rebuilding its offensive line, continues with the backfield turmoil and still has that early-season suspension question to answer.

We’ve discussed this before, but let’s take a fresh look in the wake of the summer’s events. Are the Bulldogs a legitimate Top 10 team, or is the Sporting News closer to the mark?

To say there are only 4 team in the country that have more “talent” than Georgia right now, is how you always put it……….delusional. And voters have no agenda at this point, if they thought we had a terrible coaching staff, they wouldn’t be putting Georgia in or near the top 10.

No need to keep repeating it over and over. You don’t like Richt. And thats all you know or care about. Topic = Richt, plus some trite filler. We got it. Great debate. But the rest of us enjoy talking about the other 2 dozen things, if you don’t mind.

gtbob…..you forget to add michigan, ohio st., and texas to every preseason list, every year, no matter how bad they are

Oh yeah. Texas especially. They pretty much just take the same 25 teams every year and put them in some random order. By the end of the season everyone laughs because they weren’t even close.

Preseason ranking are not meant to be a prediction of how it will finish at the end of the season. Obviously there are fluid variables that affect that. They are ranking at that point in time, (thus the name pre-season) so obviously the stronger team will continue to show up. And its hardly random. Maybe in your circles they laugh at that, out of ignorance.

Preseason ranking are not meant to be a prediction of how it will finish at the end of the season.

Then why does UGA get such a huge boost because of their weak schedule? They are expected to beat all of those terrible teams so they are ranked higher than they should be.

At this point in the season with OL status being unknown I dont see how any knowledgable writer or poll could pick UGA in the top 10, so I thinks 14 would be closer to right.

I think the polls and writers are setting us up for a dissapointing season. That said, anything could happen.

IF
1) we get by Missouri
2) have our Oline jell in those first three games
3) get our D back to full strength
4) Get that momentum going early but at the same time STAY HUNGRY …All about attitude at that point going into SC. ….

……We will go into the SC game with a chance to prove that we are a top 6-8 team.

NOW… I dont see how anyone could pick us this high BUT…. Id rather be over ranked than under ranked as long as it does not go to our kids heads like it has gone to some of our fans!!!

After being paid around $25 million, Richt/UGA will continue to fall behind pitiful South Carolina. I suspect we will finish around 15, 5th in SEC. Bobo will blame inexperience on O line, Murray will go pro, and Richt had his disciples will preach patience next yr. with a new QB. Ground Hog Day. Give Richt a raise!! Bless you all

GT BOOB – That is a very legitimate problem …. with the press and voters, not with UGA. You have not heard any UGA official or players say that UGA is a top 10 team. The coaches poll is confidential but I bet CMR did not put UGA at 6 on his vote??/

With the powder-puff schedule that UGA has – there should be NO REASON or EXCUSES why UGA can’t finish at least 10-2 and win the SEC-East. WHO DO THEY PLAY?? Not Alabama (skipped out on that one), or LSU, or Arkansas. And Non-Conference?? WOW – what national powerhouses UGA plays – powerhouses like Buffalo, Florida-Atlantic (you mean that have a men’s football team??), Georgia-Southern, and GT – wow, what an easy schedule. Oh yea, I forgot, they play in the SEC so they MUST have a very tough conference schedule: Let’s see – Vandy (easy win), Tenn (not the UT of Fulmer days), SC (maybe the only TRUE opponent UGA will play this seaon), KY Jellies (annual slug fest??), FL (no, not the UF of years past, another easy win), Ole Missy (enough said), and Auburn (wounded eagles).
So – even a mediocre UGA team should be nothing less than 10-2 with THIS schedule.

There is a soft schedule in the SEC, UGA’s, really? Tell me Nostredumass how it compares to Tech’s?

We must get real about UGA

August 2nd, 2012
5:16 pm

In the SEC you win big with stellar line play on both sides of the ball and with depth. UGa will not have the latter and we will have to play the first team O line all game long and that is why we wear out. We are physically beat at half time. See LSU, see MSU and such.

Until CMR hires a staff that can attract big time O line players with more than one kid like Theus is, we will continue to struggle into the top 12 teams in USA> CMR will not win big ever with 5, 6 or 8 ONLY O line kids.

Go Dogs.

14 would be a good starting point. OL has been the weakest area on the team for the past couple of years. Not much of a running game the result. Opposing teams with good run defenses can focus on shutting down the pass. Until the OL proves it can run and pass block the Dawgs should be ranked in the second tier.

preseason polls do have one advantage when you are ranked higher…if you lose you don’t fall as far…if you win you climb faster

UGA has such an easy schedule they should win at least 9 games . Should be not ranked in the top 20. They’re not good enough to win the SEC Champ. game. UGA making the NCAA 4 team playoff is the same as Boston College winning the ACC basketball tournament over Duke, UNC and Syracuse and making the final 4. not gonna happen

DAWG NATION,

This will be another LSU or Bama NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP YEAR in my opinion.

Richt and Bobo = formula for failure in my opinion.

Tide Rising

I’ll put the dawgs at no. 15 because they play in the east and their schedule is so obscenely easy. Now if they played in the west I wouldn’t even rank them in the top 25 since they would automatically have 3 losses right off the bat and probably lose 4 or 5 overall. Lets just hope they don’t get to the SEC title game only to lose by 30+ points again to either LSU or Alabama. And please don’t let them lose another embarrassing bowl game to a middling big 10 team or Central Florida. Sheesh.

This is a typical Georgia team. Short handed along the offensive line. Questions about special teams.
Good backs but no holes. Quarterback gets beat up because of offensive line. Has difficulty functioning against good teams. Coaches outschemed as games progress. We’ll beat the cup cakes and play a good first half against better teams. As I said a typical Georgia team … unfortunately.

I just don’t buy the “easy” schedule theory. We still play Florida, Auburn, and Tennessee, traditional powers. We play Vandy, UK, both teams which have played us well the last few years. South Carolina, is quickly becoming one of our biggest rivalries, especially with Spurrier. Then there’s GT, even though we’ve owned them they have played us tough most years recently. Mizzou is an unknown, like Boise last year. That’s eight games you have to show up prepared to play, something we haven’t done consistently in quite a few years.

Fair n Balanced

August 2nd, 2012
11:34 pm

Expectations too high. Ga has never performed well with such expectations. Ozl still a big question. No proven running back. QB gives up too much to defenses that result in points. Suspensions already, how many to come? Can’t beat SC over there. Mo will be tough. Fl getting better as is AU. We lose 3 easy and maybe 4. Doesn’t matter where we start in polls, we will end up 23 if we can manage 9-3. This won’t be a great season. It’s back to mediocreville.

Àccording to UGAs opponents, we have nothing to be proud of. We are the worst of the worst. Not one redeeming virtue. No talent or integrity anywhere to be found not even a snowballs chance in hell.
Wow people, get a life. The COACHES RANKED UGA #6 IN THE COUNTRY! Maybe that means the rest of the country sux. Maybe it means the COACHES who voted the Doggies #6 don’t know as much about football as you do. Maybe it means all you haters are just jealous and are either dishonest or just don’t know what you’re talking about. Haters gotta hate…

Without suspensions and with Crowell, I’d say UGA has top 5 talent. Regardless, they have a ton to prove and a #15 ranking would be more fitting.

After all, even last year UGA was challenged to the brink by Florida, Vandy, etc, in addition to losing to every good team they played. I’ll be quietly optimistic but still need to see it to believe it.
