Where do the Dawgs belong in the preseason rankings? (Updated)

oval G logoThe players are back in Athens, students are preparing to move into the dorms next week, and the AP and coaches’ preseason rankings are just around the corner.

In the meantime, a couple of fresh rankings are out: CBSsports.com is sticking to what most have predicted by having UGA in its Top 10, ranked No. 6. However, the Sporting News differs a bit, putting Georgia at No. 14, noting that while there’s “a lot to like about the Bulldogs,” Mark Richt’s program still needs to “put it together for a whole season … easier said than done in the SEC,” and establish “some consistency at the tailback position.”

Update: The USA Today coaches’ poll came out Thursday, with Georgia ranked No. 6.

So, what do you think? Richt’s program returns a loaded defense and an experienced quarterback and receivers and generally is favored to win the SEC East again, but is rebuilding its offensive line, continues with the backfield turmoil and still has that early-season suspension question to answer.

We’ve discussed this before, but let’s take a fresh look in the wake of the summer’s events. Are the Bulldogs a legitimate Top 10 team, or is the Sporting News closer to the mark?

Oh, I’m prepared for two or three losses. But I’m HOPING for a 12-0 season. I will not be surprised with two or three losses, but I think there is an opportunity for much more and I sense we might get much more. Of course, that might just be wishful thinking.

The games that scare me in order: FL, SC, AU, and TN. I think we take Mizzou to the woodshed.

I agree with taking Mizzou to the woodshed but I also remember OK St and Boise St sorry but we had better talent than those teams

Yea 12-0 should happen with our schedule and talent level but Richt and Company have shown year after year that they cant beat a good team and they lose to a team they shouldnt have even lost to

Yes, Murray should be top level, even Heisman level in 2012. ESPN’S Heisman Predictor Formula predicted Murray as the 2nd highest player in the country to win the Heisman. The website that’s all over the Heisman, Heisman Pundit, has Murray in the pre-season top 5, and these guys know their stuff.

If we play against Mizzou like we played against OK ST and Boise, we will get beat and CMR should be fired on the spot. I don’t think it will happen, though. However, I’ve been wrong before. I thought the Dawgs would play well against Boise and they were totally unprepared.

12-0 or 9-3. It will be more about the players and luck than coaching just based on the last 2 -3 years.

The only thing that will derail UGA is losing the turnover battle. Really, that’s the only thing that stopped UGA in 2011, went 10-0 when won the to battle, 0-4 when lost the TO battle. That’s my only caveat to picking UGA to win the National Championship. But if Richt is as obsessed with winning the to battle, especially in the big games, as he was in 2007, it will be a magical year.

You wonder if Richt will figure out what the main thing is in the big games, and it’s turnover margin.

I don’t see UGA as a top 10 until they beat Missouri, and UF again. The S.C. game will be interesting. Looking for a win there to crack the top 10. If lil stevie manhandles us, I think it will effect CMR & CMBs future here no matter what we do the rest of the year. I don’t really see us losing bad, but it could happen. We win at S.C., we deserve top 10 billing. If we just lose, we don’t fall far because S.C. should be ranked ahead of us anyway. We beat Auburn 45-7 and I don’t think they improved that much. UT isn’t ready yet, and Vandy is here at home. I’m hopeing UF will be ranked when we meet and we have to beat them back to back for me to think UGA deserves a high ranking. Everything after the S.C.game should move us forward. All this pre-season guessing is really just that. Means nothing, just keeps us toned up for the beginning of the season. One month baby…Oh yeah, there’s GT, but do we really need to go there???

LakeDawg, I have zero expectations this year. The mark of a well coached, well prepared football team is to compete with teams that have better players successfully, i.e. Boise State. The mark of a poorly coached team is UGA, a shortage of scholorship players, multiple suspensions, inexperience at critical positions, etc. We’re still expected to be strong, imagine what we could be if we had a strong coach.

We should be ranked around 12 or 13. Need to work our way to higher positions in the rankings.A win over Mizz and USCe on the road will put us in a chance to go 12-0.However,knowing the current coaching staff and past history in large games;I must predict 9-3 or 8-4. We will lose to USCe and the Gators. One unforseen loss to Auburn or Vols.Only way this does not happen;Richt must change his coaching style and go for the high scores when he has a team down.He always plays not to lose the game unstead of winning the game.Hope I’m wrong but you have to show me big improvement over the past season(no wins in big games).Michigan State game still in my mind.

Have to agree with some of the posts…..I am not sold on Murray and I am pretty sure Bobo is pretty bad. Hate to be negative. I love Georgia and Bulldog Football…but Bobo is so preditable…this post sounds predictable…I have heard it from so many others….Why is Richt so stubborn?! Sticking with what doesn’t work well past the time that it has become painfully obvious!? Bobo goes for the giant play on first, then runs it straight up the middle on 2nd…then its third and long!!! ALWAYS!!! Why does Richt not walk up to the booth and slap him in the back of the head!? All I have ever heard from local and national media is how great Murray is….don’t get me wrong he IS a good quarterback…but he also has this amazing ability to shoot the team in the foot….he gave SC the game last year, and I put a few other losses squarely on his shoulders due to his inability to avoid GIANT mistakes…LSU’s comeback(and eventual clock cleaning) was aided by him giving it to them inside the Dawgs 20. Richt just sticks with the plan..through thick and thin….honestly our winning 10 games in a row last year may have been the worst thing that could have happened to Georgia Football in the long run….because we are still saddled w Richt! I think the Sporting News ranking is spot on unfortunately. Have you watched the replay of the Michigan State game?!!! It is unbelievable that Georgia found a way to loose that game!!! It is just so disheartening…..Georgia has been stuck in the swamp of mediocrity and under achievement for a looooong time. I have said it before but this dates back to the year we had Stafford and Knowsean and we got THUMPED by Alabama in Athens…..that should have been a wake up call…..but is wasn’t. IT is clear that Georgia has been being out coached for years. And last but not least…WHY DO WE NOT HAVE A SPECIAL TEAMS COACH???!!!! AND WHY DO WE ALWAYS SEEM TO NEED HELP ON O LINE!!???? WHAT IS THE PROBLEM HERE!!????

There are a lot of things I don’t understand about Coach Richt. The biggest is why we continue to have problems every year with ou O-line? Are they not important to CMRs offense? We seem to be on the verge of elimination before we even begin playing. After last years problems, why are they being repeated? It’s not time to panic but when will we go into a season with too many o-linemen? When will this become a priority for CMR, when it’s too late???

Çome on man, we got to be real. Until we beat some really good teams, like a top ten team or even a team that’s ranked ahead of us, do we deserve a really lofty ranking? Come on, be honest. Phil Steele & Athlon both have UGA at #8, CBS has UGA at #6, I think UGA comes in on the Preseason AP Poll at #6. Also, I wouldn’t call ESPN’S Heisman Predictor software program a “UGA FAN”, really, a computer is fan of UGA? Nor would I call the folks at Heisman Pundit UGA fans, both who say Murray is a top 5 Heisman candidate. This is about as unbiased as you can get evaluation of Murray’s national expectations for 2012.

I couldn’t care less about ESPN’s BS pre season hit generating predictors. Do you personally think Aaron Murray will go from not even being one of the top 15 QB’s in college football last year to being the Heisman winner? If that is the case I guess Tevin Washington is a Heisman front runner also.

I think this will be the last year for Bobo to prove he deserves to be Offensive Coordinator . Georgia could have at least 2 or 3 position coaches replaced after this year unless they show big improvements.McGarity nearly pulled the trigger last year on some of the coaches. The next three years, after this year will be a lot harder because of the tougher schedule. The addition of Texas A&M and Missouri will make the SEC very difficult. When the SEC already was way harder than any other , two more very good teams were added. Only one or two losses in a year will be a great year for anybody. The SEC will have at least 10 teams in bowl games this year and maybe 11.

If we beat Mizzou on the road, yeah, around 10th. Until then, about where we ended up last season -19th or 20th.

Our last two games last season proved that we still are not ready to play with the better teams – and haven’t been since ‘07.

We will know in week 2 if we can once again go on the road, play well on the national stage, like we did early in Richt’s career, or if we continue the trend of the last 4 years, and lay another egg.

We’ve lost every big game since the beginning of ‘08, mostly in blow-out fashion. Richt better turn that trend around in the next 5 years – else he may not get extended past 2020 next time . . .

My hope is that Florida can be competitive. We have a new offensive coordinator and a head coach who posted the worst record since Galen Hall. Our best defensive lineman is out for awhile. We won’t beat LSU or Georgia or FSU and probably will lose to Tennessee and South Carolina.

Maybe Richt will coach 1 more year than those guys, and you can include that in your silly arguments . . .

I think everybody is overestimating our talent level right now. It had fallen off a good bit. It seems to be building back up, but as I see it, our best talent is our younger talent. On both side, but it’s much more obvious on the offensive side. We may BE a top 10 team, but as of today, ranking them top 10 seems premature. Of cource that is my take completely in a vacuum, and said without looking at specifically what other teams should be. At first glace, I don’t think that list is much longer than10-12 teams.

AltamahaDawg

August 2nd, 2012

The misunderstood thing about that oft used quote from Lombardi, is that he meant from a participation standpoint. As a player, a coach. To them, winning IS the only goal.

He never intended that to be a directive to how fans should behave, or live vicarously through the game.

Joey

August 2nd, 2012

I only used it as an argument to a fan that loves winning % – I bet Lombardi never checked on his winning %, nor Richt either.

Yea, I wasnt really even talking about that. Sometimes I just springboard off of your comments. I figure you will endulge me more than some others.

..although it does seem odd to me to counter with a quote that winning is the only thing that matters, as a dispute when somebody mentions the importance of winning %. But no, I doubt any coach really hangs thier hat on that, when facing each opponets the next time.

harold, in the referenced Sporting news, in this article, I believe Georgia actually faces 3 top 25 teams (Florida + South Carolina + Tech = 3), if you throw in the SEC Chamnpionship and the Bowl, it will be 5 by the end of the year.

Snoop Dawg

Judging player talent, UGA is a top 5 team this year.

Judging coaching talent and leadership, UGA is a bottom 20 team.

So, when you mix it all together, you will get a typical Richt year: Lose to the good teams, beat the patsies, probably blow another unexpected game to a mediocre team. Get embarassed in any playoffs and bowl games.

1) Talent Developer:
a) From a development standard, Mark Richt has sent more guys to the NFL than Saban or Meyer did over the same span.
b) Mark Richt also has coached 2 Hesiman trophy winners, and a 3rd guy who finished runner up.

2) Win %:
Richt has a higher winning percentage than Saban, Miles, or Spurrier.

3) Top 5 finishes as an Asst coach:
A) 14 seasons in a row at FSU FINISHING IN TOP 5 NATIONALLY RANKING
B) O top 5 finishes after Richt left in 2000 at FSU

4) National top 3 finishes as Head Coach:
Richt has had 2 in 11 years at Georgia

By any of those pretty standard measurments of coaching pedigree, Richt’s in his own league as a coach.
