Where do the Dawgs belong in the preseason rankings? (Updated)

oval G logoThe players are back in Athens, students are preparing to move into the dorms next week, and the AP and coaches’ preseason rankings are just around the corner.

In the meantime, a couple of fresh rankings are out: CBSsports.com is sticking to what most have predicted by having UGA in its Top 10, ranked No. 6. However, the Sporting News differs a bit, putting Georgia at No. 14, noting that while there’s “a lot to like about the Bulldogs,” Mark Richt’s program still needs to “put it together for a whole season … easier said than done in the SEC,” and establish “some consistency at the tailback position.”

Update: The USA Today coaches’ poll came out Thursday, with Georgia ranked No. 6.

So, what do you think? Richt’s program returns a loaded defense and an experienced quarterback and receivers and generally is favored to win the SEC East again, but is rebuilding its offensive line, continues with the backfield turmoil and still has that early-season suspension question to answer.

We’ve discussed this before, but let’s take a fresh look in the wake of the summer’s events. Are the Bulldogs a legitimate Top 10 team, or is the Sporting News closer to the mark?

Somewhere between 10-12 I think is reasonable given the returning talent. I think 6 is a little too high to start with given the uncertainty in the secondary for the first couple games and the newbies on the O-Line.

A fair assessment by Sporting News. I think some recruits are watching closely. Can Richt and company put it together for a full season?

around 10 is fine for me, a ton of talent, but have to prove we can put it together. Will need to stay healthy, put a formidable offensive line together(we will know what they are about the first few games because if they struggle with the first few teams it will be hard to do anything against the likes of usce, uf, and especially if we make it to the sec champ game), fix special teams, consistent run game, a lot of questions to fill early on and some luck to stay healthy, but if they can do that and put everything together definitely have the talent to play with anyone, can not forget 2 fresh kickers in the punt and kick game which can win or lose some close ones

Top 10…maybe 7-9 but hey…if we take care of business in Mizzou….top 10 for sure and then ur 5-0 going into Columbia to lay the Ole Ball Coach. And after we take a W out of Columbia….who’s gonna beat us then…the stinkin’ Gators?? Come on!!! That Def that’s supposed to be so good will be on the field for 55 of the 60mins of the game. lol

Bill,

Mark Richt’s team of late, don’t finish in the top 10, so I wouldn’t rank them there. Heck, Richt hasn’t beaten a top 20 team since 2009, so he doesn’t deserve to be ranked in the top 20 until he does.

Mark Richt is 0-9 vs. teams that finish in the top 25 since 2009.

The schedule, Richt will face 5 teams that will finish with winning records (Missouri, GT, Auburn, South Carolina, Florida), Richt wins only 40% against teams with winning records since 2009.

Richt is 0-2 vs. Surrier since 2009 (Lattimore has run for nearly 400 yards in 2 games), and Richt has never beat Fla back to back.

So that’s 3 losses.

And then you have teams like Tenn, Vanderbilt, GT, who have excellent special teams coaches. UGA’s special teams were close to the worst in the nation in punt return defense, kick return defense, and field goal percentage.

Murray also turns the ball over a lot, has committed 23 turnovers in 27 games.

This topic seems like chum for trolls. But – I think Sporting News has it about right. We don’t deserve anything higher unless and until we beat somebody (Mizzou).

can someone explain to me how it is that we have non-UGA fans commenting about UGA on this blog??? Not saying they are not free to come here…..just confused on how a person that is not a fan can take the time to come on to a site that they are not a fan of and give comments about UGA. I mean….u will not find a person that dislikes Florida as much as I do (and my 5 yr old daughter…haha)….but I could never take time out of my day to go on to a Gator site and comments on how much they stink. Hmmmmm. Just basic losers? Kids?? Can soemone shed light on this for me? lol

If we can get through the first 4 games undefeated and get everybody back on defense, then I think our ranking is a little low. If we trip on either games 2 or 4, then I think that we are just about right! Also, our OL is going to have to step up big time!!!!!!!!

For me it’s simple. If we have about the same team as last year AND we can actually run the football this year then I think we are a top 5 team. If we can’t run, then we should be ~ 15 spot or so.

Hey gator, I will go out on a limb here and say that most in the Dawg Nation, outside of these blogs are expecting Murray to step up to another level of outstanding play this season. Oh, yeah, and he was good enough to whip your team in Jax last year. I would not run my mouth if I were you, UGA will take back the momentum in the series this year. UF will be tough, and I am not going to down play your team, I just think the Dawgs rise to occasion in a very important year for the Dawgs.

I’ll get back to you after the SC game and give you a ranking then. I think we have the talent on defense, but Murray and Bobo have not instilled a lot of confidence that they can win big. Murray is 16-11 and Bobo has screwed up the second game of the season every year. If the freshmen running backs can produce 200 yards per game, we have a chance to be really good. Of course, this is all predicated on Bobo giving them the chance to run the ball and not have Murray throw the ball 80 yards down field every play.

Until Murray and Bobo show me they know how to win big games, we will stay around 8-4 maybe 9-3. I’m afraid Bobo has turned into the new Willie Martinez. But feel free to contact me in Dec and tell me I was wrong. I hate it when I’m right!!!

Good question. I have no idea. As far as the UF/UGA game goes though, if UGA can win two in a row over UF for the first time since the 80’s then maybe someone outside of Athens will be impressed.

#12-#15. We need to prove that our offensive line will get the job done for a change, that our group of tailbacks will get the job done, that our 2 freshmen kickers will consistently get the job done, that we can survive whatever the final suspension list is for the early games, and that Coach Bobo will coach 4 aggressive quarters, foot on the gas, until the game is over. That’s a lot to prove…. GO DAWGS..!!!

Columbus Dawg

SSIgator makes a valid point, and Georgia MUST beat Florida this year, make it two in a row, and get the monkey and the media off it’s back. I am one who feels that the Dawgs will do just that. The 2012 UGA -Florida game will in my opinion will be one of the biggest games in UGA history as far as restoring the Dawgs prominence among national powers. The depth on D will unrecognizable to most Dawg fans this season.

There’s an old saying…”you will never lose the game if the other team doesn’t score”….hats off to the Dawgs D!!! Yea, we have a few suspensions but we return 10 of 11 from a top 5 def from last year. Just sayin’….and look at that 1st half of the LSU game…that should not go overlooked. We just need for the O to keep them off the field for the whole darn game. Read …running game a must…hence offensive line and freshman backs better step up!!

Dawgs are not a legitimate pre-season Top Ten. They may earn their way there, but with several downsides looming large, they’ll need to prove a few things, yet. Should be fun to watch.

A team that hasn’t beaten a ranked team in over 2 years, has a patched up offensive line, no quality tailback with any experience, a QB with turnover issues, and several players suspended to start the season are a top 10 team? Has college football really fallen that much?

No higher than 15th. If we get rated any higher, both the team and the fans will start to BELIEVE that pre-season rankings actually mean something…and it’ll screw up both groups.

Jinx

August 1st, 2012

I look at it this way.

We lost to South Carolina by 3 points.

We lost to Michigan State by 3 points.

If we could correct why we lost those 2 nail-biters, we go 12-2 instead of 10-4, it was that close in 2011 to being a top 10 finish.

Also played the #1 ranked team as tough an anyone for 2 quarters, then we kind of fell apart to to self inflicted mistakes on punt return and the offense made some costly turnovers in the 3rd quarter.

As for punt return, either kick it higher, or out of bounds next time. As for the offensive turnovers, take a sack or be more careful with throws especially on your own side of the field. If you do commit a turnover, hold them to a field goal on red zone defense.

So, I’d say this team is a top 10 team.
