Some Vols fans apparently not up for the trip to Athens

georgia bulldog clubAs a Bulldog Club member/Hartman Fund contributor, I got an interesting email Tuesday offering additional tickets to the Sept. 29 Georgia-Tennessee game in Athens.

It seems Vols fans didn’t buy up all the tickets to the game that UGA sent them.

According to the email, “Tennessee recently returned a limited quantity of tickets priced at $70 each. We are extending the offer for you to purchase up to 4 tickets on a first-come, first-served basis. Contractual agreements stipulate that, for home events, schools may charge visiting teams the ticket price our patrons pay at the visiting team’s stadium. The visiting school may return unsold tickets to the home school. Those tickets are to be sold at the face value that is charged to the visiting team.”

The returned tickets that were available are located in the 600 level of Sanford Stadium, and I picked up a couple for one of my brothers.

Anyway, Tennessee returning tickets for a major road game made me wonder if the Big Orange fan base is truly sold on Tyler Bray and Co. this season. Normally you’d expect them to be snapping up all the tickets available to them for that game.

More news emanating from the Bulldog Club this week was Wednesday’s announcement of the cumulative cutoff scores for Hartman Fund contributors that determine assignment of renewable season tickets and away and home single-game tickets.

Basically, this year any contributor who gave a minimum of $250 per seat, ordered season tickets and had a cumulative score (for lifetime contributions) of 250 or higher will receive renewable season tickets. And additional nonrenewable season ticket orders will be filled.

For single-game home tickets, all contributors who wanted them for Buffalo, Florida Atlantic, Vandy and Georgia Tech will receive tickets. For the Tennessee game, all contributors who ordered with a cumulative score of 115,900 or higher will receive tickets. Contributors below 115,900 who purchased tickets that were returned from Tennessee will get them. For Ole Miss, all contributors who ordered with a cumulative score of 22,410 or higher will receive tickets. Contributors below 22,410 who purchased tickets that were returned a while back from Ole Miss priced at $55 will be filled. And for the Georgia Southern game, all contributors who ordered with a cumulative score of 28,500 or higher will receive tickets.

For games away from Sanford Stadium, the cut-off scores for Florida and Auburn have yet to be determined. All contributors who ordered tickets for Missouri, South Carolina and Kentucky will get them.

Any refunds will be mailed in mid-August, which is when tickets also will go into the mail.

MONEY TALKS …

Tyler Bray has been working on his throwing accuracy. (Associated Press)

Interesting development in the case of Tennessee QB Bray, who was accused of throwing bottles onto parked cars from an apartment complex balcony.

Knoxville police say no charges will be filed against Bray because he “reached out” to the vandalism victim and offered to pay for all the damages to her vehicle, so she no longer wishes to prosecute.

What do you think are the odds a UGA player could have gotten a deal like that in Athens?

MITCHELL ALREADY ‘BEST CORNER’

The Athens Banner-Herald had an interesting story about two-way player Malcolm Mitchell’s prospects at cornerback. Secondary coach Scott Lakatos told the paper that Mitchell, who hasn’t yet played defense for Georgia in a real game, is  “probably our best corner,” adding, “He’s a good corner. He’s got a chance to be a great corner.”

Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham also said Mitchell “is very good. He’s good. He’s really good.” And when told that Lakatos said he’s the best corner, Grantham agreed.

“He is,” Grantham said. “He’s a very talented guy.”

That should make fans feel a bit better about the unsettled secondary situation for the Mizzou game.

UGA talks a good game but at the end of the day they are a good 2nd tier SEC team at best and they are used to it.

I think the Vol fans just don’t want to have to hold their noses for 4 hours sitting in the hot sun, in a stadium built on top of a stinking leaking sewer.

I hear you all crowing about being the SEC EAST champ and other fans aren’t any good. You got to admit the fans in Athens are some of the worst in SEC.

We know all you little doggies have high hopes every year that get busted, and this year won’t be any different. However, if you boys would like, we’ll be glad to come over to your little stinky stadium and kick your rears up and down the field and put you in your place.

Or, just wait and meet us in Atlanta, we can do it there too.

Bill, ticket sales are down everywhere, even the NFL. Intelligent SEC fans now realize that with every game on TV(and most HDTV) you have a choice. I am a UT fan and love Athens as a game site but don’t care about going to a night game and getting to my hotel in Gwinnett County about 2 in the morning. Every game is now a game day decision based on weather and KO time.

Tennessee has a problem. The product is not good and the prospects for improvment dim. Georgia has festering, long running problems too. Offensive line, thuggish recruits, lack of player supervison, losing to good teams, being outcoached in the second half of games, too many cupcakes on the schedule. Both schools are beginning to see a similar result — less interested, motivated fan base who is finding a life outside of football games.

There is no doubt that UGA and the police are more stringent than other college towns. Hell, Richt’s Fulmer Cup was made up of at least 50% peeing outside and driving without a license charges. Not exactly a program run amuk. However, this is because UGA and the police made a commitment to curb underage drinking in Athens. I agree with that commitment.

tenn.DAWG, you think all of that is bad? I heard that Jarvis Jones is harboring Yellow Cake Uranium in his apartment and Richt has yet to act. I also heard that Blair Walsh left an upper-decker on the chancelor’s toilet. Even more, I heard that Aarron Murry and Tavaris King threw the huge halftime lead in the Outback Bowl because they didn’t want to win a non-BCS bowl. If you can write stupid hearsay bull crap, I can too.

Vol fan here … two things. (1) The blog needs a small correction – there were two cars damaged (one accidentally on Friday, and one vandalized on Monday). Bray was accused of both incidents. Bray did NOT offer to pay for the vandalized car … he offered to pay for another car that was accidentally. (2) To Dawg Haus – the Vol fan base is deeply split. Many feel that Dooley was dealt a bad hand from Fulmer/Kiffen, but that he has mostly rebuilt the program and will win. This group is expecting great things beginning this year … others (including several sports writers) can see nothing positive about the program, and see everything as doom and gloom. The results from the 2012 season will unite the fan base one way or another.

you are spot on. Like UGA, UT needs to prune some unhealthy branches. I hope for UTs sake, you still have a team left to field a team. We may be finished cutting poor team-mates, but that’s yet to be seen. I think it will get worse at UT because a lot of fans aren’t ready to do what’s necessary to fix the discipline problem there. Heaven help you if they institute a UGA type drug policy. I think Coach Dooley needs this and next year to get the job done. I lived in Sevier Co. for 20+ years and the locals seem to turn a blind eye to bad behavior on the teams. Just telling you what I saw with my own eyes…

http://www.rockytoptalk.com/2011/10/31/2526091/whats-wrong-with-tennessee-football-has-nothing-to-do-with-derek
I think this article which was written around the middle of last season, gives a little explanation to why I am part of the group that thinks Dooley was handed a pretty crappy hand. I mean, from day one, it was a different situation than most. Unlike most coaches that leave after the season, Kiffin left in early January and Dooley wasn’t signed until days before National Signing day. The class that Dooley salvaged was good, keeping a few good players, but if you read that article, you can see what was left of Fulmer’s classes and how thin our team really was. Dooley has dealt with a bunch of young people our schedule has not helped.
I realize that a lot of team has youth, but most teams in the SEC have talented, instant impact youth. Kids like the Crowell’s and Lattimore’s. The youth we were playing was by necessity, not skill. Most of the players that hung around for Dooley would have been hard pressed to be on other team’s 3 deeps as true freshmen, and they were going up against the Bama’s, LSU’s and Scar, Arkansas, and yes even UGA’s of the SEC. All teams with coaches that had been there, depth, and consistency. This is where my frustration comes in with our fans who are impatient and other teams fans who compare us to them. Fans of UGA will make fun of us because we had a losing season? You guys had a losing season 2 years ago. With the senior-most coach in the SEC. Without a coach leaving literally in the middle of the night like the snake Kiffin. UGA fans act all high and mighty as if they have some high moral standards, Dooley has dealt with discipline problems just as much as RIcht has, we just have had less and Dooley has shown that he is willing to get rid of players, regardless of talent. Look at the people he got rid of, some of the players that actually were SEC talent on our team. People that we needed last year and the year before, and heck, even this year. We just have a lower rate of incident. Poke fun of it all you want, the Vols For Life program is really excellent and really is bringing improvement to our player behavior, responsibility and respectability. Also, we right now don’t have as many high caliber, 5star, primadonnas, which someone commented on it earlier, really does have an impact on how much incident you have.
Where I do find my optimism about this season is this is the first year that almost seems normal. Up until this Bray incident, and the Cameron Clear incident earlier, this has been the most for lack of a better word, boring offseason in 4 or so years in Knoxville. The Vols also no longer have he excuse of being young and inexperienced, as we return 19 starters. Our offensive line has gone from being a bunch of true freshmen with 2 or 3 starts combined, to a bunch of juniors and seniors who have pretty much seen the worst they will have seen. The last two Octobers getting their d**ks slammed in the dirt against some of the best talent in football sucked all around for Vols fans and players, but even though it’s still tough, our schedule drops LSU and Ark, and we have some favorable home games this year.
Do I think we are going to win the NC this year? No. Do I think we are going to go undefeated in the east this year? Absolutely not. Do I think we have a good chance of winning the East this year? Absolutely. Heck, Vandy has a good chance of winning the east this year. There are going to be some surprises. Between UGA, UF, UT, Scar, and yes, even Vandy, some teams are going to get upset, knocked off, and beaten by teams from the west. And I wouldn’t be surprised if the east representative had 3 or more losses again.
Now I realize some of you UGA fans are laughing away at this, and that is fine. I am sure you think Dooley is the worst coach in the history of coaches and will never win a game except against 1AA teams. Well, here are facts. Dooley has just as many National Championships as Richt does as a head coach. The only difference is RIcht has had numerous top 10 recruiting classes and pre season rankings. While making fun of our coach, maybe you should take a step back and look at your program. We have excuses, or explanation. Which ever one you like. What’s the reason you guys keep having incidents. How the heck did you not win the NC with the team with Knowshow Moreno and Fatty Matty? As funny as their nicknames are, they were studs. If you couldn’t do it with them, why do you think you can ever do it? Or are you guys content on winning the East every few years. Man, win the east every few years, have lots of people suspended and arrested. Bring in great recruiting classes and nothing come of it? Hmm, sounds a lot like Fulmer’s last few years. But, yeah, go ahead and worry about UT. Worry about what’s happening up there. Make fun of our coach that comes from the Saban model. Make fun of the fact that we had a losing record, even though you are less than 3 years removed from one. I think I might just try to swoop up one of those tickets to go down to Neyland South. It’s been since 2006, that was fun.

A unnamed UGA fans thoughts on the 2012 team….

We have 68 scholarship recruits and only 1 transfer-in for our 14-game schedule. We lose our entire defense after this 2012 season. We haven’t beat a team who made the Top 10 since # 9 Auburn way back in 2006, and have only beat 3 in the Mark Richt era out of 16 games vs teams making the Top 10. This season we don’t even play one with 11 opponents who average 4.8 wins and 1 opponent only who made any even top 25 poll. Our dysfunctional offense has averaged # 52 NCAA Total Offense all 11 years of Mark Richt era. We play the Pro-I which is a Fullback-Oriented Offense. The last 6 recruiting classes, we failed to sign any Fullback. There are over 200 Fullbacks every single year signing with non-Fullback-Oriented Offenses. We did just finally sing a Fullback. And, now we are failing to call police when $ 500 cash and other valuables are stolen by our players from their teammates. We just kicked 3 of them off the team for that, and one of those got kicked off by the team who transferred to. 40 % of the Defensive returning starters who are supposed to be such Solidarity, are suspended, one for hitting a girl and 3 for drugs. Speaking of drugs, we have another player soon to take a total available scholarship recruits down to 67, who has been denied to play by NCAA for unspecified NCAA violations, and the NCAA hasn’t re-instated him, yet with 30 days to go and practices for Fall this season about to begin. National Championship, here we come !
