Sounds like Spurrier might be a little scared of LSU

LSU seems to weigh heavily on Steve Spurrier's mind these days. (Associated Press)

LSU seems to weigh heavily on Steve Spurrier's mind these days. (Associated Press)

Some random thoughts and impressions while we wait for Georgia’s turn Thursday at SEC Media Days …

Some things are as predictable as a summer afternoon thunderstorm in Atlanta, and Steve Spurrier is one of them. So no one was surprised when he took another shot at the difference between the respective SEC West opponents of Georgia and South Carolina again this season: “You think I make the schedule? If I made the schedule, Georgia would be playing LSU, and we’d be playing Ole Miss.” Funny guy. Except you’ve got to wonder whether him continually harping on his displeasure at having to play LSU might not be planting some doubt in his players’ minds about whether their head coach believes they really have no shot at beating the Bengal Tigers. …

Give Spurrier credit, though. He did come up with a great shot at Saint Nick: “It’s easier to win the national championship than the SEC. Ask Nick Saban.” …

SEC Commissioner Mike Slive, noting that strength of schedule will be one of the criteria used by the new college football playoff committee, along with won-loss record, conference championships and head-to-head competition, said those guidelines “will require conferences and institutions to examine their current nonconference scheduling philosophies.” Until that all shakes out, Greg McGarity is probably going to hold off on ordering a new batch of cupcakes. …

Back to Spurrier: Talking about the SEC’s new members, he managed to send another subliminal message: “I think A&M and Missouri are going to be extremely competitive. I think they’re going to win a bunch of games. Wouldn’t surprise me if they weren’t in the hunt to win a division or so. I think they may be right up in there. I think the two crucial games are obviously Georgia and Missouri early and Florida and Texas A&M early. Think those are two interesting ballgames. I hope we’re playing at a different hour that I can watch both of those live. I think those will be very interesting for all of us.” OK, coach, we get it. You’re rooting for Mizzou and A&M. …

Vanderbilt’s James Franklin: “I will tell you this: You play Vanderbilt, you better be ready to play from the beginning of the game to the end.” Which means, what, guard your knees against illegal blocks until the final whistle? …

Missouri receiver T.J. Moe proved he’s got a knack for a memorable quote when he sarcastically summed up the SEC-is-tough notion by saying, “They’ve also got prettier girls, the air’s fresher and the toilet paper’s thicker.” Moe also said that his team’s opener against Georgia is “probably going to be the most anticipated game in Missouri football history,” but at the same time he took a shot at the Dawgs by saying of the conference’s reputation: “It’s not all 12 teams who are dominating everybody. It’s one or two. The rest are kind of … average.” Ah, bulletin board material. …

Rumors are circulating that Sanders Commings will be the only Bulldog suspended for Georgia’s game with Mizzou. Since the original report on impending multi-game suspensions for Bacarri Rambo and Alec Ogletree was itself little more than a rumor coming from a high school coach and was never confirmed by anyone at UGA, we’re now dealing with rumors about rumors. How about we wait until Mark Richt actually has something to say about this. ….

A lot of folks were surprised that the Florida Atlantic game will be at night since Georgia hasn’t played a non-BCS opponent in the evening hours since 2000. I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather watch Georgia play a team like that at nighttime in mid-September than around noon. And I’m sure the tailgaters and downtown Athens merchants will appreciate the longer pregame period. Meanwhile, you’ve got to wonder how much of Sanford Stadium will be empty when the Dogs kick off against Buffalo at 12:21 p.m. on Sept. 1.

I hope our O line can gel quickly…..if they can make some seams for the backs we should be better than alright at running the ball. This kid Gurley is NO JOKE! 244 yds in the state championship w 4 TD’s! Samuel was coming on last year…Malcome is a workhorse and we will see what Marshal can do! Man if we can rotate these guys and keep em fresh we may be able to go back to the Dooley days of pounding and pounding the ball! This could be a great thing for our Defense, which I think everyone believes will be our strength…Come on Bobo! Help the D out, PLEASE!!!! Please no two throws deep then run up the middle then punt! Be patient and let these guys grind out 3-4 yarders all day!!!!

I agree with your concept. Run the bawl, and eat the clock. Keep the D. fresh…The only problem is we have to “spread it”, roll-out passes, fullback passes, two tightend sets, end arounds. Work that edge then bust it between the tackles . Get then back on their heels, then hit MM deep. Let Rico go-go. Open it up…

It will be a tough game. Their defence is very good, probably the best we may see all year. Only LSU & BAMA have as good as the lame-crows.(and UGA)…Our offense should be better, so we just have to contain Lattie and get to Shaw…

Have you heard any updates on Lattimore, kingdaddy? Coming back from such a surgery is no simple task. I’m sure he’ll play against the Dawgs, but the question is will he be at 100%? Based on what I’ve read, it sounds like Stevie is rushing him in his rehab, which doesn’t surprise me at all. I feel bad for the kid. He seems like a good dude, unlike his coach.

Bill, will someone point out that in 2008 UScar did play Ole Miss and UGA did play LSU, and Alabama, and a better Auburn team than Arkansas. And of course UScar still didn’t win the east. They can only win the east when UGA, UF, AND UT suck. Does no reporter do their homework. It’s cyclical. But one thing is constant, Uscar will always be a red headed step child in the SEC.

It seems to me that one of Coach Bobo’s play-calling weaknesses has been discontinuing what is working in an effort to achieve balance, or to “get other guys involved” with the offense. The goal of an offense should be to maximize its points total while being aware of the need to keep the defense off of the field to some degree. Yet, Coach Bobo NEVER keeps our foot on the gas pedal for an entire game. It’s never been tried…. We get a lead, and we slow down to see how far behind us the other team is, in our rear view mirror. If pounding the ball against a certain team works, we should pound it 50 times with an occasional pass just for fun. If throwing the ball all over the field is working, we should continue until the defense stops us, instead of Coach Bobo stopping us. Coach Bobo needs to learn this at some point, if Georgia is going to get past being a decent, but not great, team….. GO DAWGS!!!

Also, when we do run the ball, we need more than 2 or 3 running plays. Use the fullback, bring back the endangered toss sweep, have a few quick-hitting runs. Our selection of running plays is limited, and dull………..

How convenient of the Evil Genius to forget that USC did not play either Bama or LSU in 2010. The scheduling crap is old. The SEC schedule rotates. No one can do a thing about it. The Dawgs will get stuck with LSU and Bama again in a few years. No one is going to cry any tears for them when it happens. The Dawgs have an easy schedule in most people’s eyes because UF, UT and AUB are seen as being down. That might just change once the season begins. No one really knows how a team is going to be until they’ve actually played a few games. No one saw Auburn as BCS champs a couple of years ago. No one. The schedule might turn out to be much harder than anyone could guess. Everyone plays cupcakes. USC plays UAB, Wofford and East Carolina. Wow, those are terrifying opponents. The schedule is what it is so clam up.

He’s a jackas@@# period. Besides- why don’t they ask someone who’s relevent in natl championship talks? He certainly isn’t- this guy has lost his mojo since he left UF, enjoy 11-2 and what? Well he certainly is NOT worried about UGA that is for sure.

I suspect that he is simply smarter than the UGA beaners who knows that after he dispatches of UGA in Columbia once again the only pediment to the SECCG will be trips to Baton Rouge and a home date vs Arkansas.

I suspect after the coming UGA meltdown at Missouri that Spurrier will feel much more confident that scheduling is not going to impeded his trip back to the SECCG.

Coach has a point–UGA is only got 1 preseason team on the schedule that is in the top 25 (that being USC). USC has 4 listed in the top 25. I think its obvious who has the easier schedule (thats UGA by the way)

It makes since that you would have something to say about Spurrier comment regarding USC’s schedule vs. UGA’s….you (and other UGA fans) are hyper-sensitive about anyone pointing out the FACT that UGA’s schedule is as easy as anybody can remember.

Why is it that UGA players can take cheap shots, but other players cannot? I never see the outrage when a UGA player does it…but God help everybody when an somebody does it against a UGA player…you guys talk about it for years.

So if Rambo and Ogletree don’t get suspended, can you guys shutup about the myth that UGA punishes players more than any other team in the free world?

God…I now see where all the UGA fans get their propoganda.

A few salient comments about UGA:

1. Four different SEC teams have won the last six BCS championships.

2. UGA was not one of those teams.

3. During that period, UGA did not win the SEC championship.

4. Red panties.

In other words, UGA has sunk into total irrelevancy both regionally and nationally.

So why is UGA paying Mark Richt millions of dollars a year?
