LSU seems to weigh heavily on Steve Spurrier's mind these days. (Associated Press)
Some random thoughts and impressions while we wait for Georgia’s turn Thursday at SEC Media Days …
Some things are as predictable as a summer afternoon thunderstorm in Atlanta, and Steve Spurrier is one of them. So no one was surprised when he took another shot at the difference between the respective SEC West opponents of Georgia and South Carolina again this season: “You think I make the schedule? If I made the schedule, Georgia would be playing LSU, and we’d be playing Ole Miss.” Funny guy. Except you’ve got to wonder whether him continually harping on his displeasure at having to play LSU might not be planting some doubt in his players’ minds about whether their head coach believes they really have no shot at beating the Bengal Tigers. …
Give Spurrier credit, though. He did come up with a great shot at Saint Nick: “It’s easier to win the national championship than the SEC. Ask Nick Saban.” …
SEC Commissioner Mike Slive, noting that strength of schedule will be one of the criteria used by the new college football playoff committee, along with won-loss record, conference championships and head-to-head competition, said those guidelines “will require conferences and institutions to examine their current nonconference scheduling philosophies.” Until that all shakes out, Greg McGarity is probably going to hold off on ordering a new batch of cupcakes. …
Back to Spurrier: Talking about the SEC’s new members, he managed to send another subliminal message: “I think A&M and Missouri are going to be extremely competitive. I think they’re going to win a bunch of games. Wouldn’t surprise me if they weren’t in the hunt to win a division or so. I think they may be right up in there. I think the two crucial games are obviously Georgia and Missouri early and Florida and Texas A&M early. Think those are two interesting ballgames. I hope we’re playing at a different hour that I can watch both of those live. I think those will be very interesting for all of us.” OK, coach, we get it. You’re rooting for Mizzou and A&M. …
Vanderbilt’s James Franklin: “I will tell you this: You play Vanderbilt, you better be ready to play from the beginning of the game to the end.” Which means, what, guard your knees against illegal blocks until the final whistle? …
Missouri receiver T.J. Moe proved he’s got a knack for a memorable quote when he sarcastically summed up the SEC-is-tough notion by saying, “They’ve also got prettier girls, the air’s fresher and the toilet paper’s thicker.” Moe also said that his team’s opener against Georgia is “probably going to be the most anticipated game in Missouri football history,” but at the same time he took a shot at the Dawgs by saying of the conference’s reputation: “It’s not all 12 teams who are dominating everybody. It’s one or two. The rest are kind of … average.” Ah, bulletin board material. …
Rumors are circulating that Sanders Commings will be the only Bulldog suspended for Georgia’s game with Mizzou. Since the original report on impending multi-game suspensions for Bacarri Rambo and Alec Ogletree was itself little more than a rumor coming from a high school coach and was never confirmed by anyone at UGA, we’re now dealing with rumors about rumors. How about we wait until Mark Richt actually has something to say about this. ….
A lot of folks were surprised that the Florida Atlantic game will be at night since Georgia hasn’t played a non-BCS opponent in the evening hours since 2000. I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather watch Georgia play a team like that at nighttime in mid-September than around noon. And I’m sure the tailgaters and downtown Athens merchants will appreciate the longer pregame period. Meanwhile, you’ve got to wonder how much of Sanford Stadium will be empty when the Dogs kick off against Buffalo at 12:21 p.m. on Sept. 1.

There will be more people in attendance for the Buffalo/UGA game than for the UGA/Missouri game. Everyone keeps saying how “electric” that atmosphere will be in “The Zou”. It’ll only be 71,004 electric.

Whoops. Wrong blog. Based on the picture at the top of the article I thought this was the dude from Car Talk. Was gonna ask him what that strange clunking noise is coming from the trunk of my 1993 Pontiac Grand Am. It sounds kinda like this: “clunk, clunk, clank, c-c-c-c-c-c-c-clunk.” Anybody got any ideas? Anybody?

@Clunk. Those are Paul Johnson’s manoobies. Just run a base 4-3 with everybody staying home, that will take care of it. Like what you ran in high school.

Story title is very misleading. Spurrier is obviously referencing Georgia’s relative cupcake schedule yet another year. It definitely helped them back into the SEC East title last year.

He really gets under Dawg fans skin doesn’t he? Haha It seems to be working. USC’s schedule is about 10x harder than UGA’s. We’ll find out in October though who is better.

That would be like Richt. He’ll probably find some bogus way to let Commings off the hook too.
What a sleazebag.

Spurrier was caught eating liver and onions at Piccadilly in the B’ham Mall. I bet he did that as a deliberate shot at the Dawgs and Coach Grantham. He is such a whiner.

Off of what “hook” Daniel? Did they break any NCAA rules that you are aware of? Or do anything that is a “hook” at your school?

T.J.Moe from Missouri has never been apart of a conference like the SEC. How did he like playing Texas and Oklahoma in the same year? Well, now that Missouri is in the SEC he will find that Missouri doesn’t have only two games like Texas and Oklahoma but now they will have 6 every year if they are lucky. Better have the depth to handle that many good teams in a year or November and the start of December will be very long months for Missouri.
He will modify his statement by the end of the year. But , if Missouri wins the East they will have earned it. I predict that Missouri will go 7-5 this year. The game will Georgia will tell a lot about Missouri and Georgia.

Come on Bill King, still whining about Vandy’s alleged “illegal blocks” because they took Georgia to the wire? Alabama beat Vandy 34-0 the week before and I never read a word about “illegal blocks”.
Did Vandy play too rough for Georgia? What a pity.

Mizzou’s schedule in the Big-12 most years was pretty paltry. Kansas, K-ST, Iowa St, OKie ST, along with Texas and OK. Rarely have they had a brutal schedule. They might beat Georgia (although I doubt it) but, the deeper they get into the SEC schedule the more depleted they become

It has to gall Spurrier to have the best team in the east and get knocked out of the championship game by western division teams while UGA backs in. It will probably happen again this year. Good old Richt. No one is better at manipulating suspensions away from key games.

My reply to SOS comments:
What does he gain out of this stupid argument? It will not change anything…if anything it looks as though he is making excuses for SCU’s impending
failure to win the East because of his schedule.
Hell….if he would just beaten Auburn last year (at home no less) then they win the East. The Dawgs trashed them 45-7 and yet his team lays an egg vs an
inferior team at home.
Plus, if he had been the genius everyone thinks he is then why
didn’t he let his more talented backup QB play instead of Garcia.
His inept decision to hitch his wagon to Garcia and the lack of being
prepared vs Auburn cost him the Division title…not the damn
schedule.
Plus, in ‘08, SOS wasn’t too concerned with UGA’s schedule when the Dawgs played both LSU and Alabama. Today he’s enamored with our
schedule. He can pound sand.

909 you obviously haven’t paid attention to what it takes to what it takes to get into UGA in the last 20 years. Yes, Jan Kemp exposed what everyone already knew about the athletic dept. Since the Hope Scholarship was established, it hasing become increasing more difficult to get accepted to UGA.
As for UGA athletes, we do very well compared to other institutions. I’m proud to be a graduate of UGA. But I would never be accepted today with my SAT scores.
