Sounds like Spurrier might be a little scared of LSU

LSU seems to weigh heavily on Steve Spurrier's mind these days. (Associated Press)

LSU seems to weigh heavily on Steve Spurrier's mind these days. (Associated Press)

Some random thoughts and impressions while we wait for Georgia’s turn Thursday at SEC Media Days …

Some things are as predictable as a summer afternoon thunderstorm in Atlanta, and Steve Spurrier is one of them. So no one was surprised when he took another shot at the difference between the respective SEC West opponents of Georgia and South Carolina again this season: “You think I make the schedule? If I made the schedule, Georgia would be playing LSU, and we’d be playing Ole Miss.” Funny guy. Except you’ve got to wonder whether him continually harping on his displeasure at having to play LSU might not be planting some doubt in his players’ minds about whether their head coach believes they really have no shot at beating the Bengal Tigers. …

Give Spurrier credit, though. He did come up with a great shot at Saint Nick: “It’s easier to win the national championship than the SEC. Ask Nick Saban.” …

SEC Commissioner Mike Slive, noting that strength of schedule will be one of the criteria used by the new college football playoff committee, along with won-loss record, conference championships and head-to-head competition, said those guidelines “will require conferences and institutions to examine their current nonconference scheduling philosophies.” Until that all shakes out, Greg McGarity is probably going to hold off on ordering a new batch of cupcakes. …

Back to Spurrier: Talking about the SEC’s new members, he managed to send another subliminal message: “I think A&M and Missouri are going to be extremely competitive. I think they’re going to win a bunch of games. Wouldn’t surprise me if they weren’t in the hunt to win a division or so. I think they may be right up in there. I think the two crucial games are obviously Georgia and Missouri early and Florida and Texas A&M early. Think those are two interesting ballgames. I hope we’re playing at a different hour that I can watch both of those live. I think those will be very interesting for all of us.” OK, coach, we get it. You’re rooting for Mizzou and A&M. …

Vanderbilt’s James Franklin: “I will tell you this: You play Vanderbilt, you better be ready to play from the beginning of the game to the end.” Which means, what, guard your knees against illegal blocks until the final whistle? …

Missouri receiver T.J. Moe proved he’s got a knack for a memorable quote when he sarcastically summed up the SEC-is-tough notion by saying, “They’ve also got prettier girls, the air’s fresher and the toilet paper’s thicker.” Moe also said that his team’s opener against Georgia is “probably going to be the most anticipated game in Missouri football history,” but at the same time he took a shot at the Dawgs by saying of the conference’s reputation: “It’s not all 12 teams who are dominating everybody. It’s one or two. The rest are kind of … average.” Ah, bulletin board material. …

Rumors are circulating that Sanders Commings will be the only Bulldog suspended for Georgia’s game with Mizzou. Since the original report on impending multi-game suspensions for Bacarri Rambo and Alec Ogletree was itself little more than a rumor coming from a high school coach and was never confirmed by anyone at UGA, we’re now dealing with rumors about rumors. How about we wait until Mark Richt actually has something to say about this. ….

A lot of folks were surprised that the Florida Atlantic game will be at night since Georgia hasn’t played a non-BCS opponent in the evening hours since 2000. I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather watch Georgia play a team like that at nighttime in mid-September than around noon. And I’m sure the tailgaters and downtown Athens merchants will appreciate the longer pregame period. Meanwhile, you’ve got to wonder how much of Sanford Stadium will be empty when the Dogs kick off against Buffalo at 12:21 p.m. on Sept. 1.

Not sure about the rest of the stadium, but the student section will be pretty bare until halftime for the Sept 1 game against Buffalo since it’s a 12:21 PM kickoff.

it would be great if Sanders Commings is the only player suspended for the Mizzou game…that would be awesome to go in there almost fully loaded so UGA can really make a statement!! *fingers crossed*

Spurrier is being Spurrier. He loves the attention. He keeps it interesting. The Mizzou game will be interesting. I think our defense should hold it’s own. 3 keys to that game(heck, to all games):
1) Will the last 2 years Murray show up or a matured Murray?
2) Will the O-Line be ready to create a running game?
3) Will the special teams make a tackle?

This Mo guy really didn’t say anything wrong. Last year it was Bama & LSU. There was a fall off in talent after them, but then again put those 2 teams in any conference last year and the same will be said. AND, it was great bulletin Board material. Let’s see if the Dawgs use it!

Control the ball, control the game, DIT. If the Dawgs can establish the run and keep Missouri’s offense off the field, they should win that one. The D will hold their own in that game, but we can’t have them running on fumes in the second half.

Interesting about the suspension rumors. Thanks for the updated information. This is the problem in today’s technological age. Any idiot with a computer can put out fake “spumors” about a team, a player, etc.

When Spurrier got to UF, he immediately dropped Miami from the schedule. Auburn was no longer a yearly rival, and he opened up the week before the UGA game. I don’t think these are bad decisions or underhanded. He is just not a guy that can talk about strength of schedule when he will take every opportunity he can.

The truth of the situation is that he just wants to get under Richt’s skin (or whoever) in hopes that they will try to play differently and emotionally in some small way. Richt should get up there and tell Steve to quit his whining.

With recent winning ways at SC, Spurrier’s head is swelling allowing him to again take pot shots at other SEC coaches and teams. He’s getting back into the spot light aka his FL days as HC and he loves it. Give him credit for making SC a pretty good football team.

Can’t see rambo, et tal, coming off suspension so soon for MO game. Doesn’t sound like CMR. Would be great if they did play as they’ll need all their guns in MO. The dawgs need to win and win big. Might put some fear into spurrier’s swelled head.

Moe, probabily watched those two ESPN blowhards yesterday who predicted Ga would lose to Mizzou.

Funny thing, the same two predicted SC would easily beat Mizzou,”because of their D-line and that they would be able to put pressure on Mizzou’s offense. Yes, Ga is really lacking in those areas.

Way to set Mizzou up and I love the fact that the media is disrespecting this Georgia team and it’s defense. Missouri’s going to be in for a shock.

Yes, it’s the biggest game in their history, their problem is they will be going up against one of the best defenses in their history.

Our friends will be in NOLA during the UGA-USC game. Can’t wait to see the visor hit the grass. Stop whining Spurrier. Your accolades in regards to scheduling are well known and minus the non-conf cupcakes this year our schedule is up to the SEC. “Yous set the rules, and we’ll play by them.” I know someone who said that recently. We can’t help that our rotation this year favor by the way of an up wet and more down east. Luck of the draw. Nobody sees us crying when it’s stacked the other way. It is what it is and we’ll play for it as best we can this year. Just like any other team in the same position.

And Bill, nice burn on Franklin. Very nice. There is some bad blood with them. Like we had bad blood with Auburn last year because of Nick Fairly the year before. I think a score of 45-7 Dawgs would suffice. But I digress… first things first. Have you seen Buffalo’s punt snapper! How can we hang with such technique?

Dawgs always over analyze and complain about everything Spurrier says. His comment on wanting to watch the A&M / Florida and UGA / Mizz games is a great example of that. Geeze .. he didn’t even hint at chosing a side in those comments. However, he does want to win the East, so wouldn’t it be natural that he cheers for the teams that give him the best shot at doing so. No matter what the man says, you Dawgs always know exactly what he means and it always him “whinning” or “a shot at Georgia.” Geeze .. just enjoy the man as something refreshing in a leauge of boring but talented head coaches .. you will miss the OBC when he is finally gone. For more reasons that just his barbs.

Correct about the part the school never came out and said that these two were going to be suspended. It has been all speculation. Usually, it’s announced pretty quickly. By staying silent about them could be advantageous. Don’t play them in the Buff. game, stay silent and line them up to play against Mizzou. Maybe, just maybe, Mizzou would not plan around the 2 playing? Just a thought.

I think if you are going to go McGaritys route and schedule these cupcakes, then you must try to play them at night. It atleast brings a better atmosphere and cooler temperatures. I hate 12pm games with a passion! 3:30 games are okay later in the season, but 6pm or later are the best times. Football should be played under the lights. I hate seeing a late arriving crowd every season for these early cupcake games.

Spurrier has been called many names and most are uncomplimentery but the guy can coach. If you don’t think so go back to his days at Duke. However, he is crying about a schedule system that has been very good to UGA and cost him the SEC East Division Championship in 2011 but surely he can recall when Tennessee and Florida dominated the SEC a few short years ago.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He is a little like Saban when it comes whining to gain an advantage for his ream.

He has been called “SOB” but if he was coaching your favorite team he would become “your SOB”. As a DAWG FAN, I personally would like to see him retire but the thing I admire most is his humorous barbs he dishes out to EVERYBODY……………………..including Nick Saban!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We should beat Missouri whether all those defensive players are suspended or not. But, if Sanders Commings is the only guy suspended for the Missouri game then there is no excuse to not go in there and put it on them. The fact that those guys on ESPN U broke down Missouri’s schedule yesterday after their Media Day interview and had Georgia as a win for them and teams like Florida and Tennessee as a loss for them show that Georgia has a lot to prove in this game.

Funny how a THuga writer smugly comments on Spurrier being nervous about playing the big boys of the league when you guys get by for the second year in a row of not having to play lsu, bammer or arky. AU will beat you this year in Auburn and probably send CSS to the SECC this year, which they will have deserved instead of georgia and that lame schedule.

AltamahaDawg,
I agree with you there. For your opener you should play a team like Buffalo since there is no preseason in College football. I think that it gets us ready for the next week when we play Missouri. Plus its our opening game and there is excitment no matter who takes the field against us. My only problem though is throwing a team like Georgia Southern in there on November 17th.

AltamahaDawg

What problem do oyu have with GSU in Nov? Just asking. Thats a pretty demanding stretch Oct, Nov. I don’t see an issue taking a bit of a break just befoire the tech game. PLus that’s about as good of a game to get ready for the tripple option as it gets. I see that as the perfect time to play GSU.

Now,, if you just don’t think we need to be playing GSU, that’s fair. I personally thinks its a good deal for the State every 4 yrs or so.

My original point was that nobody was questionng our OOC schedule when it opened on the road at Lousville and ended on the Road at Tech. Nobody was complaining about the other two already scheduled at that point, either. But Rational Georgia fans know why we traded to get into that ChichFilA game last year.

I really don’t see too many Georgia fan making the point based on Stength of schedule as much as disappointed on the team for the opener. An opener we didn’t even have before.. seems odd to complain about that.

If Missouri score a touchdown on our defense I will be shock. It’s time for Mr Richt to start dominating teams that have lesser talent than what he has. We have had more talent than any team in the sec since 2002-10 so why aren’t we winning championships? If he can’t get it done this season, I doubt he will ever get it done.
