What does Mark Richt have to do to shut up the naysayers? (Associated Press)
Let’s get straight to some of this week’s Junkyard Mail. …
Matt Barrett writes: It seems that over the past week I’ve started seeing a return of the meme among national sportswriters about Mark Richt still not being completely off the hot seat along with questions being raised about whether Isaiah Crowell’s arrest is an indication that discipline is one of the head coach’s major weaknesses. I don’t get it. He kicked his top tailback off the team the same day the kid was arrested, without even waiting to see what happened to the charges in court. The other disciplinary problems this spring have mainly been attributable to Georgia having one of the strictest drug test policies in the country. How much tougher can you get? As for the hot seat, Richt won 10 in a row last year and took the SEC East. Bill, what does Richt have to do to put this “hot seat” nonsense to rest?
Basically, in order to shift the perception among the sports media, Richt needs to win a championship — at the very least the SEC and preferably a national title. That would pretty much shut everyone up on the subject.
I think the Crowell arrest provided the main impetus for this latest wave of media skepticism about Richt. It started with Travis Haney of ESPN Insider putting Richt on “the precursor to the hot-seat list,” suggesting “there is a recurring discipline breakdown among Richt’s teams … When Richt has to suspend or dismiss a player, especially a highly touted player such as Crowell, it hurts the program in terms of losing talent as well as in terms of perception. Those dings add up over time for a coach trying to win games in the country’s toughest conference.”
ESPN SEC blogger Edward Aschoff then jumped on the bandwagon, noting that after the Bulldogs ended the season being “blown out” by LSU (does a second-half comeback by the Tigers really constitute a blowout?) and suffering a triple-overtime loss to Michigan State in the Outback Bowl that “Richt is still feeling some heat in 2012. The 0-2 finish irked fans, and his new contract isn’t exactly comforting, as he was given an extension, but no raise. It hasn’t helped that numerous discipline issues have plagued Richt’s teams over the years, leaving many to wonder just how much control he’s had with his players.” Aschoff concluded that “Until Richt can bring home another SEC title, he’ll continue to feel the heat.”
Also piling on this week was Pete Fiutak of Collegefootballnews.com, who wrote that “the problem with the 2011 season was that it gave the [Georgia] program a false sense of everything being on the right track. Instead, the Bulldogs appear to be further mired in a sort of SEC purgatory that they haven’t been able to get out of for several years, staying one step behind the biggest of the SEC big boys depending on the season, but being just good enough under Mark Richt to make it seem like they’re just one tweak, one good break, one big everything-goes-right season away from finally winning the national title for the first time in over 30 years.” Fiutak pretty accurately summed up the situation: “The talent has been on par with all the other superpower programs in the SEC — and yes, Georgia is a superpower program. The coaching has been fine and the support from the school and fan base have been terrific. But for whatever reason in a league where the difference between being an elite team and winning a national championship is paper thin, there’s something missing.” Richt, he said, “still hasn’t proven he can take the program that one final step further, and while it might seem totally unfair and completely unreasonable to suggest that a guy who has gone 106-38 in 11 years as a coach of an SEC team hasn’t gotten the job done, yeah, compared to Alabama, LSU, Florida and Auburn over the last seven years he hasn’t done enough. In the SEC you’re either a national championship program or you’re not.”
Which pretty much answers your question, Matt.

Do these mean anything to college football fans in Montana? Are there any college football fans in Montana? (Associated Press)
Sam Jackson writes: I see that Sports Illustrated’s Stewart Mandel is once again saying that Georgia is not a “national power” in college football, unlike Alabama, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State, Texas and USC. Besides the fact that his inclusion of Miami and Notre Dame on his national power list pretty much shows this guy is stuck in the 1990s, how would you answer this, Bill?
I’m still trying to figure out Mandel’s rather convoluted thinking on this. He says “the goal here is not to rank programs based on winning percentage, national championships, bowl wins or any other quantitative measure, though those things undoubtedly matter.” Rather, he says, being a national power carries “a certain cachet or aura. It’s the way a program is perceived by the public. Let me put it to you this way. Suppose we went to, say, Montana. And suppose we found 100 ‘average’ college football fans (not necessarily message-board crazies, but not twice-a-year viewers, either) and put them in a room. If I held up a Michigan helmet, my guess is all 100 would know exactly what it was. … But if I held up a Georgia ‘G’ helmet, how many of them do you think would be able to identify it off the top of their heads?”
OK, putting aside the question of whether folks in Montana have even the remotest idea of what big-time college football looks like, I’d say Mandel’s criteria is rather … limited. So what is the case for Georgia being a national power? Well, if you have one of the game’s most recognizable mascots who’s been named the nation’s best and plastered on the cover of Sports Illustrated, you consistently rank in the Top 10 nationally in licensed merchandise sales, Forbes magazine ranks you in the Top 10 of college football’s most valuable programs, you’re ranked as the second most profitable college football program after the Texas Longhorns, and ESPN announcers frequently drop into an imitation of your longtime announcer, there’s little doubt you’re a major player on the national stage.
Jackson from Dublin writes: Dear Bill, I love the Junkyard Blawg and read every post when I am on the internet. I am sick and tired of hearing how easy our schedule is! I believe at worst Georgia goes 10-2, and I really hope we can go 12-0. However, I am going with 11-1, with one minor slip-up, and winning the east. However, let’s say that was Kentucky’s schedule … Kentucky would at best go 5-7! … If it really was a cupcake schedule I think every SEC team could be bowl eligible with it. However, UK, Ole Miss, and UT could not reach 6 wins with this schedule! … We can’t help UT, Florida, Auburn and Tech are down. Heck, LSU plays a down Auburn (along with Bama) and Florida team. Are we hearing anything on their conference schedule? The West is just stronger than the East right now. It cycles … a couple of years ago the East was the best, now its the West. Everything in sports cycles. GO DAWGS!!!
The talk about Georgia’s schedule is based mainly on two factors this year: The nonconference schedule is cupcake-heavy, with only Georgia Tech being a major program; and for the second year in a row the Dawgs don’t have to play any of the three toughest programs from the SEC West: Alabama, LSU and Arkansas. But UGA only has control over the nonconference part of the schedule, and it’s in fact not that different from what other SEC programs are doing. Next year, there’ll be one less cupcake, as Clemson comes on. As for the “easy” SEC schedule, as you correctly note, that is cyclical. In 2009 Georgia played Arkansas and LSU (in addition to having Oklahoma State and Arizona State for nonconference games). In 2008, Georgia had both Alabama and LSU. Georgia plays Auburn, Tennessee and Florida every year. Yes, they’re somewhat down right now, but a few years ago so were Alabama and LSU!

Should Vince Dooley speak his mind about the Georgia program? (Associated Press)
Beach Dawg writes: Bill, Always appreciate your candid perspective on all things Dawg. What do you think about Vince’s comments on Crowell? Is he right? I know he’s free to discuss anything he wants, but is it appropriate for him to be making those kind of comments?
For anyone who might have missed it, Beach is referring to Vince Dooley’s comments to the AJC’s Chip Towers that the 2012 Dogs losing Isaiah Crowell “may have been the best thing to happen to them. … It was a bad-apple type thing, if you ask me.” He added that, “Historically when things like this have happened in the past, they tend to have a unifying effect on teams. They go on to have an even better season than they were predicted to have.” While some fans might think former coaches ought to stay out of these things, I believe Dooley has earned the right to say pretty much anything he wants to about the Georgia program. And while in the short term there might be some dissension on the team over how quickly Crowell was dumped, I think in the long run Dooley’s view might prove correct.
Danny Lyon writes: Bill, did you see Every Day Should Be Saturday’s rundown on Your BCS Team as a Drug? I know this sort of thing isn’t politically correct, but I thought most of it was pretty funny. At first, I didn’t get the Georgia entry — “Zero pattern, pretty good but not great, numbing … Xanax. UGA is Xanax” — but then I looked up the drug and saw it’s used to treat anxiety disorders and panic disorder and works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain. So I guess they’re saying we’re dull.
You think maybe they’re not big fans of Mike Bobo? You’re right, though. It’s a fun piece. I particularly liked the entry for South Carolina: “Gas-huffing. Hard to explain the appeal to non-devotees. Headaches, vomiting, delusions. Users are loyal beyond all reason.” And the one for Ohio State was another highlight: “Weed. Wildly popular. Gets smoked by SEC football players in bowls.” You can check out the rest here, but be aware that the language gets a little PG-13.
I’ll answer more Junkyard Mail next week, so if you have something you want to discuss concerning UGA athletics or a question for the Junkyard Blawg, send it to junkyardblawg@gmail.com.

Why do you continue to use “big words” like CONVOLUTED???
Do you have no compassion for your Bammy, Auburn or USCe readers???
Most may not have a dictionary handy and will probably just skim over that type “big word” and miss out on your intent or not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Columbus Dawg;
I hope you are right. Our line may improve, but I just do not feel like we have the talent to compete with the top teams. We have not concentrated our recruiting on the o-line like we have the other areas, and it has been exposed. Even with renewed enthusiasm, our talent level is not up to par with LSU or ‘Bama. If we will seriously recruit (and keep) several top prospects, we will be much better. I’m a Dawg through and through, but the boys up front on the o-line are not quite ready for prime time.

The statement you made about CMR shouldn’t recruit IC types is such great demonstration of your lack of knowledge about the real world. Every coach in America would have LOVED to get IC’s signature on that LOI so that shoots down ANY credibilty of ANYTHING you write.

@ old dawg:
When you go back and review UGA’s 2011 season you can plainly see that UGA should have lost only 2 games at the most. Boise was a better team when we played them. We should have beaten USCe by at least 2 or 3 tds as Spurrier noted publically and LSU game could easily been a much closer had UGA not dropped 2 sure TD passes which would have given UGA a 24 – 0 halftime lead especially since the D held LSU without a 1st down in the 1st half and a number of missed field goals cost us the MSU bowl game. All this could easily have happened with only a slight hint of a running game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Braniac,
But it didn’t. I agree that there are some who never played the game on any level who do not know what the deal is, but if you DID play at any level, then it is obvious that while we are good enough to beat the bad teams, we are not good enough to beat the good ones. Sure, we let S.C. get away, but we should have won the Michigan State game for sure, too. Their defensive lineman looked like Sapp in his prime in the 2nd half. Even with the two dropped passes when we jumped out on LSU, they finally (didn’t watch much film apparantly) realized our weakness was our o-line. I’m not bashing us or saying we are terrible….I’m just saying that we DO NOT hve a top-tier o-line yet. Therefore, we will be above average, but not ready for the big-boys yet. I think we need to concentrate and bring in and KEEP good talent up front. We manage for the most part to do it everywhere else……

Spent a couple of years in Colorado. When they think of the SEC they think of Florida, Alabama and maybe LSU. When you get out of the Southeast nobody knows the Bulldogs. Maybe if you won your conference more than once a decade you might be a little more relevant. Stewart Mandel is right on point. He also once wrote the Dawgs have the most delusional fan base when it comes to self-perception. Georgia thinks it’s a national power based off a glorious three year run back when Ronald Reagan was in office. Georgia is a GOOD program, not a national power.

What does it take to win against the big boys? It takes heart and courage from the players, and 60 minutes of aggressive, intelligent coaching. We do not get that from our coaches. The players deserve better. The alumni and fans deserve better. That’s why I am woofing. I deserve better. When Richt manages to get his team’s collective a** kicked for 60 minutes when Georgia plays Clemson next year, I will be ill for months. It’s on the horizon. I can hear it coming. I can smell it coming. Just a whiff of it makes me ill.
As for this year, my wounds have healed. I have again sent money to the fund. I have bought tickets. I am hopeful. But, hopeful don’t feed the bulldog. The bulldog has to be able to get up off that bag of ice, and bite somebody. The coaches like to dress up the bulldog in costumes, and be hopeful. That bulldog looks pitiful. Talk about hangdog !
Will somebody please offer Bobo a job. I will supplement his salary. Just to go away will I supplement his salary.

What is a national power ? Its not what UGA fans think it is. A national power is a team that has been in serious contention for the nat champ going into their bowl game over the past 20 years. That’s a pretty easy to achieve definition and it dosen’t fit UGA. So that is now settled for good.

I’m sorry but the guy who used Montana fans as an example is right. Georgia is not a nationally elite, recognized program. Its not just Montana its pretty much anywhere outside the sec. Ask people about elite programs in southern football and they think of Alabama, LSU, and Florida and FSU and Miami also even if they’ve both been down for a few years. The reason is 2 fold- one is championships. The other is that the above programs especially Bama, FSU, and Miami for decades have been playing big time intersectional games against programs like Oklahoma, Penn State, Ohio State, etc. People remember big time intersectional games when marquee names play each other. Georgia has never played any of these games. They’ve played some middling programs like Arizona State and OK State but those are programs that for the most part are middling teams like Georgia that have a great season once in a blue moon. For example ASU has had one great year and top 5 finish in the last 20 years, same with Ok. State. Other than this year Ok state has never amounted to poopy.

Tide rising, Other than Penn State he past 2 seasons what great regular season inter sectional games has bama scheduled since 1980? This Middling program since 1980 is 5-5 vs Bama , has won more SEC titles outright than Bama. Bama from 2000-2009 was 8th in the SEC in winning %.
Georgia is 3rd all time in bowl wins 6 th all time in bowl appearances and has finished in the top ten 6 times since 2002. Bama is nationally recognized but to insinuate Georgia isn’t is absurd.
What portion of bamas recognition comes from , NCAA sanctions, bowls ban , forfeits, vacated wins , tree killings?

For whatever reason, UGA has managed to avoid a fight with any of the top 2 or 3 teams in the nation for years. Until UGA can take down one of these teams it will continue to be nationally irrelevant. UGA should seek a 3 game series with Bama even if they have to play them in Bama every year.

Red Stick, good question…. in my opinion a record at least as good as last year (SECE champs) and if we dont win the SECCG, at least be more competitive for 4 quarters instead of 2 – then go win the bowl game. Given the talent we have on D and like you stated if our o-line can gell this is definitely attainable. Of course I would rather win it all, and that SHOULD be the goal.
Joey – Vandy has definitely gotten better under Franklin, but I just dont see him being there very long. If Vandy continues their recent level of play – bigger programs are going to be knocking on his door and I am not aware of anything that would drive him to want to stay at Vandy vs. taking a head gig at a more successful program.
So I guess thats a long way of saying I dont think we’ll have to worry about Franklin for very long.

THAT IS GOOD NEWS TO REST OF THE SEC SCHOOLS. A NICE MAN BUT AN AVERAGE COACH AT BEST. RICHT IS ONLY 24-16 HIS LAST THREE YEARS. HE IS 9-30 AGAINST RANKED TEAMS. GLAD UGA FANS ARE SATISFIED WITH HIM.

What must be done is to change the culture of the team that CMR has embraced in the past…he is making a great effort to do so, however the problem is the leftovers from the previous recruiting classes…it is a major embarrassment to the team, the school, the state, the parents, the administration, and the list goes on and one…until CMR gets rid of all the dud’s that are no than a major distraction year after year and season after season, he should be on the hot seat…he needs to recruit kids with character, rather than characters…4 members of the D-backfield will not be suiting up for multiple games (B. Smith, A, Ogletree, B. Rambo, & S. Commings)…what he should have done is pulled their scholarships and let CTG coach up some other players…until he turns into a Nick Saban, then this type of behavior will not stop….he needs to put the fear of God into that entire team, and if there is blowback then give a release to anyone who doesn’t want to buy into the system…clean house, set the tone for going forward, and start getting players in that will buy into a new system…sure, there may be a down year, but my gosh…sorry about the rant, but if CMR does not know how to handle his team, then he needs to go, and the board needs to CMR out of everyone’s misery

CMR recruits basically the same people that most other coaches in the SEC recruit. IC is a prime example. There were no indications prior to his sighing a LOI that he would turn out to be the worst violater ever at UGA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The guidelines/rules are already in place for CMR or any other UGA coach to go by when situations arise and must be followed when doling out discipline. UGA likely has the harshest rules/punishment of any school in the SEC or the nation for that matter. You never know for certain what you are getting when you sign a 16-17 year old until their college career starts to unfold. Even the non-athlete students, teachers, coaches and an occasional AD get into serious trouble as has been demonstrated to the max in recent years..

Michigan helmet was.

Georgia play 4 decent teams last year — but they won their other games.

I was in Chicago a couple years ago the weekend of the UGA – S.Car game. Went to Joe’s Sports Grill to watch the game, which is one of the biggest sports bars in the Windy City, and what was there much to my surprise? A massive group of Dawg fans and alumni. It was an official UGA bar. Yes, Georgia is a national brand. Deal with it.

@14 Titles
I swear I never had anything against Alabama until I started reading these AJC blogs. This is clearly a UGA blog and you Bama people have to come on here and spew your non-sense about your national titles (half of which are from random polls nobody has heard of in 40 years) and how loaded you are all the time. Nick Saban is a great coach, we get it, but before Nick came along you guys were the worst for a long time. I give you all the props in the world for your recent dominance, but pipe down. The most arrogant, obnoxious fan base in any American sport (Euro soccer fans take the cake.) I now wish Bama nothing but failure, and it wouldn’t be like that if it weren’t for the awful attitudes of your fans.
