Which game (besides South Carolina) will be Georgia’s toughest?

Marcus Lattimore is one of the reasons South Carolina looms as Georgia's toughest opponent in 2012. (Associated Press)

This time last year, I conducted what had become our annual survey to see which game you thought would be the toughest for the Dogs, other than the showdown in Jacksonville.

Because of the Florida game’s history over the previous couple of decades, I had decided to put it in a category all its own. It was, of course, the toughest game Georgia would face. The monkey on their back. The discussion was over which game was the next toughest.

But no longer. I think it’s fair to say there’s been a sea change in the SEC East over the past couple of years and, at least for now, I don’t believe the Florida game qualifies any longer as the automatic biggest hurdle on the Dawgs’ schedule.

Steve Spurrier’s Gamecocks have taken over that spot.

Consider: South Carolina, which last year was picked by 65 percent of Junkyard Blawg readers voting in the poll as the likely toughest game on the schedule aside from Florida, has won two in a row against Georgia, which beat Florida last year.

Yes, I know I said a few weeks ago that I consider the showdown with Florida a more important game than South Carolina, and that’s still the case. Because, let’s face it, the Dawgs can lose to the Gamecocks and still win the SEC East if they win the rest of their conference schedule (which admittedly is again easier than the Gamecocks’ schedule this year). Plus, winning two in a row in Jacksonville would pretty much park the “jinx” talk on the back shelf.

But we’re not talking most important game here, or the game you most want Georgia to win. We’re looking at which game will be the toughest for the Dawgs, and I don’t think there’s much argument there. Most college football observers are picking the Oct. 6 game in Columbia as the most likely loss in a Bulldog schedule that otherwise is deemed quite manageable.

The fact that many of those picking the Gamecocks to beat Georgia are also picking Georgia to win the SEC East again in spite of that drives Spurrier absolutely crazy.

Is this a great world, or what?

So, for the sake of this exercise at least, let’s stipulate that South Carolina is the toughest game on the schedule, thanks in large part to the Gamecocks’ perennially tough defense, the assumed presence of a healthy Marcus Lattimore in the lineup and the fact that Spurrier wants it practically more than life itself.

The Bulldogs certainly don’t want to lose a third consecutive year to South Carolina for the first time ever, but it wouldn’t derail their season.

So, let’s turn out attention to which game besides South Carolina looms as Georgia’s toughest challenge.

Is it the Gators, who are still going through their post-Urban renewal? You could make a good argument that because of the series’ history and the rivalry between the two programs (and the closeness of last year’s game thanks to Georgia’s awful special teams play) that the Jacksonville classic is the next toughest game on the 2012 schedule. Florida should be tough on defense, but at this point they’re still a big question mark offensively.

James Franklin could be a big challenge for a UGA defense missing several starters. (Associated Press)

James Franklin could be a big challenge for a UGA defense missing several starters. (Associated Press)

From what I’m hearing, though, more fans are concerned about the conference opener against Missouri. Not only will it be Mizzou’s SEC debut — which means they’re sure to be jacked for it — but Georgia is entering the game with an automatic handicap in having several defensive starters suspended. Plus the Dawgs will be going without last year’s SEC freshman of the year at tailback. Also, recent history shows Mark Richt’s teams have a tendency to get off to a slow start early in the season, especially on offense. And Tigers quarterback James Franklin probably will be the most dangerous two-way threat Associate Head Coach Todd Grantham’s defense will face all season.

As for the rest of the non-cupcake part of the schedule, there’ll probably be a bit more interest in the game with Vandy this year, thanks to the chippy nature of last year’s visit to Nashville, but it still would require a definitely subpar performance on the part of the Dawgs for the Commodores to win in Athens.

Which game (besides South Carolina) will be Georgia’s toughest this year?

Tennessee should have a potent passing attack and is likely to be more of a challenge than last year. Some even see this as the “trap” game for the Bulldogs this season, but Georgia still should be a comfortable favorite over Dooley Junior’s Vols.

Kentucky has been known to be surprisingly tough against the Dawgs in recent years, but on paper it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen this year.

Ole Miss? Still pretty much a disaster.

Auburn, of course, always has the potential to be a tough game, though the Tigers remain something of an unknown at this point.

And Georgia Tech and its tricky offense are always dangerous.

So how do I vote? I’m going with Missouri as the toughest game this season after South Carolina.

Hmmm, I’ll cheat and say two of em.

Florida for historic and pshycological reasons.

Auburn for the behind the scene stories and exact opposite reasons from Florida.

Ok, one more. I’m scared to death of Mizzou. I just feel like were going to drop an L in that one.

One thing is for sure: Georgia Tech will NOT be UGA’s toughest game.

Of the teams listed on the poll, I’d have to say Florida. Last time UGA beat UF twice in a row was 1988-89.

South Carolina game is all that matters.

If Rev. Richt gets beat by a team from a state that has a population less than metro Atl, 1 million less, for the 3rd straight year, he should be fired. We have tons more to offer a kid than USC, it’s the worst stadium and city in the SEC. Their facilities rank in bottom tier in football and their fan base is half the size of UGA’s. Would be like Bama or LSU getting beat 3 straight by Missy St. Of course their fan base would not accept that, ours likely will.

Florida and Auburn. Both defenses will be pretty stout which might put the game in the hands of our special teams…and we are depending on two true freshmen.

And for the record, I’m actually not that worried about South Carolina. We should of creamed them last year, they just won because of fluke turnover plays. Our offense and special teams gave them 28 points…thats just crazy. I think we handle them.

Florida IMHO is the toughest. They want to keep the upper hand as much as we want it back. Until we again make them our beeyotch they are in our head.

If CMR can keep The Old Bawl Sack out of his head we cruise past SC, no problem. Richt can’t out coach him but we can easily out play them.

Mizzou wants to do good but, they don’t have the horses. Franklin isn’t enough and the Defense is one they haven’t seen in the Big 12. Easy win in Mizzou even with a depleted squad. I’ll be at that game.

The Vols scare me. If Bray hadn’t gotten hurt last year, we come close to losing that one

Until we can beat Florida 2 years in a row( something we haven’t done since the Dooley era), they are our 1# nemisis. Richt has gotten a handle on the rest of UGA’s rivals( and he has been kicking the ever living dog crap out of Auburn lately for some reason). But Florida? Well except for that shelacking we gave them in 2007, we have not played well against this team, even when we win. I can deal with Florida beating us if they have the better team like they did in 2006 and 2008. But when the Gators are down, like they have been the last couple of years, we need to be winning our share. I to this day with NEVER forgive any of those losses to Ron Zook. We had the better team every single year, and we were 1-2 against him. All I’m saying is that when Florida is down we need to be sticking it to them like they would be sticking it to us if we were down.

Until we beat Florida 3 to 4 times in a row (not 2 in a row), or at least beat them something like 3 out of 5 years, or 4 out of 6 it will ALWAYS be Florida. We have allowed Florida to dominate us over the span of 20 something years which is by far the biggest disappointment in the history of Georgia football. Until we right that ship, Florida will always be our biggest and toughest rival.

Bill,
Please don’t ask us for our input and then you tell us what the answer should be. Sakerlina lost a lot of talent on defense, not to mention maybe the best defensive coordinator in the league. One could make a very strong case that Florida is Georgia’s toughest opponent, including this Bulldog.

Many BIG Dawgs around here are simply fed up with the fact that Richt can not get the team ready to go out of the chute. If you don’t think that the money men had a lot to do with Richt’s less than stellar contract, you had better think again. McGarity obviously was not going to come out bashing Richt this year, but he and ALL of the boosters that I know have not changed their minds about what is expected of this team. There is no way that a team like Mizzou, even with a great passing game, should stop Georgia with the across the board talent on the Dawgs roster. The Tigers do not have an SEC type running game, nor do they possess a defense any where near what the Dawgs will field. If the Dawgs lose this game, Richt’s seat will be hotter than it was pre 2011, and he knows it.

With all this being said, I do believe that we will see the return of the old Richt, the one that hardly ever lost on the road, and the Richt that actually liked to run the ball successfully. Nobody wants to talk about UGA’s receiving corps, which will be just as good as Mizzou’s. I do not think the Dawgs drop this one. Richt absolutely MUST entrench the “One game at a time” mentality in this current group of players much like he did in 2002.

I think Bobo has received advice from more than one respected football mind this offseason, and being the DGD that he is, will do everything he can to shed the current image that most have of him as OC. Murray’s continued maturing and a running game that has lacking will help his cause. I do think that the Dawg Nation will surprisingly pleased with the improvements this season. The defense will be way ahead of where it was early in 2011, and Mizzou ain’t Boise.

I’m tempted to say Mizzou because of our suspended secondary, but I still think our front 7 will be strong and fast enough to give Mizzou’s line all they can handle. I think we win that without too much issue. So, I chose Florida because of the importance. Like the article said, another win here would certainly move us away from the talk about how we can’t beat Florida and if we can dominate them in all 3 aspects, it will be a large step in showing our maturity.

Synergy. It is part of football. I don’t like the fact that Georgia refuses to hire a special teams coach. It makes me nuts. That said, it will be Missouri. Why, you may ask? Here’s why. Second game of the season. Georgia will not have been tested. Secondary in flux and missing key members. Special teams may come into play. BOOK THIS: If Mike Bobo has Aaron Murray throw the ball more than 25 times in this game, Georgia will lose. Georgia will need to focus on ball control, clock management, keeping the defense fresh, and avoid any type of shootout. Georgia can physically wear this team down, but if they start trying to chuck the ball all over the place and don’t use the clock, Missouri will make use of their talented wide receivers. This will be ALL on Bobo’s game plan in my opinion. 6 – 8 yard passes, keep moving the chains, run the ball, limit the number of plays the defense has to be on the field.

One huge drawback of the Conference expansion over the last few years is that the opportunity for UGA to play Clemson doesn’t come around too often, unless we meet in the Peach Bowl. (Chic-Fil-A can suck it. I still call it the peach Bowl.)

UGA / Clemson used to be a great rivalry. We should all do away with the “tune up games” against schools like the University of Northern South Dakota and fill in our non-conference schedules with teams that boost each others’ strength of schedule.

We get all of our D back and well primed! 2) By this time, Malcom Mitchell will be back on offense-with the other receivers getting plenty of reps, and he will be looking to make a big impact. 3) The D’s front 7 is the best we’ve had in a long time, with plenty of depth. This will be our best shot at controlling Lattimore, who will be forced outside. 4) Our O-line might be a bit better than a lot of folks think! Coach Friend did a nice patchwork job last year. With Theus coming in, this just might be protection Murray needs. 5) INTRODUCING CHRISTIAN LEMAY !! People, watch out for this kid to come in with some lightning! You’ll see him more and more as the year goes..By the time we play Carolina, he will develope into a difference-maker…and finally..6) Carolina lost some really good players that made a bunch of plays last year, especially on Special Teams and Offense…aaaand..with LSU coming a week later, they might get caught looking ahead!

LOL Also, I do think Murray is too short…I’d love to be proven wrong on this, but I doubt we’ll see him in the league!

I don’t believe murray is even the best qb at UGA.

After the mistakes against LSU and MSU to end the season, does anyone really think that the other coaches in the league wouldn’t have re-opened the qb competition in the spring???

richt is loyal to a fault……and that’s the main reason a lot of you guys are expecting a 3 or 4 loss season this year. if richt coached w/out caring about the emotions of his players and embarassing them for taking away starting positions…..UGA could easily compete w/ the LSUs and Alabamas this coming season.

I’m looking at Special Teams.
Paul Johnson went out and got a full time Special teams coach.
Vandy blocked a punt, and returned a kick for a td on special teams.
Florida had 3 50+ yard kick returns on us.
Tenn went out and got an NFL guy to head their Special Teams full time.
Spurrier has the Special Teams coach of the year.

As far as defenses:
we face 8 teams that finished in the top 30 in pass defense last year.
we also face Van Gorder at Auburn.
we face Muschamp at UF.

Offenses:
Mizzou
Tenn
Auburn
Tech
South Carolina laid up 45 points on us.

Potential losses are:
Mizzou, Tenn, Vand, SC, UF, Aub, GaTech

Toughest will be Florida of course (18-3 record vs UGA), then Georgia Tech because of improved defense, great running game, and new special teams coach.

We will lose at least 3 games, simply due to special teams.

I hear all this worry about Mizzou and our secondary but is anyone mentioning the absolute horror that was the mizzuo O-line again a good pass rush last year?!?!?! We will be rushing Jarvis jones and Corn at them all day and that QB can only be effective if Jarvis’s helmet isnt firmly planted into his chest down after down.

PREDICTION: Our d-line forces franklin into bad throws which in turn makes our scrappy secondary look better and gain much need confidence. Murray owns offense early but then Boo secures the game with 4 yard run after 4 yard run. UGA 28 Mizzou 17

For those of you who say UGA gave SC last years game, listen to this- Late in the 4th qtr and UGA up by 4, Sc had to have a td to get the lead and we drove the ball down the field (lattimore, etc…) to get the td we had to have. Up by 3 after td and then MURRAY gave us the easy td. When we had to have it we took it. that is how it went down.

SC game is a loss, you are correct Bill…but ones to look out for are Mizzou and another is the UT game the week before the trip to SC because though UT has many problems their one strenght is Bray and passing game vs the UGA secondary which is going to have very few reps together going into that game and UGA looking past a week. Look for this one to be a huge shootout and with Murray propensity to turn the ball over do not be surprised.

And a note to the Clemson fan, you must be lost as the board for the Ga High School league is elsewhere, this is a board for MAJOR COLLEGE football. Opps…that Big East team just scored again. .

I think the two toughest (minus SCAR) will be Florida, for obvious reasons, and Missouri. We don’t have any experience playing Mizzou, we’ll be missing our starting secondary for the most part, and we’re still figuring out our offensive pieces and how to shuffle them according to the situation. We also traditionally suck at the beginning of the season. We just need to figure out how to cover the pass and we’ll be fine, but that’s a lot easier said than done.

I don’t think Auburn will be that difficult this year, mainly because they’re bringing in new coordinators. It takes time to adjust as we’ve seen.

I am actually really excited about the Vanderbilt game this year. Can’t wait to see the pay back we’re going to dish out on James Franklin and his arrogant mouth. Ah and my last Tech game as an undergrad. Time flies.

Red Dawg 77, I hope you’re right about the road team stuff, but I’ll believe it when I see it. And, the Bulldogs WILL get tested on the road early on – Mizzou. They will throw everything but the kitchen sink at us to win their historic, first SEC game, and while I trust Grantham, he will be short-handed with experienced DBs, and overall depth. Not to mention, Richt/Bobo have proven for a while they can’t adjust in-game, and Richt coaches more to “not lose,” than to WIN.

I will say this, if Richt coaches every game as he did vs Auburn last season, we will have a good year. But he didn’t even coach the final 2 games last season in the manner he did vs Auburn, so that’s probably a moot point . . .

Given the fact we have suspensions already, transfers, and felony charges to our star player who is now gone….nothing much been done with the OL, the OC position still questionable…..I say we go 9-3 at best. I’d have to say Missouri. They’re a bit of an un known to most of us UGA fans compared to the other teams we see regularly. It’s early in the new season, which often means turnovers, missed assignments, and mistakes. The Dogs will also be playing without some key starters (bone heads!) that we need for that game, and I’m sure Missouri wants to prove they can play against the big boys in the SEC. I’m just uneasy about that game. Like the fact that the SC game has been moved back a bit. Hopefully that will help. That is surely the toughest game on the schedule.

I just have to last at all the delusional UGA homers still crying about “giving away” games.

Well, silly people, here is the TRUTH….the players and team who turned the ball over vs SC\LSU\MichState ARE YOUR TEAM so they are back again this year.

How stupid and lame is your argument when you have go about talking about “spotting” teams points as if it was your sorry players\team who contributed to those turnovers and guess what you still have those crappy players to return for another go around.

History would tell us that it looks pretty ugly for UGA in Columbia for the SC game as your crappy players were turned over for 21 pts at HOME and now those same crappy players have to go away to SC where UGA averages about 9 pts a game for the past decade. Just how many more turnovers will UGA have in Columbia? SC by 10.

UGA won’t be playing LSU this season but the same goes against the best defense returning in the SEC, they are only bigger and stronger so how many more than 44 would UGA give this time?

Still say watch out for Mizzou\UT\UF.

The more I think about it all the games will be tough. With Richt,Bobo, & Murray at the helm, they are capable of keeping any team in a game.

As I read more and more about our off field issues and suspensions, I am getting worried about this Mizzou games for a number of reasons. This will be their first SEC game, they are going to come out wanting to prove that they belong, plus it is at their home. Then over the last couple of seasons the Dawgs do not start off that great, with this game being in early September I fear they could get us. I am hoping CMR road record and they guys playing like champions will get us the win, GO DAWGS!!

My precious baby boy Isaiah, bless his little heart, should be at UGA helping his team instead of wasting his valuable time at that no-name school in Bama. I don’t know what happened to him, he was always such a good boy, at least until that horrible Coach Richt corrupted him.

Please fire Coach Richt so I can send my boy back to Athens to lead his beloved Dawgs on to victory!

45 points? Whew! Easy on the Wild Turkey, Red – though, I guess it’s 5:00 somewhere!

SC’s offense scored 24 points on our D last season, 17 if you don’t count that 4 yd drive. Our O scored every one of our 42 points.

You want to re-calculate? If not, better get those fake punts and reverse KO returns ready . . .

I am 100% with all the people who say Florida. The Dawgs have won back to back games against the Gators since ‘88 and ‘89, so this is the big game. This is toughest for purely psychological reasons.

No, Fla Dawg, why would I take issue with you guessing that we might lose to one of the (MO, TN, SC) games? That’s basically the best guess from about million other people.

And if you are wrong and they don’t, I certainly have no bragging rights. IN fact I don’t disagree. Its very possible. And I’d be pleasantly surprised if not. I do probably do put the % of will win all those, higher than you

When I give/gave you grief about predictions, you were picking the Dawgs to lose, blatently hoping in some cases, pretty much every week last year, then completely diminishing the victory when that didn’t happen.

Really?

kerryb,

You think we had a pretty good season last year? Two opening season losses against a good team and a mediocre team followed by 10 wins against absolute nothing teams ended by two losses by good teams.

The team / coaching did not improve during the season by any measure that I can think of.
It’s fans like you that accept mediocrity and keep this program down. Go an puke all you want. Wallow in mediocrity and puke.

It was the demonstrative outcry by fans like me that helped unload Martinez and get Grantham. That resulted in the only improved team play area I know of – Defense.

By the way, I think Aaron Murray is a heck of a good QB. I think our O Line couldn’t block an Easter Parade Bunny Rabbit and our running backs fall at the first touch.

But if calling it the way I see it means it makes you puke then at least I have the satisfaction of knowing you puked.

Did our defense really play that well? Yes against the Mickey Mouse teams and the celller dwellars of the sec west. Against Boisewith hands on hip midway throught the 2nd qtr. LSU opened a can of W A in the 2nd half of the SECCG. Michigan State was visions of Willie when they tied us to go into OT and eventually winning the game. So… did our defense really play that well Sheeple?

Eleanor,

Yep, the LSU Game was an absolute blowout. But despite the woeful lack of Offense the D kept us in the game in the first half. Time after time they absolutely shutdown LSU. In fact they set an SECC Game record by shutting out a team for an entire first half.

If you watched closely though you saw the D getting tired just before halftime. I knew then that if the O couldn’t begin to control the game in the third period that we’d end up losing.

Give the D some credit for trying their best in that one anyway. Now about the Michigan State Game!? Ya got me there.

If you’re asking about the nonconference schedule, yes, that is put together by the athletic department. And it’s pretty typical of the type of nonconference schedule that many SEC teams play. If you’re talking about the SEC schedule, that’s done in BIRMINGHAM. So figure that one out if you don’t believe it’s a rotating thing.

Seems to me everybody forgets malcom Mitchell was one the top CB in highschool . Matter of fact he’s a Cb naturally that was converted to a WR. How mnay games do we play? 11? All 11 will be the toughest games. UGA has to suit up very game and go out and play focused and hard nosed and mistake free. Aaron Murray has got to act like a 4th year Junior QB and play mistake free ball or we end up around 8-3 and CMR will be gone. UGA at 9-2 will possibly have CMR BACK and barely hanging on to his job.

ALL 11 games will be tough.

Yes – Everyone in the country knows that we have a very easy schedule this season except for a few fans in this state. We should win a nc this season but felt that way last season.

Here’s a thought. Which team on our schedule can beat Alabama, LSU, OU, USC Troj or Oregon? I don’t think neither.
