Fan talk: Bashing Cornelius Washington, roster attrition and more!

2012 uga media guideLike many of you I had some time off this week, but let’s get back in gear with a look at the cover of this year’s UGA football media guide, which is now available for perusing online. And if you’re one of those folks who still want a printed hard copy, you can order one from the Georgia Athletic Association. Just send a check for $18 to: UGA Media Guide, P.O. Box 1472, Athens, GA 30603-1472.

Now, let’s get to some Junkyard Mail. …

Terry Perkins writes: Bill, did you see Cornelius Washington’s comments on Facebook bashing the UGA fans who were criticizing Isaiah Crowell after his arrest? I couldn’t believe his disrespectful attitude toward the fans any more than I could his blind support of his former teammate, the accused felon. Do you think Washington is typical of the sort of players Mark Richt has brought to Athens, and if so does that at all disturb you?

Terry is referring to Washington’s Facebook post in which he said fans “think you know so much, but in reality you know nothing” about the players and their struggles. He said, “99% of you don’t give a crap about us outside of football. When we’re doing well you’re all in our faces, when things get tough and we need encouragement you’re nowhere to be found. You’re fake and I despise you for it. We shall band together guys, we’ve been working hard and we only need each other. NONE of those outsiders will contribute to our survival as a team or as individuals, you can guarantee that.”

Predictably, the reaction among fans on various social media sites was rather critical of Washington, with many echoing the rather heated sentiments that fan Bobby Nettles of East Atlanta posted on his Facebook page. In extremely blunt language, Nettles noted, among other things, that UGA football players have many advantages that fans never had and  advised Washington and his teammages that “Your little boy brains need to catch up to your full grown man bodies … You’re blessed with health, superior athletic ability, and keen minds … every advantage possible. Free school, a huge support system, the adulation of fans everywhere … and somehow, we just don’t understand?”

Before we use one ill-considered Facebook post as an indictment of UGA players in general and Washington in particular, let’s keep in mind we’re talking about something posted by a college student who was reacting in anger to what he perceived as unfair criticism of a teammate. It’s one of the dangers of today’s “instant” communication that a tweet or FB posting or email is sent before you’ve had a chance to think it over.

Fortunately, after doing so Washington has apologized. In a recent Facebook post, he addresses the “Dawg Nation” and says, “I am at fault because no matter how I felt I should never have let those feeling[s] get control of my better judgment. I should have kept it to myself and let the entire situation die down. My biggest regret about the whole thing is that it has cause[d] so much disruption amongst the team. I forgot for a minute that I am here to get an education and play football and that pretty much is the extent of my responsibilities. I am not here to complain about the fanatics and for that I do apologize. I am a leader and I care about the guys that I lead. Believe me, I do know and understand that my teammate made a very bad decision and had to face the consequences, but I[‘d] rather support him than be negative toward him. I[‘d] rather help him succeed because I saw all the work that he had put in since spring and I was looking forward to seeing him play! The bottom line is that he has moved on and I’m happy he has found a place to continue his career, but the best thing for UGA football is to let this go and move forward positively. I would like to ask all the fans and supporters out there to help us with this by letting it go also. We have to continue to work hard and do our very best to get to Miami like we planned and I want all of you along for the ride.”

In the wake of that post, Nettles has responded in kind on his Facebook page: “In the face of scathing criticism from myself and others the young man stood tall and took responsibility. If you liked my rant pertaining to Mr. Washington, you should LOVE this. Well done young man, and I apologize if my rant got a little bugged eyed nutty.I hope you have a great season and I’ll be barking with the rest of the pack …”

Mark Richt's roster is getting alarmingly thin. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Mark Richt's roster is getting alarmingly thin. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Dr. Dawg write: Bill, I’m really alarmed at the roster attrition that’s decimating our football team! We were already way below the limit of 85 players on scholarship, and now we hear that in addition to Cootie Harrow not making grades, Brandon Burrows is transferring in order to get more playing time in a defense more suited to him and we have another player waiting to hear from the NCAA clearinghouse. Plus, of course, the guys suspended for the early games. And who knows what sort of injuries will hit once camp starts in August. I’m concerned we’re going to wind up playing walk-ons a lot more than ought to be the case with a team contending for the conference championship. Are you as worried as I am?

Yes, I am. It appears with the recent departures that UGA’s roster has dipped below 70 scholarship players, not counting the walk-ons awarded battlefield promotions. To put that into rather alarming perspective, that’s less than the scholarship limits imposed on Southern Cal as part of its NCAA probation! While the reasons for the many departures from the program have varied from academics and arrests to injury problems, disagreements with the coaching staff and frustration over lack of playing time — making it difficult to identify an underlying cause — there’s no denying that the trend is disturbing. And once full-contact drills start, Mark Richt might find it difficult to field the sort of two-deep roster he’d like to have. In the past, similar problems saw Richt cut back on contact in practice, only to regret it later when his players got pushed around a bit by opponents. So that problem could rear its head again. And while most fans have applauded Richt’s determination to have starters playing special teams, that’s also likely to increase the chance of injuries and make the lack of quality depth a factor. The UGA staff has indicated they might sign as many as 30 players in the next class to try and bolster the team’s ranks, and increasingly that looks like something they’re absolutely going to have to do.

Josh Cuevas writes: Bill, Now that the Isaiah Crowell situation has had a chance to sink in, how about an objective post mortem on his time at UGA? … I remember few athletes who came to Athens with such immense expectations and then actually showed themselves to be worthy, athletically, of the accolades as true freshmen. Yet by the time the news broke last week of Crowell’s arrest, very few Bulldog fans, justifiably, thought twice about showing him the door. With the flashes of brilliance juxtaposed against the suspensions, the time he took himself to the sidelines when he was needed on the field, and ultimately the arrest, it’s a strange and sad end to what was once unlimited potential. I hope the young man can do something productive with his life, but his story, in retrospect, will likely go down as one of the sadder cases in the annuls of Georgia football.

That’s a fact, Josh. During those brief times last season when Crowell was completely healthy and stayed in the game, he looked like a definite game-breaker. Unfortunately, he appeared to lack the toughness that is an essential for long-term success as an SEC back. Whether he could have developed that this season, we’ll never know. At least we can fully understand now why UGA continued to recruit five- and four-star backs even after having Crowell named the AP’s SEC freshman of the year.

Jonathan Brian Perren writes: Bill, I wanted to ask with the upcoming playoff and selection committee choosing the 4 teams for 2014 what do you think the number of universities will be that will try to beef up their nonconference schedules against weaker teams from a BCS conference to try to take schools from the FCS schools like the SEC likes to do out of their schedules? To me it looks a lot better to play a weaker team from a BCS conference in the PAC 12 such as Oregon State or Cal, Big 12 (Kansas or Iowa State), and Big East (San Diego State or Temple) or even an independent like BYU than to have a Buffalo, Florida Atlantic, or Georgia Southern on the schedule. I know Clemson is going to be on the schedule in the future but my understanding is that it will be every 6 years not a yearly game. What is your take and how many AD’s do you see trying to schedule this way to please a playoff selection committee beyond 2014?

If strength of schedule really does become a determining factor in the playoff, I think you’ll definitely see a turnabout in scheduling philosophy, and Greg McGarity has indicated he’s holding off on future scheduling right now until he can see how this works out. Does Georgia need to play the sort of killer schedule that it had in 2009? No. But having a Clemson or kickoff classic type opponent on the schedule, say, every other year isn’t too much to expect. And, yes, I think you’re likely to see fewer FCS teams taking those cupcake spots and more teams from the likes of the Sun Belt and MAC conferences. Of course, Georgia Southern and other FCS schools are talking about moving up to the top division, so they still might show up on SEC schedules.

Phillip Joiner writes: Bill, The following are the running backs coaches of the Mark Richt era, the players they had under their purview who contributed,  and their on and off the field performance:

Tony Pierce (2001-2002): Verron Haynes , Mike Gilliam, Musa Smith, Michael Cooper, Tony Milton, J.T. Wall, Ronnie Powell. Wall and Haynes got shots in the NFL and Smith became a 1,000-yard-plus back.

Ken Rucker (2003-2004): Cooper, Gilliam, Milton, Powell along with Tyson Browning, Kregg Lumpkin, Danny Ware, Brannan Southerland and Thomas Brown. Browning was used well as a scatback and returner, while Ware, Lumpkin and Brown all made NFL rosters

Kirby Smart (2005): Smart continued to develop the careers of Lumpkin, Ware and Brown.

Tony Ball (2006-2008): Coached Lumpkin, Ware, Brown and Southerland as well as Fred Munzenmaier, Shaun Chapas, Knowshon Moreno, coached the first few uneventful years of Richard Samuel, Caleb King and Carlton Thomas.

Bryan McClendon (2009-present): Samuel is switched to linebacker. King is dismissed from team. Washaun Ealey is dismissed from team. Thomas leaves team. Isaiah Crowell is dismissed from team. Ken Malcome gets suspended, quits team, comes back to team.

Busts like Albert Hollis (who never contributed) and players who didn’t pan out like Dontavious Jackson are not included in the above compilation. There seems to be an obvious and shockingly alarming rate of failures under the watch of Bryan McClendon. Does this not merit a closer look by the head coach and athletic director? Thanks Bill! I’m 35 years old, and the Buffalo game will be my 125th as a Dawg in attendance!

When you’re talking about individual cases, whether it’s Ealey or King or Crowell, it’s tough to pin the blame for their failings on their coach, as I noted last week. But when you look at the overall situation with running backs over the past three seasons, it does seem fair to ask whether perhaps McClendon’s value to the program as a recruiter is overshadowing his lack of success as a position coach. It’s a discussion that probably needs to be taking place at Butts-Mehre.

First? I took time to read the article. Anyway, Hollis was no bust. He’s a DGD who suffered a terrible injury. One of my favorite moments in Sanford is when he finally got to take the field.

Well done. Hurt feelings, everyone vented, apologized and it really is time to move on. I respect CR for facing up to the criticism and responding like a man. Same for the fan who wrote it. It’s high time this football team and its fans get some positive juice flowing and cut all the rest of the crap. Hopefully this is the start of a very special season.

Glad to see C. Washington take responsibility for his remarks. Fans do need to understand that some of these kids did have rough lives before they EARNED their opportunity to play for UGA. While they have been blessed with a tremendous opportunity and privilege, it is difficult to shut out what you have known your entire life. That being said, these kids must learn to become men on an accelerated time table. If they make poor decisions, they must learn from them quickly, and mistakes cannot be made repeatedly. Athens is not Columbia, SC…out players do not have that luxury…I would know, live long Dawg fan, but USCe alumni. Go Dawgs!

The attrition issue could be HUGE. Hopefully we’ll stay healthy. The Washington mess just proves that people (players and fans) say stupid things online.

Washington’s apology makes it clear that he is apologizing for saying what he thinks, not for what he believes. I’m sure he isn’t alone on the team in believing that the UGA program begins and ends with the group of players who wear the jersey today and that no one outside of the guys on the field has ever contributed anything to the success of the UGA program. Most of that attitude can be attributed to backgrounds of many of the players, the attitude of teenagers today, and individual ignorance.

Whatever the case, I’m really starting to wonder why I waste my time and money supporting a bunch of guys like Washington, Crowell, King, Ealey, etc., etc,,,,,

I’m behind on my Dawg news apparently, as I had not heard of these comments by CW. I’m sorry, and I’m a diehard Dawg fan, but I can completely understand his comments and I am not angry at all. One comment of his in particular really rang true to me: ““99% of you don’t give a crap about us outside of football.” He is absolutely correct. We all criticize their play, their decisions, their comments, their academics, but we don’t care if they are happy as long as they are winning.

It comes down to being understanding and supportive of them not just as players, but as human beings. I was the first one to blast IC for being stupid, but maybe I’m being hypocritical. In any case, I agree with CW also when he says we need to put this behind us. Let’s all move on.

IC needed a blast for his stupidity. CW is well within his right to declare his beliefs and the way he felt. He does however need to put his big boy pannies on. There’s much more room outside the UGA program than in it. C’mon CW, you are elite, you chose to play football at UGA and you chose to open your big mouth. The fans on the net are fickle and most aren’t even fans. Quit giving them more ammo

This crap about all the tweets, Facebook and the rest of this instant (anti) social media is in my mind the culprit in the process. All of us have beliefs and feelings about stuff, the problems start when somebody decides to share it – annonymous or not – and it goes viral. I will say to young Mr Washington, if you truly believe you’re a leader on this team then how in hell did you and the other leaders not straighten young Mr Crowell out – particularly since he seemed to have built himself a posse among some of these freshmen. It’s been an open story – and if I’ve heard it over and over then it’s out there – that Crowell and his buds have continued to smoke weed regularly and apparently haven’t been too worried about hiding it. Leaders would let these kids know how you’re supposed to behave and deport yourself…unless, of course, you’re all doin it cause it’s a release from all your ’struggles’. C’mon son, if you’re a leader, lead…and I don’t mean takin em to the quick shop to buy ‘blunts’.

The reason Washington’s remark was out of line and inappropriate was because that was three strikes against Crowell. Mark Richt will give any of his players more than enough time to learn from their mistakes but he expects them not to repeat the same mistake. But certain offenses are considered so bad that they do not get a second chance. Crowell getting caught with a gun on UGA property is an automatic dismissal. A few years ago when Mettenberger exposed a waitresses breast and may have even touched them , that may not be in the UGA handbook as an automatic dismissal but that kind of behavior can not be overlooked.
The alumni who have daughters can not forgive a sexual deviant like that. A lot of money must have changed hands to have kept Mettenberger out of prison with a felony conviction. We will suffer with him at LSU because I think he is a better QB than Murray but Mark Richt and everybody else in authority at Georgia couldn’t overlook what he did.
As a father I keep reminding all three of my kids that it only takes 1 real stupid act to change their destiny forever. These kids have got to take some responsibility on their own. Truth be know the kids that really do the bad stuff just haven’t been caught before or they were lucky or they always were bailed out by their parents and were not made to suffer any consequent’s.
The upsetting thing about Washington’s remark is he was made to say that , it’s not what he believes.

You will never make everyone happy in anything you do in life. Do what you know to be right and you wll be successful and happy with yourself. You have to disreguard what others say when they may not know the truth. You were wrong about most fans not caring. I think most are great fans who care about you and every member of the team. To say that Albert Hollis was a bust is wrong. His injury was devistating. I may be wrong but did he not graduate after being on the team for five years? How many of those mentioned graduated. The biggest mistake in recent years by the coaching staff was what they have done to Richard Samuel. His career has been a coaching mistake and not McClendon.

Cornelius i applaud your support of your teammate, your brother, your friend. don’t listen to these haters. you came clean and got some peace by apologizing and thats good for your head but never doubt your gut reaction. while it might be jumping the gun (no pun intended), defending your former teammate is the only reaction a man should have when he sees his friend in trouble. can any of you reading this object? and to C Washington and to the rest of the crew: wipe all of this BS out of your frame of vision and WORK. A small note- Your referral to the 2009 schedule being so tough- I am guessing that you are referring to playing at Oklahoma State. That really was not THAT tough of a game. We just sucked that year plain and simple. We lost to Kentucky at home that year for crying out loud. We have had SEVERAL teams under Richt who go out there and win that game easily. We didn’t “overschedule” that game; we under recruited for it.

Well dawggirl, I respectfully disagree. Most fans that I know care greatly about the players and who they are as human beings. This may sound like bull, but I used to run with Herschel from time to time up and down Gaines School Road when I was at UGA. He had a condo just inside Cedar Creek and he was just a regular guy. It was never planned, sometimes we just ended up running together. We talked about all kinds of things during our runs, and I cherish the moments I had with him. He needed a jump to his black trans am once and I was happy to help him out. Most fans I know would give a player the shirt off their back, a wonderful meal, a place to stay, a warm home during the holidays — you get the point. I’ve especially enjoyed reading Christian Robinson’s blog during his trip to Italy, as well as his experiences playing high school ball and being recruited by UGA. He’s a smart kid with a great future, and a wonderful role model of a true student athlete. My 12 year old reads all his blogs and I’m glad he does. That’s what it’s all about. I get what Cornelius was saying, because the pressure must be unreal. But the majority of UGA fans really want to see these guys succeed everywhere, and honestly, it hurts to see it thrown away with guys like Isiah Crowell. And fairly, or unfairly, it reflects on the University, coach Richt and the AD. I worked my way through UGA cleaning fish at Wilfong’s, the local seafood distributor. So I know where guys like Bobby Nettles are coming from.

CW is right. Just read some of the posts on the AJC. They bash players and coaches and 90% of those fans have never played football and don’t know bean crap about the game. UGa fans have become a bunch of cry babies and whiners because Richt hasn’t won a MNC, never mind the fact that he won two SEC championships, the first in twenty years. So suck it fans, don’t let the street car run over you when you bail on the Dawgs.

if i remember correctly Washington made some comments about the UGA game after the 0-2 start last season also. I really don’t care though, Cornelius Wash wears the Red & Black and was defending a former teammate, a brother in arms if you will. If your friend was being attacked my thousands of people, would you defend them?

Wash had every right to do what he did, and probably only appologized because a coach made him do it. He was standing up for his friend and i totally respect that.

Washington wants to throw a lot of the fans under the bus for the same reaction that Crowell got from Bobo, McClendon ,Mark Richt and McGarity. If you are caught with a gun on school property you will be dismissed as a student at UGA. It is automatic. How can anyone condone this type behavior unless the rules of the hood overrides the rules and laws of our nation, state and University. Thus , our problem. In this case I guess Crowell was so use to carrying a gun where he lived and at his high school that it didn’t dawn on him the you couldn’t carry a gun anywhere at any times. I’m sure it amazed him when he found out you could not have a gun on school property at UGA.
Washington taking up for his friend in this case shows how immature and ignorant he is. Just think if 35,000 students at the University of Georgia could carry a gun I wonder how many killings we would have every year. I think Washington and his teammates that really support Crowell’s action should get a permit and demonstrate in protest in front of the Athletic building until they get the right to carry a gun.

I am glad that washington apologized, but what did he really apologize for? The main thing I read that he apologized for is expressing his feelings, it appears he still believes the fans have nothing to do with the team and their success. I would like to see an old coach, maybe tereshinski, have a long talk with him about what the school was like before it could afford all the things it has now and maybe grantham talk about how much the fans and crowd noise help the defense.

As far as the scholarships goes, this is more then a problem that can be or should be fixed in one year. You don’t want to sign too many players in one class because then in four year when they graduate you have to sign that many again. Of course with the attritition at UGA that might not be that big of a deal. Anyways, I would like to see 3-5 JUCO players sign this year, players that should be able to contribute immediately and it will offset that one big graduating class that would come in a few years. Also, as far as special teams, I’m not sold on the idea of a bunch of starters out there. You should be able to use scholarship backups, special teams isn’t that hard, you just need to coach them up better.

Finally, as far as mcclendon goes I heard this last year. It is something to think about. From what I have read he is one of the best recruiters, which means he tells the players what they want to hear. I wonder what kind of relationship he has with his backs, is it coach-player or a true friend-player. There is a fine line, you don’t want to be two faced, but you kind of have to be to an extent. Richt needs to let mcclendon know that this behavior is his little group, we’re talking 5 backs or so at a time, is inexcusable. And that going down the road, more of these issues will be put on him as well and there will be consequences.

Great comments and I agree. Also, since I paid a small portion of IC’s expenses through UGa donations, State taxes, ticket purchases, etc. I have a right to expect a little maturity and effort in return. All of his mistakes in less than 1 year at UGa are a slap in the face to the thousands of us who gave him the great opportunity to play between the hedges. The show of disrespect toward CMR last year when IC turned away from his coach during a game (on TV) was stunning to me. I appreciate CW’s love for a teammate, but he is way off base when he implies that the vast majority of us fans don’t care about the players outside of football. CW needs to understand that many of us do care, but we expect a little more respect from the players since we are the ones giving you the opportunity to play the game you love and get a free education to boot. Now go out and play your best and have a great season…….and a great life after football. GO DAWGS!!!

Sun Tan Avenger, you have every right to believe in Mark Richt because of his two SEC Titles. I have the right to not believe, any more. Since that last Title, we lose games we shouldn’t, and get our rear-ends handed to us every time we play a really good team. Have you even considered we have lost two in a row to South Carolina? We’ve lost two bowl games in a row – one to Central Florida? B-B-B-Boise St? Good grief.

And don’t even get me started on our roster management, law-breaking and rule-breaking by players, etc.

You go right on kissing that well-tanned hind-end of the CEO of this mess.

Hey, Joey, chew on this for a while…

1. Four different SEC teams have won the last six BCS championships.

2. UGA was not one of those teams.

3. During that period, UGA did not win the SEC championship.

4. Red panties.

In other words, UGA has sunk into total irrelevancy both regionally and nationally.

So why is UGA paying Mark Richt millions of dollars a year?

CW was 100% correct. Most fans could care less about these players past football. Especially the ones who think “these poor little black boys were saved from the ghetto and lives of extreme poverty”. By the overwhelming generosity that uga fans donations have provided. The fact is your support does not entitle you to criticize at will. I point to CMR’s staff for the factor that UGA is very undermanned: From Dave VanHalenger, Director of Player Welfare, who has does very little to merit his position…..to Joe Tereshinski, S&C Director, who does not have the credentials to have his position…..to Rodney Garner, Recruiting Coordinator, who has understaffed UGA’s roster thru the lack of kids signing LOI’s……to Mike Bobo, Offensive Coordinator, with the lack of innovative play calling has cost UGA games thus better seasons to impress recruits…..it is a known fact that a lot of the staffs in the SEC are outworking UGA’s staff in many areas….UGA should be a Top 10 program every year with the in-state talent, facilities, fan base, and history…..fans complain because they know it should be better!! Agree that all this attrition will have a terrible impact on GA’s chances of winning the SEC or the east for that matter. Just too many guys leaving for one reason or another and missing games due to suspensions and unforseen injuries. It’s happened before and seems there’s no end to it. Then toss in losing games for whatever reason and you finally have to say enough is enough. As much as I like our HC, he’s not going to get this team to the pinnicles of success no matter who he recruits or hires as coaches. No matter how many games he wins each season he manages to lose the most critical games that lead to championships and some embarrassing losses along the way to lesser teams. When his time is over as HC he’ll go down in GA history as one of the winningest coaches GA has had but IMO I doubt he’ll have a NC banner to hang in Sanford stadium. Would rather see another guy come in and try to change the culture of this team from what its sunk to over the last several years.

Bill,
I was criticized way back for predicting I.C.’s situation. Mistakes, especially freshman mistakes are made. But, all appearances are that the foundation was not there. There was concern about his character (or lack there-of) prior to him getting here. His chest-thumping over gains on lesser teams, his quickness to exit after a decent hit, and his lack of respect for teammates and coaches all shined brightly. I wish him well, but he has an extremely long way to go……………..

Ealey, King, and Thomas were not “dismissed” from the team. King failed to qualify academically, and Thomas and Ealey both asked to be transferred, because they were the leading rushers, but didn’t like being rotated with far less effective running backs, understandably so. Entitlement among running backs, and QB too, has been a dry rot for Mark Richt as he tends to start his favorites ove better producers.

If Corn Washington’s biggest issue is his loyalty to his teammates, I can live with that. That will take him far in a team sport.

First, I really hate that someone called Albert Hollis a bust. No, he did not get a chance at fame and glory on the football field. He suffered a grotesque knee injury in practice and he never recovered from it. He did run track at UGA and he graduated with a degree in business (I believe). Last I heard, he was modeling for Calvin Klein and other’s so, he isn’t exactly sitting around doing nothing with himself. Sometimes, we do have players who have to make a life away from the football field.
Second, Although I liked Bryan McClendon as a dawg, I’m not sure he is the correct person to be coaching our running backs. Now, either it was the type of player we recruited (who among us did not hear bad things about King and Crowell before we signed them?) or the players do not respect McClendon. Right now, it looks like the majority of them do not respect him. I am hoping that with the new guys we have signed, that will change. I still do not think that McClendon can pull it together. I heard he is an excellent recruiter. Maybe his future lies in that route instead.

To C Washington’s defense, BEFORE Crowell got kicked off the team, no blogs were saying the team would be better off WITHOUT HIM. But after he was dismissed, they all tried to spin it that way, showing how disingenuous they really are. I dismissed all those type of articles due to glaring concerns about their lack of sincerity. When Mettenberger and Ealey left, fans said they saw it coming, and the team was better off now, and you’re not better off losing your two best players like that. I defended Mettenberger and Ealey before they transferred, and after, because the team was not better off without them, as LSU proved, and as Ealey went on to rush for over 1000 yards the year after he left UGA.

If you read CW’s apology(?) you will see that he is not apologizing for the way he feels, only that he said it openly. He really does feel that the fans don’t care about the players beyond the football field and to an extent, he is correct. Georgia is a pretty big state and I don’t think you can expect people to know about each player, his background or his home life.
What fans do have a right to expect is better behavior from some of these kids that come to the state university and do some of the things they do. Yes, they will be under the microscope and every misdeed they do does get magnified to a large extent. However, one would hope that if the young man or woman was able to get into college, he would realize this and show some maturity before doing some of the stuff they do. They are not ordinary students in the sense that they are always in the spot light. I wonder how many cars stopped that night resulted in tickets, for some violation or another, that netted Crowell? It might be interesting to know that. How many of those charged with some offense, were guilty of having a weapon, under the seat, with a filed off serial number? Because it involved a player, in a high profile position, with previous acts of defiance, misdeeds or anything else you want to call them, it was news.
The whole incident was dragged out in the press for way too long, and given that CMR did the right thing in a timely manner, we all just have to move on. I hope that this has taught a few of the younger folks on the team, that they have a responsibility that stretches beyond just playing ball, and that they are under constant scrutiny. It is not that fans do not care about the players as individuals. We don’t know them on a personal level all that well. Folks will however form opinions based on what they read and the incidences that take place and that is what C.W. must realize. Fans do have a right as well as non fans if you are a resident of this state. UGA is a public university and theses fans pay taxes. If not for the fans, the tax payer as it were, there would be no UGA, to offer a chance to these kids to improve their stock in life.

“It appears with the recent departures that UGA’s roster has dipped below 70 scholarship players, not counting the walk-ons awarded battlefield promotions. To put that into rather alarming perspective, that’s less than the scholarship limits imposed on Southern Cal as part of its NCAA probation!”

Well then Richt should have oversigned more often to account for the natural attrition that’s inevitable. All that’s happened now is that due to this attrition a lot of schollies that could have gone to deserving young men- mostly black, mostly from underprivileged backgrounds, went to waste. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

“The UGA staff has indicated they might sign as many as 30 players in the next class to try and bolster the team’s ranks, and increasingly that looks like something they’re absolutely going to have to do.”

Translation- UGA oversigned last year, will greatly oversign this year, and it looks like they will “absolutely” be oversigning in the future.

From the embarrassing unprepared performance against Boisy, to getting Lattimore-rushed again down to the beatdowns in the 2nd half by LSU\MSU, sustained consistent performance has been a huge issue for Grantham’s defense.

It is amazing to me the number of people on the ‘inside’ of UGA football. When I played sports, my teammates and I were close and we bonded together for common goals. We blocked out the fans and listened to our coaches and leaders. Coaches handled discipline issues internally. Fans had little knowledge of what was being handled internally or the discussions that were held. I see UGA football has the some roles and characteristics.

CW stood up for a teammate. It showed leadership and character. It may not have been PC or the right approach to PR, but it’s hard to watch a teammate get publicly ripped, no matter how much it’s deserved. I believe IC’s lack of maturity caused issues last year, but I don’t know all of what happened or what was said. I expect that some conversations remained private even from the team.

IC is gone. I wish him success and I hope he gets his act together. My focus as a fan is and will be on UGA, and I hope CW continues to be a leader for the Dawgs both on and off the field.

Let’s face it, there has always been turnover in college football and traditionally there has been little notice unless it was a starting QB or TB.

The difference now is the internet and media attention due to newspapers and internet sites printing anything having to do with a popular college football team due to the media’s fight for survival in a very competitive market.

Would the AJC even be in print now without Cox’s money behind it? I doubt so.

And the people who receive the resulting flack are college coaches and players. Hope the situation changes for the better for the sake of college football, but the media leeches will probably gut college football until it even isn’t any fun for the fans.

When the fans lose interest, then the media will move on to suck the blood out of something else.

2. The UGA head coach and most of the staff bromide no discipline, leadership or coaching to the players. Richt is a perennial underachiever stuck in the FSU heydays of scat backs. This does not work in the SEC. The buck stops at the head coach and instead of holding him accountable, we give a contract extension making more in a year than a hard working union man earns in his lifetime.

Folks, I think Washington’s initial response is very understandable. Most of you can empathize if you had a little brother. When one of your little brothers messed up and other people began to criticize and discipline them, you had similar mixed emotions. Part of you knows he has to be corrected, but when the criticism becomes personal or overdone, part of you wants to defend him. This kind of stuff can really hurt team chemistry! Everybody needs to understand that, wish IC the very best, and get back to team building for ‘12. Fortunately, we have some depth at TB, with Samuel and Malcome, along with Harton, K+ a million, and the promising freshmen. I hate this because I think IC could have been one of the great TBs in UGA history, but you just never know. Who would have ever thought that Tebow leaving a year early might have *helped* the Gators? It is possible that one Cam Newton would have made different choices. He might have led UF to two more NCs. I realize it may have worked out exactly as it did, but the point is–you just never know. The Dawgs could end up having a great season despite this huge distraction. Go Dawgs, and IC we are rooting for you to start making wise decisions and realize the fruits of the gifts God has given you!

For all the CMR defenders that say he is only one man and he can’t keep track of all his players 24/7, this can be said of all large organizations. But the success or failure of any organization is dependent on what this leader does. In order to manage behavior 24/7 he must establish a firm philosophy of what the organization represents and mode of behavior that supports this philosophy. He then builds an organization of leaders starting with the other coaches, upperclassman, and other natural leaders. In the absence of such a leadership organization and philosophy, the players will make up there own, hence IC became one of these leaders that had 3 freshman riding around at 3 am after bar hopping with an illegal gun and you have other “leaders” like CW defending his actions. For the people that defend IC because of his background, either stop recruiting players with this type of background or establish a leadership structure that can help these high risk players be successful in this new environment. For the people that laughed at GT for only having 15 slots available this year, do you understand why that is now? Good luck on “Dream Team III”, you will need one every year until CMR changes what he is doing.

GT75, criticizing aimlessly and actually perceiving what is going on are two different things, too. You haven’t got a clue what you are talking about. Richt has established tough boundaries, and a number of the young men on the team have tested the limits. Some are suspended, and a few are no longer Georgia Bulldogs. Georgia has much stricter rules than many other schools, and many have questioned why he is so tough. You see the discipline and conclude Richt isn’t leading. Just brilliant. At other schools, they sweep it under the rug through cooperative police departments and administrations, and you erroneously conclude they have no problems.

GT75

CHDawg, if it gets to the point of having to discipline someone for breaking the rules, the leadership has already failed. Having a high level of punishment doesn’t show leadership, rather it shows the leadership structure has already failed it’s people. An organization that depends on punishment as a main component of leadership always fails.

The law in Athens is actually 6 months of prison time for underage alcohol. And a small fine. And it’s a voilation of the UGA code of conduct, and could result in expulsion.

Murray would have gotten off likely since he was a first time offender, but without good representation, he could have ended up in jail for up to 6 months, it happens.

TNT, explain to me how Mettenberger has proven anything at LSU, has he started a game? As far as washaun ealey, he played at jacksonville state, is 1000 yards that impressive at that school. No one could argue ealey’s talent, but the bonehead decisions hurt the team. Crowell has great talent, but the continuous dumb decisions off the field as well as continually pulling himself off the field hurts the team.

Talent is a great thing; however, I’d rather have less talent and a guy I can depend on. Ealey and Crowell you could never depend on because you knew there was a chance each week that they might get suspended, and in crowell’s case there was a chance he would pull himself out after two carries. Mettenberger as far as I know only had one mistake, but it was a big one. As much hype as mettenberger had that spring, and that he had when going to LSU, he has still proven NOTHING on the field.

secfan, oversigning is a strange word. UGA is going to have a plenty of scholarships next year, more then thirty. They want to sign atleast 5 players that start in the spring semester, they will actually count towards this year’s class. Then hopefully sign the total 25 to start after the spring. This will give them 30 new recruits, but everyone will have scholarships.

This isn’t like saban that gets all the commitments he can without scholarships for them, then decides which ones he wants and lets the leftovers fall in the ditch.

CW says IC is his “friend.” As a parent, I always taught my children that the “friends” you choose in life have a tremendous impact on where you go in life. The old quote “Birds of a feather flock together” is true in so many ways. I admit to more than just a touch of concern that one of our team “leaders” is publicly claiming IC as a “friend.”

Like Big Don and Neutral say above, this men do not seem to understand, or care, any thing about responsibility to those who came before them and those who will follow after them. Their conduct, and yes a tweet is conduct, reflects badly upon our University and its graduates. Like it or not, they are a major part of the public image of the University. They know that. Mr. Washington, I obviously care more about the University of Georgia than many of the football team members do. Until this ME, ME, ME mentality is eradicated, I will find it difficult to care about you personally because it appears that all you care about is you. When you start caring about those that came before you and those that will come after you, I will give you the respect you deserve. Some unsolicited advice: grow up, be a man, care more about others than yourself, call team mates out when they act like jerks.

Nevertheless, my main concern is the cluelessness of the University’s leadership, or lack thereof, in this mess we call our football team.

For the first time in my life I must confess serious concern for the reputation of the University of Georgia. In addition, I must seriously think about having my grandchildren attend college some place else. Sure, the partying and drinking have always been a part of the college experience, but the “Thug” mentality of our current football team is extremely troubling. This is well beyond having a good time, something we all, hopefully, experienced in college. This is not simply immature conduct. This is scary stuff.

He is deliberately getting rid of players in order to make room for better ones. Such a practice is exactly what has fueled the over-signing controversy. The great irony is so many holier-than-thou UGA fans actually thought their school was above such roster management and sanctimoniously scream “Cheater” at other schools who use it. C. Washington sounded off because he was deeply hurt by the IC incident and the way people was reacting, mostly negative. As had been reported IC had made giant strides toward really making a name(positive) for himself and with UGA’s incoming RBs it could have been one hell of a season and likely still will be. What CW probably didn’t realize was that a large percent of the really vicious/negatives were posted by trolls and others not bonded to any team.

Once he saw some of the responses to his comments he realized that he was really wrong BUT the response/retraction of his original comments and even an apology should let everybody know the kind of person he is. That action took quite a bit “manning up”.

I live approx. 20 miles from CW and followed his HS career. He is a quality young man(I know….DUI) and I was very happy he chose UGA. I still am happy and hope he and all the other dawgs can learn from this and put it behind them. A) All said and done, I think Cornelius Washington has a point. That’s not to say that he did the right thing or that all Dawg fans are 100% wrong. There are, however, many among us who will bad mouth players whom they have never met about circumstances that they know very little about. It is not so much the criticism as the personal attacks (sometimes of a racist nature) that hurts morale and recruiting.

B) I am 100% glad that Washington stuck up for his teammate! I think it’s great that they are going to stick together as a team, take care of one another as a team, and play for each other as a team. Quite frankly they shouldn’t be worried about what us knuckleheads are saying or what the professional knuckleheads (the media) are saying about them.

C) Remember, while these guys do get wonderful opportunities, they bust there arses. It is a full time job and then some in addition to schooling. Also, remember that a lot of these young men come from places like Moultrie, Blakely, Cairo, Waynesboro, etc., and it is a lot of pressure being thrust into that world of opportunity with its constant surveillance and criticism.

All that being said, the ones that can deal are tougher for it. I am not defending any or all of the mistakes some UGA players have made. I am only asking some fans to consider these statements. Georgia is not the only school where young folks get into to trouble. In fact, I can’t think of a school where they don’t. If you don’t get that, your just fooling yourself. Maybe we should spend more time celebrating the achievements than bashing the mistakes. That would make us great fans. That would help continue to make UGA a place where great athletes want to have great careers and more importantly a great education.

It’s funny how we all laughed and even heralded the antics of Jake Scott (at odds with Dooley, riding his motorcycle of top of the coliseum, doing a great amount of partying, etc.). Yet, these players are all “spoiled gangsta PUNKS THUGS”????? I think there is a double standard. I wonder what that’s all about. Is Mettenberger a gangsta or a thug? Why not?

Columbus Dawg

chazzo, yes I would consider Mettenberger a thug, and I bet the father of the molested girl thinks he is a thug as well. I find it disturbing that Mettenberger is starting at a state Div.1 school on scholarship after his actions. Time will tell whether Crowell makes it back to D1 but I don’t think he deserves the honor either.

This is all you need to know about Cornelius Washington:

http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/2011/10/02/georgia-olb-cornelius-washington-arrested-in-jackson-county-for-dui/

He’s a dangerous drunkard driving a 2-ton killing machine around at almost a hundred miles per hour. We can only pray that he won’t kill any innocent bystanders on one of his alcohol-fueled rampages.

So think about this when you start feeling sorry for the guy.

I hope I.C. gets on with his life and we never have to play against him in a game. I don’t want to see our defense go after him or hurt him and I don’t want any bad blood between former team-mates. I know he’ll do fine if he stays out of trouble. Move on.
One good thing I see coming out of this is there will be more opportunity now for Marshall and Gurly to shine and I’m excited about that. OK, neither one have proved anything in the SEC yet but from what I’ve seen, these guys only need a little help from the OL and they will be fine. In the meantime, Malcome will be pulling at the bit for the ball. I also want to see Samuel taking a few swing-passes on the outside. Give the Big Dawg a bone CMB! All in all, I think we’ll overcome and move pass Crowell’s moving on. 55 and counting…

It seems that many people do not grasp that during summer there is little team leaders and coaches can do to control every action 24 hours a day of every player on the team. It is humanly impossible and at some point illegal. I think the program is going in the right direction. I you want to play for this team, PLAY for this team. If you don’t or you make a mistake, we aren’t going to try to hurt you and grind you down. We will focus on the players who want to PLAY at Georgia.

Very dumb thing for Washington to say/do. I think he fell into the same trap that some in here do and thinks that the hyper-negative stuff represents any sort of majority opinion of Dawg fans. It’s certainly not 99%. I doubt its 9.99%. With that said, I am not the least bit offended personally by his comments and only the guilty party(s) would be. (such as somebody who felt the need to respond to that on his personal face book page). I suspect we will see quite a few others raise thier hand in these pages.

Mettenberger was an idiot who puts himself over his team. Selfish tool. I hope we make it to the SEC-CG and get another shot at LSU and Coach Grantham can get after Mett, lol. I don’t think Mettenberger drove around with a gat under the seat but Crowell never sexually assulted anyone either. They are both going to be on probation for a while. With all of the UGA suspensions and attrition Mizzou would not be that big of an upset if any. This team is decimated and we will look like a 90’s Alabama team with very low numbers of players. However our reason is poor recruiting and laziness and theirs was NCAA punishments.

Burrows should have left; let Garner trick him a second time. Kid isn’t gonna get any better sitting the bench in Athens. There is a place for you in the Southern Conference. Get the playing time you need and the educational opportunities are better.

AH blew his knee out early, including nerve damage similar to the type that ended the careers of William Andrews of the Falcons and our own Robert Edwards of the Dolphins. He wasn’t a bust, he never had the chance due to injury.

HOW IRONIC IT IS FOR CW TO SCOLD THE NATION WITH THE ASSERTION THAT ” 99% OF YOU DON’T GIVE A CRAP ABOUT US OUTSIDE OF FOOTBALL” WHILE MOST OF THE PLAYERS SEE UGA AS A STEPPING STONE FOR THEM TO THE NFL AND DON’T CARE SQUAT ABOUT THE ILLUSTRIOUS SCHOOL THAT IS AFFORDING THEM WITH A SUCH A GREAT OPPORTUNITY. SHAME ON HIM!

Glad to see Bobby Nettles put Washington in his place; more athletes mrrd to look at the who, what, when, where and why’s before they start bashing out at supporter’s comments. Afterall, it is OUR money that gives you a chance at a 4 year free education, which most of you can only deliver 3!

CW has the right to say what he thinks, just like many of you throw players and coaches under the bus on these blogs. And he shouldnt have to apologize for anything!! Its called his right to opinion…and you dont have to agree with it. Too many ppl want to stomp on someone when they’re down, instead of giving support…we’re talking about young adults here, who all dont come from strong family backgrounds..and get built up to something they cannot handle before they step foot on the SEC field. Nobody is perfect!!

Bobby Nettles thinks “hardship” is 4 channels an a black & white TV.

Zumadawg,

I don’t completely disagree with you, but the notion of college being a stepping stone to the NFL is an overstatement. The vast majority of the players don’t make the pros, and many have no delusions about that. Some are not even on scholarship.

The way I see it besides the millions of dollars of revenue that the university and community get from these guys while taking advantage of that incredible opportunity for about 10% of them ever to even enter the draft is that all the players who have donned the red and black since I was old enough to say “football” have afforded me a lot of good times and great memories.

So maybe consider backing off of the self-righteousness just a tad, friend. A young man was upset about a friend getting into trouble. A young man puts his team above all else. Washington is a great Dawg and will give them hell this fall.

Amen

Just sayin’:

“no fewer than 47 college football players nationwide – an average of more than one every day – have been arrested or cited for everything from shoplifting and armed robbery to burglary, disorderly conduct and driving under the influence, according to arrestnation.com, a website that tracks the arrests of sports figures.

Five players at the University of Arkansas. One at Oklahoma State. Wisconsin Heisman Trophy finalist Montee Ball. Clemson All-American Sammy Watkins. Notre Dame quarterback Tommy Rees.”

At the golf course the other day, an old guy in an Auburn hat told me the problem was that richt recruits thugs. He went on to say that they need to recruit some “bad%$@ white boys.”

Well besides the fact that the guy was old school, good ol’ boy ignorant (and an Auburn fan), I had to wonder what bad%$@ white boys don’t have guns, drink whiskey, smoke weed, and chase tail?

Okay there’s Tebow… Name another.

As a public service, Mark Richt should put a GPS tracking device in Washington’s car, so people could see where he’s driving drunk and be able to avoid him. This could potentially save a lot of lives.

That “apology” from Washington came straight from the thUGA PR department. Your program is in major trouble mutt fans, with the attrition, thug behavior, team dissension and attitude / feelings your players have about your fans.

You guys have, for the second straight year in a row, the easiest schedule in SEC history. And you’re going to probably miss getting into the SEC big game because you are such a mess as a program.

@ TNT:

We need to take into consideration that while having only 53 players on their roster all 53 are TOP OF THE LINE, BEST OF THE BEST and WORLD BEATERS while college rosters often include 17/18 year old kids that have played only a couple of years of organized football. The NFL has a “practice sqad” they can draw from on a moment/week’s notice plus they can trade/buy new players!!!!!!!!!

I read Washington’s initial post and the infamous response by Mr Nettles, but I had not seen the follow-up posts. Not surprising since they weren’t as newsworthy or as controversial as the initial posts. Nevertheless, I am glad you provided that follow-up because I think Cornelius’ response was perfect, as was Mr Nettles’. Ready to get this whole thing behind us and move on to the season. Go Dawgs!

Of the 5 star running backs from two years ago, all but 2 are gone from where they originally signed, I read. Auburn for example, saw the departure of their Arkansas bred 5 star back skip town to Arky Stat, to be near Coach Gus Malzahn. So it goes with these kids.

If accurate, this is ominous. To me, it means that quality schools and programs must start recruiting a BETTER kid rather than chasing after problems. College is not a REHAB program, anymore than real life is. These thugs need to know that they better clean up their acts or NCAA or NFL will take them OUT.

Go Dogs.

I.C. put the last nail in his coffin by having four freshmen players in the car with him. I know he did not make them go but he had no concern about doing what’s good and honorable and setting an example. It’s sad but that’s just the way it is.Maybe he can rebound and turn his life into a success even if sports are not in the picture.??????????
