Bulldog Nation Attitude Check: Gamecocks or Gators? And back in black?
Taking the temperature of UGA fandom on a couple of issues …
For years, it’s been a given that the conference game that Dawgs fans most obsess over is Florida in Jacksonville. But with the rise of the Gamecocks program under Steve Spurrier and the intensifying of the battle for the SEC East, it’s a more complicated picture now.
Both Florida and South Carolina are SEC East teams, so technically the two games are equally important (though past experience has shown only beating one of them is absolutely necessary in order for Georgia to win the division).
Looking at the 2012 season, though, which would be worse? Losing to South Carolina for a third consecutive year or once again failing to beat the Gators in back-to-back years?
In other words, which do you want more, a win over South Carolina or a win over Florida?
Considering the scheduling scenario again favors Georgia in that South Carolina must face two tough teams from the West (LSU and Arkansas) that the Dawgs don’t have to play, it’s not unlikely that UGA again could lose to Carolina and still take the East (leading to another offseason of whining from Spurrier).
Meanwhile, there’s no denying that winning two years in a row over Florida would go a long way toward putting an end to Georgia players having the so-called “Jacksonville Jinx” in the back of their minds.
So, yeah, I still want a win over Florida more. How about you?

Remember back when everyone was so pumped over the possibility of Georgia wearing black jerseys? How Sanford Stadium erupted when the team changed jerseys after warming up and ran out onto the field in black to meet Auburn in 2007? And when the Dawgs again wore black later that season while trashing media darling Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl, the fans loved it.
Then came the Alabama game the next year. Another fan Black-out and … uh-oh, this time Georgia lost. And suddenly the cries of anguish rang throughout the Bulldog Nation: No more black jerseys!
Of course, the Dawgs didn’t lose to Alabama because they were wearing black, but that didn’t matter to the fragile fan psyche. And it didn’t help matters when Mark Richt, grasping at straws to try and motivate a leaderless team in a season from hell, went off the deep end in 2009 with black pants and (gulp) black helmets against Florida. The Grambling look probably wouldn’t have gone down well even if Georgia had won, which they didn’t. No more “fake juice,” the fans cried.
However, the Leather Helmet Blog this week opined that it’s finally time for the Dawgs to wear the black jerseys again. Wrote blogger Michael Booker: “Unfortunately, a large majority of Dawg fans associate failure with the black jerseys. I, however, remember the good times more than the bad. They look good, the kids love them, and it is 100% an official color of the university. I wish they would become more of a mainstay, and be part of the rotation frequently enough that many of the negative Nancy’s won’t freak out at the thought of them. I will always support red as the main color of the program, and feel at least 80% of all home games are played in the classic red jerseys. However, it should not be so out of the ordinary to enjoy the other color once in a while.”
I agree that the black jerseys looked terrific, and there’s no denying the players love them. But reintroducing them in another high-stakes game against a major opponent probably isn’t the way to go.
Rather, I’d like to see the Dawgs wear them this year for a not-so-crucial home game like, maybe, homecoming. Then, ultimately, I like the idea broached here a few months back in the Junkyard Mail: Georgia wearing black when Auburn plays in Athens.
So what do you think, should the black jerseys be revived this season, and if so when?

The Dawgs have to win both games, no ifs ands or buts. I like the black jerseys making the occasional appearance. What ever happened to the idea of doing the throwback uniforms for the Auburn game? I thought that was an interesting idea.

I’ve always said where the black when the hometeam wears white. That’s at LSU and at Tech. Maybe the occassional bowl game. Prefer that we stick with red at home.

I love the traditional Red…however, so many other schools have multiple “mix and match” uniforms and it doesn’t seem to bother their “psyche” at all. Mix it up!!! Let the kids have fun!!!

No kidding. With the UGA record being four wins out of the last twenty-two attempts, and also drooling over the three NC that the Gators have during that time frame, I am surprised that the suicide rate in GA has not risen at a faster pace.

Since the Dawgs have high expectations on them this year I fully expect them to lose both games and possibly a third. CMR’s teams don’t handle high pressure situations very well. I hope this turns out to be the year that the players put it together in spite of their coaches and make a run for the title.
As a fan of all the ATL sports teams I know that no matter how talented the team may be in the end heartache will be delivered to its fans in the form of a choke job. It’s just the nature of teams in Atlanta.

I hope Coach Richt just concerns himself with getting the team ready to play hard from the opening kickoff, and pays no attention to all that changing uniforms and jersey colors and helmet designs and “Black out the stadium!” crap. We can have fun with that later on, if you want, but right now we’ve got MUCH more important things to worry about. We have a good schedule ahead, we had a good recruiting year, and some talented players coming back. It’s time for that to be translated into actual victories on the football field.

I think that maybe that 2008 season was such a hyped season for UGA and was such a let down, there is a negative energy among some fans about that year and the black jersey is a reminder of how unprepared CMR’s team seemed to be for that season. I have a red jersey that I wear only on game day, and only during the game. If UGA wins, it goes back in the closet, if they lose, I wash it. I got a black one after the Auburn game, and wore it for the bowl game, and then the Alabama game. I havent worn it since, and probably will not do so even if UGA decides to put em back on for a game.

Wait and see how the season goes before changing colors. Haven’t had too much success lately with color changes…. Boise, Bama and Florida. None of these was very close. Avg score I think was about 39 them 22 us.

It’s really all about Spurrier anyway. I want to beat his whinnin’ ass when ever we can. As far as the Black Jerseys go, I like them. We just don’t need to make such a big deal out of it. No Blackouts etc. just wear them at least once a year at home for the players and the fans. Maybe aginst the nerds every year or the last home game.

The Florida dominance over the DAWGS began with Spurrier and is showing its ugly head with him at South Carolina! The DAWGS should have won the game last year except for the blatant missed block on Clowney who shook Murray like a rag doll causing a fumble and immediate touchdown for South Carolina. It’s time the DAWGS stepped up and showed both Florida and South Carolina that they can be beaten by the DAWGS! No trade-offs, which one to beat and which one to lose……just do it!!! For goodness sakes, don’t let Spurrier beat you 3 times in a row!! Florida should not be as good this year but still to be reckoned with. GO DAWGS!!

As much as I hate losing to Carolina 3 years in a row, it’s imperative (vital, crucial, essential, necessary, etc…) that we beat Florida consecutively as many times AS POSSIBLE to diminish/shake off the FLORIDA FUNK that we can’t seem to rid of up to this point. Kinda like what the Red Sox vs the Yankees. As we all know, Since Spurrier departed it’s mostly in our heads.

On The Black Jerseys, I say against Vandy this year. The way the game went down last year with cheap shots and arguments that would be a great game to put the anger back into the black jersys. Plus UGA should defeat vandy and get a win back on the side of the balck jerseys. IF they do it keep it a secret until the players come out. I don’t like the idea of advertising for a “black out” as it seems forced.

I like Cousin Eddie’s idea of wearing the black jersies against Vandy. Their coach is a thug and you know what they say about paybacks. Rarely do I get fired up about Vandy but I’ve got that game circled on my schedule and hope the team does too.

The Dawgs will never be, and should never be, respected on the national scene until they beat SC and Fla in the same season. With Spurrier at SC and Fla holding a NC trophy, UGA is always the “also ran”. Winning the East without beating those two teams just makes us look as if we slipped in the back door while the real teams were fighting it out in the front yard.

2. Havn’t had any luck stopping Lattimore with the 3-4, he just plows through for 200 yards a whack. THE UGA o line doesn’t come near the SC D-line, look for Clowney to set a record that day. So gonna lose that one too.

I will be the first to say I am not a UGA fan, however I am a SEC Fan. Anytime UGA is playing ANYONE outside of the SEC I want them to beat their opponent as bad as possible.
Being a Georgia Native, I want every State School to win each week when playing in any sport.
As for the Black Jerseys, it was a nice Gimmick by Richt for a while to keep his kids interested, however I agree with others it is more about putting a consistent winner on the field and winning those important games.
I will pull for all three SEC teams this weekend at the CWS. If those three teams fail, I will pull for the next closest thing to the SEC and that school is Florida St. It is a southern thing.

I’m torn on the black jerseys. They were magnificent against Auburn and Hawaii in ‘07, and miserable in those other instances you mentioned. They were a gimmick, and it’s far too easy to lean on gimmicks when we’d all much rather just notch wins. I could give a hoot less if the Dawgs wear hula skirts against the Gators, as long as we beat the brakes off them….

Definitely Florida is the team to beat. The record since Dooley left is embarrassing. If CMR wins this year we would have won 3 of the last 6. UF still does not have much of an offense and should still be somewhat down. CMR’s 11 year record against all rivalries is good except for Florida.
I am expecting CMR’s best season ever—mainly because of Grantham and secondarily because of our schedule. We will be picked to win in all games until the SEC championship. Even if that is our only loss, I think we should be able to play LSU again for the National Championship, right Alabama?

2 in a row over Florida would be awesome but I think it’ll probably be between Georgia and South Carolina for the east again this year it’d probably be better to get the head to head victory over them. They need to beat both UF and SC this year. With all of the returning players, no real excuses. Defense should play with their ears pinned back, absolutely relentless; the offense needs to be bold and quite playing to do just enough.
I was at the Auburn Blackout, so I say bring ‘em back every now and again. We are the Red and Black, after all. I agree with those who’ve said they need to be incentive, though. And not big time games at first… So wear ‘em against Tech this year!

Does Bill King already know and just keeping it from UGA fans?
Why the rush of decommits and loss of players to out of state schools?
How does UGA with the “greatest DC in college football ” lose out on the nation’s top defensive player from its own state? Despite assurances that UGA cherry-picks all the top players from every recruiting class, this kid was lost not to Bama, UF, Auburn, or LSU but to Clemson, the school last seen giving up 70 freaking pts to a Big East school? Is Grantham that off putting to recruits that the best defensive recruits from Georgia would rather go get landblasted at Clemson that play in Athens?
Add to this the loss of the committed RB, Henry, plus the big OL to SC and there seems to be a story brewing.

I loved the Dawgs wearing the black jersey’s, even when we lost I think it brings something fun and fresh to the game. The GA/Auburn 2007 meeting is still in my top 3 of favorite games I have ever seen and the black jerseys were a big part of it. Ok with the black jerseys occasionally but put some BRIGHT UGA RED NUMBERS on those dull white road(visitor) jerseys. We wore white jerseys with red numbers back in the early 70s and they looked great.Also, a road uniform of red helmets, white jerseys with BRIGHT RED NUMBERS and red pants is one of, if not the best looking uniform in college football.Why not try it if games aren’t won or lost based on the uniform.

I’m a Georgia fan and have been since the early 80’s and I prefer the uniforms worn by Georgia during that time period.
I hope now that Georgia has apparently lost one wr and a rb decommiting but still considering Georgia,

Some good suggestions been made. Like the idea of using them periodically, and not necessarily for just big games.
Not sure Todd Grantham is the best DC in college football, as one poster wrote, but he is among the best. Recruit Davin Bellamy, who has made a number of visits around the South, said he liked Georgia’s scheme and the way TG uses the outside linebackers better than any place he had visited.
Also, Bama is the big loser in the Nkemdiche saga. They were counting him as a lock. His high school coach being a Bama guy, and also Dabo’s college teammate evidently carried significant weight with the kid. RN is better suited to a 4-3, so Clemson or LSU would have been good fits for him.
As for the OL situation, Dogs are in great shape. Brown and Seymour almost locks, Tunsil a good possibility.
Kamara not as publicized as Henry, but has a high ceiling, and likely is a Dog.
Would not be surprised to see Priester’s WR slot filled soon, not counting the recruitment of blue-chipper Marquez North continues.
Definitely shaping up as a monster class.

NO BLACK unless its unannounced and the team just runs out wearing it. When the crowd is in a blackout it alerts the incoming team to focus harder on the Dawgs. It worked ONCE agaisnt Auburn at a good time. It did not work against Bama because #1 we were NOT ready…and #2 Bama knew it was going to happen and said “they’ll be dressing for their own funerals.” I want our traditional look with the silver britches the ENTIRE season.

We have never beat SC, FLA, and TENN. in the same year. The best years we have had in the CMR years it has never happep, 2002 Beat tenn. and sc lost to fla, 2003 beat sc and tenn lost to fla, 2004 beat fla and sc lost to tenn, 2005 beat sc and tenn lost to fla, 2007 beat fla lost to sc and tenn, 2008 beat sc and tenn lost to fla, 2011 beat tenn and fla lost to sc. Almost all of the losses in this list we were the better team on paper with good QBs, RBs and Dfnse (2005 Fla shockley injured and still only lost by 7). We have to beat all three teams in the same season to get over the hump.

My 2 cents on both points:
1) When South Carolina reels off 18 out of 21 against us, we can discuss this. Until then, we can’t beat Florida bad enough or often enough to quench my hate for them.
2) A jersey change is a gimmick/motivational tool. I liked the black jerseys myself, but I have a saying about gimmicks, motivational tools, etc…: They are worthless when you suck on defense, and we did from 2008-2010. Thank GOD we hired Todd Grantham and showed Willie the door.

Black jerseys look cool. They don’t win or lose game. They did serve as a motivator against AU. They were a surprise of sorts. However, when you announce it ahead of time, as Richt did with Alabama, it is essentially poking your finger in the other guy’s chest and calling him a pansy. Result=great motivation for Alabama. Great lesson in psychology for Richt and crew. The jersey color, however, has nothing to do with winning or losing. What works great is to have a bunch of players who will work their tails off and execute fundamentals like clockwork (like Boise State last year and Alabama most every year).

It’s just been in recent years that USC has been recruiting almost as good as UGA. But it doesn’t matter. The games have always been close regardless of the talent gap because Richt and Bobo don’t play good teams well and certainly don’t know how to put them away. With USC starting to match our talent, it’s going to be a hard game to win every year.

I actually think the black jerseys should be worn at home games starting after 6:00 p.m. It is an appropriate color for a special occasion and I think it would bring the jerseys into vogue and set a time and place to wear them on a more regular basis. The fans and players would know when they were wearing them and take all the worry about good or bad luck. Plus they really do look good.

Not an option for beating either, UGA needs to beat BOTH a conference loss is bad either way. I feel UGA has the talent to be capable of beating both, The dawgs just need to quit shooting themselves in the foot when it comes down to winning against both of these teamS.
In regards to the uniforms I am normally a traditionalist, but if the black jerseys come out again, I think a sliver helmet with the G, a black facemask, and red and black trim would be a sharp addition to compliment the britches. Just my .02 on it

I don’t like choices like this, Bill. Both games are must-wins every year. You can measure our season by them. We simply have to win both, and losing either game is unacceptable. The black jerseys, unlike the Devil costumes, look really cool on the Dawgs. They aren’t using an entirely new uniform (big mistake), but they use their helmets and shoes, etc. Finally, we aren’t superstitious folks: the jersey colors have nothing to do with the outcome of the game. The color of your shirt doesn’t affect your test score–how well you studied controls it. Choose the unis for utility and then looks–the black jerseys as an occasional change-up are a winner on both counts imho. Bring’em back.

We have 5 equally tough, important and long-term rivals EVERY year in which all are important….
South Carolina (remember when it made their season to beat us but never did?), Tennessee (which has been down for the last few years), Florida (duh!) and Auburn. The Tech game seems to be more important to Tech than to UGA fans, but it still is very important! So you can say that EVERY year the Dawgs play 5 tough rivalry games every year….no matter the rotation….all 5 have a different feel and intensity! And we used to have Clemson….

If football fans — much less actual players — really need something like that to get inspired, then you have to wonder about the motivation of that program.
Was it not enough for Georgia that it was playing the nation’s No. 1 team in one of the best settings in college football? Apparently not. Florida’s attire was remarkably traditional as it repeatedly worked over Georgia’s defense.
If you win, it can be applauded. But if you lose, it’s viewed as a useless gimmick, a waste of time and energy that could have been spent preparing for an opponent.

I prefer the Dawgs to beat Florida 100 times more than beating South Carolina. I feel as if our team is athletically more gifted than South Carolina, and thus can beat them on a not so great day. Florida on the other hand always has speed, the extra motivation to continue their late dominance,and the actual dominance over Georgia as of late. There is an aura that we have to be on our A game, and then have lady luck on our side as well to beat the Gators, and it proves to be true. A win over Florida does more to boost confidence than a win over South Carolina in my eyes.
As far as black jerseys are considered, I think they would be best as a surprise instead of planning it and letting the fans, media, and opponents catch wind and start up all the crap from the Aabama game. Spring them on newcomers Missouri or Texas A&M to add that extra level of psychology. I absolutely hated the Combat uniforms and those atrocious attire for that one Florida game. I’ll take the black jerseys, or an away silver jersey and red helmes for a Missouri game.

If you take the stigma off, then the fan base will settle down about them. bringing them out once every year or couple of years is fine, and I agree that Red should remain our dominant Jersey. I think it ought to be a reward. Something like beat Florida, and you get to wear them at an upcoming home game against an SEC opponent. Uniforms as ‘juice’, I think it worked to a point. It’s not why we lost when we lost, but it may have been a distraction that affected the psyche of the team. Richt did a good job counteracting that with the pro combat unis.

Part of the problem with the whole thing is the fact that they have only been used for special occasions – typically big games and then the black jersey gets associated with that. I would suggest simply put a policy in place that black will be worn for all night home games and nighttime neutral site games when Georgia is considered the home team. That should simplify it and add a little excitement to every night game for players and fans. By the way – I even liked the black helmets – we should reconsider those for night games as well. Florida is the team UGA has to beat to break the spell. Beating them and USC would be best of course, but UGA has to break the curse.
As far as the black jerseys, I’ve said for a while they need to come back out and be a once a year thing. I work in sports and one of the sayings that they have is, “if you look good you feel good, if you feel good you play good.” I understand UGA lost two games with these jersey’s but was it just that UGA wasn’t as good of a team? I do disagree with one thing though, don’t play it safe when you pick the game. That will just make UGA look scared.

I love the black jerseys, how about all black (black helment, black jersey & black pants with black shoes). It’s time for a lil change but we will keep the red as the home jerseys & white as the away jerseys. We don’t need too many jerseys combos but adding black to the combo is awesome.
Now that we have the black jerseys down how about a few key wins, S.C & Fla don’t dominate UGA we just make stupid mistakes at the wrong time. We had S.C last yr but Murray tried to do a lil too much but he will be better this yr & he will not try to do it all on his own. Murray it’s ok to take the sack or throw the ball away

I think if they wear black go with a Black Face mask with the Red Helmet and black pants to go along with it. Plus the usual strips. Just a thought! Ga needs to play Mason! He is by far the better QB. He knows his check downs and will keep the offense moving with his ability to find the open receiver and not just the primary.

WE have lost in Red and White jerseys…so whats teh point? Ban those as well? The black ones look sharp…especially at home during night games!! Its about what the players enjoy…puck some of the dawg fans who jump off and on the band wagon. IF they players want to play in them, and gives them a lil extra motivation…i’m all for it. The problem with the team is the no emotions HC, the boring offense and a defense that can’t stop the pass or sometimes the run. The CBs can’t defend or won’t tackle the opposing RBs and Bobo can’t call plays or devise a offense to break down the opposing defense. Also, read on another blog that commit Shaq Wiggins visited UF and he feels that UGA should continue to recruit him. If he has committed, can someone tell me why these kids expect to continue to want the coaches to recruit them instead of spending that time to bring in better players to complete the class. This is why when Saban recruits and he finds a better one than he already has, he finds a way to get rid of them. UGA has maybe 33 schollies for the 2013 class and if these wannabe UGA commits don’t want to stay, pull the schollies and recruit some better players.

@ Black Mojo. The entire team is boring. They have no excitment, no swag, no killer instinct and that we can thank CMR for. When you get a big lead, you keep pouring it on. As Jimmy Johnson once said,” I can’t help if my third string is better than your first string.” The coach and the team need to develop a mean streak and it will carry the a long way, if not UGA will continue to be a doormat for other team. Vanderbilt is coming to win and after last year, UGA better learn how to be a much more physical team and learn how to put teams away for good.
