Vegas thinks Mark Richt will be striking this pose after every regular season game in 2012. (Jason Getz / AJC)
We’ve already established that Vegas oddsmakers like the 2012 Dawgs, but it turns out they’re so high on Mark Richt’s upcoming team that the folks who come up with point spreads have installed UGA as the early favorite in every game on the schedule.
At the Golden Nugget, Georgia is a 3-point favorite over Missouri, a 13.5-point favorite over Tennessee, a 2.5-point favorite over South Carolina, a 4.5-point favorite over Florida and a 6-point favorite over Auburn. And Pregame.com rates Georgia as the favorite in every game on its schedule.
Of course, as has been discussed here, Richt teams have had a disturbing tendency in the past to falter under high expectations, and playing as the favorite every week is going to be as big a challenge this season as rebuilding that offensive line and getting the special teams to quit rolling gutter balls.
The Athens Banner-Herald talked with a couple of the team leaders about Georgia playing as the favorite at the Pigskin Preview in Macon.
“It’s great that people say that, but I think it does put a lot of pressure on us to go out and just win games,” safety Shawn Williams said.
And quarterback Aaron Murray noted that, with a key difference, the Dawgs face a similar problem to last year, when they had to ignore all the media noise about their coach being on the “hot seat.”
“Our motto last year was, ‘We’re on the bus and we’re not listening to any outside noise,’” Murray said. “There was a lot of negative noise, and we wanted to ignore that. The hard thing now is to ignore all the positives and people wanting to pat you on the back and tell you that you’re great and this and that. We have to ignore that, too, and just do what we did last year.”
Or better.
After last year’s 0-2 start, the Dogs reeled off 10 straight wins and took the SEC East, only to end the season with a couple of disappointing losses. But as a team loaded with returning talent and playing the favorite’s role every week this fall, just notching 10 regular season wins again probably won’t be viewed as an entirely satisfactory outcome by many in the Bulldog Nation.
But what would constitute a disappointing season in your eyes? Less than 10 wins? Or perhaps anything less than the SEC championship? Feel free to weigh in with a comment, vote in the poll or both.

UGA just needs to play with a killer instinct and not so tight. Richt and Bobo need to loosen things up somehow with the game plan. If we get creative again, our talent should be enough. But if we continue to “play not to lose”, teams with lesser talent will continue to hang around and potentially pull off upsets (i.e. Michigan St.).

does anyone remember the Clemson game in 2002? We were up by 3 very late and went for it on 4th down inside our own territory instead of punting. I think Musa Smith got the 1st and we won the game. Afterwards, I loved Richt’s comment. He said his decision was based more on the mindset he wanted to establish with the team than “getting the 1st down”. Man, I miss those days. Where we just went for it and lived with the consequences.

I agree “SM 61″, CMR is doing a fine job and we’re blessed to have him. I believe our team will play hard in every game and, with the talent the coaching staff has gathered, that will put us in a position to win in every match up on the schedule. I also think the “D” is gonna totally shut down a good bit of the teams we play this year.

Two or more regular season losses will be very disappointing with our schedule and the seniority and fire-power we have coming into the season, particularly on defense. If the OL can rise to the occasion and do their part, we should be clicking on all cylinders.

UGA SHOULD HAVE WON NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS TWICE WITH IN 2002 AND 2005 WHILE GREEN AND POLLACK WERE THERE. A NICK SABAN OR URBAN MEYER WOULD HAVE WITH THAT ( JIM DONNAN TALENT) STILL THERE.
UGA WAS A CONSENSUS NUMBER ONE IN 2008 WITH MORENO AND STAFFORD AND RICHT COULD NOT GET IT DONE WITH ALL OF THAT TALENT. AGAIN SABAN, MEYER, OR LES MILES WOULD HAVE WON A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP WITH THAT TYPE OF TALENT.
SOOOOO…HERE WE GO AGAIN. UGA HAS NINE RETURNING STARTERS ON DEFENSE. THEY HAVE A GREAT QB WITH TWO YEARS SEC EXPERIENCE. UGA IS LOADED AT RUNNING BACK. THEY HAVE A SOLID OFFENSIVE LINE. UGA HAS RED SHIRTED VERY WELL CREATING DEPTH FOR THIS SEASON.
IN SHORT…..THERE IS TONS OF TALENT PLUS A CAKEWALK SCHEDULE ( ONLY ONE OR TWO TEAMS THE PLAY) ARE IN THE TOP 25!
IF UGA CAN’T GO ALL THE WAY WITH THIS TALENT AND PLAY FOR THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP WITH THESE PLAYERS——–RICHT NEEDS TO BE FIRED.
THE PROBLEM WITH RICHT IS THE FACT THAT THE RECRUITING CLASSES NEVER EQUATE TO A TOP TEN RATING??????
COULD THAT BE COACHING????HMMMMM……

I think with Richt it’s put up or get out time. If this team underperforms how does he go back on the hot seat? To late for that, this Dawgs hopes that if this team underperforms McGarity goes coach hunting.
A disappointing season to me would be losses to teams we have no business losing to. Showing up unprepared. Players continuing to put themselves above the team, i.e. look at the early season suspensions. Aaron Murray continuing to make rookie mistakes with no apparent accountability. I would just like to see this team show up and play HARD every game. Win the battle of conditioning late in a tight game against a quality opponent.
I’m hoping for the best, but prepared for disappointment once again, using your own words Bill, “Richt’s teams have had a disturbing tendency to falter under high expectations”. It’s hard to change the spots on a Dawg.

Some of you are quick to throw CMR out but have you considered a replacement? All teams have had a bad run of coaches after throwing out a winner. Look at Tennessee, Florida, Auburn, Alabama (prior to Saban) and exactly what will Arkansas be this year with Petrino gone? Interesting question that some of you need to try to answer.

Sounds like an LSU model to me Insider. Can Richt and Bobo have enough patience to stay with a running game, sometimes it takes well into the third quarter to tire a defense to the point where a power running game can control the game. Richt’s achilles heel, IMO, is his inability to be patient, he’s got to be throwing the ball down the field.

The athlet3s are there, the coaching is there, so I don’t see why not. As long as the young men perform up to their potential, there is no reason UGA can’t be in the discussion for the big picture as the year progresses. The key for UGA, will be not to play down to the level of their opponent.

These gambling sights have a LOT more faith in our rebuilt offensive line that I do. Our offensive line was pretty bad last year, and we just lost our 3 best linemen to the NFL/graduation.
Murray has been great, but he has GOT to take better care of the ball. He gave up 42 points (6 pick sixes; 1 fumble return for a TD) by himself. He had 18 turnovers. Just eliminating some or hopefully all of that will be a huge boost.

The season hasn’t even begun so let’s remember “Sport Illustration” in 2008 and keep things in perspective and play the up-coming season games one at a time. I hope Georgia goes all the way and meet either Alabama or LSU in the southeastern conference game.
There’s no doubt this is a veteran team but until the games are played, it’s all hype. The team needs to stay focused and grounded and remember one mistake and any game can get away from them, no matter who the team is!

Insider, last year’s Auburn game was the first complete game that I have seen the Dawgs play in a long time against a rival, or any decent team for that matter.. They were able to run the ball successfully in the second half with Crowell leading the way. Actually with the OL leading the way. This type of play will be absolutely necessary to win the tough games in the conference, and I even mean against teams like Vandy who will come to Athens with a log, not just a chip on their shoulders. When turnovers are limited, and overall special teams play is adequate, good things can happen.
So, what you are saying is that Hines is trying to teach Bobo the O used by the Steelers? I guess we’ll see how that works out.

As long as Coach Bobo sticks to his bad play-calling habits and the 2nd half “turtle shell” that he crawls into, we will be in a position to lose several games this year that we have no business losing. If we would play 4 quarters of aggressive offense, and never take the foot off of the gas, we could avoid some of these close calls……… (This doesn’t mean passing 50 times – it means being unpredictable at times, and sticking with what is working instead of stopping what is working). Toss sweeps, fullback runs, screen passes, 8 yard routes on 3rd and 7, etc…. Go for the kill when we have a chance to put the other team away, instead of letting them back into the game by sitting on a lead. ………GO DAWGS!

You know I always wonder about the people that say CMR does less with more. Harold, yes CMR is good at getting talent into Athens, but if you will look at the ranking each year that CMR has been head coach, there have been AT LEAST 2, if not 3 SEC teams that, according to the rankings that have recruited BETTER. The way that I look at it, since CMR has 2 SEC Championships and 4, 5 if you count shared, SEC East Titles, then he is doing more with LESS. Still, I don’t care, he is the head coach for the GA Bulldawgs and I support the team, that includes the head coach. I really do not understand all the hype for UGA this season guys? I mean OL problems, just average at receiver, we dont have any proven running backs,… potential yes but untested. We have freshmen comming in for kicking duty; Murray is good, but he does have his faults with TO’s. Everyone says we are so predictable on Offense and no indication that that is going to change…..We have our D with major suspensions to start the season… when they come back will they be game ready??? I just dont see it. I am the biggest of dawg fans but I just dont see where these high expectations are realistic which puts CMR and the team in a hot seat situation even if they lose just 2 games.
And if we do lose a couple in the first half, the complaining will start based on these high expectations and I see it hurting this recruiting class.

I’m with Mobile on that one. It’s absolutely ridiculous to try to say that with Grantham, we WOULD have wom the title in 2008. Let’s consider these realities:
That was perhaps one of UF better teams in modern times, so assuming we beat tebow on that mission is a stretch. Looked better, perhaps.
The next best team I saw that year was Alabama. In your assumptions, we would have had to have beat them TWICE, then Oklahoma (which just as many folks thought were number one going in as they did Georgia)
Grantham’s style is almost entirely based on a Big fierce front line. Are you suggesting that we would be this good IFJenkins, Washington, and Geathers go down early, and thier back-up are hobbled at times? That’s the equivalent of that Grantham would have dealt with in 2008. Then add that he would not have been able to substitute at LB for the second half of the year. And let put a cast on Rambo’s hand while we are at it.
Hell, YOU’ve got Grantham’s Dawgs losing FIVE games this year because he is down a few of starters for a game or two, and you think he goes 13-1, or 14-0 that year?

I would have a lot more confidence if our Head Coach would jerk our QB out of the game when he throws a pick-6, but I have not seen that happen. I would have more confidence if our Head Coach would send out the back-up kicker after our 1st stringer fouls up so many FGs.

Somebody wanted to know why if the o-line was so bad, how do we keep sending some to the pros? Yeah, we have a few good individual talents occasionally, but as a unit (and anyone who played the game knows this) we still are light years behind LSU and ‘Bama….period! We will have a great individual lineman sometimes, but top to bottom we lag. Boise State, LSU and Michigan State handed our butts to us up front….they DOMINATED our line! We recruit well EXCEPT for the o- line, which for you novices out there happens to be where the game is won. I think we will improve, but others will have to step up until our line gets a little experience AND our coaches recruit 1st class talent on the o-line like we have been able to do everywhere else! I ain’t totally writing them off, but the good teams (once again) will expose our weaknesses….o-line being the big ‘un!

Someone asked about the o-line….this will again be our weakness! Yeah, we send a few to the pros but top to bottom, we lag behind, as LSU, Boise State and Michigan State showed us. We recruit everywhere else wonderfully, but the game is won up front. Nothing offensively will improve (against the better teams) until we get better up front. Its coming, hopefully, but it ain’t here yet!

CMR decided 2 years ago to put all his eggs in one basket with Murray and it seems to me that reguardless of how Murray plays, he will always remain his guy. If Murray doesn’t follow his past history and doen’t screw things up, CMR will be fine. If Murray turns the ball over like he has the last 2 years, CMR will be feeling the heat again.

Alabama won the national Championship last year because McCarron didn’t panic and start forcing things which would have resulted in turnovers. The only thing I want Murray to do this year is to not panic under pressure. When you lose a game because of turnovers and everybody in the stadium knows that you out played the opponent but just didn’t out score them it show very poor leadership. McCarron want win any prizes for last years performance but he will be remembered as a great leader.

Just trying to be a realist here – Yea I think we have average receivers especially now that we are moving our best to DB….my point it that i feel we are being over hyped by the media… just too many holes to fill to be predicted as going undefeated… I sure hope we do! ….. An OL…. several pieces written that we are counting on Theus comming in as a freshman and manning a tackle spot… Not saying he is not good, but if you counting on a freshman to anchor an OL in the SEC????? Hope theyre right but I think were getting too much credit.

How many games will Georgia lose this year? We should be able to win at least 9 games for sure because we have a better team than our opponents. The three that should be the toughest are Missouri, South Carolina and Florida . If we do not turn the ball over and any of the three beat us because they are just better and everybody knows it at the end of the game , I for one can live with that. I don’t like losing but if another team was just better I will give them the credit they deserve. What I can’t live with is to beat the he@@ out of a team like we did against South Carolina last year and lose the game because of turnovers. I hope everybody knows if we hadn’t completed two fourth down plays last year against Florida we probably lose that game. It shouldn’t have been that close, we were a much better team than Florida last year and was very lucky to have won the game.
Murray has all the potential in the world to be a great Quarterback but if he doesn’t show better leadership I hope CMR will give another Quarterback a chance. Every time Murray is questioned by a reporter he gives a great answer as to what needs to happen but it seems he is talking about the rest of the team and not himself. I really don’t think he realizes that Georgia had three glaring problems last year . First, is poor special teams play. Second, no running game and the most important was lack of leadership at Quarterback. Murray wouldn’t be the first Quarterback that had all the intangibles to being one of the great’s in college history but just couldn’t play under pressure. He should be given a short leash this year. Missouri will tell us a lot , I hope Murray shows that he has become the leader we all hoped he would become.

A “chance”? Do you really want to pin our hope of beating the better teams on a “chance” that a back up QB can outplay the 3rd year starter?(when he has shown no sign that he can) My guess is that is not a chance you would take if you were in charge of that call. You give chances when its appropriate, the same time every player on the team has a chance to win the position.

Richt and Bobo have failed to teach Murray is main function is “Don’t beat us Bud”! Nor do Richt or Bobo have the patience to run the ball and go 3 and out and then comeback and run it again thus they attempt to make a chicken salad sandwich out of chicken sheet over and over. Richt and Bobo have a history of play calling and if you think the other teams don’t know that then you’re in the same position as those two. You have to run the damn ball when you want to run it thus making the DC’s play your game instead of you playing his. Murray has a mental problem in that when the pressure is dialed up he will try and pull some great throw or play out of his azz and presto you’re behind the 8 ball and that my friends is documented and the #1 reason you’re not getting wins over good football teams. The truth is Murray has taken over the hot seat that the preacher man was on last year whether he knows it or not! “That is all I got to say about that”…….Forrest…..Roll Tide Roll…….

All reports are the HM does great in practice and we see gday games. There are some guys that reall are much better game day than practice too. Just saying that I feel the talent is even enough in practices thru the week that if one QB goes into a funk there is nothing wrong with running another out for a shot or two during meaningfull times in a game. Might find a spark! MR or Bobo should just think outside their box a little on the QB situation and get off this “intitled” mentality. Not knocking AM just tweaking a bit to find a better combination maybe… Just like we would do at every other posistion.

The pressure’s on. We have such talent and such a weak schedule that it would be hard to see us loosing more than two games. However, if we did slip into the 9-3 range, it would get vicious out there. As a whole, here’s what the Bulldawg Nation sees; we got back all our players and an even weaker schedule than last season. Mix that up with the potential we saw last year and many many fans are ready to see Richt hoist the crystal ball. If we lose more than two games, many fans (including me) are going to be calling for Richt and Bobo. Some we’ll say it’s unfair judgement, I say it would be pathetic to go 9-3 with what we have in front of us. We are loaded on defense: seniors across the chart on the D-Line and secondary, and a couple of the most ferocious linebackers in the country. Offense, Aaron Murrey had smoking numbers last year but still had somewhat of a sophomore slump in a few areas: protecting the ball in critical times, and accuracy. I believe Murrey is poised for a big year with our latest additions to the running game (and the talented backs we already have) and depth at wide receiver. The big question there is the O-Line, I would be much more worried if had to play LSU and Bama. But since we have the luxury of not having to play them, I am still concerned but not as much.
I truly hope this is Richt’s year but there are a few major concerns that we just won’t know about till the season rolls around. GO DAWGS.

Yes. We should fire our coach if we do not win an SEC champion ship. That logic worked great for UMich (Carr), UT (Fulmer), and Notre Dame. Plus FSU got amazing immediately after Bowden was shown the door, same with West Virginia. Obviously, the key is an up and coming coach, which is why their is so much buzz for Colorado to win multiple national championships in the next few years.
Either that, or our (mostly millenial) fans have no idea how to actually set expectations for a football team.

Season could go either way at this point. If we get by Mizzou we’re probably undefeated going into Columbia, however Vandy or UT could be a trap game, especially UT being prior to USC. If we’ve played solid and are undefeated we should have some confidence going to USC and probably win. Still have to be concerned about UF and AU, I’m not buying UF being down. They may not be as formidable but they have had the it factor over us for years. We could win them all, we could potentially have 4 or 5 losses. statement from Derrick Henry
This has been a great experience getting to know so many great coaches and visiting some of the best college football programs in the country. Even though I’ve worked really hard to put myself in this situation, I know I’m blessed to have this opportunity I’m very thankful for that.
For me personally, this is one of the biggest decisions I’ll make in my life and probably the most important to this point. I want to be 100 percent sure I am making the best choice on where I go to college and to play football. I’m going to open up my recruitment and take some more visits, get as much information as I can, and then decide from there. I was probably a little too quick in making my initial decision and got caught up in the moment so I apologize for that. I’m still considering Georgia and I have nothing but great things to say about their program, but I want to be honest with everyone in the fact that I am going to go over all my options and do what is best for me and my athletic and academic career.
For the rest of the summer, I am focusing on helping my team have the best season that we can have and achieve our team goals. Please refer any questions about my recruitment to my head coach. I’m not sure when I’ll make a final announcement, but when I have no doubts at all about where I’m going, I’ll let everyone know.

This edition of UGA really needs to show up for each game with the rugged mindset that they are going to win AND dominate all phases of the game(s) to win. Things do happen along the way, however.
If UGA can roll into the SEC CG as East Champ and play LSU or Alabama and lose BUT end up rated top 5 or 6, 7 and WIN a very, very nice bowl, then it will be a very good to great season for UGA to finish say, #8 or #9.
Now, to roll into the SEC CG and WIN IT and then play ( possibly still with one loss) for the NC that would follow the SEC CG ……………..then that too is a fabulous year ……win or lose the NC game. Possibly UGA with this scenario finishes ranked #4 after the bowls. THIS MIGHT BE UGA’s BEST SCENARIO.
To end up around 9-3 and play in the Outback Bowl again ranked #15 with a winning bowl shot at ending up around #10? …………would not be good for anyone.

The media and pre-season rankings drive the expectations. Georgia fans, myself included, think they’ll have a good team because Georgia is highly rated by the likes of Lindy’s, Phil Steele, and now these oddsmakers. Don’t blame the fans for believing.
That said, I’m a big believer in O-Line, and this one is very raw. I can see another 10 win season but I don’t expect this O-Line to survive an SEC slate. Blowing Tech off the ball shouldn’t be a probem though.

Richt got off to a good start and came crashing down hard when the SEC really started to improve. Even when his teams finished really high they didn’t accomplish much. In the last 4 years he is 2-14 against teams that finished ranked and 14-18 against teams with winning records. Well good to see that the UGA players are giving the coming “Dream” season the same standard of focus and attention to which the UGA nation has come to expect of them. How many suspension are we up to now??
Good to know that UGA has once again claimed another preseason MNC to add to it long line of inflated, overblown expectations. What is this for UGA…5 ot 6 to add to the trophy case…YEAH!!!!

The success of this team will fall
mainly on the shoulders of Richt
and Murray. Richt needs to “coach
this team up” and refuse to accept
mediocrity. Murray needs to cut down
on his turnovers at critical times.
If they do that, the team can win the
SEC championship.

Everyone Knows that the state of Georgia is Overflowing with High School talent.
Everyone Knows that Mark Richt and UGA get some great talent across the south.
Everyone knows that with the last years schedule and this years schedule UGA should be the favorite in every game with all that talent.
However.
Not Everyone understands that UGA is rebuilding an Offensive Line that will not be as good as last years OL which was not very good, anyone who thinks they are please throw out the games UGA won and look at the games they lost and count the hurries, the sacks the negative yard rushes and how they folded against athletes who probably not as highly recruited as they were.
Secondly, with the suspensions at the beginning of the year UGA will see some blown coverages from just the fact of not playing those first two games and maybe players trying to make big plays that are just not there.
Harold is right, other dominant coaches around the league would have won a BCS title with all that first and second round talent that has walked through the tunnel in Athens.

Which team in the SEC has improved after winning the division the following year?Only 2008-2009 bama and florida have repeated as division champs so Georgia joins a group of every other team thats won a division title except those 2 teams in those 2 seasons since Richt arrived.

There are still too many “ifs” and “issues” left from last seasons performance to make a jump or claim for a NC this early for the dawgs. many of us would love to see it come true but there are too many ghosts from the past that haunt us and heard all this before only to be deflated w/dissappointing losses that blew chances for titles right out the door. They have to prove it on the field and in the coaches box and on the sidelines. They do have talented players but when stacked up against an LSU or AL they don’t compare at least not yet. Their offense is dated and in order to work requires a dominating Oline which has been missing for years. AL doesn’t do anything on offense out of the ordinary but their players and especially their coaching staff can overwhelm their opponents w/just good tough playing which was visibly absent in all of GA’s losses last season. Those losses speak volumes to the weakness of this GA team. We all know what they are and to expect these to be corrected in an off season (one after another season I might add) makes it difficult to accept anything different and only an apparent miracle will change the outcome. I don’t care what their schedule is history proves the dawgs will have a hic cup or two that will douse the dreams of a NC again and again. Blame will be flying all over the place again that only the folks in Muddville know too well how it feels to have high expectations replaced by embarrassment and anger. Hope I’m wrong but will believe it when I see the NC banner hanging from Sandford Stadium and GA’s best players stay home and not go to AL.

Kamc, we will loose one of those three. Probably Florida. They will have a nasty defense this year. SC should not have beat us last year, doubt they will repeat. Not sure Missouri has a great game. They lost to ASU, K State, OSU, Baylor, and OU. Some of those are good team. You could be honest and admit like Georgia fans you are just guessing. Dawgs could run the table to the dome with their tallent or fall flat and loose 4 or five games. No way to know until they are walking off the field and each game is over. I do know the folks comparing us to 2008 and reminding us how bad that went seem to forget the number of starters who were injured that year before we even played our first game. That team at full strength would have been nasty. Lets put it this way, right now I would rather be us than any other SEC east team. Florida may improve a lot but I don’t expect anyone else we are playing to be better than last year.

If there was a stat for leaving time and timeouts on the clock, Richt would own it. As long as he lacks the killer instinct, he will find a way to lose the big games.
IMO Mizzou is going to come ready to fight and we won’t have to worry about the “pressure.” Hope I’m wrong about that, but I’m right about Richt and as nice as he is, that is also his downfall.

Gary _ It won’t be Florida. They don’t have a QB and the offensive line won’t match up with UGA. South Carolina will be the toughest game in the regular season but UGA won’t make as many dumb mistakes as they did last year and their new guy won’t miss14 field goals like Walsh did last year. UGA by 10 over Florida and by 7 over the Game Crocks. Mizzou doesn’t have the “D” to stay with UGA’s receivers. Their starting QB is recovering from surgery. It’s the year of the DAWG.

This season has possibilities, but we have had possibilities before. We still have the summer to go and already have suspensions for some and others yet to be decided upon. Ga always under performs when expectations are high. I’m still concerned about the OLine. It has never been properly recruited for or so it seems.
Ga goes 10-2 but fails to make it to Dome. SC beats us and one other SEC team. We technically tie for East but losing head to head with SC gives them the title and we watch on TV.

Coming off two consecutive embarrassing losses to end the season, this says more about the schedule than the team. LSU and Boise St. throttled UGA last year. The only reason for this optimism is because neither one is on the schedule in 2012. What do the oddsmakers say about UGA vs. LSU or Bama in Atlanta? UGA vs. Southern Cal. in January? That’s what I thought………

I wouldn’t get upset with the oddsmakers. They change their opinions with the wind. This season is still to be determined. All this attention just shows that the Dawgs appear to have their strongest team in many years. We had a lot of offensive talent in 07/08, but this year’s D could be one of our best ever. The O is yet to be determined. The position players look to be as strong as I can remember. But, without a good line, they can be neutralized. If the line matures into a solid SEC unit, the Dawgs will be very, very hard to beat imho.

Dawgs should be pretty good this year. I would guess 10-2 or 9-3 would be their record after the regular season. I think Phil Steele has them picked about 8th to begin the year. Of course, he also has my Gators picked #10. That is a serious stretch in my opinion.

Gators should have a great D, too, Beast. Half of the D was 5-star talent when they were recruited, and they have some experience now. The big unknown is the offense. If they mature into a great O under their superb new OC, they will be very, very hard to beat, too. The East is likely to be a much tougher neighborhood this year. SC is hard to beat by anybody when Lattimore is healthy.

Here is how I see UGA season going.
Buffalo- UGA Wins in a blowout and UGA fans hoop and holler how good their defense is even without 4 starters.
Missour- Close Win or Close Loss and the UGA nation will say once we get our starters back we will be even better.
Florida Atlantic- Blow out Win and the Dawg Fans Barking while Murray throws for 300 plus and RB’s get over 200
Vanderbilt- Closer game than UGA fans like and UGA wins late…The Offense does not look as good and fans start calling out BoBo.
Tennessee- Closer game as Dooley needs to win this game but comes up short…higher scoring game than UGA fans expected.
South Carolina- USC fans are rowdy and UGA comes out flat while USC puts up points with ground game and in the air. USC hangs on and wins. UGA fans blame Bobo and Richt and the fans at home are not happy and now hope the tougher USC schedule gives them a chance in the East.
Kentucky- after week off to recover from USC..UGA comes out on fire and blows out a weak offensive Wildcat team.
Florida- in Jacksonville- Muschamp has focuse attention on this game and UGA’s running game is non existent. Murray makes a couple of errors and this is a close game down to wire. Either team winning…too close to call. Fans complain about BoBo and his play calling and Richt says he will take more of a role in play calling to soothe the fans feelings.
Ole Miss- Blowout win and Richt is the hero for his involvement in play calling. The Bulldawg Nation is semi happy while watching USC play tough opponents.
Auburn- closer game than most fans imagined, the Auburn Tigers make it close, and this is a toss up game. UGA fans grow angry.
Ga. Southern and the option play havoc on UGA and but sets them up for Tech the next week. UGA wins.
Ga Tech- GT regresses all season and Al’s defense at GT is not very good. UGA blows out Tech.
UGA fans are happy and “own their rivals one more year” while the core fans are not happy with all the close games and losses in a season they should have gone 12-0.

CHDawg,
My opinion is the Gators are another year away from playing for the SEC. I guess it could happen this year, but we’d have to have some major improvement from the QB’s, WR’s, RB’s and OL. While I think we’ll be much improved in several positions, I also think it’s silly to expect all of them to suddenly be great. We’ll find out one way or the other in a few months.

Murray is forced out of games this year, Does Richt remove the redshirt from Mason( The UGA golden boy backup) or does he risk not keep LeMay happy and bringing him in? For those who want CMR replaced – who would you replace him with??? UGA can always go back to the 90’s where we were indeed mediocre. There are only a handful of coaches that are PROVEN in college football – & many of them come with baggage. I, for one, do not place winning above everything else. I’ve said it many times, if I had a kid that wanted to play football, I would hope that he would choose UGA because of CMR!!!

The schedule and the experience are all in the Dawgs’ favor. This may be Richt’s best and last shot to get a national championship–but not a gimme. It never is in the SEC. They should run the table with that schedule. They have nine starters returning on defense as well as experienced people at all the skill positions on offense. If they do not get to the SEC championship game undefeated, it will be an epic fail in my eyes. Beating Bama or LSU once we get there is another story. Go Dawgs!!

Hey, doofus, has UF ever lost a SECCG? How about a bowl game? Badly? I can think of some ugly games where your genius got pounded when they were the favorite – remember Notre Dame, Nebraska?
UGA was not very good last season, not at all. That fact should give you pause . . .

uga is favored over south carolina because uga has a batter team and has more talent over all. defense , offense and maybe even special teams too..
connor shaw is a back up qb who cant pass under pressure. uga has the edge there…wide receiver uga has the edge..running back is more of a draw now since lattermore will be having to try and recover from a knee injury. defense is a no brainer..uga has the edge there to at just about every spot. the o-line might be a draw as well although uga will have a bit more talent..i really havent put much thought into the south carolina game as they will be starting connor shaw and most likely rely on marcus to move the ball because if they want connor to last the whole game they better not ask him to run against uga,,his little body will get messed up..this is the first time in a long time that uga will have this good a defense coming back while at the same time having a ton of quality experience on offense at the qb position a long with some really good running backs..coach richt will be fine and this hot seat talk is just crap as the powers to be at UGA will give him a brand new contract after this year when he at least will have a shot of winning the title.. even during the stafford and moreno days the defense was not this good. i dont think they had this many jrs or srs on defense in like 6 years which makes a big difference.just look at the past winners from the sec…all the teams had jrs and srs at just about every spot on defense.

Nobody, that’s who. And don’t blame conspiracies and politics for keeping UGA out of the Big Game in those years.
Richt kept us out by losing games we shouldn’t have lost. UF the first two years, then UT and SC in ‘07 were all underdogs to UGA.

fla has pretty much more talent every year than uga…2007 defense was not very good..nothihg like it is now…moreno and stafford couldnt play defense…2002 and 2005 teams were very good and if the sec had as much clout back then as it does now then uga and richt would have most likely won 2 or at least 1 NC those years,,13-1 sec team now would never be kept out of the NC game..now the tide has turn once again in UGA favor with the all the guys coming back on defense , and an experienced and really good qb coming back with really good receivers and running backs to help out..the O-line will be fine even better next year so i expect uga to start showing up to play in more title games the next 4 or 5 years with all the talent and finally experience building up at uga.

_____——————————————————————————————————–
I really have to agree with most of this! This has been the pattern and with all of the late season drama, off season problems and lack of discipline, same coaches and play calling, the Mark Richt MO has not changed the past 6 years.
As a very old dawg fan, I can say that my hope are much greater than my expectations based on the past 6 years of play.

I don’t get Bill’s comment about” disturbing tendency to falter”. You would think with comments like that that he is not really a UGA guy. Yea, in 2008 we were picked by a few publications to be #1 but polls dropped us to #2 or 3 after the first game even though we won it. I don’t remember that happening to often. In 2008 there was high expectations but if everyone remembers we had a ton of injuries that year to key players. In a lot of the years under CMR the team was not expected to do that well but did. Does 2007 come to mind? People dwell to much on that 2008 season and act like UGA and CMR fails all the time because of that one season. Not a fair assessment.

What’s great is that all of the kids that CTG is recruiting can go play for him or one of his greatest mentors.(Saban) One school plays/wins National Titles, the other usually gets their tail kicked by a Big 10 school in a non-BCS Bowl.

I see that SSIgator is still taking the dawg blogger’s lunch money from them.
In other news Georgia’s top recruit, a 5 star tailback, decommitted from the dawgs after a weekend visit to Bama. No question about it- Saban Rules over Richt with an iron fist. I actually feel sorry for a lesser coach like Richt having to go up against a juggernaut like Saban. I mean really. What the hell can the man say to a recruit when going head to head against Saban? What does he say?- Don’t go there because they win championships. Don’t get there because they physically develop players for the pros- evidenced by more 1st rounders the last 2 years than anyone. Don’t go there because its a disciplined, well run program where you don’t have time for the silly legal trouble that gets most dawg players in jail. Don’t go there because of the storied tradition and all them national championships and sec championships. Don’t go there because its a dominant program that just lines up and whups people’s asses.
What does he say to a recruit? Come here where we haven’t won a championship in 32 years? Come here where players are constantly getting in trouble due to a lack of discipline. Come here so that you can play in a crappy bowl game and lose to UCF. Come here so that you can lose to a middling Big 10 team in embarrassing fashion in a bowl game. Come here where you can be the 5th best team in the SEC behind the big 3 in the west and Carolina in the east. Come here where our biggest rival has owned us 19 of the last 22 games. Come here where lately we don’t send anywhere near the number of 1st round draft choices as the big boys over at Bama.
If you’re Mark Richt what advantage can you seriously talk about to a recruit to convince him to come to UGA over Alabama? Pretty much nothing.

Actually Saban is 3-2 against Mark Richt. This article proves it.
Richt is 3-1 against Alabama but that’s because 2 of those wins came in the early 2000s against probation weakened Mike Shula Alabama teams. And of course he did beat Saban in Saban’s inaugural transition year at Alabama when Bama went 7-6. Beating Shula twice and Saban in his first year at Bama?- not impressed.

CTG’s D will whimper down to the good teams on the schedule, like last season, and also like last season, will build up impressive stats against the have nots. Same for AM and his overrated QB self. Not every good program and good coach are going to have the good fortune to win a game called the ‘title’. When a rival does this and more than once it makes the goal look easier than it is. Even the most controlling coaches do not have total mind and body control over their players. Celebrate every victory because every time two teams step on the field one is going to get more points than the other. If you think another person in another year could be sure to do it you are probably not considering everything that would have to line up. Will it happen someday?,maybe, but hundreds of other programs are busting their backside to get it done also. Do you win it all in your daily tasks every day, month, year? probably not. Do you even go out and seek the toughest competitors in your field in the nation to compete against where everyone gets a fairly equal starting position ? probably not. So where does this attitude come from that winning a heck of a lot of games against the best is just not satisfying for you? I think it is interesting to watch the people who put their money where their mouths are, Vegas for example. These people are probably more often far better advised and studied than the average blogger. They are trying to tell you that even if you win you are not that far ahead of the pack here and a lot of luck is going to be needed. It could go well this year or it might not go as hoped (for every fan of every team). You are banking on 2,3, and 4 point margins, come on wake up.

Old Dawg said this………..‘Bama got lucky and landed the premier coach, pure and simple.
I agree 100% with his statement. Nick was looking for a job back in college and Bama just happened to have a spot. The BOT at Bama had hired everyone except Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Green Jeans ( I loved those guys) to coach our beloved Tide only to fall on our collective azz year after year. Sometime you better get lucky and boy did Alabama with Nick Saban. If the man has good health he should win maybe 2 more NC before he takes it to the lake. The thing that makes Nick Saban so successful is his fear of failure. He understands he’s not the sharpest saw in the drawer but he understands he can and will outwork most of the competition and he hires staff that will do the same. In addition he pays folks very well for those long hours for he understands they will move on to better things going forward and that is great in his eyes.

Wilson, I think you are on the money regarding Saban. I usually have the opposite reaction of opposing coaches as most fellow Bulldog fans – I even admired Spurrier’s coaching (not his petty, smirking persona) as well as Myer’s. I am the same about Saban. I think he outworks his fellow coaches and he demands excellence from his assistants, directly contrary to Richt, who plugged in buddies to important positions in his program, and stuck with them when it was apparent to everybody, that they pretty much stunk at their jobs.
I was hoping Richt would take this new contract, hire some pros to help with the offense, the O-line, and special teams, and go lights out to win a Title – but typically, he doesn’t see the need for new and improved assistants, as well as new and improved offensive schemes and special teams.

Why do you bother running a story like this? The Dawgs would be etter served to stay as far under the radar for as long as possible. The part about rebuilding the offensive line, wow! I don’t know about you but I don’t think the offensive line last year was anything special. The pass rush from good teams we played last year ran through and by the O-line like they weren’t there. I hope they are a lot better this year.

The O-line wasn’t special, Rodster. But 3 of the 5 O-linemen got drafted. So why wasn’t it special?

I don’t know why it wasn’t special, but obviously getting individuals drafted by the NFL is not a good metric for team success. Michigan State and Boise State didn’t play for anything big at the end of the season bt they absolutely man-handled us upfront when we were on offense. (Boise State did as well when they were on offense.)

One would think that having players in your team’s lineup that are deemed pros by the NFL, would have to be a good thing.
We won 21 games in ‘07 and ‘08 with that bunch of future high-pick NFL players, then went 8-5 the first year without them (’09).
It could be as simple as Richt has maybe never had a really good, technical O-line coach. It seems every year, there are issues there.

I think it is a combination of the type of kid recruited, the skill set they are taught, the S&C program and most importantly, DIET.
We need OL that are big and strong enough to pull and run down and PLOW a DE or LB on a sweep. There is a reason we never ran sweeps to Bean’s side last year. He was too big and had no lateral mobility.
That’s why a kid like Theus should be the prototype for UGA OT’s.

Almost 3 sacks per game, 96th ranked for starters.
http://www.sports-ratings.com/college_football/sacks-allowed.html
0.4 turnovers per game

rushing ranking: 37 in all Div. 1
passing ranking 26 in ll Div 1
Overall offensive 49 ranking in Div. 1 adjusted vs Div 1 opponents.
NFL talent vs OL performance means very poor coaching in Athens vs Wins. Which one counts?

I don’t know what to say about Nancy’s outburst today. She is usually more conservative in her comments, ie; Mark Richt is such a nice man, well at least we played hard, boy this is really good Kool-Aid, etc. Every once in a while though she becomes rather cranky. I think it is when her Sony BetaMax machine goes on the fritz and she can’t watch her 1980 UGA football tape of the Sugar Bowl game. It just puts her all out of sorts.

Anything more than 2 loses will mean hot seat!! But also who those loses are as well..lose to Tech and the chickens..and its smoking hot..lose to chickens and gators and tech..and its new coach!! Love CMR!!….and theres always a but… We need to have a focused team every game..That auburn game last year was it..Get up for every game and the Dawgs will be back at the Dome..Special teams improve and Murray stops trying to “make stuff..when there’s not stuff there” And Dawgs will be SEC champs..and on there way to BCS..GO DAWGS!!!
No pressure if you EXPECT to win!

So what are Mark Richt and Aaron Murray going to be doing in early December when some other team is preparing for the SEC champ game?
HOP

It all comes down to the offense and the very ineffective arron murray who is 2-10 against top 25 teams.
uga must won the big games ,remember we have lost our last two games last year and murray played horrible.
uga should be competing for a national championship but murray gets way too overwhelmed with keeping his cool in high profile games.
it should be an interesting year and it will show if mark richt can take uga to the next level.

@Joey,
Jamarcus Russell got drafted, so they don’t bat 1000, you know. We may get a few drafted, but as a unit the facts are hard to handle….Boise State, LSU, and Michigan State man handled us up front…their d-lines whooped up on our o-line. This is not a debatable point for blogers and posters to argue…this is just a fact!

Why would a bad year against expectations put Richt on the hot seat? Been here, done this before and he’s still here and making more money that even. What makes 2012 any different??

When I saw the quote ”a lot of pressure on us” my first thought was, please don’t let that be something Richt said. He displayed an obvious fear of high expectations before the 2008 season. He and the team just didn’t have the mindset and fortitude to live with the #1 ranking.
I don’t know if Richt is now big enough for greatness, we’ll find out.

Hope for the best and expect the worst. Yes IMHO Georgia should have won 3 national Titles under Richt already but have none. What disturbs me most is his apparent lack of learning from his mistakes. To win National Championships the first thing is you have to have a team that is well disciplined and conditioned, next a great defense with coaches who not only know the X’s and O’s but know how to motivate players to be better than they are. Also a head coach who recognizes his weaknesses and works on them instead of being hard headed and continuing to do the same things i.e. poor offensive play calling, poor special teams, under performing offensive line play, poor decision making by the QB etc.
