Georgia's schedule has the Dawgs in early conversations about the BCS championship. (Associated Press)
So far, Mark Richt’s 2012 Dawgs are having a terrific silly season, that time of summer when all teams are undefeated and fans and prognosticators alike can go crazy with predictions.
Here’s a headline on the handicapping site Beyond the Bets sure to quicken a UGA fan’s pulse a beat or two: Who will win 2013 BCS national title? Our pick: the Georgia Bulldogs, currently a 19/1 long shot
At 19-to-1, Georgia has the seventh-best odds to win the national championship. Here are the reasons why BTB likes the Dawgs to do so: 1. They’re good. 2. Schedule 3. They can afford to lose a game.
Under the first reason, the site notes that quarterback Aaron Murray heads up a bunch of returning starters, the passing game should be among the nation’s best and “Georgia should finally have a running game to complement it.” Also, the defense, which returns 20 of 22 players on its depth chart, “will again be dominant and could be the best in the conference.”
They do note that “the offensive line will be the major concern, as the Bulldogs must replace both tackles and add depth along the interior. Nonetheless, they should have no trouble improving upon last year’s 10-win season.”
One of the main reasons why, BTB says, is the schedule, with Georgia again avoiding Alabama, LSU and Arkansas during the regular season. Says BTB: “Georgia will play seven games at home, four on the road and one — the annual matchup against Florida on Oct. 27 — at a neutral field. That’s as manageable a schedule as any you’ll find, particularly when you consider that they’ll be favored in three of the four road games — at Kentucky, Missouri and Auburn.”
BTB notes that the toughest game on Georgia’s schedule will come against South Carolina, which is the only game in which the Las Vegas oddsmakers haven’t installed the Dogs as a point-spread favorite. (The Gamecocks are favored by 3.)
But that brings us to their third reason: “Georgia is one of the few teams in the country that has the potential to lose a game and still appear in the national championship. Assuming the Bulldogs open the season in the top 10 as expected, they’ll likely rise as high as fifth or sixth prior to their big swing game against South Carolina on Oct. 6. If the Bulldogs lose, they’ll have two full months to climb back into the top 5 of the polls and should still have a chance to earn a second straight SEC East crown. With a win over LSU or Alabama in the SEC championship, Georgia will be in position to play for the national title.”
To bolster their case for the Dawgs, the BTB folks cite Saturday Down South, which has picked Georgia as “the safe bet” to again win the SEC East, with South Carolina and Florida as “sucker bets” to do so, noting that “The Bulldogs are one of the most talented teams in the country. I put them on the same talent level as LSU and even slightly ahead of Alabama.”
SDS also cites the talent level and the schedule, saying, “This is a huge year for Richt’s legacy, and I think Georgia puts it together and wins the East — and maybe more — in what could be a special year for Georgia football.”
Is that enough to get you pumped up for fall, or do you think the oddsmakers are underestimating Georgia’s task in rebuilding the offensive line and repairing its dismal special teams play? How do you feel about the upcoming season?

If we get by Missouri with a win, it will be like we picked up 4 free agent starters for the remainder of the year. I also like that we have South Carolina in the middle of the year. It is going to be exciting to see how the year unfolds.

I certainly like the recognitions we are getting this offseason as opposed to the “hot seat” obsession which plagued us this time last year.
While there are a few nuckleheads on this team who will be sitting out a few early on, there are some REALLY good kids on this team, and I cannot wait to get it going this fall!

Could UGA win the East and not the SECCG and still be in the MNCG? Would anything less than a conference title satisfy Bulldog fans this season? I hope the Bulldogs one loss of the season is their last regular season game.

STOP JINXING US! Our biggest weakness as a program is we believe the press’s and our own fans’ BS, and we usually don’t have the stones to win on pride alone (a la Alabama – hurts to admit that). Richt should coach the kids on staying away from sites that talk about this cr@p and just focus on the first game. Kind of how Chris Peterson coaches. So here’s the reverse jinx – We will be lucky to win 6 games, Auburn will go undefeated, as will Florida and Tech. Whew.

While it would be great to believe that we could have this great of a year, we have:
1. An inexperienced offensive line with a recent heritage of under-performance and injuries,
2. A freshman kicker and punter that we hope will be reliable,
3. Coach Bobo’s mind-numbing play-calling once we have a lead, and our weak in-game offensive adjustments. Until Bobo shows that he is willing to coach 4 quarters of aggressive offense, we’ll continue to be one 4th-quarter drive away from losing a game that we shouldn’t.
4. The need to survive the next 3 months without any more key suspensions that could hurt us against Missouri’s offense.
…………….Still, GO DAWGS!

Nobody blew up or had the big head in 2008. They had won 4 games that year before losing (to one of the best team in the nation that year). Then won a few more before losing to the OTHER best team in the country. By then we had lost a considerable part of both lines and absolutely no depth at LB. 2008 was exactly what it was.

Not the same group of guys as 2008. The current players know full well that they looked like a bunch of idiots in the SEC Game, and the bowl. Receivers will catch the ball this time, and giving games away will be a distant memory. The Georgia Bulldogs have excellent leadership in 2012, from JJ on D to TK and Richard Samuel on O. That is correct, RS will be a big leader of this team this season, you could tell what RS is looking for by his little surprise entry in the spring game. He is pumped, and he and others will have this offense pumped and ready to run the ball. Everyone will be pleasantly surprised at the progress of Murray, and IC will be on fire. Take it to the bank boys, the Dawgs are back with a lot to prove. Don’t think for a moment that they don’t see all the bragging and putdowns by the likes of Bama fans and LSU fans. Would hate to be a D.A. Bama or LSU fan after the confetti falls in the GEORGIA DOME in early December 2012!

I got all this, but I think they are underestimating the O-line, special teams, and kicking game challenges. No team excels in all aspects of the game. This will all depend on the play of the special teams. The past few years UGA’s special teams have been lack luster (not talking about the long legged punts from Butler or FG’s from Walsh). I am talking about blocking punts, making sound tackles on kickoffs, kicking away from dangerous return guys (i.e. Honeybadger) and etc. Under Warren B. the Dawgs were sound on special teams. When he left for the NFL we became soft, out of place and poor decisions were made. Why? I would like to see CMR step up and take over the special teams. Let Bobo call the plays and CMR take on a role like Urban Meyer did at UF. During Meyer’s time at UF they had the best special teams a coach could want and it helped them win some big games to get to the National Champ game. The D is solid, the O has too many weapons if we can execute, but the special teams need to be 10x better than in 2011 to make 2012 a special year. Go Dawgs.

It always amazes me how accurate the betting services are, so there is reason to be optimistic.
I don’t think the special teams will have near the negative impact as it had in 2011. By moving the kick off up 5 yards most of the kick off’s will land in the end zone. It will be hard for a coach not to down it when they know they will start at the 25 yard line. The field goal kicker , Marshall Morgan is very accurate inside the 50 and will be more dependable than Walsh. But, the the biggest improvement will be the attitude of Crowell. If he had not missed a few games because of being hurt or discipline he would have easily rushed for more than 1000 yards. He is stronger now, has a much better team attitude and will be pushed by Marshall and Gurley.

The prognosticator in question certainly knows how to sell his publication, seeing as how UGA fans probably spend more on sports rags having to do with SEC football than anyone else. But, guess what? He’s wrong for 2 reasons:
1) UGA coaches have not shown the ability to instill discipline in their players
2) You can’t coach intelligence, no matter what level your talent is.
The best example of that is Aaron Murray’s inability to avoid bad decisions in big games.
Nobody’s going to win a football NC at UGA anytime soon.

A few comments about UGA:
1. Four different SEC teams have won the last six BCS championships.
2. UGA was not one of those teams.
3. During that period, UGA did not win the SEC championship.
4. Red panties.
In other words, UGA has sunk into total irrelevancy both regionally and nationally.
So why is UGA paying Mark Richt millions of dollars a year?
what?
June 6th, 2012
2:41 pm
these reasons make no sense. First you say that they have the advantage of not playing the big 3 in the West, which you must feel would be a loss somewhere, then say they just need to win the SECCG, which will most likely be against one of those 3. Are they good enough or not to beat them?

I think Belin was a pretty good hire, and could have been a good ST co-ordinator, but he was only here one year, so Not sure how much we can say HE was the difference. Dawgs did improve statistically during his year, so that’s fair. Probabaly some other factor involved though.
I wouldnt care to see Richt taking on the Meyer’s model. I have never been convinced that he was all that well served in doing that, and there were years under him, that they were no better than anyone else. It’s also fair to say in his best years, he had the horses to be pretty good on ST, no matter who was running it. I guess the point was that somebody needed to do it, so he did. Personally I don’t think thats a good role for a HC. If you look at all the coaches over the past few years with the top teams they all do it slightly differently. For Meyer, that was his way.

dbc,
if UGA goes undefeated and wins the SECCG then they will be playing for the National Championship. I don’t care if they win every game by 1 point. At this point any SEC champ that is undefeated will be playing for the national championship. SEC has earned that right.
With that being said I’m not sure UGA will go undefeated. Yes they are returning a bunch of starters and are oozing with talent, but the team with the best players doesn’t always win the game. I’m not sold they have the mental focus to rise up against better teams. After all it didn’t happen once in 2011 where the rose up to win a game. You could make the case for just the opposite that UGA actually found ways to lose (see USC and MichSt). That has to change for there to be any talk of a MNC.

Crowell has apparently woken, Kicking game couldn’t get worse along with the previous O-Line play and our receiving core looks like they want to play some bal this time around. But I agree it’s better to be in the conversation, than not. And the story said not a thing that wasn’t spot on despite the trolls just not liking it.

Listen, the oddsmakers are right: Fantastic talent, easy schedule, etc. What they are not factoring in, however, is the incompetent coaching and total lack of discipline and leadership on the team. Until the shepard leads, sheep will mill around aimlessly. Richt and Bobo could not lead themselves out of bed in the morning, much less lead their talented team to any meaningful championships.
All the blind homers and apologists for Richt and Bobo have sealed our fate. UGA will continue to underperform and approach mediocrity during a good season in spite of all the talent and favorable schedules because our coaching is LOUSY.

Snoop is wondering how Markt Wrecked is doing in his graduate level study of the game of football. Remember, McGarrity relieved him of all his administrative duties so that he could devote his full energy on this endeavor. His grades to date aren’t too good. Mr Peterson taught him his first course first game of last season. He flunked that class. Next, Mr Spurrier schooled him as South Carolina lost their game in Athens in every category except the score. Imagine that… Another F for Richt. Then, remember LSU. Richt did OK on the midterm, but Dr Miles inidicated that he layed an egg during the final exam. Finally, Richt took an easy course in Big Ten football over the holidays, but unfortunately he failed that course too.
I am seeing that Richt will continue the trend by flunking two of his first three classes next year. Then, he will pass all the easy stuff until the next challenging test, Florida.
I do not think that he will ever get that graduate degree in the game of football. Do you?

And worst of all, the Dawg fans…who have always been pretty knowledgeable fans…got running our mouths and talking all kinds of smack. Ended up sounding EXACTLY like that damn FSU and Miami scum.
Pay not attention to these preseason rankings, guys. Keep on working out and practicing hard…let’s go into the season with a chip on our shoulder.
And have mercy, Coach Richt…don’t get all fixated on uniforms or jersey colors or helmet designs or “Black/Red out the stadium!” stuff this season. Let’s just make sure the team is ready to play hard all four quarters in every game this year…and we’ll do fine.

I think the talent we have on the O-line will be fine. It will be more athletic than last year. Last year they were just big ole slugs. Anybody a RT will be an improvement over Bean Anderson. I suspect we’ll be running the ball a lot to start the season. It is easier for young linemen to run block than pass block. Also, I saw some comments saying if we can get by Missouri. UGA should beat Missouri by at least 2 TD’s. That defense ranked 61st last year. They’re are not going to stop our offense. Also, everyone is worried about the secondary against Missouri. They will have to have time to exploit that. With our front 7 that’s going to be hard.

Good point Alex,
Georgias number one issue is not recruiting enough great Linemen. You can say whatever you want about coaching decisions, arrests , and all that, but a lack of a great O-line has been one of the biggest reasons of Georgia’s recent struggles on Offense.

Dawgs can and should go undefeated. Junkyard Defense won’t give up much of anything. Offense has always scored 30 or more points under CMR. Running game will be as good as any team in America next year. The running backs will do lots of damage. That makes passing game easier. l do agree Dawgs special teams need to do their job. Our schedule is about as easy as it could be for an SEC Team, the D should be strong but Murray still has no pass rush protection from the O Line, I’m still waiting for a bull of a fullback to block for a tailback who doesn’t fall at the first touch or takes himself out of a game……………………………….and then there’s Bobo and Richt………..
I’d love to see The Dawgs win The SEC and play and win The BCS but I think the odds are alot longer than 17 to 1.

I don’t know. Strange rationale at work here. UGA loads up on wins by playing a weak schedule. Loses to SC, but wins East because SC has tougher schedule. So the team that whips us is in turn beat by better teams we don’t play. All that means we’ll end up in the NC game. Ain’t life wonderful!

Similar to the off season when SI picked us pre-season number one. Stafford and Moreno on the cover. The SEC writers got it right and picked Florida instead. One difference in our favor this year is our defense now is much better than that defense, but the OL issues remain. Lack of experience and depth. Giving Murray time and opening holes for our deep RB core will be the key to the season. And, as always, avoiding injuries.

This happens every few years with Richt. The team overacheives a little bit one season and returns alot of starters. Then they are hyped for months and months only to have disappointing season. You can’t teach heart and hunger which are two things UGA players talk about but never back up. My prediction: UGA loses 3 games and Richt’s seat is a little warm because of the disappointing season with a weak schedule. People forget that UGA lost to EVERY decent team they played. Give me one game in 3 years where UGA has beaten a team ranked higher than them. I can’t really think of one.

UGA has to go throught the summer without losing key players or seeing some key men split. It is a totally different attitude among these young men vs when I attended UGA. Time will tell.
So called easy schedule or not ……………………UGA must win out to really impress me or lose only one game and go all the way to the SECG and win and let them chips fall where they may.
I see a 10-2 thing with UGA and that is it. Capital One Bowl or maybe Cotton. If they end up in Janaury 13 around # 5 or 6 or 7, that is as good as we can expect at UGA with our drug enforcement policy and academics. We are not Harvard but for sure we are not UT or LSU or Alabama or Auburn and that is that.

Headline reads “Oddsmaker likes Dawgs to win SEC East … and BCS!”. Having the seventh best odds to win the BCS is not having the odds makers “like” you. The odds makers “like” you behind 6 other teams. Unless I’m misinformed and the BCS is pitting #1 vs. #7 this year, I would tone down the enthusiasm once again, UGA fans. By now, I would hope you would’ve learned that failing to live up to unreasonable expectations is more destructive than reaching achievable goals, like winning the SEC East.

How is an oddmaker picking the Dawgs? Isn’t it more accurate to say that a betting website is picking the Dawgs, depite the odds (determined by some other actual “oddsmaker”). Or is this guy placing the odds at 19-1 for his pick to win it? “This is my choice, But I am placing the mathematically probability that I am wrong fairly high” That doesn;t make sense.
OR, Did he also pick the 15-1 odds team, and pick the 5-1 team? Did he pose the reasons why he is picking literally 10 or so that “could”? thats not how I read it.

I don’t like the fact that a lot of fans and therefore a lot of the players think that we will have any cakewalks or that we have a cupcake schedule. When the team and coaches constantly hear how easy another team should be , that’s when the game ends up being lost or barely won. Yes we have a few games with division 2 teams but these teams are very good and can be lost but I will agree very unlikely.
What I want the players and fans to change is their mindset that every game is not a serious part of the entire season. I want Richt to play hard for the entire game. How many times have we been killing a team at half time to barely win or even lose because we took the pressure off and the starters could get their intensity back up. If Richt and the players will do that one thing at the end of the season they won’t have any regrets for letting one or two get away. They will know they gave it their all and if we get beat then so be it and give the other team credit for being better.

Pretty strong Kool-Aid they’re serving in Athens and Atlanta these days. All these rosie-eyed prognosticators are betting on skating through a weak schedule (they obviously believe USC, UF and AU will be weak) and getting up for the SECCG. Consider this. That “awesome” defense you’re counting on stopped nobody last year, and that was with Boykin and Rambo, who were grossly overrated. Watch Hilliard run over Boykin, Mathieu fake Rambo out of his jock and Blue run past both of them in last years SECCG for reference. Further, Richt has never embraced the holy grail of SEC football: running the ball. Your OL is weak and you don’t have enough quality RBs.

I think we have purged most of the bad kids which is important. We still have another year with a President who thinks catching college kids acting like college kids makes him a hero so there is always that pitfall but I certainly like our chances at coming close to running the table i.e. winning all of our games.
If we win at Mizou in what will arguably be one of if not the biggest games in Mizou’s history Georgia will have a huge boost in confidence and momentum. As long as they don’t look past anyone and play close to their level of ability we should easily be in the SEC Championship game. Win there and the Dawgs will get a chance to prove good guys do win it all sometimes.

I can’t understand why you keep wanting to put words in peoples mouth. WHO has ever said Richt has changed overnite? Any logical person knows its been a maturation over the years. I’m not sure who all these folks are that have said anything different. For example, even the failures of 2008, have lead to some changes since, not overnite, but over time.
As far as the Alabama game. Would it not be a lot more interesting to talk about what actually happened in the game? ie, we could not protect that left side with our freshman 3rd string line over there, taking our passing game out, allowing them to load up and stop Moreno. Also we had no answer on defensive pressure as our best interior and both out or best outside D-linemen weren’t playing, so those short passes were just thier to sit back and pop one after another.
NOW, if you want to blame “coaching” for not having a deeper Oline in August.(which was never a surprise and every writer had said was going to be our weakness, then it got dramatically worse from injuries)..sure, thats right. Or not having more versitile cross trained DL, or any number of actual tangible thing going into that season, thats fine. Its thier job. Thats fair. But its pretty vague to just say that game came down to “inept coaching”. I actualy thought they did a decent job responding and adjusting in the second half. The fact is: 08′ Bama was one of the best team in the nation and we were FAR from it, by the time that game rolled around. Should we have got so far down by halftime…….no. Should Bama have blown such a huge lead to Au in one half a couple years ago…..No. Was that just inept coaching? Or how about Bama’s bowl game in 2008. Inept coaching?
And, is it really hurting your feeling so much that some of these Georgia Football fans are going into this season believing that we have a pretty good team, and talking about it as if they expect to have a fine year? Why must every single post be 100% negative and only about just the one aspect of the team, the name of the head coach and how terrible he is? The article was about a solid returing defense, and sure to be potent passing game, and an anticipated improved running game. Thats what, for the life of you, people are talking about, not some imagined overnite transformation.

Altamahadawg…don’t expect reasoned and logical posts on these blogs.
Good lord folks, it’s only June and it’s only one betting outfit. Even the ESPN guys call their list the “way to early top 25″, or some such. Some read the betting site’s article and call Dawg fans delusional. Don’t assume that I’m (or any fan is) delusional over someone else’s betting line or Top 25 ranking.
Altamaha…right on about 2008; some people just look at the record and not what actually transpired. As I recall it was also one of the better coaching jobs on a make-shift OL ever.
“Richt has no concept of the running game.” As I recall, last year he and Bobo tried a LOT of players at RB. Lord, if I read one more time about how stupid Bobo is for running up the middle…I’mo ’splode. Half the time the RB was met in the backfield or stuffed at the line. Murray had to scramble or was sacked WAY too often. That’s the OL; not Bobo and not CMR.
OK, one betting outfit ‘kinda’ picks the Bulldogs…in June. Interesting reading, but that’s about it. Nothing to get in an uproar over. But of course about any article on the Dawgs will get a rise outa some people.

In 2007 the coaches let the players drink the koolaid, and lost games where the DAWGS were clearly the better team, but were out coached and outplayed. It is time that the rubber meets the road. The great players are in place. if they are coached well they have a chance for a special season. If you have the talent to win a title and you don’t, look no further than the coaching staff! Go Dawgs!

Lost to all 4 teams of any significance last year, but this year we’ll win the National Championship?
Sure, Richt is capable of that.

Dreaming. Dreaming.Dawgs should do well but NC? They’ll have to get by SC, AU and UF, not exactly cake walks. Just because you have 5 star running backs does not mean that you will have a running game. The OL has had a running aversion for the past 3-5 years with some decent backs. How well the OL plays will determine the season.

No BCS title with Richt as coach. Georgia only wins East & Sec Titles when nobody else wants them.
Q…Who were the last SEC Champs to not win a National Title?
Georgia is the only major Div 1 Football power with a Div 2 caliber coach. Talent alone has carried UGA. Grantham helps but we still need a head coach.
Garry Patterson please sit tight!!!

Not going to happen..CMR teams take to long to get it going when the season begins. Unprepared. Every one knows what happens when Uga gets to much hype. I see the dawgs losing 5 games, due to suspensions and a weak OL

Wouldn’t put my bet on ga tech since ga has won 10 of 11 of their last meetings. It’s not even really a rivalry anymore, just an easy last game win for Mark Richt. You nerds over there at ga tech shoul get that.

Good point “Techsucks33″. The dawgs also lead the series in professors posing as transvestite prostitutes. Another bulldog point of pride!

Sigh.
1) A bad OL from 2011 loses 3 starters for the 2012 season. So much for the offense.
2) A squirrely QB that has yet to perform under pressure.
3) No proven RB.
4) One true weapon at WR, and he’ll be playing CB to start the season.
5) A D that looked great against really bad opponents, but mailed it in against legitimate opposition.
Let’s face it, folks. UGA’s “10-win” season last year was a fluke of scheduling, not an indicator of UGA’s quality as a team. I frankly can’t recall any team in my 40+ years as a UGA fan that had so much hype coming down on so little actual potential.
