"Look at me!" (Associated Press)
It’s obvious why Steve Spurrier wants to change the way division champions are determined in the SEC: Last year his team won all its games against teams from the East but lost a couple to the West, which allowed Georgia, which lost to South Carolina but beat all its Western opponents, to take the Eastern division.
Generally, South Carolina under Spurrier fares better against its Eastern Division brethren than it does against teams from the SEC West. So Spurrier only wants to count games against the East in determining the division winner.
For some strange reason, LSU’s Les Miles supports that view, saying, “I’m for the Western Division deciding the Western Division champion and the Eastern Division deciding the Eastern Division champion.” Apparently it comes down to the fact that Miles doesn’t like the fact that LSU plays Florida every year while Alabama plays Tennessee. Or something like that. It’s hard to tell with the Hat.
Georgia’s Mark Richt thinks Spurrier’s plan is self-serving and silly, though he’s too much of a gentleman to come right out and say that. He’s pointed out that as the world turns, so does the SEC schedule, and what favors Spurrier and South Carolina this season might not work in their favor in the future. But just tell him the rules up front, Richt says, and he’ll play by them — the implication being that Spurrier should shut up and do the same.
Other SEC coaches, including Florida’s Will Muschamp, are against Spurrier’s plan. As Muschamp says, “An SEC game should count as an SEC game.”
Alabama’s Nick Saban puts it more forthrightly. “You’re going to sort of minimize the importance of cross-divisional games if you say they don’t’ count toward the championship,” Saban said. “Then we’re really not the SEC. Then we’re just an East and a West, so why would we play the games?”
It makes for interesting discussion, but, of course, Spurrier’s plan isn’t likely to come to fruition as long as SEC Commissioner Mike Slive has this point of view: “It’s hard for me to think about a conference game that doesn’t count.”
What this really amounts to is Spurrier’s annual bid to make himself the center of discussion at the conference confab. Last year, it was his stood-no-chance plan for coaches to pay players out of their own pockets. This year, it’s his problem with the way the division champ is determined. (Funny, he never had a problem with the same system during all those years he was at Florida.)
Next year, assuming he hasn’t retired by then, it’ll no doubt be something else.
The bottom line is that Spurrier is like a 5-year-old, constantly crying out for attention. “Look at me! Look at what I’m doing!”
It’s kind of pathetic, really.

Under Spurriers plan there would no need to play any SEC East vs West games. In unrelated news USCe reached out to South Carolina State to see if they could schedule an extra game each year.

Who really cares? The SEC east representative in the SEC title game is just one last exhibition game for the West champion before they play in the title game. Without Tim Tebow, the east is pretty much useless. If the 4 team playoff doesn’t have conference champions then the SEC championship won’t have any relevance anyways.

Everyone can sit here and get excited about D1-A college football, but until a 16 team playoff system is implemented, this is not a sport, but a popularity contest. These conference commissioners, including Slive of the SEC are just protecting their turf, and don’t want their apple cart turned upside down.
The BCS sucks, it’s broken and is a total ripoff to college football fans across this nation.

What does it really matter anyway, other than Florida, nothing of importance resides in the SEC East. Alabama, LSU and Arkansas as of lately are the only ones making any noise. If Alabama and/or LSU were in the Big 12, everyone would be talking about the Big 12 vs. the SEC.
Go with a 16 team playoff system, 11 conference champions and 5 at large determined by computer and/or writes and coaches poll. This would provide a true champion.
As I said before, go ahead and waste your time and money on D1-A football, with no playoff system, it is not a sport.

Interesting and I think uncharacteristic for Spurrier … In essence, he is saying that he can’t beat the West teams and therefore, can’t win the SEC. It’s not only too hard, it’s not doable. So, he would like to make things a bit easier on his team.
Well, welcome to the big leagues. I thought you liked playing in the toughest conference in the land. Every damn team is tough and can end a teams dreams. Man up. Tell your team to man up. Really sad state of affairs trying to lower the bar.

All USCe had to do was beat a bad Auburn team at home and they couldn’t do it. A few weeks later UGA had the same pressure and trounced AU 45-7. The chickens could NOT take care of business as usual. Please remember, they are the lovable losers of the SEC…. Remember the season they started 5-0 then lost their next 7. That was a classic USCe season for sure.

Hey Steve Spurrier (probably just a SC fan), I guess SC didn’t embarrass themselves the previous year in that game against Auburn. Great showing!! Auburn won 56 to 17. SC has been and always will be generally not on the level with UGA, FLA, and TENN. in the east. Recently they have been competetive but in years past not so. They will have a good team this year, but so will UGA. I look for UGA to win in the fall and not give the game away like last year.

It’s real simple son.
From the time you played Georgia last year, you played common opponents of Georgia except for Arkansas.
You lost to Arkansas
If that was your only other loss, because of beating Georgia head to head, you still win the East.
Then, because of your silly loyalty to a drunk QB who should have been kicked off the team earlier, you lost to AUBURN AT HOME. We beat auburn 45-7 and could have scored 70 on them.
YOU LOST TO AUBURN
That is not our fault
That is not the SEC’s fault

Just amazing that all of a sudden USCjr’s perceived scheduling inequity is justification for essentially breaking the conference apart. They have a couple of decent years and think they need to remake the conference in their own image. If they don’t like SEC rules, they could always go back to being an independent. They’d miss us a hell of a lot more than we’d miss them.
Good god, it’s not like USC was undefeated. if they’d won their games or if they even beat an average Auburn team AT HOME they wouldn’t say a word about this. It’s not like Auburn going undefeated and being voted out of the MNC-they had a legit beef.
Would be funny if the SEC adopted this misguided proposal and a few years from now the scheduling tables were turned and USCjr screwed themselves.
Guess we have to forgive USCjr, they are so new to being relevant that they really don’t understand how things work. It is gratifying to know that they still can’t sleep at night 6 months after losing out on the bid to the SECCG.

As far as the playoff thing goes, I agree that if they are set on four teams, then Conference Champs only in the hunt for the title game. Alabama should not have been in the title game last season, any more than Georgia in 2007. I have been a Dawg all my life, and have supported the SEC teams in their bowl games most of the time, except Florida and Auburn occasionally, but there are other conferences and teams that deserve a shot as well. Mizzou will be as good if not better than A&M. Arky will return to the pack. UA and LSU will be strong for the forseeable future. A few years back though UA and LSU struggled while UF was the class of the conference. The balance of power between the 2 divisions didn’t seem to be a national crisis then. What has changed?

Hi, I’m GTBob’s imaginary friend with benefits. Lock your doors because here’s the latest on the Internet on one of Tech’s most distinguished alumni!
Reuben Houston was a cornerback for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football team from 2002 to 2005. On June 22, 2005, he was arrested for allegedly conspiring to distribute 94 pounds of marijuana worth $60,000. Houston was subsequently suspended from the Tech football team, but was reinstated following a judge’s order that Houston must be allowed to play football at Tech. Houston was sentenced on April 4, 2006 to nine months probation as part of a plea deal.
In December 2006 Houston was arrested in Florida for possession of over 20 grams of Marijuana. He began a year-and-one-month prison sentence in June 2007 and was released in May 2008.
Since September 2009, Reuben Houston has been on the run from U.S. Marshalls when he brought a gun to the home of a family whose child had gotten into some sort of a fight with Houston’s daughter. He is now on the run from the U.S. Marshals.
.
Houston is wanted for making terrorist threats and aggravated assault with a weapon.
He is also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon because of 2005 charges connected to a marijuana distribution ring.
Anyone with information can call the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force at 770-508-2500.

While Spurrier’s idea is obviously nonsensical, the really surprising part is the apparent inability of the ‘ole ball coach to see how this idea is not necessarily even in South Carolina’s best interests. After all, the last two years not withstanding, UGA beat’s South Carolina more often than not. Now I certainly understand why their fans can’t understand this, but I always thought Spurrier was a pretty smart guy.

It can be wrapped up pretty simply – Spurrier is as Spurrier does. Classic Spurrier provides plenty of amunition why not to like the ol’ ball coach each year. It is evident that he is a forward thinker when it comes to constructing his team and recruiting, but when it comes to things outside of his control, he has a limited view and a lack of self control, hence the baby-rattle that we often see displayed on national TV. However, this seems all to easy to spot – Most coaches should get the premise on why teams should be balanced and play/count both sides in developing, in the end, a true SEC champion team – and as Richt said the schedule changes. Spurriers latest play seems a bit desperate. Kind of like when you are squeezing the lemon for the last bit of juice. It makes me believe that he can see the end of the road not too far off, and wants one last advantage before he hangs up the ol’ baby-rattle and retires.

What is Spurrier smoking under that visor? I like Sabin, Richt, Muschamp and Slive’s opinion about why play a game that does not count! Heck, Spurrier, you already get the chance to pick non-conference games that don’t count. Just make sure you pick easy ones to make your record look better. Everyone else does! SEC should be total SEC, that’s what makes it the greatest conference in the country! Each team has to bring their total “A” game each week and this is what makes the SEC stronger than any other conference, besides having the best athletes found in the southeast! I’d just like to see commitments by players stick instead of coaches persuading players to flip-flop to their team. That boils down to non-ethical behavior and teaches the player involved that his word doesn’t matter. It kinda makes you feel that he will go on thru life with his word not meaning anything and it certainly reflects in a bad way toward the coach becoming the robber-baron. The best at this seems to be Nick Sabin! He should win the championship every year at this rate unless the other coaches can become better salesmen!

Spurrier and USC fans realize that any rule changes will not be back dated and we will not receive the 2011 SEC EAST title. UGA won it fair and square. But, bloggers like Bill love to act like that is Spurrier’s motive.. to get the 2011 SEC EAST title awarded to him because of his “crying”. Anywhoo, I have news for you Dawgs. 1) Spurrier isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. 2) No more Garcia and a more focused and disciplined QB is in charge. 3) Defense is still nasty with or without EJ. 4) Game is in Columbia 5) You have Murray as a QB and he will lose for the third time to the Chickens. 5) Marcus Lattimore is hungry.

This is just my opinion, but I think this is gonna be the year Spurrier actually pokes someones eye out when he throws that sun-visor of his. With all the TEARS IN HIS EYES, he can’t see as well, and we all know that UGA will make Stevie ONE MAD HEN THIS YEAR! BUG-GOCKKK…

Most everybody in his Hometown (Johnson City, Tenn.) Hate poor little Stevies guts! If you mention his name, they are ready to fight! They love to fight anyway, but that’s besides the point. I lived there for two years and really loved the wonderful people.(except for little Stevie) Nobody else from Johnson City is such a whiney crybaby, but he was A KNOWN WHINER EVEN WHEN HE WAS AT DUKE. He actually got worse, BELIEVE IT OR NOT!!!

All Spurrier wants is a format that helps him. If they changed it for this year, he would want it changed again when it don’t benefit him! Besides, all of a sudden he thinks SC HAS ARRIVED. WANT TO BET HE IS IN FOR A RUDE AWAKENING? WITH OLD CONNOR SHAW THROWING THE BALL, OLD SPURRIER MIGHT HAVE A HEART ATTACK WATCHING HIM! Me personally, I cant wait to shut him up this fall. I bet GA want turn it over 4 times for 21 points! This will in turn give them NO CHANCE IN HELL!

Let’s say the records of UGA and USCe are reversed next year, and the rules are changed to meet his gripes. Then next year he could have won the SEC East by the record he possessed at the end of the year, with this years rules, but he lost it, because he had the rules changed to make him happier for this year. Then he would be crying just as loud next year as he is now. You play by the rules as they are, not what you wish they had been.

Looks like Spurrier’s comments have hit a little too close to the mark with Bill. Pretty upset there Bill seeing Spurrier’s SC club doing to UGA what Spurrier’s UF squad did for a decade, huh. It stinks.
But reality is that SC has been the class of the SEC East for the past two seasons and every indication is that UGA fans better get out their SEC West pom-poms again for 2012.
After SC handles UGA easily in Columbia, the SEC East title will be decided at Baton Rouge in October. So repeat after me Bill…. Gueax Tigers rah, rah, rah,

You sure do research don’t you? UGA is not on suspension for paying half the hotels in S.C. to put up their players in luxury suites. UGA is not second in the Fulmer cup in standing for 2012 so far. If S.C. disciplined their player in line, with the severity of the offenses they commit, CMR could rightly say that about S.C., but he is too much of a gentleman, to do that and lower himself to Spurrier like standards. You, on the other hand, seem to have no problem, floating on the bottom, with your childish remarks, that serve very little purpose. You are just another clown that Spurrier seeks to amuse and like a lot of your kind, you are indeed , easily amused.

Spurrier is a self-serving, whiny, POS that doesn’t do anything or say anything unless he feels as if it is going to benefit him or bring attention to himself. It wouldn’t suprise me if now that his proposal didn’t get passed by the league, little Stevie threatens to hold his breath until the league gives him what he wants. It makes you wonder if Stevie ever listened to his daddy’s sermons and teaching. I doubt seriously that any preacher would preach or teach from the pulpit that little Stevie’s behavior (self-serving, whiny, pout when you don’t get your way) is the proper way to behave.

Spurrier is a good coach who is always working the refs and the system for any advantage. Richt said it best. We know what the rules are going in and we just follow them. Spurrier just needs to worry about which $10 luxury hotel to house his players in and figure out a way for his team to quit disappearing in 3 or 4 games a year.

Its so funny to read this THUGA homer writing about Spurrier’s idea being a bad one since it’s THUGA who gets to have the easiest SEC schedule in history not one, but TWO years in a row while Spurrier and team has to play one of the more difficult SEC schedules.
It doesn’t matter, just like last year with that cupcake schedule…THUGA won’t sniff an SECC. Then it will be all “Fire Richt” afterwards. (And they probably will).

Third rate coach? You need to but a Lindsey’s football magazine and turn to the SEC coach’s scoreboard page. If you care about facts, the only thing missing from Richt’s record is a NC, which is very important, but Richt is 1st and 2nd in the SEC in just about EVERY category.

Hey Bill King, Did this article come out because of Spurrier’s idea or his owning UGA’s ass since he arrived in Gainesville back in the eraly 1990’s? People always laugh & scoff at the ole ball coach and his crazy ideas… but in most cases, he turns out to be right.
When he first got to UF, they were under probation, along with the UF administration & NCAA they were trying to figure out the appropriate punishment. Prohibiting UF to win the SEC Championship was on the table as punishment for the previous coaching staff’s violations. Coach Spurrier told the UF administration that he thought the Gators had a good shot to win it all. The administration basically told him, “We’ve NEVER won the SEC Championship here… so, we’re going to take that punishment & move on from this.” Spurrier & the Gators went on to win the SEC that year.
Spurrier also came into the SEC with everyone telling him that teams couldn’t pass the ball and win the conference championship. You had to run the ball & play great defense. 7 SEC Championships & 1 National Championship later, people look at that quite differently now.
Back in the early 1990’s, Spurrier was the first SEC Coach to call for an NCAA playoff. As a so-called “sportswriter,”…have you heard all the talk recently about a four team playoff?!?
Last year, he had some other coaches at the SEC meeting sign onto a plan to pay players out of their own pockets. It’s now being discussed and considered by the SEC & NCAA.
And, yes, if they add two or more teams to the SEC in the next few years, which by all indications is going to happen eventually, there will indeed be division champions based on division records.
In terms of creativity, on the field as well as off, he’s done more for SEC football than anyone before or since him; and that includes Bear Bryant. Just wish his 14-5 record against Georgia wouldn’t affect your writing so much.
He’s always been fifteen or twenty years ahead of his time and he still is. Hopefully, one of these days, you & the rest of college football will catch up.

Spurrier is a great coach. He always leads his team to beat UGA whether he is FL or USC, good recruits or average recruits.
Actually his team beats FL 2 years in a row. Can UGA claim that in the last 20 years?
With that in mind, why would anybody trust some UGA fans’ intelligence over a legendary coach like Spurrier’s.
Here is the current SEC formula:
1. inner-division game is the most important, count as 1
2. cross-division game is the 2nd most important, count as 1
3. out-of-conference game is the least important, count as 0
Spurrier proposed formula:
1. inner-division game is the most important, count as 1
2. cross-division game is the 2nd most important, count as 0
3. out-of-conference game is the least important, count as 0
If you don’t like Spurrier’s formula, you may come up with something like:
1. inner-division game is the most important, count as 1
2. cross-division game is the 2nd most important, count as 1/2
3. out-of-conference game is the least important, count as 1/4
Spurrier is Spurrier, Spurrier is good with Maths too. He knows UGA got into SECCG with a technicality, while most UGA fans have no clue.

“UGA: The Junkyard Blawg Spurrier makes another bid for attention
10:54 am May 30, 2012, by Bill King
“Look at me!” (Associated Press)

George,
You sure do research don’t you?

Spurrier is worth listening to, and people do listen to him and the other top coaches in the SEC.
No one listens to Richt, since he is – at best – a third rate coach of a mediocre team.

I also love all the references to how easy our schedule was last yr. and how easy it will be this yr. The implication is that we don’t deserve the East because of our schedule. I guess one can assume the next yr that we have to play Auburn, Alabama, and LSU in the same yr. that we should be given the East title no matter what our record is because we played a harder schedule.
The people that think this way are the same ones that believe that we bribed the conference office to make our shedule this way. These same people also believe Elvis is still alive, that the moon landing was staged in the New Mexico desert, the 9-11 attacks were carried out by our government…
We play the schedule in front of us just like any other school. Some years it will be weaker, some stronger.

Spurrier is just thinking about this year because he knows that he WILL lose 2 to 3 games by the West and it’s 50/50 against UGA. If the tables are turned we are not even having this discussion because the whiner would be finding something else to whine about.

Spurrier has hated Georgia ever since UF was rated number 1 in the nation and Steve was the future Heisman winner but when the Gators got to Jacksonville, the
Bulldogs beat the Gators and knocked them out of the national championship picture. Georgia defensive end George Patton spent more time in the Florida backfield than Spurrier did. What a great game and a great win for Georgia. Steve has never gotton over it and I hope it eats at him until he goes to that big Chickencoop in the sky.
He knows UGA got into SECCG with a technicality, while most UGA fans have no clue.”
Please tell me WHY a “division” game (AKA: SEC game) NOT count? That’s like saying the MLB should reformat the GB (games back) to ONLY include games against teams in your division (instead of your overall W/L record).

Saban said it better than anyone else….. if the games don’t count then the teams shouldn’t be considered the same conference. What is the point of playing them if they don’t count?
Spurrier does have a slight point though and unless the schools all agree to step up to 9 conference games, the disparity of conference strength of schedule from year to year is only going to get worse and the East and West might as well be separate conferences. Personally, I’d like it better if the SEC was back to a 12-team conference or even a 10 team conference with 9 conference games. You should play all and if not then almost all of your conference opponents each year. As a Georgia fan, I hate not playing Alabama and LSU every year.
