Jay Clark in happier times with the Gym Dogs. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
Replacing a legend is nearly always a thankless job, but new head coaches rarely step into a more difficult situation than Jay Clark did following on the high-heels of Suzanne Yoculan.
Yoculan built the Georgia program into a national power, winning 10 national championships, including five consecutive NCAA titles to cap off her incredible career.
The drop-off during Clark’s brief tenure, unfortunately, was just as dramatic, with the Gym Dogs missing the NCAA tournament completely one year and never making it to the final six.
It’s a shame, especially since Clark was Yoculan’s longtime assistant and was instrumental in those championships. If Yoculan had gone ahead and hung it up when she first announced her retirement in 2007, instead of coaching two more valedictory seasons, it’s entirely likely that Clark, her designated successor, would have begun his head coaching career at UGA with two national titles. That, of course, would have built up more than enough credit for him to survive through a few lean years.
But that’s not the way it went, and while the Gym Dogs spent most of this season as a Top 5 team, they wound up finishing 11th in the recent NCAA tournament. So Clark’s resignation Friday doesn’t come as a big surprise.
I’m particularly sorry to see it happen, though, because Jay, a close friend of my brother Jonathan, is a UGA grad and, more than that, an ardent Bulldog fan through and through. As he told our Chip Towers Friday, “I’ll always be a Dawg. I’ve always loved this place and I always will.”
Here’s wishing the best for Jay Clark, a damn good Dawg!
Now, let’s get to some Junkyard Mail …
Ron in Asheville writes: Hi Bill, In the old days, I hardly gave the South Carolina game much thought. Now, I want the Dawgs to whip Spurrier’s team by 50 points. What are our chances of reversing the Gamecock win streak this fall?

Marcus Lattimore will be tough if he's healthy. (Associated Press)
As I wrote a couple of months ago, it’s kind of early to be handicapping the season, but at this point I’d say South Carolina definitely looks like the toughest game for the Dawgs in 2012. True, the Gamecocks lose star receiver Alshon Jeffery, but they have highly touted freshman Shaq Roland coming in. Carolina does have to replace a couple of starters on the offensive line (not as extensive a rebuilding project as Georgia’s), but Connor Shaw looks to be coming along pretty well at QB and, of course, at running back Marcus Lattimore should be the class of the conference, if he’s fully recovered from last season’s injury. On defense, Jadeveon Clowney is back but the Gamecocks have to replace several key starters, so that’s probably their biggest question mark. I expect the Georgia-South Carolina game to be a close one, as usual. But fortunately for the Dawgs, the schedule again favors UGA, so even if Steve Spurrier manages to take his third in a row, Georgia still stands a good shot at winning the SEC East. And that’s what really counts.
SammyDawg writes: Bill, now that Michael Adams is on his way out, I think it’s inevitable that Vince Dooley’s name will somehow get attached to UGA’s stadium, don’t you? I don’t expect it to happen until after Adams is gone (he’s too small a man to make a magnanimous gesture like that), but I figure his replacement will want to heal the rift in the Bulldog Nation by reaching out to the Dooley camp. I favor Sanford-Dooley Stadium over Dooley-Sanford Stadium, but I’d be happy with either one. What about you?
Sammy, I think your analysis is probably spot-on. Between the two choices you offer, I’d tend to favor Sanford-Dooley, but I’ve actually come around to preferring Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium, which would allow the former coach-athletic director to be properly honored without going against the wishes of the Sanford family, who are on record as being against a hyphenated name.
Skyler Holcomb writes: Bill, First and foremost let me just say that I thoroughly enjoy reading your Blawg. It is by far my favorite source of information regarding my Dawgs. I know that the issue of drug testing and the possibility of uniformity has been a highly debated subject among universities and so forth, but my question is this, why would UGA pick the week after spring break to drug test the players? I agree with the university’s stance on drug related punishments, but come on. They’re just setting themselves up for failure if they test these 19, 20, 21-year-old kids the week after their one major break from school. What’s your stance?
I agree that testing right after students returned from spring break was not the most competitive move UGA’s coaches could have made, but perhaps they were looking to send a larger message to the players, who had been warned right before the break. If so, let’s hope it was received.
Jesse Murrah writes: Bill, I’d like to know more about our new kickers. Kickers are just about the most important players on any team, but they never get talked about until they miss. I have heard that one of our new guys kicked 98 percent of his high school kickoffs out of the end zone. It would be great if he did that 100 percent of the time with the Dawgs, eliminating kickoff returns (I’m thinking Honey Badger) and forcing opponents to start every drive on the 20.
Incoming freshmen Marshall Morgan (placekicker) and Collin Barber (punter) are considered the likely starters, though they’ll have to win the jobs in preseason camp. Morgan is from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and reportedly has a very strong leg. It’s notable that while kickers are usually pretty much ignored by the recruiting services, he was generally considered a three-star prospect. He was extremely reliable kicking field goals in high school, hitting 15 of 16 his junior year and 10 of 12 as a senior. His longest to date is 59 yards, I believe. He’s the one you’ve heard about putting 98 percent of his kickoffs in the end zone. And while he’s seen as a placekicker, he can punt as well. Barber, the favorite at punter, is from Cartersville. He averaged 43 yards on his punts, was variously rated as a two-star or three-star prospect and was ranked as the No. 6 high school punter in the nation.
Traveling down a well-worn path, Zackariah M. Craig writes: What has Aaron Murray done that makes him untouchable as the starting QB? I would argue that UGA has won in spite of him. UGA has not beaten any team that had more talent than it has since Murray was the starter. In addition, Murray comes up small in all of the big UGA games. SC, UF, LSU, and Boise State were all poor games for him. 0-2 record in bowl games even though UGA had the better teams. Is there anything that can happen this year to open up the QB competition?
Short of an injury to Murray, I think you better get used to him as Georgia’s starter. Meanwhile, here’s a reader who takes a different view of the quarterback situation …
Robert Clements writes: The thing that gripes me the MOST is the rentless bashing coach Mark Richt for playing Murray instead of [Hutson] Mason and the stupid statement that Murray has never beaten or has only beaten ranked teams a few times, blah, blah, blah!!!! Do you ever see them say Jarvis Jones or Tavarres King has never beaten any team? Football is a team game and if one or more don’t do their job bad things can and usually do happen. Nobody of sound mind actually believes CMR does not play the guys that give UGA the best chance of winning. At least the trolls have gotten off Isaiah Crowell while they are on Murray. IC, by the way, will be the top RB in the SEC IF he stays healthy.
You make a good point about it being a team game, though quarterbacks tend to get more than their share of the blame for a loss. As for running back, I don’t know if he’ll be the top back in the SEC, but a healthy Crowell certain should be among the conference’s best. And, fortunately, he looks to have stiff competition on his own team.
Stew Lipham writes: Heard on Dan Patrick show that Mo Lewis’ son is 6′8 in 8th grade and has two D1 offers, but not from UGA. For the love of our program, why not?!
Both New Mexico and Memphis have offered early scholarships to Chris Lewis, a 6-foot-7, 190-pound forward at age 14 who is already attracting a lot of attention. However, making scholarship offers to kids still in middle school isn’t the norm, though it’s certainly a good way for a school to get an athlete’s attention. Still, before his high school days in Milton are done, he’s likely to have lots of offers in hand, including one from UGA.

David,
I agree with you and I don’t remember seeing Murray on the punting team when Honey Badger blew the game open!!! Up to that point LSU’s offense was nothing compared to UGa and Murray, but the idiots still blame Murray. I agree it is a TEAM sport and we need to quit blaming one person. Good point about Jarvis Jones never beating a top 25 team…..guess he is the problem (not)!!!

I wish people stop crying about Murray geez . Did it ever occur he don’t do good in big games because the oline sucks in big games ? Ever notice in big games he always running for his life . Yeah he make bone head decision sometimes. but its funny how fans watch a spring game and think one of our backups should be playing based off 2s vs 2s lol ! I truly believe if Murray had a bama type line he’d be on the heisman list somewhere . I mean come on our line got Dominated by boise and Michigan stated …

Anyone thinking Hutson Mason should be the starter has clearly forgotten that Murray threw the most TDs in a single season by a UGA QB, was close the year before, and is likely to break the all time record if he stays all 4 years. Mason will get his shot after Murray moves on, but by no means does he look like he’s ready to supplant Murray. His arm strength is pretty good, but he has not shown the ability to escape pressure and create yardage like Murray has (despite all the sacks). Murray definitely has a lot of gunslinger in him which can lead to INTs, but will also lead to some amazing TDs (anyone remember the 2 4th down TD passes against Florida???). Everyone needs to relax. Murray is the starter. If Hason was truly better, he would be the starter. Period.

Didn’t the rule concerning kick offs change this year. I think now Morgan will be kicking from the 35 yard line instead of the 30. If Morgan doesn’t kick it out of the end zone maybe it will land in the end zone. Opponents will definitely have to decide if it is smart to run it out when they will be starting on the 25 yard line, instead of the 20. If I am wrong concerning the rule change please correct me.

The only reason MIch State was even in the game at the end was due to two 2nd half Murray int’s, one at the beginning of the 2nd half when another UGA score would have put us up by nearly 4 TD’s and a pick 6 later that made it possible for MSU to complete the comeback.
I think Murray should be the starter, but he has got a lot to prove in big games. He simply must quit making crucial mistakes or the Dawgs will continue to have a terrible record vs the better teams on the schedule.

In all of the games that UGA lost in 2011, Murray’s turnovers led to complete breakdowns on the D team and O team. In other words, we lose our edge or our grit, or toughness due to his always constant PIC 6s and Fumbled 6s. Same was true of the 2010 Florida game, where he so badly choked in regulation play and in OT ………………..threw the game away. One of the most bitter losses in my 50 years of following UGA, that game was.
Until Murray can stop that junk, he will continue to feast or strave UGA football, esxpecially head to head with ultra talented teams like UGA.

Clearly, with Murray’s nationally worst 14 interceptions, and nationally worst 33 sacks, and his career worst in UGA history 0-9 record against ranked teams, it’s more than obvious he’s a lock at QB. Those are just outstanding stats that would amaze even the most cynical analysts. As we say in Athens about Murray, nobody does it, worser. Here’s to 20 interceptions and 58 sacks and 0-12 lifetime record against ranked teams in 2012, since Richt is so impressed by such stats.

Bill, It is silly to suggest that losing to SC is okay as long as we win the east. That same scenario was offered to me 20+ years ago after Fla won their third in a row against UGA. Be careful what you wish for–to change the momentum and confidence of that game to SOS is a disaster for UGA. It is not always about the losses, but it is always about who you lose to. Rivalries must be taken seriously if we want to manitain the upper hand.

Aaron Murray is a good QB trying to become great. He tries too hard and when you do that the results are almost always bad. Prolonged slumps, batting, kicking, shooting, are always due to trying too hard. Human beings tend to over-do corrections in their behavior. A batter will change everything trying to get back into the groove. QB’s get alot of the blame when things go wrong offensively. Aaron Murray obsesses over his mistakes. There was an article written not long ago where Murray addressed his tendency to press too hard. After a while it becomes a habit because as a competitor you want to win badly and as a QB you sometimes feel like you have to make the play or carry the team on your shoulders. You can do that in basketball but rarely in football.
Murray squeezes the bar of soap too tightly in big games and it translates to turnovers. If he can master his desire to try too hard and let his teammates make plays as well, he can be really good. If not, then expect what you have seen his first two years.

@Sadly… the weak schedule is due to the way the conference rotates not the AD scheduling. Everybody schedules a creampuff once a year. Look at who LSU opens with, North Texas. Two weeks later it is Idaho. Sure they play Bama but that is conference scheduling. Their creampuffs are due to AD scheduling. Bama opens with Michigan but week 2 and week 4 are W.Kentucky and Florida Atlantic.
Georgia’s schedule will rotate back to a more challenging schedule probably starting next year.
As for the under performing teams… we will see.

It’s great having the Ole Ball Coach in our division. His move to SC has made the division even more competitive. Our schedule should work in our favour this year. The year we were rated pre-season #1 we had a brutally competitive schedule and got done in by it. Hopefully we’ll do well and I like playing SC a little later in the year. Hopefully we’ll have our “legs” under us and not defeat ourselves like we’ve done in years past.

The past is just that…the past. Georgia is really in a no win situation regarding scheduling BCS conference opponents. Damon Evans had you on the right track scheduling the OK States and AZ States of the world. Colorado too. Problem is, CMR was supposed to win the big non-conference games. And we all know, winning big games isn’t really his strong suit. So, stick with the lousy home schedules with the Southern University, Louisiana Directional, and SoCon powerhouses. It’s really simple. If the phony Richt loses to S.C for the 3rd year in a row, he should be fired Sunday morning after the game. S.C. has never beaten UGA 3 years in a row, and if this loser of a head coach allows it to happen, then don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out. Actually the door should have hit this clown’s ass on the way out several years ago. But pathetic UGA fans don’t know what the phrase “What the hell have you done for me lately” actually means. The answer for your wonderful coach is nothing. He has done nothing since 2005, and he will do nothing in 2012 either. He made a pitiful showing in the SECC game last year, and this clown will never get there again. He is the worst head coach in the SEC when it comes to evaluating asst. coaches and high school talent. He has 4 of the worst asst. coaches in the SEC on his offensive staff. Ball, Bobo, Friend, and McClendon, all are pitiful game day coaches.Yet, Richt gets a free pass on hiring these pitiful coaches. None of them have the resume’ to be coaches in the SEC, and none of them can recruit talent at the position they coach. Richt has proven he can’t coach, and he now has proven he can’t hire competent coaches. Bottomline, UGA has no coaches that can coach or recruit. That is a recipe for a total disaster, and after this year, all of you ignorant cool-aid drinking UGA fans will see what i’m talking about. UGA will not get to SECC game this year with Murray, BOBO and Richt, and after this year when all of the defensive talent is gone, Richt and Bobo want have anyone to cover up their pitiful coaching ability, and their favorite loser BOY Murray. UGA is a joke now, and it will be as long as Richt,Bobo, Friend, McClendon and Ball are in athens. Ask yourself one question blind UGA fans, how many schools have come after the worst Offensive coaching staff in the SEC(Bobo,Friend, Ball, McClendon????? The answer is (0) zero. A few comments about UGA:
1. Four different SEC teams have won the last six BCS championships.
2. UGA was not one of those teams.
3. During that period, UGA did not win the SEC championship.
4. Red panties and hashbrowns.
In other words, UGA has sunk into total irrelevancy both regionally and nationally.
So why is UGA paying Mark Richt millions of dollars a year?

I think the Dawgs will go 11-3 or 12-2 this year. But the thing is, this team and this program has reached the season. Richt and Bobo aren’t beating LSU, Bama or Arkansas, so who cares? It’s hard to get excited when it feels like we’re playing for second or third place. 11 or 12 wins means nothing if your schedule is weak and you’re not in the National Title hunt. Richt’s early teams were solid, but even they underachieved( usually against Florida). The bottom line is this: do we want a Great Person who is a Good Coach, or do we want a Great Coach who is Good Person? It is clear that our fan-base prefers the latter. So if that is the case, then be satisfied with Good and quit your bellyaching!

Speaking of dreams that is what all of you cool-aid drinkers that love Richt have every night. Richt is now and has been for 11 years nothing but a phony that was lucky enough to inherit the talent that Donnan left him. Since then this clown has done nothing. He backed into a SECC in 2005, and he backed his way out of one in 2008 because of his boyfriend Martinez. This guy has the worst Offensive coaching staff in the SEC. If you don’t believe me, ask your brainwashed mind who has a worse coaching staff in the SEC. Friend, Bobo, Ball, McClendon, all big time names in the coaching ranks. NOT!! No one has offered these clowns, and none of these clowns should have ever been offered jobs at a top SEC school. But yet your wonderful head coach that hasn’t got a clue on how to evaluate coaching ability hired or promoted all of them. You keep on dreaming moron. And you keep on thinking that it will be O.K. to lose to S.C for the third year in a row. You are why UGA is in the pathetic state it is in now. You and all of your pathetic friends=MEDIOCRITY. Bill, is this season when touchbacks on kickoffs start from the 25 yardline? if so is kicking to the endzone a good idea?
Don’t kick Murray to the curb for last years SC loss. 11 grown men on the punt return team watched Melvin Ingram run a fake punt back 70 yards for a TD.
Blair Walsh missed the kick to win the bowl game against MSU.
Malcome Mitchell dropped a TD pass against LSU that could put us ahead even more and eventually won the SEC.
No excuses for the Boise St loss last year, Boise had a pretty good team loaded down with seniors and very good ones at that.
Murray will be fine as the starter.

But Murray had 3 CATASTROPHIC mistakes.

No other player made more catastrophic mistakes in the South Carolina game than Aaron Murray.

So disgusted and disgruntled that UGA fans underwrite and generate more revenue for the athletic dept. than virtually every university in America. So hated in its own state that the university is adding more schools and high school senior applicants increasingly have to score over 1300 on the SAT and 3.7 GPA to be considered for entrance. I would say that you’re one that has the prob, not UGA. Your empire of one fortunately is only your problem.

Georgia actually has a shot this year Dog fans. We don’t have to apologize for our schedule. If strength of schedule really mattered, Georgia would be the 2nd greatest college football program of all time as per College Football Data Warehouse all time schedule points.
1 Michigan 827.36
2 Georgia 809.29
3 Texas 788.18
4 Northwestern 787.04
5 Louisiana St. 786.89
6 Notre Dame 786.07
7 Auburn 783.63
8 Alabama 780.27
9 Georgia Tech 778.28
10 Illinois 772.99
Auburn / Tennessee / Florida / Georgia Tech have all won a national championship since we last won one. The fact remains our schedule includes these 4 teams every year and they are 4 of the top 16 programs of all time as per College Football Data Warehouse all time total points (UGA is #11 there). If we play Alabama or LSU in the SECCG, that will be 5 of the top 16 all time programs. Funny when you see that Ole Miss is the 29th best program of all time and that South Carolina and Missouri will probably be our biggest test.

Good information. I find it interesting how so many knuckleheads bash UGa’s schedule!!! It all depends on how a team is playing in a particular year. UGa destroyed the defending NC (Auburn) last season by almost 6 TDs. They beat Florida and Tennessee…..teams who were down, but recently won NCs. It is a total crapshoot with schedules in the SEC. Based on recent history UGa’s schedule could have been the toughest in the nation last year if Auburn, Tenn, FL had “up” years along with the ranked teams like LSU, Boise State, SC and MSU. Yes, MSU too…they beat the Big 10 representatives in the Sugar and Rose Bowls so they were tough too!!!

Mason had a chance at playing QB in a D-1 program by transferring and redshirting a season, but chose to stay: live with your decision Huston…he sounds like a good guy, but he should take take the high road and just say Murray’s the starter and he’s comfortable with the role of back-up, and that he’ll be ready to step in and contribute if needed, and further, that he is looking forward to competing with LeMay, etc. for the starting job when Murray moves on…if he wants the degree from UGA, then he made the right decision, and he if wanted to get a degree and still play D-1 football, well the jury is still out on that…time will tell, but I have long ago grown sick and tired of hearing the Mason’s drama

JMO but the firing of the Gymnastics coach is the 1st shot at the rest of the coaches at UGA. Richt is on the clock and his new contract has notified him as such. How do you fire a coach that has had some success? Bama did it with Bill Curry after he finished 10-2 and the Sugar Bowl and only after his 3rd year. If the folks with the checkbook believe that your current HC has taken the program as far as he can then you fix the problem and quick. UGA is not a well coached team and the staff in no way has top shelf coaches at most positions. When the AD has to intervene on behalf of the HC by taking away clerical duties that he never should have been assigned then you know you’ve lost the battle for the most part already. A strong and focus leader would have told whomever to take those task and shove them up their behind on day #1.

UGa played 4 teams last season who recently won NCs. UGa doesn’t control when their opponents have up or down years. Also, Boise State has finished in the Top 5 more in recent years than Bama….so quit bragging. GT recently won the ACC championship, SC was in the Top 10 and MSU beat the Sugar and Rose Bowl reps from the Big Ten. Please quit the mindless bashing of UGa’s schedule because if their opponents had typical years UGa would have easily had the toughest schedule in the nation. For me, it’s all moot at this point, until Mark Richt shows he’s capable of “developing” and “coaching” his team to “victories” at the highest level, my interest, and excitement is at an all time low, and I’ve been following the Dawgs for 40 plus years. Bill, I agree that the goals is winning the East. But to so simply throw out there that a third loss to SC (and 4 in 6) can be overcome because we have a weak schedule shows what we’ve become, what we are, and what others see in us…a program that’s willing to just accept that as long as we win enough games to make it “look good” everybody’s happy. Well, I, for one, am not. There is NO reason we should be in this situation with SC (ie hoping to turn around ANOTHER losing trend to ANOTHER SEC East team), but as he did at UF, Spurrier made it about beating Georgia to build his path to glory and once again, we’re the willing accomplice. Simply put, I don’t care whether we back into another East title or not, I’ll consider this year a fail if we have to do it that way again.

@ Bill:
I’m wondering if those games that ZACKARIAH CRAIG and his ilk watched are the same UGA games that I watched this past season.
How can he/they pile on AM about his performances in SC, LSU; UF & MS games???
SC: He had a few problems but SC had a very good team and as Spurrier said SC was fortunate to come out with a win and AM led the team to score 42 points on a strong SC defense. Special Team play, or the lack thereof, cost UGA that game.
UF: Although AM didn’t have the ideal game he was personally responsible for bringing UGA back with 2 critical completions on 4th downs to give UGA a “Seldom accomplished win over UF”.
LSU: AM led UGA to a 10 point halftime lead over LSU and AT LEAST 2 SURE TD passes were dropped.which easily could have produced a 24-0 halftime lead and definitely should have provided reason for UGA to hang on for possibly one of their best altime performances and perhaps a win. Again Special teams had a large say in allowing LSU to comeback in the second half as did the UGA OL.
MS: This game was the most disappointing second half performance of the season in my opinion and was, in a way, similar to the LSU game. At least one MS D-lineman spent more time in the UGA backfield than any 2 UGA RBs. Only AM’s scrambling ability saved his life in the 2nd halves of the LSU and MS. As in all of the close/lost games this past season the lack of even moderate success by UGA kickers was a huge difference and actually cost us the MS game.
It is really great that those naysayers about MS, CMR, etc., have absolutely ZERO control over anything concerning UGA coaches and players. Anybody that thinks that CMR will play AM or anybody else that doesn’t(in CMR’s opinion) give UGA the best chance of winning doesn’t know beans about CMR or MOST OTHER COACHES for reasons that should be obvious to even the the least informed blogger which surely include Zackariah and his ilk.

You are a DGD sir. On the subject of Lattimore, I think this is one of the biggest questions yet to be answered. The S.C. fans (most of them) think he will “gash ” Ga.s D like he did last year. Tearing an ACL is Catastrophic! An athelete has to have confidence in his or her wheels. I tore mine and trust me, it sucked! There’s no guarantee, that Lattimore will be the same back. I hope he fully recovers because he seems like a great young man, but will he be as awesome as he was or will this effect his power game? I would rather S.C. be at full strength so their whiney fans can’t make a bunch of excuses when we kick their asses in Columbia…

Don’t kid yourselves. I know the SC game is important, and will be tough, but Florida is STILL our biggest game in the conference. Should we have a better team than them this season? Absolutely. But we did several times in the past 20 years (1992, 2002, 2003, 2005 especially come to mind) and still found a way to lose to them. Until we put together a few wins in a row over them, they should still be our main focus.

Until we can run the ball at will ( see Bama, offense nothing special, but gets 3 to 6 yards on ground at will, thus holds on to the ball for long drives and always a fresh defense) we will struggle to win more that 9 or 10 games with the 2-3 best teams on our schedule beating us.

With all of this great quarterbacks we are recruiting, we should not have a pre season “question mark” at the QB position. I can hear it now( Verni lunquist, “It’s Geogia vs Clempson. Pretty sad state of affairs in Athens when we have a coach that seems to be happy with the fact we can win the SEC East but not beat a decent team on our schedule- no mention of being blown out in the title game, nor losing the bowl game by blowing a good lead. He just reverts back to “we won the SEC east” and most of the fan base gets a happy and excited about that. Hopefully this year we can spare ourselves the embarrassment of another blowout and not get there to begin with. As long as Murray is the captain of this ship all we will never beat a decent team on our schedule. Like it or not, SC WAS the best team in the east- we just happened to back into the game.

We have reason to be optimistic this year! We’ve got a backfield full of studs, Murray’s got a pretty good arm, and we have plenty of playmakers at WR. We need the play calling to put up big scores on each opponent. There shouldn’t be any reason why we can’t score 35 on everyone on our schedule this year. Our 5th ranked defense should stop every team we play. We have to execute! Summer camp will definitely be interesting, we got some studs coming in! All eager for playing time, should be fun as hell! Remember we don’t have to rely on one running back. It’s gonna be Awesome Baby!!!

It’s a foregone conclusion that UGA will finish with 8 or 9 wins due to 5 areas:
1- Aaron Murray
0-9 vs. ranked teams, 4-10 vs. winning teams, nuff said
2- Special Teams
last in conference in punt & kick return and field goal percentage
3- Defense
last in conference in scoring and red zone defense against ranked teams
4- Handling Expectations
Richt loses more games the next year all 4 times he has won the Easy at UGA
5- Huge loss of O-Line experience
UGA has the bottom 12 in the NCAA in experience on the O-Line (31 combined starts). 8 out of 10 times, when you are bottom 12 in returning o-line experience, you lose more games the next season. Losing 3 o-lineman to the NFL will prove to be a catastrophe.

But even though we drop 3 next year, Murray will be in the film room after all three losses looking at the game film to see which receiver took the wrong route, or which person on the OLine didnt block or which running back did something or perhaps why the defense didnt hold when Murray turned the ball over on our 1 yard line

1. Richt is 0-2 vs. Spurrier since 2009.
2. Richt has never beat Florida consecutively at UGA and has only won 3 out of 11 match ups
3. UGA will face 9 teams that finished in the top 30 in pass defense
4. UGA doesn’t win turnover battle in big games (0-4 in 2012 against ranked teams in TO battle)
5. Defense is missing key players due to suspensions, arrests, etc.
6. UGA offense loses #1 deep threat Mitchell
7. Crowell, Gurley, Marshall, have a combined 9 games of experience (passblocking???)
8. 80% of strength & conditioning staff left, too many new faces, new 1st year systems to learn
9. No depth in secondary for 1st few games, or o-line for the season, 1 injury will cost the season

DawginLex, before we get all full of ourselves, of the last 3 years we have lost more than 4 games 2 of those 3 and last year the ONLY reason we won 10 is we avoided LSU, Bama and Arkie. Fla and UT were WAY down. We came within ONE play of a loss to Vandy and KY. 10 wins looks pretty until you look at who we beat. I cant take heart in beating losing teams or a team barly above 500 when we are 0-9 vs Top 20 and 4-10 against teams with a WINNING record. I am just sayin…..no room for alot of smack talk on our part. If the past is any indication, my bet would be 9-3 MAYBE 10-2 if Murray has made any kind of progress and cuts his turnovers,

If the running game could be more productive I do not think Murray would have to throw so often. Again, it is the Oline that creates the holes for the running game and also lets the QB throw with less pressure. If the defense controls the line the running game fails and the passes become more risky.

Dont get me wrong, I love Coach Dooley but help me understand why we are naming the stadium (or field) after Vince Dooley. He was a great coach but the fact remains compared to other coaches of his time and current, what did he do that would warrent a field being named after him. If we look closely, CMR actually has a better record at the same point of his career and MORE SEC championships. With the exception of 1 NC in 25 years (again, look at some of the other coaches of his time) I am not sure thats the right decision. A statue is great. I think to have a field named for you, you would have to accomplish far more.

I am so tired of ignorant bumpkins blasting the UGa football schedule. About 5-6 years ago we were beating LSU, BAMA and stomping Arkansas. The tough teams were easily FL and Tenn. The league has a mandatory rotation….and UGa is lucky they are on the easier side of the rotation…and FL and Tenn are trying to rebuild their programs. Also, take a close look at the “out of conference” games for every SEC team…..they are all against weaker teams. Yes, Ga doesn’t play a tough team this year, but they took on Boise State last year….a top 5 team.

I set in Sanford stadium last sept and watched Murry throw accurate TD passes, but literally give game to SC when it was on the line. I also watched Garcia throw an early interception (horrible toss-receiver open just threw directly to DB) and get bailed out by Alshon and the strong running game. I woul dhave much prefered to have Murray over Garcia, but that all foes for moot when Murray makes the game changing mistake (actually a couple of them). His arm is good, problem with intangibles.

The continuous gnashing of teeth… Murray hit Orson Charles and Malcolm Mitchell in stride in the SECC Game. I was sitting on the 50 Yardline. Had those two catches been made…a lot tighter game it would have been. Unless you expect Aaron Murray to walk the ball down the field to the receivers he couldn’t have made better throws. How many times will Bobo call a draw play on 3rd and long. How many times will the O-line wave at D-linemen as they blow past them? I was calling the plays out in the 3rd quarter before the snap because I knew Bobo’s play-calling. If I knew it, what do you think a seasoned D-Coordinator was doing? Yep… that’s why we continue to lose.

You speak the truth, Bill King. No matter how many games are lost because of it. And when Murray leaves, we will be in the same position as when Stafford left – no experienced back-up QB. But I am sure Coach Richt knows what he is doing. After all, we are paying him $3 million per year, so he must win a lot of championships.

They win the easy games they were supposed to win, lose some that they were supposed to win (Michigan State), and lose the ones they are expected to lose. Not to mention, nearly losing to Vandy when they were rated much higher than them. When was the last time they were picked to lose a game and they WON???? And the hard-fought ones like Florida 2010, they flub the game (Bobo) by throwing a pass into coverage and having it intercepted rather than kick a field goal.

What Richt should do is to give Mason an opportunity to get some playing time, if he shines, his opportunity should increase. A lot of people don’t like a two QB system, I have no problem with it, seems like it keeps everyone on their toes.

I see Murray thinks it is more important to make light of uniform changes via Twitter than to get his head in the game. Murray, like other players, have not been around long enough to understand how important tradition is, and getting creamed in national TV games such as Boise in 2011 carries a lot more negative implications than they realize. It is not the fans moaning on message boards after losses like the Boise/Power Ranger game that is the important thing, but the perception of UGA Football by opposing teams and the national media that hurts Georgia’s program, and yes it is an embarrassment. I am pretty sure that Murray’s motivation for his Tweet about the bogus pink unis came from the displeasure shown by the fan base concerning the Pro Combat uniforms worn last season. Murray needs to be spending his spare time studying the film of his screwups, stupid interceptions and fumbles that cost UGA two big games last season.
Richt needs to make it absolutely clear to every UGA player that puts on a Georgia uniform what it means to represent UGA on the football field. One of my biggest gripes about Richt is that he appears to think that the players wants and whims are more important than what is expected of him as the head football coach at the University of Georgia. The latter is the one paying his large salary that he is not earning lately.

Good morning my friend, I just wanted to reply to your 10:00 am post. I think all Bulldog fans feel pain when our football team fails to win a game, any game. It seems like the bigger games I saw last year were at a party and the losses were hard to digest. The fact that a 19yr. Old playing on twitter instead of practicing football is a little disturbing though. He does eat, drink and sleep football. He needs a little A.M. time just like you and me. I think he will be fine this year if he doesn’t let all the so-called fans that piled-on him this year effect him. For the good of our team, please help support Arron Murray this year unless he screws the pooch. Richt is going with him until he shows he hasn’t grown any this year as our QB…

Dawginlex, either debate these issues reasonably and cut the hate talk, or just move on down the road. You not only embarrass yourself, but everyone else attempting to support this program.

Don’t be too hard on Nancy. Her lunch with the girls was canceled yesterday at the last minute and that put her in a really foul mood. She so looks forward to her glass of wine with her salad. It helps take the edge off of the day and she is usually much more civil towards people.

My feelings also, Richt talks about the “Georgia Way” constantly, yet demonstrates very little of what I see as “traditional professionalism” in my mind. Richt is perceived as a “weak” Leader, I think it’s more than perception.

I see a real split in the Doghouse. More fans support CMR than not, but if we have another poor, undisiplined year full of transfers, suppensions and sloppy play, then I imagine the paradigm will change out of Coach Richts favor. I hope for UGAs sake, Coach Richt sees the whole picture, and our team decides to play hard for four full quarters and every now and then, have the ball bounce our way. We can’t rely on luck! Good teams DON’T RELY ON LUCK!!!

Because so much money comes into Georgia because of the football team , Mike Adams was more involved in the athletic departments business than he should have; Adams did a great job as President of the University but Georgia has an AD that controls the sports teams and too many bosses is not good. For me it is significant that Adams is retiring after 2013 because McGarity will now be allowed to get our sports programs back to a top ten national ranking. Coaching changes has hurt Georgia in resent years and is why CMR was not replaced .
Bobo was sent to the Jon Gruden school to learn something that would help him be a better Coordinator . If we have the same problem as we did last year, the hot seat talk will not go back on Richt near as much as questioning if Bobo has the ability to be an effective coordinator. IMHO I still think Bobo is better utilized at Georgia as a Quarterback coach and as a recruiter. Also, Will Friend seems to be a very good coach but for some reason has a lot of trouble closing the deal with big name recruits choosing Georgia. Us losing Young last year was huge and if we have the same problem this year in getting the top offensive linemen to come to Georgia I think a change is needed.

You are wrong if you think that Saban, Miles, and Spurrier would not play Murray…these coaches would never have allowed the OL to tank like it had/has, nor would they have allowed the OC to continue to call for a run up the middle on 1st, a runup the middle on second, setting up and obvious passing play on 3rd…as anyone knows, when a pass is put up in an obvious situation 3 things can happen and two of them are bad…CMR made changes on the D side of the ball and looked how that has turned around in two years, yet the O is still a mess…Bobo is a work in progress, and Murray is taking a beating against the better coached teams…look at CMB and the O that he puts out on the field…Murray is just fine

The “Georgia Way” simply means that the school has mediocre academics, with athletes who are functionally illiterate, drive while intoxicated, and beat up women.

Stop whinning about the schedule. Soon are later everone play each other. Facts is UGA isn’t going through a rebuild this season, they should be nasty, especially on “D”. I know some of you think I’m in left field with my blog, but that the way I see it. The West want be the force they were a year ago and the East will be much improved from top to bottom.

Ole Yeller,
You are correct. Just a few years ago LSU and Bama were thankful they didn’t have to play FL, Tenn and UGa. In fact, last year they played the easy teams in the East and avoided UGa and SC…..so the knife cuts both ways. I totally agree with you….anyone criticizing the UGa schedule literally doesn’t have a clue as to how the system works.

Here’s hoping Bobo learned something from Gruden. The OL will be better in 2012, I do not think Richt would say that he has seen the OL making strides if it were not. The urgency will be greater in fall camp for OL improvement, and they will continue to fight to get better against one of the best D lines in the nation, and should get better for it. Running game being non existent in most big games, along with no viable placekicker put the Dawgs in a real hurt in 2011. I realize that Richt did not want to kick Walsh to the curb after he had been a pretty decent kicker early on. He actually was trying his best to give Walsh a chance to redeem himself big in the bowl game, and Richt really thought that he would make the kick and go out on a big note. Georgia’s field goal unit should be back on par in 2012. Maybe THIS season was the one that Dooley was talking about when he said everyone will be pleased with the football team. The kickoff problems got fixed by the NCAA, moving up to thirty five. Now fix punt teams coverage/and idiot decisions to kick to best returners in nation with game on the line. Fix all this and Dawgs are probably undefeated in 2012, finally. I still say watch out for the Vols.
