Ricky Lowe runs for a surprise touchdown during the G-Day game. (Johnny Crawford / AJC)
Let’s jump right into a sampling of recent Junkyard Mail …
Ken Crow writes: Bill, I really enjoy the Blawg and your down-the-middle approach to fandom. You’re not afraid to criticize when you think it’s warranted, but you remain supportive of Coach Richt and the program and don’t continually harp on the negatives. I also appreciate your obvious love for the school and your hometown of Athens. I really wanted to get to the Classic City for G-Day this year but wasn’t able to because of some family stuff. I enjoyed your report from the game and was encouraged by what you said about the quarterbacks, running backs and defense. So who surprised you most at G-Day?
Thanks, Ken. While I thought Jay Rome’s long touchdown catch-run was the highlight of the day, it wasn’t particularly surprising, as I’d expected him to do well. And I was pleasantly surprised by the play of the starting offensive line. But I think the biggest surprise for me probably was the play of linebacker Ramik Wilson, who led the Red team defense with seven tackles (two for loss) and an interception that he returned 19 yards. And, of course, there was the play where Reuben Faloughi knocked the ball away from Black QB Parker Welch and unheralded senior defensive lineman Ricky Lowe grabbed the ball in midair and ran it back 62 yards for a touchdown, probably the highlight of his playing career at UGA. Those are the moments that make G-Day games fun.
Ed from Avondale Estates writes: So I’ve heard [Isaiah] Crowell has grown up and looks great, [Keith] Marshall is the real deal and Boo Malcome had a great spring. I’ve even gotten the position-of-the-day updates on Richard Samuel. Why no [Todd] Gurley updates? I have high hopes for that kid and he’s gotten no spring press. What’s the word?
The word is he’s still in high school. Gurley was not one of the UGA signees who enrolled early this year. But the coaches are very high on his potential and while he’ll start out preseason camp in August behind all the other tailbacks, I have a feeling his talent will show pretty quickly. Perhaps even enough for him to avoid taking a redshirt season in a crowded tailback corps.
Richard Hong writes: I wish someone would write an article that would explain why the QB position is not a wide open competition to see who should be the starter for this year. Sorry, but my untrained eyes just don’t see why people think [Aaron] Murray is such a good QB. He throws a lot of interceptions, makes a lot of bad decisions, can’t get out of the pocket when he needs to, fumbles when he does run and CANNOT throw the ball on the run. So please, would someone tell me what I’m not seeing?
On a similar note, Michael Jones writes: I like Aaron Murray but I am concerned with his accuracy and his trend of turning the ball over in big games that absolutely kill the Dawgs. Have you heard of outside the box training for Murray to get him to be more accurate and protecting the football? He got us to the SEC Championship game, I just want to see him make the next step.

There's a reason national sports media are high on Aaron Murray. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
I know there’s a segment of Bulldogs fandom that’s very down on Murray and convinced that Mark Richt and Mike Bobo are blindly letting him hold on to the starting quarterback’s job despite the obvious talents of backups Hutson Mason and Christian LeMay. Some folks even believe there’s some sort of “conspiracy” to keep Murray in a job he doesn’t deserve. I suppose some fans are remembering how Jim Donnan fell in love with Quincy Carter and ran off all his other quarterbacks. But this situation is nothing like that one. There’s a reason Murray made some All-SEC teams and is routinely cited by national sports media as one of the best QBs in the conference. He was the SEC’s No. 2 passer, throwing for 3,149 yards and 35 touchdowns a season ago. He ranked second in passing yards per game, second in total offense and fourth in passing efficiency. Of the returning quarterbacks in FBS football, only Southern Cal’s Matt Barkley threw for more touchdowns (37) in 2011 than Murray. Yes, Murray threw too many interceptions last season and had a couple of very costly fumbles. Richt himself has noted Murray needs to do a better job of taking care of the football. But as I wrote when we discussed Murray in January, the argument can be made that his tendency to fumble or throw a pick 6 at the worst possible time might be at least in part attributable to the sketchy protection he was getting from Georgia’s erratic offensive line and, in the last couple of games, the lack of a consistent running attack. This year he’ll again open the season behind a questionable OL, but he should have a much more potent, consistent group of running backs, which Bobo has said he thinks will make Murray a better quarterback. And sheer experience should help Murray make better on-field decisions and improve his ball security. He’s a good on-field leader and showed in last year’s Florida game that he can make big-time throws in tough situations, especially those two fourth-down touchdowns. I know, the knock on him is that he’s yet to beat a really good team. And I’ll agree that Mason and LeMay both show a lot of potential. But, frankly, from what I’ve seen so far, neither one is ready yet to supplant Murray.
Devon Wade writes: Bill, I am a former Tucker Tiger and if you know anything about Ga. high school football you will know that Tucker High School has been a UGA pipeline for several years now. It is most definitely Dawg Country. However, when I graduated high school I landed at a small liberal arts college right outside of Columbia, Mo. (right in the middle of Tiger Country). My roommate during my entire time in college is a die-hard Mizzou fan, and of course I am a Dawg through and through. We have always joked around about whose team would win if the two ever faced. Well lo and behold the semester AFTER we graduate they become division rivals and I know he has been salivating with the recent suspensions of key players going into that game in Columbia (which I will be at with him). I am still confident that between now and then CMR can get some players to fill in the holes in the secondary and I think our front seven can get enough pressure to make [Mizzou quarterback James] Franklin more uncomfortable than he has ever been. I believe our defense is still more talented than theirs even without several starters. Should I have reason to still be confident that we can pick up the W in Columbia minus key players? Appreciate your consideration. Big fan of the Blawg.
Thanks. I tend to agree with you, Devon. While Georgia won’t enter the game against Missouri at full-strength, I think the Dogs’ defensive front seven will be formidable. And from what I saw last year of Mizzou’s defense, I don’t believe it’s yet SEC-ready.
Richard Judy writes: Enjoyed your comment about my hero, Fred Birchmore. I am a ’73 UGA grad, and just after graduating I hiked the Appalachian Trail from Maine back to Georgia. Fred and [son] Danny read an article I wrote in the old AJC Sunday Magazine and asked me to counsel them on their upcoming Georgia to Maine AT thru-hike. I was invited into the Birchmore home and quickly discovered what special people these were. Fred and Danny needed no advice from me, but they made me feel like a real friend. A few years back, when my daughter was a J-school student at UGA, she contacted Fred about doing a story for the old UGAzine publication. He treated her like royalty and said very kind things to her about her old man. Fred was a class act, the kind of man who deserved a century of high-quality living.
Thanks, Richard. You’re right that the Birchmores are a very special family and Athens and UGA are both much better off for them having been there.

Bill, before our opening game last season at the Dome, did you think Boise State was “SEC-ready?” How about when we played UCF? MSU?
The fact that we play in the SEC means nothing, if UGA can’t carry it weight for the conference – and we haven’t in the second half of Richt’s tenure. We once represented the SEC well. We haven’t since ‘07?

If Murray would do two things right it would cut down or his bad plays and turnovers by 70-80%:
1- Run the ball when nobody is open or if the defense is giving you 5 to 8 yards, tuck it and run it. BEFORE, BEFORE, BEFORE you are hit slide on the ground. DO NOT LET THE DEFENSE COME INTO CONTACT WITH YOU BEFORE YOU ARE DOWN.Complete
2- Complete 80% of your screen passes. Murray probably has the worst completion ratio with screen passes in Georgia history and when he does complete one it is lobed so far away from the intended receiver, usually the Fullback, that he has to make an acrobatic one handed catch which allows the defense to catch up and stop the play for a loss or the pass is picked off or falls incomplete.
Murray has put together impressive statistics but most of the numbers come from scoring 50 plus points on division 2 teams. It does Georgia no good to play Murray more than one Quarter against teams that we are blowing out. That is when Mason and LeMay should be playing to get experience so we can’t use that as an excuse for poor Quarterback play after Murray has left.

It just kills me when fans say stuff like this! You don’t think Richt and Bobo want to win? You don’t think they know how to evaluate QB talent? I could see questions about some of the play calling, but those guys have seen a QB or two in their day! Murray is a great QB, not even a good one. He isn’t perfect, but he is a tremendous talent. Look at those stats, not that they are everything. He is right at the top, but look at our protection stats. We were the worst in the SEC except for Kentucky. So while Murray had the worst protection of any decent SEC team, he produced great stats. Tom Brady isn’t perfect when he is under pressure.

Wish they would let Mason start a few tough games so these Murray haters would stop bashing. I bet Mason would get sacked and throw more pics than my 90 year old grandmother because of his inability to scramble and terrible line protection. Everyone loves to be a armchair coach even though these coaches are with these guys almost every day and know which one is better.

And just to be clear: we were second to worst in number of sacks allowed. However, without Murray’s quickness and elusiveness I suspect we would have occupied the basement all by ourselves. We were also terrible in tackles for loss allowed. Honestly, put Murray behind Alabama’s line last year, and he might have won the Heisman! He wouldn’t if he’d gone to Bama because they don’t pass enough, but if Bama’s line played for CMR, look out. IMHO.

One more point that I’ll agree with 7576 on–the whole offense needs to practice screen passes until he and they can do it right 99% of the time in their sleep. There is no excuse for our lousy screen execution last year. We would have beaten SC if we could have executed screens for just one.

richie has a big tendency to stay with the most senior QB. Stafford’s talent made it clear he should be an early starter. Murray is OK, but I don’t think Mason or LeMay are getting much of a shot.

Many teams would not have won if a certain player had not have signed. Oh, BTW #34 didn’t have a lot to do with that pass from Buck Belue to Lindsay Scott! I’v said this before. Murray want make the plays in the SEC that he made at Plant City High School in Flordia. The compitiion is much better. I think he need to forgrt about what he did in high school and move up the ladder to the SEC. When the “O” line starts knocking the big guys back on their heel maybe some you folks will get off their back. Trust me they will be better and the best of best want be here until August this year. I agree that Murray is a very good Quarterback but as I have stated it doesn’t help Georgia any to have Murray even play against division 2 teams. If Georgia had let Murray play the last 6 games 3 years ago instead of Cox he would have been ready for the 2010 year.
If we had one stat people would understand a lot of Murray’s problem. If we compared this one thing of Murray’s against the great Quarterbacks like Griffin of Baylor, Luck at Sanford, or Moore at BS and even Stafford when he was at Georgia you would see that a lot of Murray’s problems comes from the fact that he is too slow in getting rid of the ball. Great Quarterbacks know what they are going to do with the ball before it is hiked and if that falls apart they immediately do something else. Just get rid of the ball or run it. Murray is too slow making something happen and is thrown for a loss. I agree that our offensive line has not been very good the last few years but you can’s blame everything on them.

This must be the same bad fans that been a trying to hot sit Coach Richt. But Coach Richt and Murray is loaded up to run team all to Dome where we beats Bammer or LSUers this time and that means BCS champs that SEC winning streak. I wish the bad fans would stop railing om Dawgs and gets behind program. Coach Richt is Christians and deserves support specially when McG got to stand up Adams and tells him stop choking recruiting with the pointy head rules. I sick and tired of Sabans doing roster manegement and Adams keeping Coach Richt from its to. But that why we got to support Coach Richt in putting Adams and pointy heads in palce.

I agree that the competition should be wide open a the beginning of spring practice thru summer practice and the one who shows the most gets the start. If it’s AM … fine… coaches make the evaluation and name the starter prior to gam one. Creating a fierce competition makes them all better.
BUT NO… CMR annnounces that AM is #1…. announces red shirt of HM….. ALL other positions are competing for starting spots but AM and the whole team knows that the QB is predetermined. Dont like MR’s strategy on this one bit and dont think it can help the competition and team attitude…

He was only a sophomore last year, so give him a break. hopefully his 2 best years are ahead of him. Look at the SEC Title game. He was putting balls right on our recievers finger tips and they couldnt catch a cold that game. He played well enough to win the SEC Title. Our Recievers are what worries me.

7576, I think you can put most of it on them. They weren’t just bad on sacks, but they were also bad on TFLs. It isn’t just Murray, as both Mason and LeMay were sacked a good bit. The better defense of our line is who we played against I think. We played a lot of top Ds. Murray has a very quick release, and I wouldn’t trade him for anybody. If anything, I think he has a problem sometimes getting rid of it too quickly. If I were giving him feedback (caveat, just a fan and I wasn’t even a QB) I would say he needs to watch forcing it in sometimes. That can be his greatest strength, and it has cost him some, too. He sticks the ball where others fear to tread, so just a little better judgment there. He needs to work on screens a lot, and sometimes he locks in and throws into coverage when he has a back open in the flats, or a TE open over the middle. Pretty much all QBs do that occasionally. But, we are all entitled to our opinions, and you express yours well 7576. I have no illusions about my insights into UGA football. CDawg, I live among the Gators and catch them on TV. I do have a nice wide screen with an HD DVR. Granted, some things you do see better between the hedges, but I think I can see some things better with HD slomo. Finally fellows, don’t forget that Murray was inserted in the fist two sets, and then he was pulled until the last couple of minutes in the 1st half. 2nd half was very sporadic. The starting QB wasn’t the focus of GDay. It was an opportunity for the backups to work, and they both looked great, but clearly backups for now. One injury, and that could change quickly, so I’m glad they are progressing. I do like both of them a lot.

Bill, I agree about Murray. Lost in all the criticism is the fact you have a kid who is making these mistakes as a freshman and sophomore. So he aids in losing four games last year…well three of those teams had senior QBs two of which (Moore of BSU and Cousins of MSU) were two of the best in the country and high NFL prospects. Dont forget droped TDs in the LSU game, and special teams blunders in MSU and South Carolina games as well as the lackluster running game and OL you mentioned. Those losses were a team effort, not Aaron Murray.
His stats are better than Stafford over the first two seasons and are likely the best in UGA history for first two years. Remember how Stafford had similar turnover issues his first season and against UF in 2008. He will be a year older and wiser next season. Putting Mason or LeMay in is basically starting over. Its one thing to look good in practice, but completely different when the game is fully on your shoulders.

You anti-Murray people are delusional! The coaches know exactly what they have. If Murray wasn’t clearly our best QB, then the race would be open. Look at Greene/Shockley or even back to Stafford’s first season where they started Cox over Stafford one game (the one after Colorado). Murray has broken about every record at Georgia as a sophomore. Yes, he had some tough games against high level defenses, but the fact that our O-Line and RBs gave him no help was a bigger reason for his struggles. I’m so sick of all the UGA critics who think that inserting a backup QB and having Richt run around yelling and acting scary is the solution to our problems. This kid is considered by people who cover the game to be one of the top QBs in the country and a Heisman candidate. Go back and play video games and stop trying to talk serious FB!

Stats, as most fans know, can be misleading. Bill has tried to excuse Murray’s poor decision making by putting down the o-line. Fact is the interception he threw in the bowl game that turned all the momentum was well protected – he had time. He simply threw the ball directly to the MSU player. This is unacceptable conduct – given the situation. We were dominating a decent, but not great Big Ten (there are actually 12 teams in the Big Ten) team. A team from the weakest BCS conference in the nation went on to beat us. Any decent QB would have easily won that game with our team, including the o-line. The only stat that counts is Ws and Ls. Murray has yet to perform well for an entire game against a strong opponent. He usually looks great the first half and anything but great the second half. Bobo may not be the greatest play caller in America, but he has never told Murray to throw the thing to the other team. That’s on Murray. Need I mention his inexcusable failure to protect the ball when sacked by Clowney in the South Carolina game? we were clearly the better TEAM that day but Murray lost the game.
Now, he may be the best we’ve got, but Mason looks worthy of at least being put in the game when it becomes clear to most folks that Murray has gone into a funk. My complaint is the unwillingness to even give the guy a chance when it is obvious Murray is confused, or whatever causes him to have those “what the hell just happened” moments.

For those of you that say Mason/LeMay should start over Murray clearly know very little about football. It’s like saying Mike Bobo would have started over Matt Stafford. Not even close. Murray has better arm, more knowledge of playbook, more experience, and has shown the toughness needed to make it through the season as a SEC quarterback. If not for his height (6-1), he would be drafted – possibly as soon as next year.
Dont forget, Richt and Bobo have directly coached 2 Heisman trophy winners, a Number 1 NFL draft pick, and the all time winning-est QB in college football history (at least for a few years until McCoy beat Greene’s record). Not to mention they both played the position and were 2nd string to some of the greatest QBs to ever play the game. It’s safe to say that they know a heck of a lot more than any of us and certainly more than all of you “arm chair” quarterbacks.
I will admit that Richt and Bobo may be loyal to a fault – but it’s not with Aaron Murray, it’s with Hutson Mason. They will be starting Hutson in his Senior year when there will be a more talented QB on the roster (Bryce Ramsey). Ramsey has the same tools and skills as Matt Stafford. The only reason Mason is red-shirting is because HE REQUESTED IT from the coaches so he could have that separation from Murray and have one year where he could start. Trust me, if AM gets seriously injured – and misses time, Mason’s in the game, not LeMay.
There are a lot more that causes interceptions than accuracy. Aaron Murray won the most accurate QB at the top QB camp 3 times – as a sophmore and junior he won when he wasn’t even competing, he was just there as a ball boy (look it up). He also won it during his Senior year. Your accuracy arguments are completely off base and more inaccurate than any QB we have on the roster. Listen to Richt and Bobo, the majority of his problem is when he tries to do too much. Leave it in their hands, there is a reason they are doing what they are doing and you are doing what you are doing.
There are 3 things that MUST happen in the off season, summer camp, and throughout the season for Georgia to have that “special” season we all want. #1 – OL must gel and play well. The potential is there, we just have to bring it together #2 – we must stay healthy in the defensive backfield, #3 – we have to hope that Morgan and Barber are good as advertised (you can’t be weak in special teams to win an SEC championship).
I believe that LeMay transfers after next year (not in spring 2013, but spring 2014). Mark this down, QB starters over the next 6 years
2012 – Murray
2013 – Murray
2014 – Mason
2015 – Ramsey
2016 – Ramsey
2017 – Ramsey (if we are lucky that he doesn’t go pro early)

I forgot to mention the fact that we are blessed to have a backup in Mason that can get the job done. Hopefully we won’t have to go to him, because that means Murray is injured.

Aaron Murray does not deserve to be the starter just by virtue of being the incumbent. Every position should be up for grabs every single year. No one should be given comfort.

The most impressive thing about Murray is all those top 25 teams he has beaten. Mason has not beat any of them. He has certainly had his shot though, hasn’t he?
