Replacing the likes of Cordy Glenn on the offensive line remains a work in progress for the 2012 Dogs. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
While Bulldogs fans did come out of G-Day reassured that the defensive front will continue to be a major Georgia strength and that prospects are encouraging at running back, backup quarterback and tight end, most of the major questions hanging over Mark Richt’s 2012 team won’t be answered until the fall.
The biggest of those uncertainties remains the rebuilding of the offensive line, because of the impact that has on other aspects of the game: running, passing, quarterback protection. While I was pleasantly surprised with how well the tentative first-team OL held up against one of the best defensive lines in the nation on G-Day, there still was inconsistency and not much depth — the second-team OL looked pretty woeful. Most observers see true freshman John Theus having a real chance to start come September if he lives up to advance billing.
On the other side of the ball, the linebacking corps looked solid and should be able to sustain a possible suspension of Alec Ogletree, but we didn’t really see anything in the spring game to alleviate the worries about how the secondary will handle Missouri with starters possibly suspended, since designated two-way player Malcolm Mitchell wasn’t able to play because of another hamstring problem.
And while speedster Justin Scott-Wesley showed some potential, we’ll still have to wait and see how the receiving corps handles having Mitchell, its biggest playmaker, spending time on defense.
And, of course, one of the biggest problem areas that needs shoring up — special teams — won’t really be addressed fully until August, when the likely new punter and placekicker join the team. While coaches still have to address who’ll be returning punts and kickoffs, the larger issue that must be resolved is coverage, where Georgia stunk last year, ranking 116th nationally in punt coverage and 88th in kickoff coverage, with a tendency to give up big returns at the worst possible times.
Spring work on special teams was mainly concerned with drills designed to see who’ll be populating the coverage teams come fall, Richt told the Athens Banner-Herald. “The goal in the spring for the special teams was to get a lot of guys involved and do a lot of drill work that will help us. First of all, evaluate, ‘Can a guy do what we’re going to ask him to do. Can he get off a block. Can he tackle in space? Can he protect a kick?’ We were just wanting everybody to understand that everybody and anybody could end up on a special team — a starter, a second-teamer, whatever it is.”
Kirk Olivadotti, who oversees the kickoff-coverage unit, indicated that in terms of approach, it won’t be so much wholesale change as tweaking coverage and changing up personnel.
Hopefully, that’ll be enough, but I’m more encouraged by Richt’s contining emphasis this offseason on the need to up the Dogs’ game in special teams play, which hasn’t always been a high priority during his tenure.
“My guess is, we will have more live kicking reps in the fall than we’ve had in a while,” Richt said, though he allowed that “some of that is because we’re going to be breaking in a new punter and a new kicker. They need to be under pressure as much as possible, and it’s hard to create that pressure unless you’re doing some live situations.”
Offensive line. Secondary depth. Special teams. All three could be make-or-break areas for the Dogs this season and the picture unfortunately remains pretty hazy with all of them. Any other lingering concerns you have coming out of spring practice?

good plan …don’t work on the special teams now for we have the fall to resolve this weakness. The truth is you don’t have enough quality folks that can man the special teams at this time due to roster management failure. Signing friends of good players will get you sooner or later but it’s what the preacher man does best. Please continue your hype for we’re getting close to August and you UGA fans know what that means….Failure to play at the level you talk…..again.

I’m puzzled at the blanket statement that special teams have not been a priority to Richt, when in fact he uses more scholarships than most in that area, and as a whole has had some of the better special teams in the league throughout his career. Having issues here and there is hardly an indication of a low priority is it? If so, then we can assume it’s not a big priority for a lot of SEC coaches because they have all had issues with various aspect of special team at one time or another.

Has anyone heard more on how Missouri’s QB is recovering from shoulder surgery? He missed most of their spring, but is expected to be back in time for the first game of the season. That being said, that’s a pretty tough operation to overcome. Not so sure he’ll be at 100% by Sept. 8, if he plays at all.

Transfers, suspensions and dismissal of players always hurts but when young players do not improve over a two or three year period due to continued poor coaching, preparation, conditioning and training, our program will always be thin in most if not all areas. Far too much dependency on young players to come in and “shore up” weaknesses in all phases of the game for the Dawgs to be competitive at the highest levels of the SEC.. I love ‘em as much as anyone but unfortunately those are the facts.

I’m just asking because right now I am a little stumped. Most of the blog writers keep writing about how good the O-Line was last year and they will be hard to replace.
I just was not impressed at all over the O-Line last year. I thought they got shoved around a good bit.
Someone has to explain to me why our O-Line was so good last year? I’m not saying that the O-Line this year will be world beaters, but my guess that there will be an improvement from last year. Am I off base with that remark?

Any other concern? I thought Murray had another bad Spring. Hopefully, he’ll learn how to throw more td’s than he did in the 3 Spring games (3), and more accurate than he was in the 3 Spring games (50% accurate).
But, Mason & Lemay looked great, just hope Richt doesn’t wait too late to make the change at QB if Aaron continues to struggle in the Fall like he did in the Spring.

I have asked the same thing. Anderson was a 330 LB guy who could not move laterally. Glenn is a big loss but if you remember, he did not start showing progress until late in his sophomore season. Jones can be replaced by andrews eventually.
The problem is they are freshmen. We need them to play NOW. In a perfect world, there would be upperclassmen playing and allowing these guys to learn, get stronger and wait. These guys did not even get to redshirt.

Does make you wonder if Richt’s stubborn loyalty to Murray will cost him a National Championship this year? Murray has demonstrated a tendency to fold in big games, 2 and 10 lifetime against ranked teams, 0 & 9 against top 20 teams. This will be Richt’s best chance to win a National Championship with this schedule (no Bama, LSU or Ark, 9 starters back on defense).
Or if the lack of depth at d back and o-line will cost him an SEC Championship?
Or if Richt’s subborn loyalty to the passing game will cost him a National Championship?
Can laid back Richt get a sense of urgency that this is his best chance to win a National Championship?

Special teams to most coaches is akin to juggling bowling balls. It can be done but as soon as you look away one has landed on your foot. Special teams while “worked” on will never be top priority in Spring or fall practice. Too many other aspects of the game take precedence. Just the way it is.

I said this before and now again, how this years team may perform you just have to look at how they performed last season minus who they lost to graduation, etc. Based on that I think it’ll be a struggle
for the Offense especially running the ball. Murray will be pressured and the results the same as last season w/int’s and fumbles. Whether that will cost games depends on the defense and who they’re playing at the time. Sorry, don’t see any light at the end of the tunnel just yet.

Is there some way to use all 3 QB’s in certain situations, playing to their strengths? For example, Lemay has shown over 2 G-Days, he’s clutch at end of games. Murray has the strongest arm for hail mary situations, or 3rd and long. Mason is the most accurate if you needed to go to a short, ball control passing game or Mason has the quickest release if the defenses are sacking Murray too much.
Is there someway to use Crowell, Gurley, Marshall, Malcome and Samuel, playing to their strengths? Malcome for inside 5 yard line. Crowell on own side of field in running situations. Samuel as a passblocker or 3rd and short. Gurley and Crowell and Marshall as speed guys on screen passes or in the slot in spread formations.

My guess the ones on here saying that never played in a real game compared to a scrimmage and know the totally different type of atmosphere each has. Scrimmages you are so much more relaxed and will more than likely do better. Murray was up against the 1st string defense as well.

That’s a good way of looking at it, Red Stick. I love how these Murray haters say that HE loses games to ranked opponents when Georgia’s main problem is in the trenches. I was encouraged by the play of some offensive linemen at G-Day, but depth is still a serious concern.

Problems come to head for your past sins: !) Poor roster mgt: underrecruiting, loss of players, loss of top recruits in needed positions, etc!! 2) Poor S&C from previous years!! 3) The loss of the hold of the state in recruiting: due to poor seasons, the lack of production from Coach Rodney Garner, and at times, being stubborn, and saying we are UGA and don’t need to outwork the other schools for in-state recruits!! 4) And CMR holding onto underperforming coaches longer than he should: Coach Willie Martinez, Coach Dave Van Hallenger……..and maybe, guys on present staff!! If they do not beat a ranked team this year, then time to make changes!!!

Does it really matter how good the offensive line is in big games, if Murray keeps turning the ball over 3 times a game like he did against LSU and Mich St? No, it doesn’t.
Or throwing 4 interceptions for td’s in 2011 instead of taking a sack? No.

Dawg Haus, I agree and as you know any QB can be ineffective if you put enough pressure on him.
It’s not always the QB’s fault when you lose and many times the QB gets too much credit when you win.

John Theus played in a private school league in Florida. He is as slow as molasses. Coaches at his high school all-star game easily recognized this, and moved him from tackle to guard. In doing so they mercifully avoided a quarterback being decapitated. The much better left tackle prospect was Atlanta Cedar Grove’s Brandon Greene. Nick Saban recognized this and signed him for BAMA. Greene tested better than Theus in every category, is a superior athlete, and MOST IMPORTANTLY,played in a much more competitve league. Armed with this knowledge,, one can only wonder what it could be that possibly motivated Booboo and Friend to go after Theus instead. I wonder what it could be. don’t y’all? 31 years and counting. Murray was sacked 25 times in 2010, with the most experienced o-line is college football. 2011’s o-line was the biggest o-line in college or NFL, and Murray somehow got sacked 30+ times. It doesn’t matter how much experience the o-line has, Murray is going to be sacked 25-34 times a season.

Recruitment of the Offensive line players this year will determine if Will Friend makes it at Georgia. He is a really good coach but for some reason is only an average recruiter but that doesn’t mean he can’t learn how to recruit for a top SEC team. I see a lot of improvements in Georgia’s overall recruiting tactics but if recruitment for offensive line players don’t prove more fruitful McGarity will do something about it. Some will say WHAT ABOUT THEUS? Theus is coming to Georgia for one reason , he likes Mark Richt. But the lose of Young to Auburn last year was huge and may show that Friend , even though a very good coach, can’t get the job done in recruiting.

You do not have an SEC caliber offensive line. You have no offensive line depth. Any objective person couls see this. This lack of depth is going to substantially limit, YET AGAIN, what you can do on offense, especially from a physical standpoint. You simple can’t risk injury to a starter, The majority of which aren’t SEC caliber anyway. If I’m Crowell or Ken Malcolm, I running very tentavely. Hitting a hole assuming David Andrews can handle an SEC a nose tackle or worse yet, an SEC inside linebacker, could be career ending. There’s really no excuse for a program like Uga’s to be in this position YET AGAIN. But since when has anyone been held accountable up there? Who cares. Richt, Bobo, McGarity and the rest know that y’all will simply rationalize it. You’re doing it now, Suggesting that everything is ok, We’ll just start an overrated true freshman from a private school league at left tackle..Any other school, serious about competing in the SEC, having an offensive line situation such as y’all are facing,YET AGAIN, and heads are rolling, Starting with Richt’s. Any school other than UGA. 31 years and counting. And count on it being 32.

It will be 32, 33, 34, and many more years, Tide Roll, and each pre-season will be ‘their year’. Look at how they worship Todd “Choke” Grantham for his season. It’s not that hard to look good against Kentucky.
Truth of the matter is, they will not win another championship until a once in a life time player (Walker) is born in their state. And most of us have already seen that in our lifetime.

Kind of agree with the other guys.
Aaron Murray tends to struggle no matter if he has the biggest offensive line in all of football, like 2011, or the one with the most starting experience, either way, he tended to get sacked quite often, and throw far too many interceptions.

Oh boy….here I go again! For those of you that ever played the game, even in high-school, it is OBVIOUS that we let our foot slip on the o-line! Our recruiting has not been as focused as it needs to be, and we lost too many for whatever reason. Our line is NOT an upper level line, and we will NOT compete with the Alabama’s and LSU’s until they are! Not hatin’ on the kids, but I’d trade a few other good players we have for some up-front hosses! A good line makes an average QB and/or an average back look good. A sub-par line makes a great QB look bad and a great back awful, if he survives! I’m a dawg fan with the best of them, but even the novice can see we ain’t ready up front. My mantra as usual: we’ll (once again) beat the bad teams and lose to the good ones! It all starts up front, folks!

I’ve come to the conclusion, even with the NFL’s #1 offensive line, Aaron Murray would throw 10 interceptions and get sacked @30 times a season. We’ve had 2 terrific offensive lines, one had mammoth size, we’re talking bigger than ANY NFL team, and then Murray had mammoth experience. Murray struggled equally with both.

The 2nd string OL together is not suppose to look as good as the 1st string. That’s why they are the 2nd string. Now, plug in the best 1 or 2 players on the second string with the 1st string and I bet it will still look good. I believe the line will be okay. A total beast with a nasty attitude will be plugged into that line this Summer. I think Damian Swann and Mitchell will be very good at corner. The suspensions may be a blessing in disguise. I believe Mitchell will be soon be one of the best CB in college in the next year. There was a reason he was more sought after by schools as a corner and was rated the best in the country with Swann ranked right behind him. Scott-Wesley has the speed and the talent to be what Mitchell was last year at receiver. What worries me the most is Mitchell’s hamstring that keeps pulling. It seems like a constant problem with him.

I was very pleased with GDay! Our defense is a known commodity, except they have another year of experience. The same guys were top 5 last year. The offense did very well against them. Murray looked much better than his stats, TBs looked strong, as did receivers. Most importantly, the line held its own. I think the best thing we have going for the OLine this year is who they practice against. We are deep and very strong in the front seven on D, so it doesn’t surprise me that the number two O line had trouble. Obviously, we aren’t nearly as deep there. Special teams were the only area that looked like it needs a ton of work. UGA looks to have their best year in a long time next year.

He had a few beautiful throws, nice fakes, and I noticed he led the O well with good presence. He moved Jay Rome to the correct side on the long TD play. He made some mistakes and he needs to keep adding muscle, but Christian looks like he is going to be good to me. Was very impressed with Lynch and Rome! The answers are:
1. Barrett Jones
2. John Theus
3. Nick Saban
4. Bama’s offensive line in 2011
Questions
1. Who is Bama’s top offensive lineman, who came from a private school
2. Who is a highly regarded OL by talent evaluators, who came from a private school
3. Who is the coach, according to tide roll, who neglected to recruit Cam Newton early on in 2010 because he considered him a lock to UGA.
4. What was the top SEC OL despite starting more whites than UGA (how did that happen, wonders tide roll)
CHDawg

3:59 pm
They say not at all, but they also said he wouldn’t need surgery. He has great wheels, too, so I would expect him to be fine. He had just under 1000 yds running. They lost three OLmen also, so that could be a factor. We are out our defenders, but I think Smith is back. We are deep at LB. Hopefully Moore can pick up the baton at safety. The weird thing is that sometimes going deeper early helps you later because the players are forced to progress quicker. Swann and Moore might end up being better when the schedule really gets tough. We just have to get through those early games.

You know the other interesting thing is that we have lost some good players because they thought they wouldn’t play. I have to wonder if Hamilton and Love would have gotten a lot of playing time if they had stayed in the program. Malcome almost quit last year and he wound up starting late in the year, and is doing great. One injury to Murray and Mason is likely starting. I think these guys might not want to give up so quickly. Things can change quickly.

Another 5-10 pounds of muscle and I think he has the chance to really be a special Georgia tailback. IC looks great, too. They are going to complement each other beautifully. Samuel can mix it up with them, but I hope they will move him to a hybrid FB. He can block like a FB and run like a TB. So, I would us RS to run a lot, catch a lot, throw him some shovels, screens, etc. A series with Samuel/Crowell and one with Samuel/Malcome will be awfully tough to defend. What I really like is how quickly we could switch from a power I to a wide open shotgun with Samuel and any of the TBs. A linebacker will wind up trying to cover one of them, and that wouldn’t be easy. The Carolina All-Stars look to make a statement, too. UGA is sitting on some serious running talent next year, imho.

Frankly, I’m pretty fed up with all of the UGA apologists with their lame whining that all schools have the same problems with their athletes. That’s utter tripe. UGA has so many athletes arrested and suspended or dismissed outright because Mark Richt recruits low class morons with no moral code, no sense of teamwork, and a “me first” attitude that’s like a cancer to the team.

Bill King asked the question, “Any other lingering concerns you have coming out of spring practice?”
_________________________________________
When are we going to beat any team who makes a top 10 poll, since we have lost 7 in a row dating all the way back to Auburn in 2006; or, indeed when are we going to beat any team who even makes any top 25 poll, since we have lost 9 in a row – and, as far as that goes when are we even going to beat an SEC team with a winning SEC record, since we have lost 9 in a row starting with the Kentucky game in 2007.
Look, this is the 2012 season, this up-coming season after which we lose everyone on Defense, the whole entire team and again this season we only play 1 team who made any top 25 poll all 12 regular season games. The 2005 season was eight (8) seasons ago now this 1-year window this up-coming 2012 season. It’s getting very old and very stale around here, and it’s not like we’re doing it the right way either hitting little girls, 7 failed drug tests in the last 4 months, and 11 defensive backs we gave scholarships none of whom will play vs Mizzou. Bill King has hit upon some of the troubled areas, and there are many this coaching staff puts us in every single season of the current 11-year mediocre results. 21 losses the current 5-year period and Jim Donnan fired for having 19 losses his 5-year reign. # 32 in won/lost record the last 4 years. # 21 in win/lost record the current 6-year period.
Get your heads out of the sand around here. We need to beat top teams, and instead we found ourselves the # 5 SEC team in just our own conference again in 2011-2012. I’m sorry that doesn’t hack it. And, what do we have for 2012 ? No LSU and no Alabama, again but we face both after this season in 2013; that with no defense since all ours is gone after 2012. 1 team the entire “schedule” for us 2012 who made any top 25. We have a Favorite at QB who somehow has managed to throw away games in which it would appear any other QB certainly could not have done worse. His opponent QB out-performed him head-to-head those excruciating 9 losses in a row to teams who made any top 25 poll. Our program goes on the Summer Tour and all they can discuss is how we punish our players, who goof-off and don’t stay on the team. 24 attrition of the 109 signed scholarships toward our 85-man scholarship limit. Only 78 on scholarship and we are allotted 85, and 3 of those are walk-ons who none of them play offense or defense. Our OL, again this up-coming season, as has been an all too often occurrence these 11 years, is saddled with the fewest returning started games of any team in America, and of course they’ve none of them beat any team making any top 10 or even top 25 poll. Again, hamstrings from improper strength and conditioning. Again, platitudes about Special Teams then the 1 Special Teams coach who does speak up actually states our Special Teams played well at # 78 Special Teams in the nation, and still no Special Teams’ Coach.
A poorly performing QB. A RB in nothing but trouble bragging how he’s going to win the Heisman Trophy 2012, when his performance less than a week ago, again was what it has always been – very poor. No Fullback, move someone there with 1 FB recruited despite 200 a season available in 6 seasons.
Best WR moved to troubled defensive back position, after we recruited only 1 DB for 2012.
Chris Conley also as a WR but he too cannot practice, even.
7 QB and none of them are going to get a snap and you know it.
Best TE will be held back and some senior TE installed into the Starter role despite all the heroics in the Spring G-Day Game by Jay Rome. We once started Joe Tereshinski III instead of Matthew Stafford # 1 NFL pick. Excuse me ? Knowshon Moreno redshirted so we saw him only 2 seasons. Aron White made the Starter instead of now arrested, Orson Charles. 3 players kicked off the team for stealing from their own teammates. We have no teamwork around here.
Standing pat with Mike Bobo as Offensive Coordinator. Good heavens. See any issues with this football program ? Oh, not much.

Richt’s record speaks volumes but you UGA fans are deaf! If he can hire a coach that can supply some discipline (VanGorder and Calloway) they along with the good talent in the state can have a decent team but that is the ceiling for Richt. Richt is a buddy buddy guy and that will just get it done with 18-23 year old kids looking for a mentor not a buddy. Please continue with your denial for you do it so well.

Like UGA, Notre Dame lives in the past. There is no way you could compare the value of a Notre Dame degree to the degrees given away at the glorified community college in Athens. At least they have won a title since 1980. So has Tech. So has Clemson. So has BYU. So has Colorado. So has ………..

im pretty sure henry will keep his commitment. with the year the dawgs had last year and the year they will have this year, he will want to be part of that sure. i have no doubts that Coach richt will get UGA another National Title. He has been close early on and his 2 sec championships came at the wrong time for the sec . now the sec champ is pretty much secured 1 spot in the title game , i expect UGA to get its shot at the National Title more than once. keeping all those guys on defense was huge for UGA. look at all the past sec teams that won national titles and the 1 thing they had in common was having jr and srs all over the place on defense. UGA has lacked that the past 4 or 5 years. even when these guys leave after this year UGA will have some top players back on defense again.

UGA brings back the 2nd best qb in the sec and will most likely have a better year than wilson of ark this year since petrino is gone. murray will have all kinds of receivers to throw to and the running backs are looking really good to have a big year. crowell amd malcome have both added some weight and seem to be healthy. the O-line is finally adding some depth which will help in the running game. so i just dont get why some of the dawg fans are so negative. with a legit top 5 defense coming back even without the 3 or so suspened players, UGA will be just fine.

Why wasn’t a coach hired for Special Teams? Hell, Urban Meyer coached the STs at florida!!! CMR needs to get off his ass… Meyer played his best players on Special Teams.. Oh, I keep forgetting, we are talking about CMR.. CMR can’t afford to play starters because of lack of depth, players suspended, and players quitting.. lmao..After this season CMR will be FIRED. Notre Dame of the south. What a joke. N D has ten or more National Championships and UGA has one and you compare your progam to Norte Dames. LMAO They are many teams in the south with more tradition that UGA. ALA, LSU, TENN, Fla. State Maybe Auburn, Miami and Mississippi before they fell on hard times in the last few years. UGA would be way down the list when you compare them to Norte Dame. 32 years since they won their one and done National Championship.

as long as conservative bobo calling the plays the players wont be utilized like they should nor GA wins BCS ship. Example…2 & long he usually runs thru the middle for negative yardage making it 3rd n long.(which leads to the many 3 n outs) The passing game has been good when they throw past 10yrds or more but he never sticks to what works. Bottom line GET RID OF BOBO!!!! TOO PREDICTABLE
