G-Day left no doubt Hutson Mason will play if anything happens to Aaron Murray. (Johnny Crawford / AJC)
Fan expectations were low for Saturday’s G-Day game in Athens, what with some key spring story lines short-circuited by injuries to freshman tailback Keith Marshall and prospective two-way player Malcolm Mitchell. But in the end, as one of my brothers noted, it was the most enjoyable spring game we’ve seen in recent years thanks to some unexpected scoring by both the offenses and defenses.
The first half was typical for these intrasquad outings, as the Red team with the first-team offense went against the Black team with the first-team defense, resulting in a pretty even match that saw the Reds lead 10-3 at halftime.
However, with the coaches mixing it up more in the second half, the benches emptying and several players showing up on both teams, it got a lot more interesting than your typical G-Day, resulting in only a missed 2-point play preserving the Reds’ 32-31 win with less than a minute left on the clock.
I think probably the highlight of the game for me was Black team QB Christian LeMay hitting redshirt freshman tight end Jay Rome, who made a leaping, twisting catch and then a nice run for a 66-yard score with 59 seconds left. With Artie Lynch also having made a couple of nice catches for the Reds, it’s looking like the tight end position might be a team strength again this coming season.
There were other memorable plays, including a defensive score that came thanks to the officials being a bit more lax in blowing whistle-sacks on the quarterbacks than in some past G-Day games. So when linebacker Reuben Faloughi hit Black team QB Parker Welch, knocking the ball out, the refs didn’t blow the play dead and defensive lineman Ricky Lowe grabbed the ball in midair and rambled 62 yards for a touchdown.
But aside from the entertainment value of such moments — and just the sheer pleasure of watching any sort of UGA football Between the Hedges on a beautiful spring day — the main reason most of us were there was to get some sense of what sort of team the Bulldogs will field in 2012. And from that perspective, we walked away with a few tentative conclusions.
For one, LeMay continues to progress nicely into the prospective backup QB this year, what with plans for No. 2 signal caller Hutson Mason to take a redshirt year unless needed. Right on his first play, LeMay made a really nice fake before hitting Rantavious Wooten on a 27-yard pass. But LeMay, who’s only played two intrasquad games of football in the past two years, wasn’t as consistent as Aaron Murray or Mason, even though he had the day’s best numbers, with 7 of 10 passes completed for a touchdown and an interception. Going up against one of the best defenses in the country and spending much more time in the game than we’d been led to expect, Murray was a workmanlike 7 of 17 for 112 yards and a touchdown. Mason, who wound up playing for both teams, was a combined 9 of 12 for 133 yards and definitely provided the spark that got the Black offense back in the game.
We left Sanford Stadium certain of one thing: If anything happens to Murray, that redshirt will be quickly torn off Mason.
As for the running game, things were stacked heavily in favor of the Reds initially, with starter Ken Malcome and Isaiah Crowell alternating with about even results, the edge going to Malcome for a couple of tough, tackle-breaking scoring runs. Meanwhile, the Black team’s backfield was populated from deep in the depth chart, with mighty mite Brandon Harton and Kyle Karempelis carrying the ball with little success behind a struggling second-team offensive line. (That, ironically, led to the Black quarterbacks instead using their tailbacks as receivers on quick screen passes — which is how small but speedy tailbacks should be used, instead of trying in vain to run them up the middle. Harton ended up with six catches for 52 yards. Mike Bobo, please take note!).
Eventually, though, fullback-tailback Richard Samuel, who had been listed as doubtful because of a concussion earlier in the week, switched from the Reds to the Blacks (and to a No. 19 jersey instead of his usual 22) to inject some life into the Black running game, showing both power and speed on the outside. He finished with 43 yards and a touchdown on eight runs.
On defense, it was a bit of a surprise that Ramik Wilson’s name was called out so frequently by stadium announcer by Brook Whitmire. Wilson had quite a day, leading the Reds with seven tackles (two for loss) and an interception that he returned 19 yards. Alec Ogletree also had a nice interception and 28-yard return on a sailing pass lofted by wide receiver Michael Bennett, but you expect that of him. Chase Vasser had a good day for the Blacks, making five tackles and deflecting a pass. Big John Jenkins batted down another pass for the Blacks.
At wide receiver, redshirt-freshman speedster Justin Scott-Wesley showed indications he’ll be a factor this fall, leading the Red team with three catches for 46 yards. Tavarres King caught a couple, including a 33-yard touchdown pass from Murray. And the Black team’s Michael Erdman made a really nice snag on a long gainer from Mason.
And for those who enjoy big hits, Sanders Commings unleashed one when he caught Marlon Brown not looking, decking the senior receiver to the crowd’s obvious delight.
All in all, a lovely day to be in Athens, as local radio legend H. Randolph Holder used to say.
OTHER G-DAY NOTES

The 2012 spirit shirt was unveiled Saturday. (University of Georgia)
Among the “millionaires club” of Dawgs alums hanging out on the sideline were A.J. Green and Matt Stafford. … The lettermen’s flag football game before the regular spring game was fun, as usual, with the spirited participants including Garrison Hearst (who’s developed into quite the receiver), Tyson Browning (still making great moves), Joey Hester (who made some impressive throws), Andre “Pulpwood” Smith, Amp Arnold, Michael Cooper, Kentrell Curry (whose name sideline “announcer” Bobby Poss never could master) and Fred Munzenmaier. Just for the record, the Reds won that game as well, 28-12. … The official UGA 2012 spirit T-shirt, as chosen by the student body, was unveiled. This year’s design, by fan Christopher Sweat of Patterson, features distressed “Sick ‘Em” lettering over a print of Uga’s eyes. It’s available at the UGA Bookstore or through Georgiadogs.com.

This season will reason on Murray’s decision making and the stregth & conditioning. I’m one that has expected more out of Murray up to this point. However, MOST QB’s do their maturing between their Sophmore & Junior years. We will see if Murray matures. The Mizzou game will give us our answer I believe.
To my fellow Dawg people. One thing we all must get through our heads and that is Murray is our starting QB unless injured. You can support him or continue dogging him.
If he steps up against Mizzou, SC, UF & Auburn then he should have tons of confidence going into the SEC CG(He’ll need it). If he does not mature the SEC CG will be out of reach half way through the season.
Should be an interesting year! Go Dawgs!

My friends agree Aaron Murray has a problem called narcissistic personality disorder, he fits all the symptoms, people with NPD like Murray, end up pursuing individual goals over team goals. Murray is much more focused on trying to set records at QB.
Team Achievements:
Murray is 2-10 against ranked teams, 0-2 against South Carolina, 1-1 against Florida, 0-2 in Bowl games and 0-1 in Championship games.
Individual Achievements:
Lots of td’s and yards, @70% compiled against teams with losing records.

Did you hear what I just said people?!?!?!?!?!? 79 YARDS ON 57 CARRIES!!! Whatever problems you have with Aaron Murray they pale in comparison to our complete and utter lack of any type of running game whatsoever. I don’t give a two cent flying crap who our QB is next year. Unless we can run the ball better it will not make a bit of damn difference.
You people are completely out in left field. Get a clue.

Had Murray hit on a few long passes, Grantham would have been forced to stop putting 8 or 9 in the box to stop the run.
But in spite of that, Malcome had 2 td’s and got 5 yards a carry, Samuel got 6 yards a carry, Crowell got 4 yards a carry.
That was without Marshall or Gurley.
Lemay also ran well, 4 carries for 20 yards.

Ranky,
After Lemay’s interception was returned to the 11 yard line, explain how Mr All World Hutson Mason could not generate any offense at all?
Yet Murray had the most impressive drive of the day against the 1st team defense for a TD and also had no turnovers.
But don’t let facts get in the way of your nonsense you spew every day under multiple blog handles

Ranky,
Great stuff. I like the way you back up your opinion with facts. There’s really no way to dispute what you’re saying, and I am now a believer too that A Murray is not the answer. The truth is uncomfortable, but regardless, needs to come out, beats living in fantasy island. After 2 years, watching the kid go 2 & 9 vs ranked teams, enough is enough. And he just got flat out pummeled by Hutson Mason this Spring, Richt would completely lose the lockerroom if he gave the starting job to Murray after that kind of Spring. 2 td’s, 1 interception for touchdown, 50% completions, that’s not good enough for dawg fans.

So you are one of Ranky’s stupid friends. Like I said, the entire team gets credit for the wins and losses…..quit blaming Murray for the team’s failures. I believe in Freedom of Speech. You either do, or you want to have only your opinion heard. Our football program hasn’t beat a team who made the top 25 in 2 consecutive seasons now. I look forward to us actually doing that, oh say 1 out of 10 consecutive games – you know beating a team who makes some top 25 poll, which we haven’t done in years now.
Pretty hard to separate that from loving Richt as the leader of this program, and saying all kinds of positive statements about Richt when he can’t beat the top teams and stands over his 11 years at 3-13 vs teams who made top 10. Since it is hard to separate, should we ignore the facts that we’ve not beat the top teams – as you do in personal attacks on other posters, who dare to suggest we ain’t that great ? Why is it you say nothing about it, either way – just personal attack that only your opinion be heard under the guise of Freedom of Speech. That’s not Freedom of Speech – it’s complete lack of Freedom of Speech other than you should be allowed to continue your own personal harangue for Personal Attacks on other Posters whom you obviously have no come-back to on the facts of said Poster’s point.
We either want to fix this, or we are satisfied ignoring the fact that we can’t beat top teams.
I do so apologize that it upsets your delicate feelings and your supreme knowledge of football that someone might actually own up to the fact that we cannot and have not beat the top teams. I see very plainly that you cannot even bring yourself to discuss the point, only some façade pretense of Freedom of Speech to Disallow that which you wish could be hidden : We don’t beat the top teams.
These are well-known facts. Removing my voice, does nothing to these facts, and once again, leaves only that your Belief in Freedom of Speech extends only so far as to Squelch the Known Fact, while we continue on a very poor showing of 24 Attrition for all kinds of off-field issues you also completely fail to address.
Not only is it completely known that Mark Richt has failed to beat the top teams, but recently in addition, Mark Richt has failed to beat even one team in The SEC starting with Kentucky game in 2007 who made it to a winning SEC record.
Maybe there is some better way to view all this ? No. The better way to view it, is that in your weak mind argument, just remove a poster who says it. Excuse me, there are 150 posters saying this here. And, as for Aaron Murray, please – are you really so in-bed with Aaron Murray as your only QB to see any action when our own players say others must be given a chance too, that you fail to even notice, absent my posts on the topic that there remain 150 others saying exactly the same ? You think they are all me too ? All 150 of them ? Just go already, allow only your opinion to be heard. And, what is that opinion ? That wanting to see our program actually win 1 of the current 10 games against teams who make any top 25 poll, should be suppressed silenced stifled so that all that remains is your own Flame Personal Attack on 1 of 150 who all say excuse me, can we just beat a team who makes a top 25 to be 1 and 10 at such please ?
I don’t think that policy is even correct that by ignoring that we have not beat any team in The SEC who has made a winning SEC record starting with Kentucky in 2007, that therefore only you should be heard on this topic when all you ever say is a Personal Attack on the Poster who dared to mention that he would like to see us beat one for a change. You know ? Be 1-10 at it.

Full Credit for 16 wins and 11 losses, just like David Greene go Full Credit for winning at the time the most wins by a starting QB in NCAA history. Also full credit for 11 of the 27 games he started, the other QB on the other teams, were Better than He head-to-head that day. And, of course, the real point, Full Credit for 16 wins, not 1 of which made it to any top 25 poll. And, likewise on the same point, 11 losses 9 of which did make a top 25 poll. Nice job Aaron Murray, measured the same as David Greene – or, do we need a different set of rules for how we measure Aaron Murray than how we measure David Greene ?

2 – having not beat any SEC team who made a winning SEC record starting with Kentucky in 2007
3- having not beat any team any conference after Auburn in 2006 who made any top 10
4 – having not beat any team any conference after Georgia tek in 2009 who made any top 25
5 – having 24 scholarships signed by Mark Richt all 24 of whom are now attrition for the Mizzou game 2012
are, or are not items which anyone of them can actually step-up and state is in fact something POSITIVE they can talk about.

“You don’t get a job unless there had been some issues,” Mark Richt said. Excuse me, what does he call being in 8th place all-time in Fulmer Cup Points for just those recruits of his alone during just the Summer Months ? He has 5 who failed a drug test, it was announced. Of those, the Athletic Department and The University of Georgia are specifically not addressing those suspensions at all; although it is known that 2 of the 5 will be facing multiple games’ suspensions from it at least. Another 2 facing legal charges, one of whom has plead Guilty to hitting a girl. Since he is the only 1 addressed by UGA and its poor Athletic Department, only his 4 points for hitting a girl are counted so far in the Fulmer Cup Standings. Once the 5 names are known for failed drug test administered by the NCAA drug testing facilities, there will be more suspensions – a lot more suspensions.
In addition to all this Mark Richt is having to address :
Kolton Houston is not certain to be able to play this year after sitting out last year due to an unspecified NCAA issue. Should he or any of the other 7 players facing suspensions become attrition, the 24 number of scholarships signed by Mark Richt to play vs Mizzou, will go up.
So, the question I have is, if Mark Richt is bragging that the previous regime, with 19 losses his 5 years compared to Mark Richt’s 21 losses his current 5-year period, had issues that led to him getting this job, what does he call all this 2012 ?
With 24 already attrition of the 109 Scholarships signed by Mark Richt for the Mizzou game 2012 already announced as not playing in that game, and in fact removed from the team 1 way or the other, how many more players of his 109 scholarships he signed for 2012 will also become attrition for 2012 ?
This in addition to the 21 losses the current 5-year period for Mark Richt # 20 in the nation in won/lost record this current 5-year period when our football program is not # 20 in won/lost record all-time, but # 11.
I applaud the fan the Augusta last evening forcing Mark Richt to address all these suspensions from what promises to be # 6 team in the polls here pre-season and a season of 12 regular season games of which 1 of the 12 teams, only, made any top 25 poll.
