Some thoughts on UGA suspensions, funny brownies and connecting the dots

Bacarri Rambo seems to have the worst luck when it comes to snack choices. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Bacarri Rambo seems to have the worst luck when it comes to snack choices. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Mark Richt’s Bulldogs entered the spring appearing to have many things breaking their way for the coming season, what with a favorable schedule and a bunch of starters returning, especially on defense. And yet some of those veteran players seem determined to take hold of opportunity with both hands … and chuck it out the window.

While Richt declined Thursday to confirm what’s up with Bacarri Rambo and Alec Ogletree, there’ve been widespread reports that the two players will be suspended several games for “violations of team rules,” which is pretty well understood now to be official code for having failed a drug test.

(If there are any other kinds of rules being violated by UGA players, perhaps Richt and company should come up with new terminology since everyone’s going to think “failed drug test” from now on when they hear that phrase.)

Rambo previously was suspended for a game last season for a similar violation, which as a second-timer puts him in line for an extended suspension this time under UGA’s rules, the toughest in the conference. Georgia holds players out for a tenth of a season (at least one game) for one failed drug test and suspends second-time offenders like Rambo for 30 percent of a season (four games). At most SEC schools, a first-time failed drug test draws no suspension at all.

Whether schools should even be testing the use of a substance that isn’t performance-enhancing is a debate for another day; suffice it to say, it’s against the rules and the players know they’re subject to random testing, so it’s difficult to work up much sympathy for them.

Rambo’s high school coach has tried his best to engender some, though, with a sad tale about how the player accidentally got high by unknowingly eating brownies that had been laced with pot while on spring break. Last time, it supposedly was a case of Rambo just being caught with a girl in his car who had a joint in her purse, according to the coach.

OK, maybe Rambo is that unlucky or naive about what sort of folks he chooses to hang out with. Or perhaps the coach and player are being just a bit disingenuous.

I know one thing: That high school coach attempting to shift the blame to UGA for “stupid timing” in testing kids right after they came back from spring break makes me wonder about the mentoring Rambo received before he got to Athens. UGA’s athletes were all gathered together before spring break and warned not to get in trouble; drug tests right after they returned from break shouldn’t have been a surprise to anyone.

Alec Ogletree reportedly is facing multiple game suspensions, too. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Alec Ogletree reportedly is facing multiple game suspensions, too. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Anyway, Rambo’s coach says he’s down to miss four games, though he’s appealing that and if the appeal fails he might consider entering the NFL supplemental draft. And Ogletree reportedly will miss two to four games (we still don’t know for sure). All that on top of two starters in the defensive secondary already being suspended for the first game or two.

Predictably, some folks’ reaction has been to attack Richt for his lack of discipline, which boggles the mind when you consider that, as noted earlier, UGA has the toughest policy on such infractions.

I’m not sure what these folks think the head coach can do to keep his players from knowingly violating rules short of following them around 24 hours a day. Yeah, I know, if only Richt were meaner so the players were scared of him, like Nick Saban, or so the reasoning goes. Of course, Alabama players get suspended for rules violations, too, so the rule of the iron fist appears to have limits in how effective it is.

Then we’ve got the folks who are making lists of all the off-field problems that have cropped up in recent years. I saw one that even included the recent DUI for Orson Charles, who isn’t even in the program any more. Heck, why not throw in UGA alum Hines Ward’s DUI while you’re at it?

Others have gone so far as to count up how many players have left the program for various reasons over the past couple of years, connecting dots that aren’t even on the same page by noting all the Georgia signees who theoretically could have been eligible for the first couple of games this season if they were still at the school.

OK, I’ll concede that, in addition to players missing games because of suspensions, there’ve been several players kicked off the team for various reasons. Some of us consider that a sign that Richt is a good disciplinarian, but I suppose you can argue that one either way.

Still, I fail to see the point of including in the discussion players no longer at UGA because they transferred for lack of playing time or had to take a medical disqualification or failed to qualify academically.

Unless, that is, you’re just looking to pad the numbers so it makes it look worse for Richt.

Then there are the folks who cite the suspensions and departures from the program as an indication Richt just isn’t recruiting the right kind of players to begin with.

Maybe he should forget about all those 5-star and 4-star ratings and sign only Eagle Scouts and winners of DAR good citizen awards. Of course, then fans and sportswriters alike would be howling because he wasn’t drawing top talent to Athens!

As for the practical considerations of the latest development, at linebacker Todd Grantham no doubt will rely on the same players who filled in last year when Ogletree missed half the season with an injured foot, with Christian Robinson and Amarlo Herrera both having plenty of game experience. At free safety, next in line after Rambo is Corey Moore, who saw limited playing time last year as a freshman.

All are adequate replacements, though they’re certainly not the sort of impact players Ogletree and Rambo have been in the past and were expected to be again.

More than that, though, what’s disturbing about this trend is what it says about the UGA players’ dedication to their teammates. Blaming the coaches is bunk; it’s the players who are letting down the side. Sure, they’re just college kids, but they’re also scholarship athletes at a marquee program and they willingly signed up for this time in the spotlight. They all know what the rules are. They also know what’s within their grasp this season if they perform up to expectations.

And yet they’re acting as if championships can be won while still playing the fool. Rarely is that the case.

When he was preparing to return from his one-game suspension last year, Rambo declared, “I’m going to do whatever it takes to help my team win, and I know I’ve got it in me.”

It hasn’t quite turned out that way.

1/10 of a season is more than 1 game.
12 games X 1/10 = 1.2
60 minutes X 1.2 = 72 minutes
1 game and 12 minutes of the 1st quarter of the second game.

Bill, you are right on with this one. I read the other column and was thinking that those listed were there strictly to inflate the numbers. That is poor journalism period. After the four game suspension I do not see RB coming back. The NFL does mind the weed issue so he will get drafted in the SD.

This is disappointing. I’m officially lowering my expectations for the upcoming season. I know everyone will say “it will be all right, we’ve got other guys who can play” and the like, but the truth is, these suspensions may have just torpedoed the season before it began, just like A.J. Green’s suspension did a couple of years ago. I’m not saying its certain, but I think there’s a real chance that these foolish acts may have just ruined what was looking like a promising season. I’ll still watch, but I’ll believe that “everything is going to be all right” when I see it.

I hate to see people make this about CMR. Like he’s damned if he does damned if he doesn’t. When you recruit high talent players often is the case that they haven’t been disciplined much I’m their life. So factor in the fact that there are 90 or so people on the roster and you can’t expect him to be aprobation officer. All he does is set the example, what more can he do?

I know this is bad for the program but can someone with more CFB knowledge than myself tell me honestly and omitting the emotional data, is the season lost due to these suspensions? I know Defense is going to be hindered but arent the first four games soort of soft games anyway? Can we win with the Dream Team recruits from last year, teamed up with the Offensive powerhouse that does not seem to be as affected by the suspensions to carry us through the first four games, or is it just as bad as everything I have read and the season is pretty much scrapped with these high value starters missing a third of the season?

Your commentary exonerating Richt is a disgrace.  It is disgraceful that the ajc has you representing our fan base.  Who exactly is it that is bringing in these bad players?  Oh yeah…Mark Richt.  These shenanigans have been going on for years under Richt, and you and all the other clowns in our fan base want to exonerate him.  If he were winning national titles, at least you could point to that (though his lack of leadership would still be disgraceful), but you’re glorifying a man who not only lets the inmates run the asylum, but the man can’t beat anyone of substance lately anyway.  Why do you clowns insist on keeping him around?  His Saint Richt way of running things isn’t getting the job done, and it’s time to get a disciplinarian in here who may actually also beat some good opponents along the way.

I enjoyed the Chip Towers article yesterday, he took the time to actually put numbers together and did not mislead readers in any manner.

Perhaps the two of you should work together and get similar numbers for other SEC schools. Does Alabama, LSU, SCar, Florida or Auburn have similar numbers for attrition? What about showing how many reported discipline problems never resulted in any suspension at another school?

Need a longer term project? Based on money, recruiting base and any other necessary resources to build a championship level college football program, is there any school in the country that does less with more than UGA?

Far be it for me to defend Georgia, but Hines Ward didn’t get a DUI. He got accused of it, but was never convicted. Let’s let that one go.

As to the weed stuff, kids everywhere use it. This should not be surprising information. I’m pretty sure the bigger upset would be if college kids went on spring break and didn’t smoke (or eat) up.

The only criticism I’d offer, Bill, is that it’s completely irrelevant what other programs do. It does no good to point elsewhere and say, “look at them!”

Basically CMR is under a microscope, and we the people have the liverty to voice our opinions in the media. So like Ssgt said, he is damned if he does and damned if he does not. Half the people will love him if he locks these kids down in the offseason and only feeds them protein bars and shakes to survive on……but of course the other half will say this is not helping our team. I dont see how a coach can prevent this type of behavior if he is shooting for a National Championship. You recruit to fill needs with the best available resources out there. CMR is staying true to the wonderful state of GA by recruiting local and he gets great talent to fill our Dawg needs, but not every single recruit is going to have their head on straight. As a matter of fact the kids we want on this team have been the best at football their entire lives and more times than not they are already going to be a little “over confident” if you will. Of course CMR will try and tame them as much as possible but I would think a top program like UGA would get quite a few that will need some peer discipline if you know what I mean (I am referring to blanket party Ssgt…he he he). We need to let the team take care of those that get out of line as there is only so much a coach can do.

DIT

I can’t believe I’m agreeing with some of what Kool-aidBAR is saying. Some posters jump on board that CMR is a Christian man. Then if he disciplines he is an awful coach.
Part of me wishes that CMR would just go ahead and kick Ogletree & Rmabo off the team. 2nd violation tells me that they could give a flip about the team.
And, if I’m reading thsi correctly, Rambo already plans on the Supplimentary draft. If his suspension is not lifted he said he will apply for it? With a 2nd offense against him, his suspension will not be lifted nor should it.
Saying that it’s bad timing for a drug test after spring break is stupid. Heck, if there is a time for a drug test it’s right after spring break. This shows you who is loyal to the team and who is not. These two are not.

All questions that need to be addressed by Richt.

You’ve accepted his thug ways for three years and will for 4! Bama has a panel made of players that is a big part of the discipline of players but Nick is the head of that committee and he doesn’t want to spend time with players that create clutter. Football is a business at Bama and the recruits and their parents understand that from their 1st visit and meeting with Nick Saban. You can’t weed all the bad apples but you save yourself much time and effort if you understand early in the recruiting process what the parents are all about as well as the player!!!!! Talent is big and you will not win big with average folks but no character people take up too much of the teams time and coaches time trying to keep them on track. What I would like to see are some team leaders coming forward (Jarvis Jones, Murray, anyone?) and saying that they are sick of the selfish behavior of some of their teammates. Obviously, the coaches don’t seem to be getting through – maybe if their teammates started holding them accountable, we’d get some traction…

That is a good point. I’m pretty sure Andrew Luck and Marcus Lattimore haven’t been getting into trouble. There is a way to recruit quality 4 and 5 star guys, but I don’t think UGA has done that so far overall. They let far too many bad eggs in.

Let’s take a look at how Saban would have handled the latest incidents at Ga.

Brandon Smith, Saban would have called a press conference ASAP( the next morning) and declared Smith as the ”finest example of what we look for from our players” and said that he will not be suspended. This is the best way to make a story go away. See the Upshaw Domestic Violance case.

Sanders Commings, again call a news conference and repeat what he said when Courtney Upshaw was arrested for the same thing. Again, no suspension.

Ogletree and Rambo. After they failed the schools drug test Saban would have had a GA simply throw away the samples because that’s how it’s done at Alabama. It never happened.

Who really believes Alabama players never smoke or drink? If you do then here’s your sign!

The NCAA as governing body should put in place a consistant punishment system for illegal drug use. Simple solution is maditory quarterly drug testing for scholarship athletes. First failure – 5 game suspension. Monthly drug testing after 1st failure… 2nd failure loss of scholarship and 1 year suspension…. NCAA policy for all. Pretty simple.

Bill – Some people just don’t understand what it means to be a responsile citizen and team mate. All this relects poorly on their maturity and indicates extreme self-centeredness. As you point out, we have the most severe policy in the conference on these kinds of transgressions. It seems irrelevant to these young men. I think the ultimate result of our stern policy is that some recruits will simply decide to go where they can “do the weed” and know they will not be suspended. Our tough policy seems to only hurt the team in that we no doubt miss some recruits and we have numerous players ineligble at the start of every season.

It is naive to think that more of our players are eating mj brownies during spring break than those on other teams. It’s just that ours are the only ones being suspended. Bottom line: our tough policy makes no sense from a football point of view. On the other hand, what is a coach supposed to do? Turn the other way like other coaches do? I suggest that the life lessons hopefully will make these young men better citizens in the future. If that turns out to be the case for just a few, then it is worth the hit in wins and losses.

The biggest thing that Richt and Co. should be concerned with is that this is just the end March. The rest of those guys have four months to get into trouble. How many more players will be suspended by the first game? Also, it is crazy to compare what other schools do or do not do with discipline. The policy is the policy and the kids know it going in. If they cannot live by the rules, they can go somewhere else or not play. It is pretty simple. If I get arrested I doubt I can go before an American Court and tell them that it is not fair because that is not the law in Mexico!

Ok Bill, you’re the coach (assume) at UGA and every week one of your players in the off season gets a DUI,tests positive for MJ,domestic abuse, etc. And these type of crimes happen for 3 straight years. Who do we blame ?

A)The players ? Ok. each person is responsible for their actions, true. But you wanna call Richt strict yet he allows the same players to commit the same repeat offenses. Kick them off the team.

B)Society ? Ok. True that USA’s morals are rock-bottom. But Aaron Murray or Blair Walsh didn’t commit any offenses. So don’t blame society until EVERY player is indicted.

C)The coach ? Ok. He cannot babysit them in the off-season,true. But if your players continue to disregard the laws and put a black eye on the university then why not get a coach that might get thru to the players ? This isn’t happening at Kentucky,Florida,Vandy,Tenn,Auburn,Arky, etc. Its only happening at UGA to this extent.

You, along with others, are reporting that Bacarri was suspended for one game for failing a drug test last season. The FACT is that he told Coach Ritch about the “speeding ticket” and the joint being found on the girl who was riding with him. Since when does anyone get suspended for speeding. That was the charge. At NO time was Bacarri tested and found to have drugs in his system. The suspension for last season was not enforced because of a failed drug test. Coach Ritch issued the suspension independently by his own admission.
God Bless his high school coach for trying to defend him and mentoring the kid. It may be the only mentoring he has ever had. For you to pass judgement on the coach and indicate that he was a poor influence on his life before he went to UGA is reducilous and insulting. That coach may be the only reason the kid is in college in the first place. I’m sure you have influenced 100’s of “kids” in your life while writing articles that slam coaches for being fathers to these boys.

Georgia holds players out for a tenth of a season (at least one game) for one failed drug test and suspends second-time offenders like Rambo for 30 percent of a season (four games). At most SEC schools, a first-time failed drug test draws no suspension at all.

In the statement above, it says that there is a suspension of one tenth of the season for a failed drug test and suspends second time offenders LIKE RAMBO for 30 percent of the season. Again, I ask, how does UGA consider him a second time offender when he never failed a drug test to begin with?
maybe my beef is not with you Bill King but rather UGA for considering him a second time offender.

However, I do know Alan Ingram personally and know he is as much a father to so many kids in south Georgia as their own fathers, sometimes moreso. He has been coaching football in south Geogia for 42 years and is a pillar to the Seminole County and Miller County communities.

This writer (blogger) for the mutt nation is nothing more than an excuse-making talking head for THUGA. He regurgitates all of the major “talking points” the media has been given by THUGA to use everytime their players are caught breaking the law or breaking basic rules of being on athletic scholarship at ANY university. THUGA isn’t any harder or stringent on its players than others in the SEC. That’s totally BUNK! If anything, THUGA has a huge, recurring issue with players in trouble because there’s no real fear of serious reprisal there! Schools like Auburn EXPEL (not suspend) players who fail to meet requirements (see Michael Dyer, its best player and potential Heisman hopeful for 2012) of its program and yanked the scholarships for all 4 players who were arrested for a criminal act last year THE DAY AFTER IT HAPPENED!!!!!!!

At THUGA, Richt and company dance around every issue. You mutt fans keep screaming that you have a the “toughest drug testing policy”. You wanna know why???

BECAUSE YOUR PLAYERS HAVE THE WORST DRUG PROBLEM IN THE SEC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No matter how bad it get, no matter how many times it happens, the THUGA beat writers and bloggers like this guy here (bill?) will keep singing excuses instead of manning up and admitting your program does and HAS HAD major problems with all-around thuggery since Saint Mark arrived. When the drunken players destroyed the potted plants at the Athens hospital, Richt had a lawyer there before the police arrived. The players who stole money from their teammates were not charged with a crime, because that goes to the NCAA. Richt ignored Mettenburger’s assault charge and named him starting QB until he couldn’t make the charge go away and Adams got involved. Try Harder, Saban has not even suspended Courtney Upshaw for even one quarter, or even one practice, for assaulting his girlfriend, how would you get the attrition numbers, if Coaches like Saban don’t discipline for Violent infractions, much less minor? And if a player were suspended at another College, wouldn’t that be his second offense? So you would have to double other college’s suspensions, because Georgia suspends for a first offense. Really there is no way to get an accurate number of other Colleges attritions, because some sweep the dirt under the carpet. Next time, try Harder!

Honestly—don’t think that our (UGA) discipline policy is effective enough to stop players from using pot. And what rate of stoppage is considered effective—vs number of players using vs number of players being caught

But I don’t know of any policy at different colleges that is effective enough to stop players from using pot….Pot is just so widespread.

I am against players using Pot for the record…..But why penalize the team by having a tougher policy at UGA that is not any better at stopping this use….I say our policy should be in line with other schools in the conference–or the conference should just have a blanket policy that everyone abides by.

“Richt is the one recruiting these thugs.” oh yeah, no other schools were recruiting these kids. Any of these kids could just as easily be at any other school in the country. Bama would have gladly signed any of them. They know the rules. They also should be well aware of the consequences. Richt is consistent and firm in how he handles discipline. I guess if Nick Saban were the assistant principal instead of me at my elementary school, none of the 3rd graders would run down the hall.

This is why UGA will never be a National Championship Team. We actually play by the rules. Urban Meyer, Spurrier, Saban. Those guys would not bench a first string player FOR NOTHING.
It’s unfortunate, we’ll never have a consistent Championship Caliber team. Then again, Adams probably doesn’t even want Football at UGA (seeing how UGA is 2nd or 7th most profitable football program in the nation—depending on which poll you believe)—and the *STILL* refused Bonus Payouts to 2nd tier coaching staff…deplorable. I would take 100-Richt’s before I’d take 1-Saban, Meyer or Spurrier. However, just know, he’s hand strung. You could be a FOOTBALL GENIUS, but without players to carry out your plays….what does it matter?

This article and situation is exactly what is wrong with having Richt as Head Coach. The job as UGA head coach has nothing to do with religion, not a dang thingl It is all about winning while possessing discipline and projecting the image to the public that every former player and UGA alumni can be proud. Mark Richt has not done any of these three things. Fire Mark Richt NOW!! Withdraw the contract Mark Richt has not signed, Withdraw the contract Grantham refuses to sign, lets find people that will obtain the three things listed above because of their passion about UGA, enough of this BS starting with our lack of voice President Michael Adams.

I tend to look at the big picture here. If this trend keeps on, CMR will be forced to take the redshirts off players before he is ready. Not necessarily before they are ready. We have lots of talented players,as does most all SEC teams. They can fill the void left by the brain dead starters who get suspended. Problem is though, it kills the progression of the program, It will leave us shorthanded in future seasons at certain positions.

BullDogMike- Are you MJP (a friends initials)? Oh, and the last time UGA did beat SC is because the UGA linebacker (Brookwood) barely tipped the ball on last play or it would be 3 in a row headed to 4 in a row. My point is, you lay it all on the line, and you don’t get to “claim victory” when you lost. Clowney forced Murray to give up the ball. Lattimore busted that long one when UGA was up by 4 and SC had to have a touchdown (Murray’s above referenced sack, fumble, TD came later)..

You either have to believe:
1) ALL the bad kids go to UGA – these same kids were coveted by other Football powerhouses, but somehow only the bad ones go to UGA
2) UGA has a tougher disciplinary system then said other schools. And this is not conjecture – its fact.
So why is it that UGA players are always getting suspended and in trouble? Not too hard to figure out. It’s not the players – its the policy.

To evillurks

1. You claim Georgia is not any harder or stringent on its players than others in the SEC. Absolutely they are regarding illegal drug usage. You might want to look up the penalties for failed drug tests at SEC schools. UGA and UK are the only ones with game suspensions for the first offense.
2. You said Auburn yanked the scholarships for all four players who were arrested for a criminal act last year. Seriously you are not saying all criminal acts are equal. I am guessing any reader on this board would say armed robbery is worse than marijuana usage.
3. Are you aware that Auburn set a Fulmer Cup record that year that was almost 4 times the number of points UGA had the sole time they “won” the Fulmer Cup?
4. Let’s get an impartial party to administer random drug tests for the SEC and compare apples to apples.
It is like having a 100 mph speed limit and some of you bragging about how few speeding violations your school has. Make each school reveal how many first time flunkies they have on drug tests. We never hear about these since it is kept quiet and no games are missed.

I get tired of reading these stories and then coming to the boards and seeing all the stupid comments about how UGA only recruits thugs. For god’s sake people look how stupid that comment makes you look. The talent pool is the same. Yes, there are schools that will overlook stars to get the right kind of person for their school. But it sure isn’t Bama, LSU, Florida, or South Carolina. Nick Saban wanted Malcome Mitchell and Ray Drew VERY badly. He didn’t let them go they CHOSE UGA instead of Bama. They didn’t choose UGA because they thought Coach Richt was going to let them get away with whatever they wanted to. They chose UGA because they liked the school and the coaches and the opportunity. Bama DOES NOT recruit players based on character. The reason you don’t see these reports about Bama players is because reporting such a thing or being an arresting officer in such an incident would be akin to committing suicide. The stuff happens there and I guarantee it. Does it make it right? NO. But stop the inane finger pointing at CMR. In the environment he is in, where everything that happens is public record and the police and school can’t make it go away, he is doing what he can.
If he were an a-hole and had a Charlie Bronson eat$@#t stare, you’d be claiming that he was a thug and lax and just didn’t care. But because he is a composed gentleman you say he is soft and coddles these guys too much. NO ONE could do better in the environment that he is in.

Oh, I see it is supposed to be GOOD NEWS that all these guys Mark Richt signed are NONE OF THEM GOING TO PLAY VS MIZZOU ?

Of course, not.

Not to miss any options, you listed EVERY EXCUSE under the Sun Bill King.

Don’t test for drugs when you admit yourself that it’s hard to drum up any sympathy for them.

Don’t blame the coach for Heaven’s Sake, when of course you lauded Mark Richt for signing each of the 32, now not playing vs Mizzou.

A guy is forced to transfer because he is ACADEMICALLY INELIGIBLE as several of the 32 are, and that is not BAD NEWS ? Right. Keep telling yourself that.

Jeremy Longo last month, medically disqualified, cannot be listed EITHER ? Last month, he was with Sanders Commings BAR-HOPPING where they drank 6 drinks they admit to, and then of course Sanders Commings pleads Guilty beating up a girl, with Jeremy Longo there with Sanders Commings the entire evening. They really take care of each other, don’t they ? Cannot list Jeremy Longo.

In your dreams.

NOTHING BUT BAD PRESS when we are supposed to be readying for the G-Day Game 2 weeks from today, and for a team who hasn’t beat a team who made any top 25 in 9 consecutive games and for a team who hasn’t beat a team who made any top 10 in 7 consecutive games all the way back to 2006.

I never fail to be amused at the fervor that grown men with real responsibilities display in these posts. Kids will be kids, end
of story. These kids are supposed to be students first and athletes second. No where in their scholarship papers is a statement outlining the requirement to sooth the egos of an obsessed fan base. Ga. has won one national title in the last 30plus seasons and fortunately I was there to see it. Ga. is a nice little program but they are not and never will be on par with Alabama and for good reason. Alabama does not care what steps it must take to achieve greatness and Coach Richt and the leadership of UGA at least attempt to keep things in perspective. Do you think Saban and company look and test to the extent UGA does. I doubt it because doing so would put their next national title in danger. While it would be nice to actually reach greatness again I would prefer to do it with integrity.

So big Crimson, how does this demonstrate a lack of integrity at UGA?

We test our guys at the first hint of use, and suspend on the first positive test.

I’d imagine a program that doesn’t suspend on the first test is demonstrating less integrity than one that does.

Every player that has signed with Georgia knew in advance what the standards of conduct were.

If one does not believe they can meet those standards, then sign someplace else.

Think the smart thing for coaches to have done was announce

“WE ARE TESTING EVERY TEAM MEMBER FOR DRUGS WHEN YOU RETURN FROM SPRING BREAK”

Telling your kids “don’t get in trouble” and drug testing while they unpack their car after spring break are two VERY different deals. This is stupid on every level and UGA is to blame. Think the major programs we compete against both on the field and for high school talent are doing such nonsense to their 19 & 20 year old all-Americans? Recruiting in the SEC is cut-throat and what we (UGA) just did will hurt us worse than 7 loss seasons and Bobo play calling combined.

shouldnt we expect that young men given the opportunity to play D 1 athletics of any kind to be held accountable for there own actions? Isnt it reasonable to expect them to know right from wrong? my son plays D 1 baseball and i have been very surprised by how much the coaches depend on them to the right thing but they are young men and thus should be treated that way . There is no way possible to blame coaches for what these young men choose to do on there free time . You would think having to face your team mates after youve just let them all down by your selfish childish act would be enough but as ive always said you can take the player out of the hood but you cant take the hood out of the player .

How stupid can the UGA Administration be? Drug testing after spring break? Our competition doesn’t even drug test – or if they do they give warning to their athletes – because they want to win, not run players off. Why don’t they follow the athletes around w/ secret cameras and see what else they can uncover and get rid of the rest of the players.
All UGA students are on scolarship (HOPE) – why not randomly test them and let’s get enrollment down to 15-20,000 and become a more elite university? That would help Dr Michael “Control Freak” Adams resume even more.
