Spring practice shifts into high gear Saturday as the Dogs put on full pads for the first time. This is when the serious hitting starts and the competition for starting jobs really heats up. Speaking of which, a reader has a question about one of the more interesting spring battles as we dip into some of this week’s Junkyard Mail …
Poposhandarius writes: How are the tight ends looking? Will Lynch and Jay Rome be splitting snaps?
A lot of folks might have assumed that Rome will ascend to the starting spot this season since he was ESPN’s top-rated tight end prospect when he signed last year with Georgia (sometimes known as Tight End U). Rome redshirted last year and spent time on the basketball team. But towering New England Yankee Artie Lynch, a redshirt junior who has waited his turn behind Orson Charles and Aron White, isn’t going to step out of the way. Lynch told The Red and Black: “My goal is to be the starting tight end for Georgia for the next two seasons.” This should be one of the more competitive positions for the Dogs. You’d have to figure Lynch as the more solid blocker, but he showed at G-Day a couple of years ago that he can make big catches, too. “Artie’s made some huge plays, caught like a 40-yard touchdown [on] a little post pattern,” quarterback Aaron Murray told the R&B. As for Rome, Murray said, “Jay’s looking awesome. You always want him to be here for workouts and throwing, but I definitely think he got quicker [and] more fluid with everything just doing so many basketball workouts, so he looks good.” Lynch, who has started out the spring at No. 1 on the depth chart, is banking on keeping the job by proving to Mike Bobo that he’s dependable. “To be honest, I really just want to gain the respect and confidence of Coach Bobo,” he told the R&B. “You depend on the dependable. You don’t depend on the undependable, which sounds pretty basic, but it’s really the truth. I think if I can show him that I have the knowledge of the offense and he’s able move me around to different spots, I’m more than happy to do that.” Actually, that attitude on Lynch’s part could wind up giving Rome more playing time at TE, as backup QB Hutson Mason told The Athens Banner-Herald this week that Lynch is getting some reps at fullback as well. “He knows tight end really well since he’s been here for so long, so he’s learning fullback, just seeing how he handles it. As a quarterback, you always want some guys in the backfield that are going to be able to protect and pick up the blitz. You never worry when Artie’s back there if you’re going to get smacked in the backside. He’s 280 pounds, and he’s grumpy.” Lynch said he’s also been lining up in some formations as an H-back, a hybrid of fullback and tight end. Whether it’s at TE or FB, I like the sound of big and grumpy. Right now, I’d say Lynch is likely to be the starter at tight end but he and Rome should split the playing time. And that looks like a good plan.
Barry Marshall writes: I know Alabama and LSU and USC are the teams getting mentioned most often so far as likely contenders for this year’s BCS national championship, but I’m thinking if the Dawgs win the East again as expected and can put together a full four quarters against LSU or Bama in the Dome and win the conference, they might actually wind up with a pretty good shot at the crystal ball. Am I just having your typical spring dream, Bill? Does anyone else give Georgia props in the BCS?
Actually, Bruce Feldman of CBSsports.com ran down some of the dark horse contenders this week and noted that Vegas has the odds for Georgia at 14-1. Said Feldman: “There is a lot to like about the Dawgs in 2012: Aaron Murray is back for a third season as the starting QB; they are deeper at RB and almost everyone from a nasty defense returns. Another huge factor of why I’m thinking of boarding this bandwagon is the schedule: You realistically cannot get a much more manageable route as an SEC team that what Georgia has this fall: They avoid Bama, LSU and Arkansas, the league’s three most talented teams; they traded Boise State for Buffalo in the non-conference; they get Ga. Tech in Athens. And Florida and Tennessee are still sorting out rebuilding issues. The one snag is an October trip to South Carolina. Oh, and they have the SEC juice of six BCS titles in a row. I still think Bama and LSU have better shots to win it all, but at 14-1, the Dawgs would be a tempting pick.”
Steve Segrest writes: Several weeks ago you had a discussion on the low student attendance at games. When I walked around campus in visiting my daughter, I was amazed at the number of women, saying to myself, “It’s like UGA has become a school for women.” My daughter was just never really interested that much in sports. The high number of women at UGA probably answers your question on attendance.
UGA says that 60 percent of its fall 2011 total enrollment of 34,765 was women. Now, granted, some of them probably aren’t as interested in football as guys, but I’ve known quite a few female students at UGA that were ardent football fans — and some guys who weren’t. The demographics might be a slight factor, but from what I’ve heard from UGA students the main reason for the empty seats at games is students’ inability to resell their tickets since they went to loading them electronically on the ID cards. When they could resell hard tickets easily, the seats were full. Now that they can’t, you sometimes get several thousand empty seats. Seems like there’s a pretty simple solution there that the athletic association is avoiding because they don’t like students scalping their discounted tickets.

David Rosenberg writes: Love your column. I am a third-generation Bulldog. With the Lady Dawgs getting bounced from [the NCAA] Tournament and occupying the same conference as the great Pat Summitt, it begs the question: HAS ANDY LANDERS UNDERACHIEVED AT UGA? I love Coach Landers and think he has done a very fine job building this program, but it seems as though they cannot take the next big step. We want ALL our teams to do well, so I ask this question as part of wanting excellence in all our sports.Interested in your opinion.
Along the same lines, Rakkasan Dawg writes: I think it’s time Andy Landers retired from UGA and here is why. Not since Miller twins has UGA been remotely competitive. They’ve steadily fallen off the top tier of NCAA teams. Even in the SEC Kentucky has surpassed the Lady Dawgs. I don’t see a competitive team at the school anymore and I think this stems from the top. Coach Landers is no longer getting the competitive Georgia players and none nationally that are as impactful as that 02-03 class. UGA is in danger of becoming an also-ran team if there is not significant shakeup at the top. … What say you?
I think a good case can be made that the Lady Dogs basketball program has reached a plateau over the past several years and this year’s team was certainly a disappointment, having been expected to at least put Georgia in the Sweet 16 again. Still, Landers remains an enthusiastic coach and he has a veteran team returning next year, including four starters, plus four of the incoming freshmen are four-star recruits, so it’s not like Georgia has fallen off the map in that regard. And that should help with the lack of depth that was a problem this season. So I don’t see any immediate change on the horizon. You also have to keep in mind that Landers built the UGA women’s program from scratch and has had a lot of long-term success, which athletic director Greg McGarity is well aware of, having worked with Landers as the team’s sports information director years ago. You don’t push out a Hall of Fame coach casually. Still, if the Lady Dogs continue to just barely make the NCAA and not advance, I wouldn’t be that surprised to see Landers and McGarity have that discussion in a couple of years over whether it’s time to retire.

After 11 years on the job, I think it is safe to say that we pretty know what we’re going to get from Mark Richt. Some Bad, some Great, a whole lot of Good and a whole lot of Underachievement.
Richt is no Nick Saban, who despite his epic failure at the Pro level, CLEARLY knows what he is doing when it comes to building a college powerhouse. Richt is also no Les Miles, who knows how to come into an established program and keep it at peak level. What Richt IS: is a guy who can overachieve with “B-level” talent but when he has the Knowshon’s, and the Stafford’s, and the AJ Green’s; he just can’t put it all together. Theoretically, a team should improve when their talent improves, but at UGA that is not the case.
So taking into account that Richt overachieves with “B-level talent”( which is what he currently has), I think the Dawgs will have a decent year IF everyone can remain healthy. Overall, the 2012 schedule is very navigable. Getting Bama off the schedule is a huge break, and facing South Carolina in October will benefit the Dawgs as opposed to having to play them at the beginning of the year. Richt’s teams traditionally get better as the season goes on, and I think the Dawgs will go on a bit of a run in 2012 like they did in 2011. Florida is horrible, as is Tennessee. The Dawgs will beat both of those teams again, although those games probably won’t be the blowouts we as fans will want/expect them to be.
I like the Dawgs to win the SEC East, go 11-1( losing to a Mizzou team on the road early in the year that they are not familiar with), and get to the SEC title game. However, instead of losing to LSU, I think Arkansas( who I like a LOT as a National Title Darkhorse) will emerge from the West with an identical 11-1 record. I say the Razorbacks win something along the lines of 37-27 or 38-24. The Dawgs will then get hosed and end up at a second tier bowl( Outback or Chick-fil-A) with that game being a tossup depending on how much the players actually give a crap.
I say the Dawgs finish 11-3 or 12-2, leaving the Bulldog faithful with our traditional ” What if’s, shoulda woulda’s, and wait until next(recruiting)season!”
P.S. I’ll also make an additional prediction. Arkansas will go to the National Title game and lose, breaking the SEC’s streak of National Titles.

Gotta say that Landers’ time has come and went… It’s time to bring in some new blood to re-energize this program. Successful men’s and women’s basketball programs are both factors in the basketball cultural transformation that is going on in Athens.

I don’t get why everybody thinks Arkansas has more talent than UGA. Maybe they have a small advantage in playmakers on offense. How many of their defensive players could start for us though ? If we play and lose to the Hogs, it’s coaching, not player ability.

I think the ladies basketball coach “Amy” Landers needs to go..he ain’t got it. There is too many good coaches out there that are a lot better. His style of coaching is poor!

We lost BS due to lack of running game, Murray turnovers young defense, South Carolina because of Arron Murry and special teams, LSU dropped TD passes, special teams and Murry turnovers. MS lost was offensive line horrible play in 2nd half and turn overs by Murry………………………………….
see a pattern………………….i don’t give a dang what Murry does against patseys…………………get it done against a ranked teams for goodness sake!……………………………………..it seems to me like once he makes a mistake in the big games…he freaks out and tries to hard……he will never solidify as one of GA best QB’s as far as I’m concerned unless he beats a ranked team………………………..has he at this point beat a team that has fininhed in the top twenty?????????????????

Orson Charles is average at best. Please stop with the everything GA is better than all others. OC is projected by many to be a flop waiting to happen. No speed, No separation, No hands, No size, that is alot to overcome when trying to be a pro. Wish him all the luck for patience from whatever team takes a shot on him.

At 280 pounds, don’t be shocked if Lynch gets some time as well at FB, with Rome at tight end. I think Rome can be close to even with Lynch on the field when it comes to receiving, and he has very sure hands. Lynch is a decent pass catcher, but I don’t think he is quite as fast as Rome is. Both I think could see their fair share of time on the field either way this year. With Lynch playing a few times at the FB position, Rome could come over the middle for a pass, and represent a good target for Murray, and Lynch would keep a defensive guy or two off of his back and allow him to pass. At Lynch’s size, he would represent a tough couple of yards near the goal line if needed as well.
It will be up to the coaches at UGA to utilize these two effectively, and having both of them on the field at one time, could present a few headaches for opposing defenses.

The above comments concerning Nick Saban “clearly knowing how to build a powerhouse college team”, left out the most important aspects of how he goes about this. Saban is not any better coach in college than in NFL, he just makes sure that he does not have to compete on a level playing field with his competition in the college ranks. There was no way to achieve this in the NFL. The pros pay their players already, so that advantage is taken away. There is no such thing as oversigning in the NFL. That little pos with the worst case of “little man syndrome” will NEVER expose himself to playing by the rules in college until the NCAA makes him and currently the NCAA is worshiping at his crotch just like the Bama fans. I’ve got news for all you D.A. Bama fans, it’s all about Saban to Saban, and he could care less about the University of Alabama, this you will all see sooner than later.
Alabama will not even win their own division again in 2012, much less anything else. Three losses in 2012 for Bama.
It is not hard to tell the kind of dips pull for Bama, such as the IDIOT WIlLLIE WET YOUR PANTS. I am not so sure that this moron even pulls for Bama, may be a Techie, but either way he shows everyone just how STUPID he is every single day. Looking back over the past several years, I have not seen any “upsets” by the Dawgs. By other teams against us, yes (like last year’s bowl game). But we beat the teams we are supposed to beat (mostly) and we lose to the ones we are rated less against. Sometimes we lose to teams that we should have won against. But I can’t remember a case where we were the underDAWG and ended up winning.

Landers will need to sign one of the nation’s top prospects out of his own back yard, Alisha Gray of Washington County, next year to strengthen his portfolio at this stage of his career. Signing Gray will be a great for him, not to mention a big step in revamping the Lady Dawgs program.

Georgia didn’t have a consistent running game last season and it totally dried up due to injuries in the SECCG and bowl game. The O-line was undependable and inconsistent. Aaron Murray was asked to do more than he should have and that resulted in game changing turnovers on his behalf in all four losses to the respectable opponents on the schedule. The offensive gameplan and playcalling was abysmal at times in the losses and unforgettably Georgia shamefully took a knee before blowing a game winning kick in the bowl. The defense played stout most of the season and it didn’t always give up points easily. Murray’s turnovers, fumbles and pick sixes, gave opponent easy points in the losses. All problems of the offense are to be blamed squarely on Richt, not the fall guy Bobo. An accumulation of talent at RB, will not help Georgia if the coaching on offense remains the same. The offense is totally outdated and even the hated Lane Kiffin said the Georgia offense is easy to prepare for because it’s so predictabale. The line play must improve, the QB must improve, the coaching and playcalling must improve and Richt has got to figure out how not to keep wasting talent and modify the offense. Georgia fans need to stop blaming Bobo because they are running Richt’s offensive system.
Sadly, Richt is running out of time. Over eleven years going on twelve years and no national titles. Meanwhile Saban has won TWO national titles in half the time as Richt, in the SEC’s most competitive division. He’s a good guy, devote christian and all that, but in college football it’s not about that. It’s about the hardware: titles and trophies. Herschel brought titles, trophies and constant title contention to Georgia in the 80s, but that was over 30 years ago. How much longer must Georgia fans continue to wait for those to return ? The schedule is getting weaker and weaker each season and so are are UGa’s chances for a national title under Mark Richt.

What planet have you been on??? You should be embarassed to come on here with such drivel. CMR signed the TOP football recruits in 4 different states in 2012. He signed a Top 10 recruiting class almost EVERY YEAR he has been UGA HC. He signed the Top ranked RB in 2011 abd 2012 and has TWO Consensus All Americans on his defense. I could go on and on but this is about all you will be able to absorb this week.

Brainiac: There is a very big difference between a Georgia fan and a Richt fan. I’m a Georgia fan, not a Richt fan. You are a Richt fan, not a Georgia fan and people like you are happy and content with the mediocre status of UGA . I have been watching Richt since he was an OC at FSU and even the Seminole fans were glad to see him go in 2000. I predicted then his ACC/FSU approach to offensive football would not win a national title for Georgia in the SEC. FSU was the Atlanta Braves of college football finishing in the top five for 14 years winning one disputed title over a Notre Dame team that beat them head to head and winning only one undisputed title. FSU wasted a lot of talent while barely winning two titles out of a 15 year title run. Richt really hasn’t won anything outside of Donnan’s recruits. It’s okay for you to be dumb enough to be a Richt fan for life, but Richt’s days at Georgia are numbered as McGarrity and CMR’s reps are haggling over buyout options on his new 5 year “extension”. Really he has this year and next to get it done or UGA buys him out. So your guy has one final chance to save his neck and the backing into the SECCG with 10 wins to get blown out and bowl loss days won’t cut it any longer. So don’t hate me for speaking the truth, you should hate the mediocrity that plagues Georgia instead of loving it like you do. Brainiac you are a mediocre fan that needs to get down on your knees and pray for the mediocrity to stay at UGA. And if that doesn’t work why don’t you switch out to ACC-Tech, were mediocrity is acceptable. We won’t miss your kind at all ! Go Dogs !

Murray is good, but he is not great. Too prone to throw the ball into the other teams hands. If Bobo does not improve as OC this year, he has to go. His second half play calling is atrocious. DC’s have his play book down pat by halftime, adjust to him, and if they have the players like the teams did that beat UGA last year, they win the ballgame. Murray’s interceptions and Bobo’s play calling are a dangerous combination.

2 SEC Championships, the last one of which was 2005. 2005 season was 8 years ago now this up-coming 2012 season. After 2005, Mark Richt is the # 6 in The SEC in won/lost record this coming 2012 season; and # 21 nationally after 2005. That does not make me a techie to not settle for that; it does however, make you a RICHT-O-PHILE to settle for that. There is a huge difference in being a Mark Richt fan, and being an UGA Bulldogs’ Football Program fan. If all you want is mediocrity, choose 1 of the 119 other colleges, and be a fan there for Mark Richt. There are 65 Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Program fans to this 1 blog who have told you this. Ignorance is not bliss; it is a lack of education. If you are satisfied with # 6 in just SEC teams and # 21 nationally in won/lost record after 2005, then take a hike – the other 65 of us are not. And, we don’t need your kind around any longer.

How many of Dooley’s conference championships were shared because another team had the same conference record and the did not play each other? How many times did he have to play an SEC Championship Game…How many of the SEC teams won the Natinal Championship during his 25 years as coach? There is no comparison of the SEC then and Now all the teams are better we added two good programs several years ago and have added two more good programs this year… It will be more difficult to win an SEC chammpionship now than before but whoever wins the SEC now has a very good chance to win a National Championship if the BCS remains and if they go to a four game playoff with only one SEC team included…The odds decrease in having to play the extra two games.
It is a different game now playing under different rules for championships…
