Early projection for season sees Dawgs standing pat

sec-pinwheel-logojpg-f806e20b1171f261RPI pioneer and BCS expert Jerry Palm came out with his ridiculously early bowl projections this week for CBSsports.com.

Palm has LSU winning the SEC championship and meeting Southern Cal in the BCS Championship game. With the SEC champ headed to the national title game, he sees the Sugar Bowl taking Alabama to play West Virginia of the Big 12 rather than the SEC runner-up, which he once again predicts will be Georgia. He has the Dogs playing Big 10 runner-up Nebraska in the Capitol One Bowl in Orlando.

So obviously he sees Georgia losing to LSU again in the conference championship.

(Some of you might ask, if the SEC champ normally goes to the Sugar Bowl and instead goes to the BCS, why wouldn’t the No. 2 team in the conference take their place in the Sugar? Because that’s not the way the bowls work! The loser of the SEC championship game usually doesn’t get a BCS bid because they’re usually not the second highest-ranked conference team in the polls.)

Palm has 10 of the SEC’s 14 teams playing in bowls, with South Carolina in the Outback, Arkansas in the Cotton, Auburn in the Chick-fil-A, Florida in the Gator, Texas A&M in the Music City, Missouri in the Liberty and Mississippi State in the BBVA Compass.

Of course, these projections are good for nothing more than an excuse to talk college football during March Madness, but it does raise a question for fans: If Palm’s scenario plays out, Georgia would once again win the SEC East but also would lose again to LSU in the Georgia Dome and wind up in a non-BCS bowl, though one notch higher than this past season’s Outback Bowl.

So it essentially would be a replay of the 2011 season, only with a slightly better bowl.

Obviously, that would be a successful season for Mark Richt’s program. But would you find it satisfying? After suffering through a losing season, winning the SEC East looked awfully good to UGA fans. But would a second straight season of conference bridesmaid status look as good? Especially considering all the starters that Georgia returns and an infusion of highly regarded talent, especially in the backfield?

Feel free to share your thoughts and expectations for the 2012 season.

A STRONG EXPENDITURE

UGA has released the salaries for its newly reconfigured strength and conditioning staff, and the Athens Banner-Herald notes the program will be spending $108,039 more annually in that area, with salaries totaling $440,000 for the five-person staff. That includes $140,000 for former Penn State strength director John Thomas, who’ll be senior associate director of strength and conditioning, and $85,000 for speed specialist Sherman Armstrong, the associate strength and conditioning coach. Senior director of strength and conditioning Joe Tereshinski will make $150,000.

Considering the Dogs’ problems over the past couple of years with fading in the fourth quarter, the upgrading of the S&C staff looks like money well spent to me.

Legumpers ain’t gonna win jack. Mark Richt is a missionary disguised as a coach, I foresee the mutts going 7-5 this season and losing to Coach Paul Johnson’s squad this November in that Cesspool Up North. THWG!

Nothing more than a SEC championship will do. It is time for Mark Richt to put up or shut-up. If UGA is to be a major player in college football it must start winning championship. LSU and Alabama have already gotten to far ahead. With the players in this state and the support that the program is given it is time to win the big one. I am tired of UGA playing second fiddle.

Satisfying??? No!

Who would want to start chanting “we’re #2, we’re #2″ or “we’re #3 in the SEC, we’re #3 in the SEC!” The goal is to win the SEC every single year!!! That is all that is in the Dawg’s control year after year. Of course getting the opportunity to play and win the BCS is the ultimate goal!

If you start to accept mediocrity….you become mediocrity!

Regardless of where we end up in the post season and what our record looks like, the quality of play on the field will be and should be much improved over last year.

Unless the o-line gets better, this is wishful thinking. We’ll beat the bad teams, but lose to the good ones unless we learn to block! Better teams “whooped” us at the all-important line of scrimmage! (B-State, Mich.-Sate, LSU) Gotta run in the SEC, and even with our good backfield thay gotta have good blocking! I’m hoping for improvement, but I’m not yet convinced that this one weakness has been properly addressed.

I like what DCJohn is saying but I feel like with the returning starters and the new guys coming in, we should at a minimum go undefeated in the regular season and play a very close game if not win the SEC championship game

With all the Talent at UGa, Murray a Heisman candidate, Crowell being a great freshman, and most of the East being down, then how can anything but a SEC CG win and a BCS game not be considered a failure?

Our offense will be the undoing of the Bulldogs this season. Too predictable and vanilla. Good SEC DCs shut it down for halves at the time. Once that happens, Richt/Bobo have no answers or adjustments.

9-3. Losing to Missouri, SC and UF. Van Gorder will slow down Bobo, but probably won’t get his system in til year 2. Bowl game is a toss up now – having lost 2 in a row.

While a second place finish would look like we have hit a plateau, we need to recognize that while we are getting better as a team, we are not (yet) on the level of LSU or Alabama. That said, I think UGA does have a real shot at the SEC this year.

We will go undefeated and win the SEC Championship but ESPN will decide that the national championship should be between Alabama and LSU. Then ESPN will report on Tiger being 12 shots off the lead in a tourney before mentioning UGA’s linebacker getting caught J Walking.

It sounds like we are already saying wait until next year before the season even starts. It is time for us to step up and win a championship. If we can’t then either our recruits aren’t as good as advertised or our coaches aren’t. The only difference between Coach Dooley’s mediocrity and Coach Richt’s mediocrity is Coach Dooley won a National Championship and set the bar so high for all of us that we haven’t been satisfied since. Take the National Championship out of the equation and the program really hasn’t advanced in 50 years while all of our competition in the conference has. I am no Richt hater I am just stating what should be obvious. It is time for us to step up to the next level with the recruits and coaches we have or we need to make a change because Alabama and LSU are way ahead of us at this point.

I hope we win every game, but I’m no longer delusionally counting on it. Even with his most talented teams, Richt ALWAYS loses a game or two that he shouldn’t. This year will be no different.

Alabama will win the SEC and will do so without that much trouble. LSU will finish behind ARK at #3 in the West. UF will win the East by just a tad but they will get it done but will be no match for the Tide. Bama Vs USC is possible and if so the Tide will send Kiffin and Dad back West with nothing for their trophy case. If you UGA fans believe you’re getting close to the football operation at Alabama then you go right ahead but fall and Nick rolls out this team you will see how far behind you are. The talent and depth at Alabam today is better than ever and some of these guys did play HS at Georgia. Dillion Lee will be on the field in 2012 based on the staff chatter for he’s a smart dude that as Nick say “he gets it”. The OL will have 4 NFL drafted players with the other two still just soph but will be NFL talent (cyrus will be all world). The guy that mentions Murray as a Heisman candidate….you jest …don’t you…..never lead his team to beat anybody that has beaten somebody.

I think Murray will make strides in the interception department because of a solid running game. If that happens, we roll! LSU’s Zach Mettenberger will not lead them to a title in his first year starting. Mark it down!

don`t see the rush to crown LSU, they have major holes to fill, Bama exposed them very clearly and lest we forget Ga dominated 1st half despite no running game. D this year will be lockdown, alot more offense as runners develop and barring injury early on to Crowley. the kid gets confidence in himself & we`ll see a different back with alot of backup options. line will be fine, probably much improved and with potential to improve each week, which hasn`t been the case in years. Bama maybe, LSU, I doubt it!

I got UGA losing to:
1) South Carolina
Spurrier has had Richt’s number for the last 2 seasons, and Murray and Grantham both always choke in this big game.
2) Florida
Richt’s only beat Florida 3 times in his 11 seasons. Enough said.
3) Auburn, Tenn, Vanderbilt or Tech
Richt almost always loses 1 game he shouldn’t.
4) LSU
Mettenberger is clearly better than Aaron Murray, so with revenge on his mind, look for Mettenberger to destroy Murray and the UGA gang for the 2nd straight year, should be an epic blowout loss of 30+ points, also look for Murray to have his normal big game meltdown. And for Grantham to give up 30+, like he almost always does to ranked teams.
5) Bowl
Look for a loss here. Richt is 0-2 with Murray in Bowl games. Murray chokes in Bowl games, averaging 3 turnovers per Bowl game.

I’ll take last year’s record over a losing season anytime. But if we’re not stepping up to the next level we’re not progressing and I’m tired of being stuck in neutral! We need to dial back some of the passing, grow up quick on the O-line, install a few screen passes to help them, dump the sprint draw or whatever the hell they call it, and run the damn ball between the tackles like we used to do.

With this inexperienced O-Line, and the depth issues at DB, look for a letdown season, 9-5, might get lucky and finish 10-4.

UGA fans are thrilled with 10-4 and getting to a bowl game.

Richt/Murray/Grantham are 0-9 vs. teams that finished top 25, so don’t expect that to change.

Should be a fun season to watch.

Murray is on track to set the NCAA record for interceptions if he continues with the +6 trend of throwing +6 int’s than previous season.

8 int’s in 2010
14 in 2011
20 in 2012
26 in 2013

68 int’s, new NCAA record.

Something to watch for, a record I expect Murray to EASILY break.

Two SEC Championships since Vince / Herschel…and little else to show for Georgia football during those three decades since Vince / Herschel…no National Championships, no Heisman trophies, no undefeated seasons.

There have been 32 SEC Champions crowned since Vince / Herschel and we have exactly TWO of those while Florida, Auburn, LSU, Tennessee and Bama have hauled in the rest of them. I have high hopes for this season…but I have had high hopes for three decades. Will believe it when I see it.

Here’s what NO ONE is talking about: While the record of last season looks good on paper, we didnt beat anyone! THE four good teams we played, we all lost to. I could craft a nationally ranked defense against the cupcakes we beat.

We still are not a good, solid, consistent team others fear playing. Moreover, we’ll never be that program with Coach Richt. I love him, but he is unbelievably stubborn and will never change. So get ready for another “winning” season, but as far as reaching the status of Alabama and LSU, where they are competing every year for the national championship, it’ll never happen.

A few things to consider.

1- 0-9
That’s the record vs. teams that finished ranked since 2009. Either Grantham’s defense meltsdown or Aaron Murray does.

2- 0-2
So far, Richt has never beaten Florida 2 years in a row.

3- 7 out of 9
80%+ chance Richt loses more games than previous season, if you look at last 9 years. Would mean 80%+ chance UGA wins 9 games or fewer.

4- 0-2
Richt/Grantham/Murray’s record against South Carolina, and in Bowl games

I believe for the most part people like Richt, but just don’t like the fact that he has not beaten a top 20 team in a couple of seasons. I’m one that hope he can turn it around. IF, big IF, he can beat Mizzou and SC at the beginning of the year I will beat interested if that changes the attitudes of some of the UGA people that have been hard on him. Rest assured the fan base of the other teams will just blow it off and say that we should have beat them.
On paper SC should win the east this year, Mizzou could surprise a couple of teams. The fact that it’s their SEC opener is what has me nervous about that game.
Still, I believe that this team could have a special year this year if the Senior leaders will get their act together and not accept anything but excellence from the underclassmen. They have to set the example and lead. So far I’m not seeing that. Still early!
