Jarvis Jones could lose playing time if his helmet comes off as frequently this season as it did last year. (Associated Press)
Saturday morning musings: With an NCAA rule change mandating that players who lose their helmets in a game must sit out for at least one play, I’m wondering if Georgia’s equipment managers will be trying hard to come up with a new strategy for keeping the lids on Jarvis Jones and Isaiah Crowell, who ended quite a few plays topless last season. … Another rule change has teams kicking off from the 35-yard line but touchbacks being brought out to the 25, which is likely to make high, shorter, directional kicks the vogue with some coaches. Somewhere Jon Fabris must be smiling. … And in the case of an arrested UGA soccer player, I’m left wondering: Where exactly does one hide stolen hash browns in one’s pants?
With that image stuck in your brain, let’s dip into some of this week’s Junkyard Mail ….
First, a little social media feedback. This week, I asked on Facebook and Twitter what Georgia fans’ biggest offseason concerns are and what they’re most looking forward to seeing at G-Day.
The most common concern mentioned (besides Mike Bobo still being offensive coordinator) was, naturally, the offensive line. As Lee Bowen noted, “Even [the] best running backs need hawgs opening holes.”
Arrests and “off-field incidents” was another frequently expressed concern.
As for G-Day, Robert L. Kushner III is excited about seeing Keith Marshall and Christian LeMay. Darren Micheal Self wants to see some “toughness” out of Crowell. Wally Logan is hoping for “a Junkyard Dawg aggressive defense and some excitement from our running backs!”
And, returning to the concerns, Jesse Murrah is looking forward to seeing “what we have on the offensive line. The rest of our talent will do just fine as long as we can protect, block, and open holes.”
From the regular Junkyard Mail, DawginLex writes that, among other things, on G-Day “I want open QB competition between Murray and Lemay. I would love to hear of a plan to semi-platoon the 2 of them to take some of the heat off of Aaron.”
Frankly, I wouldn’t get your hopes up, Dawg. The David Greene-D.J. Shockley rotation appears to have been a one-time aberration for Mark Richt and Bobo. I’m also a proponent of getting your No. 2 quarterback some meaningful game time, even if you don’t go as far as platooning or scripting offensive series for the backup. But, barring an injury to Aaron Murray, I’ll be surprised if we see the backup QB any more this season than we did last season.

There will be a lot of interest in Isaiah Crowell this spring. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
Also on the subject of G-Day, Eddie Whitaker writes: I’m quite simply looking forward to being in Athens (Sanford Stadium to be more specific) on a glorious spring Saturday. G-Day games are usually less than exciting, but just the chance to be in the stadium, see the green field, the hedges, and the Red and Black, gives me something to look forward to during this “black hole” time of the sports year. You never know how many opportunities you’ll have in life to experience this. Thanks, Bill!
I agree with you complete, Eddie. We only get a handful of opportunities to watch football Between the Hedges each year, and G-Day’s the only time where you can choose your own seat. I’ve hunkered down through several cold, rainy April Saturdays just for the chance of seeing the Red and Black teams scrimmage. And also quite a few gorgeous spring days when just being in Athens was a pleasure, no matter whether the action on the field was compelling or not. Attendance is always pretty good for G-Day, but I’m betting with the Keith Marshall-Isaiah Crowell story line this spring, there might be a few more folks than usual showing up.
On offseason concerns, Jason Meucci writes: No surprises here … O-line and now with suspensions and dismissals, very concerned about our secondary. Also seems odd to say I’m comforted by having a true freshman as a kicker, but even that is an upgrade over what had become of Blair Walsh. If there’s a “darkhorse” concern, its Aaron Murray’s tendency to commit multiple turnovers against good teams. Oh, and Mike Bobo is still never to be trusted to come up with a creative or aggressive game plan or adjust when things aren’t working. 9-3 with losses to Mizzou, Florida and Auburn.
So you’re pegging Missouri as a loss, huh? Well, I know quite a few fans are pointing to that as a “trap” game for the Dogs. But I watched Missouri in its bowl game, and while they can move the ball, I can’t quite see their defense shutting down even Bobo. As for Florida and Auburn, those are always tough games, but I’m more worried about South Carolina.
DawgDayBlog writes: I am a longtime reader and huge fan of your undying love for all things UGA and Athens. If I had to pinpoint one concern for the (every) offseason, it would be spring break and the raucous outings and getaways our players will have. Unfortunately, we live in a world today where every move is made under a microscope, and an individual, especially of high profile, cannot get away with indulgences once considered mundane and insignificant. Many forget our players are kids, and are going to go out and have the times of their lives, much like we did at their age. Many on these blogs will moan and groan about Coach Richt not having control, though it is asinine to expect Coach to a) monitor every move by every player at every hour of the day, and b) expect Coach to lock them in a box and not allow them be kids (and we saw how locking kids in a box worked out for Mike Leach). Many other people on these blogs (mostly Tech fans who have nothing better to do than come on and spew their drivel about their football stadium property owners) will point fingers at these kids for having a party bone. Reality is, everybody, even the Techies, enjoyed life to its fullest when we were in college and would just about give up everything for one more day of carefree youth. Anyway, with spring break on the horizon, I, along with many other Dawg fans will hold our breath every morning when we open up the AJC or Twitter. Hope the boys have a GREAT time, but manage to keep a level head on their shoulders in the process. GO DAWGS!!!!!
Yeah, I’m always thankful when spring break is over and we don’t see the beat reporters having a feeding frenzy over an arrest report. And you make a good point: Yes, the head coach sets the tone for his team in terms of discipline, but he can’t control what 120 college kids do, especially when they’re not under his supervision. What he can do, though, is make it clear up front what will be tolerated and what won’t and also make it clear that transgressions will be punished. I think Richt has done a good job of especially the latter in recent years.

“I think all that really knows Georgia Football would agree, without all the “negative” blogging, stories, and gossip…………We would have probubly signed a full class”
________________________________________________________
If not for DISNEYdawgs.com posters making Mark Richt’s job so cushy, we might actually have had him make some changes this off-season, such as fire Mike Bobo, let new OC pick his own offensive coaching staff with one less offensive coach, so that he could have hired a Special Teams’ Coach, let JT2 go since the end of games 2011 was worse than in 2010 end of games in conditioning.
So Lame to say that negative blog posts are the fault for the recruiting blunders this 2012 season leaving us 8 scholarships short of full 85 with but 77, when what Mark Richt has done is RUN-OFF 26 but over-signed 109 to this 85 scholarship limit, an over-signing by 24 to-date.
What the REAL PROBLEM with this football program is EXCUSES by DISNEYdawgs.com posters, making the job so cushy for Mark Richt when he averages # 7 in The SEC football team over the last three (3) years now, and # 5 in The SEC in 2011 is supposed to be so great.
Grow a pair. You always brag all off-season and then during the season after a couple of games, are NOWHERE TO BE FOUND RED DOG 77.

Alabama fan’s, how long until the latest probation ends? I think it’s almost up, and when they take Alabama back off probation it will open up the door for them to start looking into Saban’s program again.
The NCAA has been looking the other way because Alabama was already on probation and it would have been devastating to call Saban for his dirty deeds while already on probation.
Saban and his cheating ways will be delt with sooner than later. Enjoy the fruits of Saban’s cheating while it last.

Love me sum Dawgs………………but…………….Murry to this point has not got it done against team that are ranked…..the only team that we have beaten that was ranked was Auburn last year I think…………seems like he has a direct hand in the losses to the big boys…..MS,SC. ect…I hate that Alabama is off the schedule…I think if we want to be the best we have to beat the best……….I would much rather watch a game against Bama than the Citadel!

Tell players to buckle up the helmet properly and don’t put so much hair in the helmet.
Less hair, more straps buckled. Less style, more substance (meaning football).

One thing that may play into UGA’s favor in developing other quarterbacks is the schedule. If the Dawgs blow out some of these teams, the younger QBs will see considerable playing time. True, it won’t be top quality competition, but they will be seeing other defenses and throwing against them.

Old Dawg what would benefit the QBs would to be playing with the 1st team players some. Playing behind the 3rd string O-line with the scrub WRs doesn’t tell the coach what the back-up QB can really do.

I don’t get the guy picking us to lose to Auburn and Missouri. Missouri didn’t impress me much in beating up on UNC and now they are playing in a big boy conference as opposed to the Oklahoma, Texas conference. They also don’t play defense in the Big 12 like we do. Also, I don’t see Auburn having a better season than last year after losing Dyer. We will make it 6 out of the last 7 against Auburn. UF will be a toss up. Like Bill I’m more worried about USC. By October Lattimore should be back to his previous form or close to it and Shaw will be more experienced. We also play them in Columbia..

What about in 2011 how many did saban get that he wanted, did he sign drew , mithcell, crowell, Rome and the countless other he offered,. Saban also offered K. I suspect that 85% of these bloggers here saying that they are Bama fans or LSU or Florida, UT or even GT fans are not really. No, they wear the caps of the schools that win, so when they go to their local mall, they can flash that cap and they think others are impressed with them. Sad but funny.
I wear the cap of UGA and wear it everywhere and folks see it and recognize it. I wear it win and lose. Most Bama fans on this site are too young maybe to recall Bama’s deep slumber after Bear died. In 92 with Gene Stallings they had a good year and that was it, pre Sabin, so for maybe 20 years they were nothing. WHen he bolts it will be that way again. Besides, U of Alabama and AU are in the state of Alabama …………..what a joke!!

Luke 12:48 has always been one of my favorite verses in the Holy Scriptures. I know we have a lot of Christians on this team, and coaches, so this verse, should become the verse for this year.
Luke 12:48
“A lot will be expected from everyone who has been given a lot. More will be demanded from everyone who has been entrusted with a lot.”
It’s hard to imagine being given more resources than God has given to Mark Richt. Richt has been given much, and God expects much out of Richt with the resources that have been granted to him.

Murray has the tools to be a great qb. M concern with him is his failure to go thru his progressions to find the open or most open receiver. I do not believe that is the result of an offensive line problem but his inability to overcome the AJ syndrome.

I’m an alum and love the the Dawgs; but as I’ve said from day-one or o-line will be our weakness. We will beat the bad teams, lose to the good teams, and have some pretty good skill-players and a good D. Our o-line will beat the patsies, but it will NOT be what it needs to be in the big games. We have got to recruit better in that department. We get big guys, but we cannot consistently run-block, and the good D-lines (see Michigan State, LSU) whooped us so bad at the line of scrimmage. We can have all the hopes in the world; until we get a top notch o-line we will not be where we need to be……not giving anybody hell, just telling the truth and it sounds like hell!

AJ syndrome ?
What’s that ?
What I know about Aaron Murray is that he was billed as dual-threat and looks more like 4.81 speed in the 40-yard dash and puny trying to run the ball, averaging 1 yards a carry on 6.44 carries a game all 27 games with 22 fumbles.
Passing – yes progressions are not learned yet. Also on pass completions, # 72 best in the nation, is NOT GOOD. You can go through just as you have on progressions, and recall all the passes behind the receivers and all those over-thrown over their heads.
Then, there are AM’s 23 interceptions in 27 games and his 11 losses where all 11 of those games, the other qb for the other team was far superior to Aaron Murray.
His leadership skills in the huddle, on the field, and off the field, have been non-existent.
I have looked at his height and it is right at 6 feet. We have watched additionally as his passes are batted down at the line.
And how SEC DL out-run him and sack him 56 times in 27 games.
He’s just not a top 25 qb.
Wish he was.
I was all on his side for 2010. I simply cannot deny now having watched him here, I mean here is here now this up-coming season for his 4th year here practicing with this team, that he isn’t what the vocal minority say about him. He’s just not. And, now with the latest 5th qb in the fold as a commitment last week, he never gets to a point where we ever bring ANY of them ever in to any game ever.
Many refer to it as frustrating, but honestly after now this his 4th season here practicing with this team since prior to the Michigan State bowl game in 2008, I am resigned to what we see is what we get.
Do I have to settle for him at QB ?
I’m not sure. I would like to see these 5 QB play and let us all decide. Do I trust Mike Bobo or Mark Richt on this ?
No.
No, I don’t.
Their record against top teams and their record against CUP-CAKES is such that they have NOT EARNED me trusting their Favorite Status for Aaron Murray.
He’s got lots of areas he must improve on. His footwork is atrocious. He has
HAPPY FEET.

We are no disgrace so please do not mention we are a disgrace we make more per year and dont win as much as you have for 3 years. Only 3 years please. Shows we have more support for when our team is down and a true fan base so save your crap for bama.

Harold,
Richt….not Rich has a winning record against Bama and Saban. I agree Saban and Bama have a more storied history with many more championships, BUT they have not been able to handle Coach Richt so don’t put him down…….he owns Bama and Saban!!! End of discussion.
