All hands on deck: Richt sounds ready to shake things up

It’s the time of year in college football when all teams are undefeated, most fans are optimistic, and coaches talk a lot of ideas designed to get those fans excited (though in many cases they never pan out). There might have been some of that in a few of Mark Richt’s comments to reporters Thursday, but I still found a lot to like in what he said.

Richt sounded a lot more flexible in terms of shaking things up and making the best use of Georgia’s talent base with position switches and two-way players than he has at times in the past.

Malcolm Mitchell playing offense and defense?

“Quite frankly, we’re going to experiment with that a bit,” Richt said.

Same with Richard Samuel possibly playing fullback. And there’s not a lot of difference in Todd Grantham’s defense between Ray Drew playing outside linebacker and defensive end, he said. Versatility is a hallmark of defensive players under Grantham, Richt noted. “A guy who at one time might be standing up as a linebacker, the next play he’s got his hand on the ground rushing the passer.”

Freshman linebacker Josh Harvey-Clemons also might get to play some offense as a receiver. (Associated Press)

Also, while incoming freshman linebacker Josh Harvey-Clemons isn’t likely to play safety, as had been rumored, Richt said he probably can stay in the game when the defense is in a nickel package, and “he’s also got some offensive skills and he may be just the right guy to throw the ball to in the red zone. So whether he can handle all that as a true freshman, I don’t know. But before his career is over we’ll definitely give him an opportunity to do some things offensively as well.”

Of course, chances are not all of those changes will stick in the long run past spring drills. But I like the way Richt is viewing his talent base.

And while I’m not thrilled that he isn’t budging on not naming a special teams coordinator, he did again emphasize that change is coming in that department.

As the head coach put it: “If that means a guy playing both ways or two positions on defense or if that means we have to put the entire starting lineup on offense and defense playing special teams, I don’t care what it is, we have to do whatever we have to do to get the best players on the field. … We may have to stretch guys a little bit here and there from a learning standpoint and from getting more reps. … [Most] guys are going to play some special teams at one time or another. So we’ve got to get all hands on deck. We’re going to make sure everybody understands how crucial they are and how special teams are just as important as playing first down on defense or offense.”

Sounds like Richt has gotten religion, so to speak, when it comes to improving the Dogs’ special teams play.

I also liked the fact that he reminded the defense that while they were highly ranked last season and return most of their starters, “The one thing they all want to do a better job of is finish. We could’ve finished better in our last two ballgames as a team, not just defensively. Our defense knows, at the moment of truth, when we’ve got to get a stop, we’ve got to get a stop. Same thing offensively; when we’ve got to score, we’ve got to score.”

Sounds like Richt wasn’t satisfied with just getting back to a 10-win season. Like I said, sometimes these offseason chats are simply the coach playing to the fans. But I get the feeling Richt is serious about making the moves necessary to get his program back to the next level.

What did you think of Richt’s comments?

Thomas, if you’re still lurking. I know Chisik is in the West, but that is a game that is a toss up WE MUST win. My point was those three coach’s are very average. Thanks for caring.

With some position changes, the Dawg D will be the best in the SEC! The Dawg’s O is loaded already with murray, ICrow, marshall and gurley. The Dawgs will upset lsu and win the SEC—mark it down!

Richt is up to his old self (not new as you insinuate) with him it’s always next year. There is no way he can stay ahead of the learning curve. He’s like our government after things go to absolute crap then we will make changes. The great coaches fix things before they go wrong, Richt is just the opposite. Promises, promises, promises that is alll you get with Richt!!!

MAYBE AARON MURRAY WILL HAVE ANOTHER YEAR WHERE HE THROWS 8 MORE INTERCEPTIONS THAN PREVIOUS SEASON????

LET’S SEE, 8 IN 2010 + 14 IN 2011 + 22 IN 2012 + 30 IN 2013 = 74 INTERCEPTIONS

74 INTERCEPTIONS = A NEW ncaa record

IF MURRAY AVERAGES 6+ INTERCEPTIONS HIS LAST 2 SEASONS, LIKE HE DID THIS SEASON, LOOKING AT:

8 INT’S IN 2010 + 14 INT’S IN 2011 + 20 INT’S IN 2012 + 26 INT’S IN 2013 =

68 INT’S, A NEW NCAA RECORD….

Barracuda, very insightful, you know your stuff. It is frustrating to project Murray’s interception trends out over 4 years at @70 career interceptions. He would leave the game the worst QB in the history of the NCAA in interceptions. You could also project out a trend towards sacks given up at @125 over his career, to set another NCAA record. We’ll look back at the Murray era as ‘the lost years’, no doubt. And we’ll all wonder what would have happened if Richt had gone with Mettenberger, or Mason or Lemay. Looking at Murray’s winless record against ranked teams, you think Richt would have caught on to what Murray’s doing by now, as you said, 0-9, and no changes projected at QB is rather shocking.

CMR be “shaking up” the Clarke County Jail? He needs to include all aspects of the UGA program.

Everything seems to come late to CMR. Why does it take 11 yrs in to the program to get a real sense of urgency that should have been there from the beginning. He’s an avg coach that’s a great recruiter, and that makes him better than avg on the whole, but I gave up wishing for a Nat. Champ. under CMR after the 08 season. Unlike all the programs around us, who have won Championships in the last 15 yrs with similar talent (Ala, Aub, Tn, Fla, LSU, and FSU), CMR just can’t get us over the hump.

The coach in charge of the QB’s isn’t doing a very good job of teaching/controlling the QB in risk/reward situations. Murray has some good throws and then he becomes (in mind) a great player and then sheet hits the fan. Everyday in practice you teach to throw to the receiver that the defense allows and not to the receiver you wish to throw!!!! I know you folks hate Nick Saban but you have seen what happens when Bama’s QB doesn’t take what the defense allows in the passing game regardless to whether the play/pass was a success. Your players don’t fear Mark Richt for he is just a “Buddy” and not the Boss and that my UGA fans is the reason your team plays like a Yo Yo! My1st High School football coach was Co Captain of Coach Bryant’s 1st Alabama team (1958) and in our 1st meeting (9th grade for me) as he addressed our team he made a statement that I never forget. He said “I am not your Buddy but I am your mentor”. The UGA players have no fear of Richt and it shows in many many ways. Just the sideline conduct of your team tells a huge story about your program and it’s not a good story. Continue your denial for it’s really good for the Alabama program.

How much worse can he get ? You cannot do worse than 0-9 vs teams finishing in the Top 25.

The last yoyo I had admittedly was some number of years ago, but it always bounced back up, right ? We’ve averaged the # 7 SEC team in the polls over the last 3 years now. I mean unless you do walk the dog, even a yoyo bounces back up.

We agree with everybody else, UGA had LSWho on the ropes in the first half. Second half…out coached/out played..so what’s new?

The athletic history of UGA is full of so many sordid, sleazy incidents – dating back to Vince Dooley and continuing through Mark Richt – that it’s impossible to overlook. The school has come to stand for drunkenness and lawlessness, coddling of illiterate low-class athletes who should never have been admitted to college, and rampant cheating by coaches.

UGA and Mark Richt are an affront and an embarrassment to all decent people in this state.
