Should UGA season ticket holders be satisfied with a diet of cupcakes?

georgia bulldog clubIf you’re a Georgia football season ticket holder and you haven’t made your annual contribution to the Hartman Fund, better get down to the post office, go online or get on the horn to the Georgia Bulldog Club offices in Athens, because today’s the deadline. You can find out all the details here.

Contributions sent via snail mail must be postmarked no later than Feb. 15.

Even if you’re not going for season tickets, a minimum $100 contribution to the Hartman Fund will get you a 2012 football ticket application and will make you eligible to request single-game tickets to five of the seven home games. With the Dawgs looking to open the season as possibly a Top 5 team, some folks might want to scramble aboard the bandwagon.

Then again, whether you can find five home games on Georgia’s 2012 schedule that you consider worth the cost of the ticket plus a contribution is another question.

Along those lines, I had a note from reader SavannahDawg, who was going ahead and making his contribution but was grumbling about the 2012 home schedule, which admittedly isn’t that exciting: Buffalo, Florida Atlantic, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Georgia Southern and Georgia Tech.

He complained that “the cupcake portion of that schedule is particularly lame. If sticking to an eight-game conference schedule in the expanded SEC means we have to give up playing Auburn every year just so we can keep the likes of the Florida Atlantic Owls coming to Athens for a paycheck, I’m going to be seriously rethinking my commitment to buying season tickets every year. Better to make a smaller donation and get single games, or even cherry-pick the best games on StubHub. Even paying scalper’s prices for those games, it’ll end up costing me less than season tickets when you factor in the Hartman Fund.”

SavanahDawg makes a valid point and I’m wondering if the SEC athletic directors’ aversion to adding a ninth conference game might not end up costing them financially down the road in terms of getting fans in the stands.

What do you think? Would a schedule that kept the cupcakes and lost Auburn as an annual opponent make you any less likely to buy tickets to games at Sanford Stadium?

It’s so painfully obvious to the fans that a 9 game schedule is the answer to all of this.

I’d say even the idiots running CFB will be able to see that but I think i’d be insulting idiots.

So all the bad teams are considered good because they played UGA close? You may want to reevaluate UGA instead of assuming every other team is awesome.

ahahahahahahahahaha or maybe just maybe they do play us tough every year no matter how good we are or bad they are. Same with SCjr. These 3 are 9 out of 10 times close games.

Sorry but pretty much every SEC team is better than tech and thats the point. But keep trying to spin and change it aorund. Its fun to watch you squirm.

I never said that GT was any good this year. We were actually pretty awful. Just not as awful as some of the SEC bottom dwellers.

If the season ticket holders want to have any chance of a championship of ANY kind they had better like it. This is the formula that Florida has used for years. Even with this schedule it doesn’t compare with the ANY other conference schedule. Most of the big teams like Ohio State, MI, Oregon, USC, Texas, OK Play a bunch of practice games, a couple rivalry games and thats it. Just because they play teams in their conference doesn’t mean they are any good. It’s difficult to get BCS teams to play you without a home and home agreement. And as to the money, playing some team like? Maryland? at home would fill the stands, but then the next year that there would be one less home game. You net more money on two home games with half full stadiums than you do having a full stadium one year and travel plus an empty stadium the next. The SEC is so much more difficult than the other conferences, even with the cupcakes it’s tougher than anything Ohio State will ever play.

Vanderbilt this year:

Against ranked teams: 0-5
Against winning teams: 0-6

That’s a quality football team.

Every SEC fan thinks that the 14 teams in the SEC are the 14 best teams in the country. Regardless of any evidence otherwise.

TBSF….Tech has beat every SEC team it has played since 2000 except LSU. Tech has beat UGA but only once, Vandy, Auburn, Miss St. Ole Miss ed backed out of the game a few years back.

TDF, please enlighten me to what the answer is then. How exactly would you keep traditional permanent rivalries and keep the 2 team West rotation going without going to a 9 game schedule?

I’m all ears. Wasn’t a problem for the (old) PAC 10 and the ACC seems to think it’s okay.

Old Dawg

I wouldn’t bash UGA’s home schedule too much, Bill. Like many other folks have stated, other SEC schools have equal servings of cupcakes on their schedules:

Bama: Western Kentucky, Florida Atlanta and Western Carolina
UT Vowels: Georgia State, Akron and Troy
Arkansas: Jacksonville, Louisiana Monroe, Tulsa
LSU: North Texas, Idaho and Towson University
Auburn: Louisiana Monroe, New Mexico and Alabama A&M
Florida: Bowling Green, Jacksonville State and Louisiana Ragin’ Cajun

It’s obvious SEC teams are racking up on wins with these folks so they can be more prepared for conference games. Conference schedules do fluctuate on their difficulty, and back in the 90s playing SEC East Teams like UT and Florida was always a chore.

These weak non-conference games also allow coaches to play underclassmen so they are more prepared when their time comes.

I don’t necessarily like what’s happening, but it’s obvious the trend is set.

After sharing season tickets and many great games with my two cousins (we refer to each other as Dawg Bro ) for almost 30 years we dropped our 7 seats (4 on row one in the club level, 3 in section 129) and railroad lot parking. With the advent of Stubhub we found that we can attend all of the games that we want to see and still get good seats and a parking pass and still save money. Since Adams ran Vince off the decrease in the value and quality of having season tickets has been unabated. The movers and shakers had better wake up!

It is silly for Ga to schedule teams like Buffalo, New Mexico St, Idaho St becuase nobody really cares.

GTBob conveniently ignores Vandy having Arkansas whipped this past season until the kicker couldn’t make a chip shot.

The same Arkansas that only lost 2 games-to LSU and Bama and beat K-State in the Cotton Bowl

Vandy was much improved in 2011 and had a ton of seniors. They would have given Tech a fit. not anything resembling the Vandy team Tech beat in the past.

Whatever you think the number of Bama’s Championships really are would still be 10 times what the Dawgs have won….You have a history of losing and losing big games…In the end, you have to play the WEST and that will wrap up your season except for the terrible bowl loss like last year…The real Bad part is that the SEC actually puts the game in the Georgia Dome and you still lose…Well, I guess Athens isn’t much better…
