Should UGA season ticket holders be satisfied with a diet of cupcakes?

georgia bulldog clubIf you’re a Georgia football season ticket holder and you haven’t made your annual contribution to the Hartman Fund, better get down to the post office, go online or get on the horn to the Georgia Bulldog Club offices in Athens, because today’s the deadline. You can find out all the details here.

Contributions sent via snail mail must be postmarked no later than Feb. 15.

Even if you’re not going for season tickets, a minimum $100 contribution to the Hartman Fund will get you a 2012 football ticket application and will make you eligible to request single-game tickets to five of the seven home games. With the Dawgs looking to open the season as possibly a Top 5 team, some folks might want to scramble aboard the bandwagon.

Then again, whether you can find five home games on Georgia’s 2012 schedule that you consider worth the cost of the ticket plus a contribution is another question.

Along those lines, I had a note from reader SavannahDawg, who was going ahead and making his contribution but was grumbling about the 2012 home schedule, which admittedly isn’t that exciting: Buffalo, Florida Atlantic, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Georgia Southern and Georgia Tech.

He complained that “the cupcake portion of that schedule is particularly lame. If sticking to an eight-game conference schedule in the expanded SEC means we have to give up playing Auburn every year just so we can keep the likes of the Florida Atlantic Owls coming to Athens for a paycheck, I’m going to be seriously rethinking my commitment to buying season tickets every year. Better to make a smaller donation and get single games, or even cherry-pick the best games on StubHub. Even paying scalper’s prices for those games, it’ll end up costing me less than season tickets when you factor in the Hartman Fund.”

SavanahDawg makes a valid point and I’m wondering if the SEC athletic directors’ aversion to adding a ninth conference game might not end up costing them financially down the road in terms of getting fans in the stands.

What do you think? Would a schedule that kept the cupcakes and lost Auburn as an annual opponent make you any less likely to buy tickets to games at Sanford Stadium?

I believe that we should follow the same type of scheduling that UF, LSU, Alabama & other national recognized programs do. What works for them should also work for the Dawgs.
I feel confident that McGarity, coming from a successful UF program, will do what is best for the program, the fans, & even the TV interests. A fine line perhaps but one that he has to walk to please as many interests as possible.

“Would a schedule that kept the cupcakes and lost Auburn as an annual opponent make you any less likely to buy tickets to games at Sanford Stadium?”

The bigger question is:

Will UGA fans continue to shell out money to watch Mark “I can win games – just not big games” Richt and his sidekick Booboo run the same three offensive plays game after game?

I wouldn’t be satisfied if I was a UGA season ticket holder, but then again, without the cupcakes how is Richt going to win his 9-10 games and keep proving that he is an amazing coach?

wow you have lots to learn little guy.

What big time recruits did we miss out on bc of lack of exposure???? please give me one.

Its called not putting yourself at a disadvantage. Thats how every other teams wants to play it then so will we. If you dont like it go be a fan of the ACC.

FYI Bama doesnt need to play penn state (Nor does any SEC team besides maybe the bottom feeders) to get extra exposure. Its a luxury of the SEC, big time players want to play in the SEC.

All teams have cupcake seasons from time to time. So whats the big deal? Some of those smaller schools get a big payday for those games, which funds their programs.

TDF,

First off, I’ll put my sports IQ and professional knowledge up against you any day son, so don’t try belittling me on a computer with some lame comment. When was the last time we went out of the Southeast to get a recruit, not named Knowshon? Alabama, LSU, Florida, and Auburn get kids from all over the country to play for them, and they win. They come in and poach most of our better athletes. I admit we do get some good high quality ranked guys, but not to the extent of these schools that play better teams throughout the year. The article clearly asks us if we want tougher teams on the schedule or weaker opponents. I stated tougher opponents brings better results, because you have to play the best to beat the best, and if we would have another decent team or two on the schedule then we may be ready in the second half against LSU. Georgia is a traditional football school with a lot of stars and winning, but we need a competitive advantage to win more National Championships. The SEC doesn’t give you EVERYTHING you need to succeed, look at Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and Ole Miss as of late. Just because we play in the best conference in America doesn’t mean we are automatically given things.

The world is not going to end if Georgia doesn’t play Auburn every year. Get over it. Nebraska joining the Big Ten and not playing Texas, Oklahoma, etc. didn’t end the world. We are all still here. Have fun paying big money to see Buffalo, Florida Atlantic and Georgia Southern, to go along with the bottom tier of the SEC and Tech.
(For the record, before you blast me for being anti-Georgia, I’m not a fan of anybody. Just a casual observer)

I welcome all challengers and always have.

Actually we went and got Greg Pyke OL from Maryland this year. You clearly focus on rivals for your recruiting ratings. Even though its been easily proven that all pay sites cater to high subscription areas and skew the rankings for those teams (Florida teams, USC, Bama, Ohio State)

Having more tough games on the schedule doesnt solve the depth issue that makes us not ready for second halfs. And FYI adding more tough games increases the likelyhood of more injuries and would actually hurt us even more for the second half.

Here you go contractor. Now please tell me that they get most of our players

For those dumb trolls from bama who think they own the state of GA in recruiting, and for those UGA fans that are dumb enough to believe it, here is a break down from the last 7 years of where the top 10 GA recruits went. (Top 10 determined by Bama’s precious rivals site)

Georgia-31
Florida State- 6
Alabama- 4
Auburn- 4
Tennessee- 4
Florida- 3
Southern California- 3
Miami (Fl)- 3
Georgia Tech- 3 (Ha!)
Notre Dame- 2
Michigan- 1
South Carolina- 1
Ohio State- 1
Stanford- 1
North Carolina- 1
Louisiana State- 1

McGarity is not the same guy I knew before he went to Florida. He now thinks he can only wear
silk underwear and he only communicates with the big dogs. He no longer communicates with the
average fan. Watch him with Pres Adams, what a brown nose. The schedule is pitiful and remains
so for the next ten years. The non-conference games will have thousands of empty seats and the
unused tickets cannot be given away. The high demand was because of the schedules Damon set
up and the travel games to Arizona, Oklahoma and Colorado. Those days are gone and so has the
demand for tickets, it is not only the pitiful coaching we saw in 2010 and again last year.

I am not worried about the schedule. I just want a chance for a national title. If the schedule was harder it would increase the chance we lose. As long as we win the SEC we will play 4 the national title!!! Just look at Lsu this year. It was a shame Lsu goes through their schedule and loses 2 someone they already beat earlier and still didn’t even share the title!!!Un believable!!! Just 1 loss and the chances of playing 4 the national title is over unless your team is Usc, Texas, ND, Oklahoma, or Florida. So 4 us 2 get the national exposure we will have to win a national title 1st with a cupcake schedule!!!

Saying otherwise is foolish or your too lazy to check out recruiting for yourself.

Richt just landed the number one player in 4 diff states this year.

FYI you dont have to go out of the SE to get players bc majority of the best are in the SE.

Kentucky won’t even make a bowl game and you know it. Vandy couldn’t even beat Tennessee. You really need to stop trying to build up every SEC team like they are the best team in the country. Just because UGA almost lost to Vandy doesn’t mean Vandy is any good at all.

For everyone who continues to bemoan the scheduling of this year and beyond (i.e., KoolAid), please note that the out-of-conference schedules through 2014 were in place long before McGarity was the AD. As for the conference schedules and the “lack” of in-conference competition — does everyone not realize that conference schedules are determined by the SEC? Individual schools may be able to determine WHEN they play certain teams, but most certainly don’t determine WHOM they play. When the Dawgs were playing some combination of LSU, ‘Bama and Arky I don’t recall so much scheduling criticism from the trolls around here. Everything comes full circle — it’s how scheduling CYCLES work.
