A few reasons for UGA fans to look on the bright side

UGA defensive coordinator Todd Grantham has been named one of the nation's Top 25 recruiters. (University of Georgia)

UGA defensive coordinator Todd Grantham has been named one of the nation's Top 25 recruiters. (University of Georgia)

The gray skies outside have reflected too much of how my winter has gone so far, so it’s time for a few mood brighteners, of the red and black variety.

Some might choose to be focusing on those potential signees that Georgia didn’t manage to flip last week, but the Dogs still will have some pretty impressive fresh blood coming to Athens, and defensive coordinator Todd Grantham reportedly had a big hand in making that happen. Rivals.com has noticed, and named Grantham one of the nation’s 25 best recruiters, which bodes well for replenishing the senior-laden defensive secondary after this season.

Speaking of which, David Ching of ESPN’s DawgNation notes that while Georgia could have depth problems in its defensive secondary in the wake of last week’s dismissals, the returning starting lineup is pretty awesome, with Bacarri Rambo, Shawn Williams, Branden Smith and Sanders Commings.

Ching quotes Williams as saying, “The whole defense, it’s going to be one of our goals to finish as the No. 1 defense in the country this year.” If they’re successful, the Dogs might well be able to kick it up a notch from a 10-win season.

At any rate, I like the way Rambo is thinking in putting off the NFL for another year: “God put it on my heart that I need to stay my senior year so I can get better and improve at the small things that I need to and just be a complete safety. I’m going to do my best this offseason to try to get better, work hard, be a leader and hopefully help my team get to Miami next year.”

Meanwhile, in the wake of signing day, ESPN’s Mark Schlabach has updated his 2012 Way-Too-Early Preseason Top 25 and UGA has moved up a spot to No. 5. Notes Schlabach: “Georgia has to run the ball more effectively and learn how to finish games, but there might not be a more inviting schedule in 2012 than the one the Bulldogs will face. Georgia is expected to bring back 10 starters from a much-improved defense, including All-American linebacker Jarvis Jones and safety Bacarri Rambo. Incoming freshmen Josh Harvey-Clemons, Jonathan Taylor and John Atkins might provide some immediate help. Quarterback Aaron Murray and receiver Malcolm Mitchell are coming back, and UGA signed two highly regarded tailbacks — Keith Marshall (already enrolled at UGA) and Todd Gurley — to push sophomore Isaiah Crowell. Georgia doesn’t play SEC West favorites Alabama, Arkansas and LSU during the regular season and plays four of its first five games at home.”

And let’s top it off with one of my all-time favorite Dawgs, Hines Ward, who recently told 11 Alive he would like one day to return to Athens as a coach. “I tease Coach Richt if he wants to hire me, hire me,” Ward said. “I would love that. That would be my ultimate dream.”

Wouldn’t you just love to see that?

Yeah, I’m definitely feeling better now. How about you?

Hines Ward (aka easily one of the Top Five Dawgs EVER) would be an awesome addition in Athens. He has had a huge hand in helping develop countless young receivers in Pittsburgh… And, he’s a truly good guy! GO DAWGS!

Since we have four seniors in the back field, why did we only recruit one DB this year?

Also, if UGA does not sign 25 players and has 7 slots left open, will those 7 slots carry over to next year or are they lost?

Nothing like the fresh optimism of the dawgs before the season starts and they falter yet again. They might finish #1 in defense? Uh. I don’t think so. Not while Alabama and LSU each return 5 or 6 starters on D plus boatloads of talent at both of those programs. The only thing the dawgs got for them is a pathetically weak schedule. They did have the Bammers scheduled for 2012 before conference realignment saved the dawgs from another humiliation from Satan. Nevertheless this is a team that couldn’t even beat a middling Big 10 team in a bowl game. They aint got nuthin.

It’s pretty depressing when you look at this team.

Defense:
Grantham’s D beat up on the losing teams, but coughed up a league worse 39 points a game against the best teams we played (Mich St, Boise, South Carolina, LSU).

Red zone defense was beyond awful and last in SEC.

Offense:
On offense, couldn’t find a running game, and Murray ended up leading the SEC in sacks and interceptions.

Special teams:
Last in SEC in punt return defense, kick return defense, and field goal percentage.

I, too, am excited about UGA’s defense next year. I know Friend has some work to do to get the young offensive linemen prepared and there’s a ton of work to do on special teams, and CMR has targeted those areas for a lot of work during spring practice.

Every team has areas of concern entering spring, so some folks needs to relax and let the coaching staff do its work.

We certainly had another good recruiting year. Got both quality and some quantity, as well. Now the problem is turning athletic talent into production on the field.
We had a better season that expected last year, due (in large part) to a favorable schedule. SEC East is down a little bit, but that’s just a cyclical thing…both divisions go up and down over the years.
But we only really looked good in two games last year, against SC (in a loss) and against Auburn in a win. Florida had their worst team in years, and we had to scramble to beat them by 4. Our punter had to make a game-saving tackle to save a win against Vanderbilt.
Whatever has been the problem with our team in recent years has NOT been due to lack of talent.

When you return 10 of 11 starters on a top 5 defense, coupled with returning all the play makers on offense plus they RBs we added you start to see a top ten team emerge, just like the pollsters are seeing. we will be much better than last year in all facets of the game. Which is scary to think about our defense being that much better.

As for the fair weather fans on here amen. they all just need to go hide in their shells until something good happens.

We are not a top 10 team at all. The only reason we are ranked so high in these “too early” polls is because they are taking in account the schedule we are playing. DB depth is a huge concern don’t want to even think about if commings or smith go down. Also, the O-line has to block before we can be a top 10 team. With that said if we stay healthy and play to our “potential” which is very rare i think we make another run at the sec east, and who knows we could get lucky in one more game.

I know they are losing a substantial amount of players, but Saban has those boys focused on playing hard nosed football. I’m not going to sit here and bash his recruiting tactics, thats for another forum…but as for a head football coach..he’s proven himself in the college ranks. Next year, they will be vulnerable…but I also know how the Dawgs have under performed in big games the past few years.

One thing Hines would bring to the table…is ENTHUSIASM!! I dont see that from Richt or Bobo anywhere on the field. But Grantham sure brings the fire…and it exactly what we need a whole lot more.

DB depth is not an issue. They will sign another DB out of JUCO for 2012 season, MM can and will most likely get snaps at CB this year, and JHC will start out at safety before moving to LB like Tree did. We are fine there.

OL will be better and we have more depth with 14-17 guys competing for the starting jobs.

With our defense and the weapons on offense we return, we will earn a top ten ranking for week 1.

Damien Swann was supposed to be the nickle but will have to move to Commings spot – nickle will be a question mark as long ass Commings is out. UGA lost two big time CBs with Marshall and Sanders. Not many wide receivers are considered dirty players. Hines Ward is an exception.
One of the best blockers at his position in league history, Ward has become notorious for his cheap shots. In 2008, he broke the jaw of Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Keith Rivers with a block. The NFL changed its rules the next year, banning such hits.

Maybe our young offensive line will surprise some people this season the way LSU’s young defensive line surprised alot of people this pass season. Who would of thought Anthony Johnson-DT(freshman) would have the kind of impact that he had for their defense.

John Theus-OT(freshman) could have the same kind of impact on the offensive line this season…..you never know.

The dawgs need Hines Ward because he is a great motivator and he cares about the dawgs.

Our O-line will be dominant next season. They’ll be better in 2012 than in 2011. We have Theus, Beard, etc. I expect Beard to be a beast on the line next season. Justin Anderson (our weakest link) is gone. I expect our line to look like this:

LT: John Theus
LG: Mark Beard
C: David Andrews
RG: Chris Burnette
RT: Watts Danztler

Since Bama can’t seem to win their SEC Wet division, If UGA wins the SEC East again we’ll most likely be playing LSU again. What do you think Mettinberger thinks of this match-up Bill? Saw Mett play in the spring game a few seasons ago at UGA and he was the top QB on both sides that day. Hopefully he spanks Bamers azz and Awbarn’s. Nothing like seeing a Georgia boy do good, unless we get a chance against him. Mett is capeable of winning big at LSU.
If he hadn’t gotten kicked off the team in Athens he probably would have transfered by now. CMR wasn’t going to play him over Murray anyway. But he did outplay Murray in their spring debut.
What’s your thoughts on this Bill?

Hope y’all are correct on the o-line…..no matter the names they have to friggin’ BLOCK for the running game. I know I.C. was pattin’ that head too much last year, and the other mini-backs couldn’t run the power game. However, our line was exposed against good teams as badly as Madoff was, so hopefully they have been taught how to play SEC college football. I hope for the best and am a fan through and through, but they gotta show they can play with the big boys!
